Visible-Light Induced Photodegradation of Methyl Orange via Palladium Nanoparticles Anchored to Chrome and Nitrogen Doped TiO2 Nanoparticles

Removal of organic dyes and free radical assay by encapsulating polyvinylpyrrolidone and Tinospora Cordifolia in dual (Co-Cu) doped TiO2 nanoparticles

Aquatic pollution refers to any water that has been used and discarded in different water bodies by industrial and commercial activities which contains a wide range of toxic substances and required treatment so that water can be safely reused for various purposes. In present paper, polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and plant Tinospora Cordifolia (T. Cordifolia) encapsulated dual doped cobalt-copper titanium dioxide nanoparticles (Co-Cu TNPs) has been synthesized via microwave-assisted method for the degradation aquatic pollutant dyes: Methyl Orange (MO) & Methylene Blue (MB). Using the encapsulated dual doped Co-Cu TNPs, free radical assays (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl: DPPH; Hydrogen peroxide: HP & Nitric oxide: NO) were also performed. Several physicochemical properties of encapsulated TNPs were examined using a variety of characterization techniques that helps in photocatalytic and antioxidant activity. The encapsulated TNPs exhibit tetragonal crystal lattice having average particles size between 25 and 38 nm with spherical shape morphology. The bandgap of encapsulated dual doped Co-Cu TNPs was found in the range of 3.25-3.29 eV. The binding of encapsulated dual doped Co-Cu TNPs were also calculated by using XPS which confirms the presence of dopants. The photocatalytic activity was performed with using control experiment and using encapsulated dual doped Co-Cu TNPs against MO and MB dyes. The results revealed that the degradation was observed up to 100% for the both MO and MB dyes. Also, antioxidant activity of encapsulated dual doped Co-Cu TNPs was observed against the DPPH, HO and NO assays.

Development of PSA@PS-TiO2 nanocomposite photocatalyst: structure, mechanism, and application using response surface designs and molecular modeling

Using periwinkle shell ash (PSA) and polystyrene (PS), a new-fangled PSA@PS-TiO₂ photocatalyst was fabricated. The morphological images of all the samples studied using a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM) showed a size distribution of 50-200 nm for all samples. The SEM-EDX showed that the membrane substrate of PS was well dispersed, confirming the presence of anatase/rutile phases of TiO₂, and Ti and O₂ were the major composites. Given the very rough surface morphology (atomic force microscopy (AFM)) due to PSA, the main crystal phases (XRD) of TiO₂ (rutile and anatase), low bandgap (UVDRS), and beneficial functional groups (FTIR-ATR), the 2.5 wt.% of PSA@PS-TiO₂ exhibited better photocatalytic efficiency for methyl orange degradation. The photocatalyst, pH, and initial concentration were investigated and the PSA@PS-TiO₂ was reused for five cycles with the same efficiency. Regression modeling predicted 98% efficiency and computational modeling showed a nucleophilic initial attack initiated by a nitro group. Therefore, PSA@PS-TiO₂ nanocomposite is an industrially promising photocatalyst for treating azo dyes, particularly, methyl orange from an aqueous solution.

TiO2 Doped with Noble Metals as an Efficient Solution for the Photodegradation of Hazardous Organic Water Pollutants at Ambient Conditions

This work highlights new insights into the performance of TiO2 doped with noble metal catalysts for the photocatalytic degradation of organic water pollutants. Different samples of titanium dioxide doped with noble metals (Au and Pd) were successfully synthesized via incipient wet impregnation (IWI) and ultrasound-assisted impregnation (US) methods. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and UV-Vis reflectance spectroscopy were used for the characterization of the obtained materials. Their photocatalytic efficiency was investigated in aqueous suspension thorough a series of laboratory tests performed under ultraviolet (UV-A) irradiation conditions using 2,4 dinitrophenol (2,4 DNP) as a target molecule. The results clearly show that the method used for the catalyst synthesis affects its photocatalytic activity. It was found that the samples prepared by the IWI method exhibited high photocatalytic activity, and the removal rate obtained with TiO2-Pd/IWI was higher than that found for TiO2-Au/IWI. Furthermore, for the best catalyst, some extra photocatalytic experiments were conducted with rhodamine 6G (R6G), a highly stable molecule with a very different chemical structure to 2,4 DNP, in order to check the reactivity of this material. Moreover, the recycling experiments carried out with TiO2-Pd/IWI clearly demonstrated the high photocatalytic stability of this material for the degradation of 2,4 DNP. All of the collected data confirmed the interesting photocatalytic potential of the selected catalyst in the elimination of organic pollutants with no obvious change in its reactivity after four reaction cycles, which is very promising for promoting future applications in water depollution.
