Abstract
The study aimed to assess the impacts of ionic liquids (ILs) as innovative alternatives to traditional organic solvents on aquatic environments and human health. Five machine learning methods, including multiple linear regression (MLR), partial least squares regression (PLS), random forest regression (RF), support vector regression (SVR), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), were used to construct the prediction models of the toxicity of ILs to D. magna, D. rerio, and R. subcapitata. Rigorous validation criteria were implemented to evaluate the robustness and predictive accuracy of these models. The results indicated SVR and XGBoost models demonstrated superior predictive performance. In addition, for these three species of D. magna, D. rerio, and R. subcapitata. The six interspecies quantitative structure-toxicity-toxicity (i-QSTTR) models were developed to analyze the cross-species toxicity responses of ILs. The results revealed a strong interspecies correlation in the toxicity of ILs to D. magna and D. rerio, as well as between D. rerio and R. subcapitata. However, the correlation between D. magna and R. subcapitata was weaker, indicating significant differences in the responses of ILs toxicity between these two aquatic species. This study not only filled the data gap in the biotoxicity of ILs but also provided an important theoretical basis for their safe application.

Abstract
The review presents a detailed discussion of the evolving field studying interactions between ionic liquids (ILs) and biological systems. Originating from molten salt electrolytes to present multiapplication substances, ILs have found usage across various fields due to their exceptional physicochemical properties, including excellent tunability. However, their interactions with biological systems and potential influence on living organisms remain largely unexplored. This review examines the cytotoxic effects of ILs on cell cultures, biomolecules, and vertebrate and invertebrate organisms. Our understanding of IL toxicity, while growing in recent years, is yet nascent. The established findings include correlations between harmful effects of ILs and their ability to disturb cellular membranes, their potential to trigger oxidative stress in cells, and their ability to cause cell death via apoptosis. Future research directions proposed in the review include studying the distribution of various ILs within cellular compartments and organelles, investigating metabolic transformations of ILs in cells and organisms, detailed analysis of IL effects on proteins involved in oxidative stress and apoptosis, correlation studies between IL doses, exposure times and resulting adverse effects, and examination of effects of subtoxic concentrations of ILs on various biological objects. This review aims to serve as a critical analysis of the current body of knowledge on IL-related toxicity mechanisms. Furthermore, it can guide researchers toward the design of less toxic ILs and the informed use of ILs in drug development and medicine.

Abstract
Anions play an indispensable role in the balance and regulation of the ecological environment and human health; however, excess anions can cause serious ecological and environment problems. Therefore, the detection and removal of excess anions in aqueous solution is not only a technological problem but also crucial for environmental protection. Herein, a set of water-soluble pyrene-based cationic fluorophores were synthesized, which exhibit high sensitivity for the detection of the anions BF4-, PF6-, and ClO4- via electrostatic interactions. Such fluorescent probes exhibit "turn-on" emission characteristics even at low concentrations of anions due to anion-π+ interactions. Moreover, these fluorescence probes act as efficient precipitating agents for the removal of the BF4-, PF6-, and ClO4- anions from an aqueous environment. This work opens up new avenues for future research on pyrene-based fluorophores as turn-on fluorescence probes for anion detection and as excellent precipitating agents in environmental settings.

Abstract
With the increasing use and production of "green solvents" ionic liquids (ILs) and their known stability in the environment, the potential adverse effects of ILs have become a focus of research. In the present study, acute, chronic, and intergenerational toxic effects of an imidazolium-based ionic liquid, 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([Demim]PF6), on Moina macrocopa were investigated following the parental exposure. The results showed that [Demim]PF6 exhibited high toxicity to M. macrocopa, and the long-term exposure significantly inhibited the survivorship, development, and reproduction of the water flea. Furthermore, it is also observed that [Demim]PF6 induced toxic effects in the following generation of M. macrocopa, resulting in the complete cessation of reproduction in the first offspring generation, and the growth of the organisms was also significantly affected. These findings provided a novel insight into the intergenerational toxicity induced by ILs to crustaceans and suggested that these compounds pose potential risks to the aquatic ecosystem.

