Abstract
Background Menopause is associated with an increased risk of kidney stone disease (KSD). However, for postmenopausal women, how to avoid KSD has rarely been studied. The aim of this study was to explore whether drinking tea is associated with a reduction in the prevalence of KSD in postmenopausal women. Methods We collected 11,484 postmenopausal women from the Taiwan Biobank, and used questionnaires to obtain information on tea drinking, KSD, and comorbidities. The participants were divided into two groups according to habitual tea consumption: tea-drinking and non-tea-drinking groups. The association between habitual tea consumption and KSD was examined by logistic regression analysis. Results There were 2,035 postmenopausal women in the tea-drinking group and 9,449 postmenopausal women in the non-tea-drinking group. The mean age of all participants was 61 years. Compared to the non-tea-drinking group, the tea-drinking group had a significantly lower prevalence of KSD (7% vs. 5%). The odds ratio (OR) of KSD was lower in those who habitually drank tea than in those who did not (OR = 0.78; 95% confidence interval [CI] [0.63 to 0.96]) after adjusting for confounders. Moreover, postmenopausal women with a daily intake of two cups of tea or more had a 30% reduced risk of KSD compared to those who did not habitually drink tea (OR = 0.71, 95% CI [0.56 to 0.90]). Conclusions Our results suggest that habitual tea drinking may be associated with a reduction in the prevalence of KSD in postmenopausal women. Further studies are warranted to investigate the protective effect of tea on the development of KSD.

Abstract
Background and Objectives The incidence of kidney stones is increasing globally, with a preponderance in adults compared with that in adolescents and children. Dietary habits have been identified as significant contributing factors to kidney stone formation. This literature review aimed to explore the existing evidence on the impact of diet on renal stone formation. Methods and Study Design We conducted a comprehensive literature review and included 81 studies published between 1999 and 2023, limiting the search to articles published in English. The extracted data were analyzed to identify common themes, trends, and patterns related to the impact of diet on renal stone formation. We investigated the influence of dietary habits on the risk of nephrolithiasis. Results Although the role of fluid intake in relation to stone formation is clear, existing evidence on how different types of beverages (coffee, tea, fruit juices, and soft drinks) affect kidney stone formation is conflicting. Other factors such as protein, sodium chloride, calcium, oxalate, fat, and carbohydrate intake have also been discussed as contributors to nephrolithiasis. Thus, diet should be appropriately modified to reduce the risk of stone formation in susceptible individuals. A history of nephrolithiasis has been found to increase the risk of both chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease. The review acknowledges the limitations inherent in conducting a literature review, including the potential for publication bias and the reliance on available published studies. Conclusions These findings highlight the importance of understanding and preventing nephrolithiasis.

Abstract
Urolithiasis, a common and recurrent condition, imposes a significant global health burden. This study investigates the causal relationship between various types of fluid intake and urolithiasis using univariable and multivariable Mendelian randomization (MR) approaches. Genetic data for urolithiasis were obtained from the FinnGen Consortium (n = 400,681), while genetic measures for nine fluid types were sourced from meta-analyses of genome-wide association studies (GWAS). The analysis revealed that genetically predicted coffee intake (OR: 0.571, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.341-0.958, p = 0.034) and ground coffee intake (OR: 0.219, 95% CI: 0.005-0.923, p = 0.038) were protective factors for upper urinary calculi. Additionally, a standard deviation (SD) increase in tea intake was associated with a 53% reduction in risk (OR: 0.473, 95% CI: 0.320-0.700, p < 0.001). Conversely, milk intake (OR: 1.072, 95% CI: 1.018-1.130) and alcohol intakefrequency (OR: 1.304, 95% CI: 1.083-1.570, p = 0.005) increased the risk of upper urinary calculi. These findings highlight the association of tea with reduced risk of urolithiasis, instead for milk and alcohol intake, in formulating prevention strategies for urolithiasis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Nephrolithiasis is prevalent and burdensome worldwide. At present, evidence on the risk factors for nephrolithiasis is unconsolidated and the associations remain uncertain. The authors systematically evaluate the robustness of the meta-analytic evidence and aid more reliable interpretations of the epidemiological relationships. METHODS The authors conducted a comprehensive review of the meta-analyses, screened the included studies with the aid of the AMSTAR 2 evaluation tool, and then used R (4.1.1) software to perform data analysis to evaluate the association between candidate risk factors and kidney stones, and evaluated the credibility of the evidence of the association between risk factors and kidney stones according to the GRADE classification, and finally obtained the strength and effectiveness of the association. RESULTS The authors finally included 17 meta-analyses regarding 46 risk factors, 34 of which (73.9%) showed statistically significant association with nephrolithiasis. Among the significant associations, the authors found that waist circumference, BMI, dietary intake and fructose intake were positively correlated with the occurrence and development of nephrolithiasis. Caffeine, dietary fiber and DASH-diet showed a tendency to reduce kidney stones. Interestingly, calcium supplementation, dietary calcium, and vitamin D, which are widely believed to be responsible for stone formation, made no difference or even reduced the risk of nephrolithiasis. CONCLUSIONS The authors' study demonstrates the suggestive causal (central obesity, type 2 diabetes, gout, dietary sodium, fructose intake and higher temperatures) risk factors of nephrolithiasis. The authors also demonstrate the suggestive causal (coffee/alcohol/beer intake, dietary calcium and DASH-diet) protective factors of nephrolithiasis. To provide epidemiological basis for the treatment and prevention of nephrolithiasis.

