Biodegradation and removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in treatment systems: a review

Review on antibiotic pollution dynamics: insights to occurrence, environmental behaviour, ecotoxicity, and management strategies

Antibiotic contamination poses a significant global concern due to its far-reaching impact on public health and the environment. This comprehensive review delves into the prevalence of various antibiotic classes in environmental pollution and their interactions with natural ecosystems. Fluoroquinolones, macrolides, tetracyclines, and sulphonamides have emerged as prevalent contaminants in environmental matrices worldwide. The concentrations of these antibiotics vary across diverse environments, influenced by production practices, consumer behaviours, and socio-economic factors. Low- and low-middle-income countries face unique challenges in managing antibiotic contamination, with dominant mechanisms like hydrolysis, sorption, and biodegradation leading to the formation of toxic byproducts. Ecotoxicity reports reveal the detrimental effects of these byproducts on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, further emphasizing the gravity of the issue. Notably, monitoring the antibiotic parent compound alone may be inadequate for framing effective control and management strategies for antibiotic pollution. This review underscores the imperative of a comprehensive, multi-sectoral approach to address environmental antibiotic contamination and combat antimicrobial resistance. It also advocates for the development and implementation of tailored national action plans that consider specific environmental conditions and factors. Thus, an approach is crucial for safeguarding both public health and the delicate balance of our natural ecosystems.

Drug-degrading bacteria isolated from the effluent water of a sewage plant

Endocrine disruptors are potential environmental contaminants that can cause toxicity in aquatic ecosystems, so the Water Framework Directive has established limits for these compounds. During our research, 41 bacterial strains were isolated and identified from sewage effluent and tested for their degradation capacities for bisphenol A, 17β-estradiol, and nonylphenol. All the isolated bacteria belonged to the Gammaproteobacteria class of Pseudomonadota phylum (members of Citrobacter, Enterobacter, Escherichia, Klebsiella, Kluyvera, Leclercia, Raoultella, Shigella. Acinetobacter, Aeromonas, and Pseudomonas genera). During the experiments, only strains HF17, HF18 (Pseudomonas aeruginosa), and HF31 (Citrobacter freundii) were unable to grow on these compounds, all other bacterial strains could grow in the presence of the investigated endocrine disruptors. Based on the genomic analysis of the type strains, a set of genes involving aromatic compound degradation was detected, among the peripheral metabolic pathways, the quinate and benzoate degradation pathways proved to be widespread, among the central aromatic intermediates metabolism, the catechol branch of the beta-ketoadipate pathway was the most dominant. Pseudomonas fulva HF16 strain could utilize the investigated endocrine disruptors: bisphenol A by 34%, 17β-estradiol by 52%, and nonylphenol by 54%.

A thorough analysis of the occurrence, removal and environmental risks of organic micropollutants in a full-scale hybrid membrane bioreactor fed by hospital wastewater

The Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive recent draft issued last October 2022 pays attention to contaminants of emerging concern including organic micropollutants (OMPs) and requires the removal of some of them at large urban wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) calling for their upgrading. Many investigations to date have reported the occurrence of a vast group of OMPs in the influent and many technologies have been tested for their removal at a lab- or pilot-scale. Moreover, it is well-known that hospital wastewater (HWW) contains specific OMPs at high concentration and therefore its management and treatment deserves attention. In this study, a 1-year investigation was carried out at a full-scale membrane bioreactor (MBR) treating mainly HWW. To promote the removal of OMPs, powdered activated carbon (PAC) was added to the bioreactor at 0.1 g/L and 0.2 g/L which resulted in the MBR operating as a hybrid MBR. Its performance was tested for 232 target and 90 non-target OMPs, analyzed by UHPLC-QTOF-MS using a direct injection method. A new methodology was defined to select the key compounds in order to evaluate the performance of the treatments. It was based on their frequency, occurrence, persistence to removal, bioaccumulation and toxicity. Finally, an environmental risk assessment of the OMP residues was conducted by means of the risk quotient approach. The results indicate that PAC addition increased the removal of most of the key OMPs (e.g., sulfamethoxazole, diclofenac, lidocaine) and OMP classes (e.g., antibiotics, psychiatric drugs and stimulants) with the highest loads in the WWTP influent. The hybrid MBR also reduced the risk in the receiving water as the PAC dosage increased mainly for spiramycin, lorazepam, oleandomycin. Finally, uncertainties and issues related to the investigation being carried out at full-scale under real conditions are discussed.

Environmental persistence assessment of heterocyclic polyaromatic hydrocarbons - Ultimate and primary biodegradability using adapted and non-adapted microbial communities

Heterocyclic polyaromatic hydrocarbons (heterocyclic PAHs) are of increasing concern and their environmental and human health impacts should be assessed due to their widespread presence and potential persistence in the environment. This study investigated the ultimate and primary biodegradability of ten heterocyclic PAHs, nine of which were found to be non-readily biodegradable. To generate a microbial community capable of degrading such compounds, a bacterial inoculum isolated from the effluent of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was adapted to a mixture of heterocyclic PAHs for one year. Throughout the adaptation process, bacterial samples were collected at different stages to conduct primary biodegradation, ultimate biodegradation, and inoculum toxicity tests. Interestingly, after one year of adaptation, the community developed the ability to mineralize carbazole, but in the same time showed an increasing sensitivity to the toxic effects of benzo[c]carbazole. In two consecutive primary biodegradation experiments, degradation of four heterocycles was observed, while no biodegradation was detected for five compounds in any of the tests. Furthermore, the findings of this work were compared with predictions from in silico models regarding biodegradation timeframe and sorption, and it was found that the models were partially successful in describing these processes. The results of study provide valuable insights into the persistence of a representative group of heterocyclic PAHs in aquatic environments, which contributes to the hazard assessment of this particular class of substances.

Dissipation of twelve organic micropollutants in three different soils: Effect of soil characteristics and microbial composition

The dissipation kinetics and half-lives of selected organic micropollutants, including pharmaceuticals and others, were systematically investigated and compared among different soil types. While some pollutants (e.g., atorvastatin, valsartan, and bisphenol S) disappeared rapidly in all the tested soils, many of them (e.g., telmisartan, memantine, venlafaxine, and azithromycin) remained persistent. Irrespective of the soil characteristics, venlafaxine showed the lowest dissipation kinetics and the longest half-lives (250 to approximately 500 days) among the stable compounds. The highest first and second-order kinetics were, however, recorded for valsartan (k1; 0.262 day-1) and atorvastatin (k2; 33.8 g μg-1 day-1) respectively. Nevertheless, more than 90% (i.e., DT90) of all the rapidly dissipated compounds (i.e., atorvastatin, bisphenol S, and valsartan) disappeared from the tested soils within a short timescale (i.e., 5-36 days). Dissipation of pollutants that are more susceptible to microbial degradation (e.g., atorvastatin, bisphenol S, and valsartan) seems to be slower for soils possessing the lowest microbial biomass C (Cmic) and total phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAtotal), which also found statistically significant. Our results revealing the persistence of several organic pollutants in agricultural soils, which might impact the quality of these soils, the groundwater, and eventually on the related biota, is of high environmental significance.

