Abstract
Enteroviruses, with their diverse clinical manifestations ranging from mild or asymptomatic infections to severe diseases such as poliomyelitis and viral myocarditis, present a public health threat. However, they can also be used as oncolytic agents. This review shows the intricate relationship between enteroviruses and host cell factors. Enteroviruses utilize specific receptors and coreceptors for cell entry that are critical for infection and subsequent viral replication. These receptors, many of which are glycoproteins, facilitate virus binding, capsid destabilization, and internalization into cells, and their expression defines virus tropism towards various types of cells. Since enteroviruses can exploit different receptors, they have high oncolytic potential for personalized cancer therapy, as exemplified by the antitumor activity of certain enterovirus strains including the bioselected non-pathogenic Echovirus type 7/Rigvir, approved for melanoma treatment. Dissecting the roles of individual receptors in the entry of enteroviruses can provide valuable insights into their potential in cancer therapy. This review discusses the application of gene-targeting techniques such as CRISPR/Cas9 technology to investigate the impact of the loss of a particular receptor on the attachment of the virus and its subsequent internalization. It also summarizes the data on their expression in various types of cancer. By understanding how enteroviruses interact with specific cellular receptors, researchers can develop more effective regimens of treatment, offering hope for more targeted and efficient therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
Background RARRES1 is a tumor suppressor protein, and its expression is suppressed in various tumor cells. However, whether it participates in the immune response in kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) is unknown, and the defined mechanism is not clear. Therefore, the mechanism of RARRES1 in KIRC is worthy of investigation. Methods We analysed the expression and function of RARRES1 with The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. The Kaplan–Meier curve was adopted to estimate survival. RARRES1-correlated genes were obtained from the UALCAN database and subjected to Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment and protein–protein interaction (PPI) network analyses. The correlation analysis between tumor-infiltrating immune cells and selected genes were performed with TIMER database. We also investigated the possible function of RARRES1 in KIRC by coculturing Caki-1 cells with THP-1 cells. Immunofluorescence assay was performed to study the RARRES1 expression in difference grade KIRC tissues. Results The expression of RARRES1 was negatively correlated with survival in KIRC patients. The GO biological process term most significantly enriched with the RARRES1-correlated genes was regulation of cell adhesion. ICAM1, which exhibited a relatively highest correlation with RARRES1, is positively correlated with the infiltration level of macrophages. RARRES1 could enhance the expression of ICAM1 in Caki-1 cells and then induce the activation of M1 THP-1 cells to decrease the viability and induce the apoptosis of Caki-1 cells. Conclusion RARRES1 plays an antitumor role by promoting ICAM1 expression and inducing the activation of M1 macrophages. We offer insights into the molecular mechanism of KIRC and reveal a potential therapeutic target.

