Abstract
Despite research has massively focused on how emotions conveyed by faces are perceived, the perception of emotions' authenticity is a topic that has been surprisingly overlooked. Here, we present the Emotion Authenticity Recognition (EAR) test, a test specifically developed using dynamic stimuli depicting authentic and posed emotions to evaluate the ability of individuals to correctly identify an emotion (emotion recognition index, ER Index) and classify its authenticity (authenticity recognition index (EA Index). The EAR test has been validated on 522 healthy participants and normative values are provided. Correlations with demographic characteristics, empathy and general cognitive status have been obtained revealing that both indices are negatively correlated with age, and positively with education, cognitive status and different facets of empathy. The EAR test offers a new ecological test to assess the ability to detect emotion authenticity that allow to explore the eventual social cognitive deficit even in patients otherwise cognitively intact.

Abstract
Objective: The Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System (D-KEFS) Color-Word-Interference Test (CWIT; AKA Stroop test) is a widely used measure of processing speed and executive function. While test materials and instructions have been translated to Norwegian, only American age-adjusted norms from D-KEFS are available in Norway. We here develop norms in a sample of 1011 Norwegians between 20 and 85 years. We provide indexes for stability over time and assess demographic adjustments applying the D-KEFS norms. Method: Participants were healthy Norwegian adults from Center for Lifespan Changes in Brain and Cognition (LCBC) (n = 899), the Dementia Disease Initiation (n = 77), and Oslo MCI (n = 35). Using regression-based norming, we estimated linear and non-linear effects of age, education, and sex on the CWIT 1-4 subtests. Stability over time was assessed with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). The normative adjustment of the D-KEFS norms was assessed with linear regression models. Results: Increasing age was associated with slower completion on all CWIT subtests in a non-linear fashion (accelerated lowering of performance with older age). Women performed better on CWIT-1&3. Higher education predicted faster completion time on CWIT-3&4. The original age-adjusted norms from D-KEFS did not adjust for sex or education. Furthermore, we observed significant, albeit small effects of age on all CWIT subtests. ICC analyses indicated moderate to good stability over time. Conclusion: We present demographically adjusted regression-based norms and stability indexes for the D-KEFS CWIT subtests. US D-KEFS norms may be inaccurate for Norwegians with high or low educational attainment, especially women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Post-stroke fatigue (PSF) is an experience characterized by an early feeling of exhaustion with fatigue, a lack of energy, and difficulty in exertion, both motor and cognitive. To counteract fatigue and limit its effects on activities of daily living, the use of vitamins and minerals is known in addition to the pharmacological approach. However, few studies have evaluated the effect of vitamin and mineral supplementation on fatigue management. SiderAL® Med is a food for special medical purposes with a complete formulation containing vitamins, sucrosomal minerals, copper and algal calcium. The aim of the study is to evaluate whether nutritional supplementation with SiderAL® Med improves the symptom of fatigue and motor and cognitive function in stroke patients. DESIGN This is a pilot, randomized study with a control group. SETTING Post-Acute Rehabilitation Unit of the Fondazione Policlinico "A. Gemelli" IRCCS. PARTICIPANTS Twenty-four patients with stroke outcomes, admitted to rehabilitation, were recruited and randomized into the experimental group (Sid-G) and the control group (CG). INTERVENTION The Sid-G patients, in association with the pharmacological and rehabilitation therapy foreseen during hospitalization, took SiderAL® Med, one sachet per day for 8 weeks, while the CG patients underwent only the pharmacological and rehabilitation therapy foreseen in the daily routine. MEASUREMENTS All patients were assessed at baseline (T0), after 4 weeks (T1), after 8 weeks (T2) and after 12 weeks (T3) for motor and cognitive fatigue, balance, walking, functional capacity, cognitive performance, autonomy, quality of life and body composition. RESULTS Both Sid-G and CG patients showed significant improvement on most rating scales between T0-T1-T2-T3 (p = 0.0001). When comparing the two groups, a statistically significant difference emerged in favor of Sid-G with regard to motor fatigue (p = 0.007), cognitive fatigue (p = 0.009) and total fatigue (p = 0.034); balance (p < 0.001), functional capacity (p < 0.001); cognitive performance (p = 0.004); bone mineral content (p = 0.005), lean mass (p = 0.005), total mass (p < 0.001) and percentage of fat mass (p = 0.039). CONCLUSION Nutritional supplementation with SiderAL® Med, in concert with intensive rehabilitation treatment, appears to be effective in managing fatigue and improving motor and cognitive performance and body composition, representing a valuable tool to associate with rehabilitation treatment in stroke patients.

Abstract
Psychosocial functioning represents a core treatment target of Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders (SSD), and several clinical and cognitive factors contribute to its impairment. However, determinants of psychosocial functioning in people living with SSD that committed violent offences remain to be more thoroughly explored. This study aims to separately assess and compare predictors of psychosocial functioning in people with SSD that did and that did not commit violent offences considering several clinical, cognitive and violence-related parameters. Fifty inmates convicted for violent crimes in a forensic psychiatry setting diagnosed with SSD (OP group) and fifty participants matched for age, gender, education, and diagnosis (Non-OP group) were included in the study. A higher risk of violent relapse as measured by HCR-20 clinical subscale scores (p < 0.002) and greater global clinical severity as measured by CGI-S scores (p = 0.023) emerged as individual predictors of worse psychosocial functioning, as measured by PSP scores, in the OP group. Greater global clinical severity (p < 0.001), worse performance in the processing speed domain as measured by the BACS Symbol Coding (p = 0.002) and TMT-A tests (p = 0.016) and higher levels of non-planning impulsivity as measured by BIS-11 scores (p < 0.001) emerged as individual predictors of worse psychosocial functioning in the Non-OP group. These results confirm that clinical severity impacts psychosocial functioning in all individuals diagnosed with SSD and suggest that while cognitive impairment clearly represents a determinant of worse functional outcomes in most patients, the risk of violent relapse is a specific predictor of worse psychosocial functioning in people with SSD that committed criminal offences.

Abstract
Occupational health is a major problem in modern work environments. Physical activity breaks (PABs), short exercise periods delivered during working hours, incorporating exergames or outdoor activities, have emerged as a novel approach that could be used to improve work efficiency and workplace wellbeing. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of PABs on attention levels and executive functions in healthcare workers. A total of 27 healthcare workers (M = 14, W = 13; 49.55 ± 12.46 years), after 4 h of work, randomly performed one of three 10 min conditions weekly in a counterbalanced order: No Physical Activity Break (NPAB); Outdoor Physical Activity Break (OPAB); Physical Activity Break with Exergame (PABEx). After the conditions, executive functions and selective attention were assessed by the Stroop Color and Word Test (SCWT), and the Trail Making A,B test (TMT A,B), respectively. Significant differences between OPAB and NPAB as well as between PABEx and NPAB in the TMT-A test χ2(2) = 44.66 (p < 0.001) and TMT-B test χ2(2) = 48.67 (p < 0.001) were found, respectively. TMT-A and SCWT interference/time scores of the PABEx and OPAB conditions were significantly lower than those of NPAB (p < 0.001). In the SCWT interference/error score, no significant difference was found between the PABEx and NPAB (p > 0.05), but the score was statistically lower in the OPAB condition than PABEx (p = 0.001) and PABEx condition compared to OPAB for TMT-A (p = 0.001). Findings showed that the OPAB and PABEx conditions are effective in improving selective attention and executive functions in healthcare workers. Employers can foster a healthier and more productive workforce by promoting a culture of movement and prioritizing employee health, which in turn can enhance patient care outcomes.

