Abstract
Chronic orofacial pain (COFP; i.e., musculoskeletal, neurovascular, or neuropathic pain in the face, mouth, or jaw that lasts for at least 3 months) is prevalent and debilitating. Chronic pain and substance use frequently co-occur, and individuals with COFP face unique challenges (e.g., uncertainty about future pain episodes, difficulty eating, drinking and talking) that may influence substance use. Nevertheless, no work to date has comprehensively assessed substance use among individuals with COFP. Here, we examine the prevalence of substance use among adults with COFP. Participants included 246 adults with COFP who were recruited from the Facial Pain Association. Participants completed an online survey that included a comprehensive assessment of substance use (i.e., Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance Involvement Screening Test) between December 2023 and January 2024. Most participants (82.9%) have used ≥ 1 substance in their lifetime, over two-thirds (68.3%) currently use ≥ 1 substance, and nearly half (43.5%) engage in risky substance use. The most commonly used substances were alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, opioids, and sedatives. This study presents a comprehensive assessment of substance use among adults with COFP. Findings extend prior work documenting high rates of substance use among individuals with chronic pain to a sample of adults with COFP. Given that substance use can exacerbate chronic pain and interfere with pain management, findings underscore the importance of assessing and addressing substance use among individuals with COFP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stroke ranks as the second leading cause of death worldwide. Meanwhile, headaches are considered the second leading cause of disability, and they often occur as a stroke complication. However, insufficient attention has been given to the treatment and rehabilitation of headaches among stroke patients, and the research on the epidemiology and risk factors of headaches in stroke patients in China is limited. Therefore, in this study, China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) data were utilized for a cross-sectional analysis to estimate the prevalence of headaches in stroke patients and identify the associated risk factors. METHOD This study utilized data, which included those of participants aged 45 and above from 28 provinces across China, from the nationally representative CHARLS 2018 database. A total of 876 stroke patients and 17,469 nonstroke patients were considered in this work. Stroke diagnosis and headache status were determined based on self-reported questionnaire responses. Cross-sectional analysis determined the prevalence of headaches in patients with strokes and those without through quantification of individuals diagnosed with headaches. Categorical variables were presented as percentages and counts, and univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to calculate the odds ratios (OR) for the risk factors associated with headaches in stroke patients. RESULTS In the 2018 data, 328 individuals with stroke-related headaches were screened and compared with 4,249 individuals without the condition. Overall, a cross-sectional survey revealed that the headache prevalence among stroke patients reached 37.44% (95% confidence interval (CI): 34.23%-40.74%), which was higher than the overall headache prevalence among nonstroke patients 24.32% (95% CI: 23.69%-24.97%). Headaches were considerably more common in women (45.95%; 95% CI: 41.31%-50.58%) than in men (26.70%; 95% CI: 24.44%-32.97%; gender difference, p < 0.001). According to multifactorial logistic regression analysis, the risk factors for stroke-related headaches included being female (OR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.02-2.07), residency in Central (2.50, 1.37-4.54), Eastern (1.87, 1.07-3.27), and Northwest China (2.49, 1.06-5.84), Very poor self-health (4.06, 1.90-8.68), diabetes (1.85, 1.11-3.07), shoulder pain (4.01, 2.77-5.81), back pain (2.01, 1.32-3.05), and chest pain (2.51, 1.55-4.06). CONCLUSION Enhancement of self-awareness of health, effective management of diabetes, and minimization of the physical discomfort in the shoulders, back, and chest may contribute to the decreased occurrence of headaches. Therefore, targeted prevention and treatment of headaches are necessary.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) encompass a spectrum of orofacial conditions characterised by pain and dysfunction in the temporomandibular joint and surrounding structures. Tobacco smoking has been posited as a potential factor influencing the prevalence and intensity of TMD. However, the nature and extent of this relationship remain unclear due to variations in study outcomes. This systematic review aimed to consolidate existing research findings to elucidate the association between tobacco smoking and TMD pain intensity. METHODS A comprehensive search of electronic databases was conducted to identify relevant studies published up to June 2023. Studies investigating the relationship between tobacco smoking and TMD pain were included. Data extraction was conducted by two reviewers. Quality assessment was performed using the New Castle-Ottawa scale. Review Manager 5.4 was used to quantitatively analyse the results. RESULTS The review included four studies employing similar TMD assessment techniques. All studies reported elevated TMD pain intensity among tobacco users, with non-smokers exhibiting lower pain intensity. The quality of the included studies was good. Meta-analytic results showed that TMD pain intensity was higher in the smokers group compared to the non-smokers group, with a weighted mean difference (WMD) of 0.65 (BPM) (95% CI: [0.10, 1.19], p = .02). CONCLUSION This systematic review provides a comprehensive synthesis of the existing literature on tobacco smoking and TMD symptoms. The findings underscore the multifaceted nature of the relationship between smoking and TMD pain, highlighting its clinical relevance and the need for tailored interventions. Further research is warranted to elucidate underlying mechanisms and potential moderating factors, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of this complex association.

