Abstract
Background Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS) methods have been widely used to assess estimated bone density. This study aimed to assess changes in estimated bone density in association with changes in body composition, physical activity, and anthropometry. Methods We examined changes in anthropometry, body composition, and physical activity associated with changes in estimated bone mineral density (measured using quantitative ultrasound with a heel ultrasound device indicating broadband ultrasound attenuation BUA and speed of sound SOS) in a follow-up sample of n = 73 young men at the beginning and again 18 weeks later at the end of basic military training. Results At the end of the basic training, the subjects were on average significantly heavier (+1.0%), slightly taller (+0.5%) and had a higher fat mass (+6.6%) and grip strength (+8.6%). A significant decrease in mean physical activity (-49.5%) and mean estimated bone density calculated with BUA (-7.5%) was observed in the paired t-test. The results of the multivariable linear regressions (backward selection) show that changes in skeletal muscle mass (delta = 2nd measurement minus 1st measurement) have negative and body weight (delta) have positive association with the speed of sound SOS (delta), while fat mass (delta) and physical activity (delta) had the strongest negative associations with estimated bone mineral density (delta). In particular, we found a negative association between fat mass (delta) and estimated bone mineral density (delta, estimated with BUA). Conclusion Our study suggests that estimated bone density from the calcaneus can change within a few months even in young and mostly healthy individuals, depending upon physical activity levels and other co-factors. Further studies including other troop types as control groups as well as on women should follow in order to investigate this public health relevant topic in more depth. To what extent the estimated bone density measurement with quantitative ultrasound is clinically relevant needs to be investigated in further studies.

Abstract
Background: Optimal bone health is vital in children to prevent osteoporosis later in life, and body composition plays a crucial role in it. However, the literature reports contradictory results when considering the relationship between body composition and bone health in children. This study aimed to examine the bone health and its relationship with body composition in Malaysian schoolchildren. Methods: In this cross sectional study, body composition data (weight, height, body fat percentage [% fat], fat mass, fat free mass, visceral fat, waist circumference [WC] and body mass index-for-age [BMI z-score]) and bone health data (Z-score and broadband ultrasound attenuation [BUA]) were collected from 415 schoolchildren aged 9–12 years, cluster sampled from randomly selected primary schools in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Results: Girls generally had significantly higher height, body fat percentage, fat mass, visceral fat and Z-score as compared to boys. A steady increase of the mean BUA value was observed with increasing age in both sexes. The mean BUA value of the present study across the population was significantly higher than that of schoolchildren from Nigeria (p < 0.001), Colombia (p < 0.001) and Spain (p = 0.002). Significant positive correlations were found between all the body composition variables and bone outcome variables across the population. Further, BUA was significantly correlated with weight (β = 0.172; p = 0.001), height (β = 0.299; p < 0.001), % fat (β = 0.131; p = 0.007), fat mass (β = 0.130; p = 0.007), fat free mass (β = 0.209; p < 0.001), visceral fat (β = 0.127, p = 0.008), WC (β = 0.165; p = 0.001) and BMI z-score (β = 0.162; p = 0.001), after controlling for sex, age and ethnicity. Similarly, after confounders adjusted, Z-score was significantly predicted by weight (β = 0.160; p = 0.001), height (β = 0.310; p < 0.001), % fat (β = 0.104; p = 0.032), fat mass (β = 0.107; p = 0.026), fat free mass (β = 0.218; p < 0.001), visceral fat (β = 0.107, p = 0.026), WC (β = 0.145; p = 0.002) and BMI z-score (β = 0.150; p = 0.002). Conclusions: Our findings have revealed that body composition variables were positive correlated with bone outcome variables, suggesting that adipose tissue acts to stimulate bone growth. Further clinical and molecular studies in the future is recommended to fully illustrate the complex interactions between adiposity and bone health.

