Defining and understanding the relationship between professional identity and interprofessional responsibility: implications for educating health and social care students

Interprofessional education in cardiothoracic surgery: a narrative review

Interprofessional education, an approach where healthcare professionals from various disciplines learn with, from, and about each other, is widely recognized as an important strategy for improving collaborative practice and patient outcomes. This narrative review explores the current state and future directions of interprofessional education in cardiothoracic surgery. We conducted a literature search using the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, focusing on English-language articles published after 2000. Our qualitative synthesis identified key themes related to interprofessional education interventions, outcomes, and challenges. The integration of interprofessional education in cardiothoracic surgery training programs varies across regions, with a common focus on teamwork and interpersonal communication. Simulation-based training has emerged as a leading modality for cultivating these skills in multidisciplinary settings, with studies showing improvements in team performance, crisis management, and patient safety. However, significant hurdles remain, including professional socialization, hierarchies, stereotypes, resistance to role expansion, and logistical constraints. Future efforts in this field should prioritize deeper curricular integration, continuous faculty development, strong leadership support, robust outcome evaluation, and sustained political and financial commitment. The integration of interprofessional education in cardiothoracic surgery offers considerable potential for enhancing patient care quality, but realizing this vision requires a multifaceted approach. This approach must address individual, organizational, and systemic factors to build an evidence-based framework for implementation.

Interprofessional Curriculum Delivery: Experience of a Primary Care Education Program

Few post-graduate training programs offer a comprehensive curriculum that includes structured clinical experiences to teach interprofessional care. To address this need, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Academic Affiliations funded the Centers of Excellence in Primary Care Education (CoEPCE) from 2011-2019 to provide interprofessional curricula for health profession trainees (HPTs), including physician residents, nurse practitioner residents, pharmacy residents, and psychology residents. We examined changes over time in curricular domains, system impacts, and program practices based on HPT survey data and the qualitative evaluation of narrative feedback. An annual survey was administered to participants. Indirect standardized ratios were calculated for interprofessional professional education (IPE) program domains, system impacts, and program practices. Qualitative responses were coded based on curricular domains and key program components. The study cohort included 369 HPTs. Site and profession standardized indirect ratios across all professions indicated improvements in curricular domains, system impacts, and program practices, with significant differences observed for associated health HPTs as compared to other HPTs for performance improvement. Qualitative data indicated that profession was associated with differences in perceptions of the curriculum. Although improvements occurred over time, our findings support the need for the thoughtful consideration of profession-specific identity characteristics when designing interprofessional curricula.

Interprofessional education for healthcare professionals. A BEME realist review of what works, why, for whom and in what circumstances in undergraduate health sciences education: BEME Guide No. 83

AIM

To provide an evidence-informed program theory (PT) for Interprofessional Education (IPE) that adds to the knowledge base of how IPE in undergraduate health sciences education works.

METHODS

We undertook a realist review of the literature and synthesis of the evidence combined with stakeholder experience. Our initial program theory (IPT), built around development, delivery and evaluation of IPE interventions, was tested and refined following an in-depth search of the literature and consultation with stakeholders. The literature (2010-2022) was selected based on the realist criteria of relevance and rigor, as well as on conceptual richness of the studies.

RESULTS

Our PT is built upon 124 CMOs (Context of IPE interventions, Mechanisms that fired within that context, and IPE Outcomes), from 58 studies. Our PT comprises an array of elements found in the Context, including traits and behavioral displays of students and facilitators, and discusses four Mechanisms (feeling responsible, feeling enthusiastic/excited, feeling safe to take risks, and feeling ready), which are likely to lead to outcomes related to the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (sub)competencies.

DISCUSSION

Results were linked to learning theories to further build our understanding. The PT can serve as a guide for the development, delivery, and evaluation of IPE interventions.

Navigating interprofessional boundaries: Midwifery students in Canada

The literature on professional socialization focuses on how students adopt and internalize professional identities and values, and assumes that boundary work is essential to learning how best to practice their profession. However, a focus on boundary work in the context of midwifery training - which is embedded in the gendered and hierarchical landscape of maternity care - is lacking. Thus, this article examines how Canadian student-midwives learn to navigate and negotiate interprofessional boundaries. Grounded in a symbolic interactionist approach, it draws on 31 semi-structured qualitative interviews from a mixed-methods national study on midwifery retention, explores how midwifery students make sense of the tensions among midwives, physicians, and nurses, and describes what strategies they utilize when navigating boundaries. Our analysis, based in constructivist grounded theory, revealed that participants learned about interprofessional tensions in clinical placement encounters via direct or indirect interactions with other healthcare professionals, and that strategies to navigate these tensions included educating others about midwifery training and adopting a learner identity. This article proposes that the process of professional socialization enables to reshape professional boundaries and that students are not only learners but also agents of change. These findings may yield practical applications in health education by highlighting opportunities for improving interprofessional collaborations.

Activities to promote empathy for patients among pharmacy learners: A scoping review

BACKGROUND

Provider empathy has been shown to be directly linked to improved patient outcomes. The objective of this scoping review of the literature was to identify and describe learning activities that promote empathy for patients among pharmacy learners.

METHODS

This scoping review was conducted using the following inclusion criteria: publication in English, activities conducted in any academic pharmacy training program (professional degree program, experiential, residency, or fellowship), description of the learning activity(ies) provided, and focus on the experience of empathy/caring/compassion for patients, either human or animal. Articles were excluded if they focused only on skills such as empathic responding or if they did not describe the learning experience. All study designs other than reviews were included.

RESULTS

The scoping review revealed 89 full-text articles that met the inclusion criteria. Included studies demonstrated a wide variety of approaches to the design of learning experiences as well as methods of measurement of empathy. Various types of learning modalities have been used to develop empathy in pharmacy learners, with reflection being the most common. A large proportion of studies that assessed empathy development used quasi-experimental or qualitative designs and did not report tests of statistical significance, which would make it difficult to compare the effectiveness of the different learning activities.

IMPLICATIONS

A variety of approaches have been used among pharmacy learners to develop empathy for patients. Due to the high level of variability in approaches, more rigorous studies are needed to assess the effectiveness of these learning activities.

Social and healthcare students' competence in patient-oriented care enhanced during interprofessional practice: A scoping review

AIM

This scoping review aimed to synthesise the findings of previous literature related to social and healthcare students' competence in patient-oriented care in interprofessional practice by attending multidisciplinary student teams.

