Abstract
Overall colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence and mortality have been decreasing for several decades; however, since the early 1990s CRC incidence rates have nearly doubled among adults aged under 50 years. This study pilot-tested a community-based mass-media campaign aimed at improving knowledge and awareness of early-onset CRC in this population. The campaign (#CRCandMe) was deployed from June to September 2023 in Utah and Wisconsin. To evaluate its success (reach) and inform future campaigns, key performance indicators were defined (e.g., impressions, website traffic). To evaluate change in knowledge in the target population, the knowledge and awareness of participants recruited via consumer panels was assessed at baseline (n=235) and follow-up (n=161). The number of correct answers for each of seven knowledge items was calculated at baseline (pre-intervention) and follow-up (post-intervention). McNemar's test was employed to assess significant differences in the seven knowledge items between the two timepoints. The campaign delivered over 26.7 million impressions and nearly 43,000 clicks. A 15-second video ad received 221,985 plays, with 57,270 users watching to completion. Pre-survey results revealed that while 74% of participants were able to correctly identify CRC signs, only 18% could identify risk factors. Knowledge scores slightly improved from baseline to follow-up, with statistically significance for the question related to CRC signs (P=0.0004). This study demonstrated wide reach and may inform future larger-scale interventions and public health initiatives aimed at reducing CRC incidence and improving health outcomes for at-risk adults aged under 50 years.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The internet is a primary source of health information for patients, supplementing physician care. Google Trends (GT), a popular tool, allows the exploration of public interest in health-related phenomena. Despite the growing volume of GT studies, none have focused explicitly on oncology, creating a need for a systematic review to bridge this gap. OBJECTIVE We aimed to systematically characterize studies related to oncology using GT to describe its utilities and biases. METHODS We included all studies that used GT to analyze Google searches related to malignancies. We excluded studies written in languages other than English. The search was performed using the PubMed engine on August 1, 2022. We used the following search input: "Google trends" AND ("oncology" OR "cancer" or "malignancy" OR "tumor" OR "lymphoma" OR "multiple myeloma" OR "leukemia"). We analyzed sources of bias that included using search terms instead of topics, lack of confrontation of GT statistics with real-world data, and absence of sensitivity analysis. We performed descriptive statistics. RESULTS A total of 85 articles were included. The first study using GT for oncology research was published in 2013, and since then, the number of publications has increased annually. The studies were categorized as follows: 22% (19/85) were related to prophylaxis, 20% (17/85) pertained to awareness events, 11% (9/85) were celebrity-related, 13% (11/85) were related to COVID-19, and 47% (40/85) fell into other categories. The most frequently analyzed cancers were breast (n=28), prostate (n=26), lung (n=18), and colorectal cancers (n=18). We discovered that of the 85 studies, 17 (20%) acknowledged using GT topics instead of search terms, 79 (93%) disclosed all search input details necessary for replicating their results, and 34 (40%) compared GT statistics with real-world data. The most prevalent methods for analyzing the GT data were correlation analysis (55/85, 65%) and peak analysis (43/85, 51%). The authors of only 11% (9/85) of the studies performed a sensitivity analysis. CONCLUSIONS The number of studies related to oncology using GT data has increased annually. The studies included in this systematic review demonstrate a variety of concerning topics, search strategies, and statistical methodologies. The most frequently analyzed cancers were breast, prostate, lung, colorectal, skin, and cervical cancers, potentially reflecting their prevalence in the population or public interest. Although most researchers provided reproducible search inputs, only one-fifth used GT topics instead of search terms, and many studies lacked a sensitivity analysis. Scientists using GT for medical research should ensure the quality of studies by providing a transparent search strategy to reproduce results, preferring to use topics over search terms, and performing robust statistical calculations coupled with sensitivity analysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Resources such as Google Trends and Reddit provide opportunities to gauge real-time popular interest in public health issues. Despite the potential for these publicly available and free resources to