Abstract
BACKGROUND Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is the early predementia syndrome. that occurs even before the development of objective cognitive decline. SCD plus refers to an additional set of criteria that increases the likelihood of developing mild cognitive impairment and further progressing to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Studying the progression of SCD-plus participants will help in understanding the importance of diagnosing this condition at an early stage and delaying its onset. OBJECTIVE The present tries to examine neurocognitive changes in individuals who met the criteria of SCD-plus patients. The study also investigated the imaging correlates of these individuals in both cohorts. METHODS This study included 94 participants from Srinivaspura Aging, Neuro Senescence, and COGnition (SANSCOG) and Tata Longitudinal Study of Aging (TLSA) cohorts who satisfy the criteria of SCD plus. Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the SCD plus participants and healthy controls. Regression analysis was performed to find the association between SCD plus and cognition. RESULTS The SCD-plus group performed poorer than the healthy group in episodic memory delayed recall (p = 0.049), name face recognition (p = 0.023), and letter fluency (p = 0.004) tasks. The generalized linear model revealed that the SCD-plus group had lower left cerebellar cortex (p = 0.010) and right inferior occipital cortex (p = 0.016) volumes than the healthy control group. CONCLUSIONS The participants in the SCD-plus group performed poorly on memory and language-related tasks, and the volumes of the associated brain regions decreased. This study suggested that the SCD-plus group had characteristics similar to AD group and can help in identifying AD at the earliest.

Abstract
The EAT-Lancet Commission proposed a planetary health diet to improve human health within planetary boundaries; however, little is known about the association between adherence to this diet and cognitive decline. We used data from three waves of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health to evaluate the association between the planetary health diet and cognitive decline using linear mixed-effects models. Here we show that in 11,737 participants (mean (s.d.) age 51.6 (9.0) years, 54% women and 53% white), higher adherence to the planetary health diet was associated with slower memory decline (P = 0.046) and that income was a modifier in this association (P < 0.001). Adherence to the planetary health diet was associated with slower decline of memory (P = 0.040) and global cognition (P = 0.009) in high-income participants. No association was found among low-income participants. The results of our study highlight that the promotion of healthy dietary patterns should take into consideration income barriers as well as differences in dietary habits to achieve high adherence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive impairment is projected to affect a preponderant proportion of the aging population. Lifelong dietary habits have been hypothesized to play a role in preventing cognitive decline. Among the most studied dietary components, fish consumptionhas been extensively studied for its potential effects on the human brain. AIMS To perform a meta-analysis of observational studies exploring the association between fish intake and cognitive impairment/decline and all types of dementia. METHODS A systematic search of electronic databases was performed to identify observational studies providing quantitative data on fish consumption and outcomes of interest. Random effects models for meta-analyses using only extreme exposure categories, subgroup analyses, and dose-response analyses were performed to estimate cumulative risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS The meta-analysis comprised 35 studies. Individuals reporting the highest vs. the lowest fish consumption were associated with a lower likelihood of cognitive impairment/decline (RR = 0.82, 95% CI: 0.75, 0.90, I2 = 61.1%), dementia (RR = 0.82, 95% CI: 0.73, 0.93, I2 = 38.7%), and Alzheimer's disease (RR = 0.80, 95% CI: 0.67, 0.96, I2 = 20.3%). The dose-response relation revealed a significantly decreased risk of cognitive impairment/decline and all cognitive outcomes across higher levels of fish intake up to 30% for 150 g/d (RR = 0.70, 95% CI: 0.52, 0.95). The results of this relation based on APOE ε4 allele status was mixed based on the outcome investigated. CONCLUSIONS Current findings suggest fish consumption is associated with a lower risk of cognitive impairment/decline in a dose-response manner, while for dementia and Alzheimer's disease there is a need for further studies to improve the strength of evidence.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the relationships between dietary patterns and perceived stress with memory deficits in 291 patients with heart failure aged 45-85 years. A total of 142 (48.8%) patients reported memory deficit. Three dietary patterns were identified by K-means clustering: nut-fruit-dairy, meat-processed, and traditional (high intake of cereals) diets. Compared to the traditional diet, the nut-fruit-dairy diet and meat-processed diet were associated with lower levels of deficits in short-term memory, delayed memory, and overall memory. What's more, perceived stress was positively associated with deficits in short-term memory and overall memory, but the association was only found in patients adhering to the traditional diet using stratified analyses. Our findings suggest that adhering to a healthy diet may be conducive to improving deficits in short-term memory, delayed memory, and overall memory, while also buffering the adverse association between perceived stress and deficits in short-term memory and overall memory.

