Abstract
With the rapid development of society, food safety to public health has been a topic that cannot be ignored. In recent years, lanthanide-based materials are studied to be potential candidates in the detection of food samples. Cerium (Ce)-based materials (such as Ce ions, CeO2, Ce-metal organic framework (Ce-MOF), etc.) have also attracted more attention in food detection by virtue of colorimetric, fluorescence, sensing, and other methods. This is because the mixed valence of Ce (Ce3+ and Ce4+), the formation of oxygen vacancies, and their optical and electrochemical properties. In this review, Ce-based materials will be introduced and discussed in the field of food detection, including biogenesis, construction, catalytic mechanisms, combination, and applications. In addition, the current challenges and future development trend of these Ce-based materials in food safety detection are also proposed and discussed. Therefore, it is meaningful to explore the Ce-based materials for detection of biomarkers in food samples.

Abstract
Herein, a new, direct paper-based fluorimetric method is described for the quantitative determination of glutathione (GSH) molecules in nutritional supplements. Briefly, the proposed analytical method is based on the fluorescence emission resulting from the direct and selective chemical reaction of GSH molecules with the derivatization reagent that is o-phthalaldehyde (OPA) in acidic conditions at room temperature. The intensity of the emitted fluorescence on the surface of the analytical paper devices after irradiation with a lamp at 365 nm is proportional to the concentration of GSH and is measured using a smartphone as the detector. This methodology, which is suitable for measurements in laboratories with limited resources, does not require specialized instrumentation or trained personnel. The protocol governing the proposed method is simple and easily applicable. Essentially, the chemical analyst should adjust the value of pH on the surface of the paper by adding a minimal amount of buffer solution; then, after adding a few microliters of the derivatization reagent, wait for the surface of the paper to dry and, finally, add the analyte. Subsequently, the irradiation of the sensor and the measurement of the emitted fluorescence can be recorded with a mobile phone. In the present study, several parameters affecting the chemical reaction and the emitted fluorescence were optimized, the effect of interfering compounds that may be present in dietary supplements was examined, and the stability of these paper sensors under different storage conditions was evaluated. Additionally, the chemical stability of these paper devices in various maintenance conditions was studied, with satisfactory results. The detection limit calculated as 3.3 S/N was 20.5 μmol L-1, while the precision of the method was satisfactory, ranging from 3.1% (intra-day) to 7.3% (inter-day). Finally, the method was successfully applied to three different samples of dietary supplements.

Abstract
Phosphotungstic acid covered with CeO2 hollow nanospheres (CeO2@PTA HNSs) has been successfully prepared by a simple method, serving as highly efficient nanozymes for ascorbic acid (AA) colorimetric sensing. In virtue of the unique hollow nanostructures, oxide defects and synergic effects of CeO2 and PTA, the proposed CeO2@PTA HNSs present remarkable intrinsic oxidase-like activity and help capture electrons from 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). Due to the reducibility of AA, a promising colorimetric sensing platform based on CeO2@PTA HNSs has been constructed for quantitative analysis of AA. The present colorimetric detection exhibits a low limit of detection, good selectivity and stability, as well as reliability in orange juice and milk. This work provides a simple surface defect engineering to prepare high-performance oxidase mimics in the application of colorimetric biosensing.

Abstract
Inflammatory diseases are usually featured with relatively high level of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The excess ROS facilitate the polarization of microphages into proinflammatory M1 phenotype, and cause DNA damage, protein carbonylation, and lipid peroxidation, resulting in further deterioration of inflammatory diseases. Therefore, alleviating oxidative stress by ROS scavenging has been an effective strategy for reversing inflammation. Inspired by the natural antioxidant enzymes, electron transfer-based artificial antioxidant nanozymes have been emerging therapeutics for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. The present review starts with the basic knowledge of ROS and diseases, followed by summarizing the possible active centers for the preparation of antioxidant nanozymes. The strategies for the design of antioxidant nanozymes on the purpose of higher catalytic activity are provided, and the applications of the developed antioxidant nanozymes on the therapy of inflammatory diseases are discussed. A perspective is included for the design and applications of artificial antioxidant nanozymes in biomedicine as well.