Adsorption Behavior of Diclofenac on Polystyrene and Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) Microplastics: Influencing Factors and Adsorption Mechanism

To unveil the intricacies surrounding the interaction between microplastics (MPs) and pollutants, diligent investigation is warranted to mitigate the environmental perils they pose. This exposition delves into the sorption behavior and mechanism of diclofenac sodium (DCF), a contaminant, upon two distinct materials: polystyrene (PS) and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT). Experimental adsorption endeavors solidify the observation that the adsorption capacity of DCF onto the designated MPs amounts to Q(PBAT) = 9.26 mg g-1 and Q(PS) = 9.03 mg g-1, respectively. An exploration of the factors governing these discrepant adsorption phenomena elucidates the influence of MPs and DCF properties, environmental factors, as well as surfactants. Fitting procedures underscore the suitability of the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich models in capturing the intricacies of the DCF adsorption process onto MPs, corroborating the notion that the mentioned process is characterized by non-homogeneous chemisorption. Moreover, this inquiry unveils that the primary adsorption mechanisms of DCF upon MPs encompass electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and halo hydrogen bonding. An additional investigation concerns the impact of commonly encountered surfactants in aqueous environments on the adsorption of DCF onto MPs. The presence of surfactants elicits modifications in the surface charge properties of MPs, consequently influencing their adsorption efficacy vis-à-vis DCF.

Effect of molecular structure on the adsorption behavior of sulfanilamide antibiotics on crumpled graphene balls

Since the 1930s, sulfonamide(SA)-based antibiotics have served as important pharmaceuticals, but their widespread detection in water systems threatens aquatic organisms and human health. Adsorption via graphene, its modified form (graphene oxide, GO), and related nanocomposites is a promising method to remove SAs, owing to the strong and selective surface affinity of graphene/GO with aromatic compounds. However, a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of interaction between the chemical structure of SAs and the GO surface is required to predict the performance of GO-based nanostructured materials to adsorb the individual chemicals making up this large class of pharmaceuticals. In this research, we studied the adsorptive performance of 3D crumpled graphene balls (CGBs) to remove 10 SAs and 13 structural analogs from water. The maximum adsorption capacity qm of SAs on CGB increased with the number of (1) aromatic rings; (2) electron-donating functional groups; (3) hydrogen bonding acceptor sites. Furthermore, the CGB surface displayed a preference for homocyclic relative to heterocyclic aromatic structures. A leading mechanism, π-π electron-donor-acceptor interaction, combined with hydrogen bonding, explains these trends. We developed a multiple linear regression model capable of predicting the qm as a function of SA chemical structure and properties and the oxidation level of CGB. The model predicted the adsorptive behaviors of SAs well with the exception of a chlorinated/fluorinated SA. The insights afforded by these experiments and modeling will aid in tailoring graphene-based adsorbents to remove micropollutants from water and reduce the growing public health threats associated with antibiotic resistance and endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

PERK: An R/Shiny application to predict and visualise concentrations of pharmaceuticals in the aqueous environment

Predicting the concentration of active pharmaceuticals ingredients (API) in the environment using modelling approaches is an important aspect in the assessment of their environmental risk, especially for the API with no or limited analytical detection methods. However, handling, validating, and incorporating diverse datasets, including API prescription/consumption data, metabolism, flow data, removal efficiency during wastewater treatment, and dilution factor for the modelling is often laborious and time-consuming. The aim of this manuscript is to evaluate R/Shiny based tool, PERK, to facilitate automated modelling and reporting predicted environmental concentration (PEC) of a comprehensive set of API in different environmental matrices. PERK helped to calculate PEC in wastewater influent, effluent, and river, and compare with measured environmental concentrations (MEC) for five catchments located in England. Prediction accuracy (PA), the ratio between PEC and MEC, can be also generated with the tool. PERK provides consistent interactive user-interface, enabling user to visualise the results with limited programming knowledge.

The Impact of Anti-Inflammatory Drugs on the Prokaryotic Community Composition and Selected Bacterial Strains Based on Microcosm Experiments

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are increasingly recognized as potential environmental contaminants that may induce toxicity in aquatic ecosystems. This 3-week microcosm experiment explores the acute impacts of NSAIDs, including diclofenac (DCF), ibuprofen (IBU), and acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), on bacterial communities using a wide range of these substances (200-6000 ppm). The results showed that the NSAID-treated microcosms had higher cell count values than control samples, though the diversity of microbial communities decreased. The isolated heterotrophic bacteria mostly belonged to Proteobacteria, particularly Klebsiella. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) revealed that NSAIDs altered the structure of the bacterial community composition, with the proportion of Proteobacteria aligning with the selective cultivation results. Bacteria had higher resistance to IBU/ASA than to DCF. In DCF-treated microcosms, there has been a high reduction of the number of Bacteroidetes, whereas in the microcosms treated with IBU/ASA, they have remained abundant. The numbers of Patescibacteria and Actinobacteria have decreased across all NSAID-treated microcosms. Verrucomicrobia and Planctomycetes have tolerated all NSAIDs, even DCF. Cyanobacteria have also demonstrated tolerance to IBU/ASA treatment in the microcosms. The archaeal community structure was also impacted by the NSAID treatments, with Thaumarchaeota abundant in all microcosms, especially DCF-treated microcosms, while Nanoarchaeota is more typical of IBU/ASA-treated microcosms with lower NSAID concentrations. These results indicate that the presence of NSAIDs in aquatic environments could lead to changes in the composition of microbial communities.

Unravelling ciprofloxacin removal in a nitrifying moving bed biofilm reactor: Biodegradation mechanisms and pathways

Although moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) have shown excellent antibiotic removal potentials, the information on underlying mechanisms is yet limited. This work assessed the removal of ciprofloxacin in an enriched nitrifying MBBR by clarifying the contribution of adsorption and microbial-induced biodegradation. Results demonstrated the considerable biomass adsorption (55%) in first 30 min. Limiting nitrite oxidizing bacteria growth or inhibiting nitrification would lead to lower adsorption capacities. The highest ciprofloxacin biodegradation rate constant was 0.082 L g SS^-1 h^-1 in the presence of ammonium, owing to ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB)-induced cometabolism, while heterotrophs played an insignificant role (∼9%) in ciprofloxacin biodegradation. The developed model also suggested the importance of AOB-induced cometabolism and metabolism over heterotrophs-induced biodegradation by analyzing the respective biodegradation coefficients. Cometabolic biodegradation pathways of ciprofloxacin mainly involved the piperazine ring cleavage, probably alleviating antimicrobial activities. It implies the feasibility of nitrifying biofilm systems towards efficient antibiotic removal from wastewater.

Adsorption of Diclofenac Sodium by Aged Degradable and Non-Degradable Microplastics: Environmental Effects, Adsorption Mechanisms

Microplastics (MPs) are novel pollutants, which can carry toxic contaminants and are released in biota and accumulate. The adsorption behavior of MPs and aged MPs has attracted extensive attention. In this paper, the aging process of polystyrene (PS) and poly (butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) plastics under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation at a high temperature and their adsorption properties for the contaminant diclofenac sodium (DCF) before and after aging was investigated. There are many factors affecting the adsorption capacity of MPs. In this experiment, three aspects of MPs, organic pollutants, and environmental factors are explored. The Freundlich model as well as the pseudosecondary kinetic model is more applicable to the process of DCF adsorption by MPs. The main effects of adsorption of organic pollutants by MPs are electrostatic interactions, hydrogen-halogen bonds, and hydrophobic interactions. The adsorption capacity of the UV-aged MPs on DCF is significantly enhanced, and the order of adsorption capacity is Q(A-PBAT) (27.65 mg/g) > Q (A-PS) (23.91 mg/g) > Q (PBAT) (9.30 mg/g) > Q (PS) (9.21 mg/g). The results show that more active sites are generated on the surface of MPs after aging, which can enhance their adsorption capacity for organic pollutants. This adsorption mechanism will increase their role as contaminant carriers in the aquatic food chain.