Abstract
Kidney stone disease has a multifactorial etiology, and evolving dietary habits necessitate continuous updates on the impact of dietary components on lithogenesis. The relationship between diseases influenced by lifestyle, such as obesity and diabetes, and kidney stone risk underscores the need for comprehensive lifestyle analysis. Effective management of kidney stones requires a multidisciplinary approach, involving collaboration among nutritionists, urologists, nephrologists, and other healthcare professionals to address the complex interactions between diet, lifestyle, and individual susceptibility. Personalized dietary therapy, based on each patient's unique biochemical and dietary profile, is essential and necessitates comprehensive nutritional assessments. Accurate dietary intake evaluation is best achieved through seven-day, real-time dietary records. Key factors influencing urinary risk include fluid intake, dietary protein, carbohydrates, oxalate, calcium, and sodium chloride. Personalized interventions, such as customized dietary changes based on gut microbiota, may improve stone prevention and recurrence. Current research suggests individualized guidance on alcohol intake and indicates that tea and coffee consumption might protect against urolithiasis. There is potential evidence linking tobacco use and secondhand smoke to increased kidney stone risk. The effects of vitamins and physical activity on kidney stone risk remain unresolved due to mixed evidence. For diseases influenced by lifestyle, conclusive evidence on targeted interventions for nephrolithiasis prevention is lacking, though preliminary research suggests potential benefits. Management strategies emphasize lifestyle modifications to reduce recurrence risks, support rapid recovery, and identify predisposing conditions, highlighting the importance of these changes despite inconclusive data.

Abstract
PURPOSE The association between tea consumption and kidney stones is inconsistent in observational studies. Thus, we performed a dose-response meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies and a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to identify this association. METHODS The prospective cohort studies reporting the relationship between tea consumption and kidney stones were searched from PubMed, the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Web of Science from inception to December 1, 2023. For MR analysis, the summary-level data for tea consumption and kidney stones were extracted from the UK Biobank available data and the 8th release of the FinnGen consortium, respectively. The inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method was the primary analytical method. RESULTS In our dose-response meta-analysis, four prospective cohort studies involving 1,263,008 participants were included, and tea consumption was found to have significant associations with kidney stones (RR: 0.80, 95% CI: 0.73-0.87). We also observed a substantially linear negative relationship between tea consumption and the risk of kidney stones. In MR analysis, the IVW method indicated that tea consumption was inversely associated with kidney stones (OR: 0.71, 95% CI: 0.53-0.94). CONCLUSION Our study confirmed a causal relationship between tea consumption and kidney stones, and higher tea consumption may reduce the risk of kidney stones.

