Abstract
Banana is a good source of carotenoids, which are bioactive metabolites with health beneficial properties for human. However, the molecular mechanism of carotenoid accumulation in banana fruit is largely unclear. In this study, we found that high temperature elevated carotenoid production in banana pulp, which is presumably due to upregulation of a subset of carotenogenic genes as well as a carotenoid biosynthesis regulator MaSPL16. Moreover, an ethylene signaling component MaEIL9 was identified, whose transcript and protein contents were also induced by high temperature. In addition, MaEIL9 positively regulates transcription of MaDXR1, MaPDS1, MaZDS1 and MaSPL16 through directly targeting their promoters. Overexpression of MaEIL9 in tomato fruit substantially increased the expression of carotenoid formation genes and elevated carotenoid content. Importantly, transiently silencing MaEIL9 in banana fruit weakened carotenoid production caused by high temperature. Taken together, these results indicate that high temperature induces carotenoid production in banana fruit, at least in part, through MaEIL9-mediated activation of MaDXR1, MaPDS1, MaZDS1 and MaSPL16 expression.

Abstract
Banana (Musa acuminata) fruits ripening at 30 °C or above fail to develop yellow peels; this phenomenon, called green ripening, greatly reduces their marketability. The regulatory mechanism underpinning high temperature-induced green ripening remains unknown. Here we decoded a transcriptional and post-translational regulatory module that causes green ripening in banana. Banana fruits ripening at 30 °C showed greatly reduced expression of 5 chlorophyll catabolic genes (CCGs), MaNYC1 (NONYELLOW COLORING 1), MaPPH (PHEOPHYTINASE), MaTIC55 (TRANSLOCON AT THE INNER ENVELOPE MEMBRANE OF CHLOROPLASTS 55), MaSGR1 (STAY-GREEN 1), and MaSGR2 (STAY-GREEN 2), compared to those ripening at 20 °C. We identified a MYB transcription factor, MaMYB60, that activated the expression of all 5 CCGs by directly binding to their promoters during banana ripening at 20 °C, while showing a weaker activation at 30 °C. At high temperatures, MaMYB60 was degraded. We discovered a RING-type E3 ligase MaBAH1 (benzoic acid hypersensitive 1) that ubiquitinated MaMYB60 during green ripening and targeted it for proteasomal degradation. MaBAH1 thus facilitated MaMYB60 degradation and attenuated MaMYB60-induced transactivation of CCGs and chlorophyll degradation. By contrast, MaMYB60 upregulation increased CCG expression, accelerated chlorophyll degradation, and mitigated green ripening. Collectively, our findings unravel a dynamic, temperature-responsive MaBAH1-MaMYB60-CCG module that regulates chlorophyll catabolism, and the molecular mechanism underpinning green ripening in banana. This study also advances our understanding of plant responses to high-temperature stress.

Abstract
Fruit are susceptible to quality loss and deterioration after harvest due to high metabolic and physiological activities. Over the last four decades various postharvest treatments have ensured maintenance of quality, control of diseases or decay by slowing down the postharvest ripening and senesce. The fruit quality change during postharvest however, has been mostly explored using physicochemical characteristics. Considering the complexity of fruit physiology and metabolism, the application of omics techniques could aid the in-depth analysis and understanding of fruit quality change during postharvest treatment. Therefore, this review presents recent information on the application of integrated omics (transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics) in postharvest research, with an overview on fruit quality and safety. Trends in omics data analysis for fruit during postharvest handling was highlighted. The role of integrated omics in improving our understanding of fruit response during natural postharvest progression (towards decay) during storage, as well as in case of induced responses due to the application of biocontrols was discussed. The article concluded with the outlooks of future studies on the application of integrated omics as the catalyst for innovative postharvest solutions.

Abstract
Cassava is one of the most versatile tuberous-root crops on Earth. However, the postharvest storage properties of cassava tuberous root mean that it is perishable through a process known as postharvest physiological deterioration (PPD), which seriously affects its starch quality. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the transcriptional regulatory activity of cassava against the PPD response is necessary in order to extract key molecular mechanisms related to PPD tolerance. In this study, we found that RYG1 tuberous roots showed delayed PPD compared to those of SC8. In addition, RYG1 roots maintained a more stable cell wall structure after storage than those of SC8. The transcriptome changes in tuberous roots were analyzed for both RYG1 and SC8 after 21 days of storage (SR and SS) compared to fresh (FR and FS) by the RNA-Seq method. The total number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the various comparisons of these four samples ranged from 68 to 3847. Of these, a total of 2008 co-DEGs in SR vs. SS were shared by either SR vs. FR or SS vs. FS. GO and KEGG enrichment analysis revealed that upregulated co-DEGs in SR vs. SS were mainly enriched in photosynthesis, protein processing, hormone and cutin, suberine and wax biosynthesis. By contrast, the downregulated co-DEGs were mainly related to cell wall organization, starch and sucrose metabolism, galactose metabolism, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, diterpenoid biosynthesis, cysteine and methionine metabolism and flavonoid biosynthesis. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks of the co-DEGs showed a complex interaction of genes in different pathways, and 16 hub genes were characterized to have a degree in excess of 15, among which eight genes were associated with photosynthesis. These results provide new information for the study of cassava resistance to PPD and lay a foundation for the further molecular breeding of storage-tolerant cassava varieties.

