Abstract
OBJECTIVE The prognostic role of baseline calcium levels in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is conflicting. We aimed to conduct the first meta-analysis in the literature to examine if baseline calcium levels can predict outcomes after ICH. METHODS English-language studies listed on the databases of Embase, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science were searched up to 20th November 2023. Meta-analysis was conducted for baseline hematoma volume, hematoma expansion, unfavorable functional outcome, and mortality. RESULTS Ten studies were included. Meta-analysis showed that patients with hypocalcemia have significantly higher baseline hematoma volume (MD: 8.6 95 % CI: 3.30, 13.90 I2 = 88 %) but did not have a higher risk of hematoma expansion (OR: 1.82 95 % CI: 0.89, 3.73 I2 = 82 %). Meta-analysis of crude (OR: 1.86 95 % CI: 1.25, 2.78 I2 = 63 %) and adjusted data (OR: 2.05 95 % CI: 1.27, 3.28 I2 = 64 %) showed those with hypocalcemia had a significantly higher risk of unfavorable functional outcomes. Meta-analysis of both crude (OR: 2.09 95 % CI: 1.51, 2.88 I2 = 80 %) and adjusted data (OR: 1.38 95 % CI: 1.14, 1.69 I2 = 70 %) also demonstrated a significantly higher risk of mortality in patients with hypocalcemia. CONCLUSION Baseline serum calcium may have a prognostic role in ICH. Hypocalcemia at baseline may lead to large hematoma volume and poor functional and survival outcomes. However, there seems to be no relation between hypocalcemia and the risk of hematoma expansion. Further studies examining the role of calcium on ICH prognosis are needed.

Abstract
One of the early symptoms of chronic venous disease (CVD) is varicose veins (VV) of the lower limbs. There are many etiological environmental factors influencing the development of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), although genetic factors and family history of the disease play a key role. All these factors induce changes in the hemodynamic in the venous system of the lower limbs leading to blood stasis, hypoxia, inflammation, oxidative stress, proteolytic activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), changes in microcirculation and, consequently, the remodeling of the venous wall. The aim of this review is to present current knowledge on CVD, including the pathophysiology and mechanisms related to vein wall remodeling. Particular emphasis has been placed on describing the role of inflammation and oxidative stress and the involvement of extracellular hemoglobin as pathogenetic factors of VV. Additionally, active substances used in the treatment of VV were discussed.

Abstract
Venous thromboembolism is one of the most common vascular diseases. Increased thrombin formation together with reduced blood flow create a hypercoagulable environment that induces thrombus formation. Anticoagulants play a pivotal role in the treatment and secondary prophylaxis of venous thromboembolism because they effectively interrupt this hypercoagulability. A personalized assessment of the thrombotic risk is essential for planning the duration and intensity of secondary prophylaxis. The occurrence of thrombosis outside a typical risk situation, an atypical localization and a family history of thrombosis indicate a thrombophilic state. In these cases, thrombophilia diagnostics are useful for extended risk assessment. If anti-phospholipid antibodies are detected, the risk of recurrence is particularly increased.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maize has many kernel colors, from white to dark black. However, research on the color and nutritional quality of the different varieties is limited. The color of the maize grain is an important characteristic. Colored maize is rich in nutrients, which have received attention for their role in diet-related chronic diseases and have different degrees of anti-stress protection for animal and human health. METHODS A comprehensive metabolome (LC-MS/MS) and transcriptome analysis was performed in this study to compare different colored maize varieties from the perspective of multiple recombination in order to study the nutritional value of maize with different colors and the molecular mechanism of color formation. RESULTS Maize kernels with diverse colors contain different types of health-promoting compounds, highlighting that different maize varieties can be used as functional foods according to human needs. Among them, red-purple and purple-black maize contain more flavonoids than white and yellow kernels. Purple-black kernels have a high content of amino acids and nucleotides, while red-purple kernels significantly accumulate sugar alcohols and lipids. CONCLUSION Our study can provide insights for improving people's diets and provide a theoretical basis for the study of food structure for chronic diseases.