Abstract
Mixed primary progressive aphasia (mPPA) accounts for a substantial proportion of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) cases. However, the lack of a standardised definition of this condition has resulted in misclassification of PPA cases. In this study, we enrolled 55 patients diagnosed with PPA, comprising 12 semantic variant (svPPA), 23 logopenic variant (lvPPA), and 20 mPPA cases with linguistic characteristics consistent with both svPPA and lvPPA (s/lvPPA). All patients underwent language assessments, evaluation of Alzheimer's disease biomarkers (via cerebrospinal fluid analysis or Amyloid-PET), and 18F-FDG-PET brain scans. An agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC) analysis based on linguistic characteristics revealed two distinct clusters within the s/lvPPA group: cluster k1 (n = 10) displayed an AD-like biomarker profile, with lower levels of Aβ42 and Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio, along with higher levels of t-tau and p-tau compared to cluster k2 (n = 10). Interestingly, k1 exhibited linguistic features that were similar to those of svPPA. Both clusters exhibited extensive temporoparietal hypometabolism. These findings support the hypothesis that a subgroup of s/lvPPA may represent a clinical manifestation of AD-related PPA.

Fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations in sensory-motor networks and limbic system as a potential predictor of treatment response in patients with schizophrenia. Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous investigations have revealed substantial differences in neuroimaging characteristics between healthy controls (HCs) and individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia (SCZ). However, we are not entirely sure how brain activity links to symptoms in schizophrenia, and there is a need for reliable brain imaging markers for treatment prediction. METHODS In this longitudinal study, we examined 56 individuals diagnosed with 56 SCZ and 51 HCs. The SCZ patients underwent a three-month course of antipsychotic treatment. We employed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) along with fractional Amplitude of Low Frequency Fluctuations (fALFF) and support vector regression (SVR) methods for data acquisition and subsequent analysis. RESULTS In this study, we initially noted lower fALFF values in the right postcentral/precentral gyrus and left postcentral gyrus, coupled with higher fALFF values in the left hippocampus and right putamen in SCZ patients compared to the HCs at baseline. However, when comparing fALFF values in brain regions with abnormal baseline fALFF values for SCZ patients who completed the follow-up, no significant differences in fALFF values were observed after 3 months of treatment compared to baseline data. The fALFF values in the right postcentral/precentral gyrus and left postcentral gyrus, and the left postcentral gyrus were useful in predicting treatment effects. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that reduced fALFF values in the sensory-motor networks and increased fALFF values in the limbic system may constitute distinctive neurobiological features in SCZ patients. These findings may serve as potential neuroimaging markers for the prognosis of SCZ patients.

Abstract
Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome (WKS) is a severe neurological disorder resulting from thiamine deficiency, commonly associated with alcohol consumption but also stemming from dietary imbalances or other clinical conditions. Cognitive deficits, affecting memory and executive functions, pose a serious concern, with partial recovery often not complete. A 28-year-old woman underwent surgery for acute necrotizing hemorrhagic pancreatitis, leading to admission for post-acute intensive treatment due to prolonged bed rest syndrome. Clinical examinations revealed sensory-motor neuropathy, denervation in the active phase, mammillary body hyperintensity, and cognitive impairment. The patient exhibited poor orientation, lacked awareness of her clinical condition, and experienced impaired nonverbal memory, practical constructive issues, and planning difficulties-consistent with WKS. The patient received high-dose thiamine (300 mg TDS), coupled with daily physiokinesitherapy and occupational therapy. A final neuropsychological evaluation three months later showed substantial remission of executive and memory difficulties, improved spatial-temporal orientation, and enhanced awareness. The complex case required timely multidisciplinary intervention for accurate diagnosis and effective rehabilitation. The patient experienced rapid clinical improvement and cognitive recovery with high-dose thiamine and physiotherapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The development of effective strategies to maintain good mental health of older adults is a public health priority. Mindfulness-based interventions have the potential to improve psychological well-being and cognitive functions of older adults, but little is known about the effect of such interventions when delivered through internet. During the COVID-19 pandemic we evaluated short- and long-term cognitive, psychological, and physiological effects of a mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) delivered via web-based videoconference in healthy older adults. METHODS Fifty older adults participated in an 8-week MBI, which comprised structured 2-h weekly group sessions. A comprehensive evaluation encompassing cognitive (verbal memory, attention and processing speed, executive functions) and psychological assessments (depression and anxiety symptoms, mindfulness, worries, emotion regulation strategies, well-being, interoceptive awareness and sleep) was conducted. Additionally, electroencephalography (EEG) data were recorded before and after the MBI and at the 6-month follow-up (T6). Data were analyzed using an intention-to-treat approach, using linear mixed models adjusted for age. The effect size for time was computed as omega squared. RESULTS We observed significant improvements from pre-MBI to post-MBI and at the T6 across several measures. These improvements were notable in the areas of verbal memory (California Verbal Learning Test, p ≤ .007), attention and executive functions (Trail Making Test A and BA, p < .050), interoceptive awareness (Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness, p = .0002 for self-regulation and p < .05 for noticing, body listening, and trusting dimensions), and rumination (Heidelberg Form for Emotion Regulation Strategies, p = .018). These changes were associated with low to medium effect size. Moreover, we observed significant changes in EEG patterns, with a decrease in alpha1 (p = .004) and an increase in alpha2 (p < .0001) from pre-MBI to T6. Notably, improvements in TMTBA and rumination were correlated with the decrease in alpha1 (p < .050), while improvements in TMTA were linked to the increase in alpha2 (p = .025). CONCLUSIONS The results of our study show that a web-based MBI in older adults leads to improvements in cognitive and psychological measures, with associated modulations in specific brain rhythms. While these findings are promising, further controlled studies are required to validate these preliminary results. TRIAL REGISTRATION The trial has been registered with the United States National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health Registry of Clinical Trials under the code NCT05941143 on July 12, 2023.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of augmented reality (AR) game based on n-back training paradigm as a training tool for working memory (WM) of Chinese healthy older adults. Materials and Methods: One hundred eighteen older adults self-assessed as healthy were included in this study. Individuals were randomly divided into an intervention group (n = 57) and a control group (n = 61). Interventions, consisting of a 30-minute AR game-based training and a 30-minute health science program, were administered three times per week for 4 weeks, whereas the control group was required to view a 60-minute health science program three times per week for 4 weeks. Tests, Digit Span, Corsi Block-Tapping Task (CBT), and Stroop Color and Word Test (SCWT), were conducted for all participants before and after the experiment, and the game accuracy rate of the intervention group before and after intervention was recorded. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in terms of both CBT indicators, CBT forward span (z = -2.835, P = 0.005) and CBT backward span (z = 3.285, P = 0.001), and the SCWT indicator of Stroop Words Test (SW) (z = -1.894, P = 0.048) in the two groups. The intervention group showed significant improvements in the game accuracy of both medium level (z = -3.535, P < 0.05) and of high level (z = -3.953, P < 0.05). In addition, differences were observed in subgroup analysis in the accuracy of medium level (H = 6.218, P < 0.05) and high level (H = 8.002, P < 0.05) among older people with different levels of education. Conclusion: AR game based on n-back training paradigm could improve WM of Chinese older adults, showing potential for wider promotion and adoption.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive impairment of intellectual developmental disorders (IDD) is determined by several different combinations of specific cognitive alterations. People with IDD present a rate of mental health problems that is up to 4 times higher than that of the general population. Despite this, the relationship between specific cognitive dysfunctions and co-occurring mental disorders has not been adequately studied. The aim of the present paper is to investigate the association between specific cognitive dysfunctions and specific psychiatric symptoms and syndromes in people with IDD. METHODS One hundred and twenty adults with mild to moderate IDD living in residential facilities underwent a clinical and instrumental assessment for specific cognitive and psychopathological features. RESULTS Participants with IDD and ASD have significantly lower scores compared to those without respect to who has not the diagnosis on the Processing Speed Index (PSI) and Perceptual Reasoning Index (PRI) on the WAIS-IV and higher time scores on the TMT A. Moreover, there is a significant association between years of hospitalisation and TMT B and TMT B A time scores; the longer a participant with IDD was hospitalised, the worse their performance on the TMT. Although not statistically significant, many psychopathological clusters showed substantial cognitive profiles. CONCLUSIONS Although further research is needed, neuropsychological and IQ tests scores seem to be differently associated to various psychopathological conditions co-occurring with IDD, and with ASD especially. Cognitive assessment seems to support diagnosis and treatment of psychopathological co-occurrences in persons with IDD, also in consideration of indirect implications including a better knowledge of the patient's characteristics beyond IQ deficit.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endurance sports require significant training loads to elicit the desired training effects on an athlete's body. However, if adequate recovery is not provided, overtraining may occur, with corresponding decrements in performance. As such, there is a need for measures that can be tracked, to monitor athlete adaptation to training loads, and provide early warning of possible maladaptation. The aim of this review was to determine if a relationship exists between overtraining and cognitive function in endurance athletes. METHODS A systematic search of AMED, MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus and APA PsycINFO was conducted. Eligibility criteria included original peer reviewed research, written in English, published between January 2000 and May 2022, and using human participants. Of the 221 articles screened, a total of seven studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. RESULTS The findings of the review suggest that there is a relationship between overtraining and cognitive function with all seven studies finding that cognitive performance declined in response to athletes becoming overreached or overtrained. These studies found that reaction time (as measured by Stroop colour test) increased in response to both overreaching and overtraining. CONCLUSIONS Cognitive function tests such as the Stroop Colour Test could be included as part of a broader programme for monitoring athlete adaptation to training.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Attention, working memory and executive processing have been reported to be consistently impaired in Neuro-Long coronavirus disease (COVID). On the hypothesis of abnormal cortical excitability, we investigated the functional state of inhibitory and excitatory cortical regulatory circuits by single "paired-pulse" transcranial magnetic stimulation (ppTMS) and Short-latency Afferent Inhibition (SAI). METHODS We compared clinical and neurophysiological data of 18 Long COVID patients complaining of persistent cognitive impairment with 16 Healthy control (HC) subjects. Cognitive status was evaluated by means of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and a neuropsychological evaluation of the executive function domain; fatigue was scored by the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS). Resting motor threshold (RMT), the amplitude of the motor evoked potential (MEP), Short Intra-cortical Inhibition (SICI), Intra-cortical Facilitation (ICF), Long-interval Intracortical Inhibition (LICI) and Short-afferent inhibition (SAI) were investigated over the motor (M1) cortex. RESULTS MoCA corrected scores were significantly different between the two groups (p = 0.023). The majority of the patients' performed sub-optimally in the neuropsychological assessment of the executive functions. The majority (77.80%) of the patients reported high levels of perceived fatigue in the FSS. RMT, MEPs, SICI and SAI were not significantly different between the two groups. On the other hand, Long COVID patients showed a reduced amount of inhibition in LICI (p = 0.003) and a significant reduction in ICF (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Neuro-Long COVID patients performing sub-optimally in the executive functions showed a reduction of LICI related to GABAb inhibition and a reduction of ICF related to glutamatergic regulation. No alteration in cholinergic circuits was found. SIGNIFICANCE These findings can help to better understand the neurophysiological characteristics of Neuro-Long COVID, and in particular, motor cortex regulation in people with "brain fog".

