Abstract
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to investigate the influence of curvature and backbone rigidity of an oxygenated surface, here graphene oxide (GO), on its adsorption of uranyl in collaboration with humic acid (HA). The planar curvature of GO was found to be beneficial in impeding the folding of HA. This, together with its rigidity that helps stabilize the extended conformation of HA, offered rich binding sites to interact with uranyl with only marginal loss of binding strength. According to our simulations, the interaction between uranyl and GO was mainly driven by electrostatic interactions. The presence of HA not only provided multiple sites to compete/cooperate with GO for adsorption of free uranyl but also interacted with GO acting as a "bridge" to connect uranyl and GO. The potential of mean force (PMF) profiles implied that HA significantly enhanced the interaction strength between uranyl and GO and stabilized the uranyl-GO complex. Meanwhile, GO could reduce the diffusion coefficients of uranyl and HA and retard their migrations in aqueous solution. This work provides theoretical hints on the GO-based remediation strategies for the sites contaminated by uranium or other heavy metal ions and oxygenated organic pollutants.

Abstract
Sorption of U(VI) onto TiO2 as functions of pH, ionic strength, contact time, soil humic acid (SHA), solid-to-liquid ratio and temperature was studied under ambient conditions using batch and spectroscopic approaches. The sorption of U(VI) on TiO2 was significantly dependent on pH and ionic strength. The presence of SHA slightly enhanced the sorption of U(VI) on TiO2 below pH4.0, while it inhibited U(VI) sorption in the higher pH range. U(VI) sorption on TiO2 was favored at high temperatures, and the sorption process was estimated to be endothermic and spontaneous. Reduction of U(VI) to lower valent species was confirmed by X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy analysis. It is very interesting to find that U(VI) sorption on TiO2 was promoted in solutions with higher back-ground electrolyte concentrations. In the presence of U(VI), higher back-ground electrolyte made more TiO2 particles aggregate through (001) facets, leading more (101) facets to be exposed. Therefore, the reduction of U(VI) was enhanced by the exposed (101) facets and more U(VI) removal was observed.

Abstract
Pantoea sp. TW18 isolated from radionuclide-contaminated soils was used for the bioremediation of radionuclides pollution. Accumulation mechanism of U(VI) on Pantoea sp. TW18 was investigated by batch experiments and characterization techniques. The batch experiments revealed that Pantoea sp. TW18 rapidly reached accumulation equilibrium at approximately 4 h with a high accumulation capacity (79.87 mg g-1 at pH 4.1 and T = 310 K) for U(VI). The accumulation data of U(VI) onto Pantoea sp. TW18 can be satisfactorily fitted by pseudo-second-order model. The accumulation of U(VI) on Pantoea sp. TW18 was affected by pH levels, not independent of ionic strength. Analysis of the FT-IR and XPS spectra demonstrated that accumulated U(VI) ions were primarily bound to nitrogen- and oxygen-containing functional groups (i.e., carboxyl, amide and phosphoryl groups) on the Pantoea sp. TW18 surface. This study showed that Pantoea sp. TW18 can be considered as a promising sorbent for remediation of radionuclides in environmental cleanup.

Abstract
Biochar has been touted as a promising sorbent for the removal of inorganic contaminants, such as uranium (U), from water. However, the molecular-scale mechanisms of aqueous U(VI) species adsorption to biochar remain poorly understood. In this study, two approaches, grounded in equilibrium thermodynamics, were employed to investigate the U(VI) adsorption mechanisms: (1) batch U(VI) adsorption experiments coupled to surface complexation modeling (SCM) and (2) isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), supported by synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) analyses. The biochars tested have considerable proton buffering capacity and most strongly adsorb U(VI) between approximately pH 4 and 6. FT-IR and XPS studies, along with XAS analyses, show that U(VI) adsorption occurs primarily at the proton-active carboxyl (-COOH) and phenolic hydroxyl (-OH) functional groups on the biochar surface. The SCM approach is able to predict U(VI) adsorption behavior across a wide range of pH and at varying initial U(VI) and biochar concentrations, and U adsorption is strongly influenced by aqueous U(VI) speciation. Supporting ITC measurements indicate that the calculated enthalpies of protonation reactions of the studied biochar, as well as the adsorption of U(VI), are consistent with anionic oxygen ligands and are indicative of both inner- and outer-sphere complexation. Our results provide new insights into the modes of U(VI) adsorption by biochar and more generally improve our understanding of its potential to remove radionuclides from contaminated waters.