Abstract
Background Fish contains high-quality omega-3 fatty acids, protein, vitamins, and minerals and due to this it is termed as an essential component of a balanced diet. But there have been concerns raised about the risks of consuming fish that is contaminated with toxins such as methylmercury, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, pesticides, and plastic waste. Consumption of contaminated fish containing these pollutants is raising global mortality and morbidity rates. Scope and approaches The review examines the current research outputs on the health benefits and potential health risks of fish consumption. The review also discusses various approaches to mitigating the health problems caused by fish consumption, highlights the roles of balancing the risks and benefits when consuming fish. Key findings and conclusion Different findings indicated that contaminants cause cancer, kidney failure, adverse neurological effect, cardiovascular diseases, and so on to vulnerable groups such as pregnant, child breast-feeding and children. In conclusion, there is a need to get more tangible evidence about the advantages and disadvantages of fish consumption to safeguard the wellbeing of the society.

Abstract
As the world's population ages the prevalence of age-related health concerns is increasing, including neurodegeneration disorders such as mild cognitive impairment, vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Diet is a key modifiable risk factor for the development of neurodegeneration, likely due to gut-brain axis interactions related to neuroinflammation. Analyses of dietary patterns identified dairy as being part of a cognitively healthy diet; however, its contribution to cognitive outcomes is difficult to discern. This narrative review evaluates the literature to determine whether there is sufficient evidence that the consumption of dairy products helps to maintain cognitive function in later life. A search using the terms (dairy OR milk OR cheese OR yogurt OR yogurt) AND ("mild cognitive impairment" OR dementia OR "Alzheimer's disease") identified 796 articles. After screening and sorting, 23 observational studies and 6 intervention studies were identified. The results of the observational studies implied that the relationship between total dairy consumption and cognitive outcomes is inverse U-shaped, with moderate consumption (1-2 servings per day) being the most beneficial. The analysis of the intake of different types of dairy products indicated that fermented products, particularly cheese, were most likely responsible for the observed benefits. The experimental studies all used dairy-derived peptides produced during fermentation as the dietary intervention, and the results indicated that these could be an effective treatment for early-stage cognitive impairment. Further experimental studies with whole dairy products, particularly fermented dairy, are needed to determine whether the regular consumption of these foods should be recommended to maximize the likelihood of healthy cognitive aging.

Abstract
Introduction The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the association between breakfast patterns and executive function among adolescents in Shanghai, China. Methods In 2022, we randomly recruited 3,012 adolescents aged 12-13 years from all administrative districts in Shanghai. Breakfast information was collected by parents using a one-day recall method. Executive function was measured using the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Parent Version. Latent Class Analysis was performed to identify breakfast patterns based on the food groups in the Diet Quality Questionnaire for China. Results Breakfast patterns were classified into three categories: "Egg and milk foods", "Grain foods", and "Abundant foods", except for adolescents who skipped breakfast. Logistic regression was used to estimate the multivariate odds ratio (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for the association between breakfast patterns and potential executive dysfunction. Adolescents in the "Abundant foods" class had a lower risk of executive dysfunction in terms of initiate (OR: 0.36; 95% CI: 0.17-0.76), and organization of materials (OR: 0.18; 95% CI: 0.04-0.94), compared