Abstract
Cyhalofop-butyl and pyribenzoxim are commonly used herbicides in rice-crayfish co-culture fields. In actual production, weed control in paddy fields is inseparable from cyhalofop-butyl and pyribenzoxim, while its risk to P. clarkii is still unclear. The present study investigated the risk of acute and subchronic toxicity of cyhalofop-butyl and pyribenzoxim to P. clarkii. The results showed that cyhalofop-butyl and pyribenzoxim exposure for 28 days could accumulate in P. clarkii muscle and inhibit P. clarkii growth. Further research found that the malondialdehyde (MDA) level and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity in muscle of P. clarkii were significantly increased after exposure to cyhalofop-butyl and pyribenzoxim (4 days and 28 days), and the superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities were significantly altered. Histological results also confirmed cyhalofop-butyl and pyribenzoxim-induced muscle damage in P. clarkii. Additionally, after 28 days exposure to 1.02 mg/L cyhalofop-butyl and 10.4 mg/L pyribenzoxim, transcriptome analysis identified 2029 and 4246 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), respectively. Exposure to 1.02 mg/L cyhalofop-butyl significantly altered metabolism-related pathways, such as drug metabolism-other enzymes, glutathione metabolism, drug metabolism-cytochrome P450, fatty acid biosynthesis and fatty acid degradation. While the pathways related to antioxidant system and nutrient substances synthesis and metabolic were significantly enriched after exposure to 10.4 mg/L pyribenzoxim. This research has significant implications for scientific and rational use of herbicides under rice-crayfish co-culture and will contribute to the development of the highly productive agricultural model.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are composed of only anions and cations and are liquid solvents at room temperature. Different functional groups were introduced into the ILs, conferring them with specific functions or purposes and thus forming special ILs, namely task-specific ILs (TSILs). Imidazolium-based ILs are the most widely used ILs in industrial production. To date, there have been some studies on the toxic effects of ILs on different organisms. However, the effect of functionalized groups on the toxicity of ILs is still unclear. In the present study, zebrafish were used as model organisms to study the toxic effects of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate ([C2mim]NO3) and 1-hydroxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate ([HOC2mim]NO3). The results showed that both promoted an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) contents, leading to lipid peroxidation and DNA damage. Furthermore, integrated biological response analysis showed that [HOC2mim]NO3 was less toxic to zebrafish than [C2mim]NO3, which indicated that adding functional groups decreased the toxicity of ILs to organisms. The influence of chemical structure on IL toxicity was also reported. These results could provide a scientific basis for better synthesis and utilization of ILs in the future.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are widely used for their physical and chemical properties. Toxicological assessments of ILs could help to avoid their threat to human health, but these are rarely reported, and no assessments of IL neurotoxicity in mammals have been performed. Here, we aimed to evaluate the neurotoxicity of chronic 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C8mim][PF6]) (0, 1 mg/kg) exposure during development on rats. Our results indicated that chronic exposure to low-dose ([C8mim][PF6]) induces behavioural abnormalities, including cognitive deficits, social communication disorders, and sensory gating function impairment. Moreover, rats subjected to chronic ([C8mim][PF6]) exposure showed hypofunction of glutamatergic excitatory synapses, including increased expression of NMDA receptor subunits, increased density and immaturity of dendritic spines, and increased expression of PSD95. Additionally, ([C8mim][PF6]) exposure resulted in hippocampal-specific inflammatory activation, indicated by increased levels of proinflammatory factors, elevated nuclear localisation of NF-κB, and activation of microglia and astrocytes. In conclusion, chronic exposure to low-dose ([C8mim][PF6]) induced neurotoxicity, including damage to glutamatergic excitatory synapses and inflammatory activation, which may illuminate the associated behavioural abnormalities. The results presented here may be helpful for the safe use of ILs in the future.

Abstract
Interest in ionic liquids (ILs), called green or designer solvents, has been increasing because of their excellent properties such as thermal stability and low vapor pressure; thus, they can replace harmful organic chemicals and help several industrial fields e.g., energy-storage materials production and biomaterial pretreatment. However, the claim that ILs are green solvents should be carefully considered from an environmental perspective. ILs, given their minimal vapor pressure, may not directly cause atmospheric pollution. However, they have the potential to cause adverse effects if leaked into the environment, for instance if they are spilled due to human mistakes or technical errors. To estimate the risks of ILs, numerous ILs have had their toxicity assessed toward several micro- and macro-organisms over the past few decades. Since the toxic effects of ILs depend on the method of estimating toxicity, it is necessary to briefly summarize and comprehensively discuss the biological effects of ILs according to their structure and toxicity testing levels. This can help simplify our understanding of the toxicity of ILs. Therefore, in this review, we discuss the key findings of toxicological information of ILs, collect some toxicity data of ILs to different species, and explain the influence of IL structure on their toxic properties. In the discussion, we estimated two different sensitivity values of toxicity testing levels depending on the experiment condition, which are theoretical magnitudes of the inherent sensitivity of toxicity testing levels in various conditions and their changes in biological response according to the change in IL structure. Finally, some perspectives, future research directions, and limitations to toxicological research of ILs, presented so far, are discussed.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) were initially hailed as a green alternative to traditional solvents because of their almost non-existent vapor pressure as ecological replacement of most common volatile solvents in industrial processes for their damaging effects on the environment. It is common knowledge that they are not as green as desired, and more thought must be put into the biological consequences of their industrial use. Still, compared to the amount of research studying their physicochemical properties and potential applications in different areas, there is a scarcity of scientific papers regarding how these substances interact with different organisms. The intent of this review was to compile the information published in this area since 2015 to allow the reader to better understand how, for example, bacteria, plants, fish, etc., react to the presence of this family of liquids. In general, lipophilicity is one of the main drivers of toxicity and thus the type of cation. The anion tends to play a minor (but not negligible) role, but more research is needed since, owing to the very nature of ILs, except for the most common ones (imidazolium and ammonium-based), many of them are subject to only one or two articles.

