Abstract
Bioactive glasses are inorganic biocompatible materials that can find applications in many biomedical fields. The main application is bone and dental tissue engineering. However, some applications in contact with soft tissues are emerging. It is well known that both bulk (such as composition) and surface properties (such as morphology and wettability) of an implanted material influence the response of cells in contact with the implant. This review aims to elucidate and compare the main strategies that are employed to modulate cell behavior in contact with bioactive glasses. The first part of this review is focused on the doping of bioactive glasses with ions and drugs, which can be incorporated into the bioceramic to impart several therapeutic properties, such as osteogenic, proangiogenic, or/and antibacterial ones. The second part of this review is devoted to the chemical functionalization of bioactive glasses using drugs, extra-cellular matrix proteins, vitamins, and polyphenols. In the third and final part, the physical modifications of the surfaces of bioactive glasses are reviewed. Both top-down (removing materials from the surface, for example using laser treatment and etching strategies) and bottom-up (depositing materials on the surface, for example through the deposition of coatings) strategies are discussed.

Abstract
The repair of bone defects remains a major challenge in the clinic, and treatment requires bone grafts or bone replacement materials. Existing biomaterials have many limitations and cannot meet the various needs of clinical applications. To treat bone defects, we constructed a nanohydroxyapatite (nHA)/methylacrylylated silk fibroin (MASF) composite biological scaffold using photocurable 3D printing technology. In this study, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to detect the changes in the morphological structure of the composite scaffold with different contents of nanohydroxyapatite, and FTIR was used to detect the functional groups and chemical bonds in the composite scaffold to determine the specific components of the scaffold. In in vitro experiments, bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells from SD rats were cocultured with scaffolds soaking solution, and the cytotoxicity, cell proliferation, Western blot analysis, Quantitative real-time PCR analysis, bone alkaline phosphatase activity and alizarin red staining of scaffolds were detected to determine the biocompatibility of scaffolds and the effect of promoting proliferation and osteogenesis of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in vitro. In the in vivo experiment, the skull defect was constructed by adult SD rats, and the scaffold was implanted into the skull defect site. After 4 weeks and 8 weeks of culture, the specific osteogenic effect of the scaffold in the skull defect site was detected by animal micro-CT, hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining and Masson's staining. Through the analysis of the morphological structure of the scaffold, we found that the frame supported good retention of the lamellar structure of silk fibroin, when mixed with nHA, the surface of the stent was rougher, the cell contact area increased, and cell adhesion and lamellar microstructure for cell migration and proliferation of the microenvironment provided a better space. FTIR results showed that the scaffold completely retained the β -folded structure of silk fibroin, and the scaffold composite was present without obvious impurities. The staining results of live/dead cells showed that the constructed scaffolds had no significant cytotoxicity, and thw CCK-8 assay also showed that the constructed scaffolds had good biocompatibility. The results of osteogenic induction showed that the scaffold had good osteogenic induction ability. Moreover, the results also showed that the scaffold with a MASF: nHA ratio of 1: 0.5 (SFH) showed better osteogenic ability. The micro-CT and bone histometric results were consistent with the in vitro results after stent implantation, and there was more bone formation at the bone defect site in the SFH group.This research used photocurable 3D printing technology to successfully build an osteogenesis bracket. The results show that the constructed nHA/MASF biological composite material, has good biocompatibility and good osteogenesis function. At the same time, in the microenvironment, the material can also promote bone defect repair and can potentially be used as a bone defect filling material for bone regeneration applications.

Abstract
Additive Manufacturing (AM) has recently demonstrated significant medical progress. Due to advancements in materials and methodologies, various processes have been developed to cater to the medical sector's requirements, including bioprinting and 4D, 5D, and 6D printing. However, only a few studies have captured these emerging trends and their medical applications. Therefore, this overview presents an analysis of the advancements and achievements obtained in AM for the medical industry, focusing on the principal trends identified in the annual report of AM3DP.

Abstract
Printable electronics for neurotechnology is a rapidly emerging field that leverages various printing techniques to fabricate electronic devices, offering advantages in rapid prototyping, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. These devices have promising applications in neurobiology, enabling the recording of neuronal signals and controlled drug delivery. This review provides an overview of printing techniques, materials used in neural device fabrication, and their applications. The printing techniques discussed include inkjet, screen printing, flexographic printing, 3D printing, and more. Each method has its unique advantages and challenges, ranging from precise printing and high resolution to material compatibility and scalability. Selecting the right materials for printable devices is crucial, considering factors like biocompatibility, flexibility, electrical properties, and durability. Conductive materials such as metallic nanoparticles and conducting polymers are commonly used in neurotechnology. Dielectric materials, like polyimide and polycaprolactone, play a vital role in device fabrication. Applications of printable devices in neurotechnology encompass various neuroprobes, electrocorticography arrays, and microelectrode arrays. These devices offer flexibility, biocompatibility, and scalability, making them cost-effective and suitable for preclinical research. However, several challenges need to be addressed, including biocompatibility, precision, electrical performance, long-term stability, and regulatory hurdles. This review highlights the potential of printable electronics in advancing our understanding of the brain and treating neurological disorders while emphasizing the importance of overcoming these challenges.