Abstract
Purpose: To investigate the relationship between the Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) and kidney stone risk using NHANES 2007-2018 data, and to explore potential mechanisms and population-specific effects. Materials and methods: Data from the NHANES 2007-2018 were analyzed. OBS was calculated based on 16 dietary components and 4 lifestyle components. Multivariate logistic regression was employed to investigate the relationship between OBS and kidney stone. Further stratified analyses were conducted to examine the associations across different subgroups. Results: A total of 19,799 participants were included in the study. There was a consistent inverse association between OBS and the risk of kidney stones (OR = 0.97; 95% CI: 0.96-0.99). After dividing the participants into quartiles based on OBS, compared to the lowest quartile of OBS, the risk of kidney stones in the highest quartile of OBS was reduced by 33% (95% CI 0.50-0.89; p = 0.002). This association was consistent across both dietary and lifestyle OBS scores. The protective effect of OBS was notably pronounced among Non-Hispanic white and Other race groups, and among individuals with a higher level of education. However, the association was not significant among individuals with diabetes. Conclusion: A higher OBS, indicating a balance skewed towards antioxidants, is associated with a reduced risk of kidney stones, especially among specific population subgroups. These findings underscore the potential role of oxidative balance in kidney stone pathogenesis and highlight the importance of considering individual and population-specific factors in future research and preventive strategies.

Abstract
Caffeine is a well-known purine alkaloid commonly found in coffee. Several lines of previous and recent evidence have shown that habitual coffee drinking is associated with lower risks for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and nephrolithiasis. However, cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying its renoprotective effects remain largely unknown due to a lack of knowledge on cellular adaptive response to caffeine. This study investigated cellular adaptive response of renal tubular cells to caffeine at the protein level. Cellular proteome of MDCK cells treated with caffeine at a physiologic concentration (100 μM) for 24 h was analyzed comparing with that of untreated cells by label-free quantitative proteomics. From a total of 936 proteins identified, comparative analysis revealed significant changes in levels of 148 proteins induced by caffeine. These significantly altered proteins were involved mainly in proteasome, ribosome, tricarboxylic acid (TCA) (or Krebs) cycle, DNA replication, spliceosome, biosynthesis of amino acid, carbon metabolism, nucleocytoplasmic transport, cell cycle, cytoplasmic translation, translation initiation, and mRNA metabolic process. Functional validation by various assays confirmed that caffeine decreased cell population at G2/M, increased cell population at G0/G1, increased level of ubiquitinated proteins, increased intracellular ATP and enhanced mitochondrial membrane potential in MDCK cells. These data may help unravelling molecular mechanisms underlying the biological effects of caffeine on renal tubular cells at cellular and protein levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Urolithiasis is a common urological disease with increasing incidence worldwide, and preventing its risk poses significant challenges. Here, we used Mendelian randomization (MR) framework to genetically assess the causal nature of multifaceted risk factors on urolithiasis. METHODS 17 potential risk factors associated with urolithiasis were collected from recently published observational studies, which can be categorized basically into lifestyle factors and circulating biomarkers. The instrumental variables of risk factors were selected from large-scale genome-wide association studies (N ≤ 607,291). Summary-level data on urolithiasis were obtained from UK Biobank (UKB) (3,625 cases and 459,308 noncases) and the FinnGen consortium (5,347 cases and 213,445 noncases). The univariable and multivariable MR analyses were applied to evaluate the causal, independent effect of these potential risk factors upon urolithiasis. Effects from the two consortia were combined by the meta-analysis methods. RESULTS Higher genetically predicted sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG, OR, 0.708; 95% CI, 0.555 to 0.903), estradiol (OR, 0.179; 95% CI, 0.042 to 0.751), tea intake (OR, 0.550; 95% CI, 0.345 to 0.878), alcoholic drinks per week (OR, 0.992; 95% CI, 0.987 to 0.997), and some physical activity (e.g., swimming, cycling, keeping fit, and bowling, OR, 0.054; 95% CI, 0.008 to 0.363) were significantly associated with a lower risk of urolithiasis. In the Multivariate Mendelian Randomization (MVMR) analyses, the significant causal associations between estradiol, SHBG, tea intake, and alcoholic drinks per week with urolithiasis were robust even after adjusting for potential confounding variables. However, the previously observed causal association between other exercises and urolithiasis was no longer significant after adjusting for these factors. CONCLUSIONS The univariable and multivariable MR findings highlight the independent and significant roles of estradiol, SHBG, tea intake, and alcoholic drinks per week in the development of urolithiasis, which might provide a deeper insight into urolithiasis risk factors and supply potential preventative strategies.

Abstract
Consumption of caffeine in the diet, both daily and occasional, has a significant biological effect on the nervous system. Caffeine, through various and not yet fully investigated mechanisms, affects headaches. This is especially noticeable in migraine. In other headaches such as hypnic headache, post-dural puncture headache and spontaneous intracranial hypotension, caffeine is an important therapeutic agent. In turn, abrupt discontinuation of chronically used caffeine can cause caffeine-withdrawal headache. Caffeine can both relieve and trigger headaches.