Predictive modeling of pharmaceutical product removal by a managed aquifer recharge system: Comparison and optimization of models using ensemble learners

Pharmaceutical products (PPs) are emerging water pollutants with adverse environmental and health-related impacts, owing to their toxic, persistent, and undetectable microscopic nature. Globally, increasing scientific knowledge and advanced technologies have allowed researchers to study PP-associated problems and their removal for water reuse. Experimental modeling methods require laborious, lengthy, expensive, and environmentally hazardous lab-work to optimize the process. On the other hand, predictive machine learning (ML) models can trace the complex input-output relationship of a process using available datasets. In this study, ensemble ML techniques, including decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), and Xtreme gradient boost (XGB), were used to explore PP (diclofenac, iopromide, propranolol, and trimethoprim) removal by a managed aquifer recharge (MAR) system. The model input parameters included characteristics of reclaimed water and soil used in the columns, pH, dissolved organic carbon, operating time, nitrogen dioxide, sulfate, nitrate, electrical conductivity, manganese, and iron. The selected PP removal was the model output. Datasets were collected through a one-year experimental study of continuous MAR system operation to predict the removal of PPs. DT, RF, and XGB models were then developed for one of the selected compounds and tested for the others to check the reliability of the ML model results. The developed models were assessed using statistical performance matrices. The experimental results showed >80% removal of propranolol and trimethoprim; however, removal of diclofenac and iopromide was only ≈50% by the MAR system. The proposed DT and RF models presented higher coefficients of determination (R² ≥ 0.92) for diclofenac, propranolol, and trimethoprim than for iopromide (R² ≤ 0.63). In contrast, the XGB model showed better results for diclofenac, iopromide, propranolol, and trimethoprim, with R² values of 0.92, 0.72, 0.96, and 0.97, respectively. Therefore, XGB could be the best predictive model to provide insight into the adaptation of ML models to predict PP removal by the MAR system, thereby minimizing experimental work.

Treating reverse osmosis concentrate to address scaling and fouling problems in zero-liquid discharge systems: A scientometric review of global trends

Currently, reverse osmosis concentrate (ROC) treatment is one of the most promising techniques for its disposal because it produces freshwater with high recovery and valuable materials such as salts and reduces waste volume and environmental pollution. Public attention to the severe consequences of water pollution and strict environmental regulations on wastewater discharge has pushed water-polluting industries toward zero-liquid discharge (ZLD). However, scaling and fouling problems increase energy consumption and limit permeate flux at high salt concentrations, mainly due to calcium, magnesium, and silica precipitation, ultimately decreasing ZLD performance. Therefore, this study discusses drivers and ROC pretreatment technologies to improve ZLD efficiency and presents a scientometric review of global trends. The advantages, disadvantages, and economic and environmental aspects of conventional and emerging pre-treatment technologies were studied. Traditional treatment of chemical processes combined with precipitation removes a large amount of scaling ions; however, high operation and maintenance costs and limited full-scale plant experience are the main drawbacks. Softening and coagulation are most commonly applied to treat large volumes at a moderate cost; however, substantial sludge production and increased conductivity are major operational issues. Moreover, emerging technologies efficiently remove scale-forming ions with high capital and operating costs. New variations in standard reverse osmosis technologies have improved ZLD efficiency; nonetheless, scaling and fouling are of concern. Therefore, this review presents the studies on ROC pre-treatment technologies for removing scaling ions to enhance ZLD efficiency, which can help in future research.

Cosmetic wastewater treatment technologies: a review

Over the past three decades, environmental concerns about the water pollution have been raised on societal and industrial levels. The presence of pollutants stemming from cosmetic products has been documented in wastewater streams outflowing from industrial as well as wastewater treatment plants. To this end, a series of consistent measures should be taken to prevent emerging contaminants of water resources. This need has driven the development of technologies, in an attempt to mitigate their impact on the environment. This work offers a thorough review of existing knowledge on cosmetic wastewater treatment approaches, including, coagulation, dissolved air flotation, adsorption, activated sludge, biodegradation, constructed wetlands, and advanced oxidation processes. Various studies have already documented the appearance of cosmetics in samples retrieved from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which have definitely promoted our comprehension of the path of cosmetics within the treatment cycle; however, there are still multiple blanks to our knowledge. All treatments have, without exception, their own limitations, not only cost-wise, but also in terms of being feasible, effective, practical, reliable, and environmentally friendly.

Characteristics and growth kinetics of biomass of Citrobacter freundii strains PYI-2 and Citrobacter portucalensis strain YPI-2 during the biodegradation of Ibuprofen

Ibuprofen (IBU) is the third most commonly used analgesic drug in the world. It enters the water system as a result of human excretion-based wastewater discharges. Hence, it attracts the attention of environmentalists for its ecological fate and degradation behavior. In this study, the two IBU degrading bacterial strains, Citrobacter freundii strain PYI-2 (MT039504) and Citrobacter portucalensis strain YPI-2 (MN744335), were isolated from industrial wastewater samples using an enrichment culture method, identified, and characterized. Physiological and batch culture degradation studies have indicated that these strains involved in IBU degradation and the intermediates produced during the process were analyzed. These strains degrade IBU in the batch culture. The optimum pH was reported for degradation of the PYI2 strain (6.9) and YPI2 strain (5.8), and the optimum temperatures were 42°C and 32°C, respectively. Biomass kinetic analysis of these strains was performed based on physical parameters (temperature, pH, and rpm) and confirmed by the experimental study. As indicated in the GC-MS chromatogram peaks, viz., hydroxyibuprofen, 2-(4-hydroxyphenylpropionic acid), 1,4-hydroquinone, and 2-hydroxy-1,4-quinol various intermediates compounds of degradation pathway were observed. Finally, through the GC-MS data, the metabolic pathway for degradation was predicted. In the study, it was confirmed that Citrobacter freundii strain PYI-2 and Citrobacter portucalensis strain YPI-2 exhibit metabolic potential for the biodegradation of IBU and can be further deployed in bioremediation.

Sorption of diclofenac by polystyrene microplastics: Kinetics, isotherms and particle size effects

Diclofenac (DCF) is a common pharmaceutical that widely distributed in natural waters, and has been received an increasing attention because of its potential toxicity. Additionally, microplastics are also ubiquitous pollutants in natural waters, but little information is available on their interactions. In this study, the sorption of DCF on polystyrene microplastics (PS MPs) with different particle sizes was investigated, and the influence of environmental factors was also explored. Results indicated that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was suitable to describe the sorption process. The sorption capacity increased with the increase in particle size. The isotherms data for the sorption of DCF on 0.5 and 1 μm PS MPs were best fitted with the Dubinine-Radushkevich model, but the Freundlich and Langmuir models could best describe the sorption of DCF 5 and 20 μm PS MPs, respectively. It is suggested that the sorption was a chemisorption, which is also verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results. Furthermore, the sorption capacity decreased as pH increased, and increased as ionic strength increased. These findings give a new perspective that the microplastics with larger sizes hold promise for the treatment of DCF-contaminated water.

Uptake of perfluoroalkyl substances, pharmaceuticals, and parabens by oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) and exposure risk in human consumption

Organic micropollutants (MPs) pose potential threats to environmental ecosystems and human health. This study investigated uptake of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), pharmaceuticals, and paraben by edible oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus), cultivated on spiked growth substrate. Concentrations of pharmaceuticals and paraben in substrate showed a decreasing trend over a 20-day harvesting period, whereas PFAS concentrations were variable over the harvesting period. However, only propylparaben, clarithromycin, and PFASs were detected in fruiting bodies of oyster mushroom. Uptake of PFASs by oyster mushroom fruit bodies was negatively correlated with perfluorocarbon chain length. An impact of MPs on fungal colonization was observed, with decreased respiration in treatments with the highest concentration of MPs, but production of fruiting bodies was not affected by exposure level. The potential human risk from ingestion of MPs was evaluated for oyster mushrooms exposed to the highest concentration of MPs in substrate, based on acceptable daily intake (ADI).