Abstract
Purpose To identify cytokines in plasma that may predict objective response and progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with chemoradiotherapy. Materials and Methods From April 2016 to May 2017, thirty-one patients with locally advanced inoperable/unresectable NSCLC were included, and treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). No immune checkpoint inhibitors were administered after CCRT. Plasma from each patient was collected before radiotherapy, and 25 cytokines in the plasma were measured by Luminex or U-PLEX assays. Logistic regression and COX regression were performed to identify the predictive factors for objective response and PFS, respectively. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to compare the PFS between the groups. Results High levels of IL-13 and TNF-α, and low levels of ICAM-1, IFN-γ, and soluble PD-L1 (sPD-L1) were significantly associated with objective response (P <0.05). High levels of IL-8, CCL5, and CXCL3 also showed a trend toward association with objective response (P <0.1). The combination of cytokines (IL-8 and ICAM-1, or TNF-α and sPD-L1) improved predictive accuracy. Univariate analysis identified IL-8 and ICAM-1 as potential markers to predict PFS. Multivariate analysis suggested that high level of IL-8 (P =0.010) and low level of ICAM-1 (P =0.011) correlated significantly with a longer PFS. Conclusion IL-8 and ICAM-1 in plasma have the potential to predict objective response and PFS in patients with locally advanced NSCLC underwent chemoradiotherapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many recent studies have investigated the prognostic, diagnostic, and progressive features of soluble intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) in lung cancer patients, but the results remained inconsistent. This study aimed to explore the value of serum sICAM-1 in patients with lung cancer. METHODS A comprehensive systematic literature search in the Wanfang databases, china national knowledge infrastructure, Pubmed, and Embase was carried out update to June 15, 2019. The standard mean difference (SMD), hazard ratio (HR), and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were applied to investigate the effect sizes. RESULTS 23 observational studies were included. According to our results, the serum sICAM-1 concentrations in patients with lung cancer were significantly higher than that in controls (healthy controls: SMD: 4.08, 95% CI: 3.14-5.02, P < 0.001; benign lung diseases controls : SMD: 1.48, 95% CI: 0.23-2.73,P = 0.02). Fortunately, a subgroup analysis was performed by language, treatment status, and lung cancer types, and the statistical results were similar. Serum sICAM-1 levels were markedly higher in stage III/IV than stage I/II (SMD: 1.96, 95% CI: 1.08-2.84, P < 0.001), Additionally, lung cancer patients with lymph node metastasis had a higher concentrations of serum sICAM-1(SMD: 1.83, 95% CI: 0.95-2.72, P < 0.001), as well as with distant metastasis (SMD: 0.86, 95% CI: 0.47-1.25, P < 0.001). Additionally, patients with higher sICAM-1 levels were related to a significantly poorer prognosis (progression free survival: HR: 1.16, 95% CI: 1.07-1.26, P < 0.001; overall survival: HR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.17-1.79, P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Our study suggested that serum sICAM-1 levels may act as a potential marker for diagnosing lung cancer and predicting its staging, and were negatively correlated with prognosis of lung cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gastric cancer (GC) is among the most common forms of cancer affecting the digestive system. This study sought to identify hub genes regulating early GC (EGC) in order to explore their potential for early diagnosis and prognosis of patients. METHODS We utilized a publically available dataset from the Gene Expression Omnibus database (GSE55696). Differences between EGC and LGIN with respect to gene expression were compared using the limma software. Identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were subjected to gene ontology (GO) and pathway enrichment analyses with the DAVID application, and the STRING website and Cytoscape software were used to construct a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network incorporating these DEGs. This network was in turn used to identify hub genes among selected DEGs, which were analyzed with the Kaplan-Meier Plotter database. In addition, Western blotting, qRT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, and UALCAN were all employed to validate the relationship between the expression of these genes and GC patient prognosis. RESULTS A total of 482 DEGs were identified, with GO analyses indicating an increase in the expression of genes linked with the development of cancer. Pathway analyses also indicated that these genes play a role in certain cancer-related pathways. The PPI network highlighted four potential hub genes, of which only ICAM1 was linked to a poor GC patient prognosis. This link between ICAM1 and GC patient outcomes was confirmed via UALCAN, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and qRT-PCR. CONCLUSION ICAM1 may therefore modulate tumor progression in GC, thus potentially representing a valuable prognostic and diagnostic biomarker of EGC.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are established markers of systemic inflammation. Moreover, anemia is a known adverse prognostic factor and reduced haemoglobin to platelet ratio (HPR) seems associate to poor outcomes in urothelial cancer. Aim of the current study was to explore the prognostic value of NLR, HPR and PLR in patients harboring localized RCC. Materials and Methods 184 patients undergoing partial and radical nephrectomy for renal mass in a single hospital were retrospectively analyzed. Uni- and multivariate logistic regressions were performed to assess associations between various risk factors, including NLR, PLR and HPR and locally advanced disease (≤pT2 vs.≥pT3) and tumor grade. Kaplan Meier curves and Cox regressions were constructed to assess the association of NLR, PLR and HPR to recurrence free survival (RFS), cancer specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS). To determine thresholds for variables, we considered the 75th percentile of our distribution of values, which was computed at 3.45 for NLR, 189 for PLR and 0.48 for HPR. A two-sided P<0.05 defined statistical significance. RESULTS Patients with an elevated NLR (>3.45) were more likely to present with≥pT3 stage (p=0.046). RFS was significantly different according to NLR value, with patients having an NLR>3.45 experiencing significantly worst RFS (P=0.019); similarly, an increased PLR was significantly associated to a reduced RFS (P=0.012). Restricting the Cox regression to patients with locally advanced disease (≥pT3), NLR was even more associated to recurrence (HR 3.22; 95%CI: 1.06-9.81, P=0.039). Patients exhibiting an NLR>3.45 (p=0.03) or a PLR>189 (P=0.005) did have a significantly worse CSS, while a HPR<0.48 did not predict CSS (P=0.12) on Kaplan Meier curves. Finally, an increased NLR (P=0.047), increased PLR (P=0.0006) and decreased HPR (P=0.05) were all associated to a poor overall survival on univariate analysis. On multivariate analysis, only HPR remained significantly predictive of OS (HR 0.077; 95%CI: 0.02-0.37, P=0.001). CONCLUSIONS In this single-center study analyzing non-metastatic RCC, an increased NLR was significantly associated to a reduced RFS, CSS and OS on univariate analyses and to RFS on multivariate analysis. Larger prospective studies are needed to validate our findings. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE 4.