Abstract
Novel tissue regeneration strategies are constantly being developed worldwide. Research on bone regeneration is noteworthy, as many promising new approaches have been documented with novel strategies currently under investigation. Innovative biomaterials that allow the coordinated and well-controlled repair of bone fractures and bone loss are being designed to reduce the need for autologous or allogeneic bone grafts eventually. The current engineering technologies permit the construction of synthetic, complex, biomimetic biomaterials with properties nearly as good as those of natural bone with good biocompatibility. To ensure that all these requirements meet, bioactive molecules are coupled to structural scaffolding constituents to form a final product with the desired physical, chemical, and biological properties. Bioactive molecules that have been used to promote bone regeneration include protein growth factors, peptides, amino acids, hormones, lipids, and flavonoids. Various strategies have been adapted to investigate the coupling of bioactive molecules with scaffolding materials to sustain activity and allow controlled release. The current manuscript is a thorough survey of the strategies that have been exploited for the delivery of biomolecules for bone regeneration purposes, from choosing the bioactive molecule to selecting the optimal strategy to synthesize the scaffold and assessing the advantages and disadvantages of various delivery strategies.

Abstract
Immersion precipitation three-dimensional printing (ip3DP) and freeform polymer precipitation (FPP) are unique and versatile methods of 3D printing to fabricate 3D structures based on nonsolvent-induced phase separation via direct ink writing (DIW). Immersion precipitation involves complex dynamics among solvents, nonsolvents, and dissolved polymers, and the printability of 3D models in these methods requires further understanding. To this end, we characterized these two methods of 3D printing using polylactide (PLA) dissolved in dichloromethane (7.5-30% w/w) as model inks. We analyzed the rheological properties of the solutions and the effect of printing parameters on solvent-nonsolvent diffusion to achieve printability. The PLA inks exhibited shear-thinning properties, and their viscosities varied over three orders of magnitude (10-1∼102 Pa·s). A processing map was presented to understand the ideal ranges of the concentration of PLA in inks and the nozzle diameter to ensure printability, and the fabrication of complex 3D structures was fabricated with adequate applied pressure and nozzle speed. The processing map also highlighted the advantages of embedded 3D printing over solvent-cast 3D printing based on solvent evaporation. Lastly, we demonstrated that the porosity of the interface and inner structure of the printed objects was readily tailored by the concentration of the PLA and the porogen added to the ink. The methods presented here offer new perspectives to fabricate micro-to-centimeter objects of thermoplastics with nanometer-scale inner pores and provide guidelines for successful embedded 3D printing based on immersion precipitation.

Abstract
Selective laser sintering (SLS) is a single-step, three-dimensional printing (3DP) process that is gaining momentum in the manufacturing of pharmaceutical dosage forms. It also offers opportunities for manufacturing various pharmaceutical dosage forms with a wide array of drug delivery systems. This research aimed to introduce carbonyl iron as a multifunctional magnetic and heat conductive ingredient for the fabrication of oral tablets containing isoniazid, a model antitubercular drug, via SLS 3DP process. Furthermore, the effects of magnetic iron particles on the drug release from the SLS printed tablets under a specially designed magnetic field was studied. Optimization of tablet quality was performed by adjusting SLS printing parameters. The independent factors studied were laser scanning speed, hatching space, and surface/chamber temperature. The responses measured were printed tablets' weight, hardness, disintegration time, and dissolution performance. It has been observed that, for the drug formulation with carbonyl iron, due to its inherent thermal conductivity, sintering tablets required relatively lower laser energy input to form the tablets of the same quality attributes as the other batches that contained no magnetic particles. Also, printed tablets with carbonyl iron released 25% more drugs under a magnetic field than those without it. It can be claimed that magnetic nanoparticles appear as an alternative conductive material to facilitate the sintering process during SLS 3DP of dosage forms.

Abstract
Three-dimensional printing enables building objects shaped with a large degree of freedom. Additional functionalities can be included by modifying the printing material, e.g., by embedding nanoparticles in the molten polymer feedstock, the resin, or the solution used for printing, respectively. Such composite materials may be stronger or more flexible, conductive, magnetic, etc. Here, we give an overview of magnetic composites, 3D-printed by different techniques, and their potential applications. The production of the feedstock is described as well as the influence of printing parameters on the magnetic and mechanical properties of such polymer/magnetic composites.

