Abstract
Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a type of polyphenol compound found in rich concentrations in many plants such as green coffee beans. As an active natural substance, CGA exerts diverse therapeutic effects in response to a variety of pathological challenges, particularly conditions associated with chronic metabolic diseases and age-related disorders. It shows multidimensional functions, including neuroprotection for neurodegenerative disorders and diabetic peripheral neuropathy, anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation, anti-pathogens, mitigation of cardiovascular disorders, skin diseases, diabetes mellitus, liver and kidney injuries, and anti-tumor activities. Mechanistically, its integrative functions act through the modulation of anti-inflammation/oxidation and metabolic homeostasis. It can thwart inflammatory constituents at multiple levels such as curtailing NF-kB pathways to neutralize primitive inflammatory factors, hindering inflammatory propagation, and alleviating inflammation-related tissue injury. It concurrently raises pivotal antioxidants by activating the Nrf2 pathway, thus scavenging excessive cellular free radicals. It elevates AMPK pathways for the maintenance and restoration of metabolic homeostasis of glucose and lipids. Additionally, CGA shows functions of neuromodulation by targeting neuroreceptors and ion channels. In this review, we systematically recapitulate CGA's pharmacological activities, medicinal properties, and mechanistic actions as a potential therapeutic agent. Further studies for defining its specific targeting molecules, improving its bioavailability, and validating its clinical efficacy are required to corroborate the therapeutic effects of CGA.

Abstract
One of the objectives of this study consists of the assessment of the antitumor activity of several extracts from three selected plant species: Xanthium spinosum L., Trifolium pratense L., and Coffea arabica L. and also a comparative study of this biological activity, with the aim of establishing a superior herbal extract for antitumor benefits. The phytochemical profile of the extracts was established by HPLC-MS analysis. Further, the selected extracts were screened in vitro for their antitumor activity and antioxidant potential on two cancer cell lines: A549-human lung adenocarcinoma and T47D-KBluc-human breast carcinoma and on normal cells. One extract per plant was selected for in vivo assessment of antitumor activity in an Ehrlich ascites mouse model. The extracts presented high content of antitumor compounds such as caffeoylquinic acids in the case of X. spinosum L. (7.22 µg/mL-xanthatin, 4.611 µg/mL-4-O-caffeoylquinic acid) and green coffee beans (10.008 µg/mL-cafestol, 265.507 µg/mL-4-O-caffeoylquinic acid), as well as isoflavones in the case of T. pratense L. (6806.60 ng/mL-ononin, 102.78 µg/mL-biochanin A). Concerning the in vitro results, the X. spinosum L. extracts presented the strongest anticancerous and antioxidant effects. In vivo, ascites cell viability decreased after T. pratense L. and green coffee bean extracts administration, whereas the oxidative stress reduction potential was important in tumor samples after T. pratense L. Cell viability was also decreased after administration of cyclophosphamide associated with X. spinosum L. and T. pratense L. extracts, respectively. These results suggested that T. pratense L. or X. spinosum L. extracts in combination with chemotherapy can induce lipid peroxidation in tumor cells and decrease the tumor viability especially, T. pratense L. extract.