Nitrosation and nitration of diclofenac and structurally related nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in nitrifying activated sludge

Diclofenac (DCF) is a highly consumed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is excreted partially metabolized and is poorly removed during wastewater treatment. Previous findings demonstrated that DCF in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) is partially removed to nitro/nitroso compounds. The reactive nitrogen species, that are microbially produced during nitrification in the activated sludge of WWTP, were suspected to be involved in the transformation of DCF. Therefore, here, we investigated the molecular features governing such biotransformation and the role played by nitrifying bacteria by biodegradation experiments at lab scale in enriched nitrifying sludge bioreactors spiked with DCF and other structurally related non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). We provided evidence of the incorporation of NO/NO₂ groups into DCF originated from ammonia by isotopically labelled biodegradation experiments. Nitroso and nitro-derivatives were tentatively identified for all NSAIDs studied and biotransformation mechanisms were proposed. Our findings from biodegradation experiments performed under different incubation conditions suggested that biotransformation of DCF and its related NSAIDs might not only be microbially mediated by ammonia oxidizing bacteria, but other nitrifiers co-occurring in the activated sludge as ammonia oxidizing archaea and nitrite oxidizing bacteria. Follow-up studies should be conducted to disentangle such complex behaviour in order to improve removal of these contaminants in WWTPs.

The fate and removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products within wastewater treatment facilities discharging to the Great Bay Estuary

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are contaminants of emerging concern that derive primarily in the water environment from combined sewer overflows and discharges from industrial and municipal wastewater treatment facilities (WWTFs). Due to incomplete removal during wastewater treatment, PPCP impacts to aquatic ecosystems are a major concern. The Great Bay Estuary (New Hampshire, USA) is an important ecological, commercial, and recreational resource where upstream WWTFs have recently been under pressure to reduce nitrogen loading to the estuary and consequently upgrade treatment systems. Therefore, we investigated the distribution and abundance of 18 PPCPs and three flame retardants within the Great Bay Estuary and WWTFs discharging to the estuary to examine how WWTF type influenced PPCP removal. All 21 analytes were frequently detected at μg/L to ng/L concentrations in influent and effluent and ng/kg in sludge. WWTFs with enhanced nutrient removal and longer solids retention times correlated to higher PPCP removal, indicating facility upgrades may have benefits related to PPCP removal. Understanding PPCP fate during treatment and in downstream waters informs our ability to assess the environmental and ecological impacts of PPCPs on estuarine resources and develop mitigation strategies to better protect marine ecosystems from emerging contaminant exposure. PRACTITIONER POINTS: PPCP removal positively correlated with solids retention time and varied by treatment facility and compound. Upgrade of WWTFs for biological nitrogen removal may also increase PPCP removal. Surface water fluoxetine concentrations may present an ecological risk to the Great Bay Estuary.

The potential for adverse effects in fish exposed to antidepressants in the aquatic environment

Antidepressants are one of the most commonly prescribed pharmaceutical classes for the treatment of psychiatric conditions. They act via modulation of brain monoaminergic signaling systems (predominantly serotonergic, adrenergic, dopaminergic) that show a high degree of structural conservation across diverse animal phyla. A reasonable assumption, therefore, is that exposed fish and other aquatic wildlife may be affected by antidepressants released into the natural environment. Indeed, there are substantial data reported for exposure effects in fish, albeit most are reported for exposure concentrations exceeding those occurring in natural environments. From a critical analysis of the available evidence for effects in fish, risk quotients (RQs) were derived from laboratory-based studies for a selection of antidepressants most commonly detected in the aquatic environment. We conclude that the likelihood for effects in fish on standard measured end points used in risk assessment (i.e., excluding effects on behavior) is low for levels of exposure occurring in the natural environment. Nevertheless, some effects on behavior have been reported for environmentally relevant exposures, and antidepressants can bioaccumulate in fish tissues. Limitations in the datasets used to calculate RQs revealed important gaps in which future research should be directed to more accurately assess the risks posed by antidepressants to fish. Developing greater certainty surrounding risk of antidepressants to fish requires more attention directed toward effects on behaviors relating to individual fitness, the employment of environmentally realistic exposure levels, on chronic exposure scenarios, and on mixtures analyses, especially given the wide range of similarly acting compounds released into the environment.

Prevalence of Pharmaceuticals in Surface Water Samples in Ghana

Pharmaceuticals, among the emerging contaminants, are pseudopersistent and recently of serious concern due to universal use, toxicity, and resistance development at low concentrations. This study was aimed at assessing the prevalence and risk of eight pharmaceuticals in surface water used for vegetable irrigation in Ghana’s Kumasi and Sunyani metropolises, which are influenced by hospitals, sewage treatment facilities, and market effluents. Samples were concentrated via solid-phase extraction (SPE) while liquid chromatography was used to identify and quantify the analytes. Ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and diclofenac were the detected analgesics in this study, with concentrations stretching from below detection limit (not detected) to 319.0 ng/L, while amoxicillin, trimethoprim, and cefuroxime were the detected antibiotics with a concentration range of no detection to 840.0 ng/L. Based on the available long-term data, an environmental risk assessment was conducted. Because of the presence of ibuprofen, the lowest trophic level and fish were shown to be at risk. The estimated risk quotient values for antibiotics resistance were above 1 for all the antibiotics investigated in surface water impacted by the wastewater of hospitals and pharmaceutical companies’ except surface water impacted by sewage treatment plants (STPs) and market wastewater. The existence of these pharmaceuticals in surface water does not only point to a general concern for the environment but also a potential health risk on humans and other lives as a result of their impact on drinking water and vegetable production in Ghana.

The adsorption, kinetics, and interaction mechanisms of various types of estrogen on electrospun polymeric nanofiber membranes

This study focuses on the adsorption kinetics of four highly potent sex hormones (estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2), 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), and estriol (E3)), present in water reservoirs, which are considered a major cause of fish feminization, low sperm count in males, breast and ovarian cancer in females induced by hormonal imbalance. Herein, electrospun polymeric nanostructures were produced from cellulose acetate, polyamide, polyethersulfone, polyurethanes (918 and elastollan), and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) to simultaneously adsorbing these estrogenic hormones in a single step process and to compare their performance. These nanofibers possessed an average fiber diameter in the range 174-330 nm and their specific surface area ranged between 10.2 and 20.9 m²g^-1. The adsorption-desorption process was investigated in four cycles to determine the effective reusability of the adsorption systems. A one-step high-performance liquid chromatography technique was developed to detect and quantify concurrently each hormone present in the solution. Experimental data were obtained to determine the adsorption kinetics by applying pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion models. Findings showed that E1, E2 and EE2 best fitted pseudo-second-order kinetics, while E3 followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. It was found that polyurethane Elastollan nanofibers had maximum adsorption capacities of 0.801, 0.590, 0.736 and 0.382 mg g^-1for E1, E2, EE2 and E3, respectively. In addition, the results revealed that polyurethane Elastollan nanofibers had the highest percentage efficiency of estrogens removal at ∼58.9% due to its strong hydrogen bonding with estrogenic hormones, while the least removal efficiency for PAN at ∼35.1%. Consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles demonstrated that polyurethane maintained the best efficiency, even after being repeatedly used four times compared to the other polymers. Overall, the findings indicate that all the studied nanostructures have the potential to be effective adsorbents for concurrently eradicating such estrogens from the environment.

