Effect of pectin on adsorption of Cu(II) by two variable-charge soils from southern China

How do polystyrene microplastics affect the adsorption of copper in soil?

Microplastics (MPs) commonly coexist with heavy metals in the soil environment. MPs can influence the activity of heavy metals, and the specific mechanisms need to be further explored. Here, different contents of polystyrene (PS) MPs were added to soil to explore their effects on the adsorption and desorption characteristics of copper (Cu2+) in soil. The adsorption process was mainly chemical adsorption and belonged to a spontaneous, endothermic reaction. The hydrophobicity of MPs slowed down the adsorption and desorption rates. The main adsorption mechanisms included complexation by oxygen-containing functional groups, ion exchange (accounting for 33.97-36.04 % of the total adsorption amounts), and electrostatic interactions. MPs lacked oxygen-containing functional groups and were predominantly engaged in ion exchange and electrostatic interactions. MPs diluted, blocked the soil, and covered the active sites of soil, which reduced adsorption (3.56-16.18 %) and increased desorption (0.90-2.07 %) of Cu2+ in soil samples, thus increasing the activity and mobility of Cu2+. These findings provide new insights into the effects of MPs on the fate and risk of heavy metals in soil. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: The existing literature concerning the effects of microplastics on the adsorption of heavy metals in soil is insufficient. Our investigation unveiled that the main adsorption mechanisms of different soil samples included complexation by oxygen-containing functional groups, ion exchange (accounting for 33.97-36.04 % of the total adsorption amounts), and electrostatic interactions. MPs lacked oxygen-containing functional groups and were predominantly engaged in ion exchange and electrostatic interactions. MPs diluted, blocked the soil, and covered the active sites of soil, which reduced adsorption (3.56-16.18 %) and increased desorption (0.90-2.07 %) of Cu2+ in soil samples, thus increasing the activity and mobility of Cu2+.

A Review of Pectin-Based Material for Applications in Water Treatment

Climate change and water are inseparably connected. Extreme weather events cause water to become more scarce, polluted, and erratic than ever. Therefore, we urgently need to develop solutions to reduce water contamination. This review intends to demonstrate that pectin-based materials are an excellent route to detect and mitigate pollutants from water, with several benefits. Pectin is a biodegradable polymer, extractable from vegetables, and contains several hydroxyl and carboxyl groups that can easily interact with the contaminant ions. In addition, pectin-based materials can be prepared in different forms (films, hydrogels, or beads) and cross-linked with several agents to change their molecular structure. Consequently, the pectin-based adsorbents can be tuned to remove diverse pollutants. Here, we will summarize the existing water remediation technologies highlighting adsorption as the ideal method. Then, the focus will be on the chemical structure of pectin and, from a historical perspective, on its structure after applying different cross-linking methods. Finally, we will review the application of pectin as an adsorbent of water pollutants considering the pectin of low degree methoxylation.

Cadmium Immobilization in the Rhizosphere and Plant Cellular Detoxification: Role of Plant-Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria as a Sustainable Solution

Food is the major cadmium (Cd)-exposure pathway from agricultural soils to humans and other living entities and must be reduced in an effective way. A plant can select beneficial microbes, like plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), depending upon the nature of root exudates in the rhizosphere, for its own benefits, such as plant growth promotion as well as protection from metal toxicity. This review intends to seek out information on the rhizo-immobilization of Cd in polluted soils using the PGPR along with plant nutrient fertilizers. This review suggests that the rhizo-immobilization of Cd by a combination of PGPR and nanohybrid-based plant nutrient fertilizers would be a potential and sustainable technology for phytoavailable Cd immobilization in the rhizosphere and plant cellular detoxification, by keeping the plant nutrition flow and green dynamics of plant nutrition and boosting the plant growth and development under Cd stress.

