Longitudinal associations of physical fitness and affect with depression, anxiety and life satisfaction in adult women with fibromyalgia

The mediating role of individual evaluation, anxiety, and depression in the association between leisure activity and cognitive function among Chinese older adults

The purpose of this research was to investigate the association between leisure activity and cognitive function in Chinese older adults, and to explore the mediating role of individual evaluation, anxiety and depression. Using cross-sectional data from the 2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), Pearson correlation analyses were employed to examine the relationships among various indicators. A multiple mediation model was constructed to investigate the mediating pathways through which leisure activities impact cognitive function in elderly individuals. Leisure activities, individual evaluation, anxiety, and depression were significantly correlated with cognitive function (p < 0.01). Leisure activities not only directly positively impacted cognitive function in elderly individuals (effect = 0.3780; 95% CI = [0.3459, 0.4101]), but also exerted indirect effects through five pathways. Individual evaluation, anxiety, depression, they plays a mediating role in the association between leisure activity and cognitive function in older adults in China. Leisure activities can positively impact cognitive function in elderly individuals by enhancing individual evaluation and subsequently reducing anxiety and depression.

Physical Activity, Alcohol, and Cigarette Use in Urological Cancer Patients over Time since Diagnosis

Urological cancers represent a substantial global public health concern, exerting far-reaching effects on both individuals and their families. There is an urgent need to comprehensively understand the transformations in patients' lifestyles and behaviors, given their critical role in the treatment process and overall well-being. This study, involving 128 urological cancer patients, aims to investigate changes in physical activity levels, problematic drinking behaviors assessed through the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), and smoking habits assessed using the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) over four distinct time intervals over the subsequent three years from the time of diagnosis and among individuals diagnosed more than three years ago. The results reveal a significant decrease in physical activity levels between study intervals (p < 0.0001), declining from 69% to 45% between the first and second post-diagnosis assessments. Furthermore, the highest levels of problematic substance use, indicated by mean scores, were noted in the first year following diagnosis (AUDIT: 4.20, p = 0.01; FTND: 4.83, p = 0.08). Given the significant impact of physical activity on the prospects of recovery, it is imperative to delve more deeply into the factors contributing to this decline and devise targeted interventions for its improvement. In the context of substance use, it is essential to ascertain whether the initially high levels are a result of coping with the cancer diagnosis or represent a turning point at which patients modify their behaviors and cease their addiction. A more thorough understanding of this phenomenon would enhance the effectiveness of precisely focused interventions.

Influence of socio-affective factors on quality of life in women diagnosed with fibromyalgia

Introduction

Fibromyalgia is a disease that involves chronic pain, with high prevalence in the female population and great impact on the bio-psycho-social sphere of people affected by it. However, few studies have analyzed the possible influence of socio-affective factors on the quality of life of people who suffer from this disease.

Objective

The aim of this study was to determine the relationships between the impact of this disease on the lives of people with fibromyalgia and these variables. Specifically, we analyzed the quality of partner relationship, perceived loneliness, life satisfaction, and perceived socio-family situation.

Method

A descriptive-correlational cross-sectional design was used. The sample consisted of 69 women diagnosed with fibromyalgia. The participants completed different questionnaires that measured their happiness, satisfaction with life, perceived loneliness, quality of partner relationship, socio-family valuation, and the impact of fibromyalgia.

Results

The quality of partner relationship, perceived loneliness and socio-family valuation seem to be good predictors of subjective happiness, life satisfaction, and the impact that fibromyalgia has on people's lives, in the sense that the more positive the valuation of the couple relationship and of the socio-family situation, and the lower the perceived loneliness, people feel happier, more satisfied with their lives and the lower the impact that fibromyalgia has on their lives.

Conclusion

The 50% of satisfaction with life can be explained from the scores obtained in perceived loneliness and the quality of partner relationship. In this sense, perceived loneliness was a good predictor of the impact of fibromyalgia on the lives of these patients.

Sedentary time is associated with depressive symptoms and state anxiety in women with fibromyalgia. Could physical activity and fitness modify this association? The al-Ándalus project

PURPOSE

To analyze the associations of total and prolonged sedentary time (ST) with depressive symptoms and state anxiety in women with fibromyalgia and whether these associations are modified by moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and physical fitness.

METHODS

This cross-sectional exploratory study included 386 women with fibromyalgia aged 51.2 ± 7.6 years. Total ST, time in prolonged bouts of ST (≥30- and ≥60-min) and MVPA were measured with triaxial accelerometry. Depressive symptoms were assessed with the "Beck Depression Inventory-second edition," state anxiety with the "State-Trait Anxiety Inventory," and physical fitness with the "Senior Fitness Test Battery."

