The role of authigenic sulfides in immobilization of potentially toxic metals in the Bagno Bory wetland, southern Poland

A review of amendments for simultaneously reducing Cd and As availability in paddy soils and rice grain based on meta-analysis

Arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) accumulation in rice grains is a global food safety issue, and various methods and materials have been used to remove or reduce As and Cd in agricultural soils and rice grains. Despite the availability of synthesized materials capable of simultaneous As and Cd reduction from soil and rice grains, the contributions, efficiency, and main ingredients of the materials for As and Cd immobilization remain unclear. The present study first summarized the biogeochemistry of As and Cd in paddy soils and their transfer in the soil-food-human continuum. We also reviewed a series of reported inorganic and organic materials for simultaneous immobilization of As and Cd in paddy soils, and their reduction efficiency of As and Cd bioavailability were listed and compared. Based on the abovementioned materials, the study conducted a meta-analysis of 38 articles with 2565 observations to quantify the impacts of materials on simultaneous As and Cd reduction from soil and rice grains. Meta-analysis results showed that combining organic and inorganic amendments corresponded to effect sizes of -62.3% and -67.8% on As and Cd accumulation in rice grains, while the effect sizes on As and Cd reduction in paddy soils were -44.2% and -46.2%, respectively. Application of Fe based materials significantly (P < 0.05) reduced As (-54.2%) and Cd (-74.9%), accounting for the highest immobilization efficiency of As and Cd in rice grain among all the reviewed materials, outweighing S, Mn, P, Si, and Ca based materials. Moreover, precipitation, surface complexation, ion exchange, and electrostatic attraction mechanisms were involved in the co-immobilization tactics. The present study underlines the application of combined organic and inorganic amendments in simultaneous As and Cd immobilization. It also highlighted that employing Fe-incorporated biochar material may be a potential strategy for co-mitigating As and Cd pollution in paddy soils and accumulation in rice grains.

Arsenic and cadmium availability and its removal in paddy farming areas

Arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) accumulation in rice grain is a global concern threatening food security and safety to the growing population. As and Cd are toxic non-essential elements poisonous to animal and human at higher levels. Its accumulation in agro-ecosystems pose a public health risk to consumers of agro-ecosystem products. Due to their hazards, As and Cd sources should be cleared, avoiding entering plants and the human body. As and Cd removal in soils and grains in agro-ecosystems has been conducted by various materials (natural and synthesized), however, there are little documentation on their contribution on As and Cd removal or reduction in rice grains. This identified knowledge gap necessitate a systematically review to understand efficiency and mechanisms of As and Cd availability reduction and removal in paddy farming areas through utilization of various synthetic and modified materials. To achieve this, published peer reviewed articles between 2010 and 2024 were collected from various database i.e., Science Direct, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Research Gate and analyzed its content in respect to As and Cd reduction and removal. Furthermore, collected data were re-analyzed to determine standardized mean differences (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Based on 96 studies with 228 observations involving Fe, Ca, Si, and Se-based materials were identified, it was found that application of Fe, Ca, Si, and Se-based materials potentially reduced As and Cd in rice grains among various study sites and across studies. Among the studied materials, Fe-based materials observed to be more efficient compared to other utilized materials. However, there little or no information on performance of materials when used in combination and how they can improve crop productivity and soil health, thus requiring further studies. Thus, this study confirm Fe, Ca, Si, and Se modified materials have significant potential to reduce As and Cd availability in paddy farming areas and rice grains, thus necessary effort must be made to ensure materials access and availability for farmers utilization in paddy fields to reduce As and Cd accumulation.

Practical Guide to Measuring Wetland Carbon Pools and Fluxes

Wetlands cover a small portion of the world, but have disproportionate influence on global carbon (C) sequestration, carbon dioxide and methane emissions, and aquatic C fluxes. However, the underlying biogeochemical processes that affect wetland C pools and fluxes are complex and dynamic, making measurements of wetland C challenging. Over decades of research, many observational, experimental, and analytical approaches have been developed to understand and quantify pools and fluxes of wetland C. Sampling approaches range in their representation of wetland C from short to long timeframes and local to landscape spatial scales. This review summarizes common and cutting-edge methodological approaches for quantifying wetland C pools and fluxes. We first define each of the major C pools and fluxes and provide rationale for their importance to wetland C dynamics. For each approach, we clarify what component of wetland C is measured and its spatial and temporal representativeness and constraints. We describe practical considerations for each approach, such as where and when an approach is typically used, who can conduct the measurements (expertise, training requirements), and how approaches are conducted, including considerations on equipment complexity and costs. Finally, we review key covariates and ancillary measurements that enhance the interpretation of findings and facilitate model development. The protocols that we describe to measure soil, water, vegetation, and gases are also relevant for related disciplines such as ecology. Improved quality and consistency of data collection and reporting across studies will help reduce global uncertainties and develop management strategies to use wetlands as nature-based climate solutions.

