MIL-101(Fe)-derived magnetic porous carbon as sorbent for stir bar sorptive-dispersive microextraction of sulfonamides

Development of a magnetic nanocomposite sorbent (NiCoMn/Fe3O4@C) for efficient extraction of methylene blue and Auramine O

A rapid and efficient method for the simultaneous monitoring and recovery of Auramine O (AO) and Methylene Blue (MB) dyes from water samples is presented. This method, named ultrasound-assisted dispersive-magnetic nanocomposites-solid-phase microextraction (UA-DMN-μSPE), utilizes NiCoMn/Fe3O4@C composite sorbents. Response surface methodology (RSM) combined with artificial neural networks (ANN) and generalized regression artificial neural network (GRNN) under central composite design (CCD) was employed to optimize various parameters for efficient extraction, followed by further refinement using desirability function analysis (DFA) and genetic algorithms (GA). Under optimized conditions, the method achieved exceptional recovery rates (99.5 ± 1.2% for AO and 99.8 ± 1.1% for MB) with acetone as the eluent. Additionally, a high preconcentration factor of 45.50 and 47.30 for AO and MB, respectively, was obtained. Low detection limits of 0.45 ng mL⁻1 (AO) and 1.80 ng mL⁻1 (MB) were achieved with wide linear response ranges (5-1000 and 5-2000 ng mL⁻1 for AO and MB, respectively). The method exhibited good stability with RSDs below 3% for five recycling runs, and minimal interference from various ions was observed. This UA-DMN-μSPE-UV/Vis method offers significant advantages in terms of efficiency, preconcentration, and detection limits, making it a valuable tool for the analysis of AO and MB in water samples.

Simple, fast and eco-friendly micro-solid phase extraction based on thiol and ionic liquid bi-functional nanofibers membrane for the determination of sulfonamides in environmental water

BACKGROUND

Sulfonamides (SAs) are a class of synthetic antibacterial agents that are diffusely used in the medical industry and animal husbandry. Their prevalence in the influents and effluents of water treatment plants, as well as in rivers and groundwater, has provoked worldwide concern. Monitoring SAs in environmental water is of great significance for public health. However, most of the available detection techniques for SAs are cumbersome and time-consuming. With the increasing number of actual samples, simple, fast and environmentally friendly analytical methods are always in demand.

RESULTS

Herein, we describe a highly efficient micro-solid phase extraction (μ-SPE) sample preparation technique based on a novel thiol and ionic liquid bi-functional nanofibers membrane (IL-SH-PAN NFsM) for multi-residue detection of sulfonamides (SAs) in water samples. By the synergistic effect of -SH and -IL, the as-prepared IL-SH-PAN NFsM demonstrated high adsorption capacity and excellent selectivity for SAs. The water samples can be directly used for μ-SPE without pH and ionic strength adjustment, and the eluent can be directly collected for HPLC-MS/MS analysis. Compared with other methods reported in the literature, this method required much shorter extraction time (2 min for a batch), much less amount of adsorbent (4.0 mg) and organic solvent (0.5 mL), while providing much higher sensitivity (1.4-3.9 ng L-1), and fine recoveries (88.8%-117.7%) with relative standard deviations less than 4.26%.

SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY

A bi-functional nanofibers membrane was prepared for efficient extraction of SAs. The adsorbent exhibited superior adsorption performance and excellent selectivity. The underlying interaction mechanisms derived from -SH and -IL were proposed, which provide a new idea for preparing versatile adsorbents. Rapid, efficient and sensitive detection of SAs in water was achieved. The novel sample preparation technique can be expected as an efficient method for routine trace SAs residue monitoring in various water samples.

