A nanohybrid composed of polyoxotungstate and graphene oxide for dispersive micro solid-phase extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs prior to their quantitation by HPLC

Evaluation of organo-vermiculites as sorbent phases for solid-phase extraction of ibuprofen from water

The study of ibuprofen (IBU) preconcentration was carried out making use of a homemade column for solid-phase extraction (SPE), using vermiculite (VT) or organo-vermiculites (OVTs) as sorbent phases. Aqueous samples (50.0 mL) percolated the column and IBU was sorbed onto the VT or OVT and then desorbed using acetonitrile. Employing this SPE system and OVT, calibration curves were generated for IBU, by spectrophotometric quantification using the α-naphthylamine method. R2 values higher than 0.9950 and LOD between 12 and 18 μg L-1 were observed, for real enrichment factors of 21 and 31, by using OVTs. The analytical protocol was applied to three water samples, which were spiked with IBU solutions to evaluate the precision and accuracy of the method. Recoveries between 77 and 110% at three different IBU concentrations and RSD lower than 18% were observed, even by using the spectrophotometric method. The protocol developed in this study demonstrated that the OVT was appropriate to work as a preconcentration phase for IBU determination in water samples.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the environment: Updates on pretreatment and determination methods

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used in human and animal health care to reduce persistent inflammation, pain and fever because of their anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic effects. However, the improper discharge and disposal make it becomes a major contaminant in the environment, which poses a big threat to the ecosystem. For this reason, accurate, sensitive, effective, green, and economic techniques are urgently required and have been rapidly developed in recent years. This review summarizes the advancement of sample preparation technologies for NSAIDs involving solid-phase extraction, solid-phase microextraction, liquid-phase microextraction, QuEChERS, and matrix solid-phase dispersion. Meanwhile, we overview and compare analytical technologies for NSAIDs, including liquid chromatography-based methods, gas chromatography-based methods, capillary electrophoresis, and sensors, particularly the development of liquid chromatography-based methods. Furthermore, we focus on their progress and conduct a comparison between their advantages and disadvantages.

Efficient oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides catalyzed by heterogeneous Zr-containing polyoxometalate grafted on graphene oxide

In this study, a tri-component composite named Zr/SiW12/GO was meticulously prepared through an ultrasonic-assisted method. This composite incorporates zirconium nanoparticles (Lewis acid), a negatively charged Keggin type polyoxometalate, and graphene oxide, and serves as a remarkable heterogeneous catalyst. The Keggin component plays multiple roles as reducing, encapsulating, and bridging agents, resulting in a cooperative effect among the three components that significantly enhances the catalytic activity. The catalytic performance of Zr/SiW12/GO was thoroughly investigated in the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides under mild conditions, employing H2O2 as the oxidant. Remarkably, this composite exhibited exceptional stability and could be effortlessly recovered and reused up to four times without any noticeable loss in its catalytic activity.

Polyester fabric-based nano copper-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes sorbent for thin film extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

In this study, in-situ preparation of copper nanoparticles under sonoheating conditions followed by coating on commercial polyester fabric is reported. Through the self-assembly interaction of thiol groups and copper nanoparticles, the modified polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) was deposited on the fabric's surface. In the next step, radical thiol-ene click reactions were implemented to create more layers of POSSs. Subsequently, the modified fabric was applied for sorptive thin film extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including naproxen, ibuprofen, diclofenac, and mefenamic acid from urine samples, followed by high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with a UV detector. The morphology of the prepared fabric phase was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, water angle contact, energy dispersive spectrometry mapping, analysis of nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The significant extraction parameters, including the acidity of the sample solution, desorption solvent and its volume, extraction time, and desorption time, were investigated using the one-variable-at-a-time approach. Under the optimal condition, NSAIDs' detection limit was 0.3-1 ng mL^-1 with a wide linear range of 1-1000 ng mL^-1. The recovery values were between 94.0% and 110.0%, with relative standard deviations of less than 6.3%. The prepared fabric phase exhibited acceptable repeatability, stability, and sorption property toward NSAIDs in urine samples.