help optimize public health campaigns, utilization for this purpose has been limited. OBJECTIVE To determine whether early public awareness of COVID-19 correlated with elevated public interest in other infectious diseases of public health importance. METHODS Google Trends search data and Reddit comment data were analyzed from 2018 through 2020 for the frequency of keywords "Chikungunya", "Ebola", "H1N1", "MERS", "SARS", and "Zika", six highly publicized epidemic diseases in recent decades. After collecting Google Trends relative popularity scores for each of these six terms, unpaired T-tests were used to compare the 2020 weekly scores for each term to its average level over the 3-year study period. The number of Reddit comments per month with each of these six terms was collected and then adjusted for total estimated Reddit monthly comment volume to derive a measure of relative usage, analogous to the Google Trends popularity score. The relative monthly incidence of comments with each search term was then compared to the corresponding search term's pre-COVID monthly comment data, again using unpaired T-tests. P-value cutoffs for statistical significance were determined a priori with a Bonferroni correction. RESULTS Google Trends and Reddit data both demonstrate large and statistically significant increases in the usage of each evaluated disease term through at least the initial months of the pandemic. Google searches and Reddit comments that included any of the evaluated infectious disease search terms rose significantly in the first months of 2020 above their baseline usage, all peaking in March 2020. Google searches for "SARS" and "MERS" remained elevated for the entirety of the 2020 calendar year, as did Reddit comments with the words "Ebola", "H1N1", "MERS" and "SARS" (P<.001, for each weekly or monthly comparison, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Google Trends and Reddit can readily be used to evaluate real-time general interest levels in public health related topics, providing a tool to better time and direct public health initiatives that require a receptive target audience. The start of the COVID-19 pandemic correlated with increased public interest in other epidemic infectious diseases. We have demonstrated that for six distinct infectious causes of epidemics over the last two decades, public interest rose substantially and rapidly with the outbreak of COVID-19. Our data suggests that for at least several months after the initial outbreak, the public may have been particularly receptive to dialogue on these topics. Public health officials should consider utilizing Google Trends and social media data to identify to patterns of engagement with public health topics in real-time, and to optimize timing of public health campaigns. Abstract
OBJECTIVES This field study evaluated a multiwave media campaign that aired in 2019 to promote participation in the Australian National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP), which provides free biennial mailed-out immunochemical faecal occult blood test (iFOBT) kits to Australians aged 50-74 years. DESIGN Adjusted negative binomial regression models determined rate ratios of iFOBT kits returned during and following three campaign waves compared with 2018 (baseline). Interaction terms determined whether effects differed by gender×age group, socioeconomic status (SES) and previous participation. SETTING Australia. PARTICIPANTS All Australians eligible for the NBCSP (men and women aged 50-74 years) who returned an iFOBT kit between 1 January 2018 and 30 October 2019. INTERVENTIONS A multiwave national integrated media campaign to promote participation in the NBCSP. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES iFOBT kit return rate and number of iFOBT kits returned during and immediately following campaign activity overall and within historically lower screening groups (men, 50-59 years old; lower SES; never participants). RESULTS The rate of iFOBT kits returned increased significantly during all three campaign waves, with evidence of carry-over effects of the second wave coinciding with a general practitioner mail-out strategy (all p<0.001). At each wave, effects were observed among men and women in the younger (50-59 years old) age group, but were less consistent for the older age group. Each SES group and both never and previous participants had increased return rates at each wave, but increases were stronger among mid-higher SES and those who had never participated. An estimated 93 075 extra iFOBT kits were returned due to the campaign. CONCLUSIONS The campaign increased participation, especially among those who were younger and never previously screened-key groups to recruit given reparticipation rates of over 80%. Ongoing investment in national integrated media campaigns of sufficient duration and intensity can increase bowel cancer screening and ultimately save lives.

