Metal pollution in biotic and abiotic samples of the Büyük Menderes River, Turkey

Trace element levels in the muscles of three tern species (Aves: Laridae) from the western Arabian Gulf: environmental assessment and implications for conservation

In the Arabian Gulf (called also Persian Gulf; hereafter 'the Gulf'), Jana and Karan Islands are recognized as one of the most Important Bird Areas in the region. Many migratory breeding seabirds, like the Greater Crested Tern Thalasseus bergii, White-cheeked Tern Sterna repressa and Bridled Tern Onychoprion anaethetus, depend on these islands during the breeding season. However, these aquatic wildlife species are suffering from intensified urban and industrial coastal development and various contamination events including wars and related oil spills. In this study, we used these three piscivorous top predator birds to analyse the levels of 19 trace elements (TEs; i.e. Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Sr, V and Zn) in 15 muscular tissue samples from Jana and Karan Islands. PERMANOVA analysis showed no difference in contamination profile between sites nor between species probably due to their spatial and ecological proximity and therefore similar levels of exposure to TEs. Comparing these levels with existing literature, our results showed no particular concern for all elements, except for Al (maximum values recorded = 116.5 µg g-1 d.w.) and, in two samples, Ba (33.67 µg g-1 d.w.) and Pb (5.6 µg g-1 d.w.). The results can be considered as an initial step for supplementary evaluations with a larger number of samples and specified time intervals for the collection of specimens. This study provided baseline information on the pollution status of these two ecologically important sites which require a continuous biomonitoring programme.

Monte Carlo simulation and delayed geochemical hazard revealed the contamination and risk of arsenic in natural water sources

Due to its ubiquity and carcinogenicity, the geochemical behavior and health risks of arsenic (As) have been a research focus worldwide. A comprehensive investigation was conducted on the contamination and ecological and health risks of As in the Zijiang River (ZR)-a natural water source. The concentration ranges of As were separately 1.36-6.23 μg/L, 11.42-74.53 mg/kg, and 1.26-130.68 μg/L in surface waters (dissolved), sediments, and pore waters. The concentrations of As in the midstream pore waters and sediments were relatively high, which was related to mining, dam interception, and sediment resuspension. The Monte Carlo simulation results showed that the occurrence probability of As contamination and static risk in sediments was low, however, in the midstream, the secondary risk caused by the release of As should be given more consideration. In the sediments, the transformation paths and the dynamic risk of As were explored based on the delayed geochemical hazard model, showing that there was a probability of a potential burst of 26.47% - 55.88% in the sediments of the ZR. Although at the detected surface waters, the total risk of the noncarcinogenicity and carcinogenicity of As were low, overall adults have lower health risks than children, and As exposure in children should be of concern. This study complements the further understanding of the geochemical behavior of arsenic, which can be extended to other toxic metal(loid)s.

Occurrence, distribution, and migration of antimony in the Zijiang River around a superlarge antimony deposit zone

Under the environmental changes associated with mine tributaries entering mainstream rivers, differences in the distributions and migration behaviors of metal(loid)s can be found, but the behavior of antimony (Sb) is still poorly understood in this regard. We analyzed the occurrence, distribution, migration, and influencing factors of the Sb concentration in the water body of the Zijiang River (ZR) around a superlarge Sb deposit zone. The total Sb concentrations were 1.45-15.66 μg/L, 3.16-133.63 mg/kg, and 0.83-41.82 μg/L in the ZR surface waters, sediments, and pore waters, respectively; Sb(V) was the predominant form of Sb found in the surface waters. Mining and smelting were the main sources of Sb in the ZR. Spatially, the Sb concentration showed a decreasing trend from the tributaries to the ZR mainstream. In the ZR, the surface-water Sb concentration showed an increasing trend from the upstream to the downstream, while in the sediments and pore waters, the midstream Sb concentrations were higher than the upstream and downstream concentrations; this finding was related to the sediment retention and accumulation behaviors of reservoirs and dams resulting in the secondary release of Sb in sediments. Sb tended to be bound to the solid phase, dominated by amorphous iron (Fe)/aluminum (Al) oxides and calcium in sediments. This study highlights that, based on current Sb migration patterns, the accumulation of sediments carried by tributaries near Sb mines in the midstream ZR and the Sb pollution caused by sediment release will be long-term, and the related environmental consequences need to be further predicted.

Environmental impact of fish farming: assessment of metal contamination and sediment geochemistry at three aquaculture areas from the eastern Aegean coast

Metal contamination and geochemistry of surface sediments were assessed at three aquaculture sites from the eastern Aegean coast. The chlorophyll degradation products and organic carbon levels were used as indicators of eutrophication status. In Akköy, higher Hg, Pb, and Cd levels were observed around the cages, while maximum concentrations of other elements were determined at stations situated near the Büyük Menderes River estuary. Metal concentrations were less than the central Aegean coast background levels other than Zn, Ni, and Cr in Akköy. Several approximations have been utilized to evaluate potential toxicity of sediments and sediment quality guidelines (SQG) were used to estimate the risks for aquatic life. Ni was the only metal with concentrations exceeding all SQG values, which indicates the highest adverse biological effect in Ildır, Akköy, and occasionally toxic in Güllük. Based on Q_PEL and Q_TEL, Ni and Cr were the predominant metal contaminants in all areas. Similarly, Cr and Ni account for the most of the all sediment toxicity in the aquaculture areas according to toxic risk index. It is concluded that sediments around the fish farms are affected by growing input of elements because of aquaculture activity. The levels of chlorophyll degradation products showed oligotrophic and mesotrophic conditions in the three studied aquaculture areas.