Insight into the adsorptive removal of ibuprofen using porous carbonaceous materials: A review

Over the last decade, the removal of pharmaceuticals from aquatic bodies has garnered substantial attention from the scientific community. Ibuprofen (IBP), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, is released into the environment in pharmaceutical waste as well as medical, hospital, and household effluents. Adsorption technology is a highly efficient approach to reduce the IBP in the aquatic environment, particularly at low IBP concentrations. Due to the exceptional surface properties of carbonaceous materials, they are considered ideal adsorbents for the IBP removal of, with high binding capacity. Given the importance of the topic, the adsorptive removal of IBP from effluent using various carbonaceous adsorbents, including activated carbon, biochar, graphene-based materials, and carbon nanostructures, has been compiled and critically reviewed. Furthermore, the adsorption behavior, binding mechanisms, the most effective parameters, thermodynamics, and regeneration methods as well as the cost analysis were comprehensively reviewed for modified and unmodified carbonaceous adsorbents. The compiled studies on the IBP adsorption shows that the IBP uptake of some carbon-based adsorbents is significantly than that of commercial activated carbons. In the future, much attention is needed for practical utilization and upscaling of the research findings to aid the management and sustainability of water resource.

Nanofiber-based sorbents: Current status and applications in extraction methods

Advanced sorbents gradually become a research hotspot on account of the increasing attention paid to environmental problems. Due to the prominent physicochemical features of nanofibers (NFs), such as high porosity, large surface area, favorable interconnectivity, high adsorption capacity, wettability, and the possibility of surface modification using functional groups, these nanostructures are regarded as excellent candidates for extraction applications. Therefore, the research in the field of NFs and their nanocomposites has been increasing in recent years. In the present review, we summarize the most recent studies on NFs-based sorbents focusing on strategies for preparation, characterization, and their unique capabilities as porous sorbents in various sorbent-based extraction methods. Moreover, we further described the performance and selectivity of sorbents to achieve improved extraction efficiency. Finally, some perspectives on the challenges and outlook are provided to aid future investigations related to this topic.

Opioid Drug Detection in Hair Samples Using Polyoxometalate-Based Frameworks

A series of two-dimensional (2D) polyoxometalate-based frameworks, [Ln₃(PDA)₃(H₂O)₆(PMo₁₂O₄₀)]·xH₂O (Ln = La (1); Ce (2); Pr (3); Nd (4); PDA = 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylate), have been synthesized and structurally characterized by various analytical techniques. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that 1-4 have a unique 2D layer structure in which Keggin anions have coordinated upward and downward the plane, and this feature makes them suitable candidates for surface binding of common drugs via supramolecular and electrostatic interactions. Also, the ability of 1-4 (as the first polyoxomolybdate-containing frameworks) as sorbents for the extraction and quantitative determination of opioid drugs (morphine, methadone, and pethidine) was investigated by using dispersive micro-solid-phase extraction (D-μSPE) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The method showed wide linear ranges in the range of 0.3 to 300 ng mg^-1 and low limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 0.1 to 0.2 ng mg^-1 of hair.

Polyoxometalate-based materials in extraction, and electrochemical and optical detection methods: A review

Polyoxometalates (POMs) as metal-oxide anions have exceptional properties like high negative charges, remarkable redox abilities, unique ligand properties and availability of organic grafting. Moreover, the amenability of POMs to modification with different materials makes them suitable as precursors to further obtain new composites. Due to their unique attributes, POMs and their composites have been utilized as adsorbents, electrodes and catalysts in extraction, and electrochemical and optical detection methods, respectively. A survey of the recent progress and developments of POM-based materials in these methods is therefore desirable, and should be of great interest. In this review article, POM-based materials, their properties as well as their identification methods, and analytical applications as adsorbents, electrodes and catalysts, and corresponding mechanisms of action, where relevant, are reviewed. Some current issues of the utilization of these materials and their future prospects in analytical chemistry are discussed.

