Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the contribution of the active job openings-to-applicants ratio, a macroeconomic indicator, to the number of ambulance dispatches. DESIGN Longitudinal ecological study. SETTING Japan, between January 2003 and December 2021. PARTICIPANTS All ambulance dispatches. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES The contribution of the active job openings-to-applicants ratio in a month, adjusted by the number of older people, mean temperature and total population, to the number of ambulance dispatches in that specific month was examined and the primary model was compared to the conventional model considering only the older population, mean temperature, and total population. RESULTS There were 108 724 969 ambulance dispatches during this period. The active job openings-to-applicants ratio was significantly associated with the number of ambulance dispatches (the increase rate of monthly ambulance dispatches for 1% rise in the active job openings-to-applicants ratio, 1.00082; 95% CI 1.00052 to 1.00112). Additionally, the primary model effectively demonstrated better fitness to the actual trend than the conventional model (the quasi-likelihood under the independence model criteria were -2 626 817 720 and -2 626 775 185, respectively). CONCLUSIONS The number of ambulance dispatches was correlated with the active job openings-to-applicants ratio. Macroeconomic perspectives may be needed to address the issue of increasing ambulance dispatches.

Abstract
We collected meteorological and urolithiasis-related hospitalization data from four counties in Ganzhou City for 2018-2019 and used the DLNM method to assess the lagged and cumulative effects of temperature on urolithiasis hospitalizations and obtain the total effect after meta-combination. Based on the nonlinear association between temperature and urolithiasis hospitalizations, the relative risk of overall high temperature (30℃) was 2.10 (95% CI: 1.07-4.10). No statistically significant difference (p = 0.07) was observed between males (RR = 2.04, 95% CI: 1.42-2.94) and females (RR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.09-1.92) for the heat effect, which was higher in the ≥ 60 years age group (RR = 3.18, 95% CI: 1.76-5.76) than in the < 60 years age group (p = 0.007). High temperatures increased the risk of hospitalization for urolithiasis in Ganzhou, China, and the risk was greatest for individuals aged 60 and above, with similar risks observed across counties and genders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Climate change has raised scientific interest in examining the associations of weather conditions with adverse health effects, while most studies determined human thermal stress using ambient air temperature rather than the thermophysiological index. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the association between emergency ambulance dispatches (EADs) related to cardiovascular causes and heat/cold stress in Shenzhen, a city in southern China, with the aim of providing new insights for local policymakers. METHODS A time series analysis using ambulance dispatch data of cardiovascular diseases in Shenzhen, China (2013-2019) was conducted. A quasi-Poisson nonlinear distributed lag model was applied to explore the relationship between emergency ambulance dispatches (EADs) due to cardiovascular causes and thermal stress (determined by Universal Thermal Climate Index, UTCI). Attributable fractions were estimated to identify which UTCI ranges have a greater health impact. RESULTS The relationship between UTCI and EADs due to cardiovascular diseases exhibits a reverse J-shaped curve. The effects of cold stress were immediate and long-lasting, whereas the effects of heat stress were non-significant. Compared with the optimal equivalent temperature (71st percentile of UTCI, 29.22 °C), the relative risks for cumulative (0-21 days) exposures to cold stress (1st percentile, - 0.13 °C; 5th percentile, 7.68 °C) were 1.55 (95%CI:1.28,1.88) and 1.44 (95%CI:1.22,1.69), respectively. Thermal (cold and heat) stress was responsible for 10.81% (95%eCI: 5.67%,15.43%) of EADs for cardiovascular diseases, with 9.46% (95%eCI: 3.98%,14.40%) attributed to moderate cold stress (2.5th ~ 71st percentile). Greater susceptibility to cold stress was observed for males and the elderly. Heat stress showed harmful effects in the warm season. CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrated that cold exposure elevates the risk of EADs for cardiovascular causes in Shenzhen, and moderate cold stress cause the highest burden of ambulance dispatches. Health authorities should consider effective adaptation strategies and interventions responding to cold stress to reduce the morbidity of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Introduction The precise associations between temperature-related indices and mental and behavioral disorders (MBDs) have yet to be fully elucidated. Our study aims to ascertain the most effective temperature-related index and assess its immediate impact on emergency ambulance dispatches (EADs) due to MBDs in Shenzhen, China. Methods EADs data and meteorological data