Recent Advances in Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and Their Composites for Non-Enzymatic Electrochemical Glucose Sensors

In recent years, with pressing needs such as diabetes management, the detection of glucose in various substrates has attracted unprecedented interest from researchers in academia and industry. As a relatively new glucose sensor, non-enzymatic target detection has the characteristics of high sensitivity, good stability and simple manufacturing process. However, it is urgent to explore novel materials with low cost, high stability and excellent performance to modify electrodes. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their composites have the advantages of large surface area, high porosity and high catalytic efficiency, which can be utilized as excellent materials for electrode modification of non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors. However, MOFs and their composites still face various challenges and difficulties that limit their further commercialization. This review introduces the applications and the challenges of MOFs and their composites in non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors. Finally, an outlook on the development of MOFs and their composites is also presented.

Synthesis of a novel diaquabis(1,10-phenanthroline)copper(II)chloride complex and its voltammetric application for detection of amoxicillin in pharmaceutical and biological samples

A one step facile synthesis of the novel diaquabis(1,10-phenanthroline)copper(II)chloride (A₂P₂CuC) complex is demonstrated. Cyclic voltammetric and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic results revealed potentiodynamic deposition of a conductive electroactive poly(A₂P₂CuC) film on the glassy carbon electrode surface increasing its effective surface area. In contrast to the unmodified glassy carbon electrode, appearance of an oxidative peak at a reduced potential with over two fold current for amoxicillin at poly(A₂P₂CuC)/GCE demonstrated its electrocatalytic property attributed to reduce charge transfer resistance and the improved surface area of the electrode surface. Better correlation of the oxidative peak current with square root of scan rate (R² = 0.99779) than with scan rate (R² = 0.96953) supplemented by slope of 0.58 for log(current) versus log(scan rate) confirmed diffusion controlled irreversible oxidation of amoxicillin. At optimized solution and SWV parameters, current response of poly(A₂P₂CuC)/GCE showed linear dependence on concentration of amoxicillin (2.0–100.0 μM) with LoD 0.0115 μM. While no amoxicillin was detected in the human blood serum sample, an amount 89.40–100.55% of the nominal level was detected in the analyzed eight tablet brands. Spike recovery in tablet samples (98.90–101.95%) and blood serum sample (102.20–101.37%); interference with an error (%RSD) of 0.00–4.51% in tablet and 0.00–2.10% in serum samples; excellent stability and reproducible results, added with the wide dynamic range and low LoD validated the method for amoxicillin determination in pharmaceutical formulations and human urine samples.

Ratiometric rapid distinction of two structurally similar fluoroquinolone antibiotics by a Tb/Eu hydrogel

Norfloxacin and ofloxacin are two frequently prescribed second-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotics with an identical 4-quinolone chromophore and hence, are difficult to distinguish by conventional methods (UV or fluorescence). We have designed a Tb3+/Eu3+/cholate cocktail that enabled us to differentiate these two drugs and rapidly measure their concentrations when present together. Additionally, a Tb3+-cholate gel-based paper sensor was developed to detect and quantify them in a single drug containing system with a limit of detection (LOD) well below 100 nM.

Using nanostructured carbon black-based electrochemical (bio)sensors for pharmaceutical and biomedical analyses: A comprehensive review

The outstanding electronic properties of carbon black (CB) and its economic advantages have fueled its application as nanostructured electrode material for the development of new electrochemical sensors and biosensors. CB-based electrochemical sensing devices have been found to exhibit high surface area, fast charge transfer kinetics, and excellent functionalization. In the present work, we set forth a comprehensive review of the recent advances made in the development and application of CB-based electrochemical devices for pharmaceutical and biomedical analyses - from quantitative monitoring of drug formulations to clinical diagnoses - and the underlying challenges and constraints that need to be overcome. We also present a thorough discussion about the strategies and techniques employed in the development of new electrochemical sensing platforms and in the enhancement of their analytical properties and biocompatibility for anchoring active biomolecules, as well as the combination of these sensing devices with other materials aiming at boosting the performance and efficiency of the sensors.