Abstract
Hemodialysis, the most common modality of renal replacement therapy, is critically required to remove uremic toxins from the blood of patients with end-stage kidney disease. However, the chronic inflammation, oxidative stress as well as thrombosis induced by the long-term contact of hemoincompatible hollow-fiber membranes (HFMs) contribute to the increase in cardiovascular diseases and mortality in this patient population. This review first retrospectively analyzes the current clinical and laboratory research progress in improving the hemocompatibility of HFMs. Details on different HFMs currently in clinical use and their design are described. Subsequently, we elaborate on the adverse interactions between blood and HFMs, involving protein adsorption, platelet adhesion and activation, and the activation of immune and coagulation systems, and the focus is on how to improve the hemocompatibility of HFMs in these aspects. Finally, challenges and future perspectives for improving the hemocompatibility of HFMs are also discussed to promote the development and clinical application of new hemocompatible HFMs. Graphical Abstract

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Severe COVID-19 infections increase the risk of thrombotic events and Intensive Care Units reported increased extracorporeal circuit clotting (ECC) in COVID-19 patients with acute kidney injury. We wished to determine whether hemodialysis (HD) patients with COVID-19 also have increased risk of circuit clotting. METHODS We reviewed coagulation studies and HD records, 4 weeks before and after COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction detection in HD patients between April 2020 and June 2021. FINDINGS Sixty-eight (33.5%) of 203 HD patients with COVID-19, 65% male, mean age 64.9 ± 15.3 years, experienced some circuit clotting, and no clotting recorded prior to positive test results. In those who experienced ECC, prothrombin, activated partial thromboplastin or thrombin times were not different, whereas median factor VIII (273 [168-419] vs. 166 [139-225] IU/dl, p < 0.001), D-dimers (2654 [1381-6019] vs. 1351 [786-2334] ng/ml, p < 0.05), and fibrinogen (5.6 ± 1.4 vs. 4.9 ± 1.4 g/L, p < 0.05) were greater. Antithrombin (94 [83-112] vs. 89 [84-103] IU/dl), protein C (102 [80-130] vs. 86 [76-106] IU/dl), protein S (65 [61-75] vs. 65 [52-79] IU/dl) and platelet counts (193 [138-243] vs. 174 [138-229] × 109 /L) did not differ. On multivariable logistic analysis, circuit clotting was associated with log factor VIII (odds ratio [OR] 14.8 (95% confidence limits [95% CL] 1.12-19.6), p = 0.041), fibrinogen (OR 1.57 [95% CL 1.14-21.7], p = 0.006) and log D dimer (OR 4.8 [95% CL 1.16-12.5], p = 0.028). DISCUSSION Extracorporeal circuit clotting was increased within 4 weeks of testing positive for COVID-19. Clotting was associated with increased factor VIII, fibrinogen and D-dimer, suggesting that the risk of circuit clotting was related to the inflammatory response to COVID-19.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with COVID-19 infection are at increased risk of thrombosis. We wished to determine whether this was is due to an increase in prothrombotic or reduction in anticoagulant factors, and whether heparin would be an appropriate anticoagulant. METHODS We measured routine coagulation and prothrombtic factors in dialysis patients after a positive COVID-19 test between March 2020 -April 2021. RESULTS Routine coagulation tests were measured in 227 dialysis patients, 148 males (65.2%), median age 67.5 (53.8-77.0) years. The international normalised ratio was prolonged in 11.5%, activated partial thromboplastin time in 48.5%, thrombin time in 57%. Factor VIII was increased in 59.1%, fibrinogen in 73.8%, and D-dimer 95.5%. Protein C was reduced in 15.3%, protein S in 28%, and antithrombin (AT) in 12.1%. Two patients were Lupus anticoagulant positive , and two Factor VLeiden positive. Factor VIII levels increased with clinical disease; outpatients 159 (136-179) IU/dL, hospitalised but not ventilated 228 (167-311) IU, ventilated 432 (368-488) IU/dL (p<0.01). Overall 75% had an AT level ≥ 88 IU/dL (reference range 79-106), but only 11.7% of non-hospitalised patientscompared to 45% of those who died, p<0.01, Fibrinogen,D-dimers, proteins S or C did not differ with clinical disease severity, whether patients required hospital admission or not and between survivors and those who died. CONCLUSION COVID-19 dialysis patients have increased levels of fibrinogen and D-Dimers, but only factor VIII levels in the clotting profile increased with clinical disease severity increasing systemic hypercoagulability. AT concentrations are maintained and as such should not compromise anticoagulation with heparins.

Abstract
The direct synthesis of isocoumarin skeletons has been realized through the Rh(III)-catalyzed [3 + 3] annulation of sulfoxonium ylides with iodonium carbenes. The synthetic protocol was constructed efficiently with broad functional group tolerance and mild reaction conditions. This reaction can be formally viewed as the result of C-H activation, carbene insertion and nucleophilic addition processes. Furthermore, the further conversions of the product and gram-scale reactions were also demonstrate to support the effectiveness of the synthesis protocol.