Abstract
The current study is designed to assay the efficacy of chlorogenic acid (ChA) in the diet on growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, serum immunological, biochemical, and antioxidant variables, and mucosal immune response as well as disease resistance of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) juveniles. Rainbow trout juveniles received diets supplemented with different inclusion levels of ChA (0 (ctrl), 200 (CA1), 400 (CA2), 600 (CA3), and 800 (CA4) mg kg-1 diet) for 60 days. According to the findings, fish from CA3 and CA4 groups demonstrated the best results considering the final weight (FW) and weight gain (WG) (P < 0.05). Also, the group that received 600 mg kg-1 ChA-supplemented diet showed the lowest feed conversion ratio (FCR) and the highest specific growth rate (SGR) compared to other groups (P < 0.05). Moreover, the minimum survival rate (SR) was only detected in the CA4 treatment (P < 0.05). Regression analysis exhibited that rainbow trout growth indices were polynomially linked to dietary chlorogenic acid concentrations. In this regard, the optimal levels of chlorogenic acid according to growth parameters (FCR and SGR) were 0.71 and 0.62 gr kg-1 diet, respectively. The results exhibited superior performance of protease and amylase activities in CA2, CA3, and CA4 groups with the maximum amount in the group receiving 600 mg kg-1 ChA-enriched diet (P < 0.05). Serum lysozyme (LYZ), immunoglobulin (Ig), and components 3 and 4 (C3 and C4) values of CA2, CA3, and CA4 groups were significantly higher than others with the highest amount in the CA3 group (P <0.05). Additionally, serum nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) value in the CA3 and CA4 groups and myeloperoxidase (MPO) in the CA3 group were notably more than others (P < 0.05). Moreover, the lowest aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and the highest total protein (TP) and globulin (GLO) values were observed in CA3 treatment (P < 0.05). CA2 and CA3 groups demonstrated increased serum catalase (CAT) and decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) values compared to the control while the highest CAT and lowest MDA values were observed in CA3 treatment (P < 0.05). Considering mucus immunity, the significantly maximum LYZ and protease values were demonstrated in CA2 and CA3 groups, and the highest ALP, Ig, and esterase values were demonstrated in the CA3 group. In comparison with the control, the mortality rates of the groups that received the ChA diets were remarkably (P < 0.05) lower postchallenge with Y. ruckeri, and the highest survival and relative percentage of survival (RPS) (P < 0.05) belonged to the CA3 group. Results obtained from the current study suggested ChA as a functional dietary additive to raise growth parameters, immune indices, antioxidant capacity, and resistance to disease in rainbow trout.

Abstract
Quinic acid is a cyclohexanecarboxylic acid contained in the extracts of several parts of medicinal plants including Haematocarpus validus, Hypericum empetrifolium, Achillea pseudoaleppica, Rumex nepalensis, Phagnalon saxatile subsp. saxatile, Coffea arabica, Ziziphus lotus L, and Artemisia annua L … etc. Currently, in vitro and in vivo pharmacological studies showed that quinic acid exhibits various biological activities, such as antioxidant, antidiabetic, anticancer activity, antimicrobial, antiviral, aging, protective, anti-nociceptive and analgesic effects. Indeed, QA possesses an important antibacterial effect which could be explained by the fact that this molecule modules the functions of ribosomes and the synthesis of aminoacyl-tRNAs, modifications the levels of glycerophospholipids and fatty acids and disruption of the oxidative phosphorylation pathway thereby causing interference with membrane fluidity. The antidiabetic activity of AQ is achieved by stimulation of insulin secretion via the mobilization of Ca2+ from intracellular reserves and the increase in the NAD(P)H/NAD(P)+ ratio. Its anticancer effect is through the promotion of apoptosis, inhibition of activator protein 1 (AP-1) and signaling pathways involving protein kinase C (PKC) and certain mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), resulting in the downregulation of matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP-9) expression. Therefore, this review describes the main research work carried out on the biological properties of AQ and the mechanism of action underlying some of these effects, as well as the investigations of the main pharmacokinetic studies.

Abstract
Cognitive impairment, also known as cognitive decline, can occur gradually or suddenly and can be temporary or more permanent. It represents an increasingly important public health problem and can depend on normal aging or be linked to different neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). It is now well-established that lifestyle factors including dietary patterns play an important role in healthy aging as well as in the prevention of cognitive decline in later life. Among the natural compounds, dietary polyphenols including phenolic acids have been recently the focus of major attention, with their supplementation being associated with better cognitive status and prevention of cognitive decline. Despite their therapeutic potential, human studies investigating the relation between phenolic acids intake and cognitive outcomes are rather scarce. In this review, we provide preclinical evidence that different dietary polyphenols such as rosmarinic acid, ellagic acid, and cinnamic aldehyde can exert neuroprotective and pro-cognitive activities through different molecular mechanisms including the modulation of pro-oxidant and antioxidant machinery as well as inflammatory status. Future and more numerous in vivo studies are needed to strengthen the promising results obtained at the preclinical level. Despite the excellent pharmacokinetic properties of phenolic acids, which are able to be accumulated in the brain at pharmacologically relevant levels, future studies should also identify which among the different metabolites produced as a consequence of phenolic acids' consumption may be responsible for the potential neuroprotective effects of this subgroup of polyphenols.