to those who skipped breakfast. Similarly, the breakfast patterns of "Grain foods" and "Egg and milk foods" were associated with a lower risk of executive dysfunction, including initiate and working memory. Discussion Our findings suggest that breakfast patterns were associated with executive function. The improvement of breakfast patterns among adolescents should be a significant public health intervention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to assess the effect on cognitive function of adding dairy (total, fermented, non-fermented, full fat, low fat, and sugary) to the diet and of substituting some food groups for dairy. DESIGN Secondary analysis of a prospective population-based cohort study. PARTICIPANTS We analyzed data from 1334 cognitively healthy participants (median age 67 years at baseline) with a mean follow-up of 5.6 years from the CoLaus|PsyColaus cohort in Lausanne, Switzerland. MEASUREMENTS The participants completed a food frequency questionnaire at baseline and cognitive tests at baseline and at follow-up. Clinical dementia rating was the primary outcome. Subjective cognitive decline, memory, verbal fluency, executive and motor functions were secondary outcomes. METHODS Our exposure was the consumption of total and 5 sub-types of dairy products (g/d). We used marginal structural models to compute average causal effects of 1) increasing dairy consumption by 100 g/d and 2) substituting 100 g/d of meat, fish, eggs, fruits and vegetables with dairy on the outcomes. We used inverse probability of the treatment and lost to follow-up weighting to account for measured confounding and non-random loss to follow-up. RESULTS Overall, the effects of adding dairy products to the diet on cognition were negligible and imprecise. No substitution had a substantial and consistent effect on clinical dementia rating. The substitution of fish [11.7% (-3% to 26.5%)] and eggs [18% (2.3%-33.7%)] for dairy products could negatively impact verbal memory and neurolinguistic processes. CONCLUSION We found no effect of adding dairy to the diet or substituting meat, vegetables or fruit for dairy on cognitive function in this cohort of older adults. The substitution of fish and eggs for dairy could have a negative effect on some secondary outcomes, but more studies modeling food substitutions are needed to confirm these results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Poor cardiometabolic health is associated with dementia. Considering previous meta-analyses have confirmed associations between ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and cardiometabolic disease, we were interested in the contribution of UPF consumption to the risk of developing dementia. METHODS We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of all records registered on Ovid Medline and Web of Science from inception until December 2022 [PROSPERO (CRD42023388363)]. Studies that assessed UPF consumption in adults, determined according to NOVA, and that reported dementia (Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia and mild cognitive impairment) determined by clearly stated diagnostic criteria (including formal assessment of dementia or use of diagnostic codes) were included. The association between UPF consumption and dementia was assessed using random-effects meta-analysis, controlling for confounding variables. Study quality was assessed using the Newcastle Ottawa Scale and evidence credibility evaluated using the NutriGrade system. RESULTS Seven thousand ten records were screened, and 122 records underwent full text review. From these, 10 observational (8 longitudinal) studies, analysing 867,316 individuals, were included. Included studies adjusted for age, socioeconomic status and co-morbidity, alongside other confounders. High (vs. low) intake of UPF was associated with increased risk of dementia (pooled relative risk 1.44 (95% confidence interval 1.09-1.90) (p = 0.02)) (I2 = 97.0%), although moderate (vs. low) intake of UPF was not (1.12 (0.96-1.31) (0.13)) (85.0%). Funnel plots demonstrate low risk of publication bias. CONCLUSION High UPF consumption is associated with dementia. Public health measures to reduce overconsumption of UPFs are imperative to reduce the burden of dementia.

