Synthesis of novel sepiolite-iron oxide-manganese dioxide nanocomposite and application for lead(II) removal from aqueous solutions

Biomimetic mineralization of hydrated magnesium carbonate for hydrogel reinforcement and heavy metal adsorption

With excessive Mn(Ⅱ) and Cu(Ⅱ) pollution in aquatic environments posing potential health risks to inhabitants, the emergence of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technology has promoted the improvement of heavy metal remediation technologies. Using hydrothermal sediment as a crystal seed, rhamnolipid was used to mediate biomimetic mineralization to prepare hydrated magnesium carbonate (HMC) composites to enhance the Mn(Ⅱ)/Cu(Ⅱ) adsorption performance of alginate hydrogels. Hydrothermal sediment is beneficial for accelerating biomimetic mineralization, while rhamnolipid can induce a crystalline phase transformation from dypingite to nesquehonite. The addition of sediment significantly enhanced the compressive mechanical properties and thermal stability of the hydrogels. The adsorption performances of the nesquehonite and dypingite hydrogels were better for Mn(II) and Cu(II), respectively. An increase in the amount of sediment improved the adsorption of Cu(II) by the hydrogels appropriately, resulting in stronger selectivity for Cu(II). The adsorption of Mn(II) and Cu(II) on the hydrogel beads was thermodynamically spontaneous. The inhibitory effects of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), fulvic acid (FA) and alginate on Cu(II) adsorption were more obvious than those of bovine serum albumin (BSA). Both the complexation of functional groups on alginate and mineralization by HMC participated in the adsorption of Mn(II) and Cu(II).

Manganese dioxide decorated kiwi peel powder for efficient removal of lead from aqueous solutions, blood and Traditional Chinese Medicine extracts

For human health and environment safety, it is of great significance to develop novel materials with high effectiveness for removal of lead from not only aqueous solutions but also human body and traditional Chinese medicines. Here, functional kiwi peel composite, manganese dioxide decorated kiwi peel powder (MKPP), is proposed for the removal of Pb2+ effectively. The adsorption of Pb2+ in aqueous solution is a highly selective and endothermic process and kinetically follows a pseudo-second-order model, which can reach equilibrium with the capacity of 192.7 mg/g within 10 min. Comprehensive factors of hydration energy, charge-to-radius ratio and softness of Pb2+ make a stronger affinity between MKPP and Pb2+. The possible adsorption mechanism involves covalent bond, electrostatic force and chelation, etc. MKPP can be efficiently regenerated and reused with high adsorption efficiency after five cycles. Besides, MKPP can remove over 97% of Pb2+ from real water samples. MKPP can also alleviate lead poisoning to a certain extent and make the Pb level of TCM extract meet the safety standard. This work highlights that MKPP is a promising adsorbent for the removal of Pb2+ and provides an efficient strategy for reusing kiwi peel as well as dealing with the problem of Pb pollution.

Always positive covalent organic nanosheet enabling pH-independent adsorption and removal of Cr(Ⅵ)

Rapid and highly effective removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(Ⅵ)) is extremely vital to water resources restoration and environmental protection. To overcome the pH limitation faced by most ionic absorbents, an always positive covalent organic nanosheet (CON) material was prepared and its Cr(VI) adsorption and removal capability was investigated in detail. As-prepared EB-TFB CON (TFB = 1,3,5-benzaldehyde, EB = ethidium bromide) shows strong electropositivity in the tested pH range of 1 ∼ 10, display a pH-independent Cr(VI) removal ability, and work well for Cr(VI) pollution treatment with good anti-interference capability and reusability in a wide pH range covering almost all Cr(VI)-contaminated real water samples, thus eliminating the requirement for pH adjustment. Moreover, the nanosheet structure, which is obtained by a facile ultrasonic-assisted self-exfoliation, endows EB-TFB CON with fully exposed active sites and shortened mass transfer channels, and the Cr(VI) adsorption equilibrium can be reached within 15 min with a high adsorption capacity of 280.57 mg·g-1. The proposed Cr(VI) removal mechanism, which is attributed to the synergetic contributions of electrostatic adsorption, ion exchange and chemical reduction, is demonstrated by experiments and theoretical calculations. This work not only provides a general Cr(VI) absorbent without pH limitation, but also presents a paradigm to prepare ionic CONs with relatively constant surface charges.