Abstract
The paper presents the use of Pyrolox™ containing manganese nano oxides used for the removal of Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) as well as U(VI) ions. Their concentrations were analyzed using the atomic absorption spectrometer SpectrAA 240 FS (Varian) as well as UV-vis method. For this purpose the static kinetic and equilibrium studies were carried out using the batch technique. The effect of solution pH, shaking time, initial metal ion concentrations, sorbent dosage, and temperature was investigated. The equilibrium data were analyzed using the sorption isotherm models proposed by Freundlich, Langmuir-Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich. The kinetic results showed that the pseudo second order kinetic model was found to correlate the experimental data well. The results indicate that adsorption of Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) as well as U(VI) ions is strongly dependent on pH. The value of pH 4-7 was optimal adsorption. The time to reach the equilibrium was found to be 24 h, and after this time, the sorption percentage reached about 70%. Kinetics of Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), and U(VI) adsorption on the adsorbent can be described by the pseudo second order rate equation. Nitrogen adsorption/desorption, infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements for adsorbent characterization were performed. Characteristic points of the double layer determined for the studied Pyrolox™ sample in 0.001 mol/dm3 NaCl solution are pHPZC = 4 and pHIEP < 2.

Abstract
A lignocellulose/montmorillonite (LMT) nanocomposite was prepared as a reusable adsorbent for cobalt(II) ions, and characterized by nitrogen (N₂) adsorption/desorption isotherm, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). LMT exhibited efficient adsorption of cobalt ions (Co(II)), and the adsorbed Co(II) was readily desorbed by nitric acid (HNO₃). All parameters affecting the adsorption and/or desorption of Co(II), including initial Co(II) concentration, pH value, temperature, HNO₃ concentration, and time, were optimized. The kinetic data analysis showed that the adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and fit well into the Langmuir isotherm equation. Notably, the nanocomposite can be used four times without significantly losing adsorbent capability. The Energy-Dispersive X-ray (EDX) and FTIR spectra analysis also revealed that the adsorption mechanism may be mainly a chemical adsorption dominated process.

Abstract
Surface complexation models use experimental adsorption measurements to calculate stability constants that quantify the thermodynamic stability of adsorbed species. However, these constants are often poorly constrained due to nearly complete removal of the solute from solution and/or because the tested adsorbate:adsorbent ratios are not varied sufficiently. Using data sets that quantify the adsorption of U(VI) to multilayered graphene oxide (MLGO), we tested whether three different U(VI):MLGO ratios (3 ppm U; 20-210 mg L-1 MLGO) affect the ability of nonelectrostatic and diffuse layer models to predict U(VI) adsorption behaviors across a range of ionic strength (1-100 mM) and pH (2-9.5) conditions. Model formulations assumed interactions between discrete MLGO surfaces sites and the most abundant aqueous U(VI) complex(es) within a given pH range. We determined that the observed extents of U(VI) binding require adsorption of more than one U(VI) species (UO22+ and uranyl hydroxide(s) and/or carbonate(s)) and calculated the respective stability constants for the important U(VI)-MLGO surface complexes. The results also unequivocally illustrated that models using adsorption data from treatments with higher U(VI):MLGO ratios provide better fits throughout the tested range of experimental conditions, meaning that the U(VI)-MLGO stability constants calculated herein can be confidently applied to a range of natural or engineered systems.

Abstract
Abstract
β-Zeolite was synthesized and modified with TiO2. The synthesized materials were characterized and used for removal of U(VI) from aqueous solutions. The influences of pH, contact time and temperature on U(VI) adsorption onto modified β-zeolite by TiO2 were studied by batch technique, and XPS was employed to analysed the experimental data. The dynamic process showed that the adsorption of U(VI) onto TiO2/β-zeolite matched the pseudo-second-order kinetics model, and the adsorption of U(VI) were significantly dependent on pH values. Through simulating the adsorption isotherms by Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubini–Radushkevich (D–R) models, it could be seen, respectively that the adsorption patterns of U(VI) onto TiO2/β-zeolite were mainly controlled by surface complexation, and the adsorption processes were endothermic and spontaneous. The modification of β-zeolite by TiO2 it shows a novel material for the removing of U(VI) from water environment for industrialized application.

Abstract
In this report, the β-CD(AN-co-AA) hydrogel was used to remove the thorium(IV) [Th(IV)] from the water system, and the new adsorbent was characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The influences of contact time, pH value, ionic strength, solid-liquid ratio, initial Th(IV) concentration, and temperature on Th(IV) adsorption onto the functional hydrogel were researched. The results showed that the experimental data followed the Langmuir isotherm and the maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) for Th(IV) was 692 mg/g at pH 2.95, which approached the calculated (qe) 682 mg/g. The desorption capacity of Th(IV) in different HNO3 concentrations ranging from 0.005 to 0.5 M was also studied, and the percentage of the maximum desorption was 86.85% in the condition of 0.09 M HNO3. The selectivity of β-CD(AN-co-AA) hydrogel was also be studied, the results indicated that this material retained the good adsorption capacity to Th(IV) even when the Ca2+, Mg2+, or Pb2+ existed in the system. The findings indicate that β-CD(AN-co-AA) can be used as a new candidate for the enrichment and separation of Th(IV), or its analogue actinides, from large-volume solution in practical application.

Abstract
In this study, a novel magnetic polyacrylamide (PAM) coagulant based on the core of magnetite (Fe3O4), with oleic acid serving as modifier and acrylamide as monomer, was synthesized to remove suspended solids in kaolin-suspended water. The composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermo gravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The results demonstrated that 82.8% of turbidity removal rate was obtained in 5 min of static settling in simulated kaolin-suspended water. This proved to be superior to that of PAM and poly aluminum chloride. Also confirmed in this study was the fact that zeta potential was significantly correlated with turbidity removal.

