Does Parenting Explain the Link Between Cumulative SES Risk and Child Problems in the Context of Parental Depression?

Language use in depressed and non-depressed mothers and their adolescent offspring

BACKGROUND

Approximately 10% of mothers experience depression each year, which increases risk for depression in offspring. Currently no research has analysed the linguistic features of depressed mothers and their adolescent offspring during dyadic interactions. We examined the extent to which linguistic features of mothers' and adolescents' speech during dyadic interactional tasks could discriminate depressed from non-depressed mothers.

METHODS

Computer-assisted linguistic analysis (Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count; LIWC) was applied to transcripts of low-income mother-adolescent dyads (N = 151) performing a lab-based problem-solving interaction task. One-way multivariate analyses were conducted to determine linguistic features hypothesized to be related to maternal depressive status that significantly differed in frequency between depressed and non-depressed mothers and higher and lower risk offspring. Logistic regression analyses were performed to classify between dyads belonging to the two groups.

RESULTS

The results showed that linguistic features in mothers' and their adolescent offsprings' speech during problem-solving interactions discriminated between maternal depression status. Many, but not all effects, were consistent with those identified in previous research using primarily written text, highlighting the validity and reliability of language behaviour associated with depressive symptomatology across lab-based and natural environmental contexts.

LIMITATIONS

Our analyses do not enable to ascertain how mothers' language behaviour may have influenced their offspring's communication patterns. We also cannot say how or whether these findings generalize to other contexts or populations.

CONCLUSION

The findings extend the existing literature on linguistic features of depression by indicating that mothers' depression is associated with linguistic behaviour during mother-adolescent interaction.

Mental health screening for parents following surgical neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) discharge

Admission to the surgical neonatal intensive care unit (sNICU) is a stressful experience. Care is often complex, with inherent risks and potential complications. This study describes the implementation of an outpatient mental health screening process for parents of infants admitted to a sNICU. Parents of infants aged >34 weeks gestation with a congenital anomaly requiring neonatal surgery participated in this prospective observational study. Standardised measures to screen for parenting stress (Parenting Stress Index™ Fourth Edition Short Form) and depressive symptoms (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale) were administered at the first outpatient visit scheduled when the infant's corrected gestational age was 4 months. A triage algorithm was developed, to review the initial screening results prompting appropriate action and intervention. Positive screens were triaged as evaluate (assess within 48 h), targeted information (email contact), or escalate response (same day risk assessment). Demographic factors associated with parental stress and depressive symptoms were explored. Forty parents (response rate: 88 %) participated in screening. A high portion of parents (52.5 %) required secondary screening, for parenting stress (n = 10), depressive symptoms (n = 5) or both stress and depressive symptoms (n = 6). Socioeconomic disadvantage was positively associated with parenting stress (p = 0.02) and greater depressive symptoms with parent education levels (p = 0.01). Results indicate screening of parent mental health in the outpatient setting is feasible. Use of a triage algorithm helped prioritise parent follow-up and facilitate workflows. Parent mental health screening should be prioritised within and beyond the sNICU to support family and infant outcomes during this critical period of development.

Racial/ethnic differences in parenting behaviors among depressed parents

Low parental warmth and high control are associated with parental depression and with the development of depression in children. The majority of this research, however, has focused on non-Hispanic White (NHW) parents. The present study tested whether parenting behaviors differed by race/ethnicity in a sample (N = 169) of parents with a history of depression. Participants were drawn from a randomized trial designed to prevent depression in at-risk adolescents (ages 9-15 years old). All participating parents had a current or past depressive episode within the youth's lifetime. Parents self-classified as 67.5% NHW, 17.2% Latinx (LA), and 15.4% Black (BL). Youths and parents completed standardized positive and negative interaction tasks; trained raters coded the videotaped interactions for parental warmth and control. Analyses examined the impact of race/ethnicity, current parent depression symptoms, context of the discussion (positive/negative task), and demographic covariates on observed parenting behaviors. Results revealed significant interactions among race/ethnicity, depression, and task type. Differences in warmth and control between racial/ethnic groups were more likely to be observed in negative interactions and when parents' depression symptoms were lower. In these circumstances, BL parents were rated as higher in control and lower in warmth than NHW parents. Results add to the literature on racial/ethnic differences in parenting among parents with a history of depression and highlight the importance of assessing parenting in context to capture more subtle patterns of interactions between parents and offspring. The Enduring Importance of Parenting: Caregiving Quality and Fear-Potentiated Startle in Emerging Adults With a Child Maltreatment History