A simple and ultrasensitive metal-organic framework-based aptasensor for fluorescence detection of ethanolamine

In this research, a facile fluorescence aptasensor was designed for the ultrasensitive determination of ethanolamine (ETA) as an aliphatic amino alcohol molecule with harmful side effects for human health. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as an efficient metal-organic framework was applied to quench the fluorescence emission of the FAM-labeled ETA aptamer. The presence of ETA could recover the fluorescence response under the optimal experimental conditions. ETA could be sensitively detected by the designed aptasensor in the linear concentration range of 0.1 nM-20 µM with the detection limit of 14.38 pM. The designed aptasensor was utilized to determine ETA in milk and serum samples with the detection limits of 17.86 and 15.21 pM, respectively. The aptasensor with the remarkable features of high sensitivity, simplicity and feasibility holds the supreme potential to construct a low-cost portable sensing method for food safety control, human diagnostics, and environmental monitoring with coupling to the microfluidic paper-based devices.

Self-supported 3D reduced graphene oxide for solid-phase extraction: An efficient and low-cost sorbent for environmental contaminants in aqueous solution

A 3D reduced graphene oxide (3D-rGO), a self-supported, efficient, and low-cost sorbent, was synthesised and employed in a solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridge. As a proof of concept, it was applied to remove diclofenac from aqueous solution. After applying statistical methods to systematically investigate key parameters for optimizing the 3D-rGO cartridge performance, it reached removal and elution efficiencies of 100 % and 90 %, respectively. This SPE cartridge presented advantages compared to traditional ones as the smaller amount of material into the cartridge (mass twenty times smaller), in addition to the ability of eliminating sorbent preconditioning, reducing the use of solvents, and making the process environmentally friendly with a faster operation. Also, it presented improved reproducibility after several cycles of reuse, and finally a lower cost of production unveiled by a cost-benefit analysis. Analysis with scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry, Raman, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflectance mode suggested that the 3D framework morphology with a high content of carbon at the surface and some residual oxygen-containing groups are the protagonists in this performance. Therefore, 3D-rGO has the potential to be a highly efficient sorbent in analytical procedures using SPE for environmental contaminants in water and effluent samples.

Fabrication of stable multivariate metal-organic frameworks with excellent adsorption performance toward bisphenols from environmental samples

As a type of environmental endocrine disrupting chemicals, bisphenols (BPs) have a certain embryonic toxicity and teratogenicity, which can significantly increase the risks of breast cancer, prostate cancer, leukemia and other cancers. In this work, stable multivariate metal-organic frameworks (UiO-66-NH₂/TCPP_x) were synthesized via in situ one-pot method and used as miniaturized dispersive solid-phase extraction (dμSPE) sorbents for extraction of trace BPs from environmental samples. The phase purity, crystal morphology and physical properties of UiO-66-NH₂/TCPP_x samples were varied by adjusting the mass ratio of TCPP. The extraction performance of UiO-66-NH₂/TCPP_x samples were investigated and UiO-66-NH₂/TCPP_1.0 exhibited the highest adsorption efficiency. Besides, UiO-66-NH₂/TCPP_1.0 possessed excellent recycling stability for the adsorption and desorption of BPs more than 20 cycles. The experimental parameters including amount of adsorbent, adsorption time, sample solution pH, temperature, desorption time and desorption solvents which affecting the efficiency of dμSPE were studied, respectively. Good linearity (R² > 0.9992) in range of 0.1-200 ng mL^-1 was obtained. The detection limits (S/N = 3) and quantification limits (S/N = 10) were achieved at 0.03-0.08 ng mL^-1 and 0.1-0.5 ng mL^-1, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of intra-day and inter-day ranged from 2.5 to 5.5% and 1.1-6.8%. Enrichment factors were calculated in the range of 303-338. The obtained recoveries of bisphenol F (BPF), bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol B (BPB) and bisphenol AF (BPAF) were 81.26-91.03% (RSDs = 0.96-6.47%), 82.2-97.27% (RSDs = 0.45-6.15%), 87.56-97.26% (RSDs = 1.1-6.22%) and 82.2-100.8% (RSDs = 0.46-4.07%). The UiO-66-NH₂/TCPP_1.0 can be employed as potential dμSPE sorbents for the enrichment of trace BPs in the environmental samples.