Abstract
Uranium (U) can enter aquatic environments from natural and anthropogenic processes, accumulating in sediments to concentrations that could, if bioavailable, adversely affect benthic organisms. To better predict the sorption and mobility of U in aquatic ecosystems, we investigated the sediment-solution partition coefficients (Kd) of U for nine uncontaminated freshwater sediments with a wide range of physicochemical characteristics over an environmentally relevant pH range. Test solutions were reconstituted to mimic water quality conditions and U(VI) concentrations (0.023-2.3 mg U/L) found downstream of Canadian U mines. Adsorption of U(VI) to each sediment was greatest at pH 6 and 7, and significantly reduced at pH 8. There were significant differences in pH-dependent sorption among sediments with different physicochemical properties, with sorption increasing up until thresholds of 12% total organic carbon, 37% fine fraction (≤50 μm), and 29 g/kg of iron content. The Kd values for U(VI) were predicted using the Windermere Humic Aqueous Model (WHAM) using total U(VI) concentrations, and water and sediment physicochemical parameters. Predicted Kd-U values were generally within a factor of three of the observed values. These results improve the understanding and assessment of U sorption to field sediment, and quantify the relationship with sediment properties that may influence the bioavailability and ecological risk of U-contaminated sediments.

Abstract
Pore network models have been applied widely for simulating a variety of different physical and chemical processes, including phase exchange, non-Newtonian displacement, non-Darcy flow, reactive transport and thermodynamically consistent oil layers. The realism of such modelling, i.e. the credibility of their predictions, depends to a large extent on the quality of the correspondence between the pore space of a given medium and the pore network constructed as its representation. The main experimental techniques for pore space characterisation, including direct imaging, mercury intrusion porosimetry and gas adsorption, are firstly summarised. A review of the main pore network construction techniques is then presented. Particular focus is given on how such constructions are adapted to the data from experimentally characterised pore systems. Current applications of pore network models are considered, with special emphasis on the effects of adsorption, dissolution and precipitation, as well as biomass growth, on transport coefficients. Pore network models are found to be a valuable tool for understanding and predicting meso-scale phenomena, linking single pore processes, where other techniques are more accurate, and the homogenised continuum porous media, used by engineering community.

Abstract
The effects of pH, counter ions and temperature on the adsorption of U(VI) on Beishan granite (BsG) were investigated in the presence and absence of fulvic acid (FA) and humic acid (HA). The adsorption edge of U(VI) on BsG suggested that U(VI) adsorption was mainly controlled by ion exchange and outer-sphere complexation at low pH, whereas inner-sphere complex was the dominant adsorption species in the pH range of 4.0-9.0. Above pH 9.0, Na2U2O7 might play an important role in the rise of U(VI) adsorption again. Counter ions such as Cl(-), SO4(2-) and PO4(3-) can provoke U(VI) adsorption on BsG to some extent, which was directly correlated to the complexing ability of U(VI)-ligand. More noticeably, the large enhancement of U(VI) adsorption in the presence of phosphate can be attributed to the ternary complex formation (BsG-PO4-UO2), precipitation ((UO2)3(PO4)2(s)) and secondary phase (Na-autunite). Both FA and HA can slightly increase U(VI) adsorption at low pH, whereas they strongly inhibited U(VI) adsorption at high pH range. Artificial synthesized granite (AsG) prepared in the laboratory is impossible to use as an analogue of natural granite because of the large difference in the adsorption and surface properties.

Abstract
The adsorption of Th(IV) onto the surface of oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (oMWCNTs) in the absence and presence of hydroxylated fullerene (C60(OH)n) and carboxylated fullerene (C60(C(COOH)2)n) has been investigated. C60(OH)n, C60(C(COOH)2)n and oMWCNTs have been chosen as model phases because of their representative in carbon nano-materials family. Adsorption experiments were performed by batch procedure as a function of contact time, pH, ionic strength, and temperature. The results demonstrated that the adsorption of Th(IV) was rapidly reached equilibrium and the kinetic process could be described by a pseudo-second-order rate model very well. Th(IV) adsorption on oMWCNTs was dependent on pH but independent on ionic strength. Adsorption isotherms were correlated better with the Langmuir model than with the Freundlich model. The thermodynamic parameters calculated from temperature-dependent adsorption isotherms suggested that Th(IV) adsorption on oMWCNTs was spontaneous and endothermic. Compared with the adsorption of Th(IV) on the same oMWCNTs free of C60(OH)n or C60(C(COOH)2)n, the study of a ternary system showed the inhibition effect of C60(OH)n at high concentration on the adsorption of Th(IV) in a pH range from neutral to slightly alkaline; whereas the promotion effect of C60(C(COOH)2)n, even at its low concentration, on Th(IV) adsorption was observed in acid medium.