Abstract
Background: Gout, an increasingly prevalent form of inflammatory arthritis, is caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in joints, resulting in severe pain, swelling and stiffness that adversely affect physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. The management of gout requires a combination of medication and lifestyle modifications. Recent studies suggest that tea intake may reduce the risk of developing gout; however, further research is needed to establish a causal relationship. Methods: In this study, we employed a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach, utilizing genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics, to investigate the causal association between increased tea intake and gout. We meticulously selected instrumental variables (IVs) based on rigorous criteria and employed five different MR methods. Heterogeneity was assessed using Cochran's Q statistic, and pleiotropy was evaluated using the MR Egger intercept and MR-PRESSO tests. Weak IVs were identified using F values. The Phenoscanner database was consulted to exclude single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with confounding factors or outcomes. Results: The study included one dataset related to tea intake (ukb-b-6066) and three datasets related to gout (ukb-b-12765, finn-b-M13_GOUT, and finn-b-GOUT_STRICT). Our forward MR analysis suggest a causal relationship between increased tea intake and reduced risk of gout in all three gout-related datasets [OR (95% CI): 0.9966 (0.9938-0.9993), p = 0.0167; 0.4842 (0.2683-0.8737), p-value = 0.0160; and 0.4554 (0.2155-0.9623), p = 0.0393, respectively]. The reveres MR showed increased risk of gout (ukb-b-12765) was significantly associated with low tea intake according to the IVW analysis [OR (95% CI): 0.0062 (0.0002-0.154), p = 0.0020]. However, this association was not observed in the Finn-b-M13_GOUT and Finn-b-GOUT_STRICT [OR (95% CI): 0.9992 (0.9909-1.0075), p = 0.8453 and OR (95% CI): 0.9996 (0.9932-1.0059), p = 0.8896, respectively]. No significant heterogeneity or potential pleiotropy was detected, and the possibility of weak IVs was also excluded. Conclusion: Our MR analysis suggest a causal relationship between genetically predicted tea intake and a decreased risk of gout. These findings underscore the potential advantages of increasing tea intake for preventing gout. However, further research is needed to validate these results and elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Background Sleep bruxism (SB) is a common behavior that can result in various clinical consequences on human health. Risk factors for SB include among others emotional stress, anxiety, tobacco smoking, and excessive alcohol consumption. Coffee and black tea are among the most commonly consumed beverages worldwide. This study explores the influence of coffee and black tea consumption on bruxism intensity, as observed in polysomnographic examination. Methods Polysomnographic examination with simultaneous camera recording was conducted in 106 adult subjects. The results were evaluated according to guidelines set out by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). The study group was divided according to habitual stimulant usage, as declared by the participants in a self-reported questionnaire. Four groups were identified: coffee drinkers versus non-drinkers and black tea drinkers versus non-drinkers. Results The bruxism episode index (BEI) was increased in coffee-drinkers as opposed to non-drinkers (4.59 ± 3.44 vs. 2.87 ± 1.50, p = 0.011). Sleep fragmentation, measured according to the arousal index, was comparable in coffee drinkers and non-drinkers. Electrolyte and lipid levels were similar in coffee drinkers and non-drinkers. Habitual black tea intake did not affect sleep architecture or bruxism intensity. Conclusions The study showed that habitual coffee consumption is a risk factor for the increased intensity of sleep bruxism. Neither coffee nor tea consumption is related to sleep fragmentation in habitual drinkers. Coffee and tea intake does not affect electrolyte and lipid concentrations. Caution should therefore be recommended in drinking coffee in people with sleep bruxism.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Observational studies indicate that tea intake is associated with a decreased risk of kidney stones. Here we performed a mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to evaluate whether this association is causal. METHODS Forty-four independent genetic variants strongly associated with tea intake were identified from a large genome-wide association study, including 448 060 individuals of the UK Biobank. We additionally obtained genome-wide association study summary statistics for kidney stones from the FinnGen consortium (5985 cases and 253 943 controls) and UK Biobank (6536 cases and 388 508 controls). Random-effect inverse variance weighted regression was used to evaluate causal estimates. The random-effect inverse variance weighted estimates based on the FinnGen consortium and UK Biobank were meta-analyzed using fixed-effects meta-analysis. Other MR methods, including MR-Egger, weighted median, weighted mode, and MR-Pleiotropy RESidual Sum and Outlier, were also performed to test the robustness of our results. RESULTS In a combined sample of 12 521 cases and 642 451 controls, the inverse variance weighted analysis indicated that genetically predicted tea intake was causally associated with a decreased risk of kidney stones (odds ratio = 0.47; 95% CI, 0.34-0.66; P < 0.001). This association was consistent in other MR methods. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that tea intake may be causally associated with a decreased risk of kidney stones.

