High levels of heavy metals in Western Arabian Gulf mangrove soils

A comparative study on cadmium tolerance and applicability of two Solanum lycopersicum L. cultivars

Solanum lycopersicum L. can be classified into low Cd-accumulating and high Cd-accumulating types based on their accumulation characteristics of cadmium (Cd). There are many common S. lycopersicum varieties available in the market, but their specific Cd tolerance and enrichment abilities are not well understood. This article uses two S. lycopersicum cultivars, Yellow Cherry and Yellow Pearl, as experimental materials. The experimental method of soil pot planting was adopted, and Cd concentrations in the soil were added at 0, 0.6, 1.5, 2.5, 5, and 10 mg/kg. The changes in Cd content, biomass, photosynthetic pigment content, and photosynthetic parameters of the two S. lycopersicum cultivars were analyzed to screen for low-accumulation S. lycopersicum cultivars. The results showed that S. lycopersicum are Cd-sensitive plants. The Cd accumulation, photosynthetic parameters, and other basic indicators of Yellow Cherry basically showed significant differences when the soil Cd concentration was 0.6 mg/kg, and the biomass showed significant differences when the soil Cd concentration was 1.5 mg/kg. Except for the Cd accumulation in the roots and leaves of Yellow Pearl, which showed significant differences at a soil Cd concentration of 0.6 mg/kg, the other indicators basically showed significant differences when the soil Cd concentration was 1.5 mg/kg. When the soil Cd concentration was 0.6 mg/kg, the Cd accumulation in the fruit of Yellow Pearl was 0.04 mg/kg, making it a low-accumulation S. lycopersicum variety suitable for promoting cultivation in Cd-contaminated soil at 0.6 mg/kg. In conclusion, the Cd accumulation in the fruit of Yellow Pearl is significantly lower than that of Yellow Cherry and even below the Cd limit value for fresh vegetables specified in GB2762-2017. Therefore, Yellow Pearl can be grown as edible crops in soils with Cd concentrations ≤0.6 mg/kg. Furthermore, Yellow Cherry demonstrate strong Cd tolerance and can be used for the remediation of Cd-contaminated soils.

Occurrence and patterns of metals in mangrove forests from the Oman Sea, Iran

Concentrations of selected metals were investigated in roots, stems, leaves and sediments from mangrove forests situated along the coast of the Oman Sea, Iran. Results showed that the overall average concentrations of lead, nickel, copper, and zinc in sediments were 47.90, 54.12, 42.13 and 44 μg/g dry weight (dw) and 3.81, 16.41, 29.23 and 25 μg/g dw in plant tissues, respectively. In addition, the bioconcentration factors (BCFs) of root, stem and leaf ranged from 0.5 to 1.7, 0.2 to 1.5, and 0.4 to 1.3, respectively. Pollution indices showed that all investigated sites were in the category of low to moderate pollution (pollution load index: 1.5-0.11), with a 21 % probability of biological toxicity.

Dynamics of heavy metals during the development and decomposition of leaves of Avicennia marina and Kandelia obovata in a subtropical mangrove swamp

In mangrove wetlands, leaves make up a high proportion of the plant biomass and can accumulate heavy metals from contaminated sediment. Despite this, it is still unclear how heavy metal concentrations in leaves change as they develop and how metals in senescence leaves are recycled back into the mangrove ecosystems during decomposition. The present study aims to investigate the dynamics of six heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Pb) in leaves of two common mangrove plants, Avicennia marina and Kandelia obovata, at different stages of development (young, mature, and senescent) and leaf litter decomposition (from 0 to 20 weeks). Based on litterbag experiments in a subtropical mangrove swamp, both plant species showed similar trends in alternations of the six heavy metals during leaf development, that was, decreased in Cu and Zn but increased in Pb, while Cr, Ni, and Cd remained steady. All heavy metals in litter gradually increased in concentration during decomposition. By the end of the 20-weeks decomposition, the concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Cd in decayed leaves were comparable to those in sediment, with Cu, Zn, and Cd at approximately 18, 75, and 0.2 mg·kg^-1, respectively, while Cr (66 mg·kg^-1), Ni (65 mg·kg^-1), and Pb (55 mg·kg^-1) were lower than those in sediment, indicating that metals were not retained in litter but recycled back to the sediment. Tannins in mangrove leaf litter might chelate heavy metals, affecting their migration and transformation of heavy metals in estuarine mangrove wetlands. The findings of our study provide insight into the interactions between toxic heavy metals and mangrove plant species during leaf development, representing the first example of how most metals would be retained in leaf litter during decomposition, thereby reducing their release to estuarine and marine ecosystems.