Polyaniline-co-polyindole functionalized magnetic porous carbon derived from MIL-53(Fe) for separation/enrichment of nitrophenols pollutants before determination with high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection

Herein, a novel polyaniline-co-polyindole functionalized magnetic porous carbon derived from MIL-53(Fe) was prepared and employed as an excellent nano-adsorbent to preconcentrate trace amounts of nitro-phenols in water and wastewater samples. Briefly, magnetic MIL-53(Fe) was synthesized by the addition of magnetite nanoparticles, terephthalic acid, and FeCl3 to the reaction medium. The magnetic MIL-53(Fe) was pyrolyzed under nitrogen protection to obtain a magnetic porous carbon nanocomposite, and finally, the nanomaterial was functionalized with polyaniline-co-polyindole via oxidation polymerization. The obtained nano-adsorbent was characterized via X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, and transmission and scanning electron microscopies. After that, the fabricated nano-material was utilized as an excellent nano-adsorbent for the preconcentration of trace nitro-phenols (2-nitrophenol, 4-nitrophenol, and 2,4-dinitrophenol) in environmental water, and wastewater samples. The detection limits were obtained from 0.1 to 0.15 μg/L after performing the optimization process. The new method was in the range of 0.4-300 μg/L. The proposed method exhibited a good precision from 3.2% to 9.6% for within-day assay, and 5.2%-13.2% for between-day assay at three concentration levels (1, 50, and 250 μg/L). Eventually, this method was utilized to preconcentrate/determine the target analytes in three water, and wastewater samples, satisfactory (relative standard deviations, 5.4%-9.3%; relative recovery, 88%-109%).

Synthesis of Metal–Organic Frameworks Quantum Dots Composites as Sensors for Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals

Hazardous chemical compounds such as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are widespread and part of the materials we use daily. Among these compounds, bisphenol A (BPA) is the most common endocrine-disrupting chemical and is prevalent due to the chemical raw materials used to manufacture thermoplastic polymers, rigid foams, and industrial coatings. General exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals constitutes a serious health hazard, especially to reproductive systems, and can lead to transgenerational diseases in adults due to exposure to these chemicals over several years. Thus, it is necessary to develop sensors for early detection of endocrine-disrupting chemicals. In recent years, the use of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as sensors for EDCs has been explored due to their distinctive characteristics, such as wide surface area, outstanding chemical fastness, structural tuneability, gas storage, molecular separation, proton conductivity, and catalyst activity, among others which can be modified to sense hazardous environmental pollutants such as EDCs. In order to improve the versatility of MOFs as sensors, semiconductor quantum dots have been introduced into the MOF pores to form metal–organic frameworks/quantum dots composites. These composites possess a large optical absorption coefficient, low toxicity, direct bandgap, formidable sensing capacity, high resistance to change under light and tunable visual qualities by varying the size and compositions, which make them useful for applications as sensors for probing of dangerous and risky environmental contaminants such as EDCs and more. In this review, we explore various synthetic strategies of (MOFs), quantum dots (QDs), and metal–organic framework quantum dots composites (MOFs@QDs) as efficient compounds for the sensing of ecological pollutants, contaminants, and toxicants such as EDCs. We also summarize various compounds or materials used in the detection of BPA as well as the sensing ability and capability of MOFs, QDs, and MOFs@QDs composites that can be used as sensors for EDCs and BPA.

Development of magnetic molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry for rapid and selective determination of urinary diphenyl phosphate of college students