Abstract
Nanozymes have been widely used to construct colorimetric sensors due to their advantages of cost-effectiveness, high stability, good biocompatibility, and ease of modification. The emergence of nanozymes greatly enhanced the detection sensitivity and stability of the colorimetric sensing platform. Recent significant research has focused on designing various sensors based on nanozymes with peroxidase-like activity for colorimetric analysis. However, with the deepening of research, nanozymes with peroxidase-like activity has also exposed some problems, such as weak affinity and low catalytic activity. In view of the above issues, existing investigations have shown that the catalytic properties of nanozymes can be improved by adding surface modification and changing the structure of nanomaterials. In this review, we summarize the recent trends and advances of colorimetric sensors based on several typical nanozymes with peroxidase-like activities, including noble metals, metal oxides, metal sulfides/metal selenides, and carbon and metal-organic frameworks (MOF). Finally, the current challenges and prospects of colorimetric sensors based on nanozymes with peroxidase-like activity are summarized and discussed to provide a reference for researchers in related fields.

Abstract
In this work, we propose a matrix-free approach for the analysis of fingermarks (FMs) contaminated with five cosmetic products containing different active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) using surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI-MS). For this purpose, a magnetic SALDI substrate based on Fe3O4-CeO2 magnetic nanoparticles was prepared, characterized, and optimized for the analysis of contaminated FMs without sample pretreatment. Initially, groomed FM and cosmetic products were separately analyzed, and their major components were successfully detected. Subsequently, FMs contaminated with Ordinary serum and Skinoren, Dermovate, Bepanthen, and Eucerin creams were analyzed, and components of FM and cosmetics were detected. The stability of the cosmetics in FMs was studied over an interval of 28 days, and all components showed good stability in FM for 4 weeks. Recovery of contaminated FMs from different surfaces utilizing a few microliters of the magnetic substrate was carried out using a simple external magnetic field from ceramic, plastic, metal, and glass. Successful retrieval of the API and FM components was achieved with magnetic recovery, and glass exhibited the best recovery, whereas ceramic tile demonstrated the lowest recovery. This was supported by atomic force microscopy study, which revealed that the ceramic surface had higher roughness than the other surfaces employed in this study, which adversely affected the magnetic maneuvering. This proof-of-concept investigation extends the application of SALDI-MS in forensic analysis of contaminated FMs by exploring cosmetics as exogenous materials and their stability and recovery from different surfaces.

Abstract
A new iron porphyrin-based organic polymer (Fe-POP) was synthesized through the William ether reaction. The as-prepared Fe-POP presented high chemical stability, wide pore distribution, high iron content, and strong affinity with 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which contributed to its excellent peroxidase-mimicking performance. In the presence of H2O2, Fe-POP could catalyze the transparent TMB into blue ox-TMB, which could be easily distinguished by the naked eyes. Moreover, glutathione (GSH) and ascorbic acid (AA) could convert blue ox-TMB into colorless TMB due to the inhibitory effect of GSH/AA to the catalytic oxidation of TMB. Based on this phenomenon, a rapid and sensitive colorimetric method for the assay of H2O2, GSH, and AA was developed using Fe-POP as sensor. The detection limits of H2O2, GSH, and AA were 1.37, 0.44, and 0.33 μM, respectively. Finally, the colorimetric method based on Fe-POP was used to evaluate the GSH and AA content in real samples, which provided the guidance for GSH and AA supplements in our daily diet, suggesting the significant potential of Fe-POP in practical applications.