Biomonitoring coastal pollution on the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Aden using macroalgae: A review

The transporting of oil via the Arabian Gulf for centuries has resulted in the pollution of the coasts by heavy metals, and therefore, remediation actions are needed. In this review, we first evaluated heavy metal pollution on the coasts by assembling the research on published metal concentrations in sediments and water bodies surrounding the Arabian Peninsula. Research revealed uneven pollution of heavy metals, meaning that before remediation, the most polluted sites should be found. This could be done most conveniently using biomonitoring. The Arabian Peninsula is a unique ecoregion due to the extremely high temperature in summer, and therefore, it needs its specific standardization procedure for biomonitoring. To get an overview of the current information on biomonitoring, we gathered a dataset of 306 published macroalgal observations from the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Aden. The heavy metal concentration dataset of macroalgae was analyzed with a multivariate principal component analysis. As a result of the published works elsewhere and our data analysis, we recommend that green Ulva and brown Padina species are used in the biomonitoring of heavy metal pollution on the Arabian Peninsula's eastern and southern coasts. However, more species might be needed if these species do not occur at the site. The species incidence should first be monitored systematically in each area, and common species should be used. The species used should be chosen locally and sampled at the same depth at low tide in spring or early summer, from February to May, before the hottest season. The composite samples of different apical sections of the thallus should be collected. The standardization of the monitoring processes benefits future remediation actions.

The efficiency of trace element uptake by seagrass Cymodocea serrulata in Rabigh lagoon, Red Sea

The search for solutions to environmental pollution has been on the increase, with many questions recently as to which marine organisms can bioaccumulate trace elements in the marine ecosystem. Cadmium, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn concentrations in sediment, seawater, and seagrass compartments (root, rhizome, and leaf blade) were determined at Rabigh lagoon, Red Sea. This is to provide an insight into the potential of Cymodocea serrulata to bioaccumulate trace elements and as a good candidate to biomonitor these elements in a natural aquatic ecosystem. Results revealed significant variations in trace element concentrations across the three compartments of C. serrulata and the sites, with site S8 located in the most closed part of the lagoon recording the highest concentrations for all the trace elements. The translocation factor (TF_rhizome/root = 1.00) of trace elements was higher in the root compartment. This implies that the root compartment is a better bioindicator of trace elements and has more potential to be utilized for biomonitoring. A significant positive correlation (p < 0.01) was established between the trace element concentrations in sediment, seawater, and the three compartments of C. serrulata except for Mn concentration in the compartments. The seagrass C. serrulata can be used for biomonitoring of trace elements in marine ecosystems as our results provide information on its capacity to bioaccumulate these elements. This is one of the key characteristics of a typical bioindicator of aquatic pollutants.

Effect of sampling time on the heavy metal concentrations of brown algae: A bioindicator study on the Arabian Gulf coast

Macroalgae have often been studied as bioindicators for heavy metal pollution on sea coasts including the Arabian Gulf. On the Arabian Gulf coasts, heavy metals are continuously being released by industrial activities and therefore, pollution monitoring is needed. Biomonitoring studies using macroalgae has given highly different assessments due to the variability in algal species and sampling time points. We carried out a systematic monthly sampling of brown algae (Phaeophyta) from three locations on the western coast of the Arabian Gulf between September and February 2018. One urban area (Uqair) and two oil refining areas (Ras Tanura and Jubail) were monitored due to they have a common brown macroalgae species composition. The incidence of Cystoseira myrica, C. trinodis C. osmundacea, Hormophysa cuneiformis, Sargassum aquifolium, S. latifolium, S. filipendula and Padina boryana varied among the sites and with the time of year within the sites. The concentrations of Co, Cd and Pb varied among the sampling sites, the algal species and the sampling time points remarkably. A tentative time-trend increasing towards February was observed for some species. However, it appeared that neither optimum sampling time point, nor superior brown algae species could be recommended. The highest heavy metal accumulation was observed in Padina boryana. However, this species grew only on the two oil polluted sites. We concluded that some brown algae species can be used for biomonitoring heavy metal pollution on the western coast of the Arabian Gulf. The species incidence should be monitored systematically and the species used should be chosen locally and sampled at the same time of the year.