[Recent advance of new sample preparation materials in the analysis and detection of environmental pollutants]

To successfully analyze complex samples and detect trace targets, sample pretreatment is essential. Efficient sample pretreatment techniques can remove or reduce interference from the sample matrix. It can also enrich analytes, thereby improving analytical accuracy and sensitivity. In recent years, various sample preparation techniques, including SPE, magnetic dispersion SPE, pipette tip SPE, stir bar extraction, fiber SPME, and in-tube SPME, have received increasing attention in environmental analysis and monitoring. The extraction efficiency mainly depends on the type of adsorbent material. Therefore, the development of efficient adsorbents is a crucial step toward sample preparation. This review summarizes and discusses the research advances in extraction materials over recent years. These extraction materials contain inorganic adsorbents, organic adsorbents, and inorganic-organic hybrid materials such as graphene, graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, inorganic aerogels, organic aerogels, triazinyl-functionalized materials, triazine-based polymers, molecularly imprinted polymers, covalent organic frameworks, metal-organic frameworks, and their derivatives. These materials have been applied to extract different types of pollutants, including metal ions, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, plasticizers, alkanes, phenols, chlorophenols, chlorobenzenes, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, perfluorosulfonic acids, perfluorocarboxylic acids, estrogens, drug residues, and pesticide residues, from environmental samples (such as water and soil samples). These sample preparation materials possess high surface areas, numerous adsorption sites, and allow extraction via various mechanisms, such as π-π, electrostatic, hydrophobic, and hydrophilic interactions, as well as hydrogen and halogen bond formation. Various sample pretreatment techniques based on these extraction materials have been combined with various detection methods, including chromatography, mass spectrometry, atomic absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and ion mobility spectroscopy, and have been extensively used for the determination of environmental pollutants. The existing challenges associated with the development of sample preparation techniques are proposed, and prospects for such extraction materials in environmental analysis and monitoring are discussed. Major trends in the field, including the development of efficient extraction materials with high enrichment ability, good selectivity, excellent thermal stability, and chemical stability, are discussed. Green sample pretreatment materials, environmentally friendly synthesis methods, and green sample pretreatment methods are also explored. Rapid sample pretreatment methods that can be conducted within minutes or seconds are of significant interest. Further, online sample pretreatment and automatic analysis methods have attracted increasing attention. Besides, real-time analysis and in situ detection have been important development directions, and are expected to be widely applicable in environmental analysis, biological detection, and other fields. Modern synthesis technology should be introduced to synthesize specific extraction materials. Controllable preparation methods for extraction materials, such as the in situ growth or in situ preparation of extraction coatings, will acquire importance in coming years. It will also be important to adopt high-performance materials from other fields for sample pretreatment. Organic-inorganic hybrid extraction materials can combine the advantages both organic materials and inorganic materials, and mutually compensate for any disadvantages. Extraction materials doped with nanomaterials are also promising. Although existing sample pretreatment techniques are relatively efficient, it is still imperative to develop novel sample preparation methods.

Separation and Enrichment of Sudan III Using Surface Modified Hollow Glass Microspheres and Colorimetric Detection

BACKGROUND

Sudan III has been shown to be carcinogenic to human beings due to the azo chemical structure. A simple, highly selective, and environmentally friendly pretreatment method is usually required before the analysis of Sudan III in complex practical samples due to low concentration and matrix interference.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this research was to prepare buoyant adsorbents, octyl trimethoxysilane caped hollow glass microspheres (HGMs), and establish a new pretreatment method for the detection of Sudan III in real samples.

METHOD

HGMs were activated and transferred to a flask containing 80 mL ethanol solution (9:1, v/v) and 0.9 mL ammonia. The octyl trimethoxysilane was added to the slurry and covalently coupled on the surface of the HGMs. The modified HGMs were used as adsorbents for the enrichment of Sudan III. After adsorption and desorption, the UV-Vis absorption spectrum was recorded under excitation at 506 nm.

RESULTS

Under the optimum conditions, the linear range and detection limit were 0.10-4.0 mg/L and 0.048 mg/L, respectively. The proposed method was successfully employed to detect Sudan III in chili products with acceptable recoveries of spikes (90.7-102%).

CONCLUSIONS

The adsorbent, which could be separated by flotation, provided a new solid phase extraction method for the pretreatment of complex samples.

