Biodegradation of azo dye-containing wastewater by activated sludge: a critical review

Refractory wastewater shapes bacterial assembly and key taxa during long-term acclimatization

Bacterial assembly and key taxa during long-term acclimatization in refractory wastewater treatment systems is of paramount importance for optimizing system performance and improving management strategies. Therefore, this study employed high-throughput sequencing, coupled with machine learning models and statistical analysis approaches, to comprehensively elucidate key features of bacterial communities and assembly processes in pesticide wastewater treatment systems. A nine-month monitoring showed substantial variation in diversity and composition of bacterial community between two interconnected biological treatment units (designated as BA and PA). Dynamics of bacterial communities in both units were similar. Moreover, water quality played crucial roles in regulating the bacterial community structure of activated sludge, which were primarily driven by deterministic patterns. Homogeneous selection contributed to 62.85 % and 64.43 % of the variations in BA and PA samples, respectively. Additionally, network analysis revealed significant modularity in bacterial compositions in both groups. Linear regression analysis identified major bacterial modules associated with metabolism and degradation functions. Notably, Module 2 in PA samples has significant positive correlations with functions related to metabolism of nucleotide, amino acid, and xenobiotics, as well as benzoate degradation. Furthermore, key taxa in ecological modules identified by Random Forest model, such as Pseudomonas, Sphingobium, and PHOS-HE28, were dominant populations with metabolism and degradation functions. Particularly, Sphingobium, appeared to be a potential multifunctional degrading bacterium, related to amino acid and xenobiotics metabolism, as well as fatty acid, valine, leucine, isoleucine, fluorobenzoate, and aminobenzoate degradation. These findings are important for developing operating strategies to maintain stable system performance during refractory wastewater treatment.

Misdiagnosis Diagnosis of Pneumocystis Pneumonia as Chemical Pneumonitis

Background

Auxiliaries, a mixed chemicals, for printing and dyeing characterized by their diverse range and complex chemical compositions are commonly utilized in the textile industry. These chemicals can lead to environmental contamination and pose health risks to humans.

Case Description

A 29-year-old man who worked in a printing and dyeing factory in Suzhou, China, reported having tightness in his chest and coughing. Despite seeking medical treatment at several hospitals, the initial diagnosis remained elusive. High-resolution chest CT scans showed multifocal lesions in both lungs. The patient had no significant medical history, and the respiratory symptoms only surfaced after exposure to dyeing auxiliaries. Physicians initially suspected chemical pneumonitis due to occupational exposure. However, a subsequent evaluation at a hospital specializing in occupational diseases led to a diagnosis of AIDS and pneumocystis pneumonia.

Conclusion

This case underscores the importance of comprehensive clinical diagnosis to avoid biases and reduce the incidence of misdiagnosis.

Mitigation of biofouling in membrane bioreactors by quorum-quenching bacteria during the treatment of metal-containing wastewater

Quorum quenching (QQ) is an efficient way to mitigate membrane biofouling in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) during wastewater treatment. A QQ bacterium, Lysinibacillus sp. A4, was isolated and used to mitigate biofouling in an MBR during the treatment of wastewater containing metals. A QQ enzyme (named AilY) was cloned from A4 and identified as a metallo-β-lactamase-like lactonase. The QQ activity of A4 and that of Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) overexpressing AilY could be promoted by Fe2+, Mn2+, and Zn2+ while remaining unaffected by other metals tested. The two bacteria effectively mitigated biofouling by reducing the transmembrane pressure from around 30 to 20 kPa without negative influence on the COD, NH4+-N, or total phosphorus of the effluent. The relative abundance of Lysinibacillus sp. A4 increased greatly from 0.04 to 8.29% in the MBR with metal-containing wastewater, suggesting that Lysinibacillus sp. A4 could multiply quickly and adapt to this environment. Taken together, the findings suggested that A4 could tolerate metal to a certain degree, and this property could allow A4 to adapt well to metal-containing wastewater, making it a valuable strain for mitigating biofouling in MBR during the treatment of metal-containing wastewater.

Simultaneous removal of antibiotic resistance genes and improved dewatering ability of waste activated sludge by Fe(II)-activated persulfate oxidation

Waste activated sludge properties vary widely with different regions due to the difference in living standards and geographical distribution, making a big challenge to developing a universally effective sludge dewatering technique. The Fe(II)-activated persulfate (S2O82-) oxidation process shows excellent ability to disrupt sludge cells and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and release bound water from sludge flocs. In this study, the discrepancies in the physicochemical characteristics of sludge samples from seven representative cities in China (e.g., dewaterability, EPS composition, surface charge, microbial community, relative abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), etc.) were investigated, and the role of Fe(II)-S2O82- oxidation in enhancing removal of antibiotic resistance genes and dewatering ability were explored. The results showed significant differences between the EPS distribution and chemical composition of sludge samples due to different treatment processes, effluent sources, and regions. The Fe(II)-S2O82- oxidation pretreatment had a good enhancement of sludge dewatering capacity (up to 76 %). Microbial analysis showed that the microbial community in each sludge varied significantly depending on the types of wastewater, the wastewater treatment processes, and the regions, but Fe(II)-S2O82- oxidation was able to attack and rupture the sludge zoogloea indiscriminately. Genetic analysis further showed that a considerable number of ARGs were detected in all of these sludge samples and that Fe(II)-S2O82- oxidation was effective in removing ARGs by higher than 90 %. The highly active radicals (e.g., SO4-·, ·OH) produced in this process caused drastic damage to sludge microbial cells and DNA stability while liberating the EPS/cell-bound water. Co-occurrence network analysis highlighted a positive correlation between population distribution and ARGs abundance, while variations in microbial communities were linked to regional differences in living standards and level of economic development. Despite these variations, the Fe(II)-S2O82- oxidation consistently achieved excellent performance in both ARGs removal and sludge dewatering. The significant modularity of associations between different microbial communities also confirms its ability to reduce horizontal gene transfer (HGT) by scavenging microbes.