Abstract
Tissue engineering and cell therapy are very attractive in terms of potential applications but remain quite challenging regarding the clinical aspects. Amongst the different strategies proposed to facilitate their implementation in clinical practices, biodegradable microparticles have shown promising outcomes with several advantages and potentialities. This critical review aims to establish a survey of the most relevant materials and processing techniques to prepare these micro vehicles. Special attention will be paid to their main potential applications, considering the regulatory constraints and the relative easiness to implement their production at an industrial level to better evaluate their application in clinical practices.

Abstract
Recently, additive manufacturing (AM) processes applied to the micrometer range are subjected to intense development motivated by the influence of the consolidated methods for the macroscale and by the attraction for digital design and freeform fabrication. The integration of AM with the other steps of conventional micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) fabrication processes is still in progress and, furthermore, the development of dedicated design methods for this field is under development. The large variety of AM processes and materials is leading to an abundance of documentation about process attempts, setup details, and case studies. However, the fast and multi-technological development of AM methods for microstructures will require organized analysis of the specific and comparative advantages, constraints, and limitations of the processes. The goal of this paper is to provide an up-to-date overall view on the AM processes at the microscale and also to organize and disambiguate the related performances, capabilities, and resolutions.

Abstract
Seeding materials with living cells has been-and still is-one of the most promising approaches to reproduce the complexity and the functionality of living matter. The strategies to associate living cells with materials are limited to cell encapsulation and colonization, however, the requirements for these two approaches have been seldom discussed systematically. Here we propose a simple two-dimensional map based on materials' pore size and the cytocompatibility of their fabrication process to draw, for the first time, a guide to building cellularized materials. We believe this approach may serve as a straightforward guideline to design new, more relevant materials, able to seize the complexity and the function of biological materials. Abstract
Abstract
3D printing belongs to the emerging technologies of our time. Describing diverse specific techniques, 3D printing enables rapid production of individual objects and creating shapes that would not be produced with other techniques. One of the drawbacks of typical 3D printing processes, however, is the layered structure of the created parts. This is especially problematic in the production of optical elements, which in most cases necessitate highly even surfaces. To meet this challenge, advanced 3D printing techniques as well as other sophisticated solutions can be applied. Here, we give an overview of 3D printed optical elements, such as lenses, mirrors, and waveguides, with a focus on freeform optics and other elements for which 3D printing is especially well suited.

Abstract
We present a comparison of the influence of the conditioning temperature of microspheres made of medical grade poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) and polylactide with 4 wt % of D-lactide content (PLA) on the thermal and structural properties. The microspheres were fabricated using the solid-in-oil-in-water method for applications in additive manufacturing. The microspheres were annealed below the glass transition temperature (Tg), above Tg but below the onset of cold crystallization, and at two temperatures selected from the range of cold crystallization corresponding to the crystallization of the α’ and α form of poly(L-lactide), i.e., at 40, 70, 90, and 120 °C, in order to verify the influence of the conditioning temperature on the sinterability of the microspheres set as the sintering window (SW). Based on differential scanning calorimetry measurements, the SWs of the microspheres were evaluated with consideration of the existence of cold crystallization and reorganization of crystal polymorphs. The results indicated that the conditioning temperature influenced the availability and range of the SWs depending on the D-lactide presence. We postulate the need for an individual approach for polylactide powders in determining the SW as a temperature range free of any thermal events. We also characterized other core powder characteristics, such as the residual solvent content, morphology, particle size distribution, powder flowability, and thermal conductivity, as key properties for successful laser sintering. The microspheres were close to spheres, and the size of the microspheres was below 100 µm. The residual solvent content decreased with the increase of the annealing temperature. The thermal conductivities were 0.073 and 0.064 W/mK for PLA and PLLA microspheres, respectively, and this depended on the spherical shape of the microspheres. The wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) studies proved that an increase in the conditioning temperature caused a slight increase in the crystallinity degree for PLLA microspheres and a clear increase in crystallization for the PLA microspheres.

Abstract
This studied aimed at improving the mechanical properties for a new biopolymer feedstock using laser-sintering technology, especially when its laser-sintered parts are intended to be applied in the industrial and medical fields. Process parameter optimization and thermal post-processing are two approaches proposed in this work to improve the mechanical properties of laser-sintered 10 wt % cellulose-polylactic acid (10%-CPLA) parts. Laser-sintering experiments using 23 full factorial design method were conducted to assess the effects of process parameters on parts’ mechanical properties. A simulation of laser-energy distribution was carried out using Matlab to evaluate the experimental results. The characterization of mechanical properties, crystallinity, microstructure, and porosity of laser-sintered 10%-CPLA parts after thermal post-processing of different annealing temperatures was performed to analyze the influence of thermal post-processing on part properties. Image analysis of fracture surfaces was used to obtain the porosity of laser-sintered 10%-CPLA parts. Results showed that the optimized process parameters for mechanical properties of laser-sintered 10%-CPLA parts were laser power 27 W, scan speed 1600 mm/s, and scan spacing 0.1 mm. Thermal post-processing at 110 °C produced best properties for laser-sintered 10%-CPLA parts.