Abstract
As an alternative to volatile organic solvents, ionic liquids (ILs) are known as "green solvents", and widely used in industrial applications. However, due to their high solubility and stability, ILs have tendency to persist in the water environment, thus having potential negative impacts on the aquatic ecosystem. For assessing the environmental risks of ILs, a fundamental understanding of the toxic effects and mechanisms of ILs is needed. Here we evaluated the cytotoxicity of 1-methyl-3-decylimidazolium chloride ([C10mim]Cl) and elucidated the main toxic mechanism of [C10mim]Cl in human cervical carcinoma (Hela) cells. Microstructural analysis revealed that [C10mim]Cl exposure caused the cell membrane breakage, swollen and vacuolated mitochondria, and spherical cytoskeletal structure. Cytotoxicity assays found that [C10mim]Cl exposure increased ROS production, decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, induced cell apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. These results indicated that [C10mim]Cl could induce damage to cellular membrane structure, affect the integrity of cell ultrastructure, cause the oxidative damage and ultimately lead to the inhibition of cell proliferation. Moreover, alterations of biochemical information including the increased ratios of unsaturated fatty acid and carbonyl groups to lipid, and lipid to protein, and the decreased ratios of Amide I to Amide II, and α-helix to β-sheet were observed in [C10mim]Cl treated cells, suggesting that [C10mim]Cl could affect the structure of membrane lipid alkyl chain and cell membrane fluidity, promote the lipid peroxidation and alter the protein secondary structure. The findings from this work demonstrated that membrane structure is the key target, and membrane damage is involved in [C10mim]Cl induced cytotoxicity.

Abstract
The occurrence of Benzotriazole Ultraviolet Stabilizer-328 (BUV-328) in different environmental and biological matrices is of immediate environmental concern. In the present study, we evaluated the toxicity of BUV-328 in zebrafish liver tissues to understand the role of oxidative damage in hepatotoxicity. Adult zebrafish were exposed to 0.01, 0.1 and 1 mg/L of BUV-328. At the end of 14, 28 and 42 days, liver tissues were examined for the responses of antioxidant enzymes, gene expression and histopathological alterations. The results indicated that superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities were elevated at concentrations of 0.1 and 1 mg/L on 14th and 28th day. Glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were elevated in all the treated groups. The transcriptional levels of genes encoding sod, cat, gpx and gst enzymes were increased at 14th day and then declined (except sod on 28th day). Moreover, transcription of cyp1a and hsp70 were up-regulated throughout the study period. Histopathological lesions such as hypertrophy, cellular and nuclear enlargement, cytoplasmic and nuclear degeneration, necrosis with pyknotic nuclei, lipid and cytoplasmic vacuolization and nuclear displacement to the periphery were found to be increased with the dose and exposure duration. In brief, our findings indicate that even a low dose of BUV-328 is toxic to induce oxidative stress and liver damage in zebrafish over a long period of exposure.

Abstract
With the extensive use of ionic liquids (ILs) in various industrial fields, their potential toxicity to aquatic ecosystem has attracted considerable attention. In this work, biotoxicity of ILs with different cations and anions was evaluated by using a freshwater green alga Chlorella pyrenoidosa. Results showed that 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C4mim]Cl), 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C8mim]Cl), 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate ([C8mim]NO3), 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C8mim]BF4), and 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C12mim]Cl) had a significant inhibition on the algal growth with EC50 values of 23.48, 4.72, 3.80, 4.44, and 0.10 mg L-1 at the 72 h of exposure, respectively. These data suggested that the toxicity of ILs increased with the increase of side alkyl chain length, while anions had little influences on their toxicity to this alga. Moreover, changes in chlorophyll a content and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (Fv/Fm and ΦPSII) indicated that the five ILs could damage the photosynthetic system of this alga resulting in the decrease of photosynthetic efficiency. The increased soluble protein content and antioxidase activity could be considered as an active response mechanism of this alga against the exposure of ILs. Content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in this alga increased significantly when it was exposed to ILs, suggesting that reactive oxygen species (ROS) were accumulated in the algal cells, which would cause injury of the algal biofilm and chloroplast. Therefore, results obtained in this work would help to explain the possible underlying toxic mechanisms of ILs to C. pyrenoidosa, and provide a significant theoretical support for assessing the toxicity of ILs to aquatic organisms.