Abstract
Background The aim of this research was to characterise the interest on the most frequent cancers in Peru through Google Trends, its geographic and temporal relationship with massive awareness campaigns. Methods A temporal trends analysis for the last 5 years was carried out, comparing the Relative Search Volume (RSV) with the dates of mass cancer awareness campaigns in Peru. Google Trends application was used to evaluate the interest in the topics: breast, prostate, cervical stomach and colorectal cancer between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2020, expressed in RSV. The annual RSV for each neoplasm was compared, as well as its annual variation using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The correlation between the RSV and the estimated incidence for each province was measured using the Spearman test. Results The topics with the highest RSV were breast (median: 20, range: 6-100) and prostate cancer (median: 28, range: 9-48). The topic 'breast cancer' showed a cyclical punctual increase in October, its awareness month. Searches for cervical, stomach and colorectal cancer were smaller and did not show peaks of interest. It was observed that the RSV was variable when compared with previous years (p < 0.05 for all the evaluated topics). Geographically, different provincial configurations of interest were observed according to neoplasia. When correlating the RSV with the incidence by province, a non-significant positive correlation (p > 0.05) was found for breast, cervical and colorectal cancer. Conclusions This study suggests a positive temporal correlation between RSV and awareness cancer campaigns in Peru specially to breast cancer and, to a lesser extent, prostate cancer. Significant variations of interest were demonstrated for each neoplasm among the evaluated years. No significant correlation was found between the incidence rate and the average RSV among Peruvian provinces.

Abstract
Introduction: The utilization and public awareness of brachytherapy are both declining. Social media has an increasing presence in health promotions. As regards cancer care, social media has been successfully used as a platform for information dissemination, psychosocial support, and patient engagement and empowerment. Methods and materials: Using Google Trends (Google LLC, Mountain View, CA, USA), we analyzed the impacts on the public interest of three brachytherapy-related social media campaigns/publicity events and compared and contrasted them with three other campaigns/publicity events. We used descriptive statistics (mean ± standard deviation (SD)) to describe the search results, independent t-tests to compare means before and after campaigns/announcements for short-term effects, and one-way ANOVA (or Kruskal-Wallis test when appropriate) to compare mean values across distinct time periods for long-term effects. Results: We identified three major types of social media campaigns/events: those that have a short-term impact but little long-term impact, those that have both short-term and long-term impacts, and those with little short-term or long-term impact. We examined campaigns with significant and lasting impacts and noticed that they tend to be celebrity-related/celebrity-endorsed, focused on sharing personal experiences, and occur with regular frequency. Conclusions: To increase public awareness of brachytherapy, the American Brachytherapy Society (ABS) can consider tie-ins with events and people with high search traffic (such as Breast Cancer Awareness Month), having celebrities/influencers who were treated with brachytherapy to provide testimonials, encouraging patient engagement and sharing of their experiences with brachytherapy on social media, and setting up recurring brachytherapy publicity events.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Health campaigns have the potential to improve public awareness, but their impact can be difficult to assess. Internet search data provide information concerning online health information-seeking behaviour in the population and may serve as a proxy for public awareness to evaluate health campaigns. This study aimed to measure the impact of World Stroke Day (WSD) in China using Baidu search data. METHODS Daily search index values (SIV) for the term 'stroke' were collected from January 2011 to December 2019 using the Baidu Index platform. We examined the mean difference in SIV between the 4 weeks surrounding WSD (period of interest) and the rest of the year (control period) for each year by t-test analysis. The mean difference between the period of interest and the control period was also calculated. The joinpoint regression model was used to analyse the trends of internet search activity 30 days before and after WSD for each year (2011-2019). Finally, the top and rising queries related to stroke during the week of the campaign in 2020 were summarised. RESULTS A significant mean increase in SIV of 418.5 (95% CI: 298.8 to 538.2) for the period of interest surrounding WSD was observed, 36.2% greater than the SIV during the control period (2011-2019). Short-term joinpoint analysis showed a significant increase in SIV 3 days before WSD, a peak on WSD and a decrease to the precampaign level 3 days after WSD. The rising related queries suggested that the public had increasing concerns about stroke warning signs, stroke prevention and stroke recovery during the campaign. CONCLUSIONS The WSD campaign increased internet search activity. These