Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental sleep medicine education (DSME) should be emphasised in postgraduate orthodontic training; however, there appears to be no clear guideline for its implementation into the curriculum. OBJECTIVE The aim was to investigate the current status of DSME as well as its feasibility and implementation in postgraduate orthodontic programmes. METHODS A structured interview with predetermined response options was chosen as a data collection method to gather relevant information from representatives of all accredited postgraduate orthodontic programmes in Thailand. These interviews were conducted online via the Cisco Webex Meeting platform. A combination of data analysis techniques was employed to achieve a thorough comprehension of the research findings, including descriptive statistics, quantitative content analysis, thematic analysis, and alignment analysis. RESULTS All participating programmes reported the inclusion of DSME in their curricula. A didactic approach was adopted by all programmes. However, only 2 out of 7 programmes offered clinical sessions for their students. Several challenges in implementing DSME within orthodontic programmes were identified, including a shortage of expertise and limited patient access. The participants also suggested that knowledge and resource sharing amongst institutions could serve as a potential solution to enhance the feasibility of DSME. CONCLUSIONS This research highlighted the significant disparities and inadequacy of DSME within postgraduate orthodontic programmes in Thailand due to various challenges. Consequently, there is a compelling need to place greater emphasis on DSME and establish a national-level standardisation within orthodontic programmes. This effort is essential for enhancing the awareness and competency of orthodontists in the field of DSME.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dental sleep medicine (DSM) is an emerging discipline that studies the oral and maxillofacial causes and consequences of sleep-related problems. DSM is of upmost importance given the major medical challenge it represents. Therefore, to verify whether the future generation of dentists would be ready to face this challenge, the main objective of this study was to assess the degree of involvement of the French dental schools in teaching DSM at the undergraduate level. MATERIALS AND METHODS All 16 dental schools in France were asked to participate in the study by answering to an online survey concerning the DSM curriculum during the 2018-2019 academic year. The survey was addressed to the head of the dental school and/or to relevant course coordinators and contained 10 questions related to the type, content and amount of DSM teaching to undergraduate dental students. RESULTS Nine of the 16 (56.2%) French dental schools responded to the questionnaire. All these nine reported the inclusion of DSM in their undergraduate curriculum. The total average hours dedicated to teaching DSM was 5.6 h (SD 4.2; range 1-15 h). Seven of the 9 dental schools spent most of their DSM curriculum teaching time in the fifth year. All of them reviewed obstructive sleep apnoea and sleep-related bruxism and covered some topics related to therapies for sleep-related breathing disorders, such as the use of oral appliance. CONCLUSION The results of this survey showed that, although the average hourly volume is relatively high, the DSM teaching in French dental schools appeared to be non-standardised, heterogeneous and often lacunar. It is therefore essential to develop a common curriculum and implement it in all dental schools to provide undergraduate students a comprehensive and updated teaching in DSM.