Plasma Fatty Acids and Quantitative Ultrasound, DXA and pQCT Derived Parameters in Postmenopausal Spanish Women. Nutrients 2021; 13:nu13051454. Abstract
Different factors may contribute to the development of osteopenia or osteoporosis. Fatty acids are key nutrients for health, and a number of studies have reported an association between bone mineral density (BMD) and fatty acid intake. We aimed to investigate the relationships between serum levels of different fatty acids and bone parameters determined by quantitative bone ultrasound (QUS), peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT), and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in a sample of Spanish postmenopausal women. We enrolled a total of 301 postmenopausal women (median age 59 years; interquartile range (IQR) 7) in this study. All participants underwent full densitometric screening, including calcaneal quantitative ultrasound (QUS), peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT), and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), as well as plasma fatty acid measurement. After adjustment for potential confounders, plasma n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels correlated with BMD in the spine (r = 0.150; p = 0.014) and femoral neck (r = 0.143; p = 0.019). By multiple linear regression, an independent statistically significant positive relationship was observed between BMD in the spine and BMI (β = 0.288; p = 0.001) as well as total plasma n-3 PUFAs (β = 0.155; p = 0.009). The plasma n-3 PUFA level was also a significant and positive predictor of BMD at the femoral neck (β = 0.146; p = 0.009). Independent risk factors for low BMD (T-score ≤ 1) were determined by logistic regression analysis, and a relatively high level of plasma n-3 PUFAs (OR = 0.751; 95% CI 0.587-0.960, p = 0.022) was identified as a protective factor against low bone mass. In this single-center sample of Spanish postmenopausal women, we reported a significant positive and statistically independent association between BMD and plasma levels of n-3 PUFAs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lower habitual physical activity in adolescents with visual impairment (VI) have detrimental effect on their general health such as bone quality and physical fitness. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the bone quality in children with VI and to analyze the correlations of their bone characteristics with anthropometric and physical fitness tests. METHODS The participants (N=38) were adolescents (14.85±2.79yrs) with low vision (n=18) or blindness (n=20). Dual-energy-X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) was used to measure bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC) of the total body and L1-L4 of the lumbar spinal region. After anthropometry physical fitness was examined by laboratory test (VO2peak) and field tests (strength and running). RESULTS Height, weight, body mass index (BMI), VO2peak were similar in the two groups. Blind boys showed significant higher handgrip strength. Estimated VO2peak (from 20-m shuttle running test) was significantly lower in blind children (43.84±4.42ml/kg/min) than in children with low vision (35.08±5.23ml/kg/min;p<0.001). BMD and BMC did not differ in subgroups, Z-score of total body BMD was significantly lower in blind children. Means of Z-score in L1-L4 lumbal spinal region were negative values and similar in blind and low vision adolescents' subgroups. A linear regression model in the collective group revealed significant associations of BMD (r2=0.538;p=0.0001) and BMC (r2=0.698;p=0.048) with BMI and handgrip strength test. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents with VI have generally decreased bone health and physical fitness level. BMI and handgrip strength are predictors of total body BMD and BMC. Suggesting that these measures may be adequate to estimate bone health.

Skeletal status assessed by quantitative ultrasound and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in children with inflammatory bowel disease: A 2-year prospective study. Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the bone status in children with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) using quantitative ultrasound (QUS) measurement and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at baseline and after two years of adequate treatment of the IBD and bone protection medication. METHODS Sixteen children (six boys) with IBD, aged 13.4±2.4 years, were examined at baseline and two years later. DXA was used to asses bone mineral density (BMD) and reference data were provided by the device's manufacturer (Hologic Explorer). QUS measurements were performed in patients and controls - 48 healthy children. RESULTS Mean Z-scores for TB- and s-BMD were significantly below zero for both, baseline and follow-up (-2.61±0.99 and -2.48±0.88 for TB, and -1.83±1.33 and -1.61±1.19 for s-BMD, respectively), and did not differ significantly, as well as mean Ad-SoS Z-score. The changes in time of TB Z-score and body weight Z-score correlated positively (r=0.63; P<0.01). The QUS results did not differ between patients and controls. There was a negative correlation between the baseline nutritional status and the activity of the disease, as well as of the number of flares before the enrolment and Ad-SoS Z-score. CONCLUSIONS BMD was found to be lowered both at baseline and follow-up. No further deterioration was observed during 2-year follow-up. Proper treatment, defined as treatment following ECCO Guidelines, may allow to keep a similar trend in the development of bone tissue as in healthy children. The bone properties assessed by QUS method did not differ between patients and controls. QUS at hand phalanges appears not to be proper diagnostic tool in IBD children.