Electrochemical sensor based on Ni-exchanged natural zeolite/carbon black hybrid nanocomposite for determination of vitamin B6

The utilization of environmentally friendly nanoporous natural zeolite exchanged with Ni²⁺ ions (NiZ) and conductive carbon black (CB) in the fabrication of a novel and selective voltammetric sensor of vitamin B₆ (VB₆) is presented. The used clinoptilolite-rich zeolite material and CB were characterized in terms of morphology and textural properties. The superior properties of Ni-zeolite/carbon black modified glassy carbon electrode (NiZCB-GCE), arising from the synergistic effect of combining the unique features of zeolite and conductive carbon black, were confirmed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. In the determination of VB₆ with the use of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), the optimization of the pH value of supporting electrolyte and instrumental parameters, as well as the interference study were performed. Under optimized conditions, the oxidation peak current at the potential +0.72 V vs. Ag | AgCl | 3 M KCl reference electrode was linear to the VB₆ concentration in the range 0.050 to 1.0 mg L⁻¹ (0.30–5.9 μmol L⁻¹) (R = 0.9993). The calculated limit of detection (LOD, S/N = 3), equal to 15 μg L⁻¹ (0.09 μmol L⁻¹), was much better compared to chemically modified electrodes with other carbon-based materials. The RSD for 0.5 mg L⁻¹ was in the range 2.5–5.4% (n = 4). The developed NiZCB-GCE was successfully applied to the determination of VB₆ in commercially available multivitamin dietary supplements, food, and water samples. The obtained recoveries ranged from 95 to 106%.

Anodic Adsorptive Stripping Voltammetric Determination of Rafoxanide on Glassy Carbon Electrode

AIMS AND OBJECTIVE

The development of easy, accurate, reliable technique which is characterized by low cost, minimal sample pre-treatment, and short analysis time to monitor RFX residues in milk samples before distribution to consumers.

BACKGROUND

Literature survey reveals several analytical methods, including high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) and thin-layer chromatography (TLC)-densitometry. These methods are time consuming, require additional steps like preconcentration or multisolvent extraction, trained technicians, and expensive instruments.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The electrochemical analysis of RFX was effectively established by the adsorptive stripping method on GCE due to the effective interfacial accumulation of RFX on the electrode surface. The RFX adsorptive accumulation is followed by electrochemical measurement of the accumulated analyte.

RESULTS

The electrochemical oxidation of RFX was studied at glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) in Britton-Robinson buffer (BR) solutions over the pH range from 2.0-12.0 using cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The oxidation of the drug was accomplished in a single irreversible, adsorption-controlled step within the pH range 4.0-9.0. Therefore, the application of GCE for a sensitive and selective quantification of RFX by adsorptive stripping voltammetry was reported. This format was satisfactorily applied for the determination of RFX in bovine milk. Limit of detection (LOD) of 1.25 μg kg-1 of milk and mean recoveries of 97.8 to 107.5% were achieved.

CONCLUSION

The proposed method might be competitive with the HPLC techniques. The detection limit found for RFX on GCE for milk samples, after medium exchange, was well below the MRLs, the maximum concentration of a veterinary drug residue legally permissible in food, are proposed by the European Medicines Agency.

A review on analytical methods with special reference to electroanalytical methods for the determination of some anticancer drugs in pharmaceutical and biological samples

It is widely accepted that cancer, the second leading cause of death, is a morbidity with big impacts on the global health. In the last few years, chemo-therapeutic treatment continually induces alone most lengthy consequents, which is extremely harmful for the physiological and psychological health of the patients. In the present research, we discuss the recent techniques for employed for extraction, and quantitative determination of such compounds in pharmaceutical, and biological specimens. In the frame of this information, this review aims to provide basic principles of chromatography, spectroscopy, and electroanalytical methods for the analysis of anticancer drugs published in the last three years. The review also describes the recent developments regarding enhancing the limit of detection (LOD), the linear dynamic range, and so forth. The results show that the LOD for the chromatographic techniques with the UV detector was obtained equaled over the range 2.0 ng mL^-1-0.2 μg mL^-1, whereas the LOD values for analysis by chromatographic technique with the mass spectrometry (MS) detector was found between 10.0 pg mL^-1-0.002 μg mL^-1. The biological fluids could be directly injected to capillary electrophoresis (CE) in cases where the medicine concentration is at the contents greater than mg L^-1 or g L^-1. Additionally, electrochemical detection of the anticancer drugs has been mainly conducted by the voltammetry techniques with diverse modified electrodes, and lower LODs were estimated between 3.0 ng mL^-1-0.3 μg mL^-1. It is safe to say that the analyses of anticancer drugs can be achieved by employing a plethora of techniques such as electroanalytical, spectroscopy, and chromatography techniques.

