Green Synthesis of Silver Oxide Nanostructures and Investigation of Their Synergistic Effect with Moxifloxacin Against Selected Microorganisms

Rocephin-graphene oxide-silver nanocomposites: A versatile platform for biomedical applications

For many years, the synthesis of graphene oxide (GO) had involved exfoliating graphite flakes, and the methods applied were expensive and time-consuming. Thus, an attempt had been made to create an inventive, less expensive method for the synthesis of GO using unrefined, raw carbon-containing material. Modified Hummer's method was used to prepare GO from banana peel. In addition, the metallic silver nanocomposite was also synthesized along with laoding of drug Rocephin where they interact with each other through electrostatic hydrogen bond interaction. The degree of crystallinity and the crystallite size were through x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and the crystallite size of AgNPs was found to be 40.40 nm. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis shows that the morphology of the GO gradually changes with the addition of AgNPs and Rocephin. A blue shift was seen in the absorbance maxima of the raw carbon upon the conjugation of Rocephin in UV analysis. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy were used to determine the chemical composition of the samples. Furthermore, a broad biological screening of the synthesized samples had been carried out following the total reducing power (TRP), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), antibacterial, antifungal, MTT (Cytotoxicity of biologically synthesized silver nanoparticles in MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells) cell viability, brine shrimp lethality, and hemolytic protocols. Significant results were obtained, and the Rocephin-GO-AgNPs had depicted promising activity as compared with their counterparts. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: The GO was prepared from the raw carbon extracted from banana peels and was used as a substrate for the synthesis Graphene oxide silver nanoparticles (GO-AgNPs) and Rocephin-loaded graphene oxide silver nanoparticles (Rocephin-GO-AgNPs) The structural and compositional analysis of the nanomaterial was carried out, and they were screened for several biomedical applications. The Rocephin-GO-AgNPs exhibit the highest activity as compared with their counterparts.

Bioengineered synthesis of phytochemical-adorned green silver oxide (Ag2O) nanoparticles via Mentha pulegium and Ficus carica extracts with high antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal activities

Silver oxide nanoparticles have various biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. However, conventional nanofabrication of Ag₂O is associated with the use of toxic chemicals and organic solvents. To circumvent this hurdle, herein silver oxide quantum dots (Ag₂O-QDs) were synthesized quickly (3 min) via the use of ultrasonic irradiation and plant-extract. Additionally, due to ultrasonic irradiation's effect on cell-wall destruction and augmentation of extraction efficiency, ultrasonic was also used in the preparation of Mentha pulegium and Ficus carica extracts (10 min, r.t) as natural eco-friendly reducing/capping agents. The UV-Vis result indicated a broad absorption peak at 400-500 nm. TEM/SEM analysis showed that ultrasound introduced a uniform spherical particle and significantly reduced particle size compared to the conventional heating method (∼ 9 nm vs. ∼ 100 nm). Silver and oxygen elements were found in the bio-synthesized Ag₂O by EDS. The FTIR and phenol/flavonoid tests revealed the presence of phenol and flavonoid associated with the nanoparticles. Moreover, nanoparticles exhibited antioxidant/antibacterial/antifungal activities. The MIC and MBC results showed the Ag₂O QDs synthesized with M. pulegium extract have the highest antibacterial activity against E. coli (MBC = MIC:15.6 ppm), which were significantly different from uncoated nanoparticles (MBC = MIC:500 ppm). The data reflects the role of phyto-synthesized Ag₂O-QDs using ultrasonic-irradiation to develop versatile and green biomedical products.

A Novel Shift in the Absorbance Maxima of Methyl Orange with Calcination Temperature of Green Tin Dioxide Nanoparticle-Induced Photocatalytic Activity

Background: The photocatalytic degradation of toxic organic compounds has received great attention for the past several years. Dyes, such as methyl orange (MO), are one of the major pollutants which create environmental hazards in the hydrosphere, living organisms and human beings. During photocatalytic degradation, NPs are activated in the presence of UV–Vis radiation which in turn creates a redox environment in the system and behaves as a sensitizer for light-induced redox mechanisms. Tin oxide (SnO2) is one of the prominent, but less investigated, nanomaterials compared to titanium oxide (TiO2) and Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs). Methods: Herein, Buxus wallichiana (B. wallichiana) leaf extract was utilized as a reducing and capping agent for the biosynthesis of SnO2 NPs. The effects of the calcination temperature on their photocatalytic, structure and surface properties were then examined. The degree of crystallinity and the crystallite size were determined through X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The pore size and surface area were calculated by Burnett–Emmitt–Teller (BET) and Barrett–Joyner–Halenda (BJH) methods based on nitrogen desorption data. Morphological changes were assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The optical behavior was analyzed through UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) data and the band gap subsequently calculated. The photocatalytic efficiency of SnO2 NPs was evaluated by double beam UV–Vis spectrophotometry under the influence of initial MO concentration, catalyst dose and pH of MO solution. The surface functional moieties were identified using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. All the calcined SnO2 NPs were used as photocatalysts for the mineralization of MO in aqueous media. Results: The degree of crystallinity and the crystallite size increased with the calcination temperature. The transmittance edge obtained for all the calcined SnO2 NPs shows a maximum absorbance in the visible range (λ-max = 464 nm). Moving toward higher wavelengths, a sudden intense red shift (from 464 nm to 500 nm), attributed to the incorporation of a hydroxyl radical at the ortho-position in the benzene ring associated with the dimethylamine group of MO, was observed in the absorbance of the samples calcined up to 300 °C. The percentage degradation of MO was found to decrease with increasing calcination temperatures. The optimal photocatalytic activity toward MO (15 ppm) in a solution of pH = 6 was obtained with 15 mg SnO2 NPs calcined at 100 °C. Conclusions: UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy demonstrates that the absorption spectra of MO are strongly modified by the calcination temperature. This work opens new avenues for the use of SnO2 NPs as photocatalysts against the degradation of industrial effluents enriched with different dyes.

