Continuous Production of Silver Nanoparticles and Process Control

Studies of surface plasmon resonance of silver nanoparticles reduced by aqueous extract of shortleaf spikesedge and their catalytic activity

This study describes the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using shortleaf spikesedge extract (SSE) to reduce AgNO₃. Visual observation, in addition to analyses of UV-vis, EDX, XRD, FTIR, and TEM was employed to monitor the formation of AgNPs. The effects of SSE concentration, AgNO₃ concentration, reaction time, pH, and temperature on the synthesis of AgNPs were studied based on the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band. From the TEM image, highly-scattered AgNPs of quasi-spherical shape with an average particle size of 17.64 nm, were observed. For the catalytic study, the reduction of methylene blue (MB) was evaluated using two systems. A detailed batch study of the removal efficiency (%RE) and kinetics was done at an ambient temperature, various MB initial concentrations, and varying reaction time. Employing the electron relay effect in System 2, the batch study clearly highlighted the significant role of AgNPs in boosting the catalytic activity for MB removal. At 30-100 mg/L initial concentrations, MB was reduced by 100% in a very short reaction time between 1.5 and 5.0 mins. The kinetic data best fitted the pseudo-first-order model with a maximum reaction rate of 2.5715 min^-1. These findings suggest the promising application of AgNPs in dye wastewater treatment.The SSE-driven AgNPs were prepared using unwanted dried biomass of shortleaf spikesedge extract (SSE) as a reducing as well as stabilizing agent. Employing the electron relay effect, the batch study clearly highlighted the significant role of SSE-driven AgNPs in boosting the catalytic activity for MB removal. At 30-100 mg/L initial concentrations, MB was reduced by 100% in a very short reaction time between 1.5 and 5.0 mins. In this sense, SSE-driven AgNPs acted as an electron relay point that behaves alternatively as acceptor and donor of electrons. The findings revealed the good catalytic performance of SSE-driven AgNPS, proving their viability for dye wastewater treatment.

Continuous citrate‐capped gold nanoparticle synthesis in a two‐phase flow reactor

A continuous manufacturing platform was developed for the synthesis of aqueous colloidal 10–20 nm gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) in a flow reactor using chloroauric acid, sodium citrate and citric acid at 95 oC and 2.3 bar(a) pressure. The use of a two-phase flow system – using heptane as the continuous phase – prevented fouling on the reactor walls, while improving the residence time distribution. Continuous syntheses for up to 2 h demonstrated its potential application for continuous manufacturing, while live quality control was established using online UV-Vis photospectrometry that monitored the particle size and process yield. The synthesis was stable and reproducible over time for gold precursor concentration above 0.23 mM (after mixing), resulting in average particle size between 12 and 15 nm. A hydrophobic membrane separator provided successful separation of the aqueous and organic phases and collection of colloidal Au NPs in flow. Process yield increased at higher inlet flow rates (from 70 % to almost 100 %), due to lower residence time of the colloidal solution in the separator resulting in less fouling in the PTFE membrane. This study addresses the challenges for the translation of the synthesis from batch to flow and provides tools for the development of a continuous manufacturing platform for gold nanoparticles.

Polymeric Materials with Antibacterial Activity: A Review

Infections caused by bacteria are one of the main causes of mortality in hospitals all over the world. Bacteria can grow on many different surfaces and when this occurs, and bacteria colonize a surface, biofilms are formed. In this context, one of the main concerns is biofilm formation on medical devices such as urinary catheters, cardiac valves, pacemakers or prothesis. The development of bacteria also occurs on materials used for food packaging, wearable electronics or the textile industry. In all these applications polymeric materials are usually present. Research and development of polymer-based antibacterial materials is crucial to avoid the proliferation of bacteria. In this paper, we present a review about polymeric materials with antibacterial materials. The main strategies to produce materials with antibacterial properties are presented, for instance, the incorporation of inorganic particles, micro or nanostructuration of the surfaces and antifouling strategies are considered. The antibacterial mechanism exerted in each case is discussed. Methods of materials preparation are examined, presenting the main advantages or disadvantages of each one based on their potential uses. Finally, a review of the main characterization techniques and methods used to study polymer based antibacterial materials is carried out, including the use of single force cell spectroscopy, contact angle measurements and surface roughness to evaluate the role of the physicochemical properties and the micro or nanostructure in antibacterial behavior of the materials.

Inorganic nanoparticle synthesis in flow reactors – applications and future directions

The use of flow technologies for obtaining nanoparticles can play an important role in the development of ecological and sustainable processes for obtaining inorganic nanomaterials, and the continuous methods are part of the Flow Chemistry trend.