Abstract
Fat mass (FM) and fat free mass (FFM) may influence bone health differentially. However, existing evidences on associations between FM, FFM and bone health are inconsistent and vary according to sex and maturity. The present study aims to evaluate longitudinal associations between FM, FFM and bone stiffness index (SI) among European children and adolescents with 6 years follow-up. A sample of 2468 children from the IDEFICS/I.Family was included, with repeated measurements of SI using calcaneal quantitative ultrasound, body composition using skinfold thickness, sedentary behaviors and physical activity using self-administrated questionnaires. Regression coefficients (β) and 99%-confidence intervals (99% CI) were calculated by sex-specified generalized linear mixed effects models to analyze the longitudinal associations between FM and FFM z-scores (zFM and zFFM) and SI percentiles, and to explore the possible interactions between zFM, zFFM and maturity. Baseline zFFM was observed to predict the change in SI percentiles in both boys (β = 4.57, 99% CI: 1.36, 7.78) and girls (β = 3.42, 99% CI: 0.05, 6.79) after 2 years. Moreover, baseline zFFM (β = 8.72, 99% CI: 3.18, 14.27 in boys and β = 5.89, 99% CI: 0.34, 11.44 in girls) and the change in zFFM (β = 6.58, 99% CI: 0.83, 12.34 in boys and β = 4.81, 99% CI: -0.41, 10.02 in girls) were positively associated with the change in SI percentiles after 6 years. In contrast, a negative association was observed between the change in zFM and SI percentiles in boys after 6 years (β = -3.70, 99% CI: -6.99, -0.42). Besides, an interaction was observed between the change in zFM and menarche on the change in SI percentiles in girls at 6 years follow-up (p = .009), suggesting a negative association before menarche while a positive association after menarche. Our findings support the existing evidences for a positive relationship between FFM and SI during growth. Furthermore, long-term FM gain was inversely associated with SI in boys, whereas opposing associations were observed across menarche in girls.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Osteoporosis is one of the non-communicable diseases linked to urbanisation. The foundation of osteoporotic fractures stems from childhood. Therefore, studies that promote maximising peak bone mass are strongly advocated. Studies have shown that there are differences in the incidence of osteoporotic fractures in rural and urban communities. No study has investigated urban-rural differences in BMD of Nigerian children. This study, therefore, aimed to investigate urban-rural differences in BMD of Nigerian children and the association with physical activity, demographic and anthropometric variables. METHODS In a cross-sectional, study in Enugu, Nigeria, estimated bone mineral density (eBMD) was measured at the calcaneum using the QUS densitometer, Hologic Sahara, in 457 urban (Enugu metropolis) and 559 rural (Nsukka community) children aged 6-14 years. Height, weight and physical activity were measured. Independent sample t-test was used for comparative analysis while Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression models were used to examine the relationship between the eBMD and the other parameters. RESULTS The mean (S.D) eBMD of the urban children [0.52(0.09) g/cm2] were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than their age- and gender-matched counterparts in the rural areas [0.51(0.08) g/cm2]. Age and weight predicted (p < 0.05) the eBMD in the urban subjects while only age was the predictor (p < 0.05) in the rural subjects. The physical activity pattern had no relationship with eBMD in both urban and rural children in Enugu, Nigeria. CONCLUSIONS The eBMD of rural children is lower than that of their age- and gender-matched urban counterparts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of our study was to establish a reference database of calcaneal broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) and the speed of sound (SOS) in a healthy Nigerian population of children aged 6 to 14 years and also to investigate the influence of sociodemographic and anthropometric variables on them. METHODS The BUA and SOS of 1016 healthy children were measured by quantitative ultrasound densitometry. Height and weight were measured with a stadiometer and weighing balance, respectively, whereas the sociodemographic parameters of the participants were collected on a semistructured questionnaire. A multiple regression model using stepwise selection and Pearson correlation coefficients were used to examine the relationship between the ultrasound parameters and sociodemographic and anthropometric parameters. Comparisons between various age groups were made by analysis of variance. RESULTS The mean BUA and SOS ± SD of the participants were 60.57 ± 16.21 dB/MHz and 1563.48 ± 21.74 m/s, respectively, for boys and 58.18 ± 15.16 dB/MHz and 1560.03 ± 22.32 m/s for girls. The BUA in both sexes was positively influenced by age and weight (P < .05), whereas only the father's educational status was its predictor (P < .05) in the boys. For the girls, the family size and mother's educational status were predictors of the BUA (P < .05). The SOS was marginally influenced by age and family size in the boys (P < .05), whereas the father's educational status was the predictor in the girls. CONCLUSIONS The established BUA and SOS values in this study are baseline values, and further study, which would also involve data from a large number of Nigerian children, would be needed to support their effectiveness as reference values.