Abstract
AbstractPolylactic acid (PLA) is one of the most commonly used materials in the biomedical sector because of its processability, mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Among the different techniques that are feasible to process this biomaterial, additive manufacturing (AM) has gained attention recently, as it provides the possibility of tuning the design of the structures. This flexibility in the design stage allows the customization of the parts in order to optimize their use in the tissue engineering field. In the recent years, the application of PLA for the manufacture of bone scaffolds has been especially relevant, since numerous studies have proven the potential of this biomaterial for bone regeneration. This review contains a description of the specific requirements in the regeneration of bone and how the state of the art have tried to address them with different strategies to develop PLA-based scaffolds by AM techniques and with improved biofunctionality.

Abstract
Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are of high interest for recent electronic applications. Their applications range from medicine to measurement technology, from microfluidics to the Internet of Things (IoT). In many cases, MEMS elements serve as sensors or actuators, e.g., in recent mobile phones, but also in future autonomously driving cars. Most MEMS elements are based on silicon, which is not deformed plastically under a load, as opposed to metals. While highly sophisticated solutions were already found for diverse MEMS sensors, actuators, and other elements, MEMS fabrication is less standardized than pure microelectronics, which sometimes blocks new ideas. One of the possibilities to overcome this problem may be the 3D printing approach. While most 3D printing technologies do not offer sufficient resolution for MEMS production, and many of the common 3D printing materials cannot be used for this application, there are still niches in which the 3D printing of MEMS enables producing new structures and thus creating elements for new applications, or the faster and less expensive production of common systems. Here, we give an overview of the most recent developments and applications in 3D printing of MEMS.

Abstract
The fabrication technique determines the physicochemical and biological properties of scaffolds, including the porosity, mechanical strength, osteoconductivity, and bone regenerative potential. Biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP)-based scaffolds are superior in bone tissue engineering due to their suitable physicochemical and biological properties. We developed an indirect selective laser sintering (SLS) printing strategy to fabricate 3D microporous BCP scaffolds for bone tissue engineering purposes. The green part of the BCP scaffold was fabricated by SLS at a relevant low temperature in the presence of epoxy resin (EP), and the remaining EP was decomposed and eliminated by a subsequent sintering process to obtain the microporous BCP scaffolds. Physicochemical properties, cell adhesion, biocompatibility, in vitro osteogenic potential, and rabbit critical-size cranial bone defect healing potential of the scaffolds were extensively evaluated. This indirect SLS printing eliminated the drawbacks of conventional direct SLS printing at high working temperatures, i.e. wavy deformation of the scaffold, hydroxyapatite decomposition, and conversion of β-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) to α-TCP. Among the scaffolds printed with various binder ratios (by weight) of BCP and EP, the scaffold with 50/50 binder ratio (S4) showed the highest mechanical strength and porosity with the smallest pore size. Scaffold S4 showed the highest effect on osteogenic differentiation of precursor cells in vitro, and this effect was ERK1/2 signaling-dependent. Scaffold S4 robustly promoted precursor cell homing, endogenous bone regeneration, and vascularization in rabbit critical-size cranial defects. In conclusion, BCP scaffolds fabricated by indirect SLS printing maintain the physicochemical properties of BCP and possess the capacity to recruit host precursor cells to the defect site and promote endogenous bone regeneration possibly via the activation of ERK1/2 signaling.

Abstract
The regenerative medicine field is seeking novel strategies for the production of synthetic scaffolds that are able to promote the in vivo regeneration of a fully functional tissue. The choices of the scaffold formulation and the manufacturing method are crucial to determine the rate of success of the graft for the intended tissue regeneration process. On one hand, the incorporation of bioactive compounds such as growth factors and drugs in the scaffolds can efficiently guide and promote the spreading, differentiation, growth, and proliferation of cells as well as alleviate post-surgical complications such as foreign body responses and infections. On the other hand, the manufacturing method will determine the feasible morphological properties of the scaffolds and, in certain cases, it can compromise their biocompatibility. In the case of medicated scaffolds, the manufacturing method has also a key effect in the incorporation yield and retained activity of the loaded bioactive agents. In this work, solvent-free methods for scaffolds production, i.e., technological approaches leading to the processing of the porous material with no use of solvents, are presented as advantageous solutions for the processing of medicated scaffolds in terms of efficiency and versatility. The principles of these solvent-free technologies (melt molding, 3D printing by fused deposition modeling, sintering of solid microspheres, gas foaming, and compressed CO2 and supercritical CO2-assisted foaming), a critical discussion of advantages and limitations, as well as selected examples for regenerative medicine purposes are herein presented.

