Dynamic behaviour of Cd2+ adsorption in equilibrium batch studies by CaCO3(-)-rich Corbicula fluminea shell

Rationally designed calcium carbonate multifunctional trap for contaminants adsorption

Adsorption technology has been widely developed to control environmental pollution, which plays an important role in the sustainable development of modern society. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is characterized by its flexible pore design and functional group modification, which meet the high capacity and targeting requirements of adsorption. Therefore, its charm of "small materials for great use" makes it a suitable candidate for adsorption. Firstly, we comprehensively review the research progress of controlled synthesis and surface modification of CaCO3, and its application for adsorbing contaminants from water and air. Then, we systematically examine the structure-effect relationship between CaCO3 adsorbents and contaminants, while also intrinsic mechanism of remarkable capacity and targeted adsorption. Finally, from the perspective of material design and engineering application, we offer insightful discussion on the prospects and challenges of calcium carbonate adsorbents, providing a valuable reference for the further research in this field.

High thiabendazole fungicide uptake using Cellana tramoserica shells modified by copper: characterization, adsorption mechanism, and optimization using CCD-RSM approach

In this paper, Cellana tramoserica (CT) shells were modified by copper and used as an adsorbent to remove thiabendazole (TBZ) from aqueous media. The removal efficiency of TBZ onto CT shells and modified Cellana tramoserica (CT-Cu) shells was investigated by considering the following parameters: initial pesticide concentration, solution pH, agitation time, temperature, and adsorbent mass. The experimental results show that the pseudo-first-order and Langmuir models well describe the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption amount for CT and CT-Cu is 319.68 mg/g and 376.12 mg/g, respectively. CT-Cu showed higher TBZ removal efficiency than CT, explained by the ligand exchange between the water and the pesticide molecules in the metal coordination sphere. Response surface methodology combined with central composite design (RSM-CCD) was used to optimize the adsorption conditions. Optimized values were obtained at 5 for pH, 50 ppm, 120 min, and 20 mg of CT-Cu adsorbent. Under these optimal conditions, 91% of TBZ was removed by adsorption onto CT-Cu. Graphical abstract.

A global synthesis of ecosystem services provided and disrupted by freshwater bivalve molluscs

Identification of ecosystem services, i.e. the contributions that ecosystems make to human well-being, has proven instrumental in galvanising public and political support for safeguarding biodiversity and its benefits to people. Here we synthesise the global evidence on ecosystem services provided and disrupted by freshwater bivalves, a heterogenous group of >1200 species, including some of the most threatened (in Unionida) and invasive (e.g. Dreissena polymorpha) taxa globally. Our systematic literature review resulted in a data set of 904 records from 69 countries relating to 24 classes of provisioning (N = 189), cultural (N = 491) and regulating (N = 224) services following the Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services (CICES). Prominent ecosystem services included (i) the provisioning of food, materials and medicinal products, (ii) knowledge acquisition (e.g. on water quality, past environments and historical societies), ornamental and other cultural contributions, and (iii) the filtration, sequestration, storage and/or transformation of biological and physico-chemical water properties. About 9% of records provided evidence for the disruption rather than provision of ecosystem services. Synergies and trade-offs of ecosystem services were observed. For instance, water filtration by freshwater bivalves can be beneficial for the cultural service 'biomonitoring', while negatively or positively affecting food consumption or human recreation. Our evidence base spanned a total of 91 genera and 191 species, dominated by Unionida (55% of records, 76% of species), Veneroida (21 and 9%, respectively; mainly Corbicula spp.) and Myoida (20 and 4%, respectively; mainly Dreissena spp.). About one third of records, predominantly from Europe and the Americas, related to species that were non-native to the country of study. The majority of records originated from Asia (35%), with available evidence for 23 CICES classes, as well as Europe (29%) and North America (23%), where research was largely focused on 'biomonitoring'. Whilst the earliest record (from 1949) originated from North America, since 2000, annual output of records has increased rapidly in Asia and Europe. Future research should focus on filling gaps in knowledge in lesser-studied regions, including Africa and South America, and should look to provide a quantitative valuation of the socio-economic costs and benefits of ecosystem services shaped by freshwater bivalves.