Abstract
Aging is a complex process associated with an impairment in functional capacity and low health-related quality of life (HRQoL) due to a high frequency of chronic diseases in the elderly population. Regular physical activity (PA) may limit some physiological effects of sedentary lifestyle and increase life expectancy. An observational was conducted to measure the HRQoL among older adults living in the community, by comparing a convenience sample of elderly females practicing a structured program of PA from 2 to 3 times per week in 60-min sessions (i.e., active females, AFs) to a sample of participants adopting lifestyle behaviors expending little energy (i.e., sedentary females, SFs). A validated questionnaire (the RAND 36-item) was used as outcome measure. All participants were assessed in terms of cognitive status (Montreal Cognitive Assessment, MoCA) to exclude mild cognitive impairment, divided attention/executive functioning (Trail Making Test, Stroop Test) and psychopathological dimensions of anxiety (Geriatric Anxiety Inventory, GAI), and depression (Geriatric Depression Scale, GDS). Non-parametric analysis revealed that AFs and SFs differed significantly in the RAND Energy/Fatigue (E/F), Emotional Wellbeing (EW), and Social Functioning (SoF), that was however influenced by education level. Moreover, E/F and EW were negatively associated to anxiety and depression, while SoF was influenced by divided attention. PA results in a healthful behavior for combating feelings of fatigue and low energy as well as emotional distress that can affect health status perception in older women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Some authors report steeper slopes of forgetting in early Alzheimer's disease (AD), while others do not. Contrasting findings are thought to be due to methodological inconsistencies or variety of testing methods, yet they also emerge when people are assessed on the same testing procedure. OBJECTIVE We aimed to assess if forgetting slopes of people with mild cognitive impairment due to AD (MCI-AD) are different from age-matched healthy controls (HC) by using a prose paradigm. METHODS Twenty-nine people with MCI-AD and twenty-six HC listened to a short prose passage and were asked to freely recall it after delays of 1 h and 24 h. RESULTS Generalized linear mixed modelling revealed that, compared to HC, people with MCI-AD showed poorer encoding at immediate recall and steeper forgetting up to 1 h in prose memory as assessed by free recall and with repeated testing of the same material. Forgetting rates between groups did not differ from 1 h to 24 h. CONCLUSION The differences observed in MCI-AD could be due to a post-encoding deficit. These findings could be accounted either by a differential benefit from retrieval practice, whereby people with MCI-AD benefit less than HC, or by a working memory deficit in people with MCI-AD, which fails to support their memory performance from immediate recall to 1 h.