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Physical activity (PA) and adequate macro- and micronutrient intake have favourable influence on the bone status. The aim of this study was to analyse the relationships among PA, anthropometric data, dietary intake and ultrasound bone characteristics in children. METHODS 10-12 years old Hungarian children (N = 123, 59 girls, 64 boys) provided physical activity, diet, anthropometric and bone data. PA was measured with accelerometer (Actigraph GT3X+). Diet was evaluated with three-day, 24-hour food recall. Calcaneal quantitative ultrasound (QUS) bone parameters were registered with Sonost3000 bone densitometer. RESULTS Nutrition and anthropometry did not differ by gender. The values of broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) were significantly higher in boys. Girls spent significantly more time being sedentary, boys had greater light, moderate, vigorous, and moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) levels. The children accumulated more than twice the suggested amount of public health guidelines for MVPA. QUS parameters correlated significantly with vigorous physical activity in boys, and with age, height, weight, fat percentage, and body mass index (BMI) for both genders. There was no significant relationship between nutrition and QUS; however, inadequate vitamin K intake correlated with less favourable bone parameters. Multiple linear regression analysis confirmed the importance of vigorous PA - speed of sound (SOS): β = 0.358, p = 0.006; BUA: β = 0.340, p = 0.007; bone quality index (BQI): β = 0.377, p = 0.002; vitamin K intake - SOS: β = 0.256, p = 0.025; BUA: β = 0.235, p = 0.033; BQI: β = 0.295, p = 0.007; BMI - SOS: β = 0.207, p = 0.064; BUA: β = 0.455, p < 0.001; BQI: β = 0.284, p = 0.008; and age - SOS: β = 0.450, p < 0.001; BUA: β = 0.318, p = 0.004; BQI: β = 0.444, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Changes in the characteristics of ultrasound bone parameters among 10-12 years old children mainly depended on the amount of intense PA, adequate vitamin K intake and anthropometric variables related to age.

Abstract
Maximizing bone mineral accrual to attain an optimal peak bone mass (PBM), particularly during adolescence, appears to be an effective protective strategy in the prevention of osteoporosis. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of physical activity (PA), fat mass (FM), lean mass (LM), body mass index (BMI), calcium, or combination of vitamin D supplement intake, smoking and alcohol drinking status on bone health assessed by calcaneus quantitative ultrasound (QUS) in a healthy adolescent population. The participants comprised of 920 male and female secondary school adolescents aged 15–17 years old. Quantitative ultrasound measurements of the left heel were performed using Lunar Achilles EX II, which included results of broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA), speed of sound (SOS), and a calculated stiffness index (SI). Multivariable linear regression analyses revealed that—PA was positively associated with all three QUS indices in both genders; BMI was positively associated with SI and SOS in females; LM was positively associated with BUA in both genders; and FM was negatively associated with SI in females. These variables accounted for 32.1%, 21.2% and 29.4% of females’ SOS, BUA and SI variances (p<0.001), respectively and 23.6%, 15.4% and 17.2% of males’ SOS, BUA and SI variances (p<0.001), respectively. Promoting health benefits from physical activity could influence bone status and consequently improve PBM, which is a potent protective determinant against osteoporosis in adulthood.

Abstract
Olive oil has been demonstrated to enhance various cardiometabolic risk factors. However, to our knowledge, the association between olive oil intake and cortical and trabecular bone microarchitecture has never been evaluated in Spanish women. We aimed to examine the association between olive oil intake and cortical and trabecular bone microarchitecture. We analyzed 523 women aged 50 (9) year, range (23–81) year. Participants underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and peripheral quantitative computed tomography scans. Dietary intake of calcium, vitamin D, energy and olive oil (g/day) were assessed by a self-administered food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). After adjustment for potential confounding factors (calcium (mg/day), vitamin D (μg/day) energy (Kcal/day), age, body mass index (BMI) (kg/m2), menopausal status, and osteoporotic diagnosis (normal, osteopenia, or osteoporosis)), there were significant increases in volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) (mg/cm3) (p < 0.01) in the group with a higher intake of olive oil. Total, trabecular and cortical bone density were positively correlated with olive oil intake. The dietary intake of olive oil was significantly associated with vBMD in multiple regression analysis; total density: olive oil intake (g/day) standardized β = 0.185 (p < 0.001), trabecular density: olive oil intake (g/day) standardized β = 0.186 (p < 0.001) and cortical density olive oil intake (g/day) standardized β = 0.114 (p = 0.008). We conclude that the dietary intake of olive oil is positively associated with a better vBMD in Spanish women.