Abstract
The addition of different functional groups to ionic liquid anions or cations to synthesize task-specific ionic liquids (TSILs) according to specific needs has become a research hotspot. However, there are few studies on the toxicity of TSILs. We selected zebrafish (Danio rerio) to assess the toxicity of three TSILs 1-aminoethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C2NH2MIm]BF4), 1-methoxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([MOEMIm]BF4) and 1-hydroxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([HOEMIm]BF4). The 96 h median lethal concentration (96 h LC50) of the three TSILs [C2NH2MIm]BF4, [MOEMIm]BF4 and [HOEMIm]BF4 on zebrafish determined by an acute toxicity test were 143.8 mg/L, 2492.5 mg/L and 3086.7 mg/L, respectively. In the oxidative damage and DNA damage research experiments, zebrafish were exposed to [C2NH2MIm]BF4 (0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg/L), [MOEMIm]BF4 and [HOEMIm]BF4 (0, 1, 10, 50 and 100 mg/L) for 28 days, and levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST), malondialdehyde (MDA) and olive tail moment (OTM) in zebrafish liver were tested on days 7, 14, 21 and 28 after the exposure test. During the experiment, increased contents of ROS and MDA were detected; enzymatic activities especially SOD were inhibited; and DNA damage occurred in zebrafish. The toxicity of the three TSILs was compared by the integrated biomarker response (IBR). The toxicity order of three TSILs was: [MOEMIm]BF4 > [HOEMIm]BF4 > [C2NH2MIm]BF4. In addition, this study can provide a toxicological basis for application research and the evaluation of functionalized ionic liquids with low toxicity in the future.

Abstract
Concerns have been raised regarding the ecotoxicity of ionic liquids (ILs) owing to their wide usage in numerous fields. Three imidazolium chloride ILs with different numbers of methyl substituents, 1-decyl-imidazolium chloride ([C10IM]Cl), 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C10MIM]Cl), and 1-decyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium chloride ([C10DMIM]Cl), were examined to assess their effects on growth, photosynthesis pigments content, chlorophyll fluorescence, photosynthetic and respiration rate, and cellular ultrastructure of Scenedesmus obliquus. The results showed that algal growth was significantly inhibited by ILs treatments. The observed IC50,48h doses were 0.10 mg/L [C10IM]Cl, 0.01 mg/L [C10MIM]Cl, and 0.02 mg/L [C10DMIM]Cl. The chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and total chlorophyll content declined, and the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, minimal fluorescence yield (F0), maximal fluorescence yield (Fm), maximum quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm), effective quantum yield of PSII [Y(II)], non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) and non-photosynthetic losses yield [Y(NO)] were notably affected by ILs in a dose-dependent manner. ILs affected the primary photosynthetic reaction, impaired heat dissipation capability, and diminished photosynthetic efficiency, indicating negative effects on photosystem II. The photosynthetic and respiration rates of algal cells were also reduced due to the ILs treatments. The adverse effects of ILs on plasmolysis and chloroplast deformation were examined using ultrastructural analyses; chloroplast swelling and lamellar structure almost disappeared after the [C10MIM]Cl treatment, and an increased number of starch grains and vacuoles was observed after all ILs treatments. The results indicated that one-methyl-substituted ILs were more toxic than non-methyl-substituted ILs, which were also more toxic than di-methyl-substituted ILs. The toxicity of the examined ILs showed the following order: [C10IM]Cl < [C10DMIM]Cl ≤ [C10MIM]Cl.

Abstract
With the increasing applications in various industrial areas, toxicity of ionic liquids (ILs) has gained much attention in recent years. In this work, 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate ([C8mim]NO3), 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C8mim]Cl), N-octyl-3-metylpyridinium chloride ([C8mpy]Cl) and N-octyl-3-metylpyridinium bromide ([C8mpy]Br) were used to investigate the impacts of different types of cations and anions on their toxicity to a marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Results showed that the four ILs had poor degradability under the culture conditions used in this study, and significantly inhibited the growth of this diatom with 96-h EC50 values of 24.0, 33.6, 16.1 and 14.4mgL-1 for [C8mim]NO3, [C8mim]Cl, [C8mpy]Cl and [C8mpy]Br, respectively. The data indicated that types of cations and anions would affect the toxicity of ILs to this diatom. Additionally, photosynthesis of this diatom was inhibited because significant decrease of chlorophyll a content and damage of PSII reaction centers were observed when it was exposed to the four ILs. Remarkable physiological and biochemical responses occurred in the cells of this diatom to alleviate the damaging effects of the four ILs. For example, content of soluble protein and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in the cells of this diatom increased significantly to form a protective mechanism against the toxicity of ILs, although they decreased in the cultures with high concentrations of ILs (≥20mgL-1). Thus, these results would not only provide strong evidences for evaluating the ecological risks and toxicity of ILs to marine ecosystem, but also help for understanding their toxic mechanisms to marine diatoms.