Abstract
Two common psychiatric disorders, schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BP), confer lifelong disability and collectively affect 2% of the world population. Because the diagnosis of psychiatry is based only on symptoms, developing more effective methods for the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders is a major international public health priority. Furthermore, SCZ and BP overlap considerably in terms of symptoms and risk genes. Therefore, the clarity of the underlying etiology and pathology remains lacking for these two disorders. Although many studies have been conducted, a classification model with higher accuracy and consistency was found to still be necessary for accurate diagnoses of SCZ and BP. In this study, a comprehensive dataset was combined from five independent transcriptomic studies. This dataset comprised 120 patients with SCZ, 101 patients with BP, and 149 healthy subjects. The partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) method was applied to identify the gene signature among multiple groups, and 341 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. Then, the disease relevance of these DEGs was systematically performed, including (α) the great disease relevance of the identified signature, (β) the hub genes of the protein-protein interaction network playing a key role in psychiatric disorders, and (γ) gene ontology terms and enriched pathways playing a key role in psychiatric disorders. Finally, a popular multi-class classifier, support vector machine (SVM), was applied to construct a novel multi-class classification model using the identified signature for SCZ and BP. Using the independent test sets, the classification capacity of this multi-class model was assessed, which showed this model had a strong classification ability.

The role of hydrogen water in delaying ripening of banana fruit during postharvest storage. Food Chem 2022; 373:131590. Abstract
Experiments were conducted to identify the role of hydrogen water (HW) in banana fruit ripening. Banana fruit soaked with 0.8 ppm HW showed longer ripening than control fruit. HW treatment significantly reduced ethylene production and respiratory rate, and inhibited the expressions of ethylene synthesis- and signaling-related genes. Similarly, HW treatment inhibited the down-regulation of chlorophylls binding proteins and delayed the increase of chromaticity a*, b* and L* in banana peel. Furthermore, HW-treated peel exhibited lower expressions of cell wall degradation-related genes and higher levels of fruit firmness, pectin, hemicellulose and lignin. In addition, HW-treated pulp exhibited higher levels of starch, lower level of total soluble solids (TSS) and lower expression of flavor-related genes. Microstructural observation further confirmed that HW treatment delayed the degradations of starch and cell walls. Those results indicated that HW treatment delayed banana ripening via the role of ethylene in relation to degreening, flavor and softening.

Abstract
Plant heat stress response is a multi-factorial trait that is precisely regulated by the complex web of transcription factors from various families that modulate heat stress responsive gene expression. Global warming due to climate change affects plant growth and development throughout its life cycle. Adds to this, the frequent occurrence of heat waves is drastically reducing the global crop yield. Molecular plant scientists can help crop breeders by providing genetic markers associated with stress resistance. Plant heat stress response (HSR), however, is a multi-factorial trait and using a single stress resistance trait might not be ideal to develop thermotolerant crops. Transcription factors participate in regulation of plant biological processes and environmental stress responses. Recent studies have revealed that plant HSR is precisely regulated by the complex web of transcription factors from various families. These transcription factors enhance plant heat stress tolerance by regulating the expression level of several stress-responsive genes independently or in cross talk with different other transcription factors. This review explores how signaling pathways triggered by heat stress are regulated by multiple transcription factor families. To our knowledge, we for the first time analyze the role of major transcription factor families in plant HSR along with their regulatory mechanisms. In the end, we will also discuss the potential of emerging technologies to improve thermotolerance in plants.