Compost Inoculated with Fungi from a Mangrove Habitat Improved the Growth and Disease Defense of Vegetable Plants

Municipal organic wastes could be exploited as fertilizers, having been given the ability to suppress plant diseases by the inoculation of the waste with certain fungi in the composting process. Our aim was to develop a novel fertilizer using composting in combination with fungi associated with mangrove forests. Nine fungal species were isolated from a mangrove forest habitat and screened for their activity against five phytopathogenic fungi, their plant-growth promotion ability, and their phosphate solubilization ability. Two fungal isolates, Penicillium vinaceum and Eupenicillium hirayama, were inoculated into organic waste before the composting experiment. After 90 days, the physico-chemical properties of the compost (color, moisture, pH, C:N ratio and cation exchange capacity (CEC)) indicated the maturity of the compost. The C:N ratio decreased and the CEC value increased most in the compost with the inoculum of both mangrove fungi. The vegetable plants grown in the mangrove fungi-inoculated composts had a higher vigor index than those grown in the control compost. The seeds collected from the plants grown in the fungi-inoculated composts had higher disease defense ability than the seeds collected from the control compost. The results indicated that the properties of the fungi shown in vitro (antagonistic and plant-growth promotion) remained in the mature compost. The seeds of the plants acquired disease defense ability, which is a remarkable observation that is useful in sustainable agriculture.

Bioaccumulation of metals in mangroves and salt marshes collected from Tuticorin coast of Gulf of Mannar marine biosphere reserve, Southeastern India

Three species of mangroves and six species of salt marshes were collected from various locations along the Tuticorin coast for the estimation of metals like Cu, Cd, Pb, and Zn. The bioaccumulation of metals in mangroves is in the order of Cu > Pb > Zn > Cd, and the season-wise accumulation was higher in monsoon followed by summer, post-monsoon, and pre-monsoon seasons. The accumulation of metals in mangroves showed higher in Rhizophoraapiculata followed by Avicenniamarina, and Rhizophoramucronata. The concentration of metals in salt marshes is in the order of Pb > Zn > Cu > Cd, and the species-wise accumulation showed in the order of Suaeda maritime > Ipomoea sp. > Suaeda sp. > Spinifix littoreous > Sesuvium portacastrum > Ipomoea pes-capras. BAF in salt marhes and mangroves is as Cd < Pb < Cu < Zn and Cd < Cu < Pb < Zn, respectively.

Assessment of the Environmental Status of the Mangrove Ecosystem in the United Arab Emirates

In the Arabian Gulf, mangroves play a particularly important role in maintaining biodiversity. Water and intertidal sediments were collected from eight sampling locations in April 2017 to assess the environmental status of the mangrove forest in the Khor al Beida, Umm Al Quwain, which is one of the largest natural mangrove forests in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Khor al Beida is also a breeding ground for the largest Gulf colony of a regionally endemic Socotra cormorant. Total metal concentrations of water and sediments were measured using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and ranged between 0.001–2.873 mg/L and 0.08–12683.02 mg/kg, respectively. Most metals were within permissible levels, except for copper, iron, aluminum, zinc, and nickel. Hazard Quotient calculations showed low risk to the ecosystem in relation to the presence of heavy metals, with the exception of zinc. Fifty-three diatom species of pennate benthic forms were identified in the intertidal sediments. For the first time in the UAE, diatom composition and diatom diversity values were quantitatively estimated in the surface sediments and a short sediment core. Overall, the assessment suggests that the mangrove forest is currently undisturbed and shows very little anthropogenic impact; yet, protection and conservation efforts are necessary in order to maintain its current status.