Abstract
In recent years remarkable efforts have been made to produce artificial bone through tissue engineering techniques. Silk fibroin (SF) and hydroxyapatite (HA) have been used in bone tissue regeneration as biomaterials due to mechanical properties of SF and biocompatibility of HA. There has been growing interest in developing SF/HA composites to reduce bone defects. In this regard, several attempts have been made to study the biocompatibility and osteoconductive properties of this material. This article overviews the recent advance from last few decades in terms of the preparative methods and application of SF/HA in bone regeneration. Its first part is related to SF that presents the most common sources, preparation methods and comparison of SF with other biomaterials. The second part illustrates the importance of HA by providing information about its production and properties. The third part presents comparative studies of SF/HA composites with different concentrations of HA along with methods of preparation of composites and their applications.

Abstract
With the development of technology, tissue engineering (TE) has been widely applied in the medical field. In recent years, due to its accuracy and the demands of solid freeform fabrication in TE, three-dimensional printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), has been applied for biological scaffold fabrication in craniofacial and dental regeneration. In this review, we have compared several types of AM techniques and summarized their advantages and limitations. The range of printable materials used in craniofacial and dental tissue includes all the biomaterials. Thus, basic and clinical studies were discussed in this review to present the application of AM techniques in craniofacial and dental tissue and their advances during these years, which might provide information for further AM studies in craniofacial and dental TE.

Abstract
Recent developments in 3D printing (3DP) research have led to a variety of scaffold designs and techniques for osteochondral tissue engineering; however, the simultaneous incorporation of multiple types of gradients within the same construct remains a challenge. Herein, we describe the fabrication and mechanical characterization of porous poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and PCL-hydroxyapatite (HA) scaffolds with incorporated vertical porosity and ceramic content gradients via a multimaterial extrusion 3DP system. Scaffolds of 0 wt% HA (PCL), 15 wt% HA (HA15), or 30 wt% HA (HA30) were fabricated with uniform composition and porosity (using 0.2 mm, 0.5 mm, or 0.9 mm on-center fiber spacing), uniform composition and gradient porosity, and gradient composition (PCL-HA15-HA30) and porosity. Micro-CT imaging and porosity analysis demonstrated the ability to incorporate both vertical porosity and pore size gradients and a ceramic gradient, which collectively recapitulate gradients found in native osteochondral tissues. Uniaxial compression testing demonstrated an inverse relationship between porosity, ϕ, and compressive modulus, E, and yield stress, σy, for uniform porosity scaffolds, however, no differences were observed as a result of ceramic incorporation. All scaffolds demonstrated compressive moduli within the appropriate range for trabecular bone, with average moduli between 86 ± 14-220 ± 26 MPa. Uniform porosity and pore size scaffolds for all ceramic levels had compressive moduli between 205 ± 37-220 ± 26 MPa, 112 ± 13-118 ± 23 MPa, and 86 ± 14-97 ± 8 MPa respectively for porosities ranging between 14 ± 4-20 ± 6%, 36 ± 3-43 ± 4%, and 54 ± 2-57 ± 2%, with the moduli and yield stresses of low porosity scaffolds being significantly greater (p < 0.05) than those of all other groups. Single (porosity) gradient and dual (composition/porosity) gradient scaffolds demonstrated compressive properties similar (p > 0.05) to those of the highest porosity uniform scaffolds (porosity gradient scaffolds 98 ± 23-107 ± 6 MPa, and 102 ± 7 MPa for dual composition/porosity gradient scaffolds), indicating that these properties are more heavily influenced by the weakest section of the gradient. The compression data for uniform scaffolds were also readily modeled, yielding scaling laws of the form E ∼ (1 - ϕ)1.27 and σy ∼ (1 - ϕ)1.37, which demonstrated that the compressive properties evaluated in this study were well-aligned with expectations from previous literature and were readily modeled with good fidelity independent of polymer scaffold geometry and ceramic content. All uniform scaffolds were similarly deformed and recovered despite different porosities, while the large-pore sections of porosity gradient scaffolds were significantly more deformed than all other groups, indicating that porosity may not be an independent factor in determining strain recovery. Moving forward, the technique described here will serve as the template for more complex multimaterial constructs with bioactive cues that better match native tissue physiology and promote tissue regeneration. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This manuscript describes the fabrication and mechanical characterization of "dual" porosity/ceramic content gradient scaffolds produced via a multimaterial extrusion 3D printing system for osteochondral tissue engineering. Such scaffolds are designed to better address the simultaneous gradients in architecture and mineralization found in native osteochondral tissue. The results of this study demonstrate that this technique may serve as a template for future advances in 3D printing technology that may better address the inherent complexity in such heterogeneous tissues.