Abstract
PURPOSE We present two patients who developed neurogenic stuttering after long COVID-19 related to SARS-CoV-2 infection. METHODS AND RESULTS Both patients experienced both physical (e.g., fatigue) and cognitive difficulties, which led to impaired function of attention, lexical retrieval, and memory consolidation. Both patients had new-onset stuttering-like speech dysfluencies: Blocks and repetitions were especially evident at the initial part of words and sentences, sometimes accompanied by effortful and associated movements (e.g., facial grimaces and oro-facial movements). Neuropsychological evaluations confirmed the presence of difficulties in cognitive tasks, while neurophysiological evaluations (i.e., electroencephalography) suggested the presence of "slowed" patterns of brain activity. Neurogenic stuttering and cognitive difficulties were evident for 4-5 months after negativization of SARS-CoV-2 nasopharyngeal swab, with gradual improvement and near-to-complete recovery. CONCLUSIONS It is now evident that SARS-CoV-2 infection may significantly involve the central nervous system, also resulting in severe and long-term consequences, even if the precise mechanisms are still unknown. In the present report, long COVID-19 resulted in neurogenic stuttering, as the likely consequence of a "slowed" metabolism of (pre)frontal and sensorimotor brain regions (as suggested by the present and previous clinical evidence). As a consequence, the pathophysiological mechanisms related to the appearance of neurogenic stuttering have been hypothesized, which help to better understand the broader and possible neurological consequences of COVID-19.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Executive functions are multi-component and are based on large-scale brain networks. For patients undergoing brain surgery in the prefrontal cortex, resection in the anterior prefrontal sites is assisted by continuous monitoring of their performance on several tasks measuring components of executive functions. In this study, we did not test patients during direct cortical stimulation, but during resection itself. We chose tests routinely used to assess executive functions and included them in a protocol for left (LH) and right (RH) hemisphere prefrontal resections. This protocol is meant to be used during real-time neuropsychological testing (RTNT)-an already established monitoring technique. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed a consecutive series of 29 adult patients with glioma in the superior and middle frontal areas who performed the RTNT sequence throughout the resection phase. The testing protocol comprised 10 tests for LH frontal resections and 9 tests for RH frontal resections. RESULTS RH patients showed a median performance on RTNT with significantly lower scores for visuo-spatial attention and emotion processing (95% Confidence Interval Lower bound of 66.55 and 82.57, respectively, χ2 (7) = 32.8, p < 0.001). LH patients showed a median performance on RTNT, with significantly lower scores for selective attention and working memory (95% Confidence Interval Lower bound of 51.12, χ2 (5) = 20.31 p < 0.001) and minimum scores for the same task and for the Stroop test (χ2 (5) = 17.86, p < 0.005). The delta for accuracy between the first and the last RTNT run was not statistically significant (RH patients: χ2 (7) = 10.49, p > 0.05, n.s.; LH patients: χ2 (5) = 3.35, p > 0.05, n.s.). Mean extent of resection was 95.33% ± 9.72 for the RH group and 94.64% ± 6.74 for the LH group. Patients showed good performance post- vs. pre-surgery. The greater difference in the number of LH patients scoring within the normal range was found for the symbol-digit modality test (83.3% to 62%), Stroop test (100% to 77%) and short-term memory (84.61% to 72.72%) and working memory (92.3% to 63.63%). For RH patients, the main changes were observed on the clock drawing test (100% to 77.7%) and cognitive estimation (100% to 72.7%). CONCLUSIONS Frontal RTNT offers continuous and reliable feedback on the patients' cognitive status during resection in frontal areas.

Abstract
Mild cognitive impairment is an intermediate state between the cognitive decline often experienced in normal aging and dementia that affects 15% of Americans over 65 years of age. Our communities have an opportunity to support the development and adoption of evidence-based programs to help older adults preserve cognition and physical function. In partnership with a local urban YMCA in an underserved, predominantly minority neighborhood, we tested the appeal and therapeutic benefits of SMARTfit training among older adults with mild cognitive impairment. The participants reported a positive training experience. After 12 weeks of dual-task training, Trail-Making Test and Stroop Color-Word Interference Test scores improved, as did scores on the Short Physical Performance Battery. Results of our SMARTfit dual-task training intervention are encouraging. Larger randomized controlled trials must further investigate the development, implementation, and therapeutic impacts of SMARTfit dual-task training on cognitive and physical function in aging.

Abstract
The elderly population is increasing and the implementation of stimulating training to promote active aging has become a research issue. This study aimed at investigating the effects of a cognitive-motor exergame training on cognitive functions and mood, in healthy older adults. A randomized controlled pilot study was conducted to compare a cognitive-motor exergame training with a passive control group. The training consisted of 8 sessions of 45 min each, including 10 interactive activities focused on several cognitive functions such as memory, processing speed and executive functions, all requiring motor planning and execution. A total of 57 participants were administered a battery of cognitive tests before and after the training. A mixed-effect ANOVA with group (experimental vs. control) as between factor and time (pre-and post-test) as within factor, was performed to evaluate the effect of the exergame training on cognitive abilities and mood. Results showed significant interaction effects in processing speed [STROOPC: F (1,53.4) = 9.04, p = 0.004, R 2 = 0.82], inhibition [3backs' false alarms: F (1,47.5) = 5.5, p = 0.02, R 2 = 0.79], and mood [Beck Depression Inventory: F (1,55) = 4.15, p = 0.04, R 2 = 0.6]. Even though post-hoc analyses did not provide statistical evidence supporting the interactions, overall data showed a trend toward better scores only for the experimental group, suggesting a potential improvement in information processing speed, working memory and mood. Exergaming may be a motivating and enjoyable approach to healthy and active aging.

Abstract
Background Auraptene (AUR) and naringenin (NAR) are citrus-derived phytochemicals that influence several biological mechanisms associated with cognitive decline, including neuronal damage, oxidative stress and inflammation. Clinical evidence of the efficacy of a nutraceutical with the potential to enhance cognitive function in cohorts at risk of cognitive decline would be of great value from a preventive perspective. The primary aim of this study is to determine the cognitive effects of a 36-week treatment with citrus peel extract standardized in levels of AUR and NAR in older adults experiencing subjective cognitive decline (SCD). The secondary aim is to determine the effects of these phytochemicals on blood-based biomarkers indicative of neuronal damage, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Methods Eighty older persons with SCD will be recruited and randomly assigned to receive the active treatment (400 mg of citrus peel extract containing 0.1 mg of AUR and 3 mg of NAR) or the placebo at a 1:1 ratio for 36 weeks. The primary endpoint is a change in the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status score from baseline to weeks 18 and 36. Other cognitive outcomes will include changes in verbal and nonverbal memory, attention, executive and visuospatial functions. Blood samples will be collected from a consecutive subsample of 60 participants. The secondary endpoint is a change in interleukin-8 levels over the 36-week period. Other biological outcomes include changes in markers of neuronal damage, oxidative stress, and pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Conclusion This study will evaluate whether an intervention with citrus peel extract standardized in levels of AUR and NAR has cognitive and biological effects in older adults with SCD, facilitating the establishment of nutrition intervention in people at risk of cognitive decline. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Neuropsychological assessment of cognitive functioning is a crucial part of clinical care: diagnosis, treatment planning, treatment evaluation, research, and prediction of long-term outcomes. The Equivalent Score (ES) method is used to score numerous neuropsychological tests. The ES0 and the ES4 are defined respectively by the outer tolerance limit and the median. The intermediate ESs are commonly calculated using a z-score approach even when the distribution of neuropsychological data is typically non-parametric. To calculate more accurate ESs, we propose that the intermediate ESs need to be calculated based on a non-parametric rank subdivision of the distribution of the adjusted scores. MATERIAL AND METHODS We make three simulations to explain the differences between the classical z-score approach, the rank-based approach, and the direct subdivision of the dependent variable. RESULTS The results show that the rank procedure permits dividing the region between ES0 and ES4 into three areas with the same density. The z-score procedure is quite similar to the direct subdivision of the dependent variable and different from the rank subdivision. CONCLUSIONS By subdividing intermediate ESs using the rank-subdivision, neuropsychological tests can be scored more accurately, also considering that the two essential points for diagnosis (ES = 0 and ES = 4) remain the same. Future normative data definition should consider the best procedure for scoring with ES.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder (MDD) is linked to degenerative and inflammatory processes in the brain. The retina, as well as the brain, originates from the ectoderm. The changes in the retina that occur in concert with MDD and sleep quality are not very clear. This study aimed to detect changes in the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and macular thickness in Chinese patients in correlation with MDD and sleep quality. METHODS Thirty-six MDD patients and 187 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled in this study. All subjects were scanned by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) and completed the Stroop Colour-Word Test (SCWT), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9. RESULTS The RNFL and macular thickness were significantly thinner and disc-area enlargement of the right eye and cup-volume enlargement of both eyes were present in MDD patients. Linear regression analysis revealed that the RNFL and macular thickness in patients with MDD were correlated with sleep quality and the severity of depression. SCWT scores were higher following expansion of the cup volume of the right eye (all p < 0.01) and in correlation with larger disc areas. CONCLUSIONS Serious degrees of depression and insomnia in MDD patients may reflect obvious atrophy of the inner and outer rings of the right macula and enlargement of the optic disc in both eyes. These retinal structural changes might influence the visual cognition of patients with MDD.