Abstract
Dairy intake may influence cognition through several molecular pathways. However, epidemiologic studies yield inconsistent results, and no dose-response meta-analysis has been conducted yet. Therefore, we performed a systematic review with a dose-response meta-analysis about the association between dairy intake and cognitive decline or incidence of dementia. We investigated prospective studies with a follow-up ≥6 mo on cognitive decline or dementia incidence in adults without known chronic conditions through a systematic search of Embase, Medline, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Google Scholar from inception to 11 July 2023. We evaluated the dose-response association using a random-effects model. We identified 15 eligible cohort studies with >300,000 participants and a median follow-up of 11.4 y. We observed a negative nonlinear association between cognitive decline/dementia incidence and dairy intake as assessed through the quantity of consumption, with the nadir at ∼150 g/d (risk ratio: 0.88; 95% confidence interval: 0.78, 0.99). Conversely, we found an almost linear negative association when we considered the frequency of consumption (risk ratio for linear trend: 0.84; 95% confidence interval: 0.77, 0.92 for 1 time/d increase of dairy products). Stratified analysis by dairy products showed different shapes of the association with linear inverse relationship for milk intake, whereas possibly nonlinear for cheese. The inverse association was limited to Asian populations characterized by generally lower intake of dairy products, compared with the null association reported by European studies. In conclusion, our study suggests a nonlinear inverse association between dairy intake and cognitive decline or dementia, also depending on dairy types and population characteristics, although the heterogeneity was still high in overall and several subgroup analyses. Additional studies should be performed on this topic, including a wider range of intake and types of dairy products, to confirm a potential preventing role of dairy intake on cognitive decline and identify ideal intake doses. Abstract
BACKGROUND The apolipoprotein E gene (APOE ε-2/3/4, combined as 6 different genotypes: ε-22/23/24/33/34/44) and insulin status modulate dementia risk and play a role in the metabolism of macronutrients. OBJECTIVES We aimed to examine APOE-genotype and fasting insulin as effect modifiers of the slopes between dietary macronutrients and cognitive performance among older adults at risk of dementia. METHODS Panel analyses-with diet and cognition measured at baseline and follow-up at years 1 and 2-were performed in a sub-sample from the FINGER (Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability) trial (n = 676, 60-77 y, 46% females, all nondiabetics). The associations between macronutrients (3-d food records, z-scores) and global cognition (modified Neuropsychological Test Battery, z-score) were analyzed in mixed regression models adjusted for confounders selected a priori. After a gradient was implied by the point estimates in categorical APOE analyses, we investigated a continuous APOE variable [APOE-gradient, coded -1 (for ε-23), -0.5 (ε-24), 0 (ε-33), 1 (ε-34), 2 (ε-44)] as an effect-modifier. RESULTS At increasing levels of the APOE-gradient, a relatively more favorable slope between diet and cognition was observed for a lower carbohydrate/fat ratio [β = -0.040, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.074, -0.006; P = 0.020 for interaction diet × APOE-gradient), and higher protein (β = 0.075, 95% CI: 0.042, 0.109; P = 9.4 × 10-6). Insulin concentration (log-linear) modulated the association between the carbohydrate/fat ratio and cognition by a quadratic interaction (β = -0.016, P = 0.039). Coherent findings for exploratory predictors (fiber, fat subtypes, composite score, metabolic biomarkers) were compatible with published hypotheses of differential dietary adaptation by APOE, with cognition among ε-33 being relatively independent of dietary parameters-implying "metabolic flexibility." Antagonistic slopes to cognition for ε-23 (positive) compared with ε-34 and ε-44 (negative) were found for a Higher-carbohydrates-fiber-Lower-fat-protein composite score, even as within-subjects effects. CONCLUSIONS APOE-based precision nutrition appears conceptually promising, but replications in wider samples are warranted, as well as support from trials. Both relative hyper- and hypoinsulinemia might modulate the effect of diet on cognition.