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the associations between adiposity, muscular fitness (MF), diet, sun exposure, and physical activity profiles as surrogate measures with bone health status in a sample of schoolchildren aged 8-18 yr old. A total of 250 Egyptian schoolchildren aged 8-18 yr were randomly invited to participate in these cross-sectional survey analyses. Calcaneal broadband ultrasound attenuation (c-BUA), bone mineral density (BMD), and bone formation markers (total calcium, serum bone alkaline phosphatase, and osteocalcin) were measured as markers of bone health. Adiposity profile, MF, physical activity (PA), sun exposure, Ca, and vitamin D dietary intake as related cofactors of bone health were measured by using prevalidated questionnaires and standard analytical techniques. A total of 85% (n = 213) of the study population showed normal bone health and 14.8% (n = 37) had abnormal bone health; most of them are girls (67.6%) classified according to BMD and c-BUA Z-scores into osteopenia (9.6%) and osteoporosis (5.2%). Compared with boys, higher correlations between c-BUA, bone mineral content, and BMD measures in the femoral neck, lumbar spine, whole body, and bone markers were reported in girls with lower bone mass. There was a positive significant correlation between body mass index, adiposity, sun exposure, MF, PA status, Ca and vitamin D intake, and c-BUA and BMD score analyses. These parameters were shown to be associated with about ~57.3%-88.4% of bone health characteristics of children and adolescents with osteopenia and osteoporosis. In children and adolescents, sun exposure, Ca and vitamin D diets, adiposity, PA, and changes in the levels of Ca, osteocalcin, and serum bone alkaline phosphatase were shown to be associated with bone health. Also, a significant correlation was reported between c-BUA score, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry-BMD measures, and bone markers at clinically important bone sites of girls and boys. However, further clinical trials should be studied to consider c-BUA and bone markers as the benchmark estimates of bone mass for diagnostic purposes in young ages.

Abstract
The regular consumption of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCO3-PUFAs) results in general health benefits. The intake of LCO3-PUFAs has been reported to contribute to bone metabolism. We aimed to investigate the relationships between dietary intakes of LCO3-PUFAs and bone mineral density (BMD) in Spanish women aged 20-79 years old. A total of 1865 female subjects (20-79 years old) were enrolled, and lumbar (L2, L3, L3 and total spine), hip (femoral neck (FN), femoral trochanter (FT) and Ward's triangle (WT)) bone mineral density (BMD) were measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Dietary intakes of total energy, calcium, vitamin D, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and n-6 fatty acids (linoleic acid (LA) and arachidonic acid (AA)) were assessed by a self-administered food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Spearman's rank correlations between LCO3-PUFAs and BMD were estimated. Partial correlations controlling for age, weight, height, dietary calcium, vitamin D, menopausal status and energy were calculated. A multiple regression analysis was computed to assess significant associations with BMD in this population. After adjustment for potential confounding factors, there were positive correlations between ALA, EPA and DHA intake and BMD. According to the WHO diagnosis criteria for osteoporosis, in this population of normal and osteopenic women, the dietary intake of ALA was also significantly associated with BMD at the hip. In normal women, the dietary intake of DHA was also significantly associated with BMD at the lumbar spine. No significant associations between LCO3-PUFAs and BMD were detected in the lumbar spine of osteopenic or osteoporotic women. The dietary intake of LCO3-PUFAs was positively associated with BMD in Spanish women at both the hips and the lumbar spine. We highlight that the intake of LCO3-PUFAs is not significantly associated with BMD in osteoporotic women; however, the intake of LCO3-PUFAs seems to be positively associated with BMD at both the hips and the lumbar spine in normal and osteopenic women.

Abstract
The bone is one of the relevant target organs of heavy metals, and heavy metal toxicity is associated with several degenerative processes, such osteoporosis and bone mineral alterations, that could lead to fractures. We aimed to study a presumed relationship between bone density, evaluated by quantitative bone ultrasound (QUS), dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) and the dietary intake of cadmium, lead and mercury in healthy premenopausal women. A total of 158 healthy, non-smoking, premenopausal women were incorporated into the study. A validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was administered to assess intake during the preceding seven days. The median predicted dietary cadmium intake among the 158 women studied was 25.29 μg/day (18.62–35.00) and 2.74 μg/kg body weight/week (b.w./w) (1.92–3.83). Dietary lead intake was 43.85 μg/day (35.09–51.45) and 4.82 μg/kg b.w./w (3.67–6.13). The observed dietary mercury intake was 9.55 μg/day (7.18–13.57) and 1.02 μg/kg b.w./w (0.71–1.48). Comparisons, in terms of heavy metal intake, showed no significant results after further adjusting for energy intake. No statistically significant correlations between heavy metal intake and the QUS, DXA and pQCT parameters were observed. Levels of dietary exposure of cadmium, lead and mercury were mostly within the recommendations. We did not find associations between the QUS, DXA and pQCT parameters and the dietary intake of the studied heavy metals in healthy premenopausal women.

Abstract
Backround: Osteoporosis is a common disease and physical activity (PA) has a favourable influence on bone status. AIM To establish normative data for calcaneal quantitative ultrasound (QUS) bone characteristics in children and to analyse the relationships between PA, anthropometric and bone parameters. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Hungarian children aged 7-19 (n = 2674; 1325 girls, 1349 boys) provided PA, anthropometric and bone data. QUS parameters were registered with Sonost3000 densitometer (speed of sound: SOS, m/s; broadband ultrasound attenuation: BUA, dB/MHz; bone quantity index (BQI = αSOS + βBUA). Reference centiles of QUS parameters were constructed by LMS method. Multivariate linear regression models were used to analyse the relationships. RESULTS QUS bone parameters increased with age. There were no gender differences, except in 11- and 19-year-old children, where boys showed higher values. SOS (1497.15 ± 15.72 vs 1494.05 ± 14.81 m/s) and BQI (65.31 ± 16.71 vs 62.26 ± 15.78) were higher in athletic children. The regression model revealed significant relations between SOS and age, relative muscle mass and PA; BUA correlated with gender, morphological age, BMI, relative muscle mass and PA. CONCLUSIONS Changes in the bone parameters among 7-19-year-old Hungarian children depended on age, anthropometric dimensions and the level of PA. The normative data could be used for monitoring QUS bone parameters in children, leading to more effective interventions for healthy bones.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The quantitative ultrasound (QUS) method has been recognized as an optimal screening tool for assessing bone mass status. The aim of this study was to provide standardized values for bone health status measured by the QUS technique based on age, sex, and body mass index (BMI). METHODS The study population consisted of 1322 healthy individuals (822 females and 500 males) aged 14-25 years. Bone mass in both calcaneus was estimated with QUS to obtain Broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) (dB/MHz). RESULTS The linear models revealed statistically significant differences between bone mass status of the calcaneus and age, sex, and BMI (P < .001). Bone mass increased at a rate of approximately 0.015 units per year after the age of 14 and these values increased in approximately 0.1 units in males in comparison to females. There was an increase of approximately 0.17 units for each increase in categories of BMI. CONCLUSION It is crucial to provide standardized values for the QUS parameter in young males and females to allow reliable comparisons and evaluate trends in preventive programs that may enable the identification of individuals at risk for osteoporosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium, and mercury, are absorbed through contaminated food sources and water. Few studies have investigated the extent to which dietary heavy metals are associated with low bone mineral density. AIMS We aimed to characterize the dietary intake of the heavy metals lead, cadmium and mercury among healthy, non-smoking postmenopausal women in Spain. Furthermore, we sought to establish a putative relationship between bone health and the intake of these heavy metals in this population. STUDY DESIGN The daily intake of the heavy metals considered for the different food groups was calculated by accounting for food content and consumption in 281 postmenopausal women. Bone measurements were performed using a Quantitative Bone Ultrasound (QUS), a Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) and a Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (pQCT). RESULTS The average estimated dietary cadmium exposure among the 281 women studied was 29.87 μg/day (20.41-41.04) and 3.03 μg/kg body weight (b.w.; 2.17-4.40). Dietary lead exposure was 46.24 μg/day (38.11-54.77) and 4.87 μg/kg b.w. (4.00-6.14). The estimated dietary mercury exposure was 11.64 μg/day and 1.19 μg/kg b.w. (0.82-1.76). Participants were classified according to their heavy metal intake (above or below the respective medians). After further adjustment for potential confounding factors, no significant differences were found in all the measured parameters (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS We did not find associations between bone health and the dietary intake of three heavy metals in postmenopausal women. Dietary intake of the measured heavy metals were within the recommended values.

