Advances in bioelectrochemical systems for bio-products recovery

Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) have emerged as a sustainable and highly promising technology that has garnered significant attention from researchers worldwide. These systems provide an efficient platform for the removal and recovery of valuable products from wastewater, with minimal or no net energy loss. Among the various types of BES, microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a notable example, utilizing microbial biocatalytic activities to generate electrical energy through the degradation of organic matter. Other BES variants include microbial desalination cells (MDCs), microbial electrolysis cells (MECs), microbial electrosynthesis cells (MXCs), microbial solar cells (MSCs), and more. BESs have demonstrated remarkable potential in the recovery of diverse products such as hydrogen, methane, volatile fatty acids, precious nutrients, and metals. Recent advancements in scaling up BESs have facilitated a more realistic assessment of their net energy recovery and resource yield in real-world applications. This comprehensive review focuses on the practical applications of BESs, from laboratory-scale developments to their potential for industrial commercialization. Specifically, it highlights successful examples of value-added product recovery achieved through various BES configurations. Additionally, this review critically evaluates the limitations of BESs and provides suggestions to enhance their performance at a larger scale, enabling effective implementation in real-world scenarios. By providing a thorough analysis of the current state of BES technology, this review aims to emphasize the tremendous potential of these systems for sustainable wastewater treatment and resource recovery. It underscores the significance of bridging the gap between laboratory-scale achievements and industrial implementation, paving the way for a more sustainable and resource-efficient future.

Adapted feeding strategies in fed-batch fermentation improve sugar delivery and ethanol productivity

Bioethanol is a renewable fuel widely used in road transportation and is generally regarded as a clean energy source. Although fermentation is one of the major processes in bioethanol production, studies on improving its efficiency through operational design are limited, especially compared to other steps (pretreatment and hydrolysis/saccharification). In this study, two adapted feeding strategies, in which feed medium addition (sugar delivery) was adjusted to increase the supply of fermentable sugar, were developed to improve ethanol productivity in 5-L fed-batch fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Specifically, a linear adapted feeding strategy was established based on changes in cell biomass, and an exponential adapted feeding strategy was developed based on cell biomass accumulation. By implementing these two feeding strategies, the overall ethanol productivity reached 0.88± 0.04 and 0.87± 0.06 g/L/h, respectively. This corresponded to ~20% increases in ethanol productivity compared to fixed pulsed feeding operations. Additionally, there was no residual glucose at the end of fermentation, and final ethanol content reached 95± 3 g/L under the linear adapted operation and 104± 3 g/L under the exponential adapted feeding strategy. No statistical difference was observed in the overall ethanol yield (ethanol-to-sugar ratio) between fixed and adapted feeding strategies (~91%). These results demonstrate that sugar delivery controlled by adapted feeding strategies was more efficient than fixed feeding operations, leading to higher ethanol productivity. Overall, this study provides novel adapted feeding strategies to improve sugar delivery and ethanol productivity. Integration into the current practices of the ethanol industry could improve productivity and reduce production costs of fermentation processes.

Application of Pichia kudriavzevii NBRC1279 and NBRC1664 to Simultaneous Saccharification and Fermentation for Bioethanol Production

Simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) is capable of performing enzymatic saccharification and fermentation for biofuel production in a single vessel. Thus, SSF has several advantages such as simplifying the manufacturing process, operating easily, and reducing energy input. Here, we describe the application of Pichia kudriavzevii NBRC1279 and NBRC1664 to SSF for bioethanol production. When each strain was incubated for 144 h at 35 °C with Japanese cedar particles, the highest ethanol concentrations were reached 21.9 ± 0.50 g/L and 23.8 ± 3.9 g/L, respectively. In addition, 21.6 ± 0.29 g/L and 21.3 ± 0.21 g/L of bioethanol were produced from Japanese eucalyptus particles when each strain was incubated for 144 h at 30 °C. Although previous methods require pretreatment of the source material, our method does not require pretreatment, which is an advantage for industrial use. To elucidate the different characteristics of the strains, we performed genome sequencing and genome comparison. Based on the results of the eggNOG categories and the resulting Venn diagram, the functional abilities of both strains were similar. However, strain NBRC1279 showed five retrotransposon protein genes in the draft genome sequence, which indicated that the stress tolerance of both strains is slightly different.

Phytoremediation of Heavy Metals in Tropical Soils an Overview

The geomorphological characteristics of the materials inherent in tropical soils, in addition to the excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides, industrial waste and residues, and novel pollutants derived from emerging new technologies such as nanomaterials, affect the functionality and resilience of the soil-microorganism-plant ecosystem; impacting phytoremediation processes and increasing the risk of heavy metal transfer into the food chain. The aim of this review is to provide a general overview of phytoremediation in tropical soils, placing special emphasis on the factors that affect this process, such as nanoagrochemicals, and highlighting the value of biodiversity among plant species that have the potential to grow and develop in soils impacted by heavy metals, as a useful resource upon which to base further research.

Chemical composition, pretreatments and saccharification of Senna siamea (Lam.) H.S. Irwin & Barneby: An efficient biomass producing tree legume

Protocols were developed for efficient release of glucose from the biomass of Senna siamea, one of the highly efficient biomass producing tree legumes. Composition of mature, 1year and 2years coppice biomass were analysed. For the hydrolysis of the glucan, two pretreatments, cellulose solvent- and organic solvent-based lignocellulose fractionation (COSLIF) and alkali (sodium hydroxide) were used; COSLIF (85% phosphoric acid, 45min incubation at 50°C) pretreated mature biomass exhibited best result in which 88.90% glucose released after 72h of incubation with the use of 5 filter paper units (FPU) of cellulase and 10 international units (IU) of β-glucosidase per gram of glucan. Of the biomass of different particle sizes (40-200mesh) used for saccharification, 40-60mesh shown the maximum glucose release. COSLIF pretreated mature, 1year and 2years coppice biomass showed equivalent glucose release profiles.
