Efficacy of indigenous soil microbes in arsenic mitigation from contaminated alluvial soil of India

Groundwater arsenic contamination: impacts on human health and agriculture, ex situ treatment techniques and alleviation

Groundwater is consumed by a large number of people as their primary source of drinking water globally. Among all the countries worldwide, nations in South Asia, particularly India and Bangladesh, have severe problem of groundwater arsenic (As) contamination so are on our primary focus in this study. The objective of this review study is to provide a viewpoint about the source of As, the effect of As on human health and agriculture, and available treatment technologies for the removal of As from water. The source of As can be either natural or anthropogenic and exposure mediums can either be air, drinking water, or food. As-polluted groundwater may lead to a reduction in crop yield and quality as As enters the food chain and disrupts it. Chronic As exposure through drinking water is highly associated with the disruption of many internal systems and organs in the human body including cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, and endocrine systems, soft organs, and skin. We have critically reviewed a complete spectrum of the available ex situ technologies for As removal including oxidation, coagulation-flocculation, adsorption, ion exchange, and membrane process. Along with that, pros and cons of different techniques have also been scrutinized on the basis of past literatures reported. Among all the conventional techniques, coagulation is the most efficient technique, and considering the advanced and emerging techniques, electrocoagulation is the most prominent option to be adopted. At last, we have proposed some mitigation strategies to be followed with few long and short-term ideas which can be adopted to overcome this epidemic.

Significance of Shewanella Species for the Phytoavailability and Toxicity of Arsenic-A Review

Simple Summary

The availability of some toxic heavy metals, such as arsenic (As), is related to increased human and natural activities. This type of metal availability in the environment is associated with various health and environmental issues. Such problems may arise due to direct contact with or consumption of plant products containing this metal in some of their parts. A microbial approach that employs a group of bacteria (Shewanella species) is proposed to reduce the negative consequences of the availability of this metal (As) in the environment. This innovative strategy can reduce As mobility, its spread, and uptake by plants in the environment. The benefits of this approach include its low cost and the possibility of not exposing other components of the environment to unfavourable consequences.

Abstract

The distribution of arsenic continues due to natural and anthropogenic activities, with varying degrees of impact on plants, animals, and the entire ecosystem. Interactions between iron (Fe) oxides, bacteria, and arsenic are significantly linked to changes in the mobility, toxicity, and availability of arsenic species in aquatic and terrestrial habitats. As a result of these changes, toxic As species become available, posing a range of threats to the entire ecosystem. This review elaborates on arsenic toxicity, the mechanisms of its bioavailability, and selected remediation strategies. The article further describes how the detoxification and methylation mechanisms used by Shewanella species could serve as a potential tool for decreasing phytoavailable As and lessening its contamination in the environment. If taken into account, this approach will provide a globally sustainable and cost-effective strategy for As remediation and more information to the literature on the unique role of this bacterial species in As remediation as opposed to conventional perception of its role as a mobiliser of As.

Investigation of arsenic-resistant, arsenite-oxidizing bacteria for plant growth promoting traits isolated from arsenic contaminated soils

The problem of arsenic (As) pollution being severe warrants opting for low-cost microbial remediation strategies. The present study of identifying suitable bacterial strains led to the isolation of eleven As-tolerant strains from the As-contaminated rhizosphere soils of West Bengal, India. They were found to oxidize/reduce 55-31.6% of 5 mM As(III) and 73-37.6% of 5 mM As(V) within 12 h. The four isolates (BcAl-1, JN 73, LAR-2, and AR-30) had a high level of As(III) oxidase activity along with a higher level of As(V) and As(III) resistance. The agar diffusion assay of the isolates further confirmed their ability to endure As stress. The presence of aoxB gene was observed in these four As(III) oxidizing isolates. Evaluation of plant growth-promoting characteristics revealed that BcAl-1 (Burkholderia cepacia), JN 73 (Burkholderia metallica), AR-30 (Burkholderia cenocepacia), and LAR-2 (Burkholderia sp.) had significant plant growth-promoting characteristics (PGP), including the ability to solubilize phosphate, siderophore production, indole acetic acid-like molecules production, ACC deaminase production, and nodule formation under As stressed condition. BcAl-1 and JN 73 emerged as the most promising traits in As removal as well as plant growth promotion.