Abstract
Cigarette smoking significantly contributes to preventable illness, death, and economic costs. Despite overall reduction in national smoking rates, disparities persist between demographic groups and geographic regions. While some studies have explored urban-rural differences in smoking prevalence, gaps exist in understanding localized patterns. This study focuses on examining smoking rates and related factors at the census tract level in McLennan County, Texas, a county that contains a mixture of urban, peri-urban, and rural areas. This study uses census tract level aggregate sociodemographic, smoking, and health-related data from the American Community Survey and the PLACES Project City Health Dashboard. Geospatial analyses mapped co-occurrence of high prevalence of smoking, mental and physical distress, and co-occurrence of lower routine medical check-ups, household income, and education. Multiple linear regression modeled associations between smoking and sociodemographic, and health-related factors. Geospatial analyses identified census tracts with co-occurring high prevalence of smoking, mental and physical distress, and co-occurrence of lower routine medical check-ups, household income, and education level in McLennan County. Regression analyses identified that smoking rates were positively correlated with frequent physical distress (p < 0.0001) and negatively correlated with the proportion of routine medical check-ups (p < 0.0001) and the proportion living in poverty (p = 0.0002). This study found significant variations in smoking rates, physical and mental distress, medical check-ups, and sociodemographic factors between neighboring census tracts which geospatial analyses examining larger geographic units may have overlooked. Future research should focus on obtaining individual-level and community-level data to develop more targeted interventions sensitive to specific community contexts.

Abstract
It is more than recognized and accepted that the environment affects the physiological responses of all living things, from bacteria to superior vertebrates, constituting an important factor in the evolution of all species. Environmental influences range from natural processes such as sunlight, seasons of the year, and rest to complex processes like stress and other mood disorders, infections, and air pollution, being all of them influenced by how each creature deals with them. In this chapter, it will be discussed how some of the environmental elements affect directly or indirectly neuropathic pain, a type of chronic pain caused by a lesion or disease of the somatosensory nervous system. For that, it was considered the edge of knowledge in translational research, thus including data from human and experimental animals as well as the applicability of such findings.

Abstract
Background: Latinx individuals experience significant tobacco cigarette smoking-related diseases and illnesses. Although most Latinx smokers report a desire to quit smoking, evidenced-based cessation treatments are underutilized in this group, which may partially be due to lower likelihood of receiving advice from a healthcare professional. Further, there are a lack of cessation treatments that account for comorbid symptoms/conditions (e.g., co-occurring pain) and social determinants of health (e.g., perceived discrimination). Extant work has established the reciprocal relation between pain and smoking trajectories. Additionally, although social determinants, such as perceived racial/ethnic discrimination, have demonstrated clinical relevance to a variety of health-related behaviors, limited work has examined the role of perceived discrimination in pain-smoking relations. The current study examined the effects of perceived discrimination and pain severity in relation to smoking cessation problems and self-efficacy for quitting among Latinx cigarette smokers. Method: Participants included 226 (Mage = 34.95 years, SD = 8.62; 38.5% female) adult Latinx daily cigarette smokers. Results: Results indicated that the interaction of pain and perceived discrimination was predictive of greater quit problems (p = 0.041) as well as greater confidence in the ability to refrain from smoking in response to internal (p < 0.001) and external stimuli (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Overall, this work provides a more nuanced understanding of the psychosocial contexts in which Latinx smokers may encounter problems related to quitting, and this data is important for future smoking cessation research and treatment.

Abstract
Latinx individuals experience significant health disparities related to smoking cessation in the United States (US). Although past works have consistently implicated pain in the maintenance of smoking behavior, limited research has examined the role of social determinants (e.g., perceived discrimination) in pain-smoking relations. The current study sought to examine the moderating role of perceived discrimination in the relation between pain severity and smoking abstinence expectancies (i.e., a cognitive factor related to poor smoking outcomes) among 226 Latinx individuals who currently smoke cigarettes (Mage = 34.95 years; SD = 8.62; 38.5% female). The results indicated a statistically significant interaction between pain severity and perceived discrimination with regard to smoking abstinence expectancies (i.e., negative mood, somatic symptoms, harmful consequences, and positive consequences). Post-hoc analyses revealed the association of pain severity and negative mood, harmful consequences, and positive consequences smoking abstinence expectancies evident for individuals with higher perceived discrimination. Moreover, the association between pain severity and somatic symptoms smoking abstinence expectancies was stronger for individuals with higher perceived discrimination. Overall, these results suggest that clinical and community-based public health strategies may benefit from addressing the role of perceived discrimination among Latinx individuals who smoke cigarettes in the context of pain.