research techniques can be applied to evaluation of other health campaigns. Advancing understanding of public demand will enable tailoring of the campaign and strengthen health management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM A better understanding of seasonal variations in cancer diagnosis may be the first step toward optimal resource distribution in the National Cancer Screening Program (NCSP). This study aimed to identify seasonal variations in the diagnosis of the top 10 major cancers in Korea. METHODS We conducted a retrospective, observational cohort study in participants aged ≥ 20 years between 2012 and 2016 from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment-National Patient Sample database, previously converted to a common data model. We assessed the overall seasonal variations in the 10 major cancers. RESULTS We analyzed the following top 10 cancers: stomach (n = 3435), colorectal (n = 5368), liver (n = 7605), pancreatic (n = 2946), gallbladder (n = 899), lung (n = 1598), prostate (n = 2897), thyroid (n = 1966), breast (n = 1313), and kidney (n = 668) cancers. All cancers showed similar seasonal variations in diagnosis, with a significant winter peak. A winter peak in diagnosis was observed for NCSP-covered cancers, such as stomach, colon, liver, and breast cancers, as well as other cancers not covered by the NCSP. The winter peak for cancer diagnosis was the highest for breast cancer (74.4%) followed by thyroid (51.0%) and stomach cancers, whereas it was the lowest for pancreatic cancer followed by prostate and colorectal cancers. CONCLUSIONS Significant seasonal variations were found in the diagnosis of the top 10 major cancers, with a winter peak, which may be explained by the participants' behavior pattern with respect to the NCSP. Our findings suggest that trading off of NCSP healthcare resources between winter and other seasons may be beneficial.

Abstract
Background Participation in Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening programs is low in Saudi Arabia. Public awareness of CRC and knowledge of available screening tools are crucial for improving screening uptake. This study aimed to examine the level of awareness and knowledge of CRC among the Saudi population. Materials and methods A survey-based study was conducted on 1912 residents of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The survey comprised 20 questions; these concerned the definition of the colon and rectum; the function of the colon; the incidence, risk factors, symptoms, screening methods, prevention methods, and treatment methods for CRC; and the value of early detection of CRC. Results Of the 1912 participants who completed the survey, only 51.7% knew that the colon was the large intestine, while 57% knew that the rectum was the end of the large intestine. Colonoscopy was the preferred screening tool (72.8%). Most respondents believed early detection of CRC through colonoscopy is associated with high survival rates. However, 65.7% of the participants reported that they would not like to undergo a CRC screening. Higher education level was also associated with knowledge that CRC can develop asymptomatically, with postgraduates most likely to know this (P = 0.032). Conclusions There is a lack of knowledge regarding CRC among certain demographic groups in Saudi Arabia, and education and screening programs should target populations with the most limited knowledge.

Abstract
Although colorectal cancer (CRC) screening is highly effective, screening rates lag far below recommended levels, particularly for low-income people. The Colorectal Cancer Control Program (CRCCP) funded $100 million in competitively awarded grants to 25 states from 2009-2015 to increase CRC screening rates among low-income, uninsured populations, in part by directly providing and paying for screening services. Using data from the 2001-2015 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and a difference-in-differences strategy, we find no effects of CRCCP on the use of relatively cheap fecal occult blood tests (FOBT). We do, however, find that the CRCCP significantly increased the likelihood that uninsured 50-64-year-olds report ever having a relatively expensive endoscopic CRC screening (sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy) by 2.9 percentage points, or 10.7%. These effects are larger for women, minorities, and individuals who did not undertake other types of preventive care. We do not find that the CRCCP led to significant changes in CRC cancer detection. Our results indicate that the CRCCP was effective at increasing CRC screening rates among the most vulnerable.

Abstract
The development of science and technology has deepened people's understanding of cancer, changing the management of malignant tumors in the medical field. Given the common precancerous characteristics of colorectal cancer (CRC), researchers studied early CRC screening. The complexity of traditional diagnostics forced medical staff to speed up CRC innovation early screening methods. Here, we prepared nano-colloidal gold raw materials with different particle sizes (15 and 30 nm) and observed the morphological characteristics and properties of the materials. Simultaneously, the nanocolloidal gold double antibody sandwich kit was designed through the optimum pH value and protein content screening experiment. The results of clinical enteroscopy confirmed the important guiding significance of the equipment in early CRC screening.

