Electrochemical synthesis of thin-layered graphene oxide-poly(CTAB) composite for detection of morphine

Application of surfactants in the electrochemical sensing and biosensing of biomolecules and drug molecules

Realizing sensitive and efficient detection of biomolecules and drug molecules is of great significance. Among the detection methods that have been proposed, electrochemical sensing is favored for its outstanding advantages such as simple operation, low cost, fast response and high sensitivity. The unique structure and properties of surfactants have led to a wide range of applications in the field of electrochemical sensors and biosensors for biomolecules and drug molecules. Through the comparative analysis of reported works, this paper summarizes the application modes of surfactants in electrochemical sensors and biosensors for biomolecules and drug molecules, explores the possible electrocatalytic mechanism of their action, and looks forward to the development trend of their applications. This review is expected to provide some new ideas for subsequent related research work.

Persulfate activation using leonardite char-supported nano zero-valent iron composites for styrene-contaminated soil and water remediation

Effective in-situ technology to treat carcinogenic compounds in contaminated areas poses a major challenge. Our objective was to load nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI) onto leonardite char (LNDC), an alternative carbon source from industrial waste, for use as a persulfate (PS) activator for styrene treatment in soil and water. By adding a surfactant during synthesis, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) promotes a flower-like morphology and the nZVI formation in smaller sizes. Results showed that nZVI plays a crucial role in PS activation in both homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can remove 98% of styrene within 20 min. Quenching experiments indicated that singlet oxygen (1O2), superoxide radicals (O2•-), and sulfate radicals (SO4•-) were the main species working together to degrade styrene. XPS analysis also revealed a role of surface oxygen-containing groups (i.e., CO, C-OH) in activating PS for SO4•- and 1O2 generation. The possible reaction mechanism of PS activation by LNDC-CTAB-nZVI composite and factors affecting treatment efficiency (i.e., PS concentration, catalyst dosage, pH, and humic acid) were illustrated. The molarity/molality ratio of PS to nZVI should be set greater than 1 for effective styrene removal. GC-MS analysis showed that styrene was degraded to a less toxic benzaldehyde intermediate. However, the excessive use of PS and catalysts can harm plant growth, requiring a combining approach to achieve safer use for real applications. Overall results supported the use of the LNDC-CTAB-nZVI/PS system as an efficient in-situ treatment technology for soil and water remediation.

Porphyrin as a Cryoprotectant for Graphene Oxide-Coated Gold Nanorods to Produce Conjugated Product with Improved Stability and Opto-Phototherapeutic Properties

Graphene oxide (GO) as a coating material for gold nanorods (AuNRs) has gained interest in reducing toxicity and improving the photothermal profiling of AuNRs. However, there is still a challenge regarding the storage of colloidal suspensions of GO-coated AuNRs (GO@AuNRs). Hence, the conjugation of GO@AuNRs to meso-tetra-(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (TPPS4), an anionic water-soluble porphyrin, has been reported to enhance their re-dispensability and improve their phototherapeutic properties. The AuNRs and GO were synthesised using seed-mediated and Hummers' methods, respectively. The GO@AuNRs were conjugated to TPPS4 and characterised using ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) spectroscopy, zeta analyser, dynamic light scattering (DLS), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), x-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) before freeze-drying. The results showed that the AuNRs were sandwiched between GO and TPPS4. After freeze-drying, the freeze-dried conjugate was dispensed in deionised water without adding cryoprotectants and its properties were compared to those of the unfreeze-dried conjugate. The results showed that the freeze-dried conjugate contained similar optical properties to the unfreeze-dried conjugate. However, the bare GO@AuNRs showed a change in the optical properties after freeze-drying. These results revealed that porphyrin is an excellent additive to reduce the freeze-drying stress tolerance of GO@AuNRs. The freeze-dried conjugate also showed both singlet oxygen and photothermal properties of GO@AuNRs and porphyrin. These results indicated that the freeze-dried conjugate is a promising dual photodynamic and photothermal agent, and porphyrin can act as a cryoprotectant.

Optimization and analytical behavior of a morphine electrochemical sensor in environmental and biological samples based on graphite rod electrode using graphene/Co3O4 nanocomposite

In this research, a new sensor based on graphene/Co₃O₄ (Gr/Co₃O₄) nanocomposite was employed for electrochemically determination of morphine (MOR). The modifier was synthesized with a simple hydrothermal technique and well characterized using X-ray difraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) tools. The modified graphite rod electrode (GRE) was revealed a high electrochemical catalytic activity for the MOR oxidation and employed for the electroanalysis of trace MOR concentration by means of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) technique. At the optimum experimental factors, the resulting sensor offered a good response for MOR in the concentration range of 0.5-100.0 μM with a detection limit of 80 nM. In addition, the modified electrode demonstrated an acceptable selectivity, stability and reproducibility. This assay was also provided a valid platform for the detection of MOR in environmental and biological samples with acceptable recoveries and RSD in the range of 97.2-102.8% and 1.7-3.4%, respectively. Taking to the simplicity, low cost and short analysis time, this approach is suggested for clinical, environmental and forensic testing of MOR.