BACKGROUND

Learning about patient-oriented care requires the comprehensive consideration of patients' physical, emotional, social and economic aspects to offer the best need-based care. Multidisciplinary student teams in the clinical practice may support learning patient-oriented care; however, the current knowledge is fragmented.

DESIGN

Scoping review METHODS: Data (N = 1548) were gathered from four databases, PubMed, MEDLINE, SocIndex and CINAHL, without start-date limitation until the end of December 2022. One article was found on the publisher's webpage recommendations. The selected studies (N = 15) answered the research questions and met the inclusion criteria. Quality assessment of the studies was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Quality Assessment Checklist. A thematic analysis process was used for data extraction and synthesis of results.

RESULTS

Perspectives on patient-oriented care competencies were analysed for both students and patients cared for by a multidisciplinary student team. The themes described students' profound understanding of professional roles and responsibilities in patient-oriented care, collaborative patient-oriented care skills, improved interprofessional communication and reported patient experiences.

CONCLUSIONS

Interprofessional practice versatility develops students' competence in patient-oriented care. Guaranteeing patient-oriented care requires a broad understanding of patients' comprehensive care needs, which can be addressed through multidisciplinary collaboration. Patients' experiences toward interprofessional student practice are mainly positive. Further research is needed to assess the impact of different interprofessional education methods on students' patient-oriented care competence using valid instruments and the long-term effects of students' competence in patient-oriented care.

Impact of Pre-Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) Curriculum on Student Pharmacists' Professional Identity Formation

OBJECTIVE

To (1) evaluate changes in student pharmacists' professional identity during a curriculum prior to advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs) and (2) describe the components of a pre-APPE curriculum that positively and negatively influenced students' professional identity formation (PIF).

METHODS

The University of Washington School of Pharmacy launched a new curriculum in 2019 featuring components intentionally designed to support students' PIF. The Macleod-Clark Professional Identity Scale (MCPIS) was administered to the class of 2023 before starting pharmacy school (pre) and upon completion of the pre-APPE curriculum (post). The postsurvey also contained 2 open-response questions asking students to identify the most positive and negative influences on their PIF. Mean pre- and post-responses were calculated for all MCPIS items and each MCPIS item and compared using paired t tests. Responses to the open-ended questions were sorted into categories using inductive thematic analysis and frequencies were calculated.

RESULTS

A total of 99 students (96%) completed both surveys. Mean MCPIS pre-scores and post-scores were both 3.3, indicating no statistically significant change in professional identity. The most frequently reported positive influences on PIF were didactic coursework (40%), experiential learning (30%), and student organizations (27%). The most frequently reported negative influences were didactic coursework (27%), none (25%), and perceptions of the pharmacy profession (22%).

CONCLUSION

Students' overall professional identity, as measured by the MCPIS, did not change during the pre-APPE curriculum. Didactic coursework had the most common positive and negative influence on professional identity prior to APPEs.

Pharmacy from the perspectives of other health professions: An intervention to foster professional identity among freshmen pharmacy students

Background

Professional identity is crucial for the development of pharmacy students' professional confidence, learning motivation and future career choices. However, how to develop students' professional identity in pharmacy education is an underdeveloped field of research. The critical component of professional identity has been considered formed as a result of stepwise socialization. Therefore, pharmacy professional identity might be influenced by associations with other health care professionals, such as physicians and nurses, who are involved in health care collaboration with pharmacists.

Objectives

This work aimed to investigate the effect of a student-led interview intervention called "Pharmacy from the perspectives of other health professions" as an intervention on pharmacy freshmen's perceptions and positivity toward the pharmacy profession.

Methods

In this prospective pre/postintervention study, the effect of the interview intervention on students' job preferences as well as attitudes toward the pharmacy profession and pharmacists' role in health care was evaluated among 70 first-year pharmacy undergraduates equally divided into intervention and control groups using a self-developed questionnaire.

Results

Compared with the controls, the numbers of respondents reporting no specific reasons for selecting the pharmacy profession and stating that they were unclear about their preferred post-graduation work sector were significantly reduced after the intervention. Participating in the intervention increased the number of students who agreed or strongly agreed that they would have a fulfilling and socially respectable career. Significantly more students in the intervention group agreed with the pharmacists' role in health care as well as the current situation of pharmacy human resources than in the control group.

Conclusion

This student-led interview intervention could be applied as an effective tool for improving students' professional identity and positivity in pharmacy education.

Teaching interprofessional collaboration among future healthcare professionals

Healthcare has become more complex in recent years. Such complexity can best be addressed by interprofessional teams. We argue that to ensure successful communication and cooperation in interprofessional teams, it is important to establish interprofessional education in health-related study programs. More precisely, we argue that students in health-related programs need to develop interprofessional competencies and a common language, experience interprofessional contact, build inclusive identities and establish beliefs in the benefit of interprofessional diversity. We give examples how these goals can be implemented in interprofessional education. We also discuss challenges and future avenues for respective research healthcare professionals.

The VOTIS, part 2: Using a video-reflexive assessment activity to foster dispositional learning in interprofessional education

Effective interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) requires a new way of working characterized by distributed leadership skills, shared decision-making, and the adoption of uniprofessional and interprofessional identities. Health professional educators are tasked with preparing clinicians for IPCP through interprofessional education (IPE). Numerous IPE teaching interventions have been developed, ranging in length from hours to semesters, designed to introduce students to interprofessional ways of working - usually evaluated in terms of student satisfaction, perceptions of other disciplines and conceptual knowledge. However, working interprofessionally also requires integrating dispositional knowledge into one's emerging interprofessional habits and values. In this paper, we describe a learning activity, inspired by a new video-reflexive methodology, designed to foster dispositional learning of interprofessional skills using a video-based assessment tool: the Video Observation Tool for Interprofessional Skills (VOTIS). Based on focus group and interview data, we suggest the activity's usefulness in fostering conceptual, procedural and dispositional knowledge, as well as reflexive feedback literacy. Overall, our qualitative evaluation of the VOTIS suggests the merits of drawing on video-reflexive methodology and pedagogical theory to re-imagine IPE as a dynamic process, requiring the development of interprofessional skills that must be appropriated into students' emerging (inter)professional identities.