Abstract
Background Compared with White Americans, Black Americans have higher colon cancer mortality rates but lower up-to-date screening rates. Chadwick Boseman was a prominent Black American actor who died of colon cancer on August 28, 2020. As announcements of celebrity diagnoses often result in increased awareness, Boseman’s death may have resulted in greater interest in colon cancer on the internet, particularly among Black Americans. Objective This study aims to quantify the impact of Chadwick Boseman’s death on web-based search interest in colon cancer and determine whether there was an increase in interest in regions of the United States with a greater proportion of Black Americans. Methods We conducted an infoveillance study using Google Trends (GT) and Wikipedia pageview analysis. Using an autoregressive integrated moving average algorithm, we forecasted the weekly relative search volume (RSV) for GT search topics and terms related to colon cancer that would have been expected had his death not occurred and compared it with observed RSV data. This analysis was also conducted for the number of page views on the Wikipedia page for colorectal cancer. We then delineated GT RSV data for the term colon cancer for states and metropolitan areas in the United States and determined how the RSV values for these regions correlated with the percentage of Black Americans in that region. Differences in these correlations before and after Boseman’s death were compared to determine whether there was a shift in the racial demographics of the individuals conducting the searches. Results The observed RSVs for the topics colorectal cancer and colon cancer screening increased by 598% and 707%, respectively, and were on average 121% (95% CI 72%-193%) and 256% (95% CI 35%-814%) greater than expected during the first 3 months following Boseman’s death. Daily Wikipedia page view volume during the 2 months following Boseman’s death was on average 1979% (95% CI 1375%-2894%) greater than expected, and it was estimated that this represented 547,354 (95% CI 497,708-585,167) excess Wikipedia page views. Before Boseman’s death, there were negative correlations between the percentage of Black Americans living in a state or metropolitan area and the RSV for colon cancer in that area (r=−0.18 and r=−0.05, respectively). However, in the 2 weeks following his death, there were positive correlations between the RSV for colon cancer and the percentage of Black Americans per state and per metropolitan area (r=0.73 and r=0.33, respectively). These changes persisted for 4 months and were all statistically significant (P<.001). Conclusions There was a significant increase in web-based activity related to colon cancer following Chadwick Boseman’s death, particularly in areas with a higher proportion of Black Americans. This reflects a heightened public awareness that can be leveraged to further educate the public.

Abstract
Background Reports have suggested decreasing attention to CVD comorbidities during the COVID-19 pandemic, despite their association with worse virus-related outcomes. Using nowcasting tools, we sought to explore temporal trends in public interest by studying use of online search terms related to CVD comorbidities during the pandemic time period. Methods We queried Google Trends for recent (October 2019–October 2020) and seasonal (October 2016–October 2020) trends of search terms pertaining to cardiovascular-related behaviors or clinical care including clinical diagnostic and therapeutic-related terms. Additionally, we acquired data from Google Shopping Insights to explore consumer behavior. Data for search results in the US were compared using mean relative search volumes (RSV), tabulated by month. Results Online search interest in the terms “Exercise” and “Cigarettes” changed by +18.0% and −52.5%, respectively, comparing March–April with January–February 2020. Key terms related to CVD-related care, including diagnostic and therapeutic-related terms such as “Statin”, “Lipid profile”, “Low-density lipoprotein”, and “Hemoglobin A1C” declined to a four-year low in late March 2020 but regained pre-pandemic search query frequency by July 2020. Results were supported by Google Shopping analysis; for example, online consumer shopping-related searches for tobacco products reached at an all-year low after May 2020. Conclusion We report an increase in search interest for an overall healthier CVD-related lifestyle starting in March 2020, supported by online consumer shopping behavior. However, a months-long trough in public interest for CVD care-related search terms from March–May 2020 suggests a transient but substantial decrease in public focus on cardiovascular-related healthcare engagement. Future research is needed to understand if these mixed signals will persist into 2021 and how they potentially translate into real-world CVD-related event rates.