Abstract
Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is the most common type of kidney cancer. The present study was conducted to explore the mechanisms and identify the potential target genes for ccRCC using bioinformatics analysis. The microarray data of GSE15641 were screened on Gene-Cloud of Biotechnology Information (GCBI). A total of 32 ccRCC samples and 23 normal kidney samples were used to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between them. Subsequently, the clustering analysis and functional enrichment analysis of these DEGs were performed, followed by protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, and pathway relation network. Additionally, the most significant module based on PPI network was selected, and the genes in the module were identified as hub genes. Furthermore, transcriptional level, translational level and survival analyses of hub genes were performed to verify the results. A total of 805 genes, 403 upregulated and 402 downregulated, were differentially expressed in ccRCC samples compared with normal controls. The subsequent bioinformatics analysis indicated that the small molecule metabolic process and the metabolic pathway were significantly enriched. A total of 7 genes, including membrane metallo-endopeptidase (MME), albumin (ALB), cadherin 1 (CDH1), prominin 1 (ROM1), chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 12 (CXCL12), protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor type C (PTPRC) and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM1) were identified as hub genes. In brief, the present study indicated that these candidate genes and pathways may aid in deciphering the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of ccRCC, and may be used as therapeutic targets and diagnostic biomarkers of ccRCC.

Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the importance of preoperative neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) predicting malignancy in patients who undergo partial nephrectomy due to renal mass. Materials and Methods: Seventy nine patients who underwent open partial nephrectomy for renal masses were included in this retrospective study. In preoperative routine blood tests, renal ultrasonography and contrast-enhanced computed tomography were performed for all patients. Preoperative neutrophil lymphocyte ratio were compared in patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (Group1, 65 patients) and benign lesions (Group 2, 14 patients). The predictive ability of NLR was analyzed by ROC curves and Youden Index method was used to identify the cut-off value for NLR. Results: The mean age of patients was 59.8±11.7 years in Group1 and 57.4±12.6 years in Group 2 (p=0.493). The mean tumor size was 3.8±1.2 cm in Group 1 and 3.3±1.0 cm in Group 2 (p=0.07). The median NLR was 2.48 (1.04) in Group 1 and 1.63 (0.96) in Group 2 (p<0.001). The area under a ROC curve was 0.799 (p<0.001). Conclusions: Preoperative neutrophil lymphocyte ratio may predict renal masses that can not be distinguished radiologically. Our results must be confirmed by large and properly designed prospective, randomized trials.

Abstract
Long non-coding RNAs, a newly discovered category of noncoding genes, play a leading role in various biological processes, including tumorigenesis. In our study, we aimed to examine the TUG1 expression, and explore the influence of TUG1 silencing on cell proliferation and apoptosis in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) cell lines. The TUG1 expression level was detected using quantitative real-time PCR reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction in 40 paired clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) and adjacent paired normal tissues, as well as four RCC cell lines and one normal human proximal tubule epithelial cell line HK-2. Small interfering RNA was applied to suppress the TUG1 expression in RCC cell lines (A489 and A704). In vitro assays were conducted to further deliberate its potential functions in RCC progression. The relative TUG1 expression was significantly higher in ccRCC tissues compared to the adjacent normal renal tissues. In addition, higher TUG1 expression was equally detected in RCC cell lines (particularly in A498 and A704) compared to HK-2. The ccRCC specimens with higher TUG1 expression had a higher Fuhrman grade and larger tumor size than those with lower TUG1 expression. In vitro assays results suggested that knockdown of TUG1 suppressed RCC cells migration, invasion and proliferation, while the apoptosis process was activated. Our results indicate that TUG1 is identified as a novel oncogene in the morbid state of RCC, which potentially acts as a therapeutic target/biomarker in RCC. The graphic abstract of the present work.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In previous experiments, we have found an increased level of class I ADH and total ADH activity in RCC tissues. Changes in cancer cells may be reflected by ADH activity in the serum and could thus be helpful for diagnostics of renal cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate a potential role of ADH and ALDH as tumor markers for RCC. MATERIAL AND METHODS Serum samples were taken from 59 patients with RCC and 52 healthy subjects. Class III and IV of ADH and total ADH activity was measured by the photometric method. For measurement of class I and II ADH and ALDH activity, we employed the fluorometric method. RESULTS The total activity of ADH and ADH I was significantly higher in the serum of patients with every stage of RCC compared to healthy subjects. The diagnostics criteria was higher for ADH I than for total ADH activity. The diagnostic sensitivity for ADH I was 73.36%, specificity 85.61%, predictive values of positive and negative results were 79.12 and 75.03% respectively. Area under ROC curve for ADH I was 0.748 and for total ADH 0.689. CONCLUSION The results suggest a potential role of ADH I as a marker for RCC.