Preparing Pharmacy Educators as Expedition Guides to Support Professional Identity Formation in Pharmacy Education

Objective. To provide an educator-friendly travel guide for supporting pharmacy students' lifelong journey to professional identity formation.Findings. In contrast to professionalism, which has emphasized externally visible behaviors, professional identity focuses on the internalization of the attitudes, standards, and behavioral norms of a profession, such that one "thinks, acts, and feels" like a member of that profession. Identity, whether personal or professional, is continuously developed in part during interactions with others and in response to internal and external feedback on those interactions. Educators play a critical role in helping students navigate the "provocative moments" (eg, transitions, dissonance) that accompany identity formation. To help educators travel with purpose, several identity formation theories suggest means of creating learning experiences and supporting the development of a professional identity. Additionally, guidebooks for the trip (ie, published literature) provide examples of didactic and experiential teaching approaches that can be used to promote professional identity formation. While further exploration and research are necessary, traveling this journey with colleagues can help members of the Academy succeed in sustainably and effectively infusing intentional professional identity formation within pharmacy education and training.Summary. There are myriad ways for educators to develop and support professional identity formation, which can present a challenge when defining the role that educators play in this complex, dynamic process. Educators must understand the reasoning behind various approaches and the common dialogue used to engage and support learners as their expedition guides on the lifelong journey to professional identity formation.

Re-opening Pandora's box: Who owns professionalism and is it time for a 21st century definition?

BACKGROUND

The concept of professionalism is dominant within health care education and the lives of practising clinicians globally, and yet there is no single agreed definition nor framework applied universally across the health care professions. This article questions how much attention is paid to where definitions of the concept of professionalism came from and whether the accepted norms within the dominant discourses are still truly applicable to a 21st century workforce.

METHOD

Taking a critical look at the existing body of literature on professionalism using a locus of medical education, this article reviews who the dominant voices have been in the creation of current understandings of professionalism. Using a pragmatic and targeted approach, regulatory body definitions of professionalism from across the world are compared to demonstrate the complexities of finding a universally accepted definition of the concept.

RESULTS

The article suggests that the extant definitions are grounded but also stuck in a background of Western, White, heteronormative view of society and the professions of the past and argues that we need to better understand the expectations of professionalism from the perspectives of those who now work in health care and health care education, as well as reviewing the views of the "public" within this debate.

CONCLUSIONS

By reopening the "Pandora's box" of professionalism, this article argues that we can improve the quality of definitions-and thus application-of professionalism for health care professionals and patients.

Evidence for Professional Conceptualization in Science as an Important Component of Science Identity

Experience in research facilitates development of science identity and encourages undergraduate student persistence along the pathway to careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Participation in authentic research can foster identity development by influencing a sense of belonging, recognition, interest, and performance and competence in science. We examine science identity in a group of five community college women in marine science during a 2-year study in which students participated in a research experience. We used interviews, surveys, identity artifacts, and significant circles before and after the research experience in a thematic analysis to explore identities and examine their intentions, interests, perspectives, and aspirations for a future career. Participation in research provided opportunities for students to gain conceptual understanding of themselves and their abilities in science as well as explore and clarify their professional interests. This work builds upon our current understanding by providing evidence that conceptualization of career trajectories and self as a science professional is an important component of identity. Exploring career options and developing professional conceptualization are critical components in science research experiences and warrants additional study to understand the role of professional conceptualization in shaping student trajectories in STEM.

Challenges and opportunities for educating health professionals after the COVID-19 pandemic

The education of health professionals substantially changed before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. A 2010 Lancet Commission examined the 100-year history of health-professional education, beginning with the 1910 Flexner report. Since the publication of the Lancet Commission, several transformative developments have happened, including in competency-based education, interprofessional education, and the large-scale application of information technology to education. Although the COVID-19 pandemic did not initiate these developments, it increased their implementation, and they are likely to have a long-term effect on health-professional education. They converge with other societal changes, such as globalisation of health care and increasing concerns of health disparities across the world, that were exacerbated by the pandemic. In this Health Policy, we list institutional and instructional reforms to assess what has happened to health-professional education since the publication of the Lancet Commission and how the COVID-19 pandemic altered the education process.

Pharmacist trainees narrow scope of interprofessional collaboration and communication in hospital practice

Early curricular exposure to interprofessional education (IPE) is intended to acclimatize health professional trainees to shared-care in the practice settings they will ultimately join. However, IPE activities typically reside outside actual organizational and social systems in which interprofessional care is delivered. We aimed to explore how pharmacist trainees experience collaborator and communicator competency roles during team-based workplace-based learning. Participants maintained written diaries reflecting on interprofessional collaboration and communication during an eight-week hospital clerkship. Diary entries and transcripts from semi-structured follow-up interviews were analyzed from the social constructivist perspective using reflective thematic analysis. Participant accounts of on-ward activities represented most collaborator and communicator roles outlined in pharmacy and interprofessional competency frameworks, but were predominantly between the pharmacist trainee and physicians. Pharmacist trainees did not routinely engage with other health professions on a daily basis. Additionally, reported encounters with other team members were typically information exchanges and not episodes of authentic interdependent or shared care. Interactions were almost completely devoid of perceived interpersonal or role conflict. These findings offer insight into how pharmacist trainees perceive and develop competencies for team-based care. Further work is required to understand how such limited scope of interprofessional communication and collaboration might ultimately impair quality patient care.

Interprofessional identity in clinicians: A scoping review

Interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) has been recognized as invaluable in delivering safe, high-quality patient care with finite resources. However, despite a decade of advances in interprofessional (IP) research, policy, and competency frameworks, IPCP does not always occur in practice. One reason may be the influence of a clinician's identity in an IP context. The purpose of this scoping review was to understand the nature of IP identity in healthcare clinicians. The PRISMA framework was used to support a comprehensive search strategy and screening of 1746 articles. Inclusion criteria included original research, theses, and reviews, a primary focus on IP identity or professional identity (PI) in an IP team, and a focus on health professionals, including students transitioning to practice. Ninety-five papers met the eligibility criteria, though once charted, just four of the 95 papers focused on IP identity in clinicians. Three further papers examined shared team identity, 25 papers referred to, but did not focus on IP identity, and the remaining 63 papers explored PI in an IP team. While limited studies on clinician IP identity restrict conclusive findings, patterns were identified to direct further research on the nature of IP identity in clinicians. These include values and beliefs, individual and personal factors, profession and professional experience, education, socialization, context, leadership, and the process of IP identity development. While identity is undeniably central to being a clinician, the values, beliefs, attributes, and experiences that contribute to clinician IP identity, how clinician IP identity develops, and factors that influence IP identity remain unclear. The results of this review highlight the value of further investigation of the nature of IP identity, the interplay between PI and IP identity, and identity in an IP context.

