Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Innovative Sorbents in Restoring Enzymatic Activity of Soil Contaminated with Bisphenol A (BPA)

As part of the multifaceted strategies developed to shape the common environmental policy, considerable attention is now being paid to assessing the degree of environmental degradation in soil under xenobiotic pressure. Bisphenol A (BPA) has only been marginally investigated in this ecosystem context. Therefore, research was carried out to determine the biochemical properties of soils contaminated with BPA at two levels of contamination: 500 mg and 1000 mg BPA kg-1 d.m. of soil. Reliable biochemical indicators of soil changes, whose activity was determined in the pot experiment conducted, were used: dehydrogenases, catalase, urease, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, arylsulfatase, and β-glucosidase. Using the definition of soil health as the ability to promote plant growth, the influence of BPA on the growth and development of Zea mays, a plant used for energy production, was also tested. As well as the biomass of aerial parts and roots, the leaf greenness index (SPAD) of Zea mays was also assessed. A key aspect of the research was to identify those of the six remediating substances-molecular sieve, zeolite, sepiolite, starch, grass compost, and fermented bark-whose use could become common practice in both environmental protection and agriculture. Exposure to BPA revealed the highest sensitivity of dehydrogenases, urease, and acid phosphatase and the lowest sensitivity of alkaline phosphatase and catalase to this phenolic compound. The enzyme response generated a reduction in the biochemical fertility index (BA21) of 64% (500 mg BPA) and 70% (1000 mg BPA kg-1 d.m. of soil). The toxicity of BPA led to a drastic reduction in root biomass and consequently in the aerial parts of Zea mays. Compost and molecular sieve proved to be the most effective in mitigating the negative effect of the xenobiotic on the parameters discussed. The results obtained are the first research step in the search for further substances with bioremediation potential against both soil and plants under BPA pressure.

Evaluation of the Usefulness of Sorbents in the Remediation of Soil Exposed to the Pressure of Cadmium and Cobalt

An undesirable side effect of economic progress is increasingly severe pollution with heavy metals, responsible for the degradation of ecosystems, including soil resources. Hence, this research focused on examining six adsorbents in order to distinguish a reactive mineral with the highest capacity to remediate soils contaminated with heavy metals. To this end, the soil was polluted with Co²⁺ and Cd²⁺ by applying the metals in concentrations of 100 mg kg^-1 d.m. The extent of soil equilibrium disturbances was assessed by evaluating the response of the soil microbiome, activity of seven soil enzymes, and the yields of Helianthus annuus L. Six sorbents were evaluated: a molecular sieve, expanded clay (ExClay), halloysite, zeolite, sepiolite and biochar. Co²⁺ and Cd²⁺ proved to be significant inhibitors of the soil's microbiological and biochemical parameters. Organotrophic bacteria among the analysed groups of microorganisms and dehydrogenases among the soil enzymes were most sensitive to the effects of the metals. Both metals significantly distorted the growth and development of sunflower, with Co²⁺ having a stronger adverse impact on the synthesis of chlorophyll. The molecular sieve and biochar were the sorbents that stimulated the multiplication of microorganisms and enzymatic activity in the contaminated soil. The activity of enzymes was also stimulated significantly by zeolite and sepiolite, while the growth of Helianthus annuus L. biomass was stimulated by the molecular sieve, which can all be considered the most useful reactive materials in the remediation of soils exposed to Co²⁺ and Cd²⁺.

Mitigation of the Adverse Impact of Copper, Nickel, and Zinc on Soil Microorganisms and Enzymes by Mineral Sorbents

Despite numerous studies on the influence of heavy metals on soil health, the search for effective, eco-friendly, and economically viable remediation substances is far from over. This encouraged us to carry out a study under strictly controlled conditions to test the effects of Cu²⁺, Ni²⁺, and Zn²⁺ added to soil in amounts of 150 mg·kg⁻¹ d.m. of soil on the soil microbiome, on the activity of two oxidoreductases and five hydrolases, and on the growth and development of the sunflower Helianthus annunus L. The remediation substances were a molecular sieve, halloysite, sepiolite, expanded clay, zeolite, and biochar. It has been demonstrated that the most severe turbulences in the soil microbiome, its activity, and the growth of Helianthus annunus L. were caused by Ni²⁺, followed by Cu²⁺, and the mildest negative effect was produced by Zn²⁺. The adverse impact of heavy metals on the soil microbiome and its activity was alleviated by the applied sorbents. Their application also contributed to the increased biomass of plants, which is significant for the successful phytoextraction of these metals from soil. Irrespective of which property was analysed, sepiolite can be recommended for the remediation of soil polluted with Ni²⁺ and zeolite—for soil polluted with Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺. Both sorbents mitigated to the highest degree disturbances caused by the tested metals in the soil environment.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and pistachio husk biochar combination reduces Ni distribution in mungbean plant and improves plant antioxidants and soil enzymes

