Spatial distribution and bioaccumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in snails (Bellamya aeruginosa) and sediments from Taihu Lake area, China

Levels, Distribution and Ecological Risk Assessment of PBDEs in Soils and Plants Around the Engineering Plastics Factory

This study systematically investigated the pollution levels and migration trends of PBDEs in soils and plants around engineering plastics factory, and identified the ecological risks of PBDEs in the environment around typical pollution sources.The results showed that 13 kinds of PBDEs were widely detected in the surrounding areas, and the concentration level was higher than the general environmental pollution level. The total PBDE concentrations (∑13PBDEs) in soils ranged from 14.6 to 278.4 ng/g dry weight (dw), and in plants ranged from 11.5 to 176 ng/g dw. Both soil and plant samples showed that BDE-209 was the most important congener, the pollution level in soil and plant was similar, and the composition of PBDEs congener was similar. In the soil column (50 cm), the radial migration of PBDEs was mainly concentrated in the 0-30 cm section. Except for BDE-66, which was mainly located in the 20-30 cm soil layer, the concentration of PBDEs was the highest in the 0-10 cm region. Furthermore, the environmental risks of PBDEs in soil and plants were evaluated by hazard quotient method, and the HQ values were all < 1, which did not exhibit any ecological risk. The evaluation results also showed that the ecological risk of PBDEs in soil was higher than that of plants, especially penta-BDE, which should be paid more attention.

Biomonitoring of PAHs and PCBs in industrial, suburban, and rural areas using snails as sentinel organisms

There is a worldwide concern about the presence of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the environment because of their toxicity, bioaccumulation, and resistance to degradation. Various conventional monitoring techniques have been used to assess their presence in diverse environmental compartments. Most currently available methods, however, have limitations with regards to long-term monitoring. In the present work, juvenile Cornu aspersum (O. F. Müller, 1774) snails were tested in field microcosms as biomonitors for two major classes of organic pollutants, namely, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The study assessed their deployment in one suburban, one rural, and two industrial sites over an 18-week period and monitored for temporal variations of 16 PAHs and 22 PCBs. Sampling was conducted once every 3 weeks. Targeted pollutants were extracted from the caged snails using the QuEChERS extraction procedure and subsequently analyzed using gas chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). The results showed that the bioaccumulation of specific pollutants was site dependent; significantly higher levels of PCBs were observed at the industrial sites as compared to the suburban and rural ones. PAHs were bioaccumulated by the snails via ingestion of air and soil whereas PCBs were mainly bioaccumulated via soil contact and ingestion. The findings of this study indicate that C. aspersum is a reliable model organism for the biomonitoring of organic pollutants in air and soil compartments and can be used as part of an integrated environmental assessment.

Short-chain fatty acids facilitated long-term dechlorination of PCBs in Taihu Lake sediment microcosms: Evidence from PCB congener and microbial community analyses

Microbial reductive dechlorination hosts great promise as an in situ bioremediation strategy for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) contamination. However, the slow dechlorination in sediments limits natural attenuation. Short-chain fatty acids, as preferred carbon sources and electron donors for dechlorinating microorganisms, might stimulate PCB dechlorination. Herein, two sets of short-chain fatty acids, sole acetate and a fatty acid mixture (acetate, propionate, and butyrate), were amended periodically into Taihu Lake (China) sediment microcosms containing nine PCB congeners (PCB5, 12, 64, 71, 105, 114, 149, 153, and 170) after 24 weeks of incubation. Short-chain fatty acids facilitated the long-term PCB dechlorination and the promoting effect of the fatty acid mixture compared favorably with that of sole acetate. By the end of 108 weeks, the total PCB mass concentrations in acetate amended and fatty acid mixture amended microcosms significantly declined by 7.6% and 10.3% compared with non-amended microcosms (P < 0.05), respectively. Short-chain fatty acids selectively favored the removal of flanked meta and single-flanked para chlorines. Notably, a rare ortho dechlorination pathway, PCB25 (24-3-CB) to PCB13 (3-4-CB), was enhanced. Supplementary fatty acids significantly increased reductive dehalogenases (RDase) gene pcbA5 instead of improving the growth of Dehalococcoides. These findings highlight the merits of low cost short-chain fatty acids on in situ biostimulation in treating PCBs contamination.