from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2020, in Shenzhen were collected. Distributed lag non-linear models (DLNMs) were utilized to examine the non-linear and lagged effects of temperature-related indices on EADs due to MBDs. The Quasi Akaike Information criterion (QAIC) was used to determine the optimal index after standardizing temperature-related indices. After adjusting for confounding factors in the model, we estimated the immediate and cumulative effects of temperature on EADs due to MBDs. Results The analysis of short-term temperature effects on EADs due to MBDs revealed Humidex as the most suitable index. Referring to the optimal Humidex (3.2th percentile, 12.00°C), we observed a significant effect of Humidex over the threshold (34.6th percentile, 26.80°C) on EADs due to MBDs at lag 0-5. The cumulative relative risks for high temperature (90th percentile, 41.90°C) and extreme high temperature (99th percentile, 44.20°C) at lag 0-5 were 1.318 (95% CI: 1.159-1.499) and 1.338 (95% CI: 1.153-1.553), respectively. No significant cold effect was observed on EADs due to MBDs. Conclusion High Humidex was associated with more EADs due to MBDs in subtropical regions. Health authorities should implement effective measures to raise public awareness of risks related to high temperature and protect vulnerable populations.

Abstract
The need to assess and measure how social vulnerability influences the health impacts of climate change has resulted in a rapidly growing body of research literature. To date, there has been no overarching, systematic examination of where this evidence is concentrated and what inferences can be made. This scoping review provides an overview of studies published between 2012 and 2022 on social vulnerability to the negative health effects of climate change. Of the 2115 studies identified from four bibliographic databases (Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and CAB Direct), 230 that considered indicators of social vulnerability to climate change impacts on health outcomes were selected for review. Frequency and thematic analyses were conducted to establish the scope of the social vulnerability indicators, climate change impacts, and health conditions studied, and the substantive themes and findings of this research. 113 indicators of social vulnerability covering 15 themes were identified, with a small set of indicators receiving most of the research attention, including age, sex, ethnicity, education, income, poverty, unemployment, access to green and blue spaces, access to health services, social isolation, and population density. The results reveal an undertheorisation and few indicators that conceptualise and operationalise social vulnerability beyond individual sociodemographic characteristics by identifying structural and institutional dimensions of vulnerability, and a preponderance of social vulnerability research in high-income countries. This Review highlights the need for future research, data infrastructure, and policy attention to address structural, institutional, and sociopolitical conditions, which will better support climate resilience and adaptation planning.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heat waves significantly impact ecosystems and human health, especially that of vulnerable populations, and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Besides being directly related to climate-sensitive health outcomes, heat waves have indirectly increased the burden on our health care systems. Although the existing literature examines the impact of heat waves and morbidity, past research has mostly been conducted in high-income countries (HICs), and studies on the impact of heat waves on morbidity in low- or middle-income countries (LMICs) are still scarce. OBJECTIVE This paper presents the protocol for a systematic review that aims to provide evidence of the impact of heat waves on health care services in LMICs. METHODS We will identify peer-reviewed studies from 3 online databases, including the Web of Science, PubMed, and SCOPUS, published from January 2002 to April 2023, using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Quality assessment will be conducted using the Navigation Guide checklist. Key search terms include heatwaves, extreme heat, hospitalization, outpatient visit, burden, health services, and morbidity. RESULTS This systematic review will provide insight into the impact of heat waves on health care services in LMICs, especially on emergency department visits, ambulance call-outs, hospital admissions, outpatient department visits, in-hospital mortality, and health care operational costs. CONCLUSIONS The results of this review are anticipated to help policymakers and key stakeholders obtain a better understanding of the impact of heat waves on health care services and prioritize investments to mitigate the effects of heat waves in LMICs. This entails creating a comprehensive heat wave plan and ensuring that adequate infrastructure, capacity, and human resources are allocated in the health care sector. These measures will undoubtedly contribute to the development of resilience in health care systems and hence protect the health and well-being of individuals and communities. Abstract