Abstract
The objective of the present study is to investigate the relationships between body composition, nutritional profile, muscular fitness (MF) and bone health in a sample of children and adolescents from Colombia. Participants included 1118 children and adolescents (54.6% girls). Calcaneal broadband ultrasound attenuation (c-BUA) was obtained as a marker of bone health. Body composition (fat mass and lean mass) was assessed using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Furthermore height, weight, waist circumference and Tanner stage were measured and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Standing long-jump (SLJ) and isometric handgrip dynamometry were used respectively as indicators of lower and upper body muscular fitness. A muscular index score was also computed by summing up the standardised values of both SLJ and handgrip strength. Dietary intake and degree of adherence to the Mediterranean diet were assessed by a 7-day recall questionnaire for food frequency and the Kidmed questionnaire. Poor bone health was considered using a z-score cut off of ≤-1.5 standard deviation. Once the results were adjusted for age and Tanner stage, the predisposing factors of having a c-BUA z-score ≤-1.5 standard deviation included being underweight or obese, having an unhealthy lean mass, having an unhealthy fat mass, SLJ performance, handgrip performance, and unhealthy muscular index score. In conclusion, body composition (fat mass and lean body mass) and MF both influenced bone health in a sample of children and adolescents from Colombia. Thus promoting strength adaptation and preservation in Colombian youth will help to improve bone health, an important protective factor against osteoporosis in later life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The calcaneus is the bone of the foot that first receives the impact of running, generating vibrations that might have a positive effect in modifying the trabecular bone mass. The objective of this study was to determine the variation in calcaneal bone density in runners during a 6-month training season, comparing it with a control sample. METHODS Bone density of the heel was measured in 33 male recreational runners by means of a contact ultrasonic bone analyzer. Measurements were made on three occasions during a training season: at the beginning, at 350 km, and at 700 km. All of the runners wore the same model of running shoes during this period. Measurements of bone density were also made in a control sample of 62 men who did not engage in physical exercise. RESULTS There was a significant decrease in mean calcaneal bone density over the course of the training season (from 86.1 dB/MHz to 83.2 dB/MHz; P = .006), but no significant differences with the control sample value (from 80.7 dB/MHz to 81.1 dB/MHz; P = .314). The runners' body composition changed during the study period, with lean mass increasing and fat mass decreasing. CONCLUSIONS Distance running seems to have a negative effect on calcaneal bone mass density during the course of a 700-km training season.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) has been found to be a safe and reliable method for evaluating bone mineral density (BMD). Using calcaneal QUS techniques, the current study contributes to remedying this gap in the literature by establishing normative data among children and adolescents from Colombia. INTRODUCTION Minimal data on BMD changes are available from populations in developing countries. BMD reference values for children and adolescents have not been published for a Latin-American population. The aim of this study was to establish a normal reference range of calcaneal broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) in Colombian children and adolescents with ages ranging from 9 to 17.9 years. METHODS A sample of 1001 healthy Colombian youth (boys n = 445 and girls n = 556), children, and adolescents (9-17.9 years old) participated in the study. A calcaneus QUS parameter (BUA) was obtained for boys and girls, stratified by age group. Furthermore, height, weight, fat mass percentage, and body mass index were measured. Centile smoothed curves for the third, tenth, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, and 97th percentiles were calculated using the LMS method (L [curve Box-Cox], M [curve median], and S [curve coefficient of variation]). RESULTS Mean (± SD) values for the participants' anthropometric data were 12.9 ± 2.3 years of age, 45.2 ± 11.5 kg weight, 1.51 ± 0.1 m height, 19.5 ± 3.1 kg/m(2) BMI, and 69.5 ± 17.1 dB/MHz BUA. Overall, all variables were significantly higher in boys except in BMI and body fat percentage. Girls generally had higher mean calcaneal BUA (dB/MHz) values than the boys, except in the age ranges 16 and 17.9, p > 0.05. In addition, the BUA (dB/MHz) increased with age throughout childhood and adolescence and reached a plateau by age 15-17.9 for girls. CONCLUSIONS For the first time, our results provide sex- and age-specific BUA reference values for Colombian children and adolescents aged 9-17.9 years. A more specific set of reference values is useful for clinicians and researchers and informs clinical practice to monitor bone mineral status.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the main factors that influence bone mass in children and teenagers
assessed by quantitative ultrasound (QUS) of the phalanges. Data source: A systematic literature review was performed according to the PRISMA method with
searches in databases Pubmed/Medline, SciELO and Bireme for the period 2001-2012,
in English and Portuguese languages, using the keywords: children, teenagers,
adolescent, ultrasound finger phalanges, quantitative ultrasound of phalanges,
phalangeal quantitative ultrasound. Data synthesis: 21 articles were included. Girls had, in QUS, Amplitude Dependent Speed of Sound
(AD-SoS) values higher than boys during pubertal development. The values of the
parameters of QUS of the phalanges and dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA)
increased with the increase of the maturational stage. Anthropometric variables
such as age, weight, height, body mass index (BMI), lean mass showed positive
correlations with the values of QUS of the phalanges. Physical activity has also
been shown to be positively associated with increased bone mass. Factors such as
ethnicity, genetics, caloric intake and socioeconomic profile have not yet shown a
conclusive relationship and need a larger number of studies. Conclusions: QUS of the phalanges is a method used to evaluate the progressive acquisition of
bone mass during growth and maturation of individuals in school phase, by
monitoring changes that occur with increasing age and pubertal stage. There were
mainly positive influences variables of sex, maturity, height, weight and BMI,
with similar data when compared to the gold standard method, the DXA.