Voltamperometric Sensors and Biosensors Based on Carbon Nanomaterials Used for Detecting Caffeic Acid-A Review

Caffeic acid is one of the most important hydroxycinnamic acids found in various foods and plant products. It has multiple beneficial effects in the human body such as antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antineoplastic. Since overdoses of caffeic acid may have negative effects, the quality and quantity of this acid in foods, pharmaceuticals, food supplements, etc., needs to be accurately determined. The present paper analyzes the most representative scientific papers published mostly in the last 10 years which describe the development and characterization of voltamperometric sensors or biosensors based on carbon nanomaterials and/or enzyme commonly used for detecting caffeic acid and a series of methods which may improve the performance characteristics of such sensors.

Recent Trends in Electrochemical Sensors for Vital Biomedical Markers Using Hybrid Nanostructured Materials

This work provides a succinct insight into the recent developments in electrochemical quantification of vital biomedical markers using hybrid metallic composite nanostructures. After a brief introduction to the biomarkers, five types of crucial biomarkers, which require timely and periodical monitoring, are shortlisted, namely, cancer, cardiac, inflammatory, diabetic and renal biomarkers. This review emphasizes the usage and advantages of hybrid nanostructured materials as the recognition matrices toward the detection of vital biomarkers. Different transduction methods (fluorescence, electrophoresis, chemiluminescence, electrochemiluminescence, surface plasmon resonance, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy) reported for the biomarkers are discussed comprehensively to present an overview of the current research works. Recent advancements in the electrochemical (amperometric, voltammetric, and impedimetric) sensor systems constructed with metal nanoparticle-derived hybrid composite nanostructures toward the selective detection of chosen vital biomarkers are specifically analyzed. It describes the challenges involved and the strategies reported for the development of selective, sensitive, and disposable electrochemical biosensors with the details of fabrication, functionalization, and applications of hybrid metallic composite nanostructures.

Carbon Black Flow Electrode Enhanced Electrochemical Desalination Using Single-Cycle Operation

Flow-electrode electrochemical desalination (FEED) processes (e.g., flow-electrode capacitive deionization), which use flowable carbon particles as the electrodes, have attracted increasing attention, holding the promise for continuous desalination and high desalting efficiency. While it is generally believed that carbon particles with abundant microporous and large specific capacitances (e.g., activated carbon, AC) should be ideal candidates for FEED electrodes, we provide evidence to the contrary, showing that highly conductive electrodes with low specific surface area can outperform microporous AC-based electrodes. This study revealed that FEED using solely high surface area AC particles (∼2000 m² g^-1, specific capacitance of ∼44 F g^-1, average salt adsorption rate of ∼0.15 μmol cm^-2 min^-1) was vastly outperformed by electrodes based solely on low-surface area carbon black (CB, ∼70 m² g^-1, ∼0.5 F g^-1, ∼0.75 μmol cm^-2 min^-1). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results suggest that the electrode formed by CB particles led to more effective electronic charge percolation, likely contributing to the improved desalination performance. In addition, we propose and demonstrate a novel operation mode, termed single cycle (SC), which greatly simplified the FEED cell configuration and enabled simultaneous charging and discharging. Using SC mode with CB flow electrodes delivered an increased average salt removal rate relative to the more traditional short-circuited closed cycle (SCC) mode, achieving up to 1.13 μmol cm^-2 min^-1. Further investigations demonstrate that up to 50% of energy input would be avoided when using CB flow electrodes operated under SC mode as compared to that of AC flow electrodes operated under SCC mode. In summary, the FEED process presented in this study provided an innovative and promising approach toward high-efficient and low-cost brackish water desalination.