Student pharmacists' perceptions of their professional identity

INTRODUCTION

Professional identity describes the internal feeling of belonging to a community, such that someone "thinks, feels, and acts" like a member of a profession. Clear professional identity formation can improve the transition from school to work. However, there is limited knowledge about student pharmacists' perceptions of their professional identity. This research aimed to identify and compare student pharmacists' perceptions of their professional identity and to compare those perceptions across class cohorts.

METHODS

Data were collected using an online questionnaire that incorporated professional identity labels drawn from previous research. The questionnaire was administered over four weeks to all student pharmacists at one United States pharmacy school. Data were analyzed using chi-square tests.

RESULTS

One hundred sixteen responses were received (24% response rate) from the four graduating class years (2020-2023). Respondents were predominantly female (73%), Caucasian (43%), and had obtained at least a bachelor's degree (58%). "Medicine Adviser" was the most frequently selected professional identity (38%). "Business Person" was the least frequently selected professional identity (0%). There was no relationship between professional identities and cohorts of students.

CONCLUSIONS

Student pharmacists in this study selected multiple professional identities, suggesting pharmacy students and the profession have yet to consolidate their own identity. There was no relationship between student pharmacists' professional identity selections and cohort, suggesting that professional identity formation did not change as a result of moving through the didactic curriculum. Additional training, curricular modification, and faculty support may be warranted to support student pharmacists with their professional identity development.

The relationship between social media usage by undergraduate nursing students and development of their professional identity: A correlational study

BACKGROUND

How nursing students perceive themselves as potential nurses in the future is defined as their nursing professional identity. Many undergraduate nursing students present positive attitudes regarding the use of social media. However, the influence of social media usage by undergraduate nursing students on the development of their professional identity is yet to be determined.

OBJECTIVE

To determine the relationship between social media usage by undergraduate nursing students and the development of their professional identity.

DESIGN

Descriptive, correlational, cross-sectional study.

SETTING(S)

Two universities in western Saudi Arabia.

PARTICIPANTS

Undergraduate nursing students who used social media.

METHODS

An online questionnaire was designed, and its contents were validated. It was then distributed via a Qualtrics link to students' email addresses and via social media between 4th September 2019 and 28th October 2019. Descriptive analysis including frequencies, percentages, medians, and interquartile ranges were reported. Additionally, a number of non-parametric tests were conducted to investigate the relationships in question.

RESULTS

In total, 484 questionnaires were included in the analysis. The participants who used social media for educational (p = 0.004), or for professional purposes (p = 0.015) had high scores on the PI scale. The professional identity scores were also positively associated among the participants who followed nurses (p < 0.001), shared their nursing experiences (p < 0.001), and acted as societal educators about the nursing profession (p < 0.001) on social media platforms.

CONCLUSIONS

Engagement with social media positively influenced undergraduate nursing students in the development of their professional identity. However, it is notable that the pedagogy of nursing education has been slow to adopt social media into nursing curricula. Nursing students require guidance in terms of how to use social media for their professional development.

[Interprofessional socialization and collaboration on an interprofessional training ward - a reconstructive analysis]

Interprofessional education has gained relevance in German-speaking countries, and interprofessional training wards (IPTW) can contribute to the acquisition of interprofessional competencies and thereby improve interprofessional collaborative practice and patient care. Professional socialization and identity development have proven to be critical for future clinical practice in addition to competency development. According to Khalili (2013) socialization through interprofessional education can result in a dual identity, i. e., a sense of belonging to one's own profession as well as to the interprofessional health care team. The aim of this study was to analyse to which extent interprofessional socialization takes place on the Interprofessional Training Ward in Heidelberg (HIPSTA) and how medical students in their practical year and nursing trainees in their third year of training experience their placement there. For this purpose, five semi-structured group discussions were conducted with undergraduates at the end of their placement on HIPSTA and analysed using the documentary method. Typification resulted in two types that differ with regard to interprofessional socialization. The type interprofessional responsiblepersons is characterized by the joint assumption of responsibility for patient care, open communication with each other and joint structuring of collaboration, which contributed to a removal of barriers and interprofessional role learning; the type interprofessional learners is characterized by their focus on learning processes and their anticipation of barriers between the professional groups, which would be relevant for future collaboration. All groups experienced a sense of belonging to their peer-student/learner group, regardless of their different professional background. Their professional identity underwent further development. These results show that placement on an IPTW does not warrant interprofessional socialization processes and the development of a dual identity. However, it can be a first step in the right direction.

Use of Established Guidelines When Reporting on Interprofessional Team-Based Learning in Health Professions Student Education: A Systematic Review

PURPOSE

Team-based learning (TBL) has gained popularity across the health professions, including in interprofessional contexts. The authors conducted this systematic review to summarize the published evidence regarding the extent, design, and practice of interprofessional TBL within health professions (including medical) degree programs to inform interprofessional education (IPE) educators and curricula designers.

METHOD

In June 2020, the authors searched PubMed Central, CINAHL, Web of Science, and ERIC for original research articles describing TBL programs with student representation from multiple health professions degree programs that were published between January 2010 and June 2020. Included articles underwent data extraction for study characteristics (e.g., country of origin, topics covered, class descriptors) and the 7 core design elements of TBL: team formation, readiness assurance, immediate feedback, sequencing of in-class problem solving, the 4 Ss (significant problem, same problem, specific choice, and simultaneous reporting), incentive structure, and peer review.

RESULTS

Twelve articles were included. Significant variability was noted in the application and reporting of the 7 core design elements of TBL, which highlighted challenges to the implementation of interprofessional TBL.

CONCLUSIONS

Although the structured format of TBL provides a suitable pedagogy for IPE, this review identified challenges associated with the effective integration of IPE into TBL, including: the unequal distribution of students to teams as a result of there being multiple disciplines from different programs; varied levels of student experience with the pedagogy of TBL; a lack of resources required for large groups of students; timetabling requirements for multiple disciplines from different programs; inability to provide more than 1 TBL session; design of patient cases that suit multiple disciplines; alignment of topics within the curricula of multiple disciplines, programs, and universities; inequities in grading for different students within the same TBL program; and limited opportunity for peer review.