Abstract
A novel Z-scheme titania loaded on fibrous silica ceria (Ti-FSC) was triumphantly fabricated via hydrothermal followed by electrolysis method and evaluated for the visible-light degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP). Noticeably, Ti-FSC exhibits as an efficient photocatalyst for CIP photodegradation with 95% as followed by titania loaded on fibrous silica (Ti-FS) (68%), Ti-CeO2 (35%), FSC (47%), FS (22%), and CeO2 (17%). The combination of the inherent merits of Ti loaded on FSC is able to realize the crucial role of Ce in harnessing the high dispersion of Ti, which could beneficial for improving the performance proven by XRD, FESEM, TEM and FTIR. Consequently, high dispersion of Ti on FSC has worthwhile towards the interaction of the Si-O-Ti, Ce-O-Ti, and Si-O-Ti, which could enhance the CIP photodegradation by providing more surface defects, narrowing the band gap, improving electron-hole separation and suppressing electron-hole recombination that revealed by XPS, UV-vis/DRS, Nyquist plots and PL studies, respectively. The scavenger study revealed that the controlling species in the system was hydroxyl radical and holes. A potential Z-scheme heterojunction mechanism for Ti-FSC was deduced from the band structure analysis. The possible photodegradation pathway was proposed based on GCMS analysis. Besides, the acceptable reusability, which exceeded 90% of degradation indicated the great application potential of Z-scheme Ti-FSC in wastewater treatment and others application.

Abstract
This study reports an economical and portable point-of-care (POC) monitoring device based on artificial multi-enzyme cascade systems for multiple detection purposes. The device was made up of a disposable three dimensional microfluidic paper-based analytical device (3D μPAD) with multiple detection zones and a smartphone readout. On-paper synthesis of a multifunctional mimetic composite, based on the CeO2 nanoparticles embedded in the amino-functionalized Fe metal-organic frameworks (CeO2@NH2-MIL-88B(Fe)), for cascade reactions was the main achievement of this work. The 3D μPAD was applied for simultaneous quantification of glucose, fructose, sucrose and maltose, and the detection process consisted of the enzymatic reaction of each sugar by anchored enzymes on the metal-organic frameworks (MOF) and successive oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). Utilizing the new artificial mimicking system improved the color development uniformity and resulted in a reliable detection tool, with excellent detection limits in the range of 20-280 μM. It was directly applied to analyze the sugars levels of human total blood, urine, semen, honey and juice samples with the relative errors of less than 7.7% compared with the HPLC method. The cost-effective and easy-to-use μPAD has a great potential to be used in either medical diagnostics or the food industry. Also, it can be considered as a competitive POC method for patients in disadvantaged communities or emergencies.

Abstract
Enzyme-like nanomaterials have received significant attention for their high stability and low cost. However, most nanomaterials require complicated synthesis processes, limiting the range of their potential applications. In this study, a novel cerium-based nanomaterial was fabricated in a facile manner from a mixture of dipicolinic acid (DPA), guanosine 5'-monophosphate (GMP), and cerium acetate under ambient conditions. The obtained nanomaterial, designated as DPA-Ce-GMP, exhibited superior oxidase-like activity owing to the mixed valence (Ce3+/Ce4+) of cerium ions. DPA-Ce-GMP efficiently catalyzed the oxidation of 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), achieving a color reaction without requiring hydrogen peroxide. Thus, DPA-Ce-GMP was incorporated into a simple, rapid, and sensitive colorimetric sensor for glutathione (GSH) detection. Within this sensor, TMB oxidation is inhibited by the reducibility of GSH. The sensor exhibits a linear response over two concentration ranges (0.05-10 and 10-40 μM), and its detection limit is 17.1 nM (3σ/slope). The proposed sensor was successfully applied to GSH quantification in food samples. The developed sensor provides an efficient biomimic oxidase for GSH detection in real samples. Facile approach to prepare cerium-based nanomaterial with superior oxidase-like activity for colorimetric detection of glutathione in food samples.