Soil pollution with nickel (Ni) casts detrimental effects on the quality of crops. Low-cost amendments can restrict Ni mobility in soil and its uptake by the plants. In this pot experiment, the effects of pistachio husk biochar (PHB) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on the distribution of Ni in mung bean and its bioavailability in Ni-spiked soil were evaluated. Plant parameters like Ni plant height, root dry weight, shoot dry weight, grain yield, chlorophyll contents, oxidative stress, Ni distribution in the roots, shoot, and grain, as well as the nutritional potential of grains, were measured on plants grown on Ni-contaminated soil amended or not (control) with AMF, zeolite (ZE), PHB, ZE + AMF, and PHB + AMF. Moreover, DTPA (diethylenetriamine pentaacetate)-extractable Ni in the soil, microbial biomass carbon (MBC), total glomalin (TG), extractable glomalin (EG), mycorrhizal root colonization (MRC), and the activities of soil enzymes (i.e. urease, acid phosphatase, and catalase) were also assessed after the plant harvest. With few exceptions, all treatments had significant effects on plant and soil parameters. The PHB + AMF treatment showed the topmost significant increment in plant physical parameters while reducing the Ni distribution in plant parts and oxidative injury. Based on these findings, it is proposed that PHB + AMF treatment can reduce Ni distribution and oxidative stress in mung bean plants and improve the biochemical compounds in grain.

Chitosan with Bentonite and Biochar in Ni-Affected Soil Reduces Grain Ni Concentrations, Improves Soil Enzymes and Grain Quality in Lentil

Ecological and human health risks associated with Ni-affected soils are one of the major attention seeking issues nowadays. The current investigation is based on the usage of biochar (BR), chitosan (CN), bentonite (BE), and their mixture to immobilize Ni in a Ni-polluted soil and accordingly contracted Ni distribution in lentil plant parts, improved grain nutritional quality, antioxidant defense system, and soil enzymatic activities. The soil was initially amended with CN, BE, and BR and later lentil was grown in this soil in pots. Results depicted the highest significance of BE+CN treatment in terms of reducing the Ni distribution in the roots, shoots, grain, and DTPA-extractable fractions, relative to control treatment. Contrarily, the BR+CN treatment displayed the minimum oxidative stress and the utmost plant growth, chlorophyll contents in the leaves, relative water content (RWC), micronutrient concentrations, and grain biochemistry. The BR+CN indicated the highest activities of soil enzymes. Based on the results, we recommend BE+CN treatment to reduce the Ni distribution in the lentil plant. Although, improvement in plant growth, grain quality, soil enzymes, and a significant reduction in plant oxidative stress can only be gained with BR+CN.

Response of soil microorganisms and enzymes to the foliar application of Helicur 250 EW fungicide on Horderum vulgare L

The use of fungicides bears the risk of many undesirable outcomes that are manifested in, among other things, changes in the structure and activity of microorganisms. This study aimed at determining the effect of a Helicur 250 EW preparation, used to protect crops against fungal diseases, on the microbiological and biochemical activity of soil and on the development of Horderum vulgare L. The fungicide was sprayed on leaves of spring barley in the following doses (per active substance, i.e. tebuconazole, TEB): 0.046, 0.093, 0.139, 1.395, and 2.790 mg TEB plant^-1. The following indices were analyzed in the study: index of microorganisms resistance (RS) to the effects of fungicide, microorganisms colony development index (CD), microorganisms ecophysiological diversity index (EP), genetic diversity of bacteria, enzymatic activity, and effect of the fungicide on spring barley development (IF_H). The most susceptible to the effects of the fungicide turned out to be fungi. The metagenomic analysis demonstrated that the bacterial community differed in terms of structure and percentage contribution in the soil exposed to the fungicide from the control soil even at the Phylum level. However, Proteobacteria appeared to be the prevailing taxon in both soils. Bacillus arabhattai, B. soli, and B. simplex occurred exclusively in the control soil, whereas Ramlibacter tataounensis, Azospirillum palatum, and Kaistobacter terrae - exclusively in the soil contaminated with the fungicide. Helicur 250 EW suppressed activities of all soil enzymes except for arylsulfatase. In addition, it proved to be a strong inhibitor of spring barley growth and development.

Adsorption of cadmium by live and dead biomass of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have been extensively investigated in combination remediation with plants in heavy metal contaminated soil. However, being biosorbent, few studies of live and dead cells of PGPR have been undertaken. Meanwhile, the application of live or dead biomass for the removal of heavy metals continues to be debated. Therefore, this study uses living and non-living biosorbents of Cupriavidus necator GX_5, Sphingomonas sp. GX_15, and Curtobacterium sp. GX_31 to compare their Cd(ii) adsorption capacities by SEM-EDX, FTIR, and adsorption experiments. In the present study, whether the cells were living or dead and whatever the initial Cd(ii) concentration was, removal efficiency and adsorption capacity can be arranged as GX_31 > GX_15 > GX_5 (p < 0.05). However, removal efficiency in live and dead biosorbents was quite different and it greatly affected by the initial Cd(ii) concentrations. The dead cells exhibited a higher adsorption capacity than the live cells of GX_31. Nevertheless, for GX_5 and GX_15, the loading capacity of the non-living biomass was stronger than that of the living biomass at 20 mg L⁻¹ of Cd(ii), but the capacity was similar at 100 mg L⁻¹ of Cd(ii). Minor changes of spectra were found after autoclaving and it seemed that more functional groups of the dead biosorbent were involved in Cd(ii) binding by FTIR analysis, which also illustrated that the hydroxyl, amino, amide, and carboxyl groups played an important role in complexation with Cd(ii). Based on these findings, we concluded that the dead cells were more potent for Cd(ii) remediation, especially for GX_31.