From uniprofessionality to interprofessionality: dual vs dueling identities in healthcare

Healthcare systems are at times still viewed as siloed performances of single professions, wherein some groups hold hierarchical positions based on their expertise and prestige, rather than a collective functioning of interprofessional teams. Current policies, procedures, and regulations in healthcare education and practice seem to contribute to this context in which the various health and social care professions are set in opposition to one another. The historical, and still prominent, uniprofessional education and socialization practices position health and social care professions to view each as rivals and threats toward achieving their profession/al advancement and growth. The transformation from uniprofessionality to interprofessionality in healthcare requires the application of interprofessional socialization not just at the individual level, but also at the professional and system levels. In this process of interprofessional socialization, we need to embrace the uniqueness of each profession while cultivating an interprofessional collaboration culture in the system (dual identity). In so doing, we can facilitate a shifting mind-set, culture, operations, and policies in healthcare to recognize and foster the contribution and accountability of each profession toward achieving the quadruple aim of better care, better health, better value, and better work experience.

Role Perception and Professional Identity of Occupational Therapists Working in Education Systems: Perception du rôle et identité professionnelle des ergothérapeutes qui travaillent dans les systèmes scolaires

BACKGROUND.

Occupational therapists, especially those in education systems, are challenged to define their professional roles and identities.

PURPOSE.

This research evaluated the Role-Perception Questionnaire for Occupational Therapists in the Education System's (RP-OT) psychometric properties, the Professional Identity Scale (PIS) internal consistency among occupational therapists, and relationships among role perception, professional identity, and demographic characteristics.

METHOD.

A sample of 147 occupational therapists in education systems completed the RP-OT and PIS. We conducted exploratory factor analysis and calculated Cronbach alpha to evaluate the RP-OT and PIS psychometric properties. Relationships were examined using Pearson correlation.

FINDINGS.

The RP-OT was found reliable and valid, with medium-to-strong correlations among role perception, professional identity, and demographics. Teamwork in the education system was the major predictor (82%) of professional identity.

IMPLICATIONS.

Teamwork is part of the professional role of occupational therapists in the education system and a significant component for developing their positive professional-identity perception.

Spanish version of the readiness for interprofessional learning scale (RIPLS) in an undergraduate health sciences student context

The Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) has been widely used to measure students' and professionals' attitudes toward interprofessional learning. However, inconsistencies have been reported concerning its validity and reliability. This study aimed to translate, adapt, and validate the RIPLS questionnaire to be applied to Spanish-speaking health sciences students in Chile. Content and construct validity evidence of the newly created Spanish version of the RIPLS scale were analyzed. An exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory (CFA) analysis were conducted, determining goodness-of-fit indexes. Reliability was evaluated through Cronbach's Alpha Coefficient. We assessed sensitivity to change of the RIPLS scale by comparing pre- and post-interprofessional education workshop scores. The EFA showed that there were three factors. In the CFA, most of the standardized factor loadings were higher than 0.3. Regarding internal consistency, Cronbach's Alpha was 0.86. The differences between the total RIPLS scores before and after the workshops were statistically significant. The Spanish version of RIPLS showed evidence of validity and reliability for use amongst health sciences students. The construct was adequately measured and was shown that it could be used to assess the impact of interprofessional education workshops.

Interprofessional teamwork: the role of professional identity and signature pedagogy - a mixed methods study

PURPOSE

One overlooked determinant of interprofessional teamwork is the mobilisation of professional identity. Taking a health or social care practitioner out of their professional silo and placing them in an interprofessional team setting will challenge their professional identity. The theory of signature pedagogy was used to investigate the challenges and what is needed to support practitioners to mobilise their professional identity to maximise teamwork.

DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH

A cross-sectional mixed methods study was undertaken in the form of three focus groups, with members of health and social care teams in Wales, UK. Using nominal group technique, participants explored and ranked the challenges and benefits of mobilising their professional identity within an interprofessional setting.

FINDINGS

Findings on mobilising professional identity were found to be aligned closely with the three signature pedagogy apprenticeships of learning to think and to perform like others in their profession and to act with moral integrity. The biggest challenge facing practitioners was thinking like others in their profession while in an interprofessional team.

RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS

The focus of this study is health and social care teams within Wales, UK, which may limit the results to teams that have a similar representation of professionals.

PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS

Healthcare leaders should be aware of the opportunities to promote mobilisation of professional identity to maximise teamwork. For example, at induction, by introducing the different roles and shared responsibilities. Such practical implications do have consequences for policy as regards interprofessional team development and organisational commitments to adult learning and evaluation.

ORIGINALITY/VALUE

This is the first study of professional identity of interprofessional healthcare and social professionals using signature pedagogy to gain a better understanding of teamwork.

'Whispers and shadows': A critical review of the professional identity literature with respect to minority physicians

OBJECTIVES

Professional identity formation (PIF) is a growing area of research in medical education. However, it is unclear whether the present research base is suitable for understanding PIF in physicians considered to be under-represented in medicine (URM). This meta-ethnography examined the qualitative PIF literature from 2012 to 2019 to assess its capacity to shine light on the experiences of minoritised physicians.

METHODS

Data were gathered using a search of six well-known medical education journals for the term 'professional identit*' in titles, keywords, abstracts and subheadings, delineated with the date range of 2012-2019. All non-relevant abstracts were removed and papers were then further reduced to those that focused only on learners' experiences. This left 67 articles in the final dataset, which were analysed using a collaborative approach among a team of researchers. The team members used their professional expertise as qualitative researchers and personal experiences as minoritised individuals to synthesise and interpret the PIF literature.

RESULTS

Four conceptual categories were identified as impacting PIF: Individual versus Sociocultural Influences; the Formal versus the Hidden Curriculum; Institutional versus Societal Values; and Negotiation of Identity versus Dissonance in Identity. However, a major gap was identified; only one study explored experiences of PIF in URM physicians and there was an almost complete absence of critical stances used to study PIF. Combined, these findings suggest that PIF research is building on existing theories without questioning their validity with reference to minoritised physicians.

CONCLUSIONS

From a post-colonial perspective, the fact that race and ethnicity have been largely absent, invisible or considered irrelevant within PIF research is problematic. A new line of inquiry is needed, one that uses alternative frameworks, such as critical theory, to account for the ways in which power and domination influence PIF for URM physicians in order to foreground how larger sociohistorical issues influence and shape the identities of minoritised physicians.