Abstract
Background: Observational studies have suggested a possible association between benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and bladder cancer (BLCA). However, these studies are prone to errors and limitations or confounding factors, making them unsuitable for assessing the causal relationship between BPH and BLCA. Objective: Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) was performed to determine a possible association between genetically predicted BPH and the risk of BLCA. Methods: A two-sample MR analysis was performed utilizing the Integrative Epidemiology Unit genome-wide association (GWAS) database of the Medical Research Council, United Kingdom A series of control steps, including five primary methods, were performed to identify the most suitable instrumental variables (IVs) for MR analysis. Sensitivity analysis was conducted to avoid statistical errors, including heterogeneity and pleiotropic bias. Results: Genetic variants associated with BPH (P < 5 × 10-8) and BLCA (P < 5 × 10-6) were identified as instrumental variables and assessed using GWAS summary data (BPH, 4,670 cases vs. 458,340 controls; BLCA, 1,279 cases vs. 372,016 controls). BPH exhibited a positive effect on the occurrence of BLCA (inverse variance weighted (IVW), odds ratio (OR) = 1.095, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.030-1.165, p = 0.003), but there was no causal effect for BLCA on BPH (IVW, OR = 1.092, 95% CI = 0.814-1.465, p = 0.554). Conclusion: Genetically predicted BPH was associated with a higher risk of BLCA in all histological subtypes. In contrast, the evidence was not significant to back the causality of genetically induced BLCA on BPH. These findings indicate that BPH plays a key role in developing BLCA in the European population. Further studies are needed to uncover the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Background Although many studies have proven the beneficial effects of caffeine on human health, the association between caffeine intake and the risk of kidney stones is limited in large epidemiologic studies. Objectives We aimed to investigate the association between caffeine intake and the risk of kidney stones. Methods A total of 30,716 participants (with weight numbers of 204, 189, and 886) with a history of kidney stone were included in this analysis. All data were survey-weighted, and corresponding logistic regression models were performed to examine the associations between caffeine intake and the risk of kidney stones. Results In a fully adjusted model, a per-quartile increase in caffeine intake was associated with a 5.32% decreased risk of kidney stones. In the subgroup analysis, the multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of the risk of kidney stones for per-quartile increments in caffeine intake were 0.9650 (0.9643, 0.9656) for men, 0.9320 (0.9313, 0.9327) for women, 0.9384 (0.9378, 0.9389) for white race individuals, 1.0281 (1.0270, 1.0292) for nonwhite race individuals, 0.9460 (0.9455, 0.9465) for overweight/obese individuals, and 0.9314 (0.9303, 0.9324) for non-overweight individuals, 0.9100 (0.9094, 0.9105) for caffeine from coffee, and 1.0021 (1.0013, 1.0029) for caffeine from non-coffee sources. Conclusion Caffeine intake was negatively associated with the risk of kidney stones. In subgroup analyses, the negative association of caffeine with kidney stone risk was only found in white individuals. In addition, the decreased risk was found higher in women and non-overweight individuals. Especially for women, white individuals and non-overweight individuals. The protective effect of caffeine intake from coffee on stone formation was more significant than that of caffeine from non-coffee sources.