Novel biogenic preparation of gold nanoparticles decorated on sepiolite clay and evaluation of anti-cancer effect on gastric cancer cell and electrochemical sensing of nitrite

An environmentally friendly strategy was used in this study to synthesize gold nanoparticles decorated on sepiolite clay (GNPs-SC) using Heracleum persicum grass extract. The physicochemical characters of the prepared composite were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). A GNPs-SC modified carbon pate electrode (CPE) was used to study the electrochemical oxidation of nitrite. The proposed nitrite sensor exhibits excellent performance, including a broad linear range (1.0-150 μM), a low limit of detection (0.4 μM), and acceptable reproducibility (RSD = 2.6%). As well, the prepared GNPs-SC was tested for its effectiveness against human gastric adenocarcinoma (AGS) cell line. The MTT assay protocol revealed that the bio-synthesized product displayed significant cytotoxic activity against gastric cancer in human subjects. The findings of this study indicate that GNPs-SC, synthesized using environmentally friendly protocol, exhibit great potential for use in electrochemical sensing and treatment of human cancer.

Sequestration of Ni (II), Pb (II), and Zn (II) utilizing biogenic synthesized Fe3O4/CLPC NCs and modified Fe3O4/CLPC@CS NCs: Process optimization, simulation modeling, and feasibility study

The present study reports low-cost novel biogenic magnetite Citrus limetta peels carbon (Fe3O4/CLPC) nanocomposites and modified Fe3O4/CLPC@CS nanocomposites cross-linked with glutaraldehyde and subsequently employed in batch mode sequestration of heavy metals ions. Diverse techniques fully characterized them, and the influence of operating variables on adsorption reactions from aqueous solutions was investigated. The Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) surface areas of synthesized Fe3O4/CLPC and Fe3O4/CLPC@CS NCs were 53.91 and 32.16 m2/g, while the mesoporous diameters were 7.69 and 7.57 nm, respectively. The Langmuir isotherm and Pseudo second order kinetic were well-fitting and capable of explaining the adsorption reaction. The Langmuir-based monolayer adsorption (qmax) for Fe3O4/CLPC@CS NCs was 82.65, 95.24, and 64.10 mg/g, higher than Fe3O4/CLPC NCs, which were 70.92, 84.75, and 59.17 mg/g for Ni (II), Pb (II), and Zn (II), respectively. Each metal's pseudo second order correlation coefficient (R2 ≥ 0.99) reveals that nanocomposites surface binding functional groups controlled the adsorption rate via chemisorption. Further, thermodynamic results confirm that each studied metal ions' adsorption was spontaneous, endothermic, and characterized by an increase in randomness. In addition to magnetic separability, three ad-desorption cycles yielded exceptional adsorption efficacy and > 93% regenerability. The present study also reveals the effective utilization of Fe3O4/CLPC and Fe3O4/CLPC@CS NCs as cost-effective magnetic separable green adsorbents for heavy metals sequestration from electroplating wastewater.