Abstract
The Groffman visual tracing (GVT) test is an indirect psychometric measure of oculomotor performance, used for the clinical assessment of eye movements. The test consists of two cards with five contorted lines of increasing overlap, crowding, and difficulty. The task starts from each of the letters at the top of the page, follows the line from the letter to the corresponding number at the bottom of the page, and the number is named. Although the GVT test was developed for the evaluation of children, it has also been applied to adults with visual and cognitive deficits. However, it lacks reference values. Therefore, the aim of the study was to assess oculomotor behavior across the typical human lifespan and to define normative data in an adult population. A total of 526 adults aged between 20 and 79 years, all without neurological or psychiatric deficits, were enrolled in the study. The results were analyzed by considering the accuracy and execution times separately. An influence of age, education and sex for accuracy was found, and age for the execution times was found. Norms for adults were developed considering the specific structure of the test and the accuracy and the execution time separately. The GVT test can now be applied in healthy and neurological adult populations for the evaluation of oculomotor performance.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Many studies have attempted to determine whether Alzheimer's disease (AD) in-vivo biomarkers can predict neuropsychological performance since pathophysiological changes precede cognitive changes by several years. Nonetheless, neuropsychological measures can also detect cognitive deterioration in cognitively normal individuals with AD-positive biomarkers. Recent studies have investigated whether cognitive measures can be used as a proxy for biomarkers. This is a crucial issue since biomarker analysis is expensive, invasive, and not yet widespread in clinical practice. However, these studies have so far considered only one or two classes of AD biomarkers. Here, we aim at preliminarily evaluating whether and which neuropsychological measures can discriminate individuals that have been classified according to the full scheme of biomarkers known as ATN system. This scheme groups biomarkers as a function of the three main AD-related pathologic processes they measure (i.e., β-amyloidosis, tauopathy, and neurodegeneration) to provide an unbiased and descriptive definition of the Alzheimer's continuum. METHOD Biomarkers and neuropsychological data from 78 patients (70.01 ± 9.15 years; 38 females) with suspected cognitive decline were extracted from a medical database. Participants' biomarker profiles were classified into the following ATN categories: normal AD biomarkers; Alzheimer's continuum; non-AD pathologic change. Data were analyzed using a Bayesian approach, to guarantee reliable result interpretation of data stemming from small samples. RESULTS The discrimination ability of each neuropsychological measure varied depending on the pairs of ATN categories compared. The best-discriminating predictor in the Alzheimer's continuum vs. normal biomarkers comparison was the figure naming ability. In contrast, in the Alzheimer's continuum vs. non-AD pathologic change comparison the best predictor was the wordlist forgetting rate. CONCLUSIONS Although the study was exploratory in nature, the proposed methodological approach may have the potential to identify the best neuropsychological measures for estimating AD neuropathological changes, leading to a more biologically informed use of neuropsychological assessment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Working memory (WM) abilities are frequently impaired in neurological disorders affecting fronto-parietal cortical/sub-cortical structures. WM deficits negatively influence interventional outcomes and everyday functioning. This study thus aimed at the following: (a) developing and standardizing an ecologically valid task for WM assessment ( Ice Cream Test, ICT); (b) validating and norming a novel WM test (Digit Ordering Test, DOT), as well as providing updated norms for digit span (DS) tasks, in an Italian population sample; (c) introducing a novel scoring procedure for measuring WM. METHODS One-hundred and sixty-eight Italian healthy participants-73 male, 95 females; age: 48.4 ± 19.1 (18-86); education: 12.1 ± 4.8 (4-21)-underwent a thorough WM assessment-DOT, ICT, and both forward and backward DS tasks (FDS, BDS). The ICT requires participants to act as waiters who have to keep track of customers' orders. For each task, WM and total (T) outcomes were computed, i.e., the number of elements in the longest sequence and that of recalled sequences, respectively. Norms were derived via the equivalent score (ES) method. RESULTS DS ratios (DSRs) were computed for both WM/S and T outcomes on raw DS measures (BDS divided by FDS). Age and education significantly predicted all WM tasks; sex affected FDS and DSR-T scores (males > females). WM measures were highly internally related. DISCUSSION The present work provides Italian practitioners with a normatively updated, multi-component, adaptive battery for WM assessment (WoMAB) as well as with novel outcomes which capture different WM facets-WM capacity and attentive monitoring abilities.

Abstract
Background The availability of fine-grained, culture-specific psychometric outcomes can favor the interpretation of scores of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), the most frequently used instrument to screen for mild cognitive dysfunctions in both instrumental and non-instrumental domains. This study thus aimed at providing: (i) updated, region-specific norms for the Italian MoCA, by also (ii) comparing them to pre-existing ones with higher geographical coverage; (iii) information on sensitivity and discriminative capability at the item level. Methods Five hundred and seventy nine healthy individuals from Northern Italy (208 males, 371 females; age: 63.4 ± 15, 21–96; education: 11.3 ± 4.6, 1–25) were administered the MoCA. Item Response Theory (IRT) was adopted to assess item difficulty and discrimination. Normative values were derived by means of the Equivalent Scores (ESs) method, applied to the MoCA and its sub-scales. Average ESs were also computed. Agreement with previous ESs classification was assessed via Cohen’s k. Results Age and education significantly predicted all MoCA measures except for Orientation, which was related to age only. No sex differences were detected when tested along with age and education. Substantial disagreements with previous ESs classifications were detected. Several items proved to be scarcely sensitive, especially the place item from Orientation and the letter detection task. Memory items showed high discriminative capability, along with certain items assessing executive functions and orientation. Discussion Item-level information herewith provided for the Italian MoCA can help interpret its scores by Italian practitioners. Italian practitioners should consider an adaptive use of region-specific norms for the MoCA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Deficits of executive functioning (EF) are frequently found in neurological disorders. The Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB) is one of the most widespread and psychometrically robust EF screeners in clinical settings. However, in Italy, FAB norms date back to 15 years ago; moreover, its validity against "EF-loaded" global cognitive screeners (e.g., the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, MoCA) has yet to be tested. This study thus aimed at (a) providing updated normative data for the Italian FAB and (b) assessing its convergent validity with the MoCA. METHODS Four-hundred and seventy-five healthy Italian native speakers (306 females, 169 males; mean age: 61.08 ± 15.1; mean education: 11.67 ± 4.57) were administered by the MoCA and the FAB. FAB items were divided into three subscales: FAB-1 (linguistically mediated EF), FAB-2 (planning), and FAB-3 (inhibition). Regression-based norms were derived (equivalent scores) for all FAB measures. RESULTS Age and education were predictive of all FAB measures, whereas no gender differences were detected. The FAB and its sub-scales were related to MoCA measures-the strongest associations being found with MoCA total and MoCA-EF scores. FAB sub-scales were both internally related and associated with FAB total scores. DISCUSSION The FAB proved to have convergent validity with both global cognitive and EF measures in healthy individuals. The present study provides updated normative data for the FAB and its sub-scales in an Italian population sample, and thus supports an adaptive usage of this EF screener.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical exercise is an effective measure for preventing the onset of cognitive decline and has a direct influence on the aging process. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of a 6-month physical exercise program on cognition and telomere length in adults over 65 years of age. METHOD Seventy-four healthy women were separated into two groups: 41 were included in the intervention group (IG) (72.70 ± 4.127 years and 8.18 ± 1.551 years of education) and 33 in the control group (CG) (71.21 ± 4.127 years and 8.42 ± 2.562). The participants included within the IG carried out three sessions of physical exercise per week for six months. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Stroop test and the Trail Making Test (TMT). Saliva samples were taken and analyzed and relative telomere length was calculated. Those conducting the analysis were blind to the group to which the participants had been assigned. RESULTS An improvement was observed in global cognitive function, in both attentional and executive functions, in the group of adults doing physical exercise as compared to the control group. Six months after the physical exercise program had finished, relative telomere length was found to have increased in the participants in the intervention group. CONCLUSION Physical exercise programs can lead to an improvement in both cognitive functions and telomere length.