Evaluation of the impact of heterogeneous environmental pollutants on benthic macroinvertebrates and water quality by long-term monitoring of the buyuk menderes river basin

Biomonitoring is a significant method for evaluating aquatic life forms and their environments. The longer the process continues, the results of it become more precise. Benthic macroinvertebrates' exposure to changes in environmental conditions makes them an important part of any biomonitoring program. This paper reviews a long-term water quality of the Buyuk Menderes River Basin which is the biggest river basin spread across the western Anatolia (Turkey). The study area was divided into three regions (Usak, Aydin, Denizli), primarily considering the provincial borders in the basin. A total of 40 sampling sites from the main river and its tributaries were selected. The prominent agricultural and industrial pollutants (textile, tannery and sugar factories) from each region have been taken into account. The most common and current biotic indices (BMWP Spanish version, ASPT, RBPIII, MMIF, EPT%, Diversity and Evenness) based on the pollution tolerance of benthic macroinvertebrates have been used to track water quality changes. The relationships between environmental variables (sO₂, dO₂, water temp., salinity, flow, TDS, Cond, pH, NO₃-N, NO₂-N, PO₄-P, Fe⁺³, NH₄-N) and bioindicators have been revealed by using multivariate analyses (NMDS, CCA). The region-based variations in water quality were compared with the Kruskal-Wallis test. The one-way variance analysis test (ANOVA) was used for the contrast between the biotic indices. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found among the regions in terms of Shannon-Wiener, Evenness, BMWP and MMIF indices. Regions were separated according to pollution sources, and the impact of provinces on water quality may vary according to their industry types. It has been observed that pollutants can spread across a basin for very long distances and reinstatement of the environmental conditions may require long periods.

Evaluation of health risks from exposure to arsenic and heavy metals through consumption of ten fish species

In this study, the levels of 11 heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) were determined in ten different fish species (wild, farmed, freshwater, and marine) frequently consumed in Turkey and compared with the maximum permissible limits (MPLs) established by international standards. Also, human health risks for the consumers were assessed. Among 11 HMs, only Al and Cr levels did not show significant differences among fish species. The highest concentrations of As were found in red mullet, which is a demersal fish. The average concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, and Pb in all fish species were below the MPLs, whereas those of Zn in European anchovy and Mediterranean horse mackerel, and that of inorganic As in red mullet exceeded the MPLs. The highest and lowest toxic metal contents (Al, As, Cd, and Pb) were recorded in red mullet and farmed rainbow trout, respectively. The estimated daily intakes of HMs in each fish species were very lower than their corresponding tolerable daily intakes, suggesting the daily intake of HMs through fish consumption would not pose health risks for the consumers. The target hazard quotient for individual HMs and hazard index for combined HMs in fish species were below 1, which indicated that non-carcinogenic health effects are not expected. The carcinogenic risk results revealed that there was a carcinogenic risk from exposure to inorganic As via the consumption of red mullet. Among all investigated fish species, rainbow trout and common carp were safer in terms of both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks from exposure to HMs.

Lead (Pb) in the tissues of Anatidae, Ardeidae, Sternidae and Laridae of the Northern Hemisphere: a review of environmental studies

Due to the ability of birds to travel long distances in the air, the potential feeding area of each individual is much larger than that of typical terrestrial animals. This makes birds a convenient indicator of environmental lead (Pb) pollution over large areas, in particular areas of inland and coastal waters. The aim of this study was to assess the concentrations of Pb in various organs of water birds from a variety of locations. The focus was on ducks, geese and swans (Anatidae); herons and egrets (Ardeidae); terns (Sternidae); and gulls (Laridae). This article describes the level of lead in the most commonly studied tissue types: feathers, bones and the liver. The study also presents data concerning the concentration of lead in the eggs of water birds. The highest levels of lead pollution can be observed in China and Korea, related to their high level of industrialization. In Iran too, environmental lead pollution is high, likely due to the developed petrochemical industry. Lead pollution in Japan, as well as in Western European countries (Spain, France, Italy), seems to be much lower than in China, India or Iran. Nevertheless, the level of pollution in Europe is higher than satisfactory, despite the introduction of a number of bans related to, for example, the use of leaded petrol or lead-containing paints. Finally, the USA and Canada appear to be the areas with the lowest lead pollution, possibly due to their low population densities.