RESULTS

Total and prolonged ST were directly associated with depressive symptoms (total: β = 0.19, ≥30-min bout: β = 0.15, and ≥60-min bout: β = 0.12) and odds of severe depressive symptoms (all, p < 0.001). These associations generally remained significant after adjustments for MVPA and physical fitness (all, p < 0.05). Total and prolonged ST were directly associated with state anxiety (total: β = 0.11, ≥30-min bout: β = 0.12, and ≥60-min bout: β = 0.07; all, p < 0.001). These associations were generally independent of MVPA (p < 0.05) but vanished when considering physical fitness (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Higher levels of total and prolonged ST are associated with greater depressive symptoms and state anxiety in women with fibromyalgia. MVPA did not modify these associations, although physical fitness could play a protective role specially for state anxiety.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONReducing sedentary time and avoiding its accumulation in prolonged periods could potentially reduce depressive symptoms and state anxiety in fibromyalgia.Higher sedentary time is associated with more severe depressive symptoms even in patients who engage in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity.Higher levels of physical fitness could attenuate the negative associations of sedentary time with depressive symptoms and, specially, state anxiety."Sit less, move more and exercise to increase your fitness" could be a positive message for people with fibromyalgia in clinical settings.

Ataque de nervios: The impact of sociodemographic, health history, and psychological dimensions on Puerto Rican adults

Introduction

Ataque de nervios (ADN) is a cultural syndrome prevalent in Puerto Ricans characterized as an episode of intense emotional upset due to overwhelming stress.

Methods

The Ataque de Nervios Questionnaire, developed at the Center for the Study and Treatment for Fear and Anxiety (CETMA), served as the diagnostic tool for this retrospective secondary data analysis. We evaluated three models regarding ADN's function as a marker of (1) sociodemographic vulnerability, (2) health history risk, and (3) psychological vulnerability. This last model was subdivided to assess the scores of screening tests regarding anxiety (Anxiety Sensitivity Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory), affect (Beck Depression Inventory, Emotional Dysregulation Scale, Positive and Negative Affective Schedule), personality (NEO Five-Factor Inventory), and trauma (considering the responses to the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and the Life Event Checklist).

Results

Our study sample had a total of 121 Puerto Rican adult patients from CETMA out of which 75% had ADN. We differentiated subjects according to their ADN status with t-tests and Mann-Whitney U tests and evaluated our models using logistic regressions. People with ADN showed more anxiety, depressive symptoms, emotional dysregulation, and negative affect than those without ADN. They also revealed lower positive affect and agreeableness. Highly extraverted but minimally agreeable personalities related to ADN. Living with a partner and being employed were risk factors for ADN. Having higher educational levels showed the strongest effect size: it greatly reduced the odds of an ataque.

Discussion

These characteristics suggest a distinct profile of ADN seen in employed, educated, adult Puerto Ricans living on the Island experiencing anxiety. Our study provides clinical tools to comprehend our patients' ADN experience, enriching our practice as culturally competent health providers.

Understanding the Associations across Fibromyalgia-Related Fatigue, Depression, Anxiety, Self-Esteem Satisfaction with Life and Physical Activity in Portuguese and Brazilian Patients: A Structural Equation Modeling Analysis

Background and Objectives: Fibromyalgia are heterogeneous and differ from patient to patient; however, the most reported are general myalgia and at specific points associated with fatigue and certain psychological adversities. Physical activity can mitigate the effects of the symptoms. However, the associations between fibromyalgia-related fatigue, self-esteem, anxiety, depression, satisfaction with life and physical activity are unclear. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to understand the associations between these symptoms and whether there are differences between these associations across two distinct cultures. Materials and Methods: A total of 473 women aged between 28 and 75 years (M = 49.27; SD ± 8.28) completed five questionnaires about fibromyalgia-related fatigue, physical activity, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and satisfaction with life. Results: Fibromyalgia-related fatigue was positively associated with depression and anxiety, depression and anxiety were negatively associated with self-esteem, self-esteem was positively associated with satisfaction with life, satisfaction with life was positively associated with physical activity and there were no differences in terms of the perceptions and associations of these variables between Portuguese and Brazilian patients. Conclusions: Our results showed the significant role of associations between these variables and a similarity in the perception and relationship of the variables between the two cultures.

Feasibility Study of Mass Sports Fitness Program Based on Neural Network Algorithm

Mass sports has become a world trend, setting off a new health revolution in the world. Mass fitness programs not only enrich people's lives. It not only relieves the psychological pressure of modern people but also promotes people's health and improves people's quality of life. According to the time-consuming stability of neural network algorithm, this paper proposes a sports video recognition algorithm based on BP neural network. The static and dynamic features are classified by BP neural network, and the basic probability assignment is constructed according to the preliminary recognition results. At the same time, we use evidence theory to fuse the preliminary results and get the results of motion video recognition. It can be applied to the generation model of the feasible scheme of mass sports fitness. Relevant experiments show that the whole model that generates the feasible mass sports fitness scheme can accurately generate the sports fitness scheme of multiple patient users and ensure the rationality and safety of the sports fitness scheme.