Abstract
Aim. To provide bone status assessment in infancy using quantitative ultrasound (QUS) applied to second metacarpus. Methods. 103 healthy term infants and 3 patients with rickets, aged ≤ 12 months, underwent metacarpal QUS evaluation using QUS DBM Sonic Aurora IGEA (MO, Italy), which measures speed of sound (mcSOS) and bone transmission time (mcBTT). Results. In the total sample, median (interquartile range) of mcSOS was 1640.00 (26.0) m/s and mcBTT 0.82 (0.21) µs. Moreover, reference values for age were obtained based on estimation of the lower and upper percentiles. We observed a statistical significant difference between groups of age for mcSOS (p = 0.016). In a multiple linear regression model, we found a relation between age at enrolment and mcSOS (β = −0.608; p = 0.000) and mcBTT (β = −0.819; p = 0.001). A positive correlation between mcSOS and mcBTT has been observed (r = 0.631; p = 0.000). All the patients with rickets showed values of mcSOS and mcBTT lower than the 10th percentile. Conclusion. Our findings show that this new simple technique appears to be a promising tool for monitoring bone mineral status in pediatric clinical practice and in early life. Furthermore, it could be considered a useful method to investigate and to monitor the role of different factors on programming of bone health and it should be tested as a new method for monitoring subjects with rickets during therapy.

Abstract
Background The aim of the study was to verify the association between body composition and physical fitness with bone status in children and adolescents. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 300 healthy students (148 boys, 152 girls). Weight, height, fat and fat-free mass, and percentage of body fat (%BF) were evaluated, as were physical fitness (abdominal exercise, flexibility, and horizontal jump tests) and maximum oxygen consumption. Bone parameters (amplitude-dependent speed of sound; AD-SoS) and the Ultrasound Bone Profile Index (UBPI) were evaluated using DBM Sonic BP ultrasonography. Results In the study group, girls had higher bone parameter values than boys. A univariate analysis assessed in a stepwise multiple regression model was conducted. It showed that for boys, the %BF and height were significant independent variables for AD-SoS and UBPI, but the horizontal jump test only for AD-SoS (adjusted r2 = 0.274; p < 0.001), and pubertal maturation only for UBPI (adjusted r2 = 0.295; p < 0.001). For girls, age and %BF were identified as significant independent variables for AD-SoS and UBPI (adjusted r2 = 0.093; p < 0.001) but height only for AD-SoS (adjusted r2 = 0.408; p < 0.001). Conclusions Variables related to growth (age, height, and pubertal maturation) are independent positive predictors for the bone parameters in both boys and girls. %BF is an independent negative predictor. For boys, the horizontal jump test was an independent positive predictor for AD-SoS, indicating that physical fitness related to the neuromotor system can influence the amount of bone present.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Investigate the effects of selected factors associated with quantitative ultrasound parameters among Inuit preschoolers living in Arctic communities (56° 32'-72° 40'N). MATERIALS AND METHODS Children were selected randomly in summer and early fall (n=296). Dietary intake was assessed through the administration of a 24-h dietary recall (24-h recall) and a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Anthropometry was measured using standardized procedures. Plasma 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) and parathyroid hormone (PTH) were measured using a chemiluminescent assay (Liaison, Diasorin). Quantitative ultrasound parameters were measured using Sahara Sonometer, (Hologic Inc.). RESULTS Children divided by speed of sound (SoS) and broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) quartiles were not different for age (years), sex (M/F), calcium (mg/d) and vitamin D intake (µg/d) and plasma 25(OH)D concentration (nmol/L). However, children in the highest BUA and SoS quartile had higher body mass index (BMI) compared to those in quartile 1. Using multivariate linear regression, higher BMI, older age and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) intake were predictors of BUA while only BMI was a predictor of SoS. CONCLUSIONS Further investigation assessing intakes of traditional foods (TF) and nutrients affecting bone parameters along with assessment of vitamin D status of Inuit children across seasons is required.