A Review of the Occurrence of Pharmaceutical Compounds as Emerging Contaminants in Treated Wastewater and Aquatic Environments

In recent years, pharmaceutical compounds have emerged as potential contaminants in the aquatic matrices of the environment. High production, consumption, and limited removal through conventional treatment processes/wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the major causes for the occurrence of pharmaceutical compounds in wastewater and aquatic environments worldwide. A number of studies report adverse health effects and risks to aquatic life and the ecosystem because of the presence of pharmaceutical compounds in the aquatic environment. This paper provides a state-of-the-art review of the occurrence of pharmaceutical compounds in treated wastewater from various WWTPs, surface water and groundwater bodies. Additionally, this review provides comprehensive information and pointers for research in wastewater treatment and waterbodies management.

Pharmaceutical Compounds in Aquatic Environments-Occurrence, Fate and Bioremediation Prospective

Various contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) have been detected in different ecosystems, posing a threat to living organisms and the environment. Pharmaceuticals are among the many CECs that enter the environment through different pathways, with wastewater treatment plants being the main input of these pollutants. Several technologies for the removal of these pollutants have been developed through the years, but there is still a lack of sustainable technologies suitable for being applied in natural environments. In this regard, solutions based on natural biological processes are attractive for the recovery of contaminated environments. Bioremediation is one of these natural-based solutions and takes advantage of the capacity of microorganisms to degrade different organic pollutants. Degradation of pollutants by native microorganisms is already known to be an important detoxification mechanism that is involved in natural attenuation processes that occur in the environment. Thus, bioremediation technologies based on the selection of natural degrading bacteria seem to be a promising clean-up technology suitable for application in natural environments. In this review, an overview of the occurrence and fate of pharmaceuticals is carried out, in which bioremediation tools are explored for the removal of these pollutants from impacted environments.

Biodegradation of salicylic acid, acetaminophen and ibuprofen by bacteria collected from a full-scale drinking water biofilter

This study examined the biodegradation of two pharmaceuticals-acetaminophen, and ibuprofen, and one natural organic surrogate-salicylic acid, by bacteria seeded from backwash water collected from a full-scale biofiltration plant. The degradation was studied in the presence of oxygen. Complete removal of salicylic acid was observed in 27-66 h depending on the seasonality of the collected backwash water, while 90-92% acetaminophen removal was observed in more than 225 h. Ibuprofen demonstrated poor removal efficiencies with only 50% biodegradation after 230 h. Adenosine tri phosphate (ATP) in the reactor was found to be linked with the biodegradation rate. ATP was found to be correlated with oxygen uptake rate (OUR). ATP also had a correlation with each of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), protein and polysaccharides. These results highlight the potential for increasing the biodegradation rates to achieve enhanced contaminant removal.

Occurrence and distribution of antibiotics in sediments from black-odor ditches in urban areas from China

Antibiotic levels in black-odor water could reflect the usage amount of antibiotics in population. On the other hand, these antibiotics are the source of antibiotics in the environmental water. Currently, researches on antibiotics in black-odor sediments are still lacking. In this study, 174 black and odor sediment samples from 74 cities in 28 provinces in China were collected for analysis. Among 44 targeted antibiotics, 13 antibiotics were detected in more than 30% of sediment samples. Fluoroquinolones and tetracyclines were the predominant antibiotics in these field samples, with average concentrations of up to 2074 and 1902 ng/g dry weight (dw), respectively, followed by macrolides (87.9 ng/g dw), lincosamides (8.06 ng/g dw) and sulfonamides (8.38 ng/g dw). High antibiotic contamination levels were almost always detected in black-odor sludges from economically less developed small cities; however, the difference in antibiotic concentrations between well-developed and small cities in China was not statistically significant. In addition, among the seven regions within China, no significant difference in concentrations was observed for the most antibiotics. Variances in antibiotic composition patterns in the 28 provinces of China may be due to differences in bacterial resistance, prescription habits, efficacy, and sediment carbon concentrations among various regions. There were significant positive correlations among some antibiotics in the same or different classes.

Environmental Risk Assessment of Active Human Pharmaceutical Ingredients in Urban Rivers in Japan

Active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) have become a public concern owing to their possible adverse effects on aquatic organisms. Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in Japan (MHLW) issued "Guidance on the Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) in new pharmaceutical development" in 2016. To evaluate the validity of phase 1 in the MHLW's ERA guidance, we monitored the measured environmental concentrations (MECs) of approved APIs in urban rivers and sewage treatment plants (STPs) in Japan and compared these MECs with the predicted environmental concentration (PEC). We collected water samples from urban seven rivers and three STPs during each season. Fifty-one APIs for human and veterinary use and the artificial sweetener sucralose were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Forty-four APIs were observed in the rivers and 42 were found in the influent and effluent of STPs, with levels ranging from nanograms to micrograms per liter. The action limit in phase I of the MHLW's guidance was set to 10 ng/L, and there was no API except for ketoprofen, for which PEC of the MHLW's guidance (PECjapan) was lower than 10 ng/L and the maximum MEC (MECmax) was 10 ng/L or greater. Almost all APIs also had median MECs that were lower than those of the respective PECjapan. These results indicate that the PECjapan values in phase I of the MHLW's guidance were appropriate. However, some APIs had MECmax values that were greater than those of the respective PECjapan due to overestimation of the dilution factor of river water and/or underestimation of API production.

Two transformation pathways of Acetaminophen with Fe3+ saturated clay particles in dark or light

Acetaminophen (AP) has been frequently detected in different environments due to its wide usage as a common analgesic and antipyretic pharmaceutical. Excess residual of AP in the environment may cause biological risk. However, information about its environmental behaviors was limited, especially the interactions with clay minerals. In this study, AP transformation mediated by Fe³⁺ saturated clay particles was systematically investigated. The results showed 47.6 ± 1.1% or 78.9 ± 0.5% of AP was removed in the presence of Fe³⁺-montmorillonite respectively in dark or under simulated sunlight irradiation after 10 h. The hypothesized mechanism was that exchangeable ferric ions can either obtain electron from AP to form AP radical, or produce ^•OH under light, which can further react with AP. In dark condition, AP radicals could cross-couple with each other to form dimers, while oxidation products were also detected under light irradiation due to ^•OH attacking. Moreover, higher concentration of dissolved oxygen (DO) facilitated Fe³⁺ regeneration on clay surfaces and more reactive Fe species distributed in lower pH, which could significantly enhance the removal of AP both in dark and light. Results of this study revealed that clay minerals played important roles in the abiotic transformation of AP either in dark or under light irradiation, and oligomerization other than mineralization were the dominant processes.

Do initial concentration and activated sludge seasonality affect pharmaceutical biotransformation rate constants?

