Career choice motivation and professionalism in medical students in China: a gender-stratified analysis

OBJECTIVE

To examine the associations between career choice motivation and professionalism among medical students based on gender in the context of COVID-19.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional study.

SETTING

The study was conducted at a medical school in China.

METHODS

A total of 1421 second-year to fourth-year medical students participated in the survey using cluster sampling. They were asked to complete questionnaires on demographic information, career choice motivation and professionalism. Linear regression models were used to analyse the relationship between career choice motivations and professionalism based on gender differences.

RESULTS

Female medical students outperformed males in professionalism (p<0.001). Third-year medical students have the lowest level of professionalism irrespective of gender. In addition, females have more intrinsic career choice motivation than males. Students motivated by personal interest had the highest level of professionalism, while those who go with the flow had the lowest. According to the linear regression analysis, the motivation advice from parents was the factor of professionalism in male medical students (p<0.05). However, the motivation go with the flow negatively influenced the professionalism of female medical students (p<0.05).

CONCLUSION

The level of professionalism differed between genders based on different career choice motivations. Career choice motivation can be used as an entry point for professionalism education among medical students. Targeted interventions should be implemented to improve professionalism, especially for male medical students and unmotivated students.

The evolution of data pricing: From economics to computational intelligence

Data pricing, which aids in articulating the worth and advantages of data and encourages its opening, sharing, and circulation, is an indispensable component of data trading. Studies pertinent to the topic of data pricing are continuously developing. To undertake a thorough analysis of the literature in data pricing, we use bibliometric and statistical methods for the first time. The 373 data pricing publications from 1990 to 2023 are the study's research object. We mainly analyze the external characteristics, keyword co-occurrence and co-citation networks of data pricing. We find that data pricing has been progressing fairly quickly during the last decade. Two basic approaches have been used by researchers to study how to price various data objects: one is based on economics theory, and the other on computer science algorithms. We provide an in-depth study of the overall evolution of data pricing and give the future directions of data pricing.

Chinese medical students reflections on medical professionalism: A qualitative thematic analysis

There is no common medical professionalism framework in China, mandating work to conceptualize professionalism from various perspectives. Studies on students viewpoints about medical professionalism are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate how Chinese medical students perceive professionalism to provide a reference for future medical education reform and policy development. Fifty-four written reflections on medical professionalism were collected from first-year students of China 4 + 4 medical education program enrolled in 2020 to 2021 academic years. Essays were subjected to thematic analysis using NVivo 12. Three main themes emerged: inter-personal, intra-personal, and public professionalism. Students emphasized the importance of physician-patient relationships, proficiency of medical knowledge, and enthusiasm for promoting health-related issues. By contrast, teamwork and confidentiality were not considered essential aspects of professionalism. The medical professionalism framework articulated by students in China was roughly the same as in other countries. Where there were differences, these may have been due to the unique sociocultural environment. Future medical professionalism education should be adjusted according to students understanding of professionalism.

Data Analysis of Physician Competence Research Trend: Social Network Analysis and Topic Modeling Approach

BACKGROUND

Studies on competency in medical education often explore the acquisition, performance, and evaluation of particular skills, knowledge, or behaviors that constitute physician competency. As physician competency reflects social demands according to changes in the medical environment, analyzing the research trends of physician competency by period is necessary to derive major research topics for future studies. Therefore, a more macroscopic method is required to analyze the core competencies of physicians in this era.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to analyze research trends related to physicians' competency in reflecting social needs according to changes in the medical environment.

METHODS

We used topic modeling to identify potential research topics by analyzing data from studies related to physician competency published between 2011 and 2020. We preprocessed 1354 articles and extracted 272 keywords.

RESULTS

The terms that appeared most frequently in the research related to physician competency since 2010 were knowledge, hospital, family, job, guidelines, management, and communication. The terms that appeared in most studies were education, model, knowledge, and hospital. Topic modeling revealed that the main topics about physician competency included Evidence-based clinical practice, Community-based healthcare, Patient care, Career and self-management, Continuous professional development, and Communication and cooperation. We divided the studies into 4 periods (2011-2013, 2014-2016, 2017-2019, and 2020-2021) and performed a linear regression analysis. The results showed a change in topics by period. The hot topics that have shown increased interest among scholars over time include Community-based healthcare, Career and self-management, and Continuous professional development.

CONCLUSIONS

On the basis of the analysis of research trends, it is predicted that physician professionalism and community-based medicine will continue to be studied in future studies on physician competency.

Do Moral Judgments in Moral Dilemmas Make One More Inclined to Choose a Medical Degree?

The role of moral intuitions and moral judgments has become increasingly prominent in educational and academic choices. The present research aims to examine if the moral judgments elicited in sacrificial trolley dilemmas have a distinct pattern for the decisions made by junior medical students, in comparison to those of senior high school students. We work with this sample because it represents the population out of which medical students are recruited in the case of Bucharest, Romania. Our findings show that moral judgments are indeed a significant predictor for a respondent's status as medical students. This result, albeit with limitations, bears multiple practical implications, from developing empirically informed medical ethics courses in medical schools to evidence-based policy designs which consider factors such as morality alongside financial outcomes and incentives.

Visual Analysis of Uterine Adhesion Research Based on CiteSpace: Bibliometric Analysis From 2006 to 2021

Background

Intrauterine adhesionis caused by a variety of reasons, such as damage of the endometrial basal layer, adhesion or occlusion of the uterine cavity or cervix in different degrees. Seriously endangering women's physical and mental health.

Objective

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the research development of intrauterine adhesions in recent 15 years, explore the future development direction, and promote the development of this field.

Methods

With intrauterine adhesions and Ashman's syndrome as the theme, the related literatures from January 2006 to July 2021 in the Web of Science were searched, and the visual atlas was analyzed by CiteSpace software.

Results

A total of 644 literatures were included. The key words related to intrauterine adhesion mainly include adhesion, pregnancy, expression, intrauterine adhesions, women, adhesion molecule, diagnosis, activation, hysteroscopy and fertility, etc. Six clusters were obtained by keywords analysis, involving hysteroscopy, placenta, office hysteroscopy, uterus and laparoscopy. Co-occurrence of keywords shows that the research focus in recent years is on endometrial repair and regeneration.

Conclusions

Through the bibliometric analysis of WOS research on intrauterine adhesions in recent 15 years, the comprehensive analysis of countries, institutions, authors and keywords is obtained, which has a clear guiding significance for guiding the future development of intrauterine adhesions.