Background: The transition to adulthood is a period of increased risk for emergent psychopathology; emerging adults with a childhood maltreatment history are at risk for poor outcomes. Method: Using a multi-measure, transdisciplinary, cross-sectional design, this study tested whether participant-reported positive parenting, a potential resilience-promoting factor, moderated the association between clinician-rated PTSD symptom severity and a transdiagnostic maladjustment biomarker, fear-potentiated startle (FPS), in a sample of 66 emerging adults (Myears = 18.83, SD = 0.89) with a maltreatment history. We hypothesized that characteristics of effective parenting would moderate the relation between PTSD symptoms and FPS. Results: Results indicated that elevated PTSD, as measured by the CAPS, was associated with a more severe startle reaction. The magnitude of the increase in startle reactivity was moderated by parenting such that those with more positive parenting (Accepting [relative to rejecting]: b = -0.42, p < .001; Psychologically-controlling [relative to autonomy-promoting]: b = 2.96, p = .004) had significantly less reactivity across the task at higher levels of PTSD symptoms. Conclusions: Emerging adults with childhood maltreatment histories, high levels of PTSD symptoms, and who perceive present-day high-quality caregiver support may cope better with novel stressors relative to youth lacking that support, potentially translating to better psychological outcomes.

A Study on the Longitudinal Relation Between Maternal Parenting Stress, Warmth Parenting, and Children’s Aggressive Behavior Using Autoregressive Cross-Lagged Modeling : a Multigroup Analysis Across Income Levels

Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the longitudinal relationship between maternal parenting stress (MPS), warmth parenting (WP), and children’s aggressive behavior (CAB) in early childhood across income levels.Methods: An autoregressive cross-lagged model was used to assess the mothers and children of 723 families from the Panel Study on Korean Children across the sixth (age 5), seventh (age 6), and eighth (age 7) waves, and bootstrapping was conducted to examine the mediation effects. Further, a multigroup analysis was performed to assess the model’s hypothesized relationships for the low-income and middle-income groups. IBM AMOS 23.0 and SPSS Statistics 26 were used to analyze the data.Results: The results are summarized as follows: First, MPS, WP, and CABs remained unchanged over time. Second, MPS had a significantly negative impact on later WP, and WP negatively affected later MPS. Third, prior WP had a significantly negative impact on CAB. Furthermore, the relationship between MPS and CAB was mediated by WP. Lastly, during the study period, the multi-group analysis found no significant differences in the autoregressive cross-lagged model between the two income groups (the low-income and middle-income groups).Conclusion: The findings revealed that MPS reduced WP, which exacerbated CAB. By illustrating the link between MPS, WP, and CAB, it was highlighted that educational interventions for mothers to minimize parenting stress are likely to have a positive influence on children’s aggressive behavior. More implications are also discussed as a result of these findings.

COVID-19 and the Acceleration of Behavioral Parent Training Telehealth: Current Status and Future Directions

The SARS-COV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic and associated social distancing guidelines have accelerated the telehealth transition in mental health. For those providing Behavioral Parent Training (BPT), this transition has called for moving sessions that are traditionally clinic-based, active, and directive to engaging, supporting, and treating families of children with behavior disorders remotely in their homes. Whereas many difficulties accompany this transition, the lessons learned during the current public health crisis have the potential to transform BPT service delivery on a large scale in ways that address many of its long-standing limitations. We describe both challenges and opportunities and consider the possibilities inherent in a large scale BPT service delivery model capable of increasing the reach and impact of evidence-based treatment for all families.