UiO-67 decorated on porous carbon derived from Ce-MOF for the enrichment and fluorescence determination of glyphosate. Mikrochim Acta 2022; 189:130. Abstract
A nanocomposite was prepared by loading UiO-67 nanoparticles onto porous carbon materials derived from Ce-MOF (Ce-PC) for fluorescence detection of glyphosate. The probe (UiO-67/Ce-PC) exhibits fluorescence emission at 414 nm as the response signal under excitation at 310 nm. The fluorescence enhancement mode of UiO-67 reduces the background interference, and the introduction of Ce-PC provide hierarchical nanostructure and large specific surface area that can increase the contact availability and improve the pre-enrichment effect, ensuring UiO-67/Ce-PC with superior sensitivity. The abundant metal hydroxyl group (M-O-H) of UiO-67/Ce-PC could recognize phosphoryl groups (-PO3H2) of glyphosate through ligand exchange, which synergizes with H-bonding interaction and electrostatic attraction to exhibit specificity toward glyphosate. The competitive coordination effects weaken the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) and consequently induce the fluorescence recovery. The calibration plot of the fluorescence enhancement response of UiO-67/Ce-PC towards glyphosate was recorded in the range 0.02-30 μg mL-1 with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.0062 μg mL-1, which is superior to the pure UiO-67. In addition, the sensor exhibited high selectivity and satisfactory accuracy and precision with recoveries of 92.1-105.6% and RSDs below 3.4%. This work not only presents a feasible sensor for sensitive and selective determination of glyphosate from cereal samples, but also provides a promising strategy for the design of MOF-based nanocomposites to achieve trace detection of various pollutants.

Abstract
Nitrogen-functionalization is an effective means of improving the catalytic performances of nanozymes. In the present work, plasma-assisted nitrogen modification of nanocolumnar Ni GLAD films was performed using an ammonia plasma, resulting in an improvement in the peroxidase-like catalytic performance of the porous, nanostructured Ni films. The plasma-treated nanozymes were characterized by TEM, SEM, XRD, and XPS, revealing a nitrogen-rich surface composition. Increased surface wettability was observed after ammonia plasma treatment, and the resulting nitrogen-functionalized Ni GLAD films presented dramatically enhanced peroxidase-like catalytic activity. The optimal time for plasma treatment was determined to be 120 s; when used to catalyze the oxidation of the colorimetric substrate TMB in the presence of H2O2, Ni films subjected to 120 s of plasma treatment yielded a much higher maximum reaction velocity (3.7⊆10-8 M/s vs. 2.3⊆10-8 M/s) and lower Michaelis-Menten coefficient (0.17 mM vs. 0.23 mM) than pristine Ni films with the same morphology. Additionally, we demonstrate the application of the nanozyme in a gravity-driven, continuous catalytic reaction device. Such a controllable plasma treatment strategy may open a new door toward surface-functionalized nanozymes with improved catalytic performance and potential applications in flow-driven point-of-care devices.

Abstract
A nanozyme for glutathione (GSH) detection in a broad concentration range was synthesized. GSH is usually detected up to an upper limit of 100 μM using current noble metal nanozymes due to the sharp decrease in the colorimetric response with the increasing GSH concentration. Strong inhibition of colorimetric reactions by GSH adsorbed onto noble metal based nanozymes in the form of non-porous, nanoscale particulate materials dispersed in an aqueous medium is the reason for the sharp decrease in the colorimetric response. In the present study, a new magnetic nanozyme synthesized by immobilization of Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) on magnetic, monodisperse porous silica microspheres (>5 μm) obtained by a "staged-shape templating sol-gel protocol" exhibited peroxidase-like activity up to a GSH concentration of 5000 μM. A more controlled linear decrease in the peroxidase-like activity with a lower slope with respect to that of similar nanozymes was observed with the increasing GSH concentration. The proposed design allowed the GSH detection in a broader concentration range depending on the adsorption of GSH onto the Au NPs immobilized on magnetic, monodisperse porous silica microspheres. A calibration plot allowing the detection of GSH in a broad concentration range up to 3300 μM was obtained using the magnetic nanozyme. The GSH concentration was also determined in human serum by elevating the upper detection range and adjusting the sensitivity of detection via controlling the nanozyme concentration.