Facile activation of natural calcium-rich sepiolite with oxalic acid for selective Pb(II) removal: Highly-efficient performance, mechanisms and site energy distribution

The design and development of adsorbents with high efficiency, selectivity, and economy for Pb(II) are essential to environmental governance and ecological safety. Herein, an oxalic acid (OA) activated natural sepiolite (nSEP) composite for highly efficient Pb(II) removal was prepared by a facile impregnation strategy. The OA activated nSEP nanocomposite (OA-nSEP) was characterized by various instrumental techniques and its adsorption performance towards Pb(II) was further evaluated through a series of static and dynamic experiments under various environmental conditions. Results revealed that OA reacted with the calcium impurities in nSEP to form calcium oxalate, causing mesoporous structure and larger specific surface area of OA-nSEP. The obtained OA-nSEP possessed super high Pb(II) adsorption capacities (858.4-1252 mg/g), which were much higher than that of most modified clays or conventional materials. The average adsorption site energy and the standard deviation of the site energy distribution were analyzed to investigate the strength of Pb(II) binding onto OA-nSEP and the adsorption site heterogeneity. Mechanism studies confirmed that oxalate groups exerted a primary role in the adsorption process. X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS) unveiled that the coordination of oxalate with Pb(II) and precipitation of lead oxalate was responsible for the high efficiency and selectivity. Distinguishing feature of high adsorption capacity, specific selective adsorption, abundant availability, and splendid reusability make the OA-nSEP a promising candidate for eliminating Pb(II) in practical scenarios.

Synthesis and Characterization of MC/TiO2 NPs Nanocomposite for Removal of Pb2+ and Reuse of Spent Adsorbent for Blood Fingerprint Detection

The removal of toxic heavy metals from wastewater through the use of novel adsorbents is expensive. The challenge arises after the heavy metal is removed by the adsorbent, and the fate of the adsorbent is not taken care of. This may create secondary pollution. The study aimed to prepare mesoporous carbon (MC) from macadamia nutshells coated with titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) using a hydrothermal method to remove Pb2+ and to test the effectiveness of reusing the lead-loaded spent adsorbent (Pb2+-MC/TiO2 NP nanocomposite) in blood fingerprint detection. The samples were characterized using SEM, which confirmed spherical and flower-like structures of the nanomaterials, whereas TEM confirmed a particle size of 5 nm. The presence of functional groups such as C and Ti and a crystalline size of 4 nm were confirmed by FTIR and XRD, respectively. The surface area of 1283.822 m2/g for the MC/TiO2 NP nanocomposite was examined by BET. The removal of Pb2+ at pH 4 and the dosage of 1.6 g/L with the highest percentage removal of 98% were analyzed by ICP-OES. The Langmuir isotherm model best fit the experimental data, and the maximum adsorption capacity of the MC/TiO2 NP nanocomposite was 168.919 mg/g. The adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The ΔH° (-54.783) represented the exothermic nature, and ΔG° (-0.133 to -4.743) indicated that the adsorption process is spontaneous. In the blood fingerprint detection, the fingerprint details were more visible after applying the Pb2+-MC/TiO2 NP nanocomposite than before the application. The reuse application experiments showed that the Pb2+-MC/TiO2 NP nanocomposite might be a useful alternative material for blood fingerprint enhancement when applied on nonporous surfaces, eliminating secondary pollution.

Effect of MnxOy Nanoparticles Stabilized with Methionine on Germination of Barley Seeds (Hordeum vulgare L.)

The aim of this research was to study the effect of Mn_xO_y nanoparticles stabilized with L-methionine on the morphofunctional characteristics of the barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) crop. Mn_xO_y nanoparticles stabilized with L-methionine were synthesized using potassium permanganate and L-methionine. We established that Mn_xO_y nanoparticles have a diameter of 15 to 30 nm. According to quantum chemical modeling and IR spectroscopy, it is shown that the interaction of Mn_xO_y nanoparticles with L-methionine occurs through the amino group. It is found that Mn_xO_y nanoparticles stabilized with L-methionine have positive effects on the roots and seedling length, as well as the seed germination energy. The effect of Mn_xO_y nanoparticles on Hordeum vulgare L. seeds is nonlinear. At a concentration of 0.05 mg/mL, there was a statistically significant increase in the length of seedlings by 68% compared to the control group. We found that the root lengths of samples treated with Mn_xO_y nanoparticle sols with a concentration of 0.05 mg/mL were 62.8%, 32.7%, and 158.9% higher compared to samples treated with L-methionine, KMnO₄, and the control sample, respectively. We have shown that at a concentration of 0.05 mg/mL, the germination energy of seeds increases by 50.0% compared to the control sample, by 10.0% compared to the samples treated with L-methionine, and by 13.8% compared to the samples treated with KMnO₄.