Abstract
Oxidative stress (OS) and the resulting reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and inflammation play a pivotal role in the neuronal loss occurring during the onset of neurodegenerative diseases. Therefore, promising future drugs that would prevent or slow down the progression of neurodegeneration should possess potent radical-scavenging activity. Acacia catechu Willd. heartwood extract (AC), already characterized for its high catechin content, is endowed with antioxidant properties. The aim of the present study was to assess AC neuroprotection in both human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells and rat brain slices treated with hydrogen peroxide. In SH-SY5Y cells, AC prevented a decrease in viability, as well as an increase in sub-diploid-, DAPI positive cells, reduced ROS formation, and recovered the mitochondrial potential and caspase-3 activation. AC related neuroprotective effects also occurred in rat brain slices as a reversal prevention in the expression of the main proteins involved in apoptosis and signalling pathways related to calcium homeostasis following OS-mediated injury. Additionally, unbiased quantitative mass spectrometry allowed for assessing that AC partially prevented the hydrogen peroxide-induced altered proteome, including proteins belonging to the synaptic vesicle fusion apparatus. In conclusion, the present results suggest the possibility of AC as a nutraceutical useful in preventing neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced oxidative stress is reportedly associated with progressive neuronal cell damage. Glechoma hederacea L. (Lamiaceae), belonging to the Labiatae family, has demonstrated several biologic activities including depigmentation, antimelanogenic, antitumor, antioxidative, hepatoprotective, and anti-inflammatory activities. Previously, we reported that rosmarinic acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, rutin, genistin, and ferulic acids were the most abundant phytochemicals detected in hot water extracts of G. hederacea L. (HWG). This study aimed to study the neuroprotective effects of phenolic acids and flavonoid-rich HWG against hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 )-induced oxidative damage in PC12 cells and its inhibitory effect on acetylcholinesterase (AChE). The experiment analyzed cytotoxicity, ROS production, mitochondrial transmembrane potential (MMP) level, and caspase-3 activity and used comet assay and antioxidant enzyme activity to determine the redox status of PC12 cells. Results showed that the inhibitory effect of HWG on AChE was in a competitive pattern (IC50 , 23.23 mg/ml). HWG antagonized H2 O2 -mediated cytotoxicity and DNA damage, reduced ROS production, stabilized MMP, and inhibited caspase-3 activity and apoptosis. Furthermore, HWG inhibited the release of cytochrome C and apoptosis-inducing factors (AIF) and decreased the malondialdehyde levels in PC12 cells. Collectively, HWG rich in antioxidant phenolic acids and flavonoids may have neuroprotective effects. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Polyphenolic compounds are one of the most important natural products, known to possess a range of health-promoting effects. In this study, it was found that HWG, which is rich in antioxidant phenolic acids and flavonoids, can protect PC12 cells from oxidative stress induced by H2 O2 and may have neuroprotective effects.

Abstract
Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), as a common disinfectant, has been extensively used in aquaculture. The toxicity of high ambient H2O2 for gills and liver of fish has received attention from many researchers. However, whether H2O2 exposure induced brain injury and neurotoxicity has not been reported in fish. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the potential mechanism of H2O2 toxicity in brain of common carp via transcriptome analysis and biochemical parameter detection. The fish were exposed to 0 (control) and 1 mM of H2O2 for 1 h per day lasting 14 days. The results showed that H2O2 exposure caused oxidative damage in brain evidenced by decreased glutathione (GSH), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) levels, and increased formation of malondialdehyde (MDA) and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG). Meanwhile, H2O2 exposure reduced 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) level, and down-regulated tryptophan hydroxylase 1 (tph1a), tph2, 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 1A-beta (htr1ab) and htr2b expression in brain. Transcriptome analysis showed that H2O2 exposure up-regulated 604 genes and down-regulated 1209 genes in brain. Go enrichment displayed that the differently expressed genes (DEGs) were enriched mainly in cellular process, single-organism process, metabolic process, and biological regulation in the biological process category. Further, KEGG enrichment indicated that H2O2 exposure led to dysregulation of neurotransmitter signals including depression of glutamatergic synapse, GABAergic synapse and endocannabinoid signaling. Also, we found the alteration of three key pathways including calcium, cAMP and HIF-1 in brain after H2O2 exposure. In conclusion, our data indicated that H2O2 exposure induced oxidative damage and neurotoxicity, possibly related to dysregulation of neurotransmitters and calcium, cAMP and HIF-1 signaling pathways, which may adversely affect learning, memory and social responses of common carp. This study provided novel insight into biological effects and underlying mechanism of H2O2 toxicity in aquatic animal, and contributed to proper application of H2O2 in aquaculture.