Abstract
Abstract
Introduction: Despite the serious health implications associated with obstructive sleep apnoea, the condition remains under-diagnosed. This study aims to evaluate the awareness of the condition amongst the Australian community.
Methods: A total of 2016 respondents recruited from a web-based panel completed an online questionnaire which assessed awareness and experience of obstructive sleep apnoea and sleep-disordered breathing. The association between the level of awareness and various socio-demographic variables was analysed using uni- and multivariate analyses.
Results: The results of the questionnaire indicated that 50% and 70% of participants were unaware of adult and paediatric obstructive sleep apnoea. Socio-demographic variables including age, annual household income and education level significantly influenced a participant’s level of awareness. Approximately 8.3% of the participants had previously been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnoea. However, 65% of participants exhibiting symptoms of daytime sleepiness had not sought health care. Paediatric sleep apnoea had been previously diagnosed in 7.1% of children residing in participant’s households but 49% of children with regular snoring had not been medically evaluated.
Conclusion: A deficiency exists in the awareness of sleep apnoea amongst the Australian general public. This is reflected in the discrepancy between the number of participants exhibiting potential symptoms and those who sought medical advice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMS) treat adult and pediatric patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Objective 1 assessed sleep apnea-related education, knowledge, and professional behavior of OMS residents in the United States. Objective 2 was to compare the responses of junior versus senior residents and residents in single- versus dual-degree programs. METHODS OMS residents in the United States received a recruitment email with a link to an anonymous online survey; 81 residents responded. The survey included 20 questions to assess respondents' OSA-related education, knowledge, attitudes, and professional behavior. RESULTS Respondents generally agreed that they had received OSA-related didactic-based education (5-point scale with "5" = agree strongly: mean = 3.62) and clinical training (mean = 3.75). Clinical and classroom educational gaps were identified in relation to treatment with oral appliances and hypoglossal nerve stimulation. The residents scored on average 10.38 out of 18 (58%) possible correct answer points for the knowledge questions. Findings about pediatric OSA suggest that only 43.8% of residents understand diagnostic criteria for pediatric OSA, with only 26.6% screening pediatric patients for OSA. A case analysis showed that only 1.5% of residents correctly identified an apnea-hypopnea index of 17 as moderate sleep apnea. CONCLUSION(S) This survey found knowledge gaps in several areas that can be improved upon. It identifies deficiency in objective knowledge about OSA among OMS residents and a specific lack of clinical training and confidence with hypoglossal nerve stimulation and management of pediatric patients with OSA. Junior and senior residents and single- and dual-degree residents showed no statistically significant differences in any category except senior residents in regard to surgical management of OSA, particularly with maxillomandibular advancement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common condition that can result in significant illness when untreated. Only 10%-20% of individuals with OSA are believed to be properly diagnosed. Consequently, dentists are encouraged to identify patients at high risk for OSA. The aim of this study was to determine whether patients in a dental school student clinic were referred for evaluation of OSA when appropriate. MATERIALS AND METHODS All patients 18 or older admitted to the College of Dentistry between July 2017 and March 2020 completed a medical history form. Data were extracted from their responses to determine a STOP-Bang score, as well as data regarding a previous diagnosis of OSA and a list of referrals. Students are expected to refer patients appropriately where there are indications of a high risk of undiagnosed disease. In the case of a sleep apnea evaluation, this would include any patient whose STOP-Bang score was 5 or greater, per the lecture on sleep disorders. For patients identified as high risk, notes and referral forms were reviewed to determine if the appropriate referral occurred. RESULTS Of the 21,312 new patients, 1098 (5.2%) were identified as high-risk for OSA. Of those, 398 (36%) had not been previously diagnosed with OSA. None of these 398 patients received a referral for further evaluation of OSA. CONCLUSION The rate of referral for further evaluation for patients deemed at high risk for OSA was inadequate. Continued education and changes to the electronic health record are needed to ensure those at high-risk for OSA are appropriately managed.

Abstract
Aims There is increasing recognition that sleep disturbances can affect lifestyle, economy and health. General dental practitioners (GDPs) can play a vital role in helping to identify at-risk patients through screening as well as aid in the management of these conditions. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of UK-based GDPs in relation to sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBDs).Material and methods A questionnaire was developed to assess GDPs' knowledge of SRBDs and their current practice in relation to the management of SRBDs, and identify the factors associated with improved knowledge and management. A volunteer sample was recruited from social media platforms and conference attendees.Results In total, 152 GDPs completed the questionnaire; 101 (66% [95% CI 59%,74%]) agreed that GDPs should ask their patients about sleep disorders, while only 82 (54% [95% CI 46%,62%]) confirmed that they actually asked their patients about the problem. On a 22-point knowledge scale, the mean score was 12.93 (95%CI 12.23, 13.63). Postgraduate education (F = 5.47; p = 0.001), increasing age (r = 0.23; p = 0.005) and GDP workplace (F = 4.98; p = 0.008) contributed to a higher knowledge score. GDPs were strongly in favour of having more information (N = 141; 93% [95% CI 87%,97%]).Conclusion Although GDPs' knowledge of SRBDs was better than anticipated, they clearly felt a need for further information and training. There is a compelling case to include this subject in the undergraduate dental curriculum.