Synthesis of easily renewable and recoverable magnetic PEI-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles and its application for adsorption and enrichment of tungsten from aqueous solutions

Tungsten is a hazardous metal to human health and the environment, but it is also valuable. Previous studies have been limited to the adsorption and removal of tungsten, without considering its recovery and utilization. In this article, a renewable magnetic material, Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles coated by polyethyleneimine (Fe₃O₄@PEI NPs), is synthesized and used for the adsorption of tungsten in water. Tungsten adsorption experiments were conducted under different initial tungsten concentrations, contact times, solution pH values, and co-existing anions. The results show that Fe₃O₄@PEI NPs efficiently and rapidly adsorb tungsten from water, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 43.24 mg/g. Under acidic conditions (pH ∼2), the adsorption performance of the NPs maximized. This is because tungstate ions polymerize under such conditions to form polytungstic anions. These are attracted to the positively charged surface of Fe₃O₄@PEI NPs by electrostatic attraction, followed by complexation reactions with the surface hydroxyl and amino groups of NPs, as evidenced by multiple spectroscopic methods. The NPs can be recovered and renewed and provide a potential application for the enrichment and recycling of high-value tungsten (W(VI)).

Polyoxometalate supported on a magnetic Fe3O4/MIL-88A rod-like nanocomposite as an adsorbent for the removal of ciprofloxacin, tetracycline and cationic organic dyes from aqueous solutions

In this work, a magnetic H3PW12O40/Fe3O4/MIL-88A (Fe) rod-like nanocomposite as a stable and effective ternary adsorbent was fabricated by the hydrothermal method and utilized for the removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP), tetracycline (TC) and organic dyes from aqueous solution. Characterization of the magnetic nanocomposite was accomplished by FT-IR, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, EDX, TEM, VSM, BET specific surface area and zeta potential analyses. The influencing factors on the adsorption potency of the H3PW12O40/Fe3O4/MIL-88A (Fe) rod-like nanocomposite including initial dye concentration, temperature and adsorbent dose were studied. The maximum adsorption capacities of H3PW12O40/Fe3O4/MIL-88A (Fe) for TC and CIP were 370.37 mg g-1 and 333.33 mg g-1 at 25 °C, respectively. In addition, the H3PW12O40/Fe3O4/MIL-88A (Fe) adsorbent had high regeneration and reusability capacity after four cycles. In addition, the adsorbent was recovered through magnetic decantation and reused for three consecutive cycles without a considerable reduction in its performance. The adsorption mechanism was mainly ascribed to electrostatic and π-π interactions. According to these results, H3PW12O40/Fe3O4/MIL-88A (Fe) can act as a reusable effective adsorbent for the fast elimination of tetracycline (TC), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and cationic dyes from aqueous solutions.

Adsorption kinetics of 20 glucocorticoids at environmentally relevant concentrations in wastewater by powdered activated carbons and development of surrogate models

Glucocorticoids (GCs) are widely used in the treatment of the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19), and the toxicity of GCs to aquatic organisms has aroused widespread concern. Powdered activated carbon (PAC) has proven effective in removing various trace organic pollutants. In this study, the adsorption behaviors of 20 typical GCs onto PACs were investigated at environmentally relevant concentrations (ng/L) in real wastewater, using four commercially available PACs (HDB, WPH, 20BF, PWA). The results showed that PAC adsorption was feasible for GC removal at ng/L concentrations. After adsorption for 60 min, the GC removal efficiencies obtained by HDB, WPH, 20BF, and PWA were 90-98 %, 89-97 %, 84-96 %, and 71-90 %, respectively. The adsorption processes of 20 GCs on PACs were well fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetics model (with R ² >0.98). Among the four PACs, HDB achieved the highest rates because of the electrostatic attraction between HDB (positively charged) and the complex of GCs and natural organic matter (GC-NOM, negatively charged). Among the 20 GCs, compounds with substitutions of halogen atoms or five-membered rings at C-17 achieved higher adsorption rates because of the enhanced formation of hydrogen bonds and a resulting increase in electron density. In addition, surrogate models with total fluorescence (TF) and ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm (UV₂₅₄) were developed to monitor the attenuation trend of GCs during adsorption processes. Compared with the UV₂₅₄ model, the TF model showed better sensitivity to GC monitoring, which could greatly simplify the water quality monitoring process and facilitate online monitoring of GCs in water.