Abstract
Since 2006, Ficus dubia has been reported as a new Ficus species in Thailand. As per our recent report, the red-brown aqueous extract of F. dubia sap (FDS) has been determined to strongly exhibit in vitro anti-radicals. However, the phytochemicals in the FDS extract related to health-promoting antioxidation have not been explored. Thus, in this study, we aimed to investigate the chemical components of the F. dubia sap extract by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/QTOF-MS) and its potential use in cosmetics in terms of cellular antioxidation on keratinocytes (HaCaT), phototoxicity, and irritation on 3D skin cell models following standard tests suggested by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). It was found that the sap extract was composed of quinic acid and caffeoyl derivatives (e.g., syringoylquinic acid, 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid, 4-O-caffeoylquinic acid, and dimeric forms of caffeoylquinic acids). The extract has significantly exhibited antioxidant activity against H2O2-induced oxidative stress in HaCaT cells. The cellular antioxidative effect of the FDS extract was remarkably dependent on the presence of 3- and 4-O-caffeoylquinic acid in the extract. Furthermore, the FDS extract showed negative results on skin phototoxicity and irritation. Overall, the results reveal that the FDS extract could be developed as a new antioxidant candidate for a skin healthcare product.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Glutamate excitotoxicity contributes to neurodegeneration during cerebral ischemia. Recent studies in the protective effect of glutamate against ischemia and hypoxia have shown the need for questioning the role of glutamate in energy metabolism during ischemia. Current study investigates the effect of glutamate on energy substrate metabolites such as alpha-ketoglutarate, lactate, and pyruvate release during control, oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD), and reoxygenation (REO) conditions. METHODS The effects of 0.5 and 2 mM glutamate on spontaneous alpha-ketoglutarate, lactate, and pyruvate release were tested in vitro, on acute rat cortical slices. Alpha-ketoglutarate, lactate, and pyruvate levels were determined by HPLC with UV detector. RESULTS We observed that glutamate added into medium significantly increased alpha-ketogluarate release under control conditions. Although OGD and REO also had a glutamate-like effect, only REO-induced rise further enhanced by glutamate. In contrast to alpha-ketoglutarate, both OGD and REO conditions caused significant declines in pyruvate and lactate outputs. While OGD and REO-induced declines in pyruvate outputs were further potentiated, lactate output was not altered by glutamate added into the medium. Glutamate and alpha-ketoglutarate, moreover, also ameliorated OGD- and REO-induced losses in 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride staining with a similar degree. CONCLUSION These results indicate that glutamate probably increases alpha-ketoglutarate production as an alternative energy source for use in the TCA cycle under energy-depleted conditions. Thus, increasing the alpha-ketoglutarate production may represent a new therapeutic intervention for neurodegenerative disorders, including cerebral ischemia.

Abstract
Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages worldwide. It is usually identified as a stimulant because of a high content of caffeine. However, caffeine is not the only coffee bioactive component. The coffee beverage is in fact a mixture of a number of bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, especially chlorogenic acids (in green beans) and caffeic acid (in roasted coffee beans), alkaloids (caffeine and trigonelline), and the diterpenes (cafestol and kahweol). Extensive research shows that coffee consumption appears to have beneficial effects on human health. Regular coffee intake may protect from many chronic disorders, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and some types of cancer. Importantly, coffee consumption seems to be also correlated with a decreased risk of developing some neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and dementia. Regular coffee intake may also reduce the risk of stroke. The mechanism underlying these effects is, however, still poorly understood. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the neuroprotective potential of the main bioactive coffee components, i.e., caffeine, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, trigonelline, kahweol, and cafestol. Data from both in vitro and in vivo preclinical experiments, including their potential therapeutic applications, are reviewed and discussed. Epidemiological studies and clinical reports on this matter are also described. Moreover, potential molecular mechanism(s) by which coffee bioactive components may provide neuroprotection are reviewed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Natural phenolic compounds in medicinal herbs and dietary plants are antioxidants which play therapeutic or preventive roles in different pathological situations, such as oxidative stress and inflammation. One of the most studied phenolic compounds in the last decade is chlorogenic acid (CGA), which is a potent antioxidant found in certain foods and drinks. OBJECTIVE This review focuses on the anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive bioactivities of CGA, and the putative mechanisms of action are described. Ethnopharmacological reports related to these bioactivities are also reviewed. MATERIALS AND METHODS An electronic literature search was conducted by authors up to October 2019. Original articles were selected. RESULTS CGA has been shown to reduce inflammation and modulate inflammatory and neuropathic pain in animal models. CONCLUSION The consensus of the literature search was that systemic CGA may facilitate pain management via bolstering antioxidant defenses against inflammatory insults.