Effects of extracellular polymeric substances of Pseudomonas fluorescens, citrate, and oxalate on Pb sorption by an acidic Ultisol

The continuous production of low molecular weight (LMW) organic acids by plants and microorganisms coupled with the continuous presence of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in soils is a guarantee that the mobility of heavy metals in soils will be controlled. The effects of citrate, oxalate, and EPS on the adsorption of Pb by an acidic Ultisol were studied both as a function of pH and ionic strength. Electrokinetic potential measurements were also employed to observe to what extent each ligand affected the surface charge property of the Ultisol. All the ligands shifted the zeta potential of the Ultisol to the negative direction, implying that the surface charge of the soil became more negative. The effect on the zeta potential of the soil was observed in the order of oxalate ˃ citrate ˃ EPS. The quantity of Pb adsorbed at each pH (3.0-7.0) reflected the corresponding change in the zeta potential as induced by each ligand. The presence of the ligands shifted the isoelectric point of the Ultisol from 4.8 to 3.2 for the EPS system and below 3.0 for the citrate and oxalate systems. More Pb was adsorbed in the presence of oxalate than in the presence of citrate and EPS. The two most outstanding mechanisms that governed the adsorption of Pb by the Ultisol were (1) electrostatic attraction which was supported by the increase in negative zeta potential of the Ultisol and, (2) complexation which was supported by the lesser proportion of Pb adsorbed in the citrate system at higher pH and also by the spectroscopic data for EPS. The combination EPS + citrate + oxalate was more effective in enhancing the adsorption of Pb than the combination EPS + oxalate and EPS + citrate.

Mechanism of Cu(II) and Cd(II) immobilization by extracellular polymeric substances (Escherichia coli) on variable charge soils

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) found in soils can reduce the mobility of heavy metals through the use of both electrostatic and non-electrostatic mechanisms. Their effects vary from one soil type to another. The influence of EPS from Escherichia coli on the adsorption behaviors of Cu(II) and Cd(II) by two bulk variable charge soils, Oxisol and Ultisol, was studied at constant and varied pH, and the results were compared to a constant charge Alfisol. The maximum adsorption capacities of the soils were significantly (P < 0.05) enhanced in the presence of EPS, with Cu(II) adsorption being greater. Interaction of EPS with soils made the soil surface charge more negative by neutralizing positive charges and shifting the zeta potentials in a negative direction: from -18.6 to -26.4 mV for Alfisol, +5.1 to -22.2 mV for Oxisol, and +0.3 to -28.0 mV for Ultisol at pH 5.0. The adsorption data fitted both the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms well. Preadsorbed Cd(II) was more easily desorbed by KNO₃ than preadsorbed Cu(II) from both the control and EPS treated soils. The adsorption of both metals was governed by electrostatic and non-electrostatic mechanisms, although more Cu(II) was adsorbed through the non-electrostatic mechanism. The information obtained in this study will improve our understanding of the mechanisms involved in reducing heavy metals mobility in variable charge soils and hence, their bioavailability.

Reduction of Cd accumulation in pak choi (Brassica chinensis L.) in consecutive growing seasons using mercapto-grafted palygorskite

MP significantly reduced Cd accumulation in the shoots of pak choi in comparison to the control, in consecutive growing seasons, and the minimum Cd contents were less than the maximum permitted level proposed by the Codex Alimentarius Commission.

Adsorption of Cd(II) by two variable-charge soils in the presence of pectin

Batch experiments were conducted to investigate cadmium(II) (Cd(II)) adsorption by two variable-charge soils (an Oxisol and an Ultisol) as influenced by the presence of pectin. When pectin dosage was less than 30 g kg(-1), the increase in Cd(II) adsorption with the increasing dose of pectin was greater than that when the pectin dosage was >30 g kg(-1). Although both Langmuir and Freundlich equations fitted the adsorption isotherms of Cd(II) and electrostatic adsorption data of Cd(II) by the two soils well, the Langmuir equation showed a better fit. The increase in the maximum total adsorption of Cd(II) induced by pectin was almost equal in both the soils, whereas the increase in the maximum electrostatic adsorption of Cd(II) was greater in the Oxisol than in the Ultisol because the former contained greater amounts of free Fe/Al oxides than the latter, which, in turn, led to a greater increase in the negative charge on the Oxisol. Therefore, the presence of pectin induced the increase in Cd(II) adsorption by the variable-charge soils mainly through the electrostatic mechanism. Pectin increased the adsorption of Cd(II) by the variable-charge soils and thus decreased the activity and mobility of Cd(II) in these soils.