Abstract
Polylactic acid (PLA) filaments are very popular as a thermoplastic source used in the 3D printing field by the “Fused Deposition Modeling” method in the last decade. The PLA market is expected to reach 5.2 billion US dollars in 2020 for all of its industrial uses. On the other hand, 3D printing is an expanding technology that has a large economic potential in many industries where PLA is one of the main choices as the source polymer due to its ease of printing, environmentally friendly nature, glossiness and multicolor appearance properties. In this review, we first reported the chemical structure, production methods, general properties, and present market of the PLA. Then, the chemical modification possibilities of PLA and its use in 3D printers, present drawbacks, and the surface modification methods of PLA polymers in many different fields were discussed. Specifically, the 3D printing method where the PLA filaments are used in the extrusion-based 3D printing technologies is reviewed in this article. Many methods have been proposed for the permanent surface modifications of the PLA where covalent attachments were formed such as alkaline surface hydrolysis, atom transfer polymerization, photografting by UV light, plasma treatment, and chemical reactions after plasma treatment. Some of these methods can be applied for surface modifications of PLA objects obtained by 3D printing for better performance in biomedical uses and other fields. Some recent publications reporting the surface modification of 3D printed PLA objects were also discussed.

Abstract
Since large bone defects cannot be healed by the body itself, continuous effort is put into the development of 3D scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. One method to fabricate such scaffolds is selective laser sintering (SLS). However, there is a lack of solvent-free prepared microparticles suitable for SLS. Hence, the aim of this study was to develop a solvent-free polylactide/calcium carbonate composite powder with tailored material properties for SLS. Four composite powders with a composition of approximately 75 wt% polylactide (PLLA as well as PDLLA) and 25 wt% calcium carbonate (calcite) were prepared by a milling process based on GMP standards. Four different grades of polylactide were chosen to cover a broad inherent viscosity range of 1.0-3.6 dl/g. The composite material with the lowest inherent viscosity (1.0 dl/g) showed the best processability by SLS. This was caused by the small polymer particle diameter (50 μm) and the small zero-shear melt viscosity (400 Pa·s), which led to fast sintering. The SLS process parameters were developed to achieve low micro-porosity (approx. 2%) and low polymer degradation (no measurable decrease of the inherent viscosity). A biaxial bending strength of up to 75 MPa was achieved. Cell culture assays indicated good viability of MG-63 osteoblast-like cells on the SLS specimens. Finally, the manufacture of 3D scaffolds with interconnected pore structure was demonstrated. After proving the biocompatibility of the material, the developed scaffolds could have great potential to be used as patient-specific bone replacement implants.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) is a disruptive technology as it pushes the frontier of manufacturing towards a new design perspective, such as the ability to shape geometries that cannot be formed with any other traditional technique. AM has today shown successful applications in several fields such as the biomedical sector in which it provides a relatively fast and effective way to solve even complex medical cases. From this point of view, the purpose of this paper is to illustrate AM technologies currently used in the medical field and their benefits along with contemporary. The review highlights differences in processes, materials, and design of additive manufacturing techniques used in biomedical applications. Successful case studies are presented to emphasise the potentiality of AM processes. The presented review supports improvements in materials and design for future researches in biomedical surgeries using instruments and implants made by AM.

Abstract
A range of traditional and free-form fabrication technologies have been investigated and, in numerous occasions, commercialized for use in the field of regenerative tissue engineering (TE). The demand for technologies capable of treating bone defects inherently difficult to repair has been on the rise. This quest, accompanied by the advent of functionally tailored, biocompatible, and biodegradable materials, has garnered an enormous research interest in bone TE. As a result, different materials and fabrication methods have been investigated towards this end, leading to a deeper understanding of the geometrical, mechanical and biological requirements associated with bone scaffolds. As our understanding of the scaffold requirements expands, so do the capability requirements of the fabrication processes. The goal of this review is to provide a broad examination of existing scaffold fabrication processes and highlight future trends in their development. To appreciate the clinical requirements of bone scaffolds, a brief review of the biological process by which bone regenerates itself is presented first. This is followed by a summary and comparisons of commonly used implant techniques to highlight the advantages of TE-based approaches over traditional grafting methods. A detailed discussion on the clinical and mechanical requirements of bone scaffolds then follows. The remainder of the manuscript is dedicated to current scaffold fabrication methods, their unique capabilities and perceived shortcomings. The range of biomaterials employed in each fabrication method is summarized. Selected traditional and non-traditional fabrication methods are discussed with a highlight on their future potential from the authors' perspective. This study is motivated by the rapidly growing demand for effective scaffold fabrication processes capable of economically producing constructs with intricate and precisely controlled internal and external architectures. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The manuscript summarizes the current state of fabrication technologies and materials used for creating scaffolds in bone tissue engineering applications. A comprehensive analysis of different fabrication methods (traditional and free-form) were summarized in this review paper, with emphasis on recent developments in the field. The fabrication techniques suitable for creating scaffolds for tissue engineering was particularly targeted and their use in bone tissue engineering were articulated. Along with the fabrication techniques, we emphasized the choice of materials in these processes. Considering the limitations of each process, we highlighted the materials and the material properties critical in that particular process and provided a brief rational for the choice of the materials. The functional performance for bone tissue engineering are summarized for different fabrication processes and the choice of biomaterials. Finally, we provide a perspective on the future of the field, highlighting the knowledge gaps and promising avenues in pursuit of effective scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. This extensive review of the field will provide research community with a reference source for current approaches to scaffold preparation. We hope to encourage the researchers to generate next generation biomaterials to be used in these fabrication processes. By providing both advantages and disadvantage of each fabrication method in detail, new fabrication techniques might be devised that will overcome the limitations of the current approaches. These studies should facilitate the efforts of researchers interested in generating ideal scaffolds, and should have applications beyond the repair of bone tissue.