Abstract
In this paper, nanoparticles decorated Ce2(WO4)3 nanosheets (CWNSs) with negative potential and large specific surface area were synthesized and developed as highly efficient peroxidase mimics for colorimetric detection of H2O2. CWNSs can efficiently catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H2O2 to induce an obvious color variation. Kinetic analysis indicated that the catalytic behaviors of CWNSs obey the typical Michaelis-Menten mechanism. The peroxidase-like catalytic mechanism of CWNSs was proposed according to the active species trapping experiments, verifying that ·O2- radicals played primary roles in the catalytic reaction. Based on the strong and stable peroxidase-like catalytic activity of CWNSs, a simple, rapid, selective, and ultrasensitive method was successfully established for colorimetric detection of H2O2. The method has a good linear response ranging from 0.5 μM to 100 μM for H2O2 concentration with a lower detection limit of 0.15 μM. Benefitting from the sensitive response and good stability, the method is applied in real sample detection and shows a favorable reproducibility and feasibility. This work not only provides a novel enzymatic mimics with remarkable catalytic activities for biomedical and environmental analysis, but also extends the application area of Ce2(WO4)3 materials.

Abstract
N,N-dicarboxymethyl Perylene-diimide (PDI) modified CeCoO3 nanocomposites were prepared by a two-step method. After modification with PDI molecules, the obtained PDI-CeCoO3 nanocomposites were demonstrated to possess the heightened peroxidase-like activity, compared with that of pure CeCoO3 nanoparticles. In the presence of H2O2, the heightened peroxidase-like behaviors of PDI-CeCoO3 were evaluated by the oxidation of the colorless substrate 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into blue oxTMB, which was detected visually only in 4 min. Importantly, a systematic study of catalytic activity of PDI-CeCoO3 by different means, including fluorescent probe, electrochemical data, diffuse reflection spectra together with free radical scavenger is executed, verifying that the catalytic activity were from O2- and electron holes (h+). And, the transfer of photogenerated carriers in the PDI-CeCoO3 was the Z-scheme heterojuntion mechanism. Furthermore, the peroxidase-like activity of PDI-CeCoO3 was significantly inhibited by Glutathione (GSH), resulting in fading of blue oxTMB. Based on this, a colorimetric assay for GSH biosensing has been developed. And, the liner range for GSH detection is from 1 to 10 μM with a detection limit of 0.658 μM. The recovery of GSH with different concentrations from 90.0% to 105.9% and the relative standard deviation (RSD) from 1.9% to 5.1%. This colorimetric sensor can be used to detect GSH in real samples.

Abstract
In this work, we report the synthesis of Cu-Ag bimetallic nanopartiles and g-C3N4 nanosheets decorated on zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) to form a Cu-Ag/g-C3N4/ZIF hybrid. The hybrid was synthesized and characterized by Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR), the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The Cu-Ag/g-C3N4/ZIF hybrid has intrinsic peroxidaselike catalytic activity towards the oxidation of TMB in the presence of H2O2. The situ synthesis of Cu-Ag bimetallic nanopartiles on 2D support such as g-C3N4 nanosheets would significantly enhance the peroxidaselike catalytic properties of individual Cu-Ag bimetallic nanopartiles and the g-C3N4 nanosheets. After loading of Cu-Ag bimetallic nanopartiles and g-C3N4 nanosheets on the ZIF-8, the hybrids exhibited superior peroxidaselike catalytic activity and good recyclability. Then, this method was applied for detecting glucose in human serum, owing the significant potential for detection of metabolites with H2O2-generation reactions.