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the association between dairy intake and risk of incident dementia in older adults. METHODS A longitudinal analysis of dairy intake with incident dementia was conducted using a cohort study of 11,637 non-disabled Japanese older adults aged ≥ 65 years followed-up for up to 5.7 years (mean: 5.0 years). Data on milk, yogurt, and cheese intake were collected using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Total dairy intake was calculated as the sum of the daily intake of milk, yogurt, and cheese, which was sex-specifically categorized in quintiles. Dementia cases were retrieved from the public long-term care insurance database. Cox proportional hazards model was used to estimate multivariable hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for incident dementia. RESULTS During 58,013 person-years of follow-up, 946 persons developed dementia. In the primary analysis, compare to the lowest quintile of total dairy intake, Q2 showed a slightly decreased incident dementia risk (HR for Q2 vs Q1: 0.90, 95% CI: 0.73-1.10) after fully adjusted for demographic, lifestyle, psychological, and nutritional factors, and diseases history. Compared to non-consumers of milk, those consuming for 1-2 times/month showed a lower risk of incident dementia (fully-adjusted HR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.57-1.02). Daily yogurt consumers also had a reduced risk (fully-adjusted HR: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.74-1.09). But daily cheese consumers showed an increased risk of dementia (fully-adjusted HR: 1.28, 95% CI: 0.91-1.79). In the sensitivity analysis where we excluded dementia cases ascertained in the first 2 years, results were consistent with those from the primary analysis and we further found that yogurt intake might be inversely associated with dementia risk (p for trend = 0.025). CONCLUSION Low total dairy intake or low milk intake frequency might be associated with lower incident dementia risk, however daily cheese consumers seemed to have an increased risk. Our study also suggested a possible inverse dose-response association between yogurt consumption and dementia risk, but further studies are needed to confirm whether this benefit was from yogurt intake itself or as a part of a healthy dietary pattern.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Previous studies have investigated whether milk consumption has a role in preventing the development of cognitive impairment, but the results were inconsistent. Importantly, most of them have disregarded the role of different types of milk. This study aimed to examine the associations between different types of milk consumption and the risk of dementia. METHODS In this large-scale cohort study, participants without cognitive impairment at baseline were included from the UK Biobank. The type of milk mainly used was self-reported at baseline, including full-cream milk, skimmed-milk, soy milk, other milk, and no milk. The primary outcome was all-cause dementia. Secondary outcomes included Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. RESULTS Of the 307,271 participants included in the study (mean age 56.3 [SD 8.1] years), 3789 (1.2%) incident all-cause dementia cases were observed over a median follow-up of 12.3 years. After adjustment for potential confounders, only soy milk consumers had a statistically significantly lower risk of all-cause dementia compared with no milk consumers (hazard ratio [HR], 0.69; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.54 to 0.90). When compared with soy milk non-consumers consisting of full-cream milk, skimmed-milk, and other milk consumers, soy milk consumers still showed a lower risk of all-cause dementia (HR, 0.76; 95% CI, 0.63 to 0.92), and there was no significant interaction with genetic risk for dementia (P for interaction = 0.15). Soy milk consumers showed a lower risk of Alzheimer's disease (HR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.51 to 0.94; P = 0.02), while the association was not significant for vascular dementia (HR, 0.72; 95% CI, 0.47 to 1.12; P = 0.14). CONCLUSIONS The main consumption of soy milk was associated with a lower risk of dementia, particularly non-vascular dementia. Additional studies are needed to investigate how this association varies with the dose or frequency of the consumption of soy milk and to examine the generalizability of these findings in different populations.

Abstract
Across the lifespan, the human body and brain endure the impact of a plethora of exogenous and endogenous factors that determine the health outcome in old age. The overwhelming inter-individual variance spans between progressive frailty with loss of autonomy to largely preserved physical, cognitive, and social functions. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the diverse aging trajectories can inform future strategies to maintain a healthy body and brain. Here we provide a comprehensive overview of the current literature on lifetime factors governing brain health. We present the growing body of evidence that unhealthy alimentary regime, sedentary behaviour, sleep pathologies, cardio-vascular risk factors, and chronic inflammation exert their harmful effects in a cumulative and gradual manner, and that timely and efficient intervention could promote healthy and successful aging. We discuss the main effects and interactions between these risk factors and the resulting brain health outcomes to follow with a description of current strategies aiming to eliminate, treat, or counteract the risk factors. We conclude that the detailed insights about modifiable risk factors could inform personalized multi-domain strategies for brain health maintenance on the background of increased longevity.