The redox activity of polychlorinated biphenyl quinone metabolite orchestrates its pro-atherosclerosis effect via CAV1 phosphorylation

Further investigations are required to prove that polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) exposure is a cardiovascular disease risk factor. Unlike previous studies that attributed the atherogenic effect of PCBs to aryl hydrocarbon receptor activation, we illustrated a new mechanism involved in the redox reactivity of PCBs. We discover the redox reactivity of quinone moiety is the primary factor for PCB29-pQ-induced proinflammatory response, which highly depends on the status of caveolin 1 (CAV1) phosphorylation. PCB29-pQ-mediated CAV1 phosphorylation disrupts endothelial nitric oxide synthase, toll-like receptor 4, and reduces interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase 1 binding with CAV1. Phosphorylated proteomics analysis indicated that PCB29-pQ treatment significantly enriched phosphorylated peptides in protein binding functions, inflammation, and apoptosis signaling. Meanwhile, apolipoprotein E knockout (ApoE^-/-) mice exposed to PCB29-pQ had increased atherosclerotic plaques compared to the vehicle group, while this effect was significantly reduced in ApoE^-/-/CAV1^-/- double knockout mice. Thus, we hypothesis CAV1 is a platform for proinflammatory cascades induced by PCB29-pQ on atherosclerotic processes. Together, these findings confirm that the redox activity of PCB metabolite plays a role in the etiology of atherosclerosis.

Diversity and interaction of bacterial and microeukaryotic communities in sediments planted with different submerged macrophytes: Responses to decabromodiphenyl ether

Although various persistent organic pollutants (POPs) can affect microbial communities and functions in aquatic ecosystems, little is known about how bacteria and microeukaryotes respond to the POPs in sediments planted with different submerged macrophytes. Here, a 60-day microcosm experiment was carried out to investigate the changes in the diversity and interaction of bacterial and microeukaryotic communities in sediments collected from Taihu lake, either with decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) own or combined with two common submerged macrophyte species (Vallisneria natans and Hydrilla verticillate). The results showed that BDE-209 significantly decreased the bacterial α-diversity but increased the microeukaryotic one. In sediments planted with submerged macrophytes, the negative effect of BDE-209 on bacterial diversity was weakened, and its positive effect on microeukaryotic one was strengthened. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that the negative relationship was dominant in bacterial and microeukaryotic communities, while the cooperative relationship between microbial species was increased in planted sediments. Among nine keystone species, one belonging to bacterial family Thermoanaerobaculaceae was enriched by BDE-209, and others were inhibited. Notably, such inhibition was weakened, and the stimulation was enhanced in planted sediments. Together, these observations indicate that the responses of bacteria and microeukaryotes to BDE-209 are different, and their communities under BDE-209 contamination are more stable in sediments planted with submerged macrophytes. Moreover, the effects of plant species on the microbial responses to BDE-209 need to be explored by more specific field studies in the future.

Enhancement effects of decabromodiphenyl ether on microbial sulfate reduction in eutrophic lake sediments: A study on sulfate-reducing bacteria using dsrA and dsrB amplicon sequencing

Although sulfate (SO₄^2-) reduction by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) is an important sulfur cycling processes, little is known about how the persistent organic pollutants affect the SO₄^2- reduction process in the eutrophic lake sediments. Here, we carried out a 120-day microcosm experiment to explore the effects of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) on SO₄^2- reduction mediated by SRB in sediment collected from Taihu Lake, a typical eutrophic lake in China. The results showed that BDE-209 contamination significantly enhanced the activity of dissimilatory sulfite reductase (DSR) (r = 0.83), which led to an increased concentration of sulfide produced by SO₄^2- reduction. This stimulatory effect of BDE-209 on DSR activity was closely related to variations in the dsrA- and dsrB-type SRB communities. The abundances and diversities of the dsrA- and dsrB-containing SRB increased and their community composition varied in response to BDE-209 contamination. The gene copies (r = 0.72), Chao 1 (r = 0.50), Shannon (r = 0.55), and Simpson (r = 0.70) indices of dsrB-containing SRB was positively correlated with BDE-209 contamination. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that network complexity, connectivity, and the interspecific cooperative relationship in SRB were strengthened by BDE-209 contamination. The keystone species identified in the SRB community mainly belonged to the genera Candidatus Sulfopaludibacter for the dsrA-containing SRB and Desulfatiglans for the dsrB-containing SRB, and their relative abundances were positively correlated with DSR activity in the sediment. The relative abundance of the keystone species and SRB diversity were important microbial factors directly contributing to the variations in DSR activity based on structural equation modeling analysis. Notably, the results of abundance, community structure, and interspecific relationships showed that the dsrB-containing SRB may be more sensitive to the BDE-209 contamination than the dsrA-containing SRB. These results will help us understand the effects of BDE-209 on microbial sulfate reduction in eutrophic lakes.