Abstract
Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a common pathogen causing respiratory infections in children and adults. In addition to respiratory diseases, Mycoplasma pneumoniae is also involved in numerous extrapulmonary diseases. Thrombosis is an extrapulmonary manifestation associated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection. In recent years, an increasing number of case reports have been published identifying thrombosis secondary to Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection. In the present study, the available relevant literature in English available on PubMed, Medline and Web of Science was consulted. The results of the present study demonstrated that in patients with thrombosis caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection, some of the factors causing thrombosis are transient and some are due to hereditary thrombophilia. Following timely treatment, the majority of patients recovered completely but some patients had a poor prognosis. The present review focuses on the pathogenesis, clinical features, treatment and prognosis of this crucial issue, which contributes toward the understanding of the disease.

Abstract
This review contains the data concerning the mechanisms of spontaneous fibrinolysis in pulmonary vessels and possibilities of its acceleration in pulmonary embolism. The spontaneous fibrinolysis system is known to be sequential and multifactorial, with the interaction of accelerators (t-PA and u-PA) and inhibitors (alpha-2-antiplasmin, PAI-1, TAFI). The fibrinolytic processes take place in case of prevailing reactions of accelerating factors over inhibiting ones. The endothelium of pulmonary vessels possesses pronounced antithrombogenic and profibrinolytic properties, therefore, the processes of fibrinolysis in the pulmonary vascular bed normally occur more intensively than in the vessels of the systemic circulation. The membrane proteins of the endothelium annexins A2 activate plasminogen, whereas thrombomodulin inhibits the activity of PAI-1. The main approaches to increase the fibrinolysis intensity in conditions of pulmonary embolism may be aimed at elevating the activity of fibrinolytic enzymes (enhancing the synthesis of annexins A2, the use of NMDA-receptor antagonists) and suppressing its inhibitors (the use of monoclonal antibodies to alpha-2-antiplasmin, as well as plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI). Promising directions for future research can be the synthesis of a new generation of tissue-type plasminogen activators, and investigations of the possibility of clinical application of antithrombin and thrombomodulin, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and cortisol antagonists. To meet these challenges, it is necessary to develop new models of venous thrombosis and acute pulmonary embolism in different animal species, with the assessment of the changes in the venous haemodynamics and pulmonary microcirculation on the background of administration of a new class of fibrinolytic agents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) can induce accelerated silicosis (AS), a form of silicosis that is more progressive and severe form of silicosis. In this project we aimed to assess processes of silicosis in rats exposed to RCS with focus on the regulation of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs). RESULTS The results showed that RCS induced acute inflammatory response as indicated by the appearance of inflammatory cells in the lung from the first day and peaked on day 7 of exposure. The fibroblasts appeared along with the inflammatory cells decreasing gradually on day 14. Extensive fibrosis appeared in the lung tissue, and silicon nodules were getting larger on day 28. Interestingly, the number of altered lncRNAs increased with the exposure time with 193, 424, 455, 421 and 682 lncRNAs on day 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28 after exposure, respectively. We obtained 285 lncRNAs with five significant temporal expression patterns whose expressions might correlate with severity of silicosis. KEGG analysis showed that lncRNAs from short time-series expression miner (STEM)-derived data mainly involved in 17 pathways such as complement and coagulation cascades. CONCLUSIONS The differential expression profiles of lncRNAs may be potential biomarkers in silicosis through modulating expressions of their relevant genes in lungs of rat and thus warrant further investigation.

Abstract
The association between coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia and venous thrombotic disorders is still unclear. We assessed the association between COVID-19 infection-related pneumonia and proximal deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) in a cohort of patients admitted to our hospital during the European outbreak in the front line of Cremona, Lombardy. In a single-center cross-sectional study, all patients hospitalized for more than 5 days in Internal Medicine Department with confirmed COVID-19 pneumonia received 2-point compressive ultrasound assessment (CUS) of the leg vein system during a single day. Ninety-four percent of patients received enoxaparin as standard pharmacological prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism. The presence of DVT was defined as incompressibility of popliteal or common femoral vein. Out of 121 patients with COVID-19 pneumonia (mean age 71.8, 66.3% males) hospitalized on March 31st, 70 stayed in hospital for over 5 days and 66 of them underwent CUS of deep venous system of the legs. The presence of asymptomatic DVT was found in 9 patients (13.6%). No symptomatic DVT was found. Patients with DVT showed mean age = 75.7 years, mean D-dimer levels = 4.02 ng/ml and all of them received enoxaparin for thromboprophylaxis, except one. Computed tomography pulmonary angiogram confirmed pulmonary embolism in five patients. One every seven patients with COVID-19-related pneumonia, hospitalized for more than 5 days, had asymptomatic proximal DVT and half of them had confirmed PE despite standard pharmacological thromboprophylaxis. This observational study suggests the need of an active surveillance through CUS in patients hospitalized with acute SARS-COV-2 and underline the need of a more intense thromboprophylaxis.