Abstract
Our preliminary study indicated that Engrailed-2 (EN2) is downregulated but also ectopically expressed in clear-cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC), and the absence of EN2 expression was associated with poor histological grade. However, the specific roles of EN2 in CCRCC have yet to be elucidated. In the present study, we examined the effects of inhibiting EN2 expression by human renal tubular epithelial cells (HK-2) and overexpressing EN2 by human clear-cell renal cells (786-O). Results showed that EN2 inhibition accelerated HK-2 cell proliferation, shortened the cell cycle, reduced apoptosis, and acted more invasively. By contrast, EN2 overexpression in 786-O cells decelerated the proliferative ability of 786-O, increased the percentage of cell apoptosis, and weakened the invasive ability. Overall, the results demonstrated that EN2 might play an anti-oncogenic role in oncogenesis and development of CCRCC, thereby maintaining the normal growth of human renal tubular epithelial cells.

Abstract
The relationship between urinary collecting system invasion (UCSI) and oncological outcomes in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients has attracted extensive attention recent years. However, the reports were inconsistent and remain controversial. Thus, we performed a systematic literature search of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and The Cochrane Library databases to identify relevant studies up to June 2015 and conducted a standard meta-analysis of survival outcomes. 17 studies containing 9012 RCC patients satisfied the inclusion criteria. Pooled HRs for overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) were 1.45 (95% CI, 1.26–1.66, P < 0.001) and 2.27 (95% CI, 1.54–3.34, P < 0.001), respectively. Further subgroup analysis suggested that UCSI was significant associated with poor cancer-specific survival (CSS) in stage T1–T2 RCC (HR = 2.05, 95% CI: 1.43–2.96, P < 0.001) but not in stage T3–T4 tumors (HR = 1.08, 95% CI: 0.63–1.85, P = 0.771). Current evidence revealed that UCSI has a significant negative impact on OS and RFS in RCC patients and could be used to predict CSS especially in localized RCC. Thus, RCC patients with UCSI should be paid more attention by clinician and pathologist and require close follow up for their poor prognosis.

Abstract
Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is a cell surface glycoprotein that belongs to immunoglobulin superfamily and plays an important role in tumor cell expansion or metastasis. However, the detailed mechanisms of ICAM-1 in breast cancer remain unclear. In this study, we evaluated the expression level of ICAM-1 in breast cancer using tissue microarray and clinical tissue specimens by immunohistochemical method, and the results revealed that ICAM-1 is highly expressed in the breast cancer tissues. To investigate whether ICAM-1 can affect the metastasis ability in breast cancer, we knocked down ICAM-1 expression in breast cancer cell line MCF-7 by using lentivirus-mediated RNA interference (RNAi). As a result, we stably silenced ICAM-1 expression in MCF-7 cells by infection with lentivirus expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP), the change of metastatic ability of MCF-7 cells was assessed by wound-healing assay, Transwell assay or clone formation assay. Our results showed that silencing of ICAM-1 can inhibit the metastatic ability of MCF-7 cell lines in vitro significantly, and the decreased migration and invasion was accompanied by a reduction of MMP-14. These results implying that ICAM-1 might be involved in the progression of breast cancer metastasis and lentivirus-mediated silencing of ICAM-1 might be a potential therapeutic approach for the treatment of breast cancer.

Abstract
Proteomics study of pancreatic cancer using bodily fluids emphasizes biomarker discovery and clinical application, presenting unique prospect and challenges. Depending on the physiological nature of the bodily fluid and its proximity to pancreatic cancer, the proteomes of bodily fluids, such as pancreatic juice, pancreatic cyst fluid, blood, bile, and urine, can be substantially different in terms of protein constitution and the dynamic range of protein concentration. Thus, a comprehensive discovery and specific detection of cancer-associated proteins within these varied fluids is a complex task, requiring rigorous experiment design and a concerted approach. While major challenges still remain, fluid proteomics studies in pancreatic cancer to date have provided a wealth of information in revealing proteome alterations associated with pancreatic cancer in various bodily fluids.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Increasing evidence suggests that cancer-associated inflammation is associated with poor prognosis in patients with cancer. The role of the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as a predictor in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) remains controversial. We conducted the meta-analysis to determine the association between NLR and clinical outcome of patients with RCC. METHODS AND MATERIALS Studies were identified from PubMed and EMBASE databases in March 2014. Meta-analysis was performed to generate combined HRs with 95% CIs for overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free/progress-free survival (RFS/PFS). RESULTS 15 cohorts containing 3357 patients were included. Our analysis results indicated that elevated NLR predicted poorer OS (HR=1.82, 95% CI 1.51 to 2.19) and RFS/PFS (HR=2.18, 95% CI 1.75 to 2.71) in patients with RCC. These findings were robust when stratified by study region, sample size, therapeutic intervention, types of RCC and study quality. However, it differed significantly by assessment of the cut-off value defining 'elevated NLR' in RFS/PFS (p=0.004). The heterogeneity in our meta-analysis was mild to moderate. CONCLUSIONS Elevated NLR indicates a poorer prognosis for patients with RCC. NLR should be monitored in patients with RCC for rational risk stratification and treatment individualisation.
