An overview on the prevalence and potential impact of antimicrobials and antimicrobial resistance in the aquatic environment of India

Origin, types, and contribution of emerging pollutants to environmental degradation and their remediation by physical and chemical techniques

The growing presence of emerging pollutants (EPs) in aquatic environments, as well as their harmful impacts on the biosphere and humans, has become a global concern. Recent developments and advancements in pharmaceuticals, agricultural practices, industrial activities, and human personal care substances have paved the way for drastic changes in EP concentrations and impacts on the ecosystem. As a result, it is critical to mitigate EP's harmful effects before they jeopardize the ecological equilibrium of the overall ecosystem and the sustainable existence of life on Earth. This review comprehensively documented the types, origins, and remediation strategies of EPs, and underscored the significance of this study in the current context. We briefly stated the major classification of EPs based on their organic and inorganic nature. Furthermore, this review systematically evaluates the occurrence of EPs due to the fast-changing ecological scenarios and their impact on human health. Recent studies have critically discussed the emerging physical and chemical processes for EP removal, highlighting the limitations of conventional remediation technologies. We reviewed and presented the challenges associated with EP remediation and degradation using several methods, including physical and chemical methods, with the application of recent technologies. The EP types and various methods discussed in this review help the researchers understand the nature of present-day EPs and utilize an efficient method of choice for EP removal and management in the future for sustainable life and development activities on the planet.

Hidden ecotoxicological dangers: Investigating pathogen circulation and non-toxic risks hazards in a crucial brazilian watershed

Numerous studies evaluate chemical contaminants released by human activities and their effects on biota and aquatic ecosystems. However, few of these studies address non-toxic agents and their potentially harmful effects, which, in a concealed manner, culminate in an increased ecotoxicological risk for aquatic life and public health. This study investigated the presence of toxic and non-toxic pollutants in one of the main watersheds in Northeast Brazil (Rio São Francisco) and proposed a model of dispersion and transfer of resistance among the analyzed bacteria, also assessing the health risks of individuals and aquatic organisms present there. The results are worrying because although most toxic parameters, including physical-chemical and chromatographic aspects, comply with Brazilian environmental standards, non-toxic (microbiological) parameters do not. This research reveals the circulation of pathogens in several points of this hydrographic basin, highlighting the hidden ecotoxicological potential of an aquatic environment considered unaffected by the usual patterns of toxic parameters.

Ln-MOF-Based Hydrogel Films with Tunable Luminescence and Afterglow Behavior for Visual Detection of Ofloxacin and Anti-Counterfeiting Applications

Highly selective and sensitive quantitative detection of ofloxacin (OFX) at ultralow concentrations in aqueous media and development of new afterglow materials remains a challenge. Herein, a new 2D water-stable lanthanide metal-organic framework (NIIC-2-Tb) is proposed, which exhibits high selectivity towards OFX through the luminescence quenching with the lowest detection limit (1.1 × 10-9 M) reported to date and a fast response within 6 s. In addition, the luminescent detection of OFX by NIIC-2-Tb is not affected by typical components of blood plasma and urine. The excellent sensing effect of NIIC-2-Tb is further utilized to prepare a composite functional sensing carrageenan hydrogel material for the rapid detection of OFX in meat in real time and the first discovery of impressive afterglow in MOF-based hydrogels. This study not only presents novel Ln-MOF materials and Ln-MOF-based hydrogel films for luminescent sensing of OFX, but also demonstrates color-tunable luminescent films with afterglow, which expands the application of composite luminescent materials for detection and anti-counterfeiting.

Performance evaluation for the inactivation of multidrug-resistant bacteria in wastewater effluent by different disinfection technologies

The escalating presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in aquatic ecosystems underscores the critical role of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in mitigating antibiotic resistance. Disinfection is the final, pivotal step in WWTPs, and it is essential to control the dissemination of ARB before water discharge. This study utilized both phenotypic analysis and transcriptome (RNA-seq) approach to investigate the efficiency and mechanisms of disinfection using chlorination, ultraviolet (UV), and peracetic acid (PAA) on multidrug-resistant bacteria (MRB). Our results demonstrated that the use of 100 mg min L-1 of chlorine, 8.19 mJ cm-2 of UV irradiation or 50 min mg L-1 of PAA significantly reduced the abundance of MRB. Intriguingly, RNA-seq clarified distinct mechanisms of chlorination and UV disinfection. UV radiation triggered the SOS response to cope with DNA damage, induced the expression of multi-drug resistance genes by increasing the expression of efflux pump transporters. UV radiation also promoted the absorption of iron through chelation and transportation to participate in various cell life processes. Chlorination, on the other hand, significantly up-regulated osmotic response elements, including the synthesis of glycine betaine, iron-sulfur clusters, and related transporters. Both chlorination and UV significantly down-regulated key metabolic pathways (P < 0.05), inhibiting the process of amino acid synthesis and energy metabolism. Imbalance in energy homeostasis was the most important factor leading to cytotoxicity. These results provide useful insights into optimizing the wastewater disinfection process in order to prevent the dissemination of ARB in aquatic environment.