Pharmaceuticals find their way to the aquatic environment via wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Biotransformation plays an important role in mitigating environmental risks; however, a mechanistic understanding of involved processes is limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate potential relationships between first-order biotransformation rate constants (k_b) of nine pharmaceuticals and initial concentration of the selected compounds, and sampling season of the used activated sludge inocula. Four-day bottle experiments were performed with activated sludge from WWTP Groesbeek (The Netherlands) of two different seasons, summer and winter, spiked with two environmentally relevant concentrations (3 and 30 nM) of pharmaceuticals. Concentrations of the compounds were measured by LC-MS/MS, microbial community composition was assessed by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, and k_b values were calculated. The biodegradable pharmaceuticals were acetaminophen, metformin, metoprolol, terbutaline, and phenazone (ranked from high to low biotransformation rates). Carbamazepine, diatrizoic acid, diclofenac, and fluoxetine were not converted. Summer and winter inocula did not show significant differences in microbial community composition, but resulted in a slightly different k_b for some pharmaceuticals. Likely microbial activity was responsible instead of community composition. In the same inoculum, different k_b values were measured, depending on initial concentration. In general, biodegradable compounds had a higher k_b when the initial concentration was higher. This demonstrates that Michealis-Menten kinetic theory has shortcomings for some pharmaceuticals at low, environmentally relevant concentrations and that the pharmaceutical concentration should be taken into account when measuring the k_b in order to reliably predict the fate of pharmaceuticals in the WWTP. TiO2 (Core)/Crumpled Graphene Oxide (Shell) Nanocomposites Show Enhanced Photodegradation of Carbamazepine

The presence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic systems is a serious threat to human and ecological health. The photocatalytic degradation of PPCPs via titanium oxide (TiO2) is a well-researched potential solution, but its efficacy is limited by a variety of environmental conditions, such as the presence of natural organic macromolecules (NOM). In this study, we investigate the synthesis and performance of a novel photoreactive composite: a three-dimensional (3D) core (TiO2)-shell (crumpled graphene oxide) composite (TiGC) used as a powerful tool for PPCP removal and degradation in complex aqueous environments. TiGC exhibited a high adsorption capacity (maximum capacity 11.2 mg/g, 100 times larger than bare TiO2) and a 30% enhancement of photodegradation (compared to bare TiO2) in experiments with a persistent PPCP model, carbamazepine (CBZ). Furthermore, the TiGC performance was tested under various conditions of NOM concentration, light intensity, CBZ initial concentration, and multiple cycles of CBZ addition, in order to illustrate that TiGC performance is stable over a range of field conditions (including NOM). The enhanced and stable performance of TiCG to adsorb and degrade CBZ in water extends from its core-shell composite nanostructure: the crumpled graphene oxide shell provides an adsorptive surface that favors CBZ sorption over NOM, and optical and electronic interactions between TiO2 and graphene oxide result in higher hydroxyl radical (•OH) yields than bare TiO2.

A Rapid Analytical Approach for Monitoring Pharmaceuticals in Hospital Wastewater—A DPX-Based Procedure with Environmentally-Friendly Extraction Phase Coupled to High Performance Liquid Chromatography–Diode Array/Fluorescence Detectors

In this study, a novel analytical methodology based on disposable pipette extraction (DPX) was developed using an alternative extraction phase for the extraction/determination of six pharmaceutical compounds, including carbamazepine, diclofenac, naproxen, fluoxetine, losartan and 17α-ethinylestradiol, in samples of hospital wastewater by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to diode array and fluorescence detectors. The performance of three extraction phases was examined, including 3-n-propyl (3-methylpyridinium) silsesquioxane chloride (Si3Py+Cl−), the conductive polymer polypyrrole (PPy), and polypyrrole modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (PPy.CTAB). The optimization of the experimental parameters was performed through univariate and multivariate approaches. The optimized condition was obtained with the use of 20 mg of Si3Py+Cl− as extraction phase; six extraction cycles with 700 μL of sample in each cycle and 15 s of extraction time; three desorption cycles with 100 μL of ACN (same aliquot) and 15 s of desorption time; and sample pH adjusted at 3.5 and addition of 15% (w/v) of NaCl in the sample. The methodology proposed exhibited environmentally-friendly aspects with a significantly reduced volume of organic solvent (only 100 µL) and a small amount of extraction phase (20 mg). In addition, the extraction phase employed exhibits a simple synthetic procedure, low cost, and high stability in organic solvent. Moreover, the method developed exhibits high throughput (extraction time of 6.5 min per sample), and robustness. The analytical figures of merit were obtained using hospital wastewater, and the values were very satisfactory. The correlation coefficients were higher than 0.9710. LODs and LOQs ranged from 0.030 µg L−1 to 1.510 µg L−1 and 0.10 µg L−1 to 5.00 µg L−1, respectively. Relative recoveries varied from 80 to 127%, and intra-day (n = 3) and inter-day (n = 9) precision was lower than 19%.

Removal of Pharmaceuticals from Water by Adsorption and Advanced Oxidation Processes: State of the Art and Trends

Pharmaceutical products have become a necessary part of life. Several studies have demonstrated that indirect exposure of humans to pharmaceuticals through the water could cause negative effects. Raw sewage and wastewater effluents are the major sources of pharmaceuticals found in surface waters and drinking water. Therefore, it is important to consider and characterize the efficiency of pharmaceutical removal during wastewater and drinking-water treatment processes. Various treatment options have been investigated for the removal/reduction of drugs (e.g., antibiotics, NSAIDs, analgesics) using conventional or biological treatments, such as activated sludge processes or bio-filtration, respectively. The efficiency of these processes ranges from 20–90%. Comparatively, advanced wastewater treatment processes, such as reverse osmosis, ozonation and advanced oxidation technologies, can achieve higher removal rates for drugs. Pharmaceuticals and their metabolites undergo natural attenuation by adsorption and solar oxidation. Therefore, pharmaceuticals in water sources even at trace concentrations would have undergone removal through biological processes and, if applicable, combined adsorption and photocatalytic degradation wastewater treatment processes. This review provides an overview of the conventional and advanced technologies for the removal of pharmaceutical compounds from water sources. It also sheds light on the key points behind adsorption and photocatalysis.

Treated Wastewater Irrigation—A Review

As the most important resource for life, water has been a central issue on the international agenda for several decades. Yet, the world’s supply of clean freshwater is steadily decreasing due to extensive agricultural demand for irrigated lands. Therefore, water resources should be used with greater efficiency, and the use of non-traditional water resources, such as Treated Wastewater (TW), should be increased. Reusing TW could be an alternative option to increase water resources. Thus, many countries have decided to turn wastewater into an irrigation resource to help meet urban demand and address water shortages. However, because of the nature of that water, there are potential problems associated with its use in irrigation. Some of the major concerns are health hazards, salinity build-up, and toxicity hazards. The objectives of this comprehensive literature review are to illuminate the importance of using TW in irrigation as an alternative freshwater source and to assess the effects of its use on soil fertility and other soil properties, plants, and public health. The literature review reveals that TW reuse has become part of the extension program for boosting water resource utilization. However, the uncontrolled application of such waters has many unfavorable effects on both soils and plants, especially in the long-term. To reduce these unfavorable effects when using TW in irrigation, proper guidelines for wastewater reuse and management should be followed to limit negative effects significantly.

The Different Facets of Triclocarban: A Review

In the late 1930s and early 1940s, it was discovered that the substitution on aromatic rings of hydrogen atoms with chlorine yielded a novel chemistry of antimicrobials. However, within a few years, many of these compounds and formulations showed adverse effects, including human toxicity, ecotoxicity, and unwanted environmental persistence and bioaccumulation, quickly leading to regulatory bans and phase-outs. Among these, the triclocarban, a polychlorinated aromatic antimicrobial agent, was employed as a major ingredient of toys, clothing, food packaging materials, food industry floors, medical supplies, and especially of personal care products, such as soaps, toothpaste, and shampoo. Triclocarban has been widely used for over 50 years, but only recently some concerns were raised about its endocrine disruptive properties. In September 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned its use in over-the-counter hand and body washes because of its toxicity. The withdrawal of triclocarban has prompted the efforts to search for new antimicrobial compounds and several analogues of triclocarban have also been studied. In this review, an examination of different facets of triclocarban and its analogues will be analyzed.