Green Synthesis of Silver Oxide Nanoparticles for Photocatalytic Environmental Remediation and Biomedical Applications

Among the most notable nanotechnology applications is its employment in environmental remediation and biomedical applications. Nonetheless, there is a need for cleaner and sustainable methods in preparing nanomaterials that use cheaper, more environment-friendly precursors than the conventional synthesis process. The green chemistry approach for the preparation of nanoparticles is becoming more attractive as it uses non-toxic chemicals and reagents. It also offers cost-effective synthesis process as it uses readily available plant sources and microbe as redox mediators in converting metallic cations to metal or metal oxide nanoparticles. The extracts of these plants and microbe sources contain phytochemicals and metabolites in variable quantities, which serve as redox mediators and capping agents that stabilize the biosynthesized nanoparticles. The present article reviews the recent studies on the fabrication of silver oxide nanoparticles (Ag2O-NPs) via plant-mediated and microbe-mediated green synthesis, giving a concise discussion on the green preparation of Ag2O-NPs employing extracts of different plants and microbial sources. The performances of the biosynthesized Ag2O-NPs are also reviewed, highlighting their potential use in photocatalysis and biomedical applications.

Bio-Synthesized Tin Oxide Nanoparticles: Structural, Optical, and Biological Studies

This research was planned to synthesize a biological potent nanomaterials via an eco-friendly process to combat the diseases causing bacteria and the free radicals generated inside the body. For this purpose, a green synthesis process was employed to prepare SnO2 nanoparticles by utilizing leaf extract of Populus ciliate, and they were characterized via different physico-chemical techniques. The crystallite size of SnO2 nanoparticles was found to be 58.5 nm. The calculated band gap energy of SnO2 nanoparticles was 3.36 eV. The SnO2 nanoparticles showed 38, 49, 57, and 72% antioxidant activity at concentrations of 100, 200, 300, and 400 L with 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonicacid) (ABTS) assays. The antibacterial effects of prepared SnO2 nanoparticles were studied using the agar well diffusion method against Gram-positive bacteria (S. pyogene and S. aureus) and Gram-negative bacteria (K. pneumoniae and E. coli). Both the antioxidant activity and antibacterial activity were seen to increase with increasing the concentration of the nanoparticles.

Bergenia ciliate-Mediated Mixed-Phase Synthesis and Characterization of Silver-Copper Oxide Nanocomposite for Environmental and Biological Applications

Bergenia ciliate (B. ciliate) leaf extract was used as a reducing and stabilizing agent for the synthesis of silver-copper oxide nanocomposite (Ag-CuO NC). Scanning and transmission electron microscopies (SEM and TEM) were used to examine the structural morphology, and the average particle size was determined to be 47.65 nm. The phase confirmation and crystalline structure were examined through the X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, where cubic and monoclinic geometries were assigned to Ag and CuO. The energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and ultra-violet and visible (UV-Visible) spectroscopies were operated to analyse the elemental composition, functional groups and light absorption phenomena of the Ag-CuO NC. Under the full light spectrum, the photodegradation of Rhodamine 6G was recorded, and 99.42 percent of the dye degraded in 80 min. The Agar well diffusion method was followed to perform antibacterial activity against selected pathogens, and the activity was found to increase with increasing concentration of Ag-CuO NC. The ABTS free radical scavenging activity suggests that the activity of Ag-CuO NC is higher than ascorbic acid.

Physicochemical, Photocatalytic, Antibacterial, and Antioxidant Screening of Bergenia Ciliata Mediated Nickel Oxide Nanoparticles

This study was planned to synthesize a multifunctional nanomaterial that can effectively encounter the organic pollutants, multidrug-resistant bacteria and reactive free radicals. The Bergenia ciliate (B. ciliate) leaves extract was used as a reducing and capping agent for the synthesis of nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO NP). The physicochemical properties were studied through X-ray diffractometre (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-visible and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopies. The highly crystalline monoclinic NiO NPs were synthesized with crystallite size of 27.45 nm. The average particle size derived from TEM micrograph was 49.35 nm whereas the calculated band gap for NiO NPs was 3.78 eV. The photocatalytic study shows that 92.17% of the rhodamine 6G (Rh-6G) was efficiently degraded in the presence of NiO NPs. The agar well diffusion method was applied to examine the antibacterial activity of NiO NPs and the activity was found higher against Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) as compared to Gram-positive bacteria (GPB). The ABTS free radical scavenging activity was also performed, however, the activity was found less than the standard.

Structural and biological investigation of biogenically synthesized titanium dioxide nanoparticles: Calcination and characterization

The antimicrobial drug resistance is increasing with the passage of time due to wide and improper use of broad spectrum drugs and the demand of the new drug increases day by day. The present study was planned to encounter this problem by synthesizing titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO₂ NPs) by an eco-friendly route using Cannabis sativa leaves extract. The synthesized TiO₂ NPs were calcined at 100, 300, 600, and 900°C in a muffle furnace. The crystallographic parameters were studied by X-ray diffraction and the phase transition occurred above 600°C. The surface morphology of the synthesized samples was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the particle size was measured through the ImageJ software. The elemental composition and purity of all the samples were studied by performing energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). All the synthesized TiO₂ NPs were tested for their antimicrobial effect against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria using the agar well diffusion method. The activity was found higher against Gram-negative bacteria and compared to Gram-positive bacteria.
