Parental Alcohol Use and the Alcohol Misuse of their Offspring in a Finnish Birth Cohort: Investigation of Developmental Timing

Gender differences in alcohol drinking among adolescents: a school-based survey in China

BACKGROUND

Alcohol drinking among adolescents is associated with their health development. However, the prevalence of alcohol drinking among adolescents in Southwestern China remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of alcohol drinking, with a particular focus on gender differences, among primary and middle school students in Zigong, a city in Southwestern China. Additionally, we examined the association between alcohol consumption and demographic and family factors.

METHODS

A school-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in a city in Southwestern China, encompassing a total of 89 360 students from 132 different ordinary schools, including both primary and middle schools. Participants were recruited through cluster sampling. The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test Consumption was employed to assess alcohol consumption. Gender differences in the prevalence of alcohol drinkers across various schools and grades were analysed. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to investigate factors associated with hazardous drinking.

RESULTS

Out of the 89 360 participants, 19.0% reported alcohol drinking, with 2.1% classified as hazardous drinkers. There was a higher prevalence of alcohol drinking among boys compared with girls, as well as hazardous drinking. There were significant gender disparities in alcohol drinking observed across various schools and grade levels. A notable divergence between boys and girls was observed starting from grade 10, with a rising prevalence of hazardous drinking among boys and a decline among girls. Additionally, older age, male gender and being left-behind children were identified as risk factors for hazardous drinking, while belonging to a nuclear family and having parents who do not drink were protective factors against hazardous drinking.

CONCLUSIONS

Alcohol consumption is prevalent among Chinese adolescents, with some even classified as hazardous drinkers. These findings may offer valuable insights for policymakers and caregivers, guiding them in formulating appropriate interventions and support strategies.

Paternal and Maternal Problem Drinking and Lifetime Problem Drinking of Their Adult Children

Parents' alcohol use is associated with alcohol use of their adolescent offspring, but does this association extend to the adulthood of the offspring? We examined associations of paternal and maternal problem drinking with lifetime problem drinking of their adult offspring prospectively assessed in a population-based Finnish twin-family cohort (FinnTwin16). Problem drinking (Malmö-modified Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test) was self-reported separately by mothers and fathers when their children were 16. The children reported on an extended lifetime version of the same measure during their mid-twenties (21-28 years) and mid-thirties (31-37 years). 1235 sons and 1461 daughters in mid-twenties and 991 sons and 1278 daughters in mid-thirties had complete data. Correlations between fathers' and their adult children's problem drinking ranged from .12 to .18. For mothers and their adult children, these correlations ranged from .09 to .14. In multivariate models, adjustment for potential confounders had little effect on the observed associations. In this study, parental problem drinking was modestly associated with lifetime problem drinking of their adult children. This association could be detected even when the children had reached the fourth decade of life.

Maternal and Paternal Effects on Hyperuricemia: A Cross-Sectional Study from the 7th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

OBJECTIVE

As heritability of hyperuricemia remains largely unexplained, we analyzed the association between parental and offspring hyperuricemia at the phenotype level.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study included data on 2373 offspring and both-parent pairs from the 7th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Logistic regression and generalized estimating equation analysis were used to evaluate the association between offspring and parental hyperuricemia adjusting for metabolic risk factors and alcohol intake.

RESULTS

Both maternal and paternal hyperuricemia were associated with offspring hyperuricemia among teenagers, but from age of 20 years, a strong association was observed between offspring and paternal, rather than, maternal hyperuricemia, and this could not be explained by metabolic risk factors such as obesity. However, there was positive interaction between offspring alcohol intake and parental hyperuricemia, and there was a stronger association between terciles of offspring alcohol intake and hyperuricemia in the presence of parental hyperuricemia: T1 (reference), T2 OR 1.1 (0.3-4.6), and T3 OR 3.3 (1.4-7.9) (P for trend 0.017) vs. T1 (reference), T2 OR 0.7 (0.3-1.9), and T3 OR 1.1 (0.6-2.2) (P for trend 0.974).

CONCLUSION

These results suggest gene-environment interaction, especially with respect to alcohol intake for hyperuricemia in Korean adults.

Lifestyle factors in the prevention of COVID-19

Confinement to the home and psychological distress due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may lead to harmful health behaviors, such as overeating, sedentary behavior with reduced physical activity, elevated alcohol and tobacco use and increased screen time causing impaired sleep. All of these behaviors are associated with non-communicable diseases and can interfere with immunity. While no foods, single nutrients or dietary supplements are capable of preventing infection with COVID-19, a balanced diet containing sufficient amounts of macronutrients and diverse micronutrients is a prerequisite of an optimally functioning immune system. High-energy "Western" diets and obesity are major risk factors for a more severe course of COVID-19. Alcohol use and tobacco also have detrimental effects on the immune system. Therefore, population-wide body weight control, reduction of smoking rates and limitation of alcohol consumption are important preventive measures. Furthermore, sufficient restorative sleep is needed for adequate immune functioning. Appropriate lifestyle changes in regard to nutrition, exercise, sleep, smoking and alcohol intake may help shift the population distribution of infection risk and aid in preventing severe COVID-19 disease. Large-scale surveys should explore the effects of lifestyle changes, and the provision of reliable lifestyle information and effective interventions to individuals and communities during the pandemic is a pressing need.