Effect of peat organic matter on sulfide weathering and thallium reactivity: Implications for organic environments

Weathering of Tl-containing sulfides in a model (12-week) peat pot trial was studied to better understand their geochemical stability, dissolution kinetics, alteration products and the associated release and mobility of anthropogenic Tl in organic environments. We also present the effect of industrial acid rainwater on sulfide degradation and Tl migration in naturally acidic peat. Sphalerite (ZnS) was much less stable in peat than other Tl-containing sulfides (galena and pyrite), and thus acted as a major phase responsible for Tl mobilization. Furthermore, Tl incongruently leached out over Zn from ZnS, and accumulated considerably more in the peat solutions (≤5 μg Tl/L) and the peat samples (≤0.4 mg Tl/kg) that were subjected to acid rain watering compared to a deionized H₂O regime. This finding was in good agreement with the absence of secondary Tl-containing phases, which could potentially control the Tl flux into the peat. The behavior of Tl was not as conservative as Pb throughout the trial, since a higher peat mobility and migration potential of Tl was observed compared to Pb. In conclusion, industrial acid precipitations can significantly affect the stability of ZnS even in acidic peat/organic environments, making it susceptible to enhanced weathering and Tl release in the long term.

Ultrafine multi-metal (Zn, Cd, Pb) sulfide aggregates formation in periodically water-logged organic soil

This study investigates authigenic metal (Zn, Cd, and Pb) sulfides formed in the upper (4-20 cm) layer of severely degraded soil close to ZnPb smelter in CE Europe (southern Poland). The soil layer is circumneutral (pH 6.0-6.8), organic, occasionally water-logged, and contains on average 26,400 mg kg^-1 Zn, 18,800 mg kg^-1 Pb, 1300 mg kg^-1 Cd, and 2500 mg kg^-1 of sulfur. The distribution of the authigenic sulfide mineralization is uneven, showing close association with the remains of vascular plants (Equisetaceae, Carex, and herbs). A combination of focused ion beam (FIB) technology with scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is used to reveal the structure and organization of the metal sulfides at micro- and nanoscale resolution. The sulfides form spheroidal and botryoidal porous aggregates composed of nanocrystalline (<5 nm) ZnCd sulfide solid solution and minor discrete PbS (galena) crystals up to 15 nm. The solid solution exists in a cubic (sphalerite) polytype over a whole Zn/Cd range. An intricate core-shell structure is found to be a characteristic feature of the aggregates in which high-Zn outer layers encapsulate Cd-rich sulfide core. PbS resides between the Cd-rich and Cd poor sulfide within nano sites of increased porosity. The study highlights the importance of nanoscale analyses for the prediction of metal behavior in soils. The sulfide self-organization into complex structures and Cd encapsulation inside high-Zn sulfide indicate the occurrence of a self-sustainable mechanism specific to polluted periodically water-logged soil that limits Cd mobility. However, as the reduced Cd mobility is obtained at the Zn expense, the soil gets Cd enriched relative to Zn over extended periods. Although the study proves PbS crystallization in the soil, the process seems environmentally irrelevant even at high Pb contents, being suppressed by other soil processes (e.g., Pb sorption on organic matter). Our findings are valuable in remediation strategies and the management of contaminated soils rich in organic matter that address the mobility of toxic metals and their transfer into living organisms.

Seasonal variation and mobility of trace metals in the beach sediments of NW Borneo

Miri city has a dynamic coastal environment, mainly influenced by intensive sedimentation from the Baram River and excessive trace metal loading by the Miri River, which are significant environmental concerns. As the mobility, bioavailability, and toxicity of the trace metals in the sediments are largely controlled by their particulate speciation, the modified BCR sequential extraction protocol was applied to determine the particulate speciation of trace metals in the coastal sediments of Miri, to unravel the seasonal geochemical processes responsible for known observations, and to identify possible sources of these trace metals. The granulometric analysis results showed that littoral currents aided by the monsoonal winds have influenced the grain size distribution of the sediments, enabling us to divide the study area into north-east and south-west segments where the geochemical composition are distinct. The Cu (>84%) and Zn (82%) concentrations are predominantly associated with the exchangeable fraction, which is readily bioavailable. Pb and Cd are dominant in non-residual fractions and other metals viz., Fe, Mn, Co, Ni, and Cr are dominant in the residual fraction. Using Pearson's correlation and factor analysis, the major mechanisms controlling the chemistry of the sediments are identified as association of Cu and Zn with fine fraction sediments, sulphide oxidation in the SW segment of the study area, atmospheric fallout of Pb and Cd in the river basins, precipitation of dissolved Fe and Mn supplied from the rivers and remobilization of Mn from the coastal sediments. Based on various pollution indices, it is inferred that the coastal sediments of NW Borneo are contaminated with Cu and Zn, and are largely bioavailable, which can be a threat to the local aquatic organisms, coral reefs, and coastal mangroves.