Abstract
Although L-DOPA revolutionized in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, most patients developed motor complications after several years of treatment. Adjunctive therapy to L-DOPA with drugs related to dopaminergic signaling may reduce its dose without decreasing the therapeutic efficiency and thus ameliorates its adverse effects. It has been shown that 3,4-diaminopyridine (3,4-DAP), a K channel blocker, increased dopamine release from striatal slices by increasing neuronal firing in striatal dopaminergic terminals. The current study investigates whether 3,4-DAP may enhance L-DOPA-induced dopamine (DA) release from striatal slices by increasing neuronal firing in striatal dopaminergic terminals. The effects of L-DOPA and 3,4-DAP on spontaneous DA and DOPAC release were tested in vitro, on acute rat striatal slices prepared from non-treated and 6-hydroxydopamine-pre-treated rats. DA and DOPAC levels were determined by HPLC methods. When 3,4-diaminopyridine was combined with L-DOPA, the observed effect was considerably greater than the increases induced by L-DOPA or 3,4-DAP alone in normoxic and neurodegenerative conditions produced by FeSO4 and 6-hydroxydopamine. Furthermore, L-DOPA plus 3,4-DAP also ameliorated DOPAC levels in neurodegenerative conditions. These data indicate that 3,4 DAP plus L-DOPA activates striatal dopaminergic terminals by increasing the DA release and, thus, could be considered as a promising finding in treatment of acute and chronic injury in dopaminergic neurons.

Abstract
Objective: In present study, we aimed to clarify effect of aging on the susceptibility of brain tissue to neurodegeneration induced by ischemia.Methods: Damage induced by oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) followed by reoxygenation (REO) were compared in cortical slices prepared from young (3 months of age) and aged (22-24 months of age) male Sprague Dawley rats.Results: After incubation of the slices in an oxygen and glucose containing control condition, 2,3,5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining intensity was found significantly high in aged cortical slices. Although thirty minutes incubation of the slices in OGD medium followed by REO (OGD-REO) caused similar decline in TTC staining in young and aged cortical slices, staining intensity was still significantly higher in the slices prepared from aged animals. Thirty minutes of OGD-REO, on the other hand, also caused more increase in lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage from young slices. While water contents of the slices were almost equal under control condition, it was significantly high in young cortical slices after OGD-REO incubations. In contrary to these findings, OGD and REO caused more increases in S100B output from aged rat cortical slices. S100B levels in brain regions including the cerebral cortex were also found higher in aged rats.Conclusion: All these results indicate that, cortical slices prepared from aged male rats are significantly less responsive to in vitro OGD-REO induced alterations. Since protein S100B outputs were almost doubled from aged cortical slices, a possible involvement of this enhanced S100B output seems to be likely.

Abstract
Background: Chlorogenic acid (CGA) has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, but the study on its role in Alzheimer's disease (AD) models remains rare. Here, the effects of CGA on β-amyloid protein (Aβ)-induced cell models were investigated, aiming to provide a direction for Aβ-induced AD.Material and methods: Hippocampal neurons were separated from newborn Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats and identified by immumofluorescence method. Hippocampal neurons were processed with Aβ25-35 after pre-treatment CGA. MTT assay was used for detecting viability of treated cells. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), malondialdehyde (MDA) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) of treated hippocampal neurons were determined by corresponding kits. Flow cytometry analysis assessed the apoptosis and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) in hippocampal neurons after treatment. The expressions of proteins related to apoptosis and endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) were measured by western blot (WB) analysis.Results: Immumofluorescence method showed that the Aβ25-35 induction models were successfully constructed. CGA increased the viability and decreased the apoptosis rate of Aβ25-35-induced hippocampal neurons. Decreasing activities of LDH and MDA, and raised contents of SOD and GSH-Px were appeared in Aβ25-35-induced cells that pre-treated with CGA. Moreover, CGA also enhanced MMP intensity of hippocampal neurons induced by Aβ25-35. In WB analysis, CGA reversed the promoting effect of Aβ25-35 on the expressions of proteins related to pro-ERS and pro-apoptosis.Conclusion: CGA restrained the apoptosis of Aβ25-35-induced hippocampal neurons via improving the anti-oxidant capacity, mitochondrial injury and ERS state of cells, which may provide a direction for AD.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the ameliorating effect of an ethyl acetate fraction from the fruit Actinidia arguta (EFAA) on amyloid beta (Aβ)-induced neurotoxicity and cognitive deficits in ICR mice. EFAA showed potent protective effects against Aβ-induced neurotoxicity through 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate (DCF-DA), 2',3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release into the assay medium. EFAA treatment reduced the intracellular ROS level and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release in the mitochondria, and increased cell viability in Aβ-induced neuroblastoma MC-IXC cells. The administration of EFAA significantly attenuated Aβ-induced learning and memory deficits, which were evaluated by Y-maze, passive avoidance, and Morris water maze tests. Furthermore, EFAA showed the ameliorating effect of cholinergic functions by increasing acetylcholine (ACh) levels and decreasing acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, and protected antioxidant systems by increasing superoxide dismutase (SOD) and decreasing the oxidized glutathione (GSH)/total GSH and malondialdehyde (MDA) in the brain. Finally, EFAA prevented mitochondrial dysfunction via regulating apoptotic signaling molecules including phosphorylated Akt (p-Akt), phosphorylated tau (p-tau), Bax, and cytochrome c in the brain tissues. Therefore, the present study suggests that EFAA might be a potential source of natural antioxidants with the ability to ameliorate Aβ-induced amnesia.