Characterization and Interpolation of Sediment Polychlorinated Biphenyls and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers in Resident Killer Whale Habitat along the Coast of British Columbia, Canada

The northeastern Pacific northern and southern resident killer whale (Orcinus orca) populations are listed as threatened and endangered in Canada, respectively, with persistent, bioaccumulative contaminants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), posing threats to their recovery. Concentrations of PCBs and PBDEs in subtidal surface sediments collected from 97 sites along the British Columbia (BC) coast were used to identify their distribution and profiles, and to assess killer whale habitat quality. Victoria Harbour (VH3_{(site ID: 1)} ) sediments exhibited the highest PCB and PBDE concentrations. For PCBs, PCB-138 was found at the highest concentration, followed by PCB-153, PCB-110, PCB-149, PCB-101, and PCB-118. For PBDEs, individual congeners were ranked as follows: BDE-209 > BDE-207 > BDE-206 > BDE-208 > BDE-47 > BDE-99. Principal component analyses (PCA) illustrated the variations in contaminant profiles, with PC1 for PCBs and PBDEs correlated with the octanol-water partition coefficient (log K_OW , p < 0.003). Based on the PCA, sediment particle size, total organic carbon (TOC), and water depth at collection were other factors associated with the distribution of PBDEs, while PCB profiles were associated with TOC. Total PCB and PBDE concentrations at 100% and 34% of the sites, respectively, exceeded the recently adopted British Columbia's Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy Working Sediment Quality Guidelines (PCBs 3.7 pg/g dry wt and PBDEs 1000 pg/g dry wt), considered protective of killer whales. Our findings suggest that the legacy of banned PCBs and PBDEs has the potential to constrain the recovery of killer whales as a result of their mobilization from sediments and consequent uptake by marine food webs. In-situ biological effects, bioaccumulation, and multi-media distribution of organic contaminants in a shallow lake

Anthropogenic activity-impacted aquatic environment contains a complex mixture of contaminants, and ecological risk assessment solely based on chemical analysis is insufficient and biological assessment is required. However, traditional assessment heavily relies on laboratory bioassays, which may cause uncertainty due to inevitable laboratory-related artifact. A self-designed in-situ bioassay system was successfully applied to simultaneously evaluate water and sediment toxicity by co-exposure of two native species, Chinese rare minnows (Gobiocypris rarus) and Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) in Tai Lake Basin, China. In-situ exposure caused pronouncedly lethal and sublethal effects (i.e., metabolic and oxidative stress, neurotoxicity, reproductive toxicity) on both fish and clams. Meanwhile, multi-media distribution of organic contaminants in water-sediment-biota system was analyzed. Besides hydrophobicity, metabolism was recognized as an influential factor on phase distribution of contaminants in water-fish and sediment-clam systems. Traditional hazard quotient (HQ) method based on environmental concentrations of 98 contaminants showed bias in risk assessment. Instead, a weight of evidence method by integrating three lines of evidence, including in-situ survival, enhanced integrated biomarker response values and environmental concentrations, successfully differentiate high- and moderate-risk sites in the shallow lakes. The present study incorporated in-situ bioassays into risk assessment using a weight of evidence approach, which reduced uncertainty in decision-making.

Environmental contamination and human exposure of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in China: A review

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), together with 11 other organic compounds, were initially listed as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) by the Stockholm Convention because of their potential threat to ecosystems and humans. In China, many monitoring studies have been undertaken to reveal the level of PCBs in environment since 2005 due to the introduced stricter environmental regulations. However, there are still significant gaps in understanding the overall spatial and temporal distributions of PCBs in China. This review systematically discusses the occurrence and distribution of PCBs in environmental matrices, organisms, and humans in China. Results showed that PCB contamination in northern and southern China was not significantly different, but the PCB levels in East China were commonly higher than those in West China, which might have been due to the widespread consumption of PCBs and intensive human activities in East China. Serious PCB contamination was found in e-waste disassembling areas (e.g., Taizhou of Zhejiang Province and Qingyuan and Guiyu of Guangdong Province). Higher PCB concentrations were also chronicled in megalopolises and industrial clusters. The unintentionally produced PCBs (UP-PCBs) formed during industrial thermal processes may play an increasingly significant role in PCB pollution in China. Low PCB levels were recorded in rural and underdeveloped districts, particularly in remote and high-altitude localities such as the Tibetan Plateau and the South China Sea. However, these data are limited. Human exposure to PCBs is closely related to the characteristics of environmental pollution. This review also discusses existing issues and future research prospects on PCBs in China. For instance, the accumulation characteristics and migration regularities of PCBs in food webs should be further studied. More investigations should be undertaken to assess the quantitative relationship between external and internal exposure to PCBs. For example, bioaccessibility and bioavailability studies should be supplemented to evaluate human health risks more accurately.