Occurrence of pharmaceutical residues, personal care products, lifestyle chemicals, illicit drugs and metabolites in wastewater and receiving surface waters of Krakow agglomeration in South Poland

This is the first study of broad range of chemical classes CECs conducted in the upper Wisla river catchment including the biggest WWTPs in this region and surface waters. The list of compounds is extensive and the paper provides, for the first time, better understanding of environmental burden from PCPCs in Poland. Cumulative contribution of hypertension pharmaceuticals, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and lifestyle chemicals was 89% and 95% in wastewater influent, and 75% in wastewater effluent at both WWTPs. Significant removal efficiencies, exceeding 90%, were found for parabens, UV filters, NSAIDs, steroid estrogens, plasticizers, antibacterials/antibiotics, stimulants and metabolites and lifestyle chemicals. The comparison of the average mass loads of CECs between the influent and effluent, has shown that 27% and 29% of all detected CECs were removed by less than 50%. An increase of concentrations of CECs in the effluent was observed for 18% and 20% of all detected CECs in Kujawy and Plaszow WWTPs, respectively. Negative mass balances of fexofenadine, venlafaxine, o-desmethyltramadol, ketamine and temazepam were noted within WWTPs, which are a result of dissolution of persistent contaminants accumulated in aggregates and/or back-transformation or de-conjugation of metabolites into parent compounds. 44 CECs were detected in surface waters located upstream and downstream of the WWTPs. The concentrations of compounds were largely dependent on the dilution factor of WWTP discharge. The risk quotation (RQ) values for compounds present in surface waters were calculated in relation to their potential for bioaccumulation. Among compounds with high potential for bioaccumulation, with log K_OW ≥ 4.5, diclofenac, atorvastatin and triclosan were found to be of high risk. Many CECs with high, moderate or even low environmental impact have shown high potential for bioaccumulation and should be considered as priority at the same risk level. Moreover, possible synergistic action is still of concern.

Employ of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi for pharmaceuticals ibuprofen and diclofenac removal in mesocosm-scale constructed wetlands

This study investigated the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonization on the growth of wetland plants (Glyceria maxima), and treatment performance in constructed wetlands (CWs) under the stress of pharmaceuticals ibuprofen (IBU) and diclofenac (DCF). Results showed that the growth of G. maxima was significantly increased by AMF colonization. AMF significantly increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase and superoxide dismutase) and soluble protein content in wetland plants, but the contents of malondialdehyde and O₂^•- were reduced. The removal efficiencies of TOC, PO₄^3--P, NH₄⁺-N, and TN were increased in AMF+ treatments by 6%, 11%, 15% and 11%, respectively. AMF increased the removal efficiencies of IBU and DCF by 6-14% and 2-21%, respectively, and reduced the content of their metabolites (2-OH IBU, CA IBU and 4'-OH DCF) in the effluent. Besides, the presence of AMF increased the contents of IBU and DCF in plant roots, while decreased their transportation to shoots. AMF symbiosis decreased the contents of IBU metabolites (2-OH IBU and CA IBU) but increased the contents of DCF metabolite (4'-OH DCF) in the roots of the host plant. In conclusion, these results indicated that AMF plays a promising role in CWs for emerging pollutants removal.

Various strategies applied for the removal of emerging micropollutant sulfamethazine: a systematic review

Pharmaceutical active drug(s) especially sulfamethazine (SMZ) is considered as one of the major emerging microcontaminants due its long-term existence in the environmental system and that can influence on the developmental of antibacterial resistance genes. Because of this region it has a great concern in the aquatic system. Moreover, the vast utilization of SMZ, excretion of undigested portion by animals and also through dumping or mishandling, SMZ is frequently detected in various samples (including water) of different places and its surroundings. Additionally, reports shown it has toxic effect against microalgae and mice. Thus, that can lead to several investigators, focusing on removal of SMZ alone or in combination of other drugs in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) either by abiotic and/or biotic treatment methods. The present review provides an overview of the toxic effect of SMZ and SMZ degradation/removal in abiotic and biotic processes. Finally, reveals the need of further implication of integrated treatments (including engineered biological mediators) to understand ideal biological approaches for the mineralization of SMZ.

Degradation of organic pollutants by intimately coupling photocatalytic materials with microbes: a review

With the rapid development of industry and agriculture, large amounts of organic pollutants have been released into the environment. Consequently, the degradation of refractory organic pollutants has become one of the toughest challenges in remediation. To solve this problem, intimate coupling of photocatalysis and biodegradation (ICPB) technology, which allows the simultaneous action of photocatalysis and biodegradation and thus integrates the advantages of photocatalytic reactions and biological treatments, was developed recently. ICPB consists mainly of porous carriers, photocatalysts, biofilms, and an illuminated reactor. Under illumination, photocatalysts on the surface of the carriers convert refractory pollutants into biodegradable products through photocatalytic reactions, after which these products are completely degraded by the biofilms cultivated in the carriers. Additionally, the biofilms are protected by the carriers from the harmful light and free radicals generated by the photocatalyst. Compared with traditional technologies, ICPB remarkably improves the degradation efficiency and reduces the cost of bioremediation. In this review, we introduce the origin and mechanisms of ICPB, discuss the development of reactors, carriers, photocatalysts, and biofilms used in ICPB, and summarize the applications of ICPB to treat organic pollutants. Finally, gaps in this research as well as future perspectives are discussed.

Selective removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products from water by titanium incorporated hierarchical diatoms in the presence of natural organic matter

Natural organic matter (NOM), such as humic acids, fulvic acids, and tannic acids, is ubiquitous in water bodies and hinders the photodegradation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). We prepared titanium incorporated hierarchical diatoms as a novel photocatalyst to selectively remove PPCPs (triclosan, bisphenol A or BPA, and N, N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide or DEET) in the presence of NOM (humic acid). Diatom (Stephanodiscus hantzschii) grown in a titanium(IV) bis(ammonium lactato) dihydroxide solution integrated 7.2% ± 1.4% (mass fraction) of titanium in their cell wall and formed silica-titania frustules. The photodegradation of triclosan, BPA, and DEET by both silica-titania frustules and titania nanopowder (a control photocatalyst) follows pseudo-first-order kinetics. Under ultraviolent light irradiation, the titanium-content-normalized pseudo-first-order removal rate constants of triclosan, BPA, and DEET by silica-titania frustules were 3, 4, and 4-times those by titania nanopowder, respectively, at a humic acid concentration of 10 mg•L^-1. Incorporation of titanium did not alter the morphology and hierarchical nano/microstructures of the diatom. The silica-titania frustules were rich in nanopores with a diameter of 20 ± 4 nm (mean ± standard deviation), allowing PPCPs with a small molecular weight (typically < 600 g•mol^-1) to pass through while efficiently rejecting NOM with high molecular weights. The silica-titania frustules with hierarchical nano/microstructures served as a prefiltration unit by selectively allowing PPCPs to pass through the nanopores and are therefore promising for photodegradation and environmental remediation applications.

Microbial degradation of hydrophobic emerging contaminants from marine sediment slurries (Capbreton Canyon) to pure bacterial strain

Despite emerging contaminants (ECs) are more and more monitored in environmental matrices, there is still a lack of data in marine ecosystems, especially on their fate and degradation potentials. In this work, for the first time, the degradation potential of synthetic musks (galaxolide and tonalide), UV filters (padimate O and octocrylene) and a pharmaceutical compound (carbamazepine) was studied in marine sediment samples, under laboratory conditions using sediment slurry incubations under biotic and abiotic conditions. Minimum half life times under biotic conditions were found at 21 days, 129 days and 199 days for padimate O, galaxolide and carbamazepine, respectively. Enrichments conducted under anoxic and oxic conditions demonstrated that degradations after one month of incubation either under both biotic and abiotic conditions were limited under anoxic conditions compared to oxic conditions for all the contaminants. Novel aerobic bacteria, able to degrade synthetic musks and UV filters have been isolated. These novel strains were mainly related to the Genus Bacillus. Based on these results, the isolated strains able to degrade such ECs, can have a strong implication in the natural resilience in marine environment, and could be used in remediation processes.