Abstract
The present study aimed to determine the chronic toxicity of 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolium bromide ([C8mim]Br) on the silver carp to further reveal the toxicological mechanisms of ionic liquids. Chronic exposure of silver carp to [C8mim]Br at concentrations of 1.095 and 4.380 mg/L for 60 d was conducted under laboratory conditions. The results revealed that chronic exposure to [C8mim]Br inhibited the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels while markedly increasing malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl (PC) levels in fish spleen, indicating that [C8mim]Br treatment induced oxidative stress. Additionally, long-term exposure to [C8mim]Br markedly upregulated the expressions of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ); altered the levels of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β); and increased the mRNA levels of p38MAPK, c-fos, c-jun, and c-myc, suggesting that long-term exposure to [C8mim]Br might promote the inflammatory response in fish spleen and that p38MAPK/NF-κB signalling may potentially be involved in this process. Moreover, [C8mim]Br-exposure altered lysozyme activity and complement 3 (C3) and immunoglobulin M (IgM) content, indicating that chronic [C8mim]Br exposure also has immunotoxic effects on silver carp. Furthermore, we also found that [C8mim]Br exposure reduced miR-125b levels, altered miR-143 levels, and upregulated miR-155 and miR-21 levels, suggesting that these miRNAs may be involved in the [C8mim]Br-induced inflammatory response in fish spleen. In summary, the present study indicates that chronic exposure to [C8mim]Br induces inflammation in fish spleen and that oxidative stress-mediated p38MAPK/NF-κB signalling and miRNAs may play a key role in this process.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are gradually concerned due to their potential environmental and health risks. In this work, the chronic effects of imidazolium-based ILs, using [C14mim]Br as a representative, were evaluated using model animal Caenorhabditis elegans. Our results show that prolonged exposure (72 h) of ILs to the nematodes at concentrations of 5 and 10 mg/L induced adverse effects on the growth, locomotive behaviors and development. To explore the toxicity mechanism, lipofuscin content, ROS level and the expressions of five superoxide dismutase (SOD) genes were determined after the prolonged exposure. The lipofuscin content, ROS level and expressions of SOD genes did not show significant changes except that the expression of sod-5 was reduced by 2.7-fold following the treatment of 10 mg/L of [C14mim]Br. These results suggest that oxidative stress may not be responsible for the adverse physiological effects induced by relatively low concentrations of imidazolium-based ILs. We further determined the gene expressions of phase I detoxification enzyme cytochrome P450 (CYP), phase II detoxification enzyme UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) and ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter P-glycoprotein (PGP). The results demonstrate that CYP, UGT and PGP may be involved in the detoxification of ILs. Our findings will aid in understanding the mechanisms of both toxicity and detoxification of imidazolium-based ILs in animals.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) were considered new "green solvents" in consideration of the low volatility. Since their inception, ionic liquids (ILs) have attracted widespread attention. However, ILs were not safe enough as what we thought. The toxicity of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ILs ([C2mim]R, R = Cl-, Br-, BF4-) and 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bromine ([Cnmim]Br, n = 2, 4, 8, 10, 12) using 50% lethal concentration (LC50) were studied in the present study to enrich the toxicological information. Besides the LC50 values, the sensitivity test using potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) and residue determinations of the tested ILs were also performed. The sensitivity and dynamic changes of IL doses both catered for the stipulation that declared the accuracy of the toxicological test results, which illustrated that the alkyl-chain lengths contributed more than anions to the toxicity of the ILs described above to zebrafish. Additionally, the present study also enriched the toxicological information on imidazolium-based ILs to aquatic systems.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs), also called room temperature ILs, are widely applied in many fields on the basis of their unique physical and chemical properties. However, numerous ILs may be released into and gradually accumulate in the environment due to their extensive use and absolute solubility. The effects of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate ([Cnmim]NO3, n = 4, 6, 8) on soil pH, conductivity, cation exchange capacity, microbial biomass carbon, and microbial biomass nitrogen were examined at the doses of 1, 10, and 100 mg/kg on days 10, 20, 30, and 40. The results demonstrated that the soil pH decreased and the conductivity increased with increasing IL doses. No significant differences were observed in the soil cation-exchange capacity. All three of the tested ILs decreased the soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen. Additionally, there were few differences among the ILs with different alkyl chain lengths on the tested indicators except for the microbial biomass nitrogen. The present study addressed a gap in the literature regarding the effects of the aforementioned ILs with different alkyl side chains on the physicochemical properties of soil, and the results could provide the basic data for future studies on their toxicity to soil organisms, such as earthworms and soil microbes.