Abstract
Wood decomposition is a fundamental process of the carbon cycle in forest ecosystems and differs under varying environmental conditions. However, it remains unclear whether exposure situation and litter removal affect wood decomposition, especially in subtropical forests. Therefore, we chose wood from four dominant species and carried out an experiment with treatments consisting of placing wood in ground contact with and without litter input and above ground exposure. The experiment was performed for 2.5 consecutive years in the subtropical forest of Southwest China to reveal the potential effects of microenvironmental changes due to above ground exposure and nutrient input changes due to litter removal. In this study, neither above ground exposure nor litter removal significantly changed the fungal communities, microbial respiration rates or decomposition rates of the wood, but significant differences among tree species were observed. The abundance of Ascomycota (70.2%) was higher than that of Basidiomycota (24.3%), and there was a significant negative relationship between their abundances, suggesting competition. Moreover, negative (Ascomycota) and positive (Basidiomycota) relationships with microbial respiration and explained 21.5 and 25.5% of the variation in microbial respiration, respectively. The wood density was directly controlled by the sugar, cellulose, and lignin contents and influenced the water content in the wood. The abundances of saprotrophic and pathotrophic fungi were significantly and directly regulated by the water content of the wood. The abundance of pathotrophic fungi was unaffected by wood traits, but these fungi may limit saprotrophic fungal colonization, thereby affecting microbial respiration and decomposition processes. We confirmed that the saprotrophic fungal abundance, rather than fungal diversity, determined wood microbial respiration. These results are of great significance for the comprehensive assessment of wood decomposition and the carbon cycle in subtropical forests, although long-term fungal community dynamics and decomposition rates under different conditions require further study.

Abstract
This research investigated a synthetic amendment to improve composting and resource recycling of pig manure and biogas residue. We further examined whether adding a synthetic amendment impacts the microbial ecosystem in the composted materials. Three mixing ratios were used to investigate composting performance: no synthetic amendment (T0), 5% synthetic amendment (T1), and 10% synthetic amendment (T2) (T1 and T2 were measured as a wet weight ratio). There were no significant differences in the fundamental characteristics between composting products in T0 and T1. The moisture content of composting material in T0, T1, and T2 significantly decreased from a baseline of approximately 65% to 35.5%, 37.3%, and 55.9%, respectively. Meanwhile, the germination index significantly increased to 111.6%, 155.6%, and 62.3%, respectively. When an optimal proportion of synthetic amendment was added, T1 showed high degree of humification, lignocellulase activities, and effective biodegradation. Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes were the dominant bacteria, while Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were the dominant fungi in all treatment groups. Amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism, glycolysis, starch, and sucrose metabolism were among the primary pathways in predicted functions. The synthetic amendment can generate a mature composting product and can be reused or recycled to conserve resources.

Abstract
Plants are extensively well-thought-out as the main source for nourishing natural life on earth. In the natural environment, plants have to face several stresses, mainly heat stress (HS), chilling stress (CS) and freezing stress (FS) due to adverse climate fluctuations. These stresses are considered as a major threat for sustainable agriculture by hindering plant growth and development, causing damage, ultimately leading to yield losses worldwide and counteracting to achieve the goal of "zero hunger" proposed by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Notably, this is primarily because of the numerous inequities happening at the cellular, molecular and/or physiological levels, especially during plant developmental stages under temperature stress. Plants counter to temperature stress via a complex phenomenon including variations at different developmental stages that comprise modifications in physiological and biochemical processes, gene expression and differences in the levels of metabolites and proteins. During the last decade, omics approaches have revolutionized how plant biologists explore stress-responsive mechanisms and pathways, driven by current scientific developments. However, investigations are still required to explore numerous features of temperature stress responses in plants to create a complete idea in the arena of stress signaling. Therefore, this review highlights the recent advances in the utilization of omics approaches to understand stress adaptation and tolerance mechanisms. Additionally, how to overcome persisting knowledge gaps. Shortly, the combination of integrated omics, genome editing, and speed breeding can revolutionize modern agricultural production to feed millions worldwide in order to accomplish the goal of "zero hunger."

Abstract
Biodrying in conjunction with compound stone amendment was used to treat kitchen waste, which improved biodrying. After 16 days, the pile moisture content decreased from 68.8% to 23.0%. Lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose concentrations decreased from 104.6 mg g-1 d.b., 322.9 mg g-1 d.b. and 155.9 mg g-1 d.b., respectively, to 74.0 mg g-1 d.b., 224.8 mg g-1 d.b. and 134.5 mg g-1 d.b., respectively. The Shannon index for bacteria increased from 2.5 to 3.1, while for fungi, it decreased from 4.6 to 0.6. The relative abundances of Amino Acid Metabolism and Carbohydrate Metabolism exceeded 7%. The thermophilic phase during the process inactivated the pathogenic microorganisms, increased the bacterial diversity, decreased the fungal diversity, and potentially improved the metabolism of nutrients, including amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids and vitamins. The biomarker analysis and predicated protein sequences provide genetic evidence to elucidate why the thermophilic phase is the peak time for nutrient metabolism.