Advances in Polyoxometalates as Electron Mediators for Photocatalytic Dye Degradation

The increasing concerns over the environment and the growing demand for sustainable water treatment technologies have sparked substantial interest in the field of photocatalytic dye removal. Polyoxometalates (POMs), known for their intricate metal-oxygen anion clusters, have received considerable attention due to their versatile structures, compositions, and efficient facilitation of photo-induced electron transfers. This paper provides an overview of the ongoing research progress in the realm of photocatalytic dye degradation utilizing POMs and their derivatives. The details encompass the compositions of catalysts, catalytic efficacy, and light absorption propensities, and the photocatalytic mechanisms inherent to POM-based materials for dye degradation are exhaustively expounded upon. This review not only contributes to a better understanding of the potential of POM-based materials in photocatalytic dye degradation, but also presents the advancements and future prospects in this domain of environmental remediation.

Physiological and transcriptome profiling of Chlorella sorokiniana: A study on azo dye wastewater decolorization

Over decades, synthetic dyes have become increasingly dominated by azo dyes posing a significant environmental risk due to their toxicity. Microalgae-based systems may offer an alternative for treatment of azo dye effluents to conventional physical-chemical methods. Here, microalgae were tested to decolorize industrial azo dye wastewater (ADW). Chlorella sorokiniana showed the highest decolorization efficiency in a preliminary screening test. Subsequently, the optimization of the experimental design resulted in 70% decolorization in a photobioreactor. Tolerance of this strain was evidenced using multiple approaches (growth and chlorophyll content assays, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and antioxidant level measurements). Raman microspectroscopy was employed for the quantification of ADW-specific compounds accumulated by the microalgal biomass. Finally, RNA-seq revealed the transcriptome profile of C. sorokiniana exposed to ADW for 72 h. Activated DNA repair and primary metabolism provided sufficient energy for microalgal growth to overcome the adverse toxic conditions. Furthermore, several transporter genes, oxidoreductases-, and glycosyltransferases-encoding genes were upregulated to effectively sequestrate and detoxify the ADW. This work demonstrates the potential utilization of C. sorokiniana as a tolerant strain for industrial wastewater treatment, emphasizing the regulation of its molecular mechanisms to cope with unfavorable growth conditions.

Silver Nanoparticle-Intercalated Cotton Fiber for Catalytic Degradation of Aqueous Organic Dyes for Water Pollution Mitigation

Azo dyes are commonly used in textile color processing for their wide array of vibrant colors. However, in recent years these dyes have become of concern in wastewater management given their toxicity to humans and the environment. In the present work, researchers remediated water contaminated with azo dyes using silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) intercalated within cotton fabric as a catalyst, for their enhanced durability and reusability, in a reductive degradation method. Three azo dyes—methyl orange (MO), Congo red (CR), and Chicago Sky Blue 6B (CSBB)—were investigated. The azo degradation was monitored by UV/vis spectroscopy, degradation capacity, and turnover frequency (TOF). The Ag NP−cotton catalyst exhibited excellent degradation capacity for the dyes, i.e., MO (96.4% in 30 min), CR (96.5% in 18.5 min), and CSBB (99.8% in 21 min), with TOFs of 0.046 min−1, 0.082 min−1, and 0.056 min−1, respectively, using a 400 mg loading of catalyst for 100 mL of 25 mg L−1 dye. To keep their high reusability while maintaining high catalytic efficiency of >95% degradation after 10 cycles, Ag NPs immobilized within cotton fabric have promising potential as eco-friendly bio-embedded catalysts.

Microbial Degradation of Azo Dyes: Approaches and Prospects for a Hazard-Free Conversion by Microorganisms

Azo dyes have become a staple in various industries, as colors play an important role in consumer choices. However, these dyes pose various health and environmental risks. Although different wastewater treatments are available, the search for more eco-friendly options persists. Bioremediation utilizing microorganisms has been of great interest to researchers and industries, as the transition toward greener solutions has become more in demand through the years. This review tackles the health and environmental repercussions of azo dyes and its metabolites, available biological approaches to eliminate such dyes from the environment with a focus on the use of different microorganisms, enzymes that are involved in the degradation of azo dyes, and recent trends that could be applied for the treatment of azo dyes.