Abstract
This umbrella review aims to provide a systematic and comprehensive overview of current evidence from prospective studies on the diverse health effects of cheese consumption. We searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library to identify meta-analyses/pooled analyses of prospective studies examining the association between cheese consumption and major health outcomes from inception to August 31, 2022. We reanalyzed and updated previous meta-analyses and performed de novo meta-analyses with recently published prospective studies, where appropriate. We calculated the summary effect size, 95% prediction confidence intervals, between-study heterogeneity, small-study effects, and excess significance bias for each health outcome. We identified 54 eligible articles of meta-analyses/pooled analyses. After adding newly published original articles, we performed 35 updated meta-analyses and 4 de novo meta-analyses. Together with 8 previous meta-analyses, we finally included 47 unique health outcomes. Cheese consumption was inversely associated with all-cause mortality (highest compared with lowest category: RR = 0.95; 95% CI: 0.92, 0.99), cardiovascular mortality (RR = 0.93; 95% CI: 0.88, 0.99), incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) (RR = 0.92; 95% CI: 0.89, 0.96), coronary heart disease (CHD) (RR = 0.92; 95% CI: 0.86, 0.98), stroke (RR = 0.93; 95% CI: 0.89, 0.98), estrogen receptor-negative (ER-) breast cancer (RR = 0.89; 95% CI: 0.82, 0.97), type 2 diabetes (RR = 0.93; 95% CI: 0.88, 0.98), total fracture (RR = 0.90; 95% CI: 0.86, 0.95), and dementia (RR = 0.81; 95% CI: 0.66, 0.99). Null associations were found for other outcomes. According to the NutriGrade scoring system, moderate quality of evidence was observed for inverse associations of cheese consumption with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, incident CVD, CHD, and stroke, and for null associations with cancer mortality, incident hypertension, and prostate cancer. Our findings suggest that cheese consumption has neutral to moderate benefits for human health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Red wine and dairy products have been staples in human diets for a long period. However, the impact of red wine and dairy intake on brain network activity remains ambiguous and requires further investigation. METHODS This study investigated the associations between dairy and red wine consumption and seven neural networks' connectivity with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from a sub-cohort of the UK Biobank database. Linear mixed models were employed to regress dairy and red wine consumption against the intrinsic functional connectivity for each neural network. Interactions with Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk factors, including apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4) genotype, TOMM40 genotype, and family history of AD, were also assessed. RESULT More red wine consumption was associated with enhanced connectivity in the central executive function network and posterior default mode network. Greater milk intake was correlated with more left executive function network connectivity, while higher cheese consumption was linked to reduced posterior default mode network connectivity. For participants without a family history of Alzheimer's disease (AD), increased red wine consumption was positively correlated with enhanced left executive function network connectivity. In contrast, participants with a family history of AD displayed diminished network connectivity in relation to their red wine consumption. The association between cheese consumption and neural network connectivity was influenced by APOE4 status, TOMM40 status, and family history, exhibiting contrasting patterns across different subgroups. CONCLUSION The findings of this study indicate that family history modifies the relationship between red wine consumption and network strength. The interaction effects between cheese intake and network connectivity may vary depending on the presence of different genetic factors.

Abstract
Diet modification may contribute to the prevention of age-related cognitive decline. The association between dairy product consumption and cognitive function in older people remains unknown. We investigated whether cheese intake is associated with lower cognitive function (LCF) in community-dwelling older adults. This cross-sectional study included 1503 adults aged over 65 years. The analyzed data were obtained through face-to-face interviews and functional ability measurement. Cognitive function was assessed using the mini-mental state examination (MMSE), and a score ≤23 was defined as LCF. The prevalence of LCF was 4.6%, and this group had smaller calf circumference, slower usual walking speed, and a more frequent history of anemia than subjects with MMSE scores >23. After adjusting for confounding factors, logistic regression analysis revealed cheese intake (odds ratio (OR) = 0.404, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.198-0.824), age (OR = 1.170, 95% CI = 1.089-1.256), usual walking speed (OR = 0.171, 95% CI = 0.062-0.472) and calf circumference (OR = 0.823, 95% CI = 0.747-0.908) to be significant factors associated with LCF. Although the present study was an analysis of cross-sectional data of Japanese community-dwelling older adults, the results suggest that cheese intake is inversely associated with LCF.