Ambulance data has been reported to be a sensitive indicator of health service use during hot days, but there is no comprehensive summary of the quantitative association between heat and ambulance dispatches. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to retrieve and synthesise evidence published up to 31 August 2022 about the association between heat, prolonged heat (i.e. heatwaves), and the risk of ambulance dispatches. We initially identified 3628 peer-reviewed papers and included 48 papers which satisfied the inclusion criteria. The meta-analyses showed that, for each 5 °C increase in mean temperature, the risk of ambulance dispatches for all causes and for cardiovascular diseases increased by 7% (95% confidence interval (CI): 5%, 10%) and 2% (95% CI: 1%, 3%), respectively, but not for respiratory diseases. The risk of ambulance dispatches increased by 6% (95% CI: 4%, 7%), 7% (95% CI: 5%, 9%), and 18% (95% CI: 12%, 23%) under low-intensity, severe, and extreme heatwaves, respectively. We observed two potential sources of bias in the existing literature: (1) bias in temperature exposure measurement; and (2) bias in the ascertainment of ambulance dispatch causes. This review suggests that heat exposure is associated with an increased risk of ambulance dispatches, and there is a dose-response relationship between heatwave intensity and the risk of ambulance dispatches. For future studies assessing the heat-ambulance association, we recommend that (1) using data on spatially refined gridded temperature that is either very well interpolated or derived from satellite imaging may be an alternative to reduce exposure measurement bias; and (2) linking ambulance data with hospital admission data can be useful to improve health outcome classification.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given the increasing trend of global warming and extreme weather conditions, including heat waves and its effects on health, the present study was done to investigate adaptive behaviors of communities in the world for combating heat waves. METHOD ology: In this systematic review, out of 1529 results, 57 relevant and authoritative English papers on adaptation to heat waves hazard were extracted and evaluated using valid keywords from valid databases (PubMed, WOS, EMBASE, and Scopus). In addition, multiple screening steps were done and then, the selected papers were qualitatively assessed. Evaluation results were summarized using an Extraction Table. RESULTS In this paper, the adaptive behaviors for combating heat waves hazard were summarized into 11 categories: Education and awareness raising, Adaptation of critical infrastructure, Governments measures, Health-related measures, Application of early warning system, Protective behaviors in workplace, Physical condition, Adaptive individual behaviors, Design and architecture of the building, Green infrastructure (green cover), and Urban design. CONCLUSION The findings of this study showed that community actions have significant effects on adaptation to heat wave. Therefore, for reducing heat wave-related negative health effects and vulnerability, more attention should be paid to the above-mentioned actions for mitigation, preparation, and responding regarding heat waves. Abstract
By now, O3 pollution has become a main environmental problem. O3 is a prevalent risk factor for many diseases, but the regulatory factors linking O3 and diseases remain ambiguous. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is the genetic material in mitochondria, which plays a key role in the production of respiratory ATP. Due to a lack of histone protection, mtDNA is easily damaged by ROS, and O3 is an important source to stimulate the production of endogenous ROS in vivo. Therefore, we logically speculate that O3 exposure can alter mtDNA copy number by the induction of ROS. In the present study, we performed a panel study of 65 MSc students at the Chinese research academy of environmental sciences (CRAES) with 3 rounds of follow-up visits from August 2021 to January 2022. We examined the mtDNA copy numbers in the peripheral blood of subjects using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Linear mixed-effect (LME) model and stratified analysis were used to investigate the association between O3 exposure and mtDNA copy numbers. We found a dynamic process of the association between the concentration of O3 exposure and the mtDNA copy number in the peripheral blood. The lower concentration of O3 exposure did not affect the mtDNA copy number. As the concentration of O3 exposure increased, the mtDNA copy number also increased. While, when O3 exposure reached a certain concentration, a decrease in mtDNA copy number was found. This correlation between the concentration of O3 and the mtDNA copy number could be ascribed to the severity of cellular damage induced by O3 exposure. Our results provide a new perspective for the discovery of a biomarker of O3 exposure and health response, as well as for the prevention and treatment of adverse health effects caused by different concentrations of O3.

