Abstract
The current study offers an efficient design of novel nanoparticle microspheres (MCs) using a hydrothermal approach. The Co0.5Ni0.5GaxFe2−xO4 (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) MCs were prepared by engineering the elements, such as cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), iron (Fe), and gallium (Ga). There was a significant variation in MCs’ physical structure and surface morphology, which was evaluated using energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The anti-proliferative activity of MCs was examined by MTT assay and DAPI staining using human colorectal carcinoma cells (HCT-116), human cervical cancer cells (HeLa), and a non-cancerous cell line—human embryonic kidney cells (HEK-293). Post 72 h treatment, MCs caused a dose dependent inhibition of growth and proliferation of HCT-116 and HeLa cells. Conversely, no cytotoxic effect was observed on HEK-293 cells. The anti-fungal action was assessed by the colony forming units (CFU) technique and SEM, resulting in the survival rate of Candida albicans as 20%, with severe morphogenesis, on treatment with MCs x = 1.0. These findings suggest that newly engineered microspheres have the potential for pharmaceutical importance, in terms of infectious diseases and anti-cancer therapy.

Abstract
We report a flame retardant epoxy nanocomposite reinforced with 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenantrene-10-oxide (DOPO)-tethered SiO2 (DOPO-t-SiO2) hybrid nanoparticles (NPs). The DOPO-t-SiO2 NPs were successfully synthesized through surface treatment of SiO2 NPs with (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GPTMS), followed by a click reaction between GPTMS on SiO2 and DOPO. The epoxy nanocomposites with DOPO-t-SiO2 NPs as multifunctional additive exhibited not only high flexural strength and fracture toughness but also excellent flame retardant properties and thermal stability, compared to those of pristine epoxy and epoxy nanocomposites with a single additive of SiO2 or DOPO, respectively. Our approach allows a facile, yet effective strategy to synthesize a functional hybrid additive for developing flame retardant nanocomposites.

Abstract
For the last twenty years, polymer hybrid nanocomposites have enjoyed unflagging interest from numerous scientific groups and R&D departments, as they provide notable enhancement of properties, even at low nanofillers’ content. Their performance results from many factors, the most important of which is the uniform distribution in the entire volume of the matrix, that still is very challenging, but is the right choice of two types of nanoparticles that can lead to an increase of dispersion stability and even more uniform distribution of fillers. The incorporation of two types of nanofillers, especially when they differ in aspect ratio or chemical nature, allows to additively reduce the price of the final composite by replacing the more expensive filler with the cheaper one, or even synergistically improving the properties, e.g., mechanical, thermal, and barrier, etc., that can extend their usage in the industry. Despite numerous review papers on nanocomposites, there is no review on how the introduction of a hybrid system of nanofillers affects the properties of polyolefins, which are the most commonly used engineering plastics. This review deeply focuses on the structure–properties relationship of polyolefins-based hybrid nanocomposites, especially based on two types of polyethylenes (low-density polyethylenes (LDPE) and high-density polyethylenes (HDPE)) and polypropylene.

Abstract
In this work, a multi-functional nanoparticle (TiO₂-KH570-DOPO) has been successfully synthesized through the attachment of 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO)-methacryloxy propyl trimethoxyl silane on the surface of titanium dioxide (TiO₂). Supercritical carbon dioxide was used as the solvent in order to increase the grafting level. The chemical structure of TiO₂-KH570-DOPO was fully characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectra, thermogravimetric analysis and transmission electron microscopy. The modified TiO₂ was incorporated into flexible polyurethane foam (FPUF). The fire performance of FPUF blends was evaluated using microscale combustion calorimetry. Peak heat release rate and total heat release values were reduced from 657.0 W/g and 28.9 kJ/g for neat FPUF sample to 519.2 W/g and 26.8 kJ/g of FPUF specimen containing 10 wt % of TiO₂-KH570-DOPO. Analysis of thermal stability and the observation of char formation suggests that TiO₂-KH570-DOPO is active in the condensed phase.

Abstract
In order to improve the performance of phenolic foam, an additive compound of 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) and Itaconic acid (ITA) were attached on the backbone of ethyl cellulose (EC) and obtained DOPO-ITA modified EC (DIMEC), which was used to modify phenolic resin and composite phenolic foams (CPFs). The structures of DOPO-ITA were verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). The molecular structure and microstructure were characterized by FT-IR spectra and SEM, respectively. Compared with EC, the crystallinity of DIMEC was dramatically decreased, and the diffraction peak positions were basically unchanged. Additionally, thermal stability was decreased and Ti decreased by 24 °C. The residual carbon (600 °C) was increased by 25.7%. With the dosage of DIMEC/P increased, the Ea values of DIMEC composite phenolic resins were increased gradually. The reaction orders were all non-integers. Compared with PF, the mechanical properties, flame retardancy, and the residual carbon (800 °C) of CPFs were increased. The cell size of CPFs was less and the cell distribution was relatively regular. By comprehensive analysis, the suitable dosage of DIMEC/P was no more than 15%.

