Ten years of charge-inverted hydrogen bonds

Similarities and Differences of Hydridic and Protonic Hydrogen Bonding

Ab initio calculations were employed to investigate the interactions between selected electron-donating groups, characterized by M-H bonds (where M represents a transition metal and H denotes a hydridic hydrogen), and electron-accepting groups featuring both σ- and π-holes. The study utilized the ωB97X-D3BJ/def2-TZVPPD level of theory. Hydridic hydrogen complexes were found in all complexes with σ- and π-holes. A comparative analysis was conducted on the properties hydridic H-bond complexes, presented here and those studied previously, alongside an extended set of protonic H-bonds complexes. While the stabilization energies changes in M-H bond lengths, vibrational frequencies, intensities of the spectral bands, and charge transfer for these complexes are comparable, the nature of hydridic and protonic H-bonds fundamentally differ. In protonic H-bond complexes, the main stabilization forces arise from electrostatic contributions, while in hydridic H-bond complexes, dispersion energy, is the primary stabilization factor due to the excess of electrons and thus larger polarizability at hydridic H. The finding represents an important characteristic that distinguishes hydridic H-bonding from protonic H-bonds.

IR spectrum of SiH3OH2+SiH4: cationic OH⋯HSi dihydrogen bond versus charge-inverted SiH⋯Si hydrogen bond

The low electronegativity of Si gives rise to a variety of nonconventional intermolecular interactions in clusters of silanes and their derivatives, which have not been well characterized yet. Herein, we characterize the structures of various isomers of bare and Ar-tagged SiH3OH2+SiH4 dimers composed of protonated silanol and silane by infrared photodissociation (IRPD) of mass-selected ions and dispersion-corrected density functional calculations (B3LYP-D3/aug-cc-pVTZ). The analysis of the IRPD spectra recorded in the OH stretch range reveals the competition between two types of nonconventional hydrogen bonds (H-bonds). The first one represents a OH⋯HSi ionic dihydrogen bond (DHB), in which SiH4 interacts with the H2O moiety of SiH3OH2+. The second one represents a charge-inverted SiH⋯Si ionic H-bond (CIHB), in which the SiH4 ligand interacts with the SiH3 moiety of SiH3OH2+. The latter may also be considered as a weak three-centre two-electron (3c-2e) bond. Although both types of H-bonds are computed to have comparable interaction strengths for SiH3OH2+SiH4 (D0 ≈ 35-40 kJ mol-1), DHB isomers dominate the population in the supersonic plasma expansion, while the abundance of CIHB isomers is roughly one order of magnitude lower, probably as a result of entropic factors.

Hydrogen bond types which do not fit accepted definitions

There are various interactions that either partially fit or do not fit the currently accepted definitions of the hydrogen bond. However, they possess characteristics of this interaction. It seems that it is partly connected to the fact that these definitions are not precise. The typical 3c-4e (three centres - four electrons) A-H⋯B hydrogen bond is characterized by the single-atom A and B centres that are highly electronegative. On the other hand, non-typical interactions that do not fit the hydrogen bond definitions well are characterised by uncommon proton donors and/or proton acceptors. The cases of multi-centre proton acceptors, π-electron or σ-electron systems are well known - such interactions are designated as A-H⋯π and A-H⋯σ hydrogen bonds, respectively. However, the cases of interactions with the multi-centre proton donors and proton acceptors do not fit the majority of definitions of hydrogen bond. The π⋯H+⋯π system in the proton-bound homodimer of acetylene is an example. This system can be classified as a hydrogen bond according to the two-sites hydrogen bond, 2sHB, definition. There are various types of interactions discussed in this review; among them, those that are undoubtedly unclassified as hydrogen bonds, i.e., hydride bonds, and charge inverted hydrogen bonds, CIHBs. Special emphasis is also put here on the proton sponges and other systems such as the [FHF]- anion or [NgHNg]+ cation (Ng is the noble gas centre).