Abstract
Immobilization induces oxidative damage to the brain. Ilex paraguariensis extracts (Mate) and their major natural compound, chlorogenic acid (CGA), exert protective effects against reactive oxygen species formation. Here, the effects of Mate and CGA on oxidative damage induced by chronic immobilization stress (CIS) in the cortex, hippocampus, and striatum were investigated. For CIS, animals were immobilized for 6 h every day for 21 consecutive days. Rats received Mate or CGA by intragastric gavage 30 min before every restraint session. Endpoints of oxidative stress (levels of lipid peroxidation, protein carbonylation, and reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) forms of glutathione) were evaluated following CIS. While CIS increased oxidized lipid and carbonyl levels in all brain regions, CGA (and Mate to a lesser extent) attenuated lipid and protein oxidation as compared with control groups. GSH/GSSG balance showed a tendency to increase in all regions in response to stress and antioxidants. Taken together, our results support a protective role of dietary antioxidants against the neuronal consequences of stress.

Abstract
The neuroprotective role of phenolic acids from food has previously been reported by many authors. In this review, the role of phenolic acids in ameliorating depression, ischemia/reperfusion injury, neuroinflammation, apoptosis, glutamate-induced toxicity, epilepsy, imbalance after traumatic brain injury, hyperinsulinemia-induced memory impairment, hearing and vision disturbances, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, anti-amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Chagas disease and other less distributed diseases is discussed. This review covers the in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo studies concerning the prevention and treatment of neurological disorders (on the biochemical and gene expression levels) by phenolic acids.

Abstract
Osteoporosis is a disorder of bone and its development is closely associated with oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Chlorogenic acid (CGA) has potential antioxidant effects and its pharmacological action in osteoblasts is not clearly understood. The present study aimed to clarify the protective effects and mechanisms of CGA on hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced oxidative stress in osteoblast cells. MC3T3-E1 cells were treated with H2O2 to induce oxidative stress model in vitro. Cells were treated with CGA prior to H2O2 exposure, the intracellular ROS production, malondialdehyde content, nitric oxide release and glutathione level were measured. We also investigated the protein levels of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), the nuclear translocation of transcription factor NF-erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) and the phosphorylation levels of Akt in CGA-treated cells. The results showed that pretreatment of CGA could reverse the inhibition of cell viability and suppress the induced apoptosis and caspase-3 activity. Additionally, it significantly reduced H2O2-induced oxidative damage in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, it induced the protein expression of HO-1 together with its upstream mediator Nrf2, and activated the phosphorylation of Akt in MC3T3-E1 cells. LY294002, a PI3K/Akt inhibitor, significantly suppressed the CGA-induced Nrf2 nuclear translocation and HO-1 expression. Reduction of cell death mediated by CGA in presence of H2O2 was significantly inhibited by Zinc protoporphyrin IX (a HO-1 inhibitor) and LY294002. These data demonstrated that CGA protected MC3T3-E1 cells against oxidative damage via PI3K/Akt-mediated activation of Nrf2/HO-1 pathway, which may be an effective drug in treatment of osteoporosis.