Abstract
Introduction and aim Nephrolithiasis is one of the most common urological disorders worldwide. Tea is one of the most popular drinks worldwide. This study aimed to explore the association between tea intake and hospitalized nephrolithiasis in Chinese adults. Methods The patients and healthy participants were from the Shenyang sub-cohort of Tianjin Chronic Low-Grade Systemic Inflammation and Health Cohort Study. After selecting and matching by age (±1 year) and sex using the 1:2 ratio, 834 participants were included in this study. Of these, 278 patients had hospitalized nephrolithiasis and 556 were healthy controls. The tea intake was assessed using a validated self-administered food frequency questionnaire. Multivariate conditional logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between tea intake and hospitalized nephrolithiasis. Results After adjustment, a higher frequency of tea intake was found to be negatively associated with the risk of hospitalized nephrolithiasis. Compared with participants who never drank tea, the odds ratio (95% confidence interval) [OR (95% CI)] for participants who drank ≥1 cup (180 mL) of tea per day was 0.418 (0.192–0.911) (P for trend = 0.013). Moreover, the adjusted OR (95% CI) for participants who drank ≥1 cup of green tea and black tea per day was 0.189 (0.069–0.520) (P for trend <0.001) and 1.248 (0.437–3.559) (P for trend = 0.654), respectively. Conclusions Increased tea intake was found to be associated with a lower risk of hospitalized nephrolithiasis among Chinese adults. This finding may assist in the prevention of hospitalized nephrolithiasis.

Abstract
Phenolic compounds are components with proven beneficial effects on the human body, primarily due to their antioxidant activity. In view of the high consumption of tea and the numerous factors that affect the nutritional value of its infusions, the aim of this study was to identify the effects of tea type and duration of leaf extraction with water on the levels of phenolic compounds and other components that determine biological activity (oxalates, Ca, Na, Cu, and Mn). Based on assays, infusions of red tea prepared for 20 min were found to be the best source of phenolics (202.9 mg/100 mL), whereas the lowest level of these compounds was determined in infusions of black tea extracted from leaves for 30 min (46.9 mg/100 mL). The highest degree of increase in polyphenol content (by approx. 50%) was noted in red and green tea infused for between 10 and 20 min, whereas for black tea, polyphenol levels decreased with time. The biological activity of tea infusions appears to be determined to the greatest extent by the interactions between phenolic compounds and oxalates (r = 0.6209), calcium (r = 0.8516), and sodium (0.8045). A daily intake of three to four mugs (1 L) of tea infusions provides the human body the entire amount of phenolics recommended for health reasons (as regards red tea, this is possible at 1/3 of the volume) and covers the daily requirement for manganese, as well as (partially) copper.

Abstract
Hyperuricemia is an abnormal purine metabolic disease that occurs when there is an excess of uric acid in the blood, associated with cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, gout, and renal disease. Dietary intervention is one of the most promising strategies for preventing hyperuricemia and controlling uric acid concentrations. Tea (Camellia sinensis) is known as one of the most common beverages and the source of dietary polyphenols. However, the effect of tea on hyperuricemia is unclear. Recent evidence shows that a lower risk of hyperuricemia is associated with tea intake. To better understand the anti-hyperuricemia effect of tea, this review first briefly describes the pathogenesis of hyperuricemia and the processing techniques of different types of tea. Next, the epidemiological and experimental studies of tea and its bioactive compounds on hyperuricemia in recent years were reviewed. Particular attention was paid to the anti-hyperuricemia mechanisms targeting the hepatic uric acid synthase, renal uric acid transporters, and intestinal microbiota. Additionally, the desirable intake of tea for preventing hyperuricemia is provided. Understanding the anti-hyperuricemia effect and mechanisms of tea can better utilize it as a preventive dietary strategy.HighlightsHigh purine diet, excessive alcohol/fructose consumption, and less exercise/sleep are the induction factors of hyperuricemia.Tea and tea compounds showed alleviated effects for hyperuricemia, especially polyphenols.Tea (containing caffeine or not) is not associated with a higher risk of hyperuricemia.Xanthine oxidase inhibition (reduce uric acid production), Nrf2 activation, and urate transporters regulation (increase uric acid excretion) are the potential molecular targets of anti-hyperuricemic effect of tea.About 5 g tea intake per day may be beneficial for hyperuricemia prevention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tea plants originated in southwestern China. Guizhou Plateau is an original center of tea plants, and is rich in germplasm resources. However, the genetic diversity, population structure and distribution characteristics of cultivated-type tea plants in the region are unknown. In this study, we explored the genetic diversity and geographical distribution of cultivated-type tea accessions in Guizhou Plateau. RESULTS We used 112,072 high-quality genotyping-by-sequencing to analyze the genetic diversity, principal components, phylogeny, population structure, and linkage disequilibrium, and develop a core collection of 253 cultivated-type tea plant accessions from Guizhou Plateau. The results showed Genetic diversity of the cultivated-type tea accessions of the Pearl River Basin was significantly higher than that of the cultivated-type tea accessions of the Yangtze River Basin. Three inferred pure groups (CG-1, CG-2 and CG-3) and one inferred admixture group (CG-4), were identified by a population structure analysis, and verified by principal component and phylogenetic analyses. The highest genetic distance and differentiation coefficients were determined for CG-2 vs CG-3. The lower genetic distance and differentiation coefficients were determined for CG-4 vs CG-2 and CG-4 vs CG-3, respectively. We developed a core set and a primary set. The primary and core sets contained 77.0 and 33.6% of all individuals in the initial set, respectively. The primary set may serve as the primary population in genome-wide association studies, while the core collection may serve as the core population in multiple treatment setting studies. CONCLUSIONS The present study demonstrated the genetic diversity and geographical distribution characteristics of cultivated-type tea plants in Guizhou Plateau. Significant differences in genetic diversity and evolutionary direction were detected between the ancient landraces of the Pearl River Basin and the those of the Yangtze River Basin. Major rivers and ancient hubs were largely responsible for the genetic exchange between the Pearl River Basin and the Yangtze River Basin ancient landraces as well as the formation of the ancient hubs evolutionary group. Genetic diversity, population structure and core collection elucidated by this study will facilitate further genetic studies, germplasm protection, and breeding of tea plants.