Long-term effects of decabromodiphenyl ether on denitrification in eutrophic lake sediments: Different sensitivity of six-type denitrifying bacteria

The widespread use of polybrominated diphenyl ethers inevitably results in their increased release into natural waters and subsequent deposition in sediments. However, their long-term effects on the bacteria participating in each step of denitrification in eutrophic lake sediments are still unknown. Here, we conducted a one-year microcosm experiment to determine the long-term effects of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209), at low (2 mg kg^-1 dry weight) and high (20 mg kg^-1 dry weight) contamination levels, on six-type denitrifying bacteria and their activities in sediments collected from Taihu Lake, a typical eutrophic lake in China. At the end of the experiment, sediment denitrifying reductase activities were inhibited by BDE-209 at both levels, with the greatest inhibition seen for nitric oxide reductase activity. The higher nitrate concentration in the contaminated sediments was attributed to the inhibition of nitrate reductase activities. The abundances of six-type denitrifying genes (narG, napA, nirK, nirS, norB, and nosZ) significantly decreased under high BDE-209 treatment, and narG and napA genes were more sensitive to the toxicity of BDE-209. The results from pyrosequencing showed that BDE-209, at either treatment concentration, decreased the six-type denitrifying bacterial diversities and altered their community composition. This shift of six-type denitrifying bacterial communities might also be driven by the debrominated products concentrations of BDE-209 and variations in sediment inorganic nitrogen concentrations. In particular, some genera from phylum Proteobacteria such as Pseudomonas, Cupriavidus, and Azoarcus were decreased significantly because of BDE-209 and its debrominated products.

Occurrence of polychlorinated biphenyl congeners in marine sediment of Makran region, Chabahr bay, Iran

In this study, selected PCB congeners (IUPAC numbers 28, 52, 101, 138, 153, and 180) were quantified in 34 stations of Chabahr bay and around it in the Makran region of Iran. The sum of total PCB concentrations varied from below the detection limit to 485 ng kg^-1 dry weight of sediment. Based on the Canadian Sediment Quality Guidelines, the effect of detected PCBs was negligible for aquatic organisms. According to the dominance of PCB 28 and 52 with average range of 62 to 100% of total PCBs, maritime transportation and atmospheric deposition appear to be the important source of PCBs in this region. Further, the presence of components of commercial products such as ClophenA50 appears to be one of the probable sources.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the Danjiangkou Reservoir, China: identification of priority PBDE congeners

Although the production of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) has been phased out over the past decade worldwide, they are still potentially hazardous to the environment due to their persistence and toxicity. This study investigated the levels of 55 PBDEs in water and sediments from the Danjiangkou Reservoir, China. The levels of PBDEs were in the range of not detected (ND)-286.67 ng/L in water and ND-236.04 ng/g in sediments. BDE209 was the predominant PBDE congener and constituted 15-50% and 44-68% of the total PBDEs in water and sediments, respectively. Commercial pentaBDE products (70-5DE, DE-71) were the dominant source of tetraBDE, pentaBDE, and hexaBDE, while commercial octaBDE (79-8DE) and decaBDE (102E and 82-0DE) products were the main sources of nonaBDE and decaBDE in water. PBDEs in sediments mainly stemmed from commercial decaBDE products and combustion sources. BDE-209 posed high ecological risks to aquatic organisms and dominated the total ecological risks of PBDEs. No cancer risks and non-cancer risks were observed for PBDEs. A ranking method based on four criteria, i.e., detection frequency, concentration, ecological risk, and health risks, was proposed, and 17 PBDEs were identified as high priority PBDEs for future monitoring and management in the Danjiangkou Reservoir.

Sediment records of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in Yangtze River Delta of Yangtze River in China

The spatial and temporal distributions of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were investigated in five sediment cores from the Yangtze River Delta of Yangtze River in China. The surficial concentrations of nine tri- through hepta-BDE congeners (Σ₉BDEs) and BDE209 were highest at urban sites S3 and S2, followed by rural site S1 and estuary sites S5 and S4, respectively, based on dry sediment weight. Both BDE209 and ∑₉BDE concentrations exponentially increased between 1990 and 2008. Commercial deca-BDE, penta-BDE, and octa-BDE products were likely PBDE sources in the study area. The relative abundances of BDE209 were higher in sediment cores from estuary than those from urban and rural locations, ascribing to the atmospheric transport from the adjacent densely populated northern and eastern coastal regions. This conclusion was further confirmed by the higher ratios of BDE47/BDE99 and BDE100/BDE99 in cores from the estuary than those from other locations.

Atmospheric concentration, source identification, and health risk assessment of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in two countries: Peru and Turkey

It is known that some persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are used worldwide, and these pollutants are dangerous for human health. However, there are still countries where measurements of these pollutants have not been adequately measured. Although many studies have been published for determining the concentrations of POPs in Turkey, there are limited studies in Latin American countries like Peru. For this reason, it is essential both to conduct a study in Peru and to compare the study with another country. This study is aimed at determining the atmospheric POPs such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), organochlorine pesticide (OCP), and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations using passive air samplers in Yurimaguas (Peru) and Bursa (Turkey). Molecular diagnosis ratios and ring distribution methods were used to determine the sources of PAHs. According to these methods, coal and biomass combustions were among the primary sources of PAHs in Peru, while petrogenic and petroleum were the primary sources of PAHs in Turkey. Then, α-HCH/γ-HCH and β-/(α+γ)-HCH ratios were used to determine the sources of OCPs. According to the α-HCH/γ-HCH ratios, the primary sources of OCPs in both countries were lindane. Similarly, according to β-/(α+γ)-HCH ratios, the HCHs have been historically used in Peru while they were recently utilized in Turkey. Finally, homologous group distributions were used to determine the sources of PCBs. Similar distributions of homologous groups were observed in the sampling sites in both countries. Also, the homologous group distributions obtained have been determined that industrial activities could be effective in the sampling areas in both countries. When the cancer risks that could occur via inhalation were evaluated, no significant cancer risk has been determined in both countries.