Organophosphate esters (OPEs), known as novel alternative flame retardants, are a class of environmental endocrine disruptors. Long-term exposure to OPEs may bring a non-negligible health risk to human. Urinary OPE metabolites (mOPEs) are generally used as biomarkers to evaluate the internal exposure to OPEs. Diphenyl phosphate (DPHP), the main metabolite of aryl-OPEs, exhibited high detection rates and concentrations in urine samples. To establish a selective and simple analytical method for biomonitoring urinary DPHP, a specific magnetic molecular imprinted polymer (MMIP) was fabricated via a sol-gel method. Under optimum magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) conditions, the resultant MMIP exhibited selective recognition ability, ideal adsorption capacity and good reusability on urinary DPHP enrichment. The developed MSPE method coupled with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (U-HPLC-MS/MS) exhibited good precision and accuracy (spiked recoveries of 85.8%-109% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranged from 5.1%-13%), low detection limit of 0.035 ng/mL, and negligible matrix inhibition. Then we used this proposed method to detect urinary DPHP levels of recruited 30 college students and investigate the time variability and potential determinants. All urine samples revealed the presence of DPHP at a median concentration of 0.56 μg/g Creatinine (Cr). Moderate reproducibility of DPHP level was observed in first morning urine samples (ICC>0.40). Significant correlations were found between urinary DPHP levels and gender (β=0.72; 95% CI: 0.48∼0.96), sampling time (β=0.36; 95% CI: 0.08∼0.65) as well as the frequency for take-out food (β=0.45; 95% CI: 0.07∼0.74) (p< 0.05). Hence, a fast and sensitive MSPE-U-HPLC-MS/MS method was successfully built to quantify urinary DPHP.

Porous Hexagonal Boron Nitride as Solid-Phase Microextraction Coating Material for Extraction and Preconcentration of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Soil Sample

Sample pretreatment plays important role in the analysis and detection of trace pollutants in complex matrices, such as environmental and biological samples. The adsorption materials of sample pretreatment receive considerable attention, which has a significant effect on the sensitivity and selectivity of the analytical method. In this work, the porous hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) was utilized as a coating material of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) to extract and preconcentrate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) prior to separation and detection with GC-FID. Attributed to the multiple interactions including hydrophobicity, hydrogen bonding and strong π–π interaction, the h-BN coating showed excellent extraction performance for PAHs. Under the optimal conditions, the method showed the linear relationship in the range of 0.1–50 ng mL⁻¹ for acenaphthene, 0.05–50 ng mL⁻¹ for pyrene, and 0.02–50 ng mL⁻¹ for fluorene, phenanthrene and anthracene with a correlation coefficient (R²) not lower than 0.9910. The enrichment factors were achieved between 1526 and 4398 for PAHs with h-BN as SPME fiber coating. The detection limits were obtained in the range of 0.004–0.033 ng mL⁻¹, which corresponds to 0.08–0.66 ng g⁻¹ for soil. The method was successfully applied to analysis of real soil samples. The recoveries were determined between 78.0 and 120.0% for two soil samples. The results showed that h-BN material provided a promising alternative in sample pretreatment and analysis.

3D printed spinning cup-shaped device for immunoaffinity solid-phase extraction of diclofenac in wastewaters

This article reports current research efforts towards designing bespoke microscale extraction approaches exploiting the versatility of 3D printing for fast prototyping of novel geometries of sorptive devices. This is demonstrated via the so-called 3D printed spinning cup-based platform for immunoextraction of emerging contaminants using diclofenac as a model analyte. A new format of rotating cylindrical scaffold (containing a semispherical upper cavity) with enhanced coverage of biorecognition elements, and providing elevated enhancement factors with no need of eluate processing as compared with other microextraction stirring units is proposed. Two distinct synthetic routes capitalized upon modification of the acrylate surface of stereolithographic 3D printed parts with hexamethylenediamine or branched polyethyleneimine chemistries were assayed for covalent binding of monoclonal diclofenac antibody.

Under the optimized experimental conditions, a LOD of 108 ng L⁻¹ diclofenac, dynamic linear range of 0.4–1,500 µg L^–1, and enrichment factors > 83 (for near-exhaustive extraction) were obtained using liquid chromatography coupled with UV–Vis detection. The feasibility of the antibody-laden device for handling of complex samples was demonstrated with the analysis of raw influent wastewaters with relative recoveries ranging from 102 to 109%. By exploiting stereolithographic 3D printing, up to 36 midget devices were fabricated in a single run with an estimated cost of mere 0.68 euros per 3D print and up to 16 €/device after the incorporation of the monoclonal antibody.