An assessment of contamination fingerprinting techniques for determining the impact of domestic wastewater treatment systems on private well supplies

Private wells in Ireland and elsewhere have been shown to be prone to microbial contamination with the main suspected sources being practices associated with agriculture and domestic wastewater treatment systems (DWWTS). While the microbial quality of private well water is commonly assessed using faecal indicator bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, such organisms are not usually source-specific, and hence cannot definitively conclude the exact origin of the contamination. This research assessed a range of different chemical contamination fingerprinting techniques (ionic ratios, artificial sweeteners, caffeine, fluorescent whitening compounds, faecal sterol profiles and pharmaceuticals) as to their use to apportion contamination of private wells between human wastewater and animal husbandry wastes in rural areas of Ireland. A one-off sampling and analysis campaign of 212 private wells found that 15% were contaminated with E. coli. More extensive monitoring of 24 selected wells found 58% to be contaminated with E. coli on at least one occasion over a 14-month period. The application of fingerprinting techniques to these monitored wells found that the use of chloride/bromide and potassium/sodium ratios is a useful low-cost fingerprinting technique capable of identifying impacts from human wastewater and organic agricultural contamination, respectively. The artificial sweetener acesulfame was detected on several occasions in a number of monitored wells, indicating its conservative nature and potential use as a fingerprinting technique for human wastewater. However, neither fluorescent whitening compounds nor caffeine were detected in any wells, and faecal sterol profiles proved inconclusive, suggesting limited suitability for the conditions investigated.

Occurrence and removal of pharmaceutical and personal care products using subsurface horizontal flow constructed wetlands

A significant number of emerging pollutants resulting from point source and diffuse pollution are present in the aquatic environment. These are chemicals that are not commonly monitored, but have the potential to cause adverse effects on human and ecological health. One form of emerging pollutants, pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), are becoming a serious problem in the discharge of domestic wastewater. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine their occurrence in wastewater and surface waters, and to evaluate the efficiency of subsurface horizontal flow constructed wetlands (planted in polyculture and unplanted), in removing two pharmaceuticals: carbamazepine (Cbz) and sildenafil (Sil); and a personal care product: methylparaben (Mp), present in domestic wastewater. The mixed PPCPs were added to wetlands, at nominal concentrations of 200 μg / L for each compound. The working flow of the reactors was 15 mL / min and the hydraulic retention time was three days. The physicochemical parameters evaluated were: organic load, dissolved oxygen, temperature, conductivity, redox potential, dissolved solids, pH and PPCPs concentration. The presence of the three compounds became evident in all sampled sites, with concentrations of up to 10.66 μg / L, 7.24 μg / L and 2.64 μg / L for Cbz, Mp and Sil, respectively. In planted wetlands, removal efficiencies of up to 97% were achieved for Sil, while in the unplanted these were 30% lower. Removal efficiencies greater than 97% were achieved for Mp, however, for Cbz they were less than 10%, evaluated in both treatments. The average removal efficiency for organic load was 95%. It was determined that constructed wetlands can efficiently remove simple molecular structure compounds such as Mp, and complex structures such as Sil. However, Cbz remained as a recalcitrant contaminant.

Rapid remediation of pharmaceuticals from wastewater using magnetic Fe3O4/Douglas fir biochar adsorbents

Modification of commercially available Douglas fir biochar (BC) by iron oxide nanoparticle precipitation from aqueous Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ salt solutions upon NaOH treatment generated a hybrid adsorbent (MBC) that removed three common emerging aqueous contaminants, a stimulant (caffeine) and two anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen and acetylsalicylic acid) through batch sorption. Fe₃O₄ particles (12.3 ± 7.1 nm diameter fundamental particles with aggregates 1-17 μm diameter) dispersed on the biochar surface provided magnetization and created new adsorption sites for the contaminant uptake. These smaller quasi-spherical, octahedral Fe₃O₄ particles as well as the spindle-like Fe₂O₃ particles were observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of MBC, and the composition was confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). Adsorption features were evaluated using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The Langmuir adsorption capacities on MBC at 35 °C have increased from 24.6 ± 0.4 to 75.1 ± 1.8 mg/g for caffeine, 17.5 ± 0.4 to 39.9 ± 1.2 mg/g for ibuprofen and 106.2 ± 2.8 to 149.9 ± 4.5 mg/g for acetylsalicylic acid after Fe₃O₄ modification. Fast adsorption resulted in equilibrium within 5 min. MBC has potential as a low cost, green adsorbent for pharmaceutical mitigation from water with high adsorption capacities and fast kinetics. The Douglas fir biochar is a byproduct waste from a syn-gas from wood production process covering its production costs.

Solar oxidation of toluene over Co doped nano-catalyst

Cobalt (Co) co-doped TiO₂ photo-catalysis were synthesized, characterized and tested toward solar photocatalytic oxidation of toluene (TOL). A multi-technique approach was used to characterize and relate the photo-catalytic property to photo-oxidation performance. Adding Co to TiO₂ significantly changed crystal size and surface morphology (surface area, pore-volume, and pore size), reduced the bandgap energy of TiO₂ and improved the solar photo-oxidation of TOL. Up to 96.5% of TOL conversion (%TN_conv) was achieved by using Co-TiO₂ compared with 28.5% with naked TiO₂. The maximum %TN_conv was achieved at high hydraulic retention time (HRT) ≥ 100 s, Co content in the photo-catalyst of 5 wt% and relative humidity (%RH) of 50%. The mechanism of TOL solar oxidation was related to the concentration of OH• and •O₂^-. radicals produced from the generated electrons and holes on the surface of Co-TiO₂. The products formed during the photo-catalytic oxidation of TOL were mainly CO₂ and water, and minor concentration of benzene and benzaldehyde. Overall, the Co-TiO₂ could be used as a potential photo-catalyst for the oxidation of toluene in gas-phase streams on an industrial scale.

Characterizing a novel in-situ oxygen delivery device for establishing controlled redox zonation within a high infiltration rate sequential biofilter

By applying favorable oxic and oligotrophic conditions through subsequent aeration and an additional infiltration step, the sequential managed aquifer recharge technology (SMART) was proven to better remove trace organic chemicals (TOrCs) than conventional MAR systems. To minimize the physical footprint, pumping costs and hydraulic retention times, as well as to overcome limitations of site-specific heterogeneities of such systems, the SMART concept was further upgraded by two main engineered technologies. This SMARTplus bioreactor is comprised of an infiltration trench and highly homogenous porous media to provide high infiltration rates and plug-flow conditions. Additionally, an in-situ oxygen delivery device, in particular a self-designed PDMS gas-liquid membrane contactor, was designed to establish favorable subsurface oxic conditions. This novel SMARTplus technology was investigated at pilot scale and is designed for advanced water treatment either in the context of water reuse or treatment of impaired surface water. To determine the design specifications and to construct a pilot-scale membrane contactor, the mass transfer coefficients of the PDMS membrane were investigated at lab-scale for varying Reynold numbers (0.2-2). With the help of the customized membrane contactor, homogenous, bubble-free and passive oxygen delivery could be successfully demonstrated at pilot-scale under laminar flow conditions and short contact times. Oxygen concentrations downstream of the membrane contactors met the design specifications (>1 mg/L) as long as the required feed water quality was provided. However, high NH₄⁺ concentrations in the secondary effluent resulted in higher and unsteady oxygen demand than the target oxygen transfer rates could meet and suboxic conditions prevailed. Although a 20-50% enhancement in the removal of certain compounds (4-FAA, antipyrine, sulfamethoxazole, and citalopram) was achieved, demonstration of the full potential of enhanced TOrC removal by SMARTplus was hindered due to unsteady feed water quality.