Thallium and lead variations in a contaminated peatland: A combined isotopic study from a mining/smelting area

Vertical profiles of Tl, Pb and Zn concentrations and Tl and Pb isotopic ratios in a contaminated peatland/fen (Wolbrom, Poland) were studied to address questions regarding (i) potential long-term immobility of Tl in a peat profile, and (ii) a possible link in Tl isotopic signatures between a Tl source and a peat sample. Both prerequisites are required for using peatlands as archives of atmospheric Tl deposition and Tl isotopic ratios as a source proxy. We demonstrate that Tl is an immobile element in peat with a conservative pattern synonymous to that of Pb, and in contrast to Zn. However, the peat Tl record was more affected by geogenic source(s), as inferred from the calculated element enrichments. The finding further implies that Tl was largely absent from the pre-industrial emissions (>~250 years BP). The measured variations in Tl isotopic ratios in respective peat samples suggest a consistency with anthropogenic Tl (ε²⁰⁵Tl between ~ -3 and -4), as well as with background Tl isotopic values in the study area (ε²⁰⁵Tl between ~0 and -1), in line with detected ²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁷Pb ratios (1.16-1.19). Therefore, we propose that peatlands can be used for monitoring trends in Tl deposition and that Tl isotopic ratios can serve to distinguish its origin(s). However, given that the studied fen has a particularly complicated geochemistry (attributed to significant environmental changes in its history), it seems that ombrotrophic peatlands could be better suited for this type of Tl research.

Facile combinations of thiosulfate and zerovalent iron synergically immobilize cadmium in soils through mild extraction and facilitated immobilization

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most toxic substances released in the environment. Cd-contaminated soils usually have a large pool of bioavailable Cd species and lead to excessive Cd accumulation in planted cereal crops. Treatment methods for stable immobilization of Cd in soils are desirable. Here we reported that facile combinations of thiosulfate (STS) and zerovalent iron (ZVI) reinforced Cd immobilization in soils and reduced Cd accumulation in wheat. STS mildly activated Cd in soils through the formation of soluble Cd(S₂O₃)_x complexes, whereas intermediates of STS (e.g., sulfate and sulfides) and ZVI synergically facilitated immobilization of Cd in soils. The synergy was ascribed to the facilitated formation of FeOOH with high Cd-binding affinity and formation of stable sulfate-Cd-FeOOH complexes and poorly available CdS_x. STS-ZVI treatments increased residual Cd in soils by 101-123% and decreased Cd accumulation in wheat shoots by 13-68%, depending on chemical compositions and doses of binary reagents. Field applications of STS and ZVI (0.06-0.11 kg/m²) demonstrated 24-39% reductions of grain Cd.

Influence of Wooden Sawdust Treatments on Cu(II) and Zn(II) Removal from Water

Organic waste materials and semi-products containing cellulose are used as low-cost adsorbents that are able to compete with conventional sorbents. In addition, their capacity to bind heavy metal ions can be intensified by chemical treatments using mineral and organic acids, bases, oxidizing agents, and organic compounds. In this paper, we studied the biosorption capacity of natural and modified wooden sawdust of poplar, cherry, spruce, and hornbeam in order to remove heavy metals from acidic model solutions. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra showed changes of the functional groups due to the alkaline modification of sawdust, which manifested in the considerably increased intensity of the hydroxyl peaks. The adsorption isotherm models clearly indicated that the adsorptive behavior of metal ions in treated sawdust satisfied not only the Langmuir model, but also the Freundlich model. The adsorption data obtained for studied sorbents were better fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model for both metals, except for spruce sawdust. Surface complexation and ion exchange are the major mechanisms involved in metal ion removal. We investigated the efficiency of the alkaline modified sawdust for metal removal under various initial concentrations of Cu(II) and Zn(II) from model solutions. The highest adsorption efficiency values (copper 94.3% at pH 6.8 and zinc 98.2% at pH 7.3) were obtained for poplar modified by KOH. For all types of sawdust, we found that the sorption efficiency of modified sorbents was higher in comparison to untreated sawdust. The value of the pH initially increased more in the case of modified sawdust (8.2 for zinc removal with spruce NaOH) and then slowly decreased (7.0 for Zn(II) with spruce NaOH).