HIGHLIGHTS

A new solid phase extraction method was provided for the pretreatment of complex samples. In addition, the adsorbents with high enrichment efficiency can be easily separated by flotation and repeatedly used for separation and enrichment of Sudan III.

Solid-phase extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in human plasma and water samples using sol-gel-based metal-organic framework coating

In this research, the Cu-based metal-organic framework (MOF-199) was fabricated and coated on the stainless steel mesh as substrates through sol-gel procedure. Then the coated substrates were placed in a small column known as solid-phase extraction cartridge. The SPE based coated stainless steel mesh coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography-UV detector (HPLC-UV) was used for the fast extraction, and quantification of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) from human plasma and water samples. To find optimum extraction conditions, the impacts of effective parameters on analytical performance like sample pH, sample volume, type, and volume of desorption solvent were optimized. At the optimized conditions, calibration graphs of analytes were linear in the concentration range of 0.03-300 ng mL^-1 for water samples, and 0.1-200 ng mL^-1 for plasma samples. The correlation coefficients were in the range of 0.9938 to 0.9989. Also, the limits of detection (LODs) were from 0.01 to 0.02 ng mL^-1 for water samples and 0.03 to 0.1 ng mL^-1 for plasma samples. The cartridge repeatability was studied at different values, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs%) were achieved between 3.5 and 5.1%. Consequently, this procedure was successfully used in the extraction and detection of NSAIDs in real water and plasma samples with relative recoveries ranged from 93.6 to 99.6%.

Efficient dispersive micro solid-phase extraction of antidepressant drugs by a robust molybdenum-based coordination polymer

A molybdenum-based coordination polymer {[Mo(PDA)(NO)(μ-O)MoO₃]·1.42H₂O·0.58C₂H₅OH}_n (1) (PDA is 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylate) was synthesized using solvothermal reaction conditions and characterized using a suite of analytical techniques. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal a 1D chain structure, with close contacts expanding the structure into 3D including π-interactions and hydrogen bonding. The utility of 1 as a sorbent for dispersive micro solid-phase extraction (D-μSPE) of basic organic compounds such as antidepressants is supported by the presence of many functional groups on the surface of 1 (such as pendant carboxylates, Mo=O, Mo-NO, and CH groups) as well as extensive electrostatic interactions. Therefore, 1 can be a suitable choice as sorbent in the D-μSPE of antidepressant drugs from human plasma samples via appreciable adsorbate-adsorbent interactions. Determination of the extracted antidepressant drugs was conducted using high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet (HPLC-UV), with calibration plots being linear in the concentration range 0.1-500 ng mL^-1 for amitriptyline and nortriptyline, 0.2-500 ng mL^-1 for imipramine, and 0.5-300 ng mL^-1 for sertraline. The relative standard deviation (RSD) values were calculated for both intra-day and inter-day precision, and the RSD% values were in the range 3.9 to 5.2% and 4.6-5.4%, respectively. The limits of detection (LODs) was determined as 0.03-0.2 ng mL^-1. Due to the good stability and reusability of the sorbent, the adsorption capacity had no obvious decrease after being used 20 times. Finally, the D-μSPE-HPLC-UV method was applied for the determination of antidepressant drugs in human plasma samples with recoveries of the analytes in the range 94.9 to 102%. The article describes the synthesis of a robust molybdenum-based coordination polymer, and its application as sorbent for dispersive micro solid-phase extraction of antidepressant drugs from human plasma samples.

Design of green coating material of combining rigid and flexible properties for the extraction of aminoglycosides residues