The impact of interprofessional simulation experiences in occupational and physical therapy education: a qualitative study

Abstract Interprofessional experiences are an essential part of preparing occupational and physical therapy students for clinical practice. Simulation has been used to help students achieve clinical competencies, including interprofessional competencies. The following study aimed to explore the students’ perceptions of an interprofessional simulation experience, identify opportunities for the integration of interprofessional experiences across the curriculum, and document the design elements that positively influenced the outcomes of the interprofessional simulation experience. An exploratory case study design was used to examine the study aims. Focus groups were used to collect qualitative data from 85 graduate-level occupational and physical therapy students. Thematic analysis was completed on the focus group transcripts. Results from the students indicated that they perceived the interprofessional simulation experience to be beneficial to the development of affective skills and role identity. The students identified a desire for increased exposure to interprofessional education experiences throughout the curriculum. The design and implementation of the interprofessional simulation were positively received by students due to the emphasis on creating a realistic experience and despite initial student anxiety related to the experience. Interprofessional simulation is a valuable and appropriate method for engaging students in interprofessional education and developing interprofessional skills based on the results of the current study. Documenting the process of designing and implementing an interprofessional simulation may assist other programs in developing interprofessional simulation opportunities for healthcare students.

'It benefits patient care': the value of practice-based IPE in healthcare curriculums

BACKGROUND

Practice-based interprofessional education (IPE) is essential to prepare students for collaborative working. Pockets of practice-based IPE are integrated into healthcare curriculums in some regions. Yet practice-based IPE is not globally valued as a key element of healthcare curriculums. As students and clinical educators are key stakeholders, this study presents a case example of their experiences in a country where practice-based IPE is at an emergent stage. Their experiential knowledge generated important insights into how practice-based IPE is perceived. This learning can be applied, both locally and further afield, by those seeking to embed practice-based IPE in their placement curriculums.

METHODS

A qualitative case study was conducted at a school of allied health and partner placement sites in Ireland. Data collection comprised two participant observations, 13 interviews and 12 document analyses. Inductive thematic analysis and deductive framework analysis, underpinned by activity theory and Hofstede's cultural dimensions, informed data analysis and interpretations.

RESULTS

Participants are grappling to establish the value of practice-based IPE, illustrated in three themes: clarifying the concept of practice-based IPE, mapping IPE activities and diversifying interprofessionalism. First, ambiguous conceptualisation of why and how to implement practice-based IPE was identified. Highlighting how practice-based IPE improved patient care and safety created a clear rationale for implementation. It was also helpful to demonstrate how adaptations to existing practice education models, rather than entirely new models, could achieve high-quality practice-based IPE. Second, the positioning of practice-base IPE in the placement curriculum was unclear. Overt mapping of practice-based IPE activities onto learning outcomes within assessment tools enhanced its value within practice education. Third, varying levels of professional engagement were noted, perpetuating stereotypes. Creating diverse educator networks and embedding practice-based IPE in organisational strategy may incentivise engagement across a greater range of professions.

CONCLUSIONS

Implementing these recommendations could enhance the value of practice-based IPE and optimise student preparation for collaborative working. Practice-based IPE remains a complex model and the trajectory of embedding in healthcare curriculums will differ globally.

Report of the 2019-2020 AACP Student Affairs Standing Committee

The 2019-2020 Student Affairs Standing Committee addressed charges related to professional identity formation (PIF) in order to set direction and propose action steps consistent with Priority #3.4 of the AACP Strategic Plan, which states "Academic-practice partnerships and pharmacist-involved practice models that lead to the progress of Interprofessional Practice (IPP) are evident and promoted at all colleges and schools of pharmacy." To this end, the committee was charged to 1) outline key elements of PIF, 2) explore the relationship between formal curricular learning activities and co- or extra-curricular activities in supporting PIF, 3) determine the degree to which there is evidence that strong PIF is embedded in student pharmacists' educational experience, and 4) define strategies and draft an action plan for AACP's role in advancing efforts of schools to establish strong PIF in pharmacy graduates. This report describes work of the committee in exploring PIF and provides resources and background information relative to the charges. The committee offers several suggestions and recommendations for both immediate and long-term action by AACP and members to achieve goals related to integrating PIF into pharmacy education. The committee proposes a policy statement relative to the committee charges. Furthermore, the report calls upon the profession to develop a unified identity and incorporate support for PIF into pharmacy education, training, and practice.

Undergraduate nursing students' adoption of the professional identity of nursing through social media use: A qualitative descriptive study

BACKGROUND

Previous research has addressed nursing course components such as clinical placements that affect students' socialisation processes and the development of their professional identities. Social media is an increasingly important factor that has not yet been explored in-depth in terms of its influence on the development of the professional identity of nursing and is a major gap in our knowledge and understanding of undergraduate nurses' development.

OBJECTIVE

To understand the influence of social media usage on the development of undergraduate nursing students' professional identity.

DESIGN

Descriptive qualitative study.

SETTING

Two universities in Saudi Arabia.

PARTICIPANTS

Sixteen undergraduate nursing students.

METHODS

Semi-structured and audio-recorded interviews were undertaken between November 2018 and January 2019. The transcribed data were thematically analysed using NVivo 12.

RESULTS

Three main themes emerged: Learning about nursing professional identity through social media, adopting the identity of nursing, and students sharing their understanding of nursing professional identity via social media. Students used social media to learn about the nursing profession, and this helped them to develop a sense of belonging to the nursing profession. The students also used social media to share their experiences as nursing students and to enhance society's understanding of the importance of the nursing profession.

CONCLUSION

Undergraduate nursing students should be encouraged to develop their professional identity through socialisation. Social media can facilitate the socialisation process of undergraduate nursing students by connecting them with members of the nursing community.

Occupational therapy and physiotherapy students' communicative and collaborative learning in an interprofessional virtual setting

BACKGROUND

Interprofessional learning activities can contribute to preparing students to function in health care teams. Although the importance of communication is acknowledged, there is still a lack of understanding about how students learn to communicate interprofessionally.

AIM

To explore occupational therapist and physiotherapist students learning of skills in interprofessional communication by studying the students' communication while working together with a virtual patient.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The students carried out a virtual patient encounter in pairs of two, using one computer per student, sitting side by side. The students' actions and conversations were recorded as video films, the oral communication was transcribed and analysed using qualitative content analysis.