Screen-Printed Graphite Electrode Modified with Graphene-Co3O4 Nanocomposite: Voltammetric Assay of Morphine in the Presence of Diclofenac in Pharmaceutical and Biological Samples

This work focuses on the development of a novel electrochemical sensor for the determination of morphine in the presence of diclofenac. The facile synthesis of graphene-Co₃O₄ nanocomposite was performed. The prepared material (graphene-Co₃O₄ nanocomposite) was analyzed by diverse microscopic and spectroscopic approaches for its crystallinity, composition, and morphology. Concerning the electrochemical determinations, after drop-casting the as-fabricated graphene-Co₃O₄ nanocomposite on the surface of a screen-printed graphite electrode (SPGE), their electrochemical performance was scrutinized towards the morphine detection. It was also found that an SPGE modified by a graphene-Co₃O₄ nanocomposite exhibited better electrocatalytic activity for morphine oxidation than unmodified electrode. Under optimal conditions, the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was employed to explore the present sensor (graphene-Co₃O₄/SPGE), the findings of which revealed a linear dynamic range as broad as 0.02-575.0 µM and a limit of detection (LOD) as narrow as 0.007 μM. The sensitivity was estimated to be 0.4 µM/(µA cm²). Furthermore, the graphene-Co₃O₄/SPGE sensor demonstrated good analytical efficiency for sensing morphine in the presence of diclofenac in well-spaced anodic peaks. According to the DPV results, this sensor displayed two distinct peaks for the oxidation of morphine and diclofenac with 350 mV potential difference. In addition, the graphene-Co₃O₄/SPGE was explored for voltammetric determination of diclofenac and morphine in pharmaceutical and biological specimens of morphine ampoule, diclofenac tablet, and urine, where recovery rates close to 100% were recorded for all of the samples.

Graphene-Based Electrochemical Sensors for Psychoactive Drugs

Sensors developed from nanomaterials are increasingly used in a variety of fields, from simple wearable or medical sensors to be used at home to monitor health, to more complicated sensors being used by border customs or aviation industries. In recent times, nanoparticle-based sensors have begun to revolutionize drug-detection techniques, mainly due to their affordability, ease of use and portability, compared to conventional chromatography techniques. Thin graphene layers provide a significantly high surface to weight ratio compared to other nanomaterials, a characteristic that has led to the design of more sensitive and reliable sensors. The exceptional properties of graphene coupled with its potential to be tuned to target specific molecules have made graphene-based sensors one of the most popular and well-researched sensing materials of the past two decades with applications in environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, and industries. Here, we present a review of developments in the applications of graphene-based sensors in sensing drugs such as cocaine, morphine, methamphetamine, ketamine, tramadol and so forth in the past decade. We compare graphene sensors with other sensors developed from ultrathin two-dimensional materials, such as transition-metal dichalcogenides, hexagonal boron nitrate, and MXenes, to measure drugs directly and indirectly, in various samples.

Advances of Drugs Electroanalysis Based on Direct Electrochemical Redox on Electrodes: A Review

The strong development of mankind is inseparable from the proper use of drugs, and the electroanalytical research of drugs occupies an important position in the field of analytical chemistry. This review mainly elaborates the research progress of drugs electroanalysis based on direct electrochemical redox on various electrodes for the recent decade from 2011 to 2021. At first, we summarize some frequently used electrochemical data processing and electrochemical mechanism research derivation methods in the literature. Then, according to the drug therapeutic and application/usage purposes, the research progress of drugs electrochemical analysis is classified and discussed, where we focus on drugs electrochemical reaction mechanism. At the same time, the comparisons of electrochemical sensing performance of the drugs on various electrodes from recent studies are listed, so that readers can more intuitively compare and understand the electroanalytical sensing performance of each modified electrode for each of the drug. Finally, this review discusses the shortcomings and prospects of the drugs electroanalysis based on direct electrochemical redox research.

Dual Naked-Eye and Optical Chemosensor for Morphine Detection in Biological Real Samples Based on Cr(III) Metal-Organic Framework Nanoparticles

The analytical detection and quantification of abuse drugs such as morphine (MOR) in biological samples are vital missions and remains to attract challenges for forensic toxicology, law enforcement, world antidoping organization, and social health fields. MOR, a benchmark analgesic drug known as "pain killer", is one of the powerful opioid medications for relieving pain, and overdose of MOR is toxic. In this article, novel promising chromium metal-organic framework nanoparticles [Cr(III)-MOF-NPs] were produced via facile synthesis and characterized using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, elemental analysis, UV-vis, Fourier transform infrared, and thermogravimetry/differential scanning calorimetry, as well as photoluminescence (PL) investigation and magnetic properties. The PL study results revealed that the Cr(III)-MOF-NPs exhibited an emission band at 593 nm. The Cr(III)-MOF-NPs could be used in fast, selective, and sensitive MOR detection and quantification. Under the optimum experimental conditions, with the addition of MOR, a blueshift from 593 to 566 nm occurred with a remarkable PL intensity enhancement, and the color changed from brown to yellow (visually/naked-eye detection). The Cr(III)-MOF-NPs optical chemosensor exhibited a stable response for MOR in a concentration range between 0.1 and 350 nM. The detection and quantification limits were 0.167 and 0.443 nM, respectively, with a correlation coefficient (r 2) of 0.96. The developed PL chemosensor showed high selectivity for MOR over other competing interfering matrices. Moreover, the ultrasensitive chemosensor was extensively used for the determination of MOR spiked in different real samples (serum and urine samples) with acceptable recoveries and satisfactory results.