Heavy Metal Accumulation and Anti-Oxidative Feedback as a Biomarker in Seagrass Cymodocea serrulata

The pursuit of a good candidate to biomonitor environmental pollutants has been on the increase. In this study, the concentrations of Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd, Cr, Pb and Ni in sediment, seawater and seagrass Cymodocea serrulata compartments and antioxidant enzymes activities in C. serrulata were determined. Our results revealed that bioconcentration factors for all the metals were less than 1 (BCF < 1) and concentrations in seagrass compartments were in the order root > leaf > rhizome for Fe and Mn, leaf > root > rhizome for Cu, Zn, Pb and Ni, and root > rhizome > leaf for Cd and Cr. Effect range low concentrations (ER-L) revealed that Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb and Ni concentrations were above ER-L values and Cr concentration was below ER-L values while concentrations in seawater for all the heavy metals were above the estimate average element concentrations in seawater (ECS). Significant variation (p < 0.05) was recorded for heavy metals in sediment, seawater, seagrass compartments and heavy metal concentrations across stations. Influence of heavy metals on antioxidant enzymes activities; catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) were recorded, and high activities of the antioxidants were recorded in station S8 corresponding to high concentrations of heavy metals in the same station. There is a need for the promotion of biomonitoring networks across the marine environment using C. serrulata and antioxidant enzymes as biomarkers of oxidative stress caused by environmental pollutants.

Spatial distribution and potential ecological risk assessment of some trace elements in sediments and grey mangrove (Avicennia marina) along the Arabian Gulf coast, Saudi Arabia

To assess trace element concentrations (Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr, Cd and Ni) in the mangrove swamps along the Saudi coast of the Arabian Gulf, thirteen samples of surface sediment and leaves of grey mangrove, Avicennia marina were collected and analyzed. The detected trace element contents (μg g-1) in surface sediments were in the following descending order according to their mean values; Cr (49.18) > Zn (48.48) > Cu (43.06) > Pb (26.61) > Ni (22.88) > Cd (3.21). The results showed that the average concentrations of Cd and Pb exceeded their world average concentration of shale. The geo-accumulation, potential ecological risk and toxicity response indices demonstrated that trace elements have posed a considerable ecological risk, especially Cd. The inter-relationships between physico-chemical characters and trace elements suggests that grained particles of mud represent a noteworthy character in the distribution of trace elements compared to organic materials. Moreover, the results revealed that Zn was clearly bioaccumulated in leaf tissues A. marina. Dredging, landfilling, sewage effluents and oil pollution can be the paramount sources of pollution in the area under investigation.

Ecological risk assessment of heavy metal contamination in mangrove habitats, using biochemical markers and pollution indices: A case study of Avicennia marina L. in the Rabigh lagoon, Red Sea

Contamination of mangrove ecosystems, including those of the Red Sea area, has caused serious concern globally. Spatial distribution of heavy metals and their bioaccumulation in one of the common mangrove plants of Saudi Arabia, Avicennia marina L., was evaluated in 8 stations at the Rabigh lagoon to assess the ecological risks due to heavy metal contamination. Among all the heavy metals, Fe concentration was recorded highest (8939.38 ± 312.63 mg/kg) at station S4. Contamination factor (CF) values for all heavy metals determined in this study were recorded in ascending order as Cu < Cr < Mn < Zn < Fe < Ni < Pb < Cd, with the pollution load index pattern recorded in descending order as S6 > S4 > S3 > S5 > S7 > S1 > S8 > S2. Bio-concentration factor (BCF) was <1 for all the heavy metals and there was a positive correlation between the antioxidants and lead (Pb), which can be a result of the ability of A. marina to exclude or detoxify this metal by its mechanism of exclusion or detoxification. A significant correlation existed between the heavy metals concentration in sediment and A. marina leaves at one combination or the other, except for Cu and Cd, which do not correlate with any other metal concentration. The information provided in the present study can be used in the monitoring and measurement of heavy metal pollution in marine ecosystems or other aquatic environments, to prevent several ecological risks to the mangrove ecosystem.