Ameliorative effect of graphene nanosheets against arsenic-induced toxicity in mice by oral exposure

Arsenic is a highly toxic environmental pollutant that is abundant in waters around the world. Previous studies have indicated that the toxicity of arsenic can be affected by co-exposure to chemicals. As a promising two-dimensional nanomaterial, graphene has received extensive attention in recent years. Owing to the wide application of graphene, its co-exposure with arsenic increases significantly. However, little information is available on the combined toxicity of graphene and arsenic. This study aimed to investigate the effects of graphene on arsenic-induced toxicity by oral exposure in mice. The results showed that the addition of graphene significantly reduced the toxicity of arsenic in the intestine and liver of mice, and the high-concentration graphene exhibited greater toxicity reduction effects. Graphene significantly decreased the bioavailability of arsenic because of its adsorption capability and spatial structure. In addition, graphene adhered to the intestinal tract may also prevent arsenic from passing through the intestinal epithelium freely. Moreover, graphene also affected arsenic toxicity through enhanced metabolism transformation by changing the gut microbiota. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the combined toxicity of graphene and arsenic.

Remediation of Arsenic Contaminated Soil Using Phosphate and Colloidal Gas Aphron Suspensions Produced from Sapindus mukorossi

Phosphate and colloidal gas aphrons (CGAs) generated from saponin extracted from Sapindus mukorossi fruit, were evaluated for washing low levels of arsenic from an iron rich soil. Phosphate is one of the most commonly dispersed chemicals that increases arsenic mobility in soil due to their structural similarities, making it an important factor in arsenic removal process. Column washing experiments were performed with CGAs in down flow and up flow modes on soil of pH 5 and 6. Soapnut CGAs, when paired with phosphate removed up to 95 % arsenic while soapnut CGAs alone could only remove up to 70 % arsenic. The presence of phosphate improved efficiency of soapnut solution by up to 35 %. SEM image of washed soil revealed minor corrosion of soil surface while using phosphate with soapnut. Therefore, the addition of phosphates would have positive impact on soil washing using soapnut saponin.

Arsenic Metabolism and Toxicity Influenced by Ferric Iron in Simulated Gastrointestinal Tract and the Roles of Gut Microbiota

Iron (Fe) is a common trace element in drinking water. However, little is known about how environmental concentrations of Fe affect the metabolism and toxicity of arsenic (As) in drinking water. In this study, influence of Fe at drinking water-related concentrations (0.1, 0.3, and 3 mg Fe (total)/L) on As metabolism and toxicity, and the roles of gut microbiota during this process were investigated by using in vitro Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (SHIME). Results showed that Fe had ability to decrease bioaccessible As by coflocculation in small intestine. 0.1 and 0.3 mg/L Fe significantly increased As methylation in simulated transverse and descending colon. Gut microbiota played an important role in alteration of As species, and Fe could affect As metabolism by changing the gut microbiota. Bacteroides, Clostridium, Alistipes, and Bilophila had As resistance and potential ability to methylate As. Cytotoxicity assays of effluents from simulated colons showed that the low levels of Fe decreased As toxicity on human hepatoma cell line HepG2, which might be due to the increase of methylated As. When assessing the health risk of As in drinking water, the residual Fe should be considered.