Abstract
Raisins are a popular and nutritious snack that is produced through the dehydration of postharvest grape berries under high temperature (HT). However, the response of the endogenous metabolism of white grape varieties to postharvest dehydration under different temperature have not been fully elucidated to date. In this study, the white grape cultivar ‘Xiangfei’ was chosen to investigate the effect of dehydration at 50 °C, 40 °C, and 30 °C on the transcriptomic programme and metabolite profiles of grape berries. Postharvest dehydration promoted the accumulation of soluble sugar components and organic acids in berries. The content of gallic acid and its derivatives increased during the dehydration process and the temperature of 40 °C was the optimal for flavonoids and proanthocyanidins accumulation. High-temperature dehydration stress might promote the accumulation of gallic acid by increasing the expression levels of their biosynthesis related genes and regulating the production of NADP+ and NADPH. Compared with that at 30 °C, dehydration at 40 °C accelerated the transcription programme of 7654 genes and induced the continuous upregulation of genes related to the heat stress response and redox homeostasis in each stage. The results of this study indicate that an appropriate dehydration temperature should be selected and applied when producing polyphenols-rich raisins.

Abstract
Glutaredoxins (GRXs) are disulfide oxidoreductases that are involved in various biological processes. However, little information on the role of GRXs in the regulation of fruit ripening and the response to stress is available. In this study, we isolated 64 GRX genes from banana genome. Their encoded GRX proteins could be classified into four classes: CC, CGFS, CPYC and GRL types. The distribution and synteny of these GRXs on chromosomes, the gene structures, the promoter sequences, and the possible protein subcellular localizations were characterized. Molecular interaction network analysis suggested that MaGRX might interact with glutathione reductase (GR), sulfiredoxin, peroxiredoxin (Prx), and NADPH-dependent thioredoxin reductase C (NTRC), contributing to the antioxidative defense of banana fruit. MicroRNA prediction showed that MaGRX genes might be targeted by different miRNAs. Transcriptome analysis characterized the expression profiles of different MaGRX genes during banana fruit ripening, and in response to different storage stresses. The results suggested that CC-type, CPYC-type and GRL-type MaGRXs might be more active than CGFS-type MaGRXs during banana fruit ripening and the response to stress. Moreover, MaGRX6/7/9/11/17/23/28 and MaGRL3/16/19 might play important roles in regulating fruit ripening or in response to low and high temperature, or Fusarium proliferatum infection.

Abstract
Harvested banana fruit ripened under warm temperatures above 24 °C remain green peel, leading to severe economic loss. E3 ubiquitin-ligases, as the major components in the ubiquitination pathway, have been implicated to play important roles in temperature-stress responses. However, the molecular mechanism underlying high temperature-triggered stay-green ripening bananas in association with E3 ubiquitin-ligases, remains largely unknown. In this study, a RING-type E3 ubiquitin ligase termed MaLUL2, was isolated and characterized from banana fruit. The MaLUL2 gene contains 1095 nucleotides and encodes a protein with 365 amino acids. The MaLUL2 protein contains a domain associated with RING2 (DAR2) and a RING domain, which are the typical characteristics of RING-type E3 ligases. MaLUL2 expression was up-regulated during high temperature-induced green ripening. Subcellular localization showed that MaLUL2 localized in the nucleus, cytoplasm, and plasma membrane. MaLUL2 displayed E3 ubiquitin ligase activity in vitro. More importantly, transient overexpression of MaLUL2 in banana fruit peel increased the level of ubiquitination in vivo and led to a stay-green phenotype, accompanying with decreased expression of chlorophyll catabolic genes. Collectively, these findings suggest that MaLUL2 might act as a negative regulator of chlorophyll degradation and provide novel insights into the regulatory mechanism of high temperature-induced green ripening bananas.

Abstract
Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) is extensively cultivated all over the world for its economic value. During curing and storage, senescence occurs, which is associated with physiological and biochemical changes in postharvest plant organs. However, the molecular mechanisms involved in accelerated senescence due to high temperatures in tobacco leaves during curing need further elaboration. We studied molecular mechanisms of senescence in tobacco leaves exposed to high temperature during curing (Fresh, 38 °C and 42 °C), revealed by isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ) for the proteomic profiles of cultivar Bi'na1. In total, 8903 proteins were identified, and 2034 (1150 up-regulated and 1074 down-regulated) differentially abundant proteins (DAPs) were obtained from tobacco leaf samples. These DAPs were mainly involved in posttranslational modification, protein turnover, energy production and conversion. Sugar- and energy-related metabolic biological processes and pathways might be critical regulators of tobacco leaves exposed to high temperature during senescence. High-temperature stress accelerated tobacco leaf senescence mainly by down-regulating photosynthesis-related pathways and degrading cellular constituents to maintain cell viability and nutrient recycling. Our findings provide a valuable inventory of novel proteins involved in senescence physiology and elucidate the protein regulatory network in postharvest organs exposed to high temperatures during flue-curing.