Legacy and Emerging Brominated Flame Retardants in Bizerte Lagoon Murex (Hexaplex Trunculus): Levels and Human Health Risk Assessment

Occurrence of traditional (PBDEs) and novel (HBB, PBEB, DBDPE) brominated flame retardants, as well as the natural compounds of MeO-PBDEs, were studied in a shellfish species (Hexaplex trunculus) sampled from Bizerte Lagoon. PBDE and MeO-PBDE mean concentrations in murex soft tissues were 187 and 264 ng g^-1 lw respectively. The alternative flame retardants were not identified. The sum of PBDE and MeO-PBDE levels recorded in murex from the investigated aquatic ecosystem were comparable or a relatively lower than those reported for other organisms from other regions across the world. The amount of PBDE and MeO-PBDE concentrations from the Bizerte Lagoon recorded in murex were comparable or a relatively lower than those recorded from other areas across the world for other species. There is not a danger to the population health with regard to PBDE intakes associated with the consumption of murex in Bizerte city. We believe that this is the first study of the analysis of these pollutants in marine gastropod mollusks from Tunisian aquatic areas.

Accumulation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers and microbiome response in the great pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis with exposure to nylon (polyamide) microplastics

Microplastics attract widespread attention, including for their potential to transport toxic chemicals in the form of plasticisers and associated hydrophobic organic chemicals, such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The aims of this study were to investigate how nylon (polyamide) microplastics may affect PBDE accumulation in snails, and the acute effects of nylon particles and PBDEs on survival, weight change and inherent microbiome diversity and community composition of the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis. Snails were exposed for 96 h to BDEs-47, 99, 100 and 153 in the presence and absence of 1% w/w nylon microplastics in quartz sand sediment. No mortality was observed over the exposure period. Snails not exposed to microplastics lost significantly more weight compared to those exposed to microplastics. Increasing PBDE concentration in the sediment resulted in an increased PBDE body burden in the snails, however microplastics did not significantly influence total PBDE uptake. Based on individual congeners, uptake of BDE 47 by snails was significantly reduced in the presence of microplastics. The diversity and composition of the snail microbiome was not significantly altered by the presence of PBDEs nor by the microplastics, singly or combined. Significant effects on a few individual operational taxonomic units (OTUs) occurred when comparing the highest PBDE concentration with the control treatment, but in the absence of microplastics only. Overall within these acute experiments, only subtle effects on weight loss and slight microbiome alterations occurred. These results therefore highlight that L. stagnalis are resilient to acute exposures to microplastics and PBDEs, and that microplastics are unlikely to influence HOC accumulation or the microbiome of this species over short timescales.

Effects of decabromodiphenyl ether on activity, abundance, and community composition of phosphorus mineralizing bacteria in eutrophic lake sediments

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are typical persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the environment. However, little is known about their effects on phosphorus mineralizing bacteria (PMB) in eutrophic lake sediments, despite the critical role of PMB in phosphorus (P) biogeochemical cycling. In this study, we carried out a 60-day microcosm experiment to understand the effects of 2 and 20 mg kg^-1 dry weight decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) on the activity, abundance, diversity, and community composition of PMB in the sediment of Taihu Lake, a typical eutrophic lake in China. The results showed that BDE-209 contamination, regardless of the contamination levels, significantly increased the orthophosphate concentration in overlying water and available phosphorus concentration in sediments on day 60. Such increases may be explained by the stimulatory effects of BDE-209 on alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and PMB abundance. Moreover, based on Miseq sequencing of the phoD gene encoding ALP, Actinobacteria was the dominant PMB phylum in all treatments, and BDE-209 significantly increased the diversity of PMB and altered their community composition. In particular, the relative abundances of some PMB genera such as Bradyrhizobium were increased significantly after 60 days of the High treatment. A co-occurrence network analysis further revealed that the high level of BDE-209 contamination strengthened the connectivity and interspecific co-operative relationships in the PMB community. These results will help us to understand the effects of POPs on P biogeochemical cycling in eutrophic lakes and the associated microbial mechanisms.

Allelopathy appraisal of worm metabolites in the synergistic effect between Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri and Potamogeton malaianus on algal suppression

In Chinese Lake Taihu, the algal quantity was significantly larger in summer than late spring (p < 0.01). In summer, compared with the dredged area including neither zoobenthos nor submerged macrophytes, the algal biomass and density were significantly lower in the area filled with the submerged macrophytes. Interestingly, the minimum algal bloom was observed in the combined area containing submerged macrophytes and zoobenthos, which was due to the synergistic interaction between the zoobenthos and the macrophytes. The metabolite extracts from the numerically dominant zoobenthos Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri had significant algal inhibitory effects of Microcystis aeruginosa, and displayed stimulatory effects on seed germination, seedling growth, and peroxidase activity of the prevalent submerged macrophyte Potamogeton malaianus. 27 active compounds in the worm metabolites were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Among these compounds three chemicals arachidonic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, and linoleic acid with concentrations of 13.92 ± 1.11, 10.57 ± 2.52, 2.75 ± 0.73 mg/kg dry weight, respectively, were confirmed as the typical allelochemicals with algal inhibition potential. In short, the metabolites allelopathy of L. hoffmeisteri can form and assist the synergistic effect between L. hoffmeisteri and P. malaianus on algal suppression. Thus, it is feasible to simultaneously restore submerged macrophytes and zoobenthos community in the disturbed eutrophic lakes for removing harmful algae.

Persistent organic pollutants in typical lake ecosystems

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are highly toxic organic chemicals. Lakes are one of the main sinks of POPs. POPs can be accumulated in multiple matrices in lake ecosystems and biomagnified through the food web, and thus pose a potential threat not only to lake ecosystems, but also to human health. Given their potential persistent risks, they have received much attention over the past decades. This review comprehensively summarizes the data on the levels and distributions of POPs in selected typical lake ecosystems in China and worldwide, involving water, sediments, organisms, and surrounding soils and atmosphere. It was found that current publications on POPs in Chinese lakes are mainly related to lakes in the developed eastern plain area, with only a few studies concerning the less-developed Qinghai-Tibet Plateau area. Similarly, around the world, there are more research on POPs in developed countries and less in relatively less-developed areas. Moreover, there are significant differences in the levels of POPs in different matrices in different lake ecosystems. Legacy POPs, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), were commonly detected and reported in different lakes, while emerging POPs like perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), and hexabromocyclododecane (HCBD) were relatively less detected or reported. A comprehensive summarization on the levels and distributions of traditional and emerging POPs in lake ecosystems could be significant for further understanding the behaviors and risks of POPs in lake ecosystems.

The occurrence of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) contamination in soil, water/sediment, and air

As a kind of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are extensively used in different types of electronic equipment, furniture, plastics, and textiles. PBDEs are ubiquitous environmental contaminants that may impact human health and ecosystems. Here we highlight recent findings on the occurrence, contamination status, and transport of PBDEs in soil, water/sediment, and air. Four aspects are discussed in detail: (1) sources of PBDEs to the environment; (2) occurrence and transport of PBDEs in soil; (3) PBDEs in aquatic ecosystems (water/sediment) and their water-sediment partitioning; and (4) the occurrence of PBDEs in the atmosphere and their gas-particle partitioning. Future prospects for the investigation on PBDEs occurrence are also discussed based on current scientific and practical needs.

Occurrence of halogenated flame retardants in sediments and sea urchins (Paracentrotus lividus) from a North African Mediterranean coastal lagoon (Bizerte, Tunisia)

Classic (polybromodiphenyl ethers, PBDEs) and emerging halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) such as hexabromobenzenze (HBB), pentabromoetilbenzene (PBEB), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and halogenated norbornenes (HNs), as well as naturally produced methoxylated-PBDEs (MeO-PBDEs), were analyzed in 12 sediment and 30 urchin (Paracentrotus lividus) samples collected from Bizerte Lagoon in northern Tunisia. Levels of HFRs in the sediments ranged from nd to 51.8 ng/g dry weight (dw), while MeO-PBDEs were not detected. As regards levels in urchins, concentrations of PBDEs, HNs and MeO-PBDEs ranged from 3.67 to 56.9, 4.52 to 116 and nd to 364 ng/g lipid weight (lw), respectively. Thus, levels of naturally occurring compounds were higher than those of an anthropogenic origin. As regards HFRs, the highest contribution comes from HNs with levels ranging between 9.98 and 143 ng/g lw. HN and PBDE concentrations in sea urchin are similar or slightly lower than other reports for other species, while total MeO-PBDE concentrations are higher. The comsumption of sea urchins in Bizerte city is not a threat to public health concerning PBDE intakes.

Occurrence of PCDD/PCDFs, dioxin-like PCBs, and PBDEs in surface sediments from the Neva River and the Eastern Gulf of Finland (Russia)

A total of 26 samples of surface sediments collected in the Neva River (including the St. Petersburg city area) and in the Russian part of the Gulf of Finland were analyzed for 17 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), 12 dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs), and 10 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The concentrations of total PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs in sediments ranged from < 0.05 to 219 pg g^-1 d.w. and from 44 to 246,600 pg g^-1 d.w. respectively. The total World Health Organization toxic equivalent (WHO-TEQ_{PCDD/F + PCB}) values varied between 0.01 and 59.0 pg g^-1. In the majority of cases, the PCDD/F and dl-PCB concentrations do not exceed the threshold effect level (TEL) recommended by Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) as quantitative target for the sum of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs. The congener profile indicates that combustion is the primary source of PCDD/Fs in most of the studied samples. For the PCBs, the historical use of technical PCB products was identified as the major source. ΣPBDE₁₀ concentrations ranged from 0.004 to 1.8 ng g^-1 d.w. The congener profile results show that BDE-47 (tetra-BDE) is the dominant congener in sediment samples. According to the sediment and water quality guidelines established in the EU (PNEC) and in Canada (FEQG), all the samples studied can be classified as lowly contaminated by PBDEs. The sediment concentrations of PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs, and PBDEs measured in this study were comparable to or lower than those reported for other areas of the Baltic Sea.

Polychlorinated biphenyls in apple snails from an abandoned e-waste recycling site, 2010-2016: A temporal snapshot after the regulatory efforts and the bioaccumulation characteristics

The rudimentary recycling of electronic waste (e-waste) has been banned in China since the late 2000s, leaving many abandoned e-waste sites. However, knowledge is limited on the concentrations and fates of the e-waste derived contaminants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in these abandoned sites. In this work, we assessed the temporal trend of PCB concentrations in the year 2010, 2012, and 2016 at an abandoned e-waste site in South China, using apple snail as a bioindicator. The mean ∑PCBs concentrations in apple snails sampled in 2016 (53.2 ng/g dry weight) was approximately 11-fold higher than that (4.68 ng/g dry weight) in apple snails from a reference site. The result suggested that the abandoned e-waste recycling site was still heavily polluted by PCBs, despite of the fact that crude e-waste recycling processes have been prohibited for nearly 10 years. The concentrations of ∑PCBs were significantly decreased in 2016 compared to those in 2010 (mean: 115 ng/g dry weight) and 2012 (mean: 92.3 ng/g dry weight), but there were no significant differences in the concentrations between 2010 and 2012. Regarding the congener profiles, the contributions of lower chlorinated congeners (tri- and tetra-PCBs) in the snails tended to be higher over the years. The ∑PCBs in snails were significantly correlated with those in soils. Additionally, PCB profiles in snails resembled those in soils. These results suggested that apple snails can be used as an ideal bioindicator for PCBs in the paddy soils. Field determined biota-soil accumulation factors (BSAFs) for PCBs ranged from 0.31 to 1.9, with most of the values being 1-2; indicating that theoretical BSAFs can be used to predict the bioaccumulation of PCBs in the snails with a reasonable degree of certainty.

Tissue distribution of Ag and oxidative stress responses in the freshwater snail Bellamya aeruginosa exposed to sediment-associated Ag nanoparticles

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are among the most widely used engineered nanomaterials and may eventually accumulate in sediments. Limited information is currently available regarding the toxicity, bioaccumulation and distribution of sediment-associated AgNPs in aquatic organisms. In the present study, a freshwater snail Bellamya aeruginosa was exposed via sediment to commercial Ag particles of four nominal sizes: 20 nm (AgNPs-20), 40 nm (AgNPs-40), 80 nm (AgNPs-80), and < 10 μm (bulk Ag), and to silver nitrate at sub-lethal concentrations (1, 10 and 100 μg Ag/g sediment). Ag burden and biomarkers of oxidative stress were assessed in different tissues of B. aeruginosa: hepatopancreas, gonad, foot and digestive tracts. All five Ag types were available for uptake by B. aeruginosa when spiked into sediment, and Ag accumulation in different tissues presented the following pattern: hepatopancreas > gonad ≈ digestive tracts > foot. Snails accumulated higher levels of Ag from aqueous Ag than from particulate Ag. In contrast, AgNPs-40 and AgNPs-80 treatments occasionally induced higher oxidative stress than aqueous Ag, indicating the significant role of nanoparticle itself in exerting toxicity. Size-dependent toxicity of AgNPs in sediment was also found, with AgNPs-20 showing lower toxicity than other Ag particles. Overall, this study demonstrated that the toxicity of sediment-associated AgNPs to B. aeruginosa varies with size and differs from aqueous Ag.

How wastewater with different nutrient levels influences microbial degradation of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) in anaerobic sediments

While wastewater and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are commonly both discharged into aquatic ecosystems, little information is known about how wastewaters with different nutrient levels impact on microbial degradation of PBDEs. In this study, we used an anaerobic microcosm experiment to examine how the removal rates of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) from contaminated sediment varied when exposed to three wastewaters with different nutrient properties, namely livestock wastewater (LS), municipal sewage (MS), and shrimp pond wastewater (SP), and to determine the microbial controls on removal processes. We found that BDE-47 degraded relatively rapidly in MS, which had low carbon and nitrogen concentrations, but degraded much more slowly in LS and SP, which had relatively high nutrient concentrations. The variations in BDE-47 removal in different wastewater were related to iron reduction rates and the abundances of organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB). The community compositions of both total bacteria and OHRB from the family Dehalococcoidaceae differed significantly among the wastewater treatments. Compared with other treatments, some bacterial groups with PBDE degradation abilities were more abundant in MS where the PBDE-degradation efficiencies were higher. Our results should help support evaluations of the bioremediation potential of sites that are contaminated with both halogenated organic compounds and nutrient-rich wastewater.

Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) in a freshwater food web from Dianshan Lake: Occurrence level, congener pattern and trophic transfer

Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) are new group of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) listed in the Stockholm Convention. The Yangtze River Delta is among the industrially most developed areas in China, supporting a large production and consumption of chlorinated paraffins (CPs). Despite this, there is very limited data on the environmental exposure of SCCPs from the region. This study analyzed SCCPs in 14 wild aquatic organisms from Dianshan Lake, Shanghai, China. The concentrations of total SCCPs ranged from 10 to 1300μgg^-1 lipid weight, with significantly higher levels (p<0.05) in benthic (benthic fish and invertebrates) than in non-benthic species (pelagic and mesopelagic fish). The abundance of C₁₀ congeners was much higher in the benthic species compared to in the non-benthic species. The calculated trophic magnification factors (TMFs) of SCCP congeners varied from 1.19 (C₁₀H₁₂Cl₁₀) to 1.57 (C₁₃H₂₀Cl₈). The TMFs were significantly correlated (p<0.01) with carbon-chain length in a positive linear relationship and with Log K_ow in a parabolic curve relationship. Considering the high concentrations of SCCPs in wild aquatic organisms and the trophic magnification observed in the freshwater food web, further studies should be undertaken to assess the environmental fate of SCCPs and the public health risk in the Yangtze River Delta.

Spatial distribution and diversity of organohalide-respiring bacteria and their relationships with polybrominated diphenyl ether concentration in Taihu Lake sediments

It is acknowledged that organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB) can degrade polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs); however, very little is known about the distribution of OHRB or their response to PBDE contamination in natural sediments. We collected sediments from 28 sampling sites in Taihu Lake, China, and investigated the spatial distribution and diversity of OHRB, and the relationships between the PBDE contamination levels and the PBDE removal potential. The abundances of five typical OHRB genera, namely Dehalobacter, Dehalococcoides, Dehalogenimonas, Desulfitobacterium, and Geobacter, ranged from 0.34 × 10⁴ to 19.4 × 10⁷ gene copies g^-1 dry sediment, and varied significantly among different areas of Taihu Lake. OHRB were more abundant in sediments from Meiliang and Zhushan Bay, where the PBDE concentrations were higher, and the phylotype diversity of the OHRB belonging to the family Dehalococcoidaceae was lower, than reported for other areas. While the sulfate concentrations explained much of the spatial distribution of OHRB, PBDE concentrations were also a strong influence on the abundance and diversity of OHRB in the sediments. For Dehalococcoides, Dehalogenimonas and Geobacter, the abundance of each genus was positively related to its own potential to remove PBDEs. The dominant OHRB genus, Dehalogenimonas, may contribute most to in situ bioremediation of PBDEs in Taihu Lake.

Sampling designs for contaminant temporal trend analyses using sedentary species exemplified by the snails Bellamya aeruginosa and Viviparus viviparus

Environmental monitoring typically assumes samples and sampling activities to be representative of the population being studied. Given a limited budget, an appropriate sampling strategy is essential to support detecting temporal trends of contaminants. In the present study, based on real chemical analysis data on polybrominated diphenyl ethers in snails collected from five subsites in Tianmu Lake, computer simulation is performed to evaluate three sampling strategies by the estimation of required sample size, to reach a detection of an annual change of 5% with a statistical power of 80% and 90% with a significant level of 5%. The results showed that sampling from an arbitrarily selected sampling spot is the worst strategy, requiring much more individual analyses to achieve the above mentioned criteria compared with the other two approaches. A fixed sampling site requires the lowest sample size but may not be representative for the intended study object e.g. a lake and is also sensitive to changes of that particular sampling site. In contrast, sampling at multiple sites along the shore each year, and using pooled samples when the cost to collect and prepare individual specimens are much lower than the cost for chemical analysis, would be the most robust and cost efficient strategy in the long run. Using statistical power as criterion, the results demonstrated quantitatively the consequences of various sampling strategies, and could guide users with respect of required sample sizes depending on sampling design for long term monitoring programs.