Abstract
The rapid increase in the production and practical application of ionic liquids (ILs) could pose potential threats to aquatic systems. In this study, we investigated the effects of four ILs with different cations and anions, including 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate ([HMIM]NO3), 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([HMIM]Cl), N-hexyl-3-metylpyridinium chloride ([HMPy]Cl), and N-hexyl-3-metylpyridinium bromide ([HMPy]Br), on photosystem and cellular structure of Scenedesmus obliquus. The results indicated that ILs are phytotoxic to S. obliquus. The contents of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll decreased with increasing ILs concentrations. The chlorophyll fluorescence parameters of photosynthetic system II (PSII), including minimal fluorescence yield (F0), potential efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fo), maximum quantum efficiency of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm), yield of photochemical quantum [Y(II)], and non-photochemical quenching coefficient without measuring F0' (NPQ), were all affected. This indicates that ILs could damage PSII, inhibit the primary reaction of photosynthesis, interdict the process of electron-transfer and lead to loss of heat-dissipating ability. ILs also increased cell membrane permeability of S. obliquus, influenced the cellular ultrastructure, changed the morphology of algae cells and destroyed the cell wall, cell membrane and organelles. The results indicated that imidazolium ILs had greater effect than pyridinium ILs, NO3--IL and Br--IL had greater effect than Cl--IL. To minimize threats to the environment, the structure of ILs should be taken into consideration.

Abstract
Fluoxastrobin is a new strobilurin fungicide, similar to azoxystrobin and pyraclostrobin. Before the wide application of fluoxastrobin, the present study was performed to assay the acute and chronic toxicity of fluoxastrobin on zebrafish (Danio rerio). The 96-hour median lethal concentration (96h LC50) after initiation of zebrafish exposure to fluoxastrobin was 0.51mg/L with a 95% confidence interval of 0.45 to 0.57mg/L, indicating that fluoxastrobin was highly toxic to zebrafish. As endpoints, we assayed the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA), the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and the degree of DNA damage at three different doses, 0.001, 0.01, and 0.1mg/L on days 7, 14, 21, and 28. The antioxidant enzymes partially ameliorated the ROS induced by fluoxastrobin t and were in turn inhibited by excess ROS, especially at 0.1mg/L. Lipid peroxidation and DNA damage were stimulated by ROS. The fluoxastrobin contents of the tested solutions were also determined; at the fluoxastrobin doses of 0.001, 0.01, and 0.1mg/L, the contents on day 28 were 3.9, 5.0, and 0.64% greater than those on day 0. Thus, fluoxastrobin was relatively stable in an aquatic environment. In addition, the present study provided more information regarding the toxic effects of fluoxastrobin and the scientific methods for selection and evaluation of fungicides in the future.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to assess the toxic effects of pyraclostrobin on DNA damage and antioxidant enzymatic activities in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) liver. Based on the 96-h median lethal concentration (96 h LC50, 0.056 mg/L) of this chemical, fish were exposed to three doses (0.001, 0.01, and 0.02 mg/L) and sampled on days 7, 14, 21 and 28 after the initiation of a subchronic toxicity test. The levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione S-transferase (GST), reactive oxygen species (ROS) and DNA damage were determined. The amount of pyraclostrobin residue in the water was also measured. The concentrations in the three treatment groups varied no more than 5% during the exposure periods, indicating that pyraclostrobin is relatively stable during this time in an aquatic environment. ROS and MDA levels significantly changed in a dose dependent manner during the experiment. Enzymatic activities were inhibited to a certain extent. DNA damage was significantly enhanced. These results collectively indicate that pyraclostrobin induces oxidative stress and DNA damage in zebrafish.

Abstract
Given their increasingly widespread application, the toxic effects of ionic liquids (ILs) have become the subject of significant attention in recent years. Therefore, the present study assessed the acute toxic effects of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate ([Cnmim]NO3 (n = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12)) on Chlorella vulgaris and Daphnia magna. The sensitivity of the tested organism Daphnia magna and the investigated IL concentrations in water using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were also evaluated to demonstrate the reliability of the present study. The results illustrated that Daphnia magna is indeed sensitive to the reference toxicant and the investigated ILs were stable in the aquatic environment. The 50% effect concentration (EC50) was used to represent the acute toxic effects on Chlorella vulgaris and Daphnia magna. With the increasing alkyl-chain lengths, the toxicity of the investigated ILs increased in both the test organisms. Accordingly, the alkyl-chain lengths can cause significantly toxic effects on aquatic organisms, and Daphnia magna are much more sensitive than Chlorella vulgaris to the imidazolium-based ILs used in the present study. Furthermore, the present study provides more information on the acute toxic effects of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate.