Abstract
Copious fluid intake is the most essential nutritional measure in the treatment of urolithiasis, and is suggested to be a protective factor in the primary prevention of urinary stone formation. Although the intake of black tea contributes to daily fluid intake, the high oxalate content could outweigh the beneficial effect of urine dilution. The present study investigated the effect of black tea consumption on urinary risk factors for kidney stone formation. Ten healthy men received a standardized diet for a period of ten days. Subjects consumed 1.5 L/day of fruit tea (0 mg/day oxalate) during the 5-day control phase, which was replaced by 1.5 L/day of black tea (86 mg/day oxalate) during the 5-day test phase. Fractional and 24-h urines were obtained. The intake of black tea did not significantly alter 24-h urinary oxalate excretion. Urinary citrate, an important inhibitor of calcium stone formation, increased significantly, while the relative supersaturation of calcium oxalate, uric acid, and struvite remained unchanged. No significantly increased risk for kidney stone formation could be derived from the ingestion of black tea in normal subjects. Further research is needed to evaluate the impact of black tea consumption in kidney stone patients with intestinal hyperabsorption of oxalate.

Abstract
RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE Coffee and caffeine consumption have been associated with a lower risk of kidney stones in observational studies. We conducted a Mendelian randomization study to assess the causal nature of these associations. STUDY DESIGN Mendelian randomization analysis. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS Independent genetic variants associated with coffee and caffeine consumption at the genome-wide significance level were selected from previously published meta-analyses as instrumental variables. Summary-level data for kidney stones were obtained from the UK Biobank study (6,536 cases and 388,508 noncases) and the FinnGen consortium (3,856 cases and 172,757 noncases). EXPOSURE Genetically predicted coffee and caffeine consumption. OUTCOME Clinically diagnosed kidney stones. ANALYTICAL APPROACH Mendelian randomization methods were used to calculate causal estimates. Estimates from the 2 sources were combined using the fixed-effects meta-analysis methods. RESULTS Genetically predicted coffee and caffeine consumption was associated with a lower risk of kidney stones in the UK Biobank study, and the associations were directionally similar in the FinnGen consortium. The combined odds ratio of kidney stones was 0.60 (95% CI, 0.46-0.79; P < 0.001) per a genetically predicted 50% increase in coffee consumption and 0.81 (95% CI, 0.69-0.94; P = 0.005) per a genetically predicted 80-mg increase in caffeine consumption. LIMITATIONS Genetic influence on kidney stone risk via pathways not involving coffee or caffeine. CONCLUSIONS Using genetic data, this study provides evidence that higher coffee and caffeine consumption may cause a reduction in kidney stones.