Bio-based and low-cost hybrid polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and gelatin (Gel) hydrophilic macromolecular complex coated microspheres were prepared based on one-pot process, characterized, and applied as novel sorbent materials for the purification of trace aminoglycosides from complex matrices. PVA acts as a "rigid" component in the hybrid complex to enhance its mechanical properties, while Gel's "flexible" role is to improve the swelling properties of the hybrid complex in water. It is shown that hybrid PVA/Gel-functionalized sorbents are more efficient than the respective PVA or Gel sorbents since the presence of Gel increases the material selectivity for aminoglycosides, which is due to the specific interactions occurring between the targets and amino acid residues in the hybrid materials. Under the optimum conditions, material preparation and pretreatment processes were entirely carried out in single water system without toxic organic solvent. The detection limit (LOD) of spectinomycin, kanamycin, streptomycin and dihydrostreptomycin in honey were 0.811, 0.303, 0.168, 0.045 μg⋅kg^-1 respectively. Linearity was obtained in the range of 20 to 2000 ug⋅kg^-1, relative recovery yield up to 84.1-111.7% were obtained and matrix effect of all four aminoglycosides was within 100.8-107.6%. Intra-day and inter-day precision under four spiking levels (5, 200, 500 and 1000 ug⋅kg^-1) were less than 10.9% (n=6) and 13.6% (n=3) respectively. In addition, the sorbents exhibited excellent reusability even after six recycles. This work demonstrates the potential of bio-based and low-cost hybrid polymer extraction platforms as promising bonded phase alternatives, in which eco-friendly and natural-based polymers can be used to improve the material selectivity and are conducive to the realization of "green chemistry".

Starch-Mg/Al layered double hydroxide composites as an efficient solid phase extraction sorbent for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as environmental pollutants

Using a co-precipitation method, starch-Mg/Al layered double hydroxide (S-Mg/Al LDH) composites were synthesized. Their physicochemical properties were assessed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and thermo-gravimetric analysis. The quantification of six non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) was conducted using real samples (e.g., hospital waste water, river water, sewage treatment plant water, and tablet formulations) by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. For the development of this method, the system was optimized in terms of several key variables (e.g., pH, flow rate, and eluent type/volume). The developed method for NSAIDs exhibited good resolution, sensitivity, reproducibility, and specificity even in complex matrices with limits of detection between 4 and 20 pg/mL. Hence, S-Mg/Al LDH composites were proven to be efficient and fast solid phase extraction (SPE) sorbents for NSAIDs. In addition, each LDH-SPE cartridge showed good reusability without a noticeable change in performance (e.g., up to 30 cycles) and target recoveries between 99.5 - 82.9 %. This work should open up new opportunities for a sesnsitive and sustainable quantitative method for the determination of NSAIDs in complex samples.

Synthesis and Characterization of Graphene Oxide and Reduced Graphene Oxide Composites with Inorganic Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications

Graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO), due to their large active surface areas, can serve as a platform for biological molecule adhesion (both organic and inorganic). In this work we described methods of preparing composites consisting of GO and RGO and inorganic nanoparticles of specified biological properties: nanoAg, nanoAu, nanoTiO2 and nanoAg2O. The idea of this work was to introduce effective methods of production of these composites that could be used for future biomedical applications such as antibiotics, tissue regeneration, anticancer therapy, or bioimaging. In order to characterize the pristine graphene materials and resulting composites, we used spectroscopic techniques: XPS and Raman, microscopic techniques: SEM with and AFM, followed by X-Ray diffraction. We obtained volumetric composites of flake graphene and Ag, Au, Ag2O, and TiO2 nanoparticles; moreover, Ag nanoparticles were obtained using three different approaches.

In-situ fabrication of zeolite imidazole framework@hydroxyapatite composite for dispersive solid-phase extraction of benzodiazepines and their determination with high-performance liquid chromatography-VWD detection

A novel zeolite imidazole framework@hydroxyapatite composite (ZIF-8@HAP) was constructed via in-situ growth and developed for efficient dispersive solid-phase extraction (DSPE) of three benzodiazepines from urine samples. The prepared composite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectrometer, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray diffractometry, zeta potential analyzer, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption experiment. Characterization results showed typical dodecahedron ZIF-8 crystals that were uniformly located on the surface of rod-like HAP. The combination of ZIF-8 and HAP made the surface area significantly enhanced from 4.68 to 205.44 m² g^-1. Compared with a commercial C₁₈ adsorbent, ZIF-8@HAP exhibited superior removal performance for interfering components from urine and offered better extraction properties for the analytes. The prepared ZIF-8@HAP was applied as an adsorbent in DSPE, and the main experimental parameters, including pH and ionic strength of solution, adsorbent amount, adsorption time, elution solvent, and volume, were investigated. Under optimal conditions, the adsorption for 250 ng mL^-1 of each analyte in 4 mL of urine was accomplished within 2 min using 60 mg of adsorbent. The method of ZIF-8@HAP-based DSPE followed by high-performance liquid chromatography gave enhancement factors of 13.3-15.3, linear ranges of 2.5-500 ng mL^-1, and limits of detection (S/N = 3) of 0.7-1.4 ng mL^-1. The relative recoveries at three spiked levels ranged from 88.7 - 102% with intra-day and inter-day precisions from 3.0 - 10.3% and 2.3 - 12.3%, respectively. Combination of magnetic solid-phase extraction and HPLC-UV for simultaneous determination of four phthalate esters in plastic bottled juice