Abstract
Olfactory deficit is a widely documented non-motor symptom in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Abnormal turning points trajectories through olfactory threshold testing have been recently reported in patients with olfactory dysfunction, who seem to adapt faster to olfactory stimuli, but data on PD patients are lacking. The aim of this study is to perform olfactory threshold test and explore the turning points trajectories in PD patients in comparison to normal controls. We recruited 59 PD patients without dementia, and no conditions that could influence evaluation of olfaction and cognition. Sixty healthy subjects served as controls. Patients and controls underwent a comprehensive olfactory evaluation with the Sniffin’ Sticks extended test assessing threshold, discrimination and identification and a full neuropsychological evaluation. Besides, threshold test data were analyzed examining all the turning points trajectories. PD patients showed a different olfactory threshold test pattern, i.e., faster olfactory adaptation, than controls with no effect of age. Normosmic PD patients showed different olfactory threshold test pattern, i.e., better threshold score, than normosmic controls. Visuospatial dysfunction was the only factor that significantly influenced this pattern. Olfactory threshold trajectories suggested a possible adaptation phenomenon in PD patients. Our data offered some new insights on normosmic PD patients, which appear to be a subset with a specific psychophysical profile. The analysis of the turning points trajectories, through an olfactory threshold test, could offer additional information on olfactory function in PD patients. Future larger studies should confirm these preliminary findings.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate brain functional correlates of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in idiopathic REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD). METHODS Thirty-nine consecutive iRBD patients, 17 with (RBD-MCI, 73.6±6.5 years), and 22 without (RBD-NC, 69.6±6.1 years) MCI underwent neuropsychological assessment, 18F-FDG-PET, and 123I-FP-CIT-SPECT as a marker of nigro-striatal dopaminergic function. Forty-two healthy subjects (69.6±8.5 years) were used as control for 18F-FDG-PET analysis. Brain metabolism was compared between the three groups by univariate analysis of variance. Post hoc comparison between RBD-MCI and RBD-NC was performed to investigate the presence of an MCI-related volume of interest (MCI-VOI). Brain functional connectivity was explored by interregional correlation analysis (IRCA), using the whole-brain normalized MCI-VOI uptake as the independent variable. Moreover, the MCI-VOI uptake was correlated with 123I-FP-CIT-SPECT specific-to-non displaceable binding ratios (SBR) and neuropsychological variables. Finally, the MCI-VOI white matter structural connectivity was analyzed by using a MRI-derived human atlas. RESULTS The MCI-VOI was characterized by a relative hypometabolism involving precuneus and cuneus (height threshold p<0.0001). IRCA (height threshold p<0.0001) revealed a brain functional network involving regions in frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital lobes, thalamus, caudate, and red nuclei in iRBD patients. In controls, the network was smaller and involved temporal, occipital, cingulate cortex, and cerebellum. Moreover, MCI-VOI metabolism was correlated with verbal memory (p=0.01), executive functions (p=0.0001), and nigro-putaminal SBR (p=0.005). Finally, MCI-VOI was involved in a white matter network including cingulate fasciculus and corpus callosum. CONCLUSION Our data suggest that cuneus/precuneus is a hub of a large functional network subserving cognitive function in iRBD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have suggested retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) involvement in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. Additionally, research has shown that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) potentially contributes to the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate VEGF, RNFL, and correlations with cognitive impairments in schizophrenia patients. METHODS Patients with schizophrenia (n = 138) were compared to healthy controls (n = 160). RNFLs were measured with optical coherence tomography (OCT). The Stroop color and word test (SCWT) was used to evaluate neurocognition. Blood samples were collected to measure VEGF. SPSS 20.0 was used to perform analysis of covariance, t-tests, partial correlation analysis, and linear regression. RESULTS Thinner RNFLs were found in schizophrenia patients (p < 0.001). RNFL showed a significant correlation with SCWT scores (all p < 0.05). Serum level of VEGF was lower in patients with schizophrenia (p = 0.010). Total and inferior RNFL thicknesses of right eyes were positively correlated to VEGF level (RNFL total thickness p = 0.032, inferior thickness p = 0.014).Total RNFL thicknesses were shown to be reduced following a prolonged duration of illness (both p < 0.01). CONCLUSION These findings suggest that patients with schizophrenia have degeneration with RNFL thickness following illness duration, which may contribute to neurocognitive impairments observed in schizophrenia. VEGF is speculated to play some important role on RNFL degeneration with schizophrenia patients.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of low scores in a diverse Latin American population for two neuropsychological commonly used tests to evaluate executive functions and to compare the number of low scores obtained using normative data from a Spanish-speaking population from Latin America versus an English-speaking population from U.S.A. Healthy adults (N = 5402) were administered the Modified Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and Stroop Color-Word. Low scores on measures of executive functioning are common. Clinicians working with Spanish-speaking adults should take into account the higher probability of low scores on these measures to reduce false-positive diagnoses of cognitive deficits in an individual.