Abstract
The field of tissue engineering has produced new therapies for the repair of damaged tissues and organs, utilizing biomimetic scaffolds that mirror the mechanical and biological properties of host tissue. The emergence of three-dimensional printing (3DP) technologies has enabled the fabrication of highly complex scaffolds which offer a more accurate replication of native tissue properties and architecture than previously possible. Of strong interest to tissue engineers is the construction of multilayered scaffolds that target distinct regions of complex tissues. Musculoskeletal and dental tissues in particular, such as the osteochondral unit and periodontal complex, are composed of multiple interfacing tissue types, and thus benefit from the usage of multilayered scaffold fabrication. Traditional 3DP technologies such as extrusion printing and selective laser sintering have been used for the construction of scaffolds with gradient architectures and mixed material compositions. Additionally, emerging bioprinting strategies have been used for the direct printing and spatial patterning of cells and chemical factors, capturing the complex organization found in the body. To better replicate the varied and gradated properties of larger tissues, researchers have created scaffolds composed of multiple materials spanning natural polymers, synthetic polymers, and ceramics. By utilizing high precision 3DP techniques and judicious material selection, scaffolds can thus be designed to address the regeneration of previously challenging musculoskeletal, dental, and other heterogeneous target tissues. These multilayered 3DP strategies show great promise in the future of tissue engineering.

Abstract
Over the recent years, the advent of 3D bioprinting technology has marked a milestone in osteochondral tissue engineering (TE) research. Nowadays, the traditional used techniques for osteochondral regeneration remain to be inefficient since they cannot mimic the complexity of joint anatomy and tissue heterogeneity of articular cartilage. These limitations seem to be solved with the use of 3D bioprinting which can reproduce the anisotropic extracellular matrix (ECM) and heterogeneity of this tissue. In this chapter, we present the most commonly used 3D bioprinting approaches and then discuss the main criteria that biomaterials must meet to be used as suitable bioinks, in terms of mechanical and biological properties. Finally, we highlight some of the challenges that this technology must overcome related to osteochondral bioprinting before its clinical implementation.

Abstract
Advances in additive manufacturing technologies facilitate the fabrication of cellular materials that have tailored functional characteristics. The application of solid freeform fabrication techniques is especially exploited in designing scaffolds for tissue engineering. In this review, firstly, a classification of cellular materials from a geometric point of view is proposed; then, the main approaches on geometric modeling of cellular materials are discussed. Finally, an investigation on porous scaffolds fabricated by additive manufacturing technologies is pointed out. Perspectives in geometric modeling of scaffolds for tissue engineering are also proposed.

Abstract
Microspheres have long been used in drug delivery applications because of their controlled release capabilities. They have increasingly served as the fundamental building block for fabricating scaffolds for regenerative engineering because of their ability to provide a porous network, offer high-resolution control over spatial organization, and deliver growth factors/drugs and/or nanophase materials. Because they provide physicochemical gradients via spatiotemporal release of bioactive factors and nanophase ceramics, microspheres are a desirable tool for engineering complex tissues and biological interfaces. In this review we describe various methods for microsphere fabrication and sintering, and elucidate how these methods influence both micro- and macroscopic scaffold properties, with a special focus on the nature of sintering. Furthermore, we review key applications of microsphere-based scaffolds in regenerating various tissues. We hope to inspire researchers to join a growing community of investigators using microspheres as tissue engineering scaffolds so that their full potential in regenerative engineering may be realized.

Abstract
3D printing represents a valuable alternative to traditional processing methods, clearly demonstrated by the promising results obtained in the manufacture of various products, such as scaffolds for regenerative medicine, artificial tissues and organs, electronics, components for the automotive industry, art objects and so on. This revolutionary technique showed unique capabilities for fabricating complex structures, with precisely controlled physical characteristics, facile tunable mechanical properties, biological functionality and easily customizable architecture. In this paper, we provide an overview of the main 3D-printing technologies currently employed in the case of poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), two of the most important classes of thermoplastic aliphatic polyesters. Moreover, a short presentation of the main 3D-printing methods is briefly discussed. Both PLA and PHA, in the form of filaments or powder, proved to be suitable for the fabrication of artificial tissue or scaffolds for bone regeneration. The processability of PLA and PHB blends and composites fabricated through different 3D-printing techniques, their final characteristics and targeted applications in bioengineering are thoroughly reviewed.