RESULTS

The students created a social learning environment by posing questions, acknowledging each other and clarifying their professional perspective using familiar professional concepts. Comparing their professional views, students related their peers' statements to their own. Departing from their own profession and using the created open environment, the students' communication led to an interprofessional meaning-making process, with students aiming to understand each other.

CONCLUSIONS AND SIGNIFICANCE

A reciprocal learning situation was created when students worked together in a virtual setting. Communicating and making shared decisions about a patient can facilitate learning how to communicate interprofessionally and improve students' understanding of their own profession.

Using a Mixed Methods Approach to Explore Perceptions of Early Learners in Classroom-Based Interprofessional Education Experiences

Objective. To explore attitudes and learning outcomes among early-level health professions students who completed foundational interprofessional education (IPE) courses. Methods. This study used a mixed methods approach to examine assessment and evaluation data from two student cohorts enrolled in two one-credit, semester-long interprofessional courses taught in fall and spring 2017. Attitudinal changes following the fall course were measured and compared in a retrospective pretest-posttest manner across student disciplines using the Student Perceptions of Interprofessional Clinical Education-Revised Instrument, version 2 (SPICE-R2). Course evaluation comments and narrative reflection assignments for both courses were analyzed qualitatively via data reduction and compilation to identify evidence of learning. Results. Significant increases in positive student perceptions regarding IPE were found, with variation in the increase seen between professions following the first course. Core themes identified in the narrative reflections demonstrated student learning in interprofessional attitudes, communication, professional identity, collaborative behaviors, and systems of care. Conclusion. Student attitudes toward interprofessional learning were more positive following completion of a foundational IPE course. In addition, learning in the course shaped students' professional identities, collaborative behaviors, and understanding of systems of care. These findings suggest value in early IPE and directions for better structuring curriculum and timing of IPE.

Decentralize-Change-Recentralize Model of Drug Information Networks in Health Centers: Decentralized Drug Information Services

Large health centers usually decentralize their services to small self-sufficient sub-centers of care delivery. These small centers are part of an extensive network of practitioners who are connected. The drug information services of independent clinical pharmacists in a health center could be fragmented. Drug information centers thus need to have a new definition of the mode of operation. While maintaining autonomy in information exchange, professionals are integrated to form a large community of practitioners. Technological advancements in communication and access to resources enable efficient collaborations to happen. Immersed in patient-centered collaborative practice environments, networks of professionals integrate drug information services. Drug information networks thus hold a similar philosophy of health centers to decentralize-change-centralize its services. Further research is required to measure the impact of this model of drug information services.

Professional and interprofessional identities: a scoping review

Identity development within the interprofessional field is an emerging area of research. This scoping review aims to establish how professional and interprofessional identities are defined, conceptualized, theorized and measured within the interprofessional literature. Six databases were systematically searched for papers focusing on professional and/or interprofessional identities in interprofessional healthcare and education using a scoping review methodology. A total of 84 papers were included. Most papers discussed professional identity only; the minority discussed both identities. There were three key findings. First, no universal definition of interprofessional identity exists. Second, there is no shared understanding of interprofessional identity and its relationship with professional identity. Third, poor alignment between definitions, conceptualizations, theories and measures of interprofessional identity exists. The absence of a psychometrically robust instrument that specifically measures interprofessional identity and the short-term focus of current interprofessional identity research further limits understanding. Research that critically examines professional and interprofessional identity development should be underpinned by clear definitions, concepts, theories and measures of both identities. High-quality research will allow greater understanding of interprofessional identity development and its impact on interprofessional practice.

Learning With Patients, Students, and Peers: Continuing Professional Development in the Solo Practitioner Workplace

Conceptualizations of workplace learning have moved from knowledge acquisition to learning as participation in the practices and cultures of the workplace environment. Along with this has come an appreciation of applicability of sociocultural learning theories, which frame learning as occurring within "communities of practice" or learning being "situated" within a workplace environment where collaboration and social interaction are fundamental to the learning process. These conceptualizations of workplace learning are ideally suited to health professions where learners are supervised in clinical work environments and then continue to work in team-based environments as graduates. However, what happens to workplace learning for novice practitioners who have limited periods of clinical supervision and then graduate into solo or small group practices (which may also be in rural or remote locations) and embark on long working careers without supervision? This paper argues workplace learning needs to be scaffolded and supported to reach its full potential in these environments. Drawing on workplace-based learning theory, we highlight the ubiquitous nature of learning in the workplace, the importance of active engagement, reflection, and individual meaning making. Through this reframing of traditional notions of continuing professional development, we emphasize the importance of patients, students, and other practitioners as partners in workplace learning for solo practitioners. We also focus on the role of educators, professional associations, and regulators in helping solo practitioners recognize, access, and maximize the learning opportunities inherent in relatively isolated practice environments.

Interprofessional education as a contributor to professional and interprofessional identities

According to the World Health Organization interprofessional education (IPE) is a necessary step in preparing a collaborative practice-ready health work force. However, the processes of developing professional identity within interprofessional education programs have not been fully explored and require a deeper understanding. Participation in interprofessional education groups may influence the development of professional identity including increased awareness of one's own profession-specific competence as well as socialization into a professional role. Interprofessional education is a dynamic social process related to students' memberships in IPE-groups. We conducted focus groups with representatives from students in seven different professional education programs involved in interprofessional education during all three years of their educational programs. We used the principles of systematic text condensation as an analytical frame. This article is a contribution toward grasping how IPE can contribute to both professional and interprofessional identity. Group collaboration in interprofessional education enabled students to identify with their profession as well as creating a safe place to gain insight into other professions' competencies. Moreover, students could obtain knowledge about being a professional participant and could enrich their professional identity, as they were involved with students from other professions. IPE-groups strengthened professional identity rather than threatened it.

Factors that may promote the learning of person-centred care: an ethnographic study of an implementation programme for healthcare professionals in a medical emergency ward in Sweden

While person-centred care has gained increasing prominence in recent decades as a goal for healthcare systems, mainstream implementation remains tentative and there is a lack of knowledge about how to develop person-centred care in practice. This study therefore aimed to explore what may be required in order for person-centred care programmes to be successful. The study used an ethnographic method of data collection. This consisted of closely following an implementation programme on a medical emergency ward in a Swedish hospital. Data consisted of participant observation and informal interviews with healthcare providers and their management leaders while they were in the process of training to use person-centred care. These interlocutors were using action learning methods under the guidance of facilitators. Our findings revealed that although the programme resulted in some of the processes that are central for person-centred care being developed, organisational factors and a lack of attention to ethics in the programme counteracted these positive effects. The study highlights the importance of facilitating mechanisms to produce desired results. These include management leaders' learning about the dynamic and collective nature of learning processes and change. They also include allowing for inter-professional dialogue to enable managers and professionals to reflect deeply on professional boundaries, disciplinary knowledge and power relations in their teams. Teamwork is essential for the development of person-centred care and documentation, in accordance with this specific implementation programme, is also indispensable. The space for inter-professional dialogue should also accommodate their various perspectives on the aims of care and organizational reality.