Abstract
The speed of information processing is one of the most reliable indices of cognitive efficiency. The most common way to evaluate this ability is to assess reaction times (RTs). The technical limitations of previous tasks, aimed at measuring RT, have motivated us to develop a new battery for their evaluation. The aim of this study is to build an open-source, open-access reaction time test (OORTT), which has the following characteristics: rapid and easy administration, robust Italian normative data based on a wide age range, a simple scoring system, compatibility with all operating systems, no license or activation costs, and based on an open-source software platform. The battery is composed of three tasks: simple reaction times (SRT), Go/No-Go (GNG) condition, and four-position reaction times (4PRT). The battery was administered to 300 healthy participants aged between 14 and 89, and 3 groups of patients: 24 right brain-damaged; 21 left brain-damaged, and 19 degenerative cognitively impaired. We have developed specific norms for each task of the test battery: SRT, GNG, and 4PRT. Compared with healthy individuals, all groups obtained lower scores. More specifically, cognitively impaired patients obtained significantly longer RTs than healthy participants as well as unilateral brain-damaged patients. In the 4PRT task, right brain-damaged patients obtained a significantly left > right difference in RTs. In conclusion, the OORTT test battery proved to be a valuable tool which can be used in the clinical environment for cases of different attentional deficits after focal or degenerative brain damage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diagnosis of prodromal Alzheimer's disease (AD) still represents a hot topic and there is a growing interest for the detection of early and non-invasive biomarkers. Although progressive episodic memory impairment is the typical predominant feature of AD, communicative difficulties can be already present at the early stages of the disease. OBJECTIVE This study investigated the narrative discourse production deficit as a hallmark of CSFdefined prodromal AD and its correlation with cerebral hypoperfusion pattern. METHODS Narrative assessment with a multilevel procedure for discourse analysis was conducted on 28 subjects with Mild Cognitive Impairment (15 MCI due to AD; 13 MCI non-AD) and 28 healthy controls. The diagnostic workup included CSF AD biomarkers. Cerebral hypoperfusion pattern was identified by SPECT image processing. RESULTS The results showed that the discourse analysis of global coherence and lexical informativeness indexes allowed to identify MCI due to AD from MCI non-AD and healthy subjects. These findings allow to hypothesize that the loss of narrative efficacy could be a possible early clinical hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. Furthermore, a significant correlation of global coherence and lexical informativeness reduction with the SPECT hypoperfusion was found in the dorsal aspect of the anterior part of the left inferior frontal gyrus, supporting the hypothesis that this area has a significant role in communicative efficacy, and in particular, in semantic selection executive control. CONCLUSION This study contributes to the understanding of the neural networks for language processing and their involvement in prodromal Alzheimer's disease. It also suggests an easy and sensitive tool for clinical practice that can help identifying individuals with prodromal Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract
Purpose High-dose benzodiazepines (BZDs) abuse has been documented to cause multidomain cognitive dysfunction. We explored whether cognitive abnormalities to high-dose BZD abuse might be reversed by detoxification with slow subcutaneous infusion of flumazenil. Methods We recruited 96 patients consecutively admitted to the Department of Internal Medicine, Addiction Medicine Unit, Verona University Hospital, Italy for detoxification from high-dose BZD dependence. After selection for inclusion and exclusion criteria, 50 patients (23 men, 27 women; age 42.7 ± 10.3 years) were included. They underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological battery to explore verbal memory, visuospatial memory, working memory, attention, and executive functions 28–30 days prior to admission for detoxification (T0) and at the end of detoxification, i.e., 7 days after admission (T1). A group of 50 healthy adults (24 men, 26 women; mean age 44.5 ± 12.8 years) matched for age, sex, and education served as controls. Results At T0, patients scored significantly worse than healthy controls in all the neuropsychological tests. Depression and anxiety scores were associated with impaired verbal memory at T0 in patients. T1–T0 comparison showed improved performances in all neuropsychological tests after the end of detoxification in patients. Conclusion We confirmed that all neuropsychological domains were significantly and profoundly impaired by high-dose BZD abuse and documented that cognitive abnormalities improved after detoxification with slow subcutaneous infusion of flumazenil.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The main goal of this study was to produce normative data for the Portuguese population on five neuropsychological tests frequently used to assess executive functions and attention: the Modified Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (M-WCST), the Stroop Color and Word Test, the Trail Making Test (TMT), the Brief Test of Attention (BTA), and the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT). METHOD The study included 300 individuals aged between 18 and 93 years, who had educational backgrounds ranging from 3 to 25 years. RESULTS The influence of age, education, and sex was explored for each measure, as well as their contribution to explain the performance variance. CONCLUSIONS The normative data are presented as regression-based algorithms to adjust direct and derived test scores for sex, age, and education. This study provides a calculator of normative data, derived from the results of the regression models.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The EncephalApp Stroop test is a high-sensitivity but low-specificity test that has been used to identify patients with covert hepatic encephalopathy (CHE). We aimed to develop a new strategy to detect CHE, combining EncephalApp Stroop test score with scores from subtests of the psychometric hepatic encephalopathy scoring system (PHES). METHODS We performed a survey of 569 adult volunteers (229 men) in 9 communities in Shanghai, China, administering the EncephalApp Stroop test to determine the range of scores in the general population. Data from the standard PHES, including the number connection test-A, number connection test-B (NCT-B), line tracing test, serial dotting test (SDT), and digit symbol test, were used as the reference standard for diagnosis of CHE. A combination of the EncephalApp Stroop with subtests of the PHES was used to establish a new strategy for CHE diagnosis. We validated our findings using data from 160 patients with cirrhosis from 5 centers China. RESULTS We determined the range of EncephalApp Stroop test scores for the volunteers of different decades of age, education levels, and sexes. Age, education level, and sex were independently associated with EncephalApp Stroop test scores. A combination of scores from the EncephalApp Stroop test, the NCT-B, and the SDT identified patients with CHE with the highest level of accuracy, when the standard PHES was used as the reference standard. A combination of scores of 187 sec for the EncephalApp Stroop test and below -1 for the NCT-B or below -1 for the SDT identified patients with CHE with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.86, 81.0% sensitivity, and 91.9% specificity, and 87.5% accuracy. In the validation cohort, these cutoff scores identified patients with CHE with an AUC of 0.88, 97.1% sensitivity, 79.3% specificity, and 86.9% accuracy. The average time to calculate this score was 374±140 sec, compared 424±115 sec for the entire PHES. CONCLUSION Scores from the EncephalApp Stroop test, NCT-B, and SDT identify patients with CHE with approximately 87% accuracy, and in a much shorter time than the standard PHES. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia - (bv-FTD) share common neuropsychological features except for online monitoring awareness. Therefore, the aim of our study is to explore if this assessment could be used in standard clinical practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively analyse 93 subjects (27 FTD, 25 PSP, 42 healthy controls). Neuropsychological and instrumental examinations were performed for each patient. RESULTS FTD patients made fewer self-corrections than PSP patients despite a similar number of total errors. We also performed ROC curves: the area under the curve (AUC) is 0.79. A model for a logistic regression was also developed: the only significant predictor is the number of self-corrections (p = 0.004 β = 1244). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, our findings show online awareness is more compromised in FTD patients than in PSP patients. This difference could be useful for making a differential diagnosis between the two diseases: for each extra point in number of self-corrections the probability of suffering from PSP increases by about three and a half times (OR 3.47).

Abstract
Introduction: The use of novel designer drugs has increased worldwide over the years. Etizolam is a designer benzodiazepine (BZD) that has raised concern because of its growing non-medical use, liability to tolerance and dependence, and related harms. Studies exploring the abuse liability and cognitive effects of etizolam outside the therapeutic doses are lacking. Aims: To explore the abuse liability of etizolam and the characteristics of patients affected by etizolam high-dose dependence in a nationwide tertiary referral addiction unit. To document the cognitive changes to etizolam high-dose use. Design and Methods: Sociodemographic and clinical data on subjects with etizolam high-dose use were retrospectively collected from a database of 1,293 patients consecutively admitted to the Addiction Medicine Unit, Verona University Hospital, Italy for detoxification from high-dose BZDs or Z-drugs dependence. Thorough neuropsychological testing explored the cognitive side effects of high-dose etizolam use. Results: We found eleven etizolam high-dose users, of which eight used etizolam only, and three used etizolam with other BZDs/zolpidem. All the patients were prescribed etizolam for medical reasons, i.e., anxiety and/or insomnia. Neuropsychological evaluation showed deficits of working memory, visuospatial memory and executive function in a 27-year-old woman who used etizolam 15 mg daily. Discussion: Our findings suggest that abuse and dependence liability of etizolam should be considered a public health and social problem. They offer preliminary evidence on the cognitive side effects of etizolam high-dose use. Conclusions: This report offers new information on the potential harms of etizolam in patients who are prescribed this drug for medical reasons.