Theoretical Insights into Bifurcated Intramolecular Dihydrogen Bonds

Two-ring intramolecular π-electron delocalization assisted dihydrogen bonds existing in (1Z,4Z)-1,4-dipentene-3-bora-1,5-diol and its symmetrically substituted derivatives have been analysed here since the MP2/6-311++G(d,p) calculations on these systems were performed. The influence of the coexistence of two intramolecular dihydrogen bonded rings in these molecular structures on properties of intramolecular dihydrogen bonds as well as on the π-electron delocalization within these rings was investigated. The comparison with corresponding structures of typical two-ring, so-called resonance-assisted, RAHB, systems was performed. The results of calculations show that such rings' coexistence leads to the weakening of dihydrogen bonds, similarly as for the typical two-ring RAHB systems. The Quantum Theory of ''Atoms in Molecules'' (QTAIM) was also applied here to get more details about the nature of dihydrogen bonds. Correlations between dihydrogen bond strength measures and other energetic, geometrical and topological parameters were also analysed. It was found that characteristics of bond critical points as well as of ring critical points are useful to estimate the strength of intramolecular dihydrogen bonds in two-ring dihydrogen bonded systems discussed here. The Natural Bond Orbital, NBO, approach parameters are also discussed as useful ones to describe properties of dihydrogen bonded systems.

Association Complexes of Calix[6]arenes with Amino Acids Explained by Energy-Partitioning Methods

Intermolecular complexes with calixarenes are intriguing because of multiple possibilities of noncovalent binding for both polar and nonpolar molecules, including docking in the calixarene cavity. In this contribution calix[6]arenes interacting with amino acids are studied with an additional aim to show that tools such as symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT), functional-group SAPT (F-SAPT), and systematic molecular fragmentation (SMF) methods may provide explanations for different numbers of noncovalent bonds and of their varying strength for various calixarene conformers and guest molecules. The partitioning of the interaction energy provides an easy way to identify hydrogen bonds, including those with unconventional hydrogen acceptors, as well as other noncovalent bonds, and to find repulsive destabilizing interactions between functional groups. Various other features can be explained by energy partitioning, such as the red shift of an IR stretching frequency for some hydroxy groups, which arises from their attraction to the phenyl ring of calixarene. Pairs of hydrogen bonds and other noncovalent bonds of similar magnitude found by F-SAPT explain an increase in the stability of both inclusion and outer complexes.

Si-H···Se Chalcogen-Hydride Bond Quantified by Diffraction and Topological Analyses

The Si-H···Se contact in 1-mesitylselanyl-8-(dimethylsilyl)naphthalene (1), which exhibits the spatial arrangement of a δ-agostic interaction from geometric considerations, was investigated. Is this just enforced by close 1,8-proximity or is this a favorable interaction? Charge density studies are best suited to investigate the exact origin of the interaction and to quantify the properties. Hence, they are most elucidating. High-resolution X-ray diffraction data of 1 were collected, and a multipole refinement followed by a topological analysis using Bader's quantum theory of atoms in molecules was employed. The resulting bond properties were set in relation to high-level computational parameters. The comparison to Si-H···[M] agostics, hydride bonding, chalcogen bonds, and charge-inverted hydrogen bonds qualified the Si-H···Se noncovalent interaction to be best classified as a chalcogen-hydride bond.

The Phosphorus Bond, or the Phosphorus-Centered Pnictogen Bond: The Covalently Bound Phosphorus Atom in Molecular Entities and Crystals as a Pnictogen Bond Donor

The phosphorus bond in chemical systems, which is an inter- or intramolecular noncovalent interaction, occurs when there is evidence of a net attractive interaction between an electrophilic region associated with a covalently or coordinately bonded phosphorus atom in a molecular entity and a nucleophile in another, or the same, molecular entity. It is the second member of the family of pnictogen bonds, formed by the second member of the pnictogen family of the periodic table. In this overview, we provide the reader with a snapshot of the nature, and possible occurrences, of phosphorus-centered pnictogen bonding in illustrative chemical crystal systems drawn from the ICSD (Inorganic Crystal Structure Database) and CSD (Cambridge Structural Database) databases, some of which date back to the latter part of the last century. The illustrative systems discussed are expected to assist as a guide to researchers in rationalizing phosphorus-centered pnictogen bonding in the rational design of molecular complexes, crystals, and materials and their subsequent characterization.