Adsorption kinetics and isotherms of binary metal ion aqueous solution using untreated venus shell

Among available technologies to remove heavy metals from wastewater, biosorption has gained more attention due to its high removal efficiency, friendly operation, and inexpensive cost. Despite many studies on metal adsorption from single ion solutions, kinetics and isotherms of binary metal ions simultaneously adsorbed onto biosorbents have not been thoroughly investigated to provide insight on involving mechanisms. This study explored the adsorption potential of untreated venus shells (UVS) that can be utilized in economical and environmentally-friendly ways. In this work, UVS of different sizes were prepared without chemical treatment as a biosorbent. Characterization of UVS was accomplished using nitrogen adsorption isotherm, FTIR, and SEM-EDX. Batch adsorption was carried out to study the effect of initial metal ion concentration, adsorbent dosage, and size on removing Cu(II) and Zn(II) from a binary solution of both metal ions using UVS. The experimental values of maximum adsorption capacities of Cu(II) and Zn(II) were 0.446 and 0.465 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption data were analyzed using the pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich, and intraparticle diffusion rate equations. The pseudo-second order and the intraparticle diffusion model yielded the best fit to the experimental data for Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions, respectively. The equilibrium isotherm was examined using the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Dubinin–Radushkevich (D–R), and Elovich models. The Freundlich model best fits the Cu(II) and Zn(II) equilibrium adsorption data. The results indicated that the adsorption of Cu(II) and Zn(II) onto UVS-600 adsorbent could undergo a chemisorption mechanism. Both metal ions in an aqueous solution were competitively adsorbed onto the heterogeneous active sites available on the shell surfaces. Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions in the binary system could result in ionic interference between the adsorbed ions and the active sites.

Recovery and recycle of wastewater contaminated with heavy metals using adsorbents incorporated from waste resources and nanomaterials-A review

Recovery and recycle of wastewater are essential because of the need of huge quantities of water everywhere in this world. Presence of heavy metals in wastewater such as iron (Fe), molybdenum (Mo), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), vanadium (V), cobalt (Co), tungsten (W), chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), silver (Ag), antimony (Sb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), lead (Pd), uranium (U), etc is the serious environmental issues and risk for human and animal health. Adsorbents are simple and low-cost methods to treat the pollutants and heavy metals of wastewater. The adsorbents are capable to treat the wastewater prepared from different wastes such as domestic, agricultural, industrial, animal and marine waste etc. In recent years, novel nanomaterials are also used as adsorbents which enhance the treatment efficiency of wastewater. Adsorption is a mass transfer phenomenon revolving shift of elements from a fluid to a solid phase based on the concentration gradient. The mechanism which helps in separation of contaminants from the effluent and the factors governing the efficiency of adsorption are discussed elaborately.

Ultrasonic assisted agro waste biomass for rapid removal of Cd(II) ions from aquatic environment: Mechanism and modelling analysis

In this research, dragon fruit peel, an agro-waste was used to prepare the new adsorbent for the removal of Cd(II) ions from the aquatic environment. The characterization techniques of SEM, FTIR and EDX for the prepared materials have been studied. The influential parameters for Cd(II) ions were experimented and identified the probable conditions for the maximum adsorption of Cd(II) ions. The investigations on isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics for Cd(II) ions removal were examined. Adsorption isotherm data was well discussed with Langmuir model based on the obtained good correlation coefficient and error values. Moreover, it follows the pseudo-first-order and exothermic process. The values of monolayer adsorption capacity of surface-modified dragon fruit peel (SMDFP) and ultrasonic-assisted dragon fruit peel (UADFP) was determined to be 7.469 and 24.76 mg/g at an equilibrium condition, respectively. This study exposed that ultrasonic-assisted dragon fruit peel can be a suitable adsorbent for Cd(II) ions removal from the water environment.

Characteristics and mechanisms of cadmium adsorption onto biogenic aragonite shells-derived biosorbent: Batch and column studies