Abstract
A metal organic framework obtained from cerium(III) and trimesic acid was pyrolyzed to obtain a novel nanostructure referred to as CeO2/C nanowires. The experimental parameters temperature, precursor and gas atmosphere were optimized. The nanowires show good dispersion and a large number of oxygen vacancies, and this leads to excellent peroxidase-like activity. The nanowires are stable at pH values between 2 and 10, and in the 4-80 °C temperature range. The peroxidase-mimicking activity was exploited in a sensitive colorimetric method for determination of H2O2 by using 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine as the chromogenic substrate. The absorbance at 652 nm increases linearly in the 0.5 to 100 μM H2O2 concentration range. If glucose oxidase is added to a solution containing glucose, H2O2 will be enzymatically produced. This was exploited to design a new method for determination of glucose. The optical response is linear in the 1-100 μM glucose concentration range, and the detection limit is 0.69 μM (at S/N = 3). The method was successfully applied to the determination of glucose in serum samples. Graphical abstractCeO2/C nanowires prepared by Ce-MOF pyrolysis show peroxidase-like activity and are able to catalyze the oxidation of tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by H2O2. This was applied to glucose oxidase-based colorimetruc determination of glucose in human sera.

Rapid colorimetric determination of dopamine based on the inhibition of the peroxidase mimicking activity of platinum loaded CoSn(OH) 6 nanocubes. Mikrochim Acta 2019; 186:755. Abstract
Platinum nanoparticles were loaded on CoSn(OH)6 nanocubes via a co-precipitation method. The material (NCs) is shown to be a viable peroxidase mimic that catalyzes the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to generate oxidized TMB (oxTMB) with absorption at 652 nm. The formation of the blue color can be observed in <30 s. Thus, a visual and colorimetric assay was worked out for H2O2. It has a detection limit as low as 4.4 μM and works in the 5 to 200 μM concentration range. The method was also used to detect dopamine (DA) which is found to inhibit the enzyme mimicking activity of the NCs. Hence, less blue color is formed in its presence. The respective DA assay has a linear response in the 5.0 to 60 μM concentration range and a 0.76 μM detection limit. Graphical abstractSchematic diagram of a visual colorimetric method for determination of H2O2 and dopamine (DA) with the aid of color change of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (oxTMB), based on the peroxidase-like activity of Pt/CoSn(OH)6 nanocubes.

Abstract
Nanozymes have drawn considerable attention because of their lower cost, higher stability and convenient preparation compared to protein enzymes. In the present work, Mo, S co-doped carbon quantum dots (Mo-CQDs) as a peroxidase mimic were used to fabricate a cascade colorimetric biosensor to detect cholesterol. The Mo-CQDs possess a robust peroxidase-like activity, and they can easily catalyze 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to produce an oxidized TMB in the presence of H2O2. The Mo, S doping in the carbon quantum dots (CQDs) notably boosts the yield of CQDs and may facilitate the electron transfer between TMB and H2O2, which further enhances the catalytic activity of CQDs. The colorimetric biosensor based on Mo-CQDs and cholesterol oxidase exhibited excellent selectivity and high sensitivity for cholesterol in the range of 0.01-1.0 mM along with a detection limit as low as 7 μM. The total cholesterol concentration in the serum sample was measured with satisfactory results and read out by the naked eye, indicating the potential application in clinical diagnosis and portable test kits.

Abstract
In this paper, we demonstrate a facile solvothermal synthesis of a vanadium(v) doped MoS2-rGO nanocomposites for highly efficient electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at room temperature. The surface morphology, crystallinity and elemental composition of the as-synthesized material have been thoroughly analyzed. Its fascinating morphology propelled us to investigate the electrochemical performance towards the HER. The results show that it exhibits excellent catalytic activity with a low onset potential of 153 mV versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), a small Tafel slope of 71 mV dec−1, and good stability over 1000 cycles under acidic conditions. The polarization curve after the 1000th cycle suggests there has been a decrement of less than 5% in current density with a minor change in onset potential. The synergistic effects of V-doping at S site in MoS2 NSs leading to multiple active sites and effective electron transport route provided by the conductive rGO contribute to the high activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction. The development of a high-performance catalyst may encourage the effective application of the as-synthesized V-doped MoS2-rGO as a promising electrocatalyst for hydrogen production. In this paper, we demonstrate a facile solvothermal synthesis of a vanadium(v) doped MoS2-rGO nanocomposites for highly efficient electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at room temperature.![]()