Highly efficient surface sequestration of Pb2+ and Cr3+ from water using a Mn3O4 anchored reduced graphene oxide: Selective removal of Pb2+ from real water

Owing to the ubiquitous existence of detrimental heavy metals in the environment, simple adsorption-oriented approaches are becoming increasingly appealing for the effective removal of Pb²⁺ and Cr³⁺ from water bodies. These techniques use nanocomposites (NC) of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and Mn₃O₄ (rGO-Mn₃O₄), they employ a hydrothermal technique featuring NaBH₄ and NaOH solutions. Here, spectroscopic and microscopic instrumental techniques were used to evaluate the morphological and physicochemical characteristics of prepared reduced graphene oxide manganese oxide (rGO-Mn₃O₄), revealing that it possessed a well-defined porous structure with a specific surface area of 126 m² g^-1. The prepared rGO-Mn₃O₄ had significant adsorption efficiencies for Pb²⁺ and Cr³⁺, achieving maximum sequestration capacities of 130.28 and 138.51 mg g^-1 for Pb²⁺ and Cr³⁺, respectively, according to the Langmuir model. These adsorption capacities are comparable to or greater than those of previously reported graphene-based materials. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order models adequately represented the experimental results. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that adsorption occurred through spontaneous endothermic reactions. Recycling studies showed that the developed r-GO-Mn₃O₄ had excellent recyclability, with <70% removal at the 5th cycle; its feasibility was evaluated using industrial wastewater, suggesting that Pb²⁺ was selectively removed from Pb²⁺ and Cr³⁺ contaminated water. The instrumental analysis and surface phenomena studies presented here revealed that the adsorptive removal processes of both heavy metals involved π electron donor-acceptor interactions, ion exchange, and electrostatic interactions, along with surface complexation. Overall, the developed rGO-Mn₃O₄ has the potential to be a high-value adsorbent for removing heavy metals.

Cadmium adsorption performance and mechanism from aqueous solution using red mud modified with amorphous MnO2

In this study, red mud modified by manganese dioxide(MRM) was utilized as an adsorbent to effectively remove Cd²⁺ from aqueous solution. The characteristics were analysed by SEM-EDS, XRD, BET, FTIR and XPS. Different factors that affected the Cd²⁺ removal on MRM, such as dosage, initial pH, initial Cd²⁺ concentration, were investigated using batch adsorption experiments. Simultaneously, the adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms and adsorption thermodynamics of Cd²⁺ were also investigated using adsorption experiments data. The characterization results showed that MRM had a rougher, larger specific surface area and pore volume (38.91 m² g^-1, 0.02 cm³ g^-1) than RM (10.22 m² g^-1, 0.73 cm³ g^-1). The adsorption experiments found that the equilibrium adsorption capacity of MRM for Cd²⁺ was significantly increased to 46.36 mg g^-1, which was almost three times that of RM. According to the fitting results, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model described the adsorption process better than the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The Langmuir model fitted the adsorption isotherms well, indicating that the adsorption process was unimolecular layer adsorption and the maximum capacity was 103.59 mg g^-1. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption process was heat-trapping and spontaneous. Finally, combined XPS and FTIR studies, it was speculated that the adsorption mechanisms should be electrostatic attachment, specific adsorption (i.e., Cd-O or hydroxyl binding) and ion exchange. Therefore, manganese dioxide modified red mud can be an effective and economical alternative to the removal of Cd²⁺ in the wastewater treatment process.

