Implications of Social Groups on Sedentary Behavior of Children with Autism: A Pilot Study

Targeting IEP Social Goals for Children with Autism in an Inclusive Summer Camp

Children with autism spectrum disorder demonstrate challenges in socialization that can interfere with their participation in common childhood activities and can persist or worsen if not addressed. The purpose of this study was to assess whether individualized education program (IEP) social goals could be targeted by a supervised paraprofessional during a short-term inclusive summer camp program. Data were collected using a concurrent multiple baseline design across four children. Results showed that following a 2-week summer camp program all participants made social improvements, reaching their year-long IEP goals, that maintained at follow-up in natural environments. Further, the paraprofessionals reached fidelity of implementation. Findings are discussed in terms of the value and feasibility of providing social interventions in inclusive summer camps.

Physical activity levels and social interactions of preschoolers with and without disabilities

This study examined differences of physical activity levels and social interactions among preschoolers with/without disabilities and those at risk for a developmental delay (DD). Sixty preschoolers (20 in each group) were film during their designated large gross motor time. Their physical activity levels and social interaction were examined using the physical activity level screening. Regarding physical activity levels, the result of a two-way analysis of variance indicated significant main effects for groups, F(2,54)=4.192, P=0.02; preschoolers at risk for a DD were more active than preschoolers without disabilities, P=0.02. For social interaction, a significant main effect for groups, F(2,54)=8.994, P<0.001 was found; Preschoolers at risk for a DD were more interactive than preschoolers with/without disabilities, P=0.001 and P=0.002, respectively. There were no significant gender differences across three groups on physical activity levels and social interactions. Although preschoolers at risk for a DD was more active and interactive than the other groups, preschoolers across three groups engaged in light physical activity levels, and had limited social interactions with peers.

Scoping Review: Physical Activity and Social Functioning in Young People With Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects ~1 in 59 people in North America and diagnoses continue to rise (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). Unfortunately, the exact cause of ASD is unknown and therapy remains the primary means of intervention. People with ASD experience social and behavioral deficits associated with the disorder, which affect all aspects of life such as academics, relationships, and physical activity. Research has shown a relationship between physical activity and social skills in typically developing individuals; however, this relationship is less understood in people with ASD. The purpose of this scoping review was to uncover what is known about ASD, physical activity, and social functioning. The authors searched four databases and included 40 primary research articles in the review, most of which demonstrated a relationship between physical activity and social functioning for people with ASD. The relationship appears bidirectional: social functioning influences physical activity (to a lesser extent) and physical activity influences social functioning (to a greater extent). Regrettably, there were many limitations in these articles, such as small sample sizes and the under-representation of females and adults. Therefore, the review highlights several directions for future research.