Abstract
CITATION Sleep is a biological necessity, and insufficient sleep and untreated sleep disorders are detrimental for health, well-being, and public safety. Healthy People 2030 includes several sleep-related objectives with the goal to improve health, productivity, well-being, quality of life, and safety by helping people get enough sleep. In addition to adequate sleep duration, healthy sleep requires good quality, appropriate timing, regularity, and the absence of sleep disorders. It is the position of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) that sleep is essential to health. There is a significant need for greater emphasis on sleep health in education, clinical practice, inpatient and long-term care, public health promotion, and the workplace. More sleep and circadian research is needed to further elucidate the importance of sleep for public health and the contributions of insufficient sleep to health disparities. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The diagnosis and treatment of patients with sleep disorders are the most challenging issues in dentistry. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge among dental interns in Northern Jordan about sleep medicine and sleep disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study was performed using the Assessment of Sleep Knowledge in Medical Education (ASKME) questionnaire. The questionnaire was given to 88 dental interns (52 females and 36 males) in Northern Jordan. Chi-squared test was utilized for data analysis. RESULTS The mean score of the ASKME questionnaire was 12 out of 30 (40%). The majority of dental interns (88.6%) correctly answered ≤ 50% of the questions. No association was found between gender and score results. CONCLUSIONS Dental interns in Northern Jordan have a low level of knowledge about sleep medicine and sleep disorders. Dental faculties should provide courses related to sleep medicine throughout undergraduate education.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To review the knowledge, attitude, and clinical practice of dentists and dental specialists toward obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). METHODS A literature search was performed on PubMed and ScienceDirect databases. Peer-reviewed English publications were reviewed. No time limit was applied. RESULTS Four articles were included for the review. Years in the profession, specialist training, and gender were associated with the level of knowledge about OSA. Weight control was the most recognizable treatment for patients with OSA. Dentists agreed that OSA is a life-threatening disease, and they could be involved in detecting and treating OSA. Most dentists had no clinical experience of managing patients with OSA. CONCLUSION Dentists had a certain level of knowledge about OSA and were willing to deal with OSA. Abstract
Dental sleep medicine is a discipline that includes conditions such as sleep breathing disorders (eg snoring and sleep apnoea), sleep bruxism, orofacial pain and sleep-related complaints, and to some extent gastro-oesophageal reflux disorder and/or insomnia. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a life-threatening condition that dentists need to identify and manage when indicated in order to increase patient well-being and to be taken in consideration in the dental curriculum. The main objective of this paper is to highlight the relevance of dental sleep medicine in the context of dental education, and to discuss potential educational content for integration in the dental curriculum with a focus on OSA, a condition that is not yet integrated in many dental training curricula around the world.

Abstract
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a major health problem which causes blood oxygen desaturation that may initiate a cascade of events via inflammatory cytokines and adrenocorticotrophic hormone that may have impact upon quality of life and lead to potential life-threatening events. Even though OSA affects an increasing number of individuals, the role of dental practitioners in recognition, screening and management has not developed accordingly. The goal of this article was to provide updated information to dental practitioners on pathophysiology, consequences and treatment options of OSA with a focused discussion on oral appliance (OA) therapy, as this topic is not routinely included in current dental curricula of many dental schools. Additionally, we present a template dental curriculum for predoctoral and/or postdoctoral students in education regarding sleep disordered breathing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the quality of sleep among pharmacy students in the didactic portion of the curriculum at one school of pharmacy. METHODS The study consisted of an anonymous, voluntary survey that included the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), a self-rated instrument that measures sleep habits for a month. RESULTS The survey was completed by 253 students. Students in the lower grade point average (GPA) category had higher scores on 2 of 7 components of the PSQI and on the global score. Poor sleep quality, indicated by a global PSQI score of greater than 5, was reported by 140 students. The rate of poor sleeping was higher among students in the lower GPA category. CONCLUSION Poor sleep quality was pervasive among surveyed pharmacy students in the didactic portion of the pharmacy school curriculum, especially among those with lower GPAs.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES This study assessed knowledge and attitudes toward obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) among community physicians and explored factors that are associated with referrals for OSA evaluation. METHODS Medical students and residents collected data from a convenience sample of 105 physicians practicing at community-based clinics in a large metropolitan area. Average age was 48 ± 14 years; 68% were male, 70% black, 24% white, and 6% identified as "other." Physicians completed the Obstructive Sleep Apnea Knowledge and Attitudes questionnaire. RESULTS The average year in physician practice was 18 ± 19 years. Of the sample, 90% reported providing care to black patients. The overall OSA referral rate made by physicians was 75%. OSA knowledge and attitudes scores ranged from 5 to 18 (mean = 14 ± 2) and from 7 to 20 (mean = 13 ± 3), respectively. OSA knowledge was associated with white race/ ethnicity (rp = 0.26, p < 0.05), fewer years in practice (rp = -0.38, p < 0.01), patients inquiring about OSA (rp = 0.31, p < 0.01), and number of OSA referrals made for OSA evaluation (rp = 0.30, p < 0.01). Positive attitude toward OSA was associated with patients inquiring about OSA (rp = 0.20, p < 0.05). Adjusting for OSA knowledge and attitudes showed that physicians whose patients inquired about OSA were nearly 10 times as likely to make a referral for OSA evaluation (OR = 9.38, 95% CI: 2.32-38.01, p < 0.01). CONCLUSION Independent of physicians' knowledge and attitudes toward obstructive sleep apnea, the likelihood of making a referral for obstructive sleep apnea evaluation was influenced by whether patients inquired about the condition.

Abstract
Integrating oral appliance therapy into the delivery of care for sleeprelated breathing disorders has been a challenge for dental and medical professionals alike. We review the difficulties that have been faced and propose a multidisciplinary care delivery model that integrates dental sleep medicine and sleep medicine under the same roof with educational and research components. The model promises to offer distinct advantages to improved patient care, continuity of treatment, and the central coordination of clinical and insurance-related benefits.