Alkynyl functionalized MoS2 mesoporous materials with superb adsorptivity for heavy metal ions

Effective elimination of heavy metal ions from water is an arduous task for their toxic effects to aquatic ecosystem and human health. Herein, a novel alkynyl functionalized molybdenum disulfide (C-MoS₂) is fabricated via mechanochemical method with well interlayered spacing, meso porosity, and high surface area (~211 m²g^-1). Mineral MoS₂ was first peeled mechanically and oxidized in situ to MoS_2-xO_x, and then reduced by ball milling with CaC₂ to form the C-MoS₂ composite. The as-obtained C-MoS₂ shows extraordinary adsorptivity for heavy metal ions, viz. 1194 mg-Hg g^-1 (Hg(NO₃)₂ solution, pH= 5, 303.15 K, equilibrium Hg(II) concentration Ce= 36.9 μg·g^-1, ionic strength I= 17.2 mmolL^-1), and 442.3 mg-Pbg^-1 (Pb(NO₃)₂ solution, pH= 5, 303.15 K, equilibrium Pb(II) concentration Ce= 46.9μgg^-1, I= 5.8 mmolL^-1), respectively, along with excellent recyclability, representing one of the best sorbents till now. The adsorption isotherms of Hg(II) followed the Langmuir model and the adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption is an endothermic and entropy driven spontaneous process. The excellent adsorption performance of C-MoS₂ is attributed to its very high S-content, availability, and soft acid-base interaction with mercury and lead anions. The C-MoS₂ is an advanced sorbent for Hg(II) and Pb(II) with excellent adsorption performance and recyclability.

Formation of Dense and High-Aspect-Ratio Iron Oxide Nanowires by Water Vapor-Assisted Thermal Oxidation and Their Cr(VI) Adsorption Properties

Coral-like and nanowire (NW) iron oxide nanostructures were produced at 700 and 800 °C, respectively, through thermal oxidation of iron foils in air- and water vapor-assisted conditions. Water vapor-assisted thermal oxidation at 800 °C for 2 h resulted in the formation of highly crystalline α-Fe₂O₃ NWs with good foil surface coverage, and we propose that their formation was due to a stress-driven surface diffusion mechanism. The Cr(VI) adsorption property of an aqueous solution on α-Fe₂O₃ NWs was also evaluated after a contact time of 90 min. The NWs had a removal efficiency of 97% in a 225 mg/L Cr(VI) solution (pH 2, 25 °C). The kinetic characteristic of the adsorption was fitted to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and isothermal studies indicated that the α-Fe₂O₃ NWs exhibited an adsorption capacity of 66.26 mg/g. We also investigated and postulated a mechanism of the Cr(VI) adsorption in an aqueous solution of α-Fe₂O₃ NWs.

Enhanced performance of adsorptive removal of dibenzothiophene from model fuel over copper(II)-alginate beads containing polyethyleneterephthalate derived activated carbon

In this research, copper(II)-alginate (Cu(II)-A) beads containing polyethyleneterephthalate derived activated carbon (PET-AC) with porous structure were prepared by a feasible cross-linking technology. The composition and structure of the beads were thoroughly analyzed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller adsorption, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray methods. The desulfurization activity of the adsorbent for dibenzothiophene (DBT) in the model oil was investigated. The influence of mass ratio of PET-AC on the features of the prepared Cu(II)-A beads was studied. According to experimental results, higher adsorption capacity was acquired from PET-AC/Cu(II)-A at 4:1 mass ratio due to its high porosity and available Cu(II) adsorption centers. The adsorption isotherms could be correlated by the Langmuir isotherm and the maximum adsorption capacity reached up to 62.9 mg g^-1. The adsorