Electrospun and functionalized PVDF/PAN nanocatalyst-loaded composite for dechlorination and photodegradation of pesticides in contaminated water

Metal nanostructures in polymeric matrices for optical detection and removal of heavy metal ions, pesticides and dyes from water

Water pollutants such as heavy metal ions, pesticides, and dyes pose a worldwide issue. Their presence in water resources interferes with the normal growth mechanisms of living beings and causes long or short-term diseases. For this reason, research continuously tends to develop innovative, selective, and efficient processes or technologies to detect and remove pollutants from water. This review provides an up-to-date overview on metal nanoparticles loaded in polymeric matrices, such as hydrogels and membranes, and employed as optical sensors and as removing materials for water pollutants. The synthetic pathways of nanomaterials loading into polymeric matrices have been analyzed, particularly focusing on noble metal nanoparticles, noble metal nanoclusters, and metal oxide nanoparticles. Moreover, the sensing properties of modified matrices towards water pollutants have been discussed in addition to the interaction mechanisms between the sensors and the toxic compounds. The last part of the review has been devoted to illustrating the separation mechanism and removal performance of membranes loaded with nanomaterials in the treatment and purification of water streams from different contaminants (heavy metals, dyes and pesticides).

Advances in electrospun materials for the adsorption and separation of environmental pollutants: A comprehensive review

Despite a broad range of new techniques developed, adsorption methods remain one of the technologies of choice for the removal of contaminants. However, significant progress has also been made in these, which finds reflection in a new spectrum of adsorbents that can be used. This comprehensive review discusses properties, advantages, and perspectives on the use of custom-made electrospun adsorbents in the processes of heavy metals, agrochemicals, and microplastic contaminants removal from the environment. It presents the versatility and adaptability of materials that can be used as electrospun fibers matrix, also considering the mechanism and parameters of the sorption process carried out with them. The presented review proves, that due to the use of new, custom-made sorbents, such as electrospun materials, the adsorption processes still possess great application potential and development opportunities to provide an attractive and effective alternative to other remediation techniques.

Probing the effect of precursor concentration on the growth and properties of titanium dioxide nanocones for environment safe solar cells

Environment friendly third-generation solar cells sensitized by dyes, quantum dots, and perovskites are seen as promising energy alternatives. Among the various strategies, employing one-dimensional nanostructures that exemplify the smallest dimension for efficient carrier transport rate from the active layer to electron transport layer (ETL) in photovoltaic devices is attempted in this work. We herein report the synthesis of well-aligned 1-D TiO2 nanocones as ETL for photovoltaic thin films by varying the precursor concentration (0.03 M, 0.04 M, 0.05 M) to track the evolution of growth. The hydrothermal approach is exploited to grow oriented rutile TiO2 nanocones on fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) under neutral conditions. The examination of phase, crystallinity, morphology, and opto-electronic properties of the well-structured nanocone arrays is characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), ultra violet diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS), Brunnauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, and field-dependent dark and photoconductivity analysis. The XRD pattern confirms the formation of the tetragonal rutile phase. SEM micrographs and UV-DRS spectroscopy reveals that the length of the nanocones and the energy gap is found to be maximum for 0.04 M concentration with a well-defined excitation band at 316 nm. Significantly, a strong light-trapping effect that decreases the incident light reflections and correspondingly increases the light absorption is unveiled through photoconductive studies for the TiO2 nanocones at 0.04 M having a surface area of 81.767 m2/g. The investigation essentially suggests that the as-prepared one-dimensional nanostructures would serve as efficient photoanodes in environment safe third-generation solar cells.

Polymeric membranes functionalized with nanomaterials (MP@NMs): A review of advances in pesticide removal

The excessive contamination of drinking water sources by pesticides has a pernicious impact on human health and the environment since only 0.1% of pesticides is utilized effectively to control the and the rest is deposited in the environment. Filtration by polymeric membranes has become a promising technique to deal with this problem; however, the scientific community, in the need to find better pesticide retention results, has begun to meddle in the functionalization of polymeric membranes. Given the great variety of membrane, polymer, and nanomaterial synthesis methods present in the market, the possibilities of obtaining membranes that adjust to different variables and characteristics related to a certain pesticide are relatively extensive, so it is expected that this technology will represent one of the main pesticide removal strategies in the future. In this direction, this review focused on, - the main characteristics of the nanomaterials and their impact on pristine polymeric membranes; - the removal performance of functionalized membranes; and - the main mechanisms by which membranes can retain pesticides. Based on these insights, the functionalized polymeric membranes can be considered as a promising technology in the removal of pesticides since the removal performance of this technology against pesticide showed a significant increase. Obtaining membranes that adjust to different variables and characteristics related to a certain pesticide are relatively extensive, so it is expected that functionalized membrane technology will represent one of the main pesticide removal strategies in the future.

A comprehensive review on preparation, functionalization and recent applications of nanofiber membranes in wastewater treatment

The direct discharge of significant amounts of polluted water into water bodies causes adverse ecological and human health effects. This severe deterioration in water quality creates significant challenges to meet the growing demand for clean water. Therefore, the world urgently needs environmentally friendly advanced technology to overcome this global crisis. In this regard, nanofiber-based membrane filtration is a promising technique in wastewater remediation because of their huge surface area, extremely porous structure, amenable pore size/pore size distribution, variety of material choices, and flexibility to modification with other functional materials. However, despite their unique properties, fouling, poor mechanical properties, shrinkage, and deformation are major drawbacks of nanofiber membranes for treating wastewater. This review presents a comprehensive overview of nanofiber membranes' fabrication and function in water purification applications as well as providing novel approaches to overcoming/alleviating the mentioned disadvantages. The review first presents nanofiber membrane preparation methods, focusing on electrospinning as a versatile and viable technique alongside discussing the parameters controlling nanofiber morphology. Afterward, the functionalization of nanofiber membranes by combining them with other nanomaterials, such as metal and metal-oxide nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, metal-organic frameworks, and biomolecules, were demonstrated and discussed. In addition, nanofiber membranes functionalized with microorganisms were highlighted. Finally, we introduced and discussed in detail the most relevant and recent advances in nanofiber applications in wastewater treatment in the context of removing different pollutants (e.g., heavy metals, nutrients, radioactive elements, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products, dyes, and pesticides). Moreover, the promising antimicrobial ability of nanofiber membranes in removing microorganisms from wastewater has been fully underscored. We believe this comprehensive review could provide researchers with preliminary data and guide both researchers and producers engaged in the nanofiber membrane industry, letting them focus on the research gaps in wastewater treatment.

Enzyme- and Relative Humidity-Responsive Antimicrobial Fibers for Active Food Packaging

Active food packaging materials that are sustainable, biodegradable, and capable of precise delivery of antimicrobial active ingredients (AIs) are in high demand. Here, we report the development of novel enzyme- and relative humidity (RH)-responsive antimicrobial fibers with an average diameter of 225 ± 50 nm, which can be deposited as a functional layer for packaging materials. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), zein (protein), and starch were electrospun to form multistimuli-responsive fibers that incorporated a cocktail of both free nature-derived antimicrobials such as thyme oil, citric acid, and nisin and cyclodextrin-inclusion complexes (CD-ICs) of thyme oil, sorbic acid, and nisin. The multistimuli-responsive fibers were designed to release the free AIs and CD-ICs of AIs in response to enzyme and RH triggers, respectively. Enzyme-responsive release of free AIs is achieved due to the degradation of selected polymers, forming the backbone of the fibers. For instance, protease enzyme can degrade zein polymer, further accelerating the release of AIs from the fibers. Similarly, RH-responsive release is obtained due to the unique chemical nature of CD-ICs, enabling the release of AIs from the cavity at high RH. The successful synthesis of CD-ICs of AIs and incorporation of antimicrobials in the structure of the multistimuli-responsive fibers were confirmed by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. Fibers were capable of releasing free AIs when triggered by microorganism-exudated enzymes in a dose-dependent manner and releasing CD-IC form of AIs in response to high relative humidity (95% RH). With 24 h of exposure, stimuli-responsive fibers significantly reduced the populations of foodborne pathogenic bacterial surrogates Escherichia coli (by ∼5 log unit) and Listeria innocua (by ∼5 log unit), as well as fungi Aspergillus fumigatus (by >1 log unit). More importantly, the fibers released more AIs at 95% RH than at 50% RH, which resulted in a higher population reduction of E. coli at 95% RH. Such biodegradable, nontoxic, and multistimuli-responsive antimicrobial fibers have great potential for broad applications as active and smart packaging systems.

Alkali promoted the adsorption of toluene by adjusting the surface properties of lignin-derived carbon fibers

The lignin-based carbon fibers were prepared by electrospinning followed by stabilization, carbonization, and activation (i.e., steam activation, one-step KOH activation, and metal activation). The effect of carbonization temperature on prepared carbon fibers (CFs) was investigated. As a result, 800 °C is the most suitable carbonization temperature because the prepared carbon fibers possess greater specific surface area and pore volume. With the help of various characterization methods, the structural characteristics of the activated carbon fibers (ACFs) prepared by the three activation methods and the adsorption performance of toluene were compared. It was observed that the activated carbon fibers prepared by KOH one-step activation method (ACFK) exhibited higher specific surface area (1147.16 m²/g) and greater toluene adsorption (463 mg/g). Particularly, abundant microporous structures and surface functional groups play a vital role in the adsorption process. Further, the adsorption performance of toluene onto ACFK was further investigated in a gas-phase dynamic adsorption system and the results showed that ACFK has great potential application in adsorption of volatile organic compounds.

Electrospun Nanofibers Embedding ZnO/Ag2CO3/Ag2O Heterojunction Photocatalyst with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

The immobilization of photocatalyst onto substrate has a great potential for energy-intensive separation to avoid the costly separation process and unwanted release of photocatalyst into the treated water. In this study, electrospun nanofiber composed of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) with the immobilized ZnO, ZnO/Ag2CO3, ZnO/Ag2CO3/Ag2O, and ZnO/Ag2O photocatalysts were prepared via the electrospinning process. The immobilized ZnO and heterojunctioned ZnO in the PVDF electrospun nanofiber were proven via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The electrospinning allowed high chemical binding of the nanofiber composite with good physical interaction between the photocatalyst and the electrospun nanofiber. AFM images obtained for the nanofibers were found to be rougher than that of the pristine PVDF electrospun nanofiber. Among the photocatalyst embedded, the immobilized ZnO/Ag2CO3/Ag2O had endowed the nanofiber with an excellent photocatalytic activity and recyclability for the degradation of the RR120 under UV light irradiation. Based on the results, effective immobilization of ZnO/Ag2CO3/Ag2O in PVDF nanofiber with 99.62% photodegradation in 300 min compared to PVDF-ZnO, PVDF-ZnO/Ag2CO3, and PVDF-ZnO/Ag2O of 28.14%, 90.49%, and 96.34%, respectively. The effective ZnO/Ag2CO3/Ag2O immobilization into polymers with affinity toward organic dye pollutants could both increase the efficiency and reduce the energy requirements for water treatment via the photocatalytic application.

Investigation of Antibacterial Properties of Ag Doped TiO2 Nanofibers Prepared by Electrospinning Process

In this study, undoped and 1, 2,3, 4, and 5 wt % Ag-doped TiO2 nanofibers have been fabricated by the electrospinning method applying 20 kV voltages at 8 cm height with a flow rate 0.1 mL/h. The antibacterial properties of undoped and doped Ag/TiO2 nanofibers were tested on Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The antibacterial effect of these fabricated nanofibers has been determined by disc diffusion and Baird parker methods. The results have shown that Ag/TiO2 nanofibers have an excellent antibacterial effect on this bacterium compared to pure TiO2 nanofibers. As a result, developed nanofibers can easily be applied in various fields such as biomedical sector and tissue engineering. In addition, the chemical components, morphology, and crystal structure of the nanofibers have been performed by scanning electron microscopy energy dispersive analysis (SEM-EDX), differential thermal analysis/thermal gravimetric analysis (DTA/TG), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods.