Abstract
Background Ambient temperature change is a risk factor for urolithiasis that cannot be ignored. The association between temperature and urolithiasis varies from region to region. Our study aimed to analyze the impact of extremely high and low temperatures on the number of inpatients for urolithiasis and their lag effect in Ganzhou City, China. Methods We collected the daily number of inpatients with urolithiasis in Ganzhou from 2018 to 2019 and the meteorological data for the same period. The exposure-response relationship between the daily mean temperature and the number of inpatients with urolithiasis was studied by the distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM). The effect of extreme temperatures was also analyzed. A stratification analysis was performed for different gender and age groups. Results There were 38,184 hospitalizations for urolithiasis from 2018 to 2019 in Ganzhou. The exposure-response curve between the daily mean temperature and the number of inpatients with urolithiasis in Ganzhou was non-linear and had an observed lag effect. The warm effects (30.4°C) were presented at lag 2 and lag 5-lag 9 days, and the cold effects (2.9°C) were presented at lag 8 and lag 3-lag 4 days. The maximum cumulative warm effects were at lag 0-10 days (cumulative relative risk, CRR = 2.379, 95% CI: 1.771, 3.196), and the maximum cumulative cold effects were at lag 0-5 (CRR = 1.182, 95% CI: 1.054, 1.326). Men and people between the ages of 21 and 40 were more susceptible to the extreme temperatures that cause urolithiasis. Conclusion Extreme temperature was correlated with a high risk of urolithiasis hospitalizations, and the warm effects had a longer duration than the cold effects. Preventing urolithiasis and protecting vulnerable people is critical in extreme temperature environments.

Abstract
Previous studies have quantified the associations between ambient temperature and dispatch of ambulances, but the conclusions are still controversial. Therefore, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to summarize all the current evidence. A systematic review of published literature was undertaken to characterize the effect of temperature on ambulance dispatch. We completed the literature search by the end of January 5, 2022. The pooled estimates for different temperature exposures were calculated using a random effects model. Differences among temperature pooled estimates were determined using subgroup analysis. This study was registered with PROSPERO under the number CRD42021284434. This is the first meta-analysis investigating the association between temperature and ambulance dispatch. A total of 25 studies were eligible for this study. The overall increased risks of high temperature, expressed as relative risks, were 1.734 (95% CI: 1.481-2.031). Subgroup analysis found that for the study using daily mean temperature, the high temperature increased the risk of ambulance dispatch by 15.2% (RR = 1.152, 95%CI: 1.081-1.228). In the ambulance dispatch of all-cause subgroups, the RR was 1.179 (95% CI: 1.085-1.282). The results also reported a significant association between low temperature and ambulance dispatch (RR = 1.130, 95% CI: 1.052-1.213). In the subgroup, the RR for cardiovascular disease was 1.209 (95% CI: 1.033-1.414), and respiratory disease was 1.126 (95% CI: 1.012-1.253). Sensitivity analysis indicated that the results were robust, and no obvious publication bias was observed. High temperature and low temperature are important factors influencing the dispatch of ambulances. These findings help improve the understanding of temperature effect on ambulance dispatch, demonstrating the need to consider wider surveillance of acute health outcomes in different environments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Thailand’s emergency medical services (EMSs) are constantly evolving both in terms of personnel and technology in pre-hospital care. While sustainable development goals (SDGs) are used in part as a catalyst for development in all countries, there are currently no studies regarding the relationship between EMS research and SDGs in Thailand.
AIM: This study aims to analyze how Thailand’s EMS research was affected after the National Institute for Emergency Medicine (NIEM) was established and how SDGs are related.
METHODS: This was an analytical cross-sectional database study. Data were collected in the Scopus database with Thailand’s EMS records between 2008 and 2022. Three experienced emergency physicians were enrolled independently in this study for the purpose of giving opinions and feedback on the research.
RESULTS: The three experts of this study are qualified emergency physicians in Thailand. The greatest number of the expert’s publications from the Scopus database was 117 articles. The greatest number of citations was 3994. The 175 documents were analyzed with three experts reviewing all documents and then narrowing it down to 25 documents. The most common SDG found in documents was Goal 3: GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING.
CONCLUSIONS: The development of Thailand’s EMS after the establishment of NIEM varied in aspects ranging from triage systems and care in ambulances to vehicle selection and technology. Goal 3: GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING occurred most frequently in publications regarding SDGs in EMS studies.