Abstract
Bone defects arising from a variety of reasons cannot be treated effectively without bone tissue reconstruction. Autografts and allografts have been used in clinical application for some time, but they have disadvantages. With the inherent drawback in the precision and reproducibility of conventional scaffold fabrication techniques, the results of bone surgery may not be ideal. This is despite the introduction of bone tissue engineering which provides a powerful approach for bone repair. Rapid prototyping technologies have emerged as an alternative and have been widely used in bone tissue engineering, enhancing bone tissue regeneration in terms of mechanical strength, pore geometry, and bioactive factors, and overcoming some of the disadvantages of conventional technologies. This review focuses on the basic principles and characteristics of various fabrication technologies, such as stereolithography, selective laser sintering, and fused deposition modeling, and reviews the application of rapid prototyping techniques to scaffolds for bone tissue engineering. In the near future, the use of scaffolds for bone tissue engineering prepared by rapid prototyping technology might be an effective therapeutic strategy for bone defects.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) alias 3D printing translates computer-aided design (CAD) virtual 3D models into physical objects. By digital slicing of CAD, 3D scan, or tomography data, AM builds objects layer by layer without the need for molds or machining. AM enables decentralized fabrication of customized objects on demand by exploiting digital information storage and retrieval via the Internet. The ongoing transition from rapid prototyping to rapid manufacturing prompts new challenges for mechanical engineers and materials scientists alike. Because polymers are by far the most utilized class of materials for AM, this Review focuses on polymer processing and the development of polymers and advanced polymer systems specifically for AM. AM techniques covered include vat photopolymerization (stereolithography), powder bed fusion (SLS), material and binder jetting (inkjet and aerosol 3D printing), sheet lamination (LOM), extrusion (FDM, 3D dispensing, 3D fiber deposition, and 3D plotting), and 3D bioprinting. The range of polymers used in AM encompasses thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers, hydrogels, functional polymers, polymer blends, composites, and biological systems. Aspects of polymer design, additives, and processing parameters as they relate to enhancing build speed and improving accuracy, functionality, surface finish, stability, mechanical properties, and porosity are addressed. Selected applications demonstrate how polymer-based AM is being exploited in lightweight engineering, architecture, food processing, optics, energy technology, dentistry, drug delivery, and personalized medicine. Unparalleled by metals and ceramics, polymer-based AM plays a key role in the emerging AM of advanced multifunctional and multimaterial systems including living biological systems as well as life-like synthetic systems.

Abstract
A rapid prototyping technology, formed by three-dimensional (3-D) printing and then crosslinked by spraying Ca2+ solution, is developed to fabricate a sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel scaffold. The porosity, swelling ratio, and compression modulus of the scaffold are investigated. A friction mechanism is developed by studying the reproducible friction behavior. Our results show that the scaffold can have 3-D structure with a porosity of 52%. The degree of swelling of the SA hydrogel scaffold is 8.5, which is nearly the same as bulk SA hydrogel. SA hydrogel exhibits better compressive resilience than bulk hydrogel despite its lower compressive modulus compared to bulk hydrogel. The SA hydrogel scaffold exhibits a higher frictional force at low sliding velocity (10-6 to 10-3 m/s) compared to bulk SA hydrogel, and they are equal at high sliding velocity (10-2 to 1 m/s). For a small pressure (0.3 kPa), the SA hydrogel scaffold shows good friction reproducibility. In contrast, bulk SA hydrogel shows poor reproducibility with respect to friction behavior. The differences in friction behaviors between the SA hydrogel scaffold and bulk SA hydrogel are related to the structure of the scaffold, which can keep a stable hydrated lubrication layer.

Abstract
Recent advances in bioprinting technology have been used to precisely dispense cell-laden biomaterials for the construction of complex 3D functional living tissues or artificial organs. Organ printing and biofabrication provides great potential for the freeform fabrication of 3D living organs using cellular spheroids, biocomposite nanofibers, or bioinks as building blocks for regenerative therapy. Vascularization is often identified as a main technological barrier for building 3D organs in tissue engineering. 3D printing of living tissues starts with potential support of biomaterials to maintain structural integrity and degradation of certain time periods after printing of the scaffolds. Biofabrication is the production of complex living and nonliving biological products from raw materials such as cells, molecules, ECM, and biomaterials. Generally, two basic methods are used for the fabrication of scaffolds such as conventional/traditional fabrication processes and advance fabrication processes for engineering organs. A wide range of polymers and biomaterials are used for the fabrication of scaffolds in tissue engineering applications. 3D additive manufacturing is advancing day-by-day; however, there are various critical challenging factors used for fabricating 3D scaffolds. This review is aimed at understanding the various scaffold fabrication techniques, types of polymers and biomaterials used for the fabrication processes, various fields of applications, and different challenges faced in their fabrication of scaffolds in regenerative therapy.