Electron Microscopy Evidence of Zn Bioauthigenic Sulfides Formation in Polluted Organic Matter-Rich Sediments from the Chicamocha River (Boyacá-Colombia)

Electron microscopy and sediment geochemical data from a river basin (the upper Chicamocha river basin, UCRB, Boyacá province, Colombia) affected by anthropogenic activities (wastewater discharges, smelting and agricultural activities) showed the existence of heterogeneously distributed Zn particles in the sediments and sediments with Zn contents above the regional background (42 mg/kg). The objective of this study was to evidence the ZnS sedimentary neoformation in organic matter rich sediments deposited in anthropogenic reservoirs to reveal the processes involved in the sedimentary uptake of Zn from potential pollution sources. The highest Zn concentrations are found in clay minerals and organic matter-rich sediments (up to 427 mg/kg) deposited in slow-flowing reaches of the river associated to La Playa dam. Quartz-rich sediments poor in organic matter deposited in fast flowing segments of the river show very low Zn contents (1–12 mg/kg). Electron microscopy images showed ZnS nanoparticles forming cell-shaped aggregates suggesting that sulfate-reducing microorganisms acted as templates for the partial binding of Zn and for the nucleation and growth of zinc sulfide minerals. A good correlation of Zn with total organic carbon (r = 0.936) and the low potential redox of these sediments (−233 mV) suggest that organic matter was able to maintain oxygen depleted conditions appropriate to the Zn accumulation in the sediments. Our results demonstrate that potentially toxic Zn, originating from anthropic activities, was partially immobilized in organic matter-rich sediments through the precipitation of sulfides.

Transformation of S-Bearing Minerals in Organic Matter-Rich Sediments from a Saline Lake with Hydrothermal Inputs

Geothermal systems can provide significant amounts of hydrothermal sulfur to surface waters, increasing salinity and avoiding some of the common anthropic uses. The objective of this study was to investigate the sedimentary neoformation of S-bearing phases in organic matter-rich sediments from a saline lake with hydrothermal inputs (Sochagota Lake, Colombia). Detrital kaolinite and quartz are the main minerals of the materials deposited in the Sochagota Lake. Neoformed clay minerals (illite and illite-dioctahedral vermiculite mixed layers) are concentrated in the central and northern part of the lake in sediments with high organic matter content. The most organic matter-rich materials are characterized by S-bearing minerals: mackinawite, pyrite, and elemental sulfur (S°). FESEM, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), EDS, and Raman microspectrometry have revealed the presence of cell-shape aggregates of mackinawite nanoparticles filling the inner part of plant fragments, indicating that microorganisms were involved in the hydrothermal sulfur uptake. The alteration of mackinawite in free sulfide excess environment produced the formation of framboidal pyrite. The evolution to conditions with the presence of oxygen favored the formation of complex S° morphologies.

Deposition of mullite in peatlands of southern Poland: Implications for recording large-scale industrial processes

Mullite, a pure aluminosilicate (Al₆Si₂O₁₃), is a rare natural rock component, known for centuries as a very resistant ceramic material. It is also a common waste product of high-temperature coal combustion that is emitted in quantity from coal-based power stations. The occurrence of mullite in two Sphagnum-dominated peatlands located near the Upper Silesia industrial region in southern Poland is described. For the first time, a complete record of mullite deposition in the peat profiles has been obtained by XRD analyses of ashed peat samples. The mullite distribution is compared with records of Hg, Pb and Cu. While mullite is supplied during high temperature processes only, Cu, Pb and Hg show more complex pattern of distribution. Both peat profiles contain elevated amounts of mullite in the time span between ca 1950-1990 with a maximum content in ca 1980. The first appearance (∼1900) of mullite is indicative of the beginning of energy production in coal-based power plants in the region. Mullite is proposed here as an indicator of industrialization in geological records. It is resistant to post-depositional processes, emitted globally, and restricted to large-scale industry.

Heavy metal pollution in immobile and mobile components of lentic ecosystems-a review

With growing population and urbanization, there is an increasing exploitation of natural resources, and this often results to environmental pollution. In this review, the levels of heavy metal in lentic compartments (water, sediment, fishes, and aquatic plants) over the past two decades (1997-2017) have been summarized to evaluate the current pollution status of this ecosystem. In all the compartments, the heavy metals dominated are zinc followed by iron. The major reason could be area mineralogy and lithogenic sources. Enormous quantity of metals like iron in estuarine sediment is a very natural incident due to the permanently reducing condition of organic substances. Contamination of cadmium, lead, and chromium was closely associated with anthropogenic origin. In addition, surrounding land use and atmospheric deposition could have been responsible for substantial pollution. The accumulation of heavy metals in fishes and aquatic plants is the result of time-dependent deposition in lentic ecosystems. Moreover, various potential risk assessment methods for heavy metals were discussed. This review concludes that natural phenomena dominate the accumulation of essential heavy metals in lentic ecosystems compared to anthropogenic sources. Amongst other recent reviews on heavy metals from other parts of the world, the present review is executed in such a way that it explains the presence of heavy metals not only in water environment, but also in the whole of the lentic system comprising sediment, fishes, and aquatic plants.