Growth and physiological responses of a marine diatom (Phaeodactylum tricornutum) against two imidazolium-based ionic liquids ([C 4mim]BF 4 and [C 8mim]BF 4). Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) have been considered as "green" substitutes for traditional organic solvents in many existing biological and chemical areas. However, they have high solubility and poor biodegradability in water, suggesting that they could become persistent chemical pollutants in aquatic environment. The ability of two widely used imidazolium-based ILs to affect the growth and physiological characteristics of a marine diatom (Phaeodactylum tricornutum) was investigated in this study. The diatom was exposed to different concentrations of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C4mim]BF4) and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C8mim]BF4) for 96h within a batch-culture system. Results showed that [C4mim]BF4 and [C8mim]BF4 were very stable in seawater during 96h of exposure, and the compounds significantly inhibited the growth of P. tricornutum with 24, 48, 72 and 96h EC50 values of 30.81, 28.53, 39.92, 45.88mgL-1 and 30.17, 23.36, 28.62, 31.37mgL-1, respectively. In addition, the photosynthetic activity and chlorophyll a synthesis of P. tricornutum were inhibited by [C4mim]BF4 and [C8mim]BF4, indicating that the structural integrity of chloroplasts of the diatom may be disrupted or damaged by the two ILs. Compared with that of the controls, reactive oxygen species (ROS) level was increased by 0.65, 1.17, 1.85, 3.13, 2.94 times and 0.55, 1.77, 2.42, 3.45, 3.47 times in 5, 10, 20, 40 and 60mgL-1 [C4mim]BF4 and [C8mim]BF4 treatments, respectively. The excessive ROS may cause lipid peroxidation, shortage of metabolic energy and decline of photosynthetic efficiency, which may be the main reason for toxicity of the two ILs to marine diatoms. To withstand the damaging effects of excessive ROS, remarkable physiological and biochemical responses occurred in treatments with the two ILs to protect the cells of P. tricornutum. Parameters such as soluble protein content, soluble sugar content, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activities of the diatom increased significantly with increasing concentrations of the two ILs at 96h of exposure relative to the controls. These findings not only provide strong background for evaluating the ecological risks and toxicity of ILs in marine environment, but also help to unravel the toxic mechanism of the two ILs to marine diatoms.

Abstract
With the increasing applications of ionic liquids (ILs), the toxicity of ILs has drawn increasing attention in recent years, especially the influences of different anions and alkyl-chain lengths on the acute toxicity to aquatic organisms. We performed a study on the acute toxicity of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate ([Cnmim]NO3 (n=2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12)), 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium ILs ([C6mim]R (R=Cl-, Br-, BF4-, PF6-)) to zebrafish (Danio rerio). We also evaluated the sensibility of the investigated animals and the stability of ILs in water via high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC, Agilent 1260, Agilent Technologies Inc., USA) to prove the reliability of the present study. The results illustrated that the test zebrafish (Danio rerio) were sensitive to the reference toxicant and that the investigated ILs in water were stable. The 50% lethal concentration (LC50) was used to represent the acute toxicity to zebrafish (Danio rerio). The present study showed that the highest toxic IL is [C12mim]NO3 and the lowest toxic IL is [C2mim]NO3 on Danio rerio. The LC50s for ILs with different anions had similar values. Accordingly, we believe that ILs with different alkyl-chain lengths cause greater effects than other anions on acute toxicity to aquatic organisms. Furthermore, the present study can also provide scientific methods for future studies to select and assess ILs.

Abstract
Recently, some researchers have pointed out that the threats of ionic liquids (ILs) to aquatic environment cannot be ignored. Thus, this study investigated the potential toxicity of 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C12mim]BF4) on a marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum at population, biochemical and physiological levels using 96h growth tests with a batch-culture system. Results showed that [C12mim]BF4 was very stable in aquatic environment during 96h of exposure. The growth of P. tricornutum was significantly inhibited by [C12mim]BF4 with 24, 48, 72 and 96h EC50 values of 0.63, 0.61, 0.68 and 0.72mgL-1, respectively. Although there were no significant differences between the controls and treatments with 0.1 and 0.5mgL-1 [C12mim]BF4, the effective quantum yields (ΦPSII) of the diatom in 1, 2.5, 5 and 10mgL-1 [C12mim]BF4 treatments were 61.48, 17.04, 2.96 and 0.74% of that in the controls at 96h of exposure, respectively. Chl a content of the diatom was decreased by 34.86, 47.79, 49.81, 59.21, 79.82 and 86.98% compared with that of the controls at 96h of exposure in 0.1, 0.5, 1, 2.5, 5 and 10mgL-1 [C12mim]BF4 treatments, respectively. Relative to the controls, soluble sugar content, reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activities of the diatom increased with increasing [C12mim]BF4 concentrations at 96h of exposure, and reached their maxima (1.46μg106cell-1, 7.48FU107cell-1, 3.35nmol108cell-1, 33.41 and 7.23Umg-1 proteins, respectively) in 5mgL-1 [C12mim]BF4 treatments. While the maximum soluble protein content (1.56μg106cell-1) of the diatom was obtained in 0.5mgL-1 [C12mim]BF4 treatments, and then decreased with increasing [C12mim]BF4 concentrations from 0.5 to 10mgL-1. These findings provide strong evidence for the potential toxicity of ILs to marine diatoms.