Abstract
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients often express cognitive and behavioral dysfunctions within the so-called "frontotemporal spectrum disorders." Guidelines recommend screening of such dysfunctions, albeit only ALS dedicated tools are eventually suitable, due to the profound motor limitations induced by the disease. ALS Cognitive Behavioral Screen (ALS-CBS) is such a screening tool but normative data are not available, limiting its widespread implementation. Our aim consisted in producing normative data for the Italian version of the ALS-CBS. The scale was administered to n = 458 healthy controls with different age and education. Following translation and back translation of the original version of the test, normative data and correction scores for the ALS-CBS cognitive subtest (ALS-CBSci) were generated. Furthermore, n = 100 ALS consecutive outpatients with a wide range of cognitive and motor severity underwent to the ALS-CBS, besides FAB and Weigl sorting test (WST), in order to check its usability. Completion rate was 100% for ALS-CBS and WST, and 68% for the FAB. Corrected ALS-CBS scores showed 12% detection rate of significant cognitive dysfunction with a moderate kappa with FAB and WST. For the ALS-CBS behavioral subtest (ALS-CBSbi), a caregiver was available for n = 81 ALS patients and asked to complete the subset. The detection rate for behavioral dysfunction was 55.5%, and a mild correlation between with the Caregiver Burden Inventory was present (r = - 0.26, p = 0.04). In conclusion, we offer here normative data for the ALS-CBS, a handy tool for screening frontotemporal spectrum dysfunctions in ALS patients, and confirm its usability and validity in an outpatient setting.

Objective
The aim of this study was to construct regression-based norms for 3 executive-function tests: the Trail Making Test, Stroop, and Verbal Fluency.
Method
A sample of 1,034 healthy Icelandic adults (18–64 years) was used to calculate predicted scores for test measures from all 3 tests, controlled for the effects of age, gender, and education, as well as the interaction between these variables.
Results
The 3 demographic variables showed significant effects on most test measures and were included in the final equation for estimating predicted scores. An older age and less education predicted worse cognitive performances in most cases, and women tended to outperform men.
Conclusion
These results highlight the importance of adjusting for age, gender, and educational level when constructing normative data. Controlling for age alone may be insufficient or misleading in clinical-practice settings. A simple, user-friendly program for predicting executive-function test scores is provided.

Abstract
Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and chemosensory dysfunction are non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), but their association is unclear. We explored if MCI and the involvement of single cognitive domains influence olfaction and taste in PD. The role of demographic, clinical and neuropsychiatric variables was tested. We recruited 50 PD patients without dementia, no other reasons for cognitive impairment, no condition that could influence evaluation of cognition, olfaction and taste. They underwent a full neuropsychological and chemosensory (i.e., olfaction and taste) test with the Sniffin' Sticks Extended test (SSET), Whole Mouth test (WMT) and Taste Strips test (TST). Fifty age- and sex-matched healthy subjects served as controls. Olfactory function and sweet identification were worse in PD than controls. MCI negatively influenced odor identification. Factors associated with poor olfactory function were age, overall cognition, apathy, and visuospatial dysfunction. Sour identification was affected by MCI and executive dysfunction, and salty identification by executive dysfunction. MCI, age and executive dysfunction worsened TST score. Awareness of olfactory dysfunction was impaired in PD with MCI. Education positively influenced SSET and TST scores. Our data confirmed that olfaction is abnormal in PD, while taste was only slightly impaired. Olfaction was worse in PD patients with visuospatial dysfunction, while sour and salty identification was worse in those with MCI and executive dysfunction, suggesting different underlying anatomical abnormalities. Future studies should incorporate neuroimaging and cerebrospinal fluid data to confirm this hypothesis. SSET odor identification and TST sour identification could be explored as quick screening tests for PD-MCI.

Abstract
Objective: The Bells Test is a cancelation task that is widely used for the diagnosis of unilateral spatial neglect (USN). With the aim of fostering more reliable use of this instrument, we set out to develop new norms adjusted for the possible influence of age, gender and education. We worked on the original version of the test. Methods: Normative data were collected from 401 healthy participants aged between 20 and 80 years. Individual factors that could affect performance (i.e., gender, age, and years of education) were considered. We computed several indices on the Bells Test including an asymmetry score, an accuracy score and execution time. Multiple regression analyses (for time measures) and generalized linear models (for accuracy measures) were used to check for the influence of individual predictors of performance on the Bells Test. Results: Data indicated a significant influence of age on the accuracy score and execution time variables and a marginally significant effect of education on the accuracy score variable. Wherever appropriate, cut-offs are provided for the three dependent scores on the Bells Test corrected for age and education. Conclusion: Based on a large normative sample, the present study provides new normative data on the Bells Test, which could lead to its reliable use in the diagnosis of USN.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have reliably identified an association between suicide attempts and executive functions such as decision making (DM) and inhibitory control (IC) in patients with mood disorders. As such, the present study aimed to investigate the association between inhibition, DM, impulsivity and the history of suicide attempts in individuals with bipolar (BD) or major depressive disorder (MDD), identifying which assessment instruments may be most strongly associated with suicide in clinical samples. METHODS The sample included 80 control subjects and two groups of patients with BD and MDD, matched by age and education (26 with a history of suicide attempts [MD+], and 26 with no such history [MD-]). Participants completed behavioral and self-report measures of DM and IC, which were compared between groups using ANCOVA, followed by logistic regression for patients with mood disorders only, and the presence or absence of a history of suicide as the outcome. RESULTS Cognitive performance did not differ between groups. The MD+ group showed significantly higher motor and attentional impulsivity on the BIS-11 than the MD- and control groups. A regression analysis containing these scores showed that motor impulsivity was the only significant predictor of a history of suicide (OR = 1.14; 95%CI 1.00-1.30). CONCLUSIONS Self-reported motor impulsivity was a significant predictor of suicide. These findings underscore the importance of self-report measures in neuropsychological assessment, and their contributions to the management and prognosis of patients with mood disorders. Lastly, they point to the role of impulsivity as a target for interventions and public policy on suicide prevention.

Abstract
The Stroop Color and Word Test (SCWT) is a neuropsychological test extensively used to assess the ability to inhibit cognitive interference that occurs when the processing of a specific stimulus feature impedes the simultaneous processing of a second stimulus attribute, well-known as the Stroop Effect. The aim of the present work is to verify the theoretical adequacy of the various scoring methods used to measure the Stroop effect. We present a systematic review of studies that have provided normative data for the SCWT. We referred to both electronic databases (i.e., PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar) and citations. Our findings show that while several scoring methods have been reported in literature, none of the reviewed methods enables us to fully assess the Stroop effect. Furthermore, we discuss several normative scoring methods from the Italian panorama as reported in literature. We claim for an alternative scoring method which takes into consideration both speed and accuracy of the response. Finally, we underline the importance of assessing the performance in all Stroop Test conditions (word reading, color naming, named color-word).