Abstract
Platelets have been proved to exacerbate influenza infection and its complications. Inhibition of platelet activation may be a feasible method for preventing severe infection and secondary acute lung injury (ALI). Isofraxidin (IFD) is a natural coumarin isolated from the plants Sarcandra glabra and Siberian ginseng, and exerts anticancer, antioxidant and antiinflammatory effects. In the present study, we examined the therapeutic effects of IFD in ADP- or arachidonic acid (AA)-induced platelet aggregation model and in influenza A virus (IAV)-induced ALI mouse model. The results showed that IFD significantly inhibited platelet aggregation induced by ADP and AA in vitro in a concentration-dependent manner as well as the release of soluble P-selectin and platelet factor 4. Moreover, IFD significantly relieved IAV-induced lung inflammation, reduced the expressions of platelet activation biomarkers (P-selectin and CD61), decreased the serum levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and MIP-2, suppressed peripheral platelet aggregation and prolonged the survival time of infected mice. The western blotting results also demonstrated that IFD reduced the phosphorylation levels of PI3K, AKT and p38 in the activated platelets stimulated by ADP and IAV infection. But IFD did not have any effects on IAV replication. It indicated that IFD ameliorated IAV-induced severe lung damage and lethal infection by suppressing platelet aggregation via regulating PI3K/AKT and MAPK pathways.

Abstract
The term varicose vein refers to the twisted and swollen vein visible under the skin surface which occurs most commonly in the leg. Epidemiological studies report a varying percentage of incidences from 2 to 56% in men and <1-60% in women. Venous insufficiency is most often caused by the damage to the valves and walls of the veins. The mechanism of varicose vein formation is complex. It is, however, based on hypotensive blood vessels, hypoxia, and other mechanisms associated with inflammation. This work describes mechanisms related to the formation and development of the varicose vein. It discusses risk factors, pathogenesis of chronic venous disease, markers of the epithelial and leukocyte activation, state of hypoxia and inflammation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and oxidative stress. Additionally, this paper describes substances of plant origin used in the treatment of venous insufficiency. It also considers the structure of the molecules, their properties, and their mechanisms of action, the structure-activity relationship and chemical properties of flavonoids and other substances. The flavonoids include quercetin derivatives, micronized purified flavonoid fraction (Daflon), natural pine bark extract (Pycnogenol), and others such as triterpene saponine, extracts from Ruscus aculeatus and Centella asiatica, Ginkgo biloba extract, coumarin dereivatives that are used in chronic venous insufficiency. Flavonoids are natural substances found in plants, including fruits, vegetables, flowers, and others. They are important to the circulatory system and critical to blood vessels and the blood flow. Additionally, they have antioxidant, antiinflammatory properties.

Abstract
Background Pulmonary vein antrum isolation has proven to be a useful strategy for radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) of atrial fibrillation (AF) worldwide. Anticoagulation therapies are necessary to avoid thromboembolic events before, during, and after RFCA of AF. During the RFCA procedure for AF, it is recommended that the activated coagulation time be maintained between 300 s and 400 s using heparin as an anticoagulation therapy. Case summary An 81-year-old man with symptomatic and drug-refractory paroxysmal AF underwent RFCA. We found that he had a severe heparin resistance during the RFCA procedure, and heparin had little effect on him. Thus, a direct thrombin inhibitor, Argatroban Hydrate®, was used instead of heparin for anticoagulation therapy during the procedure. Finally, the AF was successfully treated by RFCA without any complications. With a post-procedural inspection, we found that he had a Type-1 antithrombin III (AT-III) deficiency. Discussion Atrial fibrillation is the most common clinical arrhythmia and is associated with significant clinical morbidity and increased mortality. An AT-III deficiency is a well-known autosomal dominant hereditary disease and congenital blood coagulation abnormality occurring in about 1:500–5000 live births that may sometimes cause thrombophilia. Thus, the physicians may occasionally come across patients with an AT-III deficiency in real-world clinical practice, even though they have no history of thrombophilia. Argatroban Hydrate® may be effective and feasible for anticoagulation therapy during the RFCA procedure of AF in patients with heparin resistance such as in this present case.