Abstract
The present study examined the potential toxicity of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Bmim]Cl) and 1-butyl-3- methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Bmim]BF4) in the liver cells of zebrafish (Danio rerio) with different doses (20-160mg/L) on 7 and 14days. The effects of [Bmim]Cl and [Bmim]BF4 on acute toxicity, reactive oxygen species (ROS), antioxidant enzymes, glutathione S-transferase (GST), malondialdehyde (MDA), and DNA damage degree in livers of zebrafish were determined. The 50% lethal concentration (LC50) values after a 96-h exposure to [Bmim]Cl and [Bmim]BF4 were 632.8±67.4 and 604.6±56.2mg/L, respectively, which indicated that the substances were practically harmless. The minor discrepancy may be caused by the different anions. The ROS levels were dose-dependent, which may cause the inhibition of antioxidant enzyme activity, lipid peroxidation, DNA damage and the stimulation of detoxifying enzyme activity. The present study can also provide scientific support for the future selection and evaluation of ionic liquids (ILs).

Abstract
We have tested silicones containing 2% or 5% of the cationic biocides polyhexamethylene guanidine dodecylbenzenesulfonate (PHMG-DBS), 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (OMIM-BF4) or 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (DMIM-BF4) against the major relevant bacterial and yeast species in health care-associated infections (HCAI). Study conducted according to the international standard ISO 22196 revealed that silicones containing 2% or 5% DMIM-BF4 or 5% PHMG-DBS presented the highest antimicrobial activity, leading to a logarithmic growth reduction of 3.03 to 6.46 and 3.65 to 4.85 depending on the bacterial or fungal species. Heat-pretreated silicones containing 2% DMIM-BF4 kept a high activity, with at least a 3-log reduction in bacterial growth, except against P. aeruginosa where there was only a 1.1-log reduction. After 33days, the release ratio of cationic biocide from silicone films containing 5% of DMIM-BF4 was found to be 5.6% in pure water and 1.9% in physiological saline solution, respectively. No leaching of PHMG-DBS polymeric biocide was detected under the same conditions. These results demonstrate unambiguously that silicones containing 2% DMIM-BF4 or 5% PHMG-DBS present high antimicrobial activity, as well as high leaching resistance and therefore may be good candidates for the development of safer medical devices.

Toxic effects of ionic liquid 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate on soil enzyme activity and soil microbial community diversity. ECOTOXICOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY 2017; 135:201-208. [PMID: 27741461 DOI: 10.1016/j.ecoenv.2016.09.026] [Citation(s) in RCA: 11] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.4] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/30/2016] [Revised: 09/26/2016] [Accepted: 09/27/2016] [Indexed: 06/06/2023]
Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) were considered as "green" solvents and have been used widely because of their excellent properties. But ILs are not as "green" as has been suggested, and the toxic effects of ILs on organisms have been shown in recent years. In the present study, the toxic effects of the IL 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Omim]BF4) on soil enzyme activity and soil microbial communities at three different concentrations (1.0, 5.0 and 10.0mg/kg) and a control treatment over 40 days of incubation time (sampled on days 10, 20, 30 and 40) were examined under laboratory conditions. The concentrations of [Omim]BF4 in soils were detected by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the results indicated that [Omim]BF4 were maintained stable in the soil during the exposure period. However, the enzyme activity results showed that urease activity was stimulated on day 20 and then decreased after 30 days of incubation. The activity of β-glucosidase was stimulated after 20 days of incubation in both treatment groups. Moreover, both dehydrogenase and acid phosphatase were inhibited at a high level (10.0mg/kg) only on day 20. The analysis of terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) revealed that the soil microbial community structures were altered by [Omim]BF4 and that the soil microbial diversity and evenness of high levels (5.0mg/kg and 10.0mg/kg) treatments were decreased. Moreover, the dominant structure of the microbial communities was not changed by [Omim]BF4. Furthermore, the abundance of the ammonia monooxygenase (amoA) genes of both ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) was examined using real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The results revealed that the copy numbers of the amoA-gene were decreased by [Omim]BF4 with the 5.0 and 10.0mg/kg treatments. Based on the experiment, we concluded that high levels (5.0 and 10.0mg/kg) of [Omim]BF4 could have significantly toxic effects on soil enzyme activities and the diversity of the microbial communities.
