Abstract
In ectotherms, body size differences between latitudes resulting from shorter activity periods at higher latitudes may disappear due to higher growth rates. Although such latitudinal variations have been examined for various taxa, only a few studies have examined such variations in Japanese vertebrates. Hynobius nigrescens is widely distributed in the northern part of Honshu, Japan, and although their larval period in the wild is shorter at high latitudes, there is no latitudinal variation in the body size of juveniles in the wild. Therefore, larvae may grow faster at high latitudes, and they can grow into juveniles with body sizes similar to those at low latitudes. To examine whether the growth rate of larvae is faster at high latitudes, we reared groups at 15°C and 20°C. We found that the larval period was shorter and the growth rate was greater at high latitudes. Next, we examined whether the body sizes of reared individuals differed between latitudes. We found that the body sizes of metamorphosed juveniles were smaller at high latitudes. Some ectotherms are known to feed more at high latitudes, leading to the disappearance of latitudinal differences in body size between latitudes. In this study, we provided the same amount of food regardless of latitude, which might have caused the differences in body size between latitudes. Our study suggested that the high growth rate at relatively high latitudes can compensate for the short activity period, leading to similar body sizes of juveniles among latitudes.

Abstract
1. Alloparental care in cooperatively-breeding species may alter breeder age-specific survival and reproduction, and subsequently senescence. The helping behaviour itself might also undergo age-related change, and decisions to help in facultative cooperative breeders are likely to be affected by individual condition. 2. Helpers in long-tailed tits (Aegithalos caudatus) assist relatives after failing to raise their own brood, with offspring from helped nests being more likely to recruit into the breeding population. 3. Using data collected over 25 years, we examined the age-trajectories of survival and reproduction in adult long-tailed tits to determine how these were affected by the presence or absence of helpers, and how helper behaviour changed with age. 4. There was evidence for increased reproductive performance with breeder age, but no effect of age on the probability of survival. We found no evidence of significant senescent decline in survival or reproductive performance, although individuals accrued less inclusive fitness in their last year of life. Lifetime reproductive success was positively related to both reproductive lifespan and body mass. Within a season, breeders that were assisted by helpers enjoyed greater reproductive success through enhanced offspring recruitment in the following year. We found no evidence that age affected an individual's propensity to help, or the amount of indirect fitness accrued through helping. 5. We found a positive correlation between lifespan and multiple components of reproductive success, suggesting that individual variation in quality underpins age-related variation in fitness in this species. Helping decisions are driven by condition, and lifetime inclusive fitness of immigrants was predicted by body mass. These findings further support individual heterogeneity in quality being a major driver for fitness gains across the life course of long-tailed tits.

Abstract
Tropical animals are characterized by showy ornaments and conspicuous body colours as compared with their temperate relatives. Some recent studies have hypothesized that sexual selection pressures are stronger in the tropics than in the temperate zone. Although negative correlations between latitude and the degree of sexual dimorphism would support this hypothesis, phylogeny should be taken into account in such comparative studies. Comparisons of the degree of sexual dimorphism in body size and fin lengths among species of the Adrianichthyidae, a freshwater fish family having a wide geographical range throughout Southeast and East Asia, revealed that lower latitude species are sexually more dimorphic in all characters than higher latitude species. Phylogenetic generalized least squares analyses using a mitochondrial DNA phylogeny demonstrated that the negative correlations between latitude and the degree of sexual dimorphism become non-significant when phylogeny is considered, but that the variance in the degree of sexual dimorphism is explained not only by phylogeny but also almost equally by latitude. Ancestral state reconstruction indicated that sexual dimorphisms have evolved independently even within major clades. These findings are consistent with the view that tropical species are exposed to stronger sexual selection pressures than temperate species. We discuss possible causes of the latitudinal variation in sexual selection pressure.

Abstract
The medaka is a fish that has served as a model organism for over a century, yet there is still much to learn about its life in the wild. Here we summarize the current knowledge, highlight recent progress and outline remaining gaps in our understanding of the natural history of medaka. It has also become clear over time that rather than being a single species, medaka comprises an entire species complex, so disentangling the species boundaries is an important goal for future research. Moreover, medaka and other ricefishes exhibit striking functional diversity, little of which has been investigated to date. As such, there are opportunities to use the resources developed for medaka to study other ricefishes, and to learn more about medaka itself in an evolutionary context.

Abstract
Fast-growing genotypes living in time-constrained environments are often more prone to predation, suggesting that growth-predation risk trade-offs are important factors maintaining variation in growth along climatic gradients. However, the mechanisms underlying how fast growth increases predation-mediated mortality are not well understood. Here, we investigated if slow-growing, low-latitude individuals have faster escape swimming speed than fast-growing high-latitude individuals using common frog (Rana temporaria) tadpoles from eight populations collected along a 1500 km latitudinal gradient. We measured escape speed in terms of burst and endurance speeds in tadpoles raised in the laboratory at two food levels and in the presence and absence of a predator (Aeshna dragonfly larvae). We did not find any latitudinal trend in escape speed performance. In low food treatments, burst speed was higher in tadpoles reared with predators but did not differ between high-food treatments. Endurance speed, on the contrary, was lower in high-food tadpoles reared with predators and did not differ between treatments at low food levels. Tadpoles reared with predators showed inducible morphology (increased relative body size and tail depth), which had positive effects on speed endurance at low but not at high food levels. Burst speed was positively affected by tail length and tail muscle size in the absence of predators. Our results suggest that escape speed does not trade-off with fast growth along the latitudinal gradient in R. temporaria tadpoles. Instead, escape speed is a plastic trait and strongly influenced by the interaction between resource level and predation risk.