Effective role of indigenous microorganisms for sustainable environment

Environmental protection has the foremost importance in the present day life of mankind. Scientists have been researching for technologies naturally available for enhancement of agriculture, management of agricultural waste, etc. Indigenous Microorganisms (IMO’s)-based technology is one such great technology which is applied in the eastern part of world for the extraction of minerals, enhancement of agriculture and waste management. Indigenous microorganisms are a group of innate microbial consortium that inhabits the soil and the surfaces of all living things inside and outside which have the potentiality in biodegradation, bioleaching, biocomposting, nitrogen fixation, improving soil fertility and as well in the production of plant growth hormones. Without these microbes, the life will be wretched and melancholic on this lively planet for the survival of human race. That is why, environmental restoration and safeguarding target via the indigenous microbes in a native manner to turn out the good-for-nothing and useless waste into productive bioresources is the primary concern of this review. Based on the collection sites, the process of collection and isolation methods are different as they may vary from place to place. Ultimately, in this way to a meaningful and significant extent, we can bridge the gap between the horrifying environmental distress and the hostile activities that have been constantly provoked by human kind—by getting these indigenous microorganisms into action.

A review on completing arsenic biogeochemical cycle: microbial volatilization of arsines in environment

Arsenic (As) is ubiquitous in the environment in the carcinogenic inorganic forms, posing risks to human health in many parts of the world. Many microorganisms have evolved a series of mechanisms to cope with inorganic arsenic in their growth media such as transforming As compounds into volatile derivatives. Bio-volatilization of As has been suggested to play an important role in global As biogeochemical cycling, and can also be explored as a potential method for arsenic bioremediation. This review aims to provide an overview of the quality and quantity of As volatilization by fungi, bacteria, microalga and protozoans. Arsenic bio-volatilization is influenced by both biotic and abiotic factors that can be manipulated/elucidated for the purpose of As bioremediation. Since As bio-volatilization is a resurgent topic for both biogeochemistry and environmental health, our review serves as a concept paper for future research directions.

Arsenic-tolerant, arsenite-oxidising bacterial strains in the contaminated soils of West Bengal, India

As biological agents represent an affordable alternative to costly metal decontamination technologies, we isolated arsenic (As) oxidising bacteria from the As-contaminated soils of West Bengal, India. These strains were closely related to various species of Bacillus and Geobacillus based on their 16S rRNA gene sequences. They were found to be hyper-resistant to both As(V) (167-400 mM) and As(III) (16-47 mM). Elevated rates of As(III) oxidation (278-1250 μM h(-1)) and arsenite oxidase activity (2.1-12.5 nM min(-1) mg(-1) protein) were observed in these isolates. Screening identified four strains as superior As-oxidisers. Among them, AMO-10 completely (100%) oxidised 30 mM of As(III) within 24 h. The presence of the aoxB gene was confirmed in the screened isolates. Phylogenetic tree construction based on the aoxB sequence revealed that two strains, AGO-S5 and AGH-02, clustered with Achromobacter and Variovorax, whereas the other two (AMO-10 and ADP-25) remained unclustered. The increased rate of As(III) oxidation by these native strains might be exploited for the remediation of As in contaminated environments. Notably, this study presents the first correlation regarding the presence of the aoxB gene and As(III) oxidation ability in Geobacillus stearothermophilus.

Biovolatilisation: a poorly studied pathway of the arsenic biogeochemical cycle

It has been known for over a hundred years that microorganisms can produce volatile arsenic (As) species, termed "arsines". However, this topic has received relatively little attention compared to As behaviour in soils and biotransformation through the trophic level in the marine and terrestrial environment. We believe this is due to long-standing misconceptions regarding volatile As stability and transport as well as an absence, until recently, of appropriate sampling methods. First and foremost, an attempt is made to unify arsines' designations, notations and formulas, taking into account all the different terms used in the literature. Then, the stability of As volatile species is discussed and new analytical developments are explored. Further, the special cases of diffuse low-level emissions (e.g. soil and sediment biovolatilisation), and point sources with high-level emissions (geothermal environments, landfills, and natural gas) are comprehensively reviewed. In each case, future possible areas of research and unknown mechanisms are identified and their importance towards the global As biogeochemical cycle is explored. This review gathers new information regarding mechanisms, stability, transport and sampling of the very elusive arsines and shows that more research should be conducted on this important process.