Abstract
PURPOSE Colonoscopy is a gold standard for screening and diagnosis of colorectal cancer (CRC). The data from the search engine may reveal what information on coloscopy gains the attention of Internet users. We aimed to investigate Google searches trends and terms related to colonoscopy. PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrieved statistics searches related to colonoscopy using Google Trends (GT) and Google Ads (GA) for the period from April 2016 to March 2020. The GT data was used for the analysis of time and regional search patterns worldwide. GA data for Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand (NZ), Poland, the United Kingdom (UK), and the United States (US) were used to calculate the search volume of categories of queries related to colonoscopy. RESULTS Globally, the relative search volume on colonoscopy has increased until the COVID-19 outbreak and revealed seasonal variation: the highest interest was observed in March (CRC awareness month), and the lowest during December (Christmas holidays). The highest number of searches per 1000 Google users-years was done in Poland (59.62) and the lowest in the UK (19.46). Most commonly, Google users searched for details on colonoscopy techniques (Australia, Canada, Ireland, NZ), anesthesia during the procedure (Poland), facility performing colonoscopy (UK, US). In all seven countries, less than 2% of queries concerned with bowel preparation before the procedure. CONCLUSION Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the interest in colonoscopy has increased among Google users. Google users may underestimate the importance of proper bowel preparation.

Abstract
Hintergrund Männer in Deutschland sterben früher als Frauen und nehmen weniger häufig Krebsvorsorgeuntersuchungen wahr. Fragestellung Ziel war die prospektive Evaluation einer „Movember-Gesundheitsinitiative“ am Universitätsklinikum Frankfurt (UKF) im November 2019. Methoden Im Rahmen der „Movember-Gesundheitsinitiative“ wurde allen männlichen Mitarbeitern des UKF ab dem 45. Lebensjahr und bei erstgradiger familiärer Vorbelastung eines Prostatakarzinoms ab dem 40. Lebensjahr im November 2019 gemäß S3-Leitlinien der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Urologie (DGU) eine Prostatakarzinom-Vorsorgeuntersuchung angeboten. Ergebnisse Insgesamt nahmen 14,4 % der Mitarbeiter teil. Eine familiäre Vorbelastung gaben insgesamt 14,0 % Teilnehmer an. Das mediane Alter betrug 54 Jahre. Der mediane PSA(prostataspezifisches Antigen)-Wert lag bei 0,9 ng/ml, der mediane PSA-Quotient bei 30 %. Bei 5 % (n = 6) zeigte sich ein suspekter Tastbefund in der DRU (digital-rektale Untersuchung). Nach Altersstratifizierung (≤ 50 vs. > 50 Lebensjahre) zeigten sich signifikante Unterschiede im medianen PSA-Wert (0,7 ng/ml vs. 1,0 ng/ml, p < 0,01) und der bereits zuvor durchgeführten urologischen Vorsorge (12,1 vs. 42,0 %, p < 0,01). Vier Teilnehmer (3,3 %) zeigten erhöhte Gesamt-PSA-Werte. Bei 32,2 % der Teilnehmer zeigte sich mindestens ein kontrollbedürftiger Befund. Insgesamt wurden 6 Prostatabiopsien durchgeführt. Hierbei zeigte sich in einem Fall ein intermediate-risk Prostatakarzinom (Gleason 3 + 4, pT3a, pPn1, pNx, R0). Schlussfolgerungung Im Rahmen der UKF-Movember-Gesundheitsinitiative 2019 konnten durch ein Vorsorgeangebot 121 Männer für eine Prostatakrebs-Vorsorge inklusive PSA-Testung gewonnen werden. Auffällige/kontrollbedürftige Befunde zeigten sich bei 32,2 %. Bei einem Mitarbeiter wurde ein therapiebedürftiges Prostatakarzinom entdeckt und therapiert.