Faculty development program evaluation: a need to embrace complexity

Faculty development is essential for renewing and assisting faculty to maintain teaching effectiveness and adapt to innovations in Health Professions educational institutions. The evaluation of faculty development programs appears to be a significant step in maintaining its relevance and efficiency. Yet, little has been published on the specific case of faculty development program evaluation in spite of the availability of general program evaluation models. These models do not measure or capture the information educators want to know about outcomes and impacts of faculty development. We posit that two reasons account for this. The first is the evolving nature of faculty development programs as they adapt to current reforms and innovations. The second involves the limitations imposed by program evaluation models that fail to take into account the multiple and unpredictable outcomes and impacts of faculty development. It is generally accepted that the outcomes and impacts are situated at various levels, ranging from the individual to the institutional and cultural levels. This calls for evaluation models that better capture the complexity of the impacts of faculty development, in particular the reciprocal relationships between program components and outcomes. We suggest conceptual avenues, based on Structuration Theory, that could lead to identifying the multilevel impacts of faculty development.

12 tips for developing inter-professional education (IPE) in healthcare

However, in order to collaborate in interprofessional teams, health professionals must also train in them. Despite increasing interest in IPE amongst healthcare educators, and positive comments from students, barriers to its implementation remain. The authors of this article come from different healthcare professions and have overcome the challenges of developing IPE to devise several successful activities. This article outlines the educational benefits of IPE and provides guidance for surmounting obstacles to its implementation, supported by examples from our own experience.

The impact of an interprofessional training ward on the development of interprofessional competencies: study protocol of a longitudinal mixed-methods study

BACKGROUND

To meet the patients' needs and to provide adequate health care, students need to be prepared for interprofessional collaborative practice during their undergraduate education. On interprofessional training wards (IPTW) undergraduates of various health care professions potentially develop a mutual understanding and improve their interprofessional competencies in clinical practice. To enhance collaboration of 6th-year medical students and nursing trainees in the third year of their vocational training an IPTW (Heidelberger Interprofessionelle Ausbildungsstation - HIPSTA) was implemented at the University Hospital Heidelberg, Germany. On HIPSTA future physicians and nurses take care of the patients self responsibly and in close interprofessional collaboration, supervised by facilitators of both professions. Although there are positive experiences with IPTWs internationally, little is known about the impact of IPTW on the acquisition of interprofessional competencies. For future interprofessional training and implementation of IPTWs evaluation of interprofessional learning and collaborative practice on Germany's first IPTW is of high relevance.

METHODS

To evaluate the acquisition of interprofessional competencies the study follows a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative data is collected from undergraduate participants, staff participants and facilitators on HIPSTA (intervention group) and undergraduate participants and staff participants on a comparable 'conventional' ward without special interprofessional training (comparison group) immediately pre and post HIPSTA and, as follow-up, after three to six months (T0, T1, T2), using three questionnaires, namely the University of the West of England Interprofessional Questionnaire (UWE-IP), the Interprofessional Socialization and Valuing Scale (ISVS) and the Assessment of Interprofessional Team Collaboration Scale (AITCS). Qualitative data is gathered in form of interviews and focus groups based on semi structured guidelines, video recordings of handovers and overt non-participant observations of daily rounds. Quantitative data will be analysed in a longitudinal comparison, presented descriptively and tested with an analysis of variance. Qualitative data will be analysed deductively and inductively.

DISCUSSION

The results of the evaluation will give insight in undergraduates', staff's and facilitators' experiences and their self-perception of competency development. In addition the results will help identify benefits, challenges and areas for modification when implementing and establishing similar interprofessional training wards.

Deploying unqualified personnel in health records practice: Role substitution or quackery? Implications for health services delivery in Nigeria

Healthcare professionals are obliged to work collaboratively regardless of their professional differences in order to provide the highest possible standard of care to patients. However, this type of collaboration can also lead to role substitution and, in effect, engagement of unqualified personnel in all health professions, including the health information management profession. This is a particular problem in developing nations such as Nigeria, where this trend has the potential to undermine the delivery of health services, the quality and the confidentiality of health information and trust between patients and healthcare professionals. To clarify and protect the professional identity of qualified health information management professionals in Nigeria and to prevent other experts who also work in health facilities (e.g. IT specialists, librarians) from claiming membership of the profession, the nomenclature for the health information management profession has been changed to health records and information management profession.

Examining the implementation of collaborative competencies in a critical care setting: Key challenges for enacting competency-based education

Interprofessional collaboration is recognised as an important factor in improving patient care in intensive care units (ICUs). Competency frameworks, and more specifically interprofessional competency frameworks, are a key strategy being used to support the development of attitudes, knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed for an interprofessional approach to care. However, evidence for the application of competencies is limited. This study aimed to extend our empirically based understanding of the significance of interprofessional competencies to actual clinical practice in an ICU. An ethnographic approach was employed to obtain an in-depth insight into healthcare providers' perspectives, behaviours, and interactions of interprofessional collaboration in a medical surgical ICU in a community teaching hospital in Canada. Approximately 160 hours of observations were undertaken and 24 semi-structured interviews with healthcare workers were conducted over a period of 6 months. Data were analysed using a directed content approach where two national competency frameworks were used to help generate an understanding of the practice of interprofessional collaboration. Healthcare professionals demonstrated numerous instances of interprofessional communication, role understandings, and teamwork in the ICU setting, which supported a number of key collaborative competencies. However, organisational factors such as pressures for discharge and patient flow, staffing, and lack of prioritisation for interprofessional learning undermined competencies designed to improve collaboration and teamwork. The findings demonstrate that interprofessional competencies can play an important role in promoting knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behaviours needed. However, competencies that promote interprofessional collaboration are dependent on a range of contextual factors that enable (or impede) individuals to actually enact these competencies.