Sensitivity of Intra- and Intermolecular Interactions of Benzo[h]quinoline from Car-Parrinello Molecular Dynamics and Electronic Structure Inspection

The O-H...N and O-H...O hydrogen bonds were investigated in 10-hydroxybenzo[h]quinoline (HBQ) and benzo[h]quinoline-2-methylresorcinol complex in vacuo, solvent and crystalline phases. The chosen systems contain analogous donor and acceptor moieties but differently coupled (intra- versus intermolecularly). Car–Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) was employed to shed light onto principle components of interactions responsible for the self-assembly. It was applied to study the dynamics of the hydrogen bonds and vibrational features as well as to provide initial geometries for incorporation of quantum effects and electronic structure studies. The vibrational features were revealed using Fourier transformation of the autocorrelation function of atomic velocity and by inclusion of nuclear quantum effects on the O-H stretching solving vibrational Schrödinger equation a posteriori. The potential of mean force (Pmf) was computed for the whole trajectory to derive the probability density distribution and for the O-H stretching mode from the proton vibrational eigenfunctions and eigenvalues incorporating statistical sampling and nuclear quantum effects. The electronic structure changes of the benzo[h]quinoline-2-methylresorcinol dimer and trimers were studied based on Constrained Density Functional Theory (CDFT) whereas the Electron Localization Function (ELF) method was applied for all systems. It was found that the bridged proton is localized on the donor side in both investigated systems in vacuo. The crystalline phase simulations indicated bridged proton-sharing and transfer events in HBQ. These effects are even more pronounced when nuclear quantization is taken into account, and the quantized Pmf allows the proton to sample the acceptor area more efficiently. The CDFT indicated the charge depletion at the bridged proton for the analyzed dimer and trimers in solvent. The ELF analysis showed the presence of the isolated proton (a signature of the strongest hydrogen bonds) only in some parts of the HBQ crystal simulation. The collected data underline the importance of the intramolecular coupling between the donor and acceptor moieties.

Study of Beryllium, Magnesium, and Spodium Bonds to Carbenes and Carbodiphosphoranes

The aim of this article is to present results of theoretical study on the properties of C⋯M bonds, where C is either a carbene or carbodiphosphorane carbon atom and M is an acidic center of MX2 (M = Be, Mg, Zn). Due to the rarity of theoretical data regarding the C⋯Zn bond (i.e., the zinc bond), the main focus is placed on comparing the characteristics of this interaction with C⋯Be (beryllium bond) and C⋯Mg (magnesium bond). For this purpose, theoretical studies (ωB97X-D/6-311++G(2df,2p)) have been performed for a large group of dimers formed by MX2 (X = H, F, Cl, Br, Me) and either a carbene ((NH2)2C, imidazol-2-ylidene, imidazolidin-2-ylidene, tetrahydropyrymid-2-ylidene, cyclopropenylidene) or carbodiphosphorane ((PH3)2C, (NH3)2C) molecule. The investigated dimers are characterized by a very strong charge transfer effect from either the carbene or carbodiphosphorane molecule to the MX2 one. This may even be over six times as strong as in the water dimer. According to the QTAIM and NCI method, the zinc bond is not very different than the beryllium bond, with both featuring a significant covalent contribution. However, the zinc bond should be definitely stronger if delocalization index is considered.

A Critical Overview of Current Theoretical Methods of Estimating the Energy of Intramolecular Interactions

This article is probably the first such comprehensive review of theoretical methods for estimating the energy of intramolecular hydrogen bonds or other interactions that are frequently the subject of scientific research. Rather than on a plethora of numerical data, the main focus is on discussing the theoretical rationale of each method. Additionally, attention is paid to the fact that it is very often possible to use several variants of a particular method. Both of the methods themselves and their variants often give wide ranges of the obtained estimates. Attention is drawn to the fact that the applicability of a particular method may be significantly limited by various factors that disturb the reliability of the estimation, such as considerable structural changes or new important interactions in the reference system.

Study of the influence of intermolecular interaction on classical and reverse substituent effects in para-substituted phenylboranes

The substituent effect and the reverse substituent effect in para-substituted phenylboranes and the influence of the intermolecular interaction of H⋯B type with either silane or methylsilane on the latter of these effects are extensively studied.