Abstract
Some evidence shows that beverage consumption has an impact on cognitive performance. This is a follow-up study of dietary habits and cognitive function in the Chinese middle-aged and elderly population. The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between beverage consumption and cognitive impairment. The source and grouping of the participants can be seen in the previous article, "Study of Diet Habits and Cognitive Function in the Chinese Middle-Aged and Elderly Population: The Association between Folic Acid, B Vitamins, Vitamin D, Coenzyme Q10 Supplementation and Cognitive Ability". Among 892 participants, one-third (296) completed both Amyloid beta(Aβ)-PET and plasma biomarkers. The results showed that the consumption of beverages (green tea, coffee, pure milk) was a protective factor for cognitive impairment, daily water consumption <1500 mL (especially <500 mL) was a risk factor for cognitive impairment, and the above correlated with baseline cognitive status. The relationship of green tea, coffee, and pure milk consumption with cognitive impairment was related to gender. We also found that among the participants with Aβ deposition, the consumption of pure milk and green tea was associated with low levels of p-Tau-181. In conclusion, the relationship between beverage consumption and cognitive impairment in Chinese middle-aged and elderly adults may be related to baseline cognitive status, gender, and Aβ deposition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence on the association of the Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet with cognitive aging is limited and inconsistent. OBJECTIVE We examined how the MIND diet is related to cognitive function and its decline among middle-aged and older adults. METHODS We included 4066 participants with baseline dietary assessment and at least one cognitive test from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) in 1997, 2000, 2004, and 2006, with a median follow-up of 3 years. The modified MIND diet score (range: 0-12) was calculated based on nine healthy and three unhealthy food groups. Linear mixed-effect models were used to examine the association of adherence to the MIND diet with z-scores of cognitive function and cognitive decline. We also conducted a meta-analysis including our findings and seven other cohort studies. RESULTS At baseline, median MIND diet scores for the increasing tertile were 3.0, 4.0, and 5.5, respectively. Participants with higher MIND diet scores had significant better global cognitive function. The adjusted difference in global cognitive function z-score for every three-point increment of MIND diet scores was 0.11 (95% CI, 0.06, 0.16, p-trend<0.001), which was approximately equivalent to being one year younger in age. Consumption of nuts, fish, red meats, and tea showed independent positive associations with cognitive function, and fried food consumption exhibited negative associations. In the meta-analysis of 26,103 participants, one standardized deviation increment of the MIND score was associated with 0.042 (95 % CI 0.020, 0.065) units higher in global cognitive function z-score and 0.014 (95 % CI -0.010, 0.037) units slower in annual cognitive decline. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that higher adherence to the MIND diet was associated with better cognitive function and potentially slower cognitive decline in later life. Further large-scale observational and interventional studies are warranted to elucidate the cognitive effects of the MIND diet. Abstract
The effects of docosahexaenoic acid supplements on cognitive function have long been demonstrated, but the effects of alpha-linolenic acid, a precursor of docosahexaenoic acid, have not been fully tested. The search for functional foods that delay cognitive decline in the older adults is considered a very important area from a preventive perspective. The aim of this study was to conduct an exploratory evaluation of alpha-linolenic acid on various cognitive functions in healthy older subjects. Sixty healthy older adults aged 65 to 80 years, living in Miyagi prefecture, without cognitive impairment or depression, were included in the randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Study subjects were randomly divided into two groups and received either 3.7 g/day of flaxseed oil containing 2.2 g of alpha-linolenic acid, or an isocaloric placebo (corn oil) containing 0.04 g of alpha-linolenic acid for 12 weeks. The primary endpoints were six cognitive functions closely related to everyday life: attention and concentration, executive function, perceptual reasoning, working memory, processing speed and memory function. After 12 weeks of intake, changes in verbal fluency scores on the frontal assessment battery at bedside, a neuropsychological test assessing executive function, in which participants are asked to answer as many words as possible in Japanese, were significantly greater in the intervention group (0.30 ± 0.53) than in the control group (0.03 ± 0.49, p < 0.05). All other cognitive test scores were not significantly different between the groups. In conclusion, daily consumption of flaxseed oil containing 2.2 g alpha-linolenic acid improved cognitive function, specifically verbal fluency, despite the age-related decline, in healthy individuals with no cognitive abnormalities. Further validation studies focusing on the effects of alpha-linolenic acid on verbal fluency and executive function in older adults are needed, as verbal fluency is a predictor of Alzheimer's disease development, important for cognitive health.