Abstract
The prevalence of kidney stone disease is increasing worldwide. The recurrence rate of urinary stones is estimated to be up to 50%. Nephrolithiasis is associated with increased risk of chronic and end stage kidney disease. Diet composition is considered to play a crucial role in urinary stone formation. There is strong evidence that an inadequate fluid intake is the major dietary risk factor for urolithiasis. While the benefit of high fluid intake has been confirmed, the effect of different beverages, such as tap water, mineral water, fruit juices, soft drinks, tea and coffee, are debated. Other nutritional factors, including dietary protein, carbohydrates, oxalate, calcium and sodium chloride can also modulate the urinary risk profile and contribute to the risk of kidney stone formation. The assessment of nutritional risk factors is an essential component in the specific dietary therapy of kidney stone patients. An appropriate dietary intervention can contribute to the effective prevention of recurrent stones and reduce the burden of invasive surgical procedures for the treatment of urinary stone disease. This narrative review has intended to provide a comprehensive and updated overview on the role of nutrition and diet in kidney stone disease.

Abstract
A few prospective studies have suggested that tea, alcohol, and fruit consumption may reduce the risk of kidney stones. However, little is known whether such associations and their combined effect persist in Chinese adults, for whom the popular tea and alcohol drinks are different from those investigated in the aforementioned studies. The present study included 502,621 participants from the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB). Information about tea, alcohol, and fruit consumption was self-reported at baseline. The first documented cases of kidney stones during follow-up were collected through linkage with the national health insurance system. Cox regression was used to calculate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). During a median of 11.1 years of follow-up, we collected 12,407 cases of kidney stones. After multivariable adjustment, tea, alcohol, and fruit consumption were found to be negatively associated with kidney stone risk, but the linear trend was only found in tea and fruit consumption. Compared with non-tea consumers, the HR (95% CI) for participants who drank ≥7 cups of tea per day was 0.73 (0.65-0.83). Compared with non-alcohol consumers, the HR (95% CI) was 0.79 (0.72-0.87) for participants who drank pure alcohol of 30.0-59.9 g per day but had no further decrease with a higher intake of alcohol. Compared with less-than-weekly consumers, the HR (95% CI) for daily fruit consumers was 0.81 (0.75-0.87). Even for those who did not drink alcohol excessively, increasing tea and fruit consumption could also independently reduce the stone risk. Among Chinese adults, tea, alcohol, and fruit consumption was associated with a lower risk of kidney stones.

Abstract
Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) can cause oxidative stress of tissues and adversely influence homeostasis of the body. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) with an antioxidative effect can effectively eliminate the ROS, but an evident weakness associated with it is the relatively poor cytocompatibility. Combining with other biomacromolecules such as human hair keratin (KE) and using nanotechnology to prepare nanoparticles can improve this situation. By covalent bonding, we assembled KE and EGCG into KE-EGCG nanoparticles (NANO) with size of about 50 nm and characterized them by DLS, UV, FTIR, NMR, and XPS. Free radical scavenging experiments show that antioxidant properties of the obtained NANO are superior to that of vitamin C. Cell culture experiments also show that the NANO can effectively protect the proliferation of L929 cells and HUVEC cells. In addition, we also used RAW264.7 cells to establish a H2O2-induced cell injury model and an lipopolysaccharide-induced cellular inflammatory model to evaluate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of NANO. The results show that the NANO can effectively prevent cells from oxidative damage and reduce inflammatory expression of the cells, indicating that the NANO have a good antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effect on cells which can be applied to many diseases related to oxidative stress.

Abstract
PURPOSE Endourology has undergone fundamental changes over the last 2 decades. Maintaining low intrarenal pressure (IRP) during upper urinary tract procedures is an established concept. However, researchers have not yet studied the concept of reduced intravesical pressures (IVPs) during transurethral (TUR) surgery as thoroughly. Low IVP is supposed to decrease complications as fluid retention, TUR syndrome, and incidence of fever. The study aims to give an overview of the contemporarily existing concepts and specify the term of low IVP to avoid TUR-related complications and optimize TUR-related results. METHODS A literature search was performed using PubMed, restricted to original English-written articles, including animal, artificial model, and human studies. Different keywords were transurethral resection, transurethral enucleation, transurethral vaporization, pressure, fluid absorption, and TUR syndrome. RESULTS Analyzed mean IVPs during TUR vary between 11 and 35 cmH2O but are mostly kept below 30 cmH2O. Mean maximum IVPs during TUR range from 20 to 55 cmH2O. Maximum IVPs seem to be lower when surgeons utilize continuous flow resection, and irrigation pressures are kept low. The results demonstrate a strong correlation between IVP levels and fluid absorption. CONCLUSIONS IVP increase remains a neglected predictor of transurethral procedure complications, and endourologists should consider its intraoperative monitoring. Further research is necessary to quantify generated pressures and introduce means of controlling them.