Enrichment of trace elements in colonies of the yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) in the Atlantic Islands National Park (Galicia-NW Spain)

Marine-derived nutrients are known accumulate in seabird breeding colonies due to the deposition of nutrient-rich biological materials, thus greatly altering the functioning and dynamics of these terrestrial ecosystems. Here we present the results of a sampling survey carried out during three years in yellow-legged gull colonies in the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park (NW Spain) with the aim of evaluating the influence of the colonies on the accumulation of trace elements, including micronutrients (Cu, Zn, Se, Co, Mo, Ni) and toxic elements (Cr, Cd, Hg, Pb, As, Ag), in the surrounding environments. For this purpose, we analysed samples of biological materials produced by the seabirds (pellets, excrement, feathers, eggs) and of soil, plants and inland water from several different subcolonies and control zones without seabirds. The concentrations of most of the elements were higher in excrement and pellets (mean values: Zn: 152, As: 50 mg kg^-1, Cd: 6, Co: 5 mg kg^-1) than in feathers and eggs. The flow of trace elements into the breeding colonies, considering only the excrement, revealed a very high level of trace element deposition for a supposedly pristine environment (Zn: 2667, Cd: 70, Cu: 315, As: 64 g ha^-1). The total concentrations of trace elements in soil were consistent with the long-term impact of the seabirds. Thus, the values in areas which this impact was greatest were significantly higher than in the control zones, particularly considering the most labile geochemical fractions of the soil. The concentrations of some elements (i.e. Co, As, Cd) were also higher in the inland waters in the colonies than in control zones. Finally, the concentration of trace elements in plants varied depending on the species and element considered.

Human health risks of Hg, As, Mn, and Cr through consumption of fish, Ticto barb (Puntius ticto) from a tropical river, Bangladesh

Metals tend to accumulate in higher organisms, e.g., fish and human through biomagnification effects in food chain. So, their presence in any component of the environment has become a global ecosystem and health concern. Here, we measured four health concerned metals like As, Cr, Mn, and Hg via inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and analyzed applying some chemometrics for the assessment of human health risk through consumption of Puntius ticto, a very commonly consumed small fish in Bangladesh. The average concentration (wet weight) of metals was in the following descending order: Hg (0.006 mg/kg) > Cr (0.004 mg/kg) > Mn (0.003 mg/kg) > As (0.002 mg/kg). Hg level exceeded the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI), and all other metals were within the permissible limit. The estimated daily intake (EDI) index of heavy metals showed that all the concentration levels were under the recommended daily intake (RDA) except Hg. Increased level of Hg is of particular concern to human health due to its biomagnification nature and can cause several neurological and physiological disorders including kidney failure. The total target hazard quotients (TTHQs) and carcinogenic risk (CR) matrices revealed that the intakes of Hg and As through fish consumption were higher than the recommended values, indicating consumers' remain non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic (THQ > 1; CR > 10^-5) health risks for lifetime consumption. Multivariate analyses (cluster and principal component) explained the sources of heavy metals in the study area originating from both anthropogenic and geological origin.

Heavy metal pollution in immobile and mobile components of lentic ecosystems-a review

With growing population and urbanization, there is an increasing exploitation of natural resources, and this often results to environmental pollution. In this review, the levels of heavy metal in lentic compartments (water, sediment, fishes, and aquatic plants) over the past two decades (1997-2017) have been summarized to evaluate the current pollution status of this ecosystem. In all the compartments, the heavy metals dominated are zinc followed by iron. The major reason could be area mineralogy and lithogenic sources. Enormous quantity of metals like iron in estuarine sediment is a very natural incident due to the permanently reducing condition of organic substances. Contamination of cadmium, lead, and chromium was closely associated with anthropogenic origin. In addition, surrounding land use and atmospheric deposition could have been responsible for substantial pollution. The accumulation of heavy metals in fishes and aquatic plants is the result of time-dependent deposition in lentic ecosystems. Moreover, various potential risk assessment methods for heavy metals were discussed. This review concludes that natural phenomena dominate the accumulation of essential heavy metals in lentic ecosystems compared to anthropogenic sources. Amongst other recent reviews on heavy metals from other parts of the world, the present review is executed in such a way that it explains the presence of heavy metals not only in water environment, but also in the whole of the lentic system comprising sediment, fishes, and aquatic plants.

Heavy metal and arsenic concentrations in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farmed in a dam reservoir on the Firat (Euphrates) River: Risk-based consumption advisories

The concentrations of ten metals in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farmed in the Karakaya Dam Reservoir (Turkey) on the Firat River were determined. The metal concentrations in rainbow trout did not exceed the maximum permissible levels. Biomagnification factors (BMF) of ten metals were <1, indicating that these metals were not biomagnified. The estimated daily intake (EDI) of each metal was much lower than the respective tolerable daily intake (TDI). The target hazard quotient (THQ) for individual metal and total THQ for combined metals were lower than 1, indicating no health risk for consumers due to the intake of either individual metal or combined metals. The cancer risk (CR) value for toxic inorganic As was below 10^-6, indicating no carcinogenic risk. According to the calculated maximum allowable consumption rates (CR_mm), an adult may safely consume 28 meals of rainbow trout from the dam reservoir per month with no adverse carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health effects. According to these results, the consumption of rainbow trout farmed in this dam reservoir is completely safe for human health.