A magnetic o-hydroxyazobenzene (M-HAzo) porous organic polymer was facilely prepared by a green azo coupling reaction in aqueous solution. The prepared M-HAzo was applied as a new adsorbent for the first time to pre-concentrate phthalate esters (PAEs) from plastic bottled juice, followed by their determination with high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection. The effects of various parameters, i.e., the mass ratio of the Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ to HAzo, extraction time, ionic strength, pH of the sample, desorption conditions were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the M-HAzo based method exhibited good performance in terms of linear range (0.3-50.0 μg L^-1), detection limit (0.08-0.50 μg L^-1), accuracy (recovery of 78.0-115.0%) and repeatability (relative standard deviation of 2.9-7.8%). This work provides a sensitive method for analysis of PAEs at trace levels in drinks, which is featured with high sensitivity, simple operation and environmentally-friendly merit and will have a promising potential in analysis of other organic pollutants.

The Current Role of Graphene-Based Nanomaterials in the Sample Preparation Arena

Since its discovery in 2004 by Novoselov et al., graphene has attracted increasing attention in the scientific community due to its excellent physical and chemical properties, such as thermal/mechanical resistance, electronic stability, high Young's modulus, and fast mobility of charged atoms. In addition, other remarkable characteristics support its use in analytical chemistry, especially as sorbent. For these reasons, graphene-based materials (GBMs) have been used as a promising material in sample preparation. Graphene and graphene oxide, owing to their excellent physical and chemical properties as a large surface area, good mechanical strength, thermal stability, and delocalized π-electrons, are ideal sorbents, especially for molecules containing aromatic rings. They have been used in several sample preparation techniques such as solid-phase extraction (SPE), stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE), as well as in miniaturized modes as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) in their different configurations. However, the reduced size and weight of graphene sheets can limit their use since they commonly aggregate to each other, causing clogging in high-pressure extractive devices. One way to overcome it and other drawbacks consists of covalently attaching the graphene sheets to support materials (e.g., silica, polymers, and magnetically modified supports). Also, graphene-based materials can be further chemically modified to favor some interactions with specific analytes, resulting in more efficient hybrid sorbents with higher selectivity for specific chemical classes. As a result of this wide variety of graphene-based sorbents, several studies have shown the current potential of applying GBMs in different fields such as food, biological, pharmaceutical, and environmental applications. Within such a context, this review will focus on the last five years of achievements in graphene-based materials for sample preparation techniques highlighting their synthesis, chemical structure, and potential application for the extraction of target analytes in different complex matrices.

A flower-like hybrid material composed of Fe3O4, graphene oxide and CdSe nanodots for magnetic solid phase extraction of ibuprofen prior to its quantification by HPLC detection

A flower-like Fe₃O₄/GO/CdSe nanodot magnetic hybrid material was produced and applied to magnetic solid-phase extraction of ibuprofen from pharmaceuticals, water, and urine samples. The material was characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy and SEM-EDX. The pH value, volume of sample solution, amount of sorbent, type and volume of elution solvent and extraction time were optimized. Following elution with acetone, ibuprofen was quantified by HPLC-DAD detection. The recoveries of ibuprofen from spiked real samples ranged between 87 and 109%, and the intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations from 1.25 to 3.02%. The limit of detection, limit of quantification and preconcentration factor are 0.36 ng·mL^-1,1.20 ng·mL^-1 and 150, respectively.