Calcium carbonate (CaCO₃)-enriched biomaterial derived from freshwater mussel shells (FMS) was used as a non-porous biosorbent to explore the characteristics and mechanisms of cadmium adsorption in aqueous solution. The adsorption mechanism was proposed by comparing the FMS properties before and after adsorption alongside various adsorption studies. The FMS biosorbent was characterized using nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherm, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and point of zero charge. The results of batch experiments indicated that FMS possessed an excellent affinity to Cd(II) ions within solutions pH higher than 4.0. An increase in ionic strength resulted in a significant decrease in the amount of Cd(II) adsorbed onto FMS. Kinetic study demonstrated that the adsorption process quickly reached equilibrium at approximately 60 min. The FMS biosorbent exhibited the Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity as follows: 18.2 mg/g at 10 °C < 26.0 mg/g at 30 °C < 28.6 mg/g at 50 °C. The Cd(II) adsorption process was irreversible, spontaneous (-ΔG°), endothermic (+ΔH°), and more random (+ΔS°). Selective order (mmol/g) of metal cations followed as Pb²⁺ > Cd²⁺ > Cu²⁺ > Cr³⁺ > Zn²⁺. For column experiments, the highest Thomas adsorption capacity (7.86 mg/g) was achieved at a flow rate (9 mL/min), initial Cd(II) concentration (10 mg/L), and bed height (5 cm). The Cd(II) removal by FMS was regarded as non-activated chemisorption that occurred very rapidly (even at a low temperature) with a low magnitude of activation energy. Primary adsorption mechanism was surface precipitation. Cadmium precipitated in the primary (Cd,Ca)CO₃ form with a calcite-type structure on the FMS surface. A crust of rhombohedral crystals on the substrate was observed by SEM. Freshwater mussel shells have the potential as a renewable adsorbent to remove cadmium from water.

Biological toxicity response of Asian Clam (Corbicula fluminea) to pollutants in surface water and sediment

As a typical test species, Asian Clam (Corbicula fluminea) is widely used in the identification and evaluation of freshwater toxicity. This study provides a summary of the research published from 1979 to 2018. The focus was on the bioaccumulation, morphological and behavioral changes, and biochemical index alterations of Corbicula fluminea to target pollutants (i.e., ammonia, metal(loid)s, and organic chemicals) in surface water and sediment. The applications on the evaluation of actual aquatic pollution, determination of toxicological mechanisms, prediction of toxicity, and bioremediation are also specifically discussed. The primary purpose is to facilitate the comprehensive understanding and accurate application of Corbicula fluminea in freshwater ecotoxicological studies.

Methyl acrylate modified apple pomace as promising adsorbent for the removal of divalent metal ion from industrial wastewater

Polymerized apple pomace (PoAP) surface was evaluated as adsorbent for the removal of Pb⁺², Cd⁺², and Ni⁺² ions from aqueous solution. PoAP was characterized by FTIR, SEM, EDS, XRD, and BET surface area analyzer. Furthermore, the adsorption influencing parameters such as dose, pH, time, concentration, and temperature were optimized for maximum removal of metal ions from aqueous solution. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of PoAP was found to be 106, 34.12, and 19.45 mg g^-1, for Pb⁺², Cd⁺², and Ni⁺² ions respectively, using the Langmuir isotherm model. The rate of adsorption was evaluated using pseudo-second order kinetics and intra-particle diffusion. The adsorption data followed pseudo-second order kinetic with the correlation coefficient (r ²) from 0.99-1 at all concentration. Thermodynamic study revealed endothermic nature of Pb⁺² and Cd⁺² adsorption and exothermic for Ni⁺² ions. The rate of adsorption for binary and tertiary mixtures of Pb⁺², Ni⁺², and Cd⁺² metal ion was studied using the ideal adsorbed solution theory. The regeneration study revealed that PoAP could be re-utilized up to 4 cycles for Pb⁺² and 2 cycles for Cd⁺² and Ni⁺² ions. PoAP was successfully applied to real industrial wastewater for the removal of Pb⁺², Cd⁺², and Ni⁺² ions.

Effective removal of lead (II) ions by dead calcareous skeletons: sorption performance and influencing factors

Dead calcareous skeletons (CSs) as low-cost adsorbents were studied to remove lead ions (Pb (II)) in an aqueous solution. Factors influencing the efficiency of CSs were evaluated by adsorbent size, contact time, initial concentration, dosage concentration and pH. The optimum CS size for removal of Pb (II) was 710 μm at an equilibrium time of 720 min. The best dosage of CS was 10 g/L for a 99% removal efficiency without pH adjustment. Pb (II) ions were effectively removed in the initial pH of the metal solution. CS was able to remove a high concentration (100 mg/L) of Pb (II) at a removal efficiency of 99.92% and at an adsorption capacity of 13.06 mg/g. Our results demonstrated the potential of CS as a metal adsorbent in the aqueous phase with a high-removal efficiency and distinct physical characteristics.