Abstract
In the present investigation, solution casting method was used for the preparation of nanocomposite (NC) films. At first, the surface of ZrO2 nanoparticles (NPs) was modified with vitamin B1 (VB1) as a bioactive coupling agent to achieve a better dispersion and compatibility of NPs within the poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) matrix. The grafting of modifier on the surface of ZrO2 was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Finally, the resulting modified ZrO2 (ZrO2–VB1), was used as a nano-filler and incorporated into the PVC matrix to improve its mechanical and thermal properties. These processes were carried out under ultrasonic irradiation conditions, which is an economical and eco-friendly method. The effect of ZrO2–VB1 on the properties and morphology of the PVC matrix was characterized by various techniques. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analyses showed a good dispersion of fillers into the PVC matrix with the average diameter of 37–40 nm. UV–Vis spectroscopy was used to study optical behavior of the obtained NC films. TGA analysis has confirmed the presence of about 7 wt% VB1 on the surface of ZrO2. Also, the data indicated that the thermal and mechanical properties of the NC films were enhanced.

Abstract
Hydrophylic fumed silica AR974 was tested as a potential nanofiller for the production of composite isotactic polypropylene filaments/fibers (containing 0.25–2 vol % of nanoparticles) via melt compounding and subsequent hot drawing. The objectives of this study were as follows: (i) to investigate the effects of the composition and the processing conditions on the microstructure and the thermal and mechanical properties of the produced fibers; (ii) to separate the effects of silica addition from those produced by fiber drawing; and (iii) to interpret the changes in the matrix molecular mobility (produced by silica and/or drawing). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) evidenced a good dispersion of nanoparticles at fractions up to 0.5 vol % of the nanofiller. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses revealed the increase in crystallinity after drawing of both neat polypropylene (PP) and produced nanocomposite fibers. Consequently, tensile modulus and stress at break of the fibers were enhanced. Drawn fibers containing 0.25–0.5 vol % of nanofiller showed also a remarkable increase in the creep resistance. Loss modulus of drawn fibers showed a pronounced α-relaxation peak at about 65 °C; the higher the draw ratio, the higher the peak intensity. Thermal and mechanical properties of composite fibers were improved due to the combined effects of nanofiller reinforcement and fiber orientation produced during hot drawing. Both fumed silica and draw ratio were significantly effective on tensile modulus and tenacity of nanocomposite fibers up to 0.5 vol % of AR974.

Abstract
Abstract
Colloidal dispersions of hybrid nanoparticles with silica sol as the supporter (PKSol) were prepared by supporting aromatic phosphate on silica sol via a chemical action with γ-aminopropyltrimethylsilane (KH550) as a linker in wet process for the first time. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) demonstrated that hybrid nanoparticles with an average size of about 200 nm were formed and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the presence of the ultrafine silica sols within the hybrid particles, which exhibited “currant-bun” particle morphologies, rather than typical “core-shell” structures for most polymer-encapsulated silica particles. Compared to aromatic phosphate alone and silane-modified silica sol, the effect of PKSol on the crystallization behavior and mechanical properties of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was investigated using a polarized optical microscope (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results demonstrated that PKSol showed superior nucleating ability on iPP than the other two. After adding 0.2 wt% PKSol, the crystallization peak temperature of iPP increased from 116.35°C to 120.81°C and the crystallinity increased from 39.6% to 50%. Correspondingly, the haze decreased from 37.6% to 23.3% and mechanical properties were improved.

Abstract
Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC)/nano-SiO2 composite fibers were processed from solutions in 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AMIMCl) by the method of dry-jet wet spinning. The oscillatory shear measurements demonstrated that the gel network formed above 10 wt% nano-SiO2 and the complex viscosity increased with increasing nano-SiO2. Remarkably, the shear viscosity of the nanofluids was even lower than solutions without nano-SiO2 under high shear rates. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed that well-dispersed particles exhibit strong interfacial interactions with cellulose matrix. Measurements on wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) indicated that the regenerated cellulose and nanocomposite fibers were the typical cellulose II crystalline form, which was different from the native cellulose with the polymorph of Type I. The tensile strength of the nanocomposite fibers was larger than that of pure cellulose fiber and showed a tendency to increase and then decrease with increasing nano-SiO2. Furthermore, the nanocomposite fibers exhibited improved thermal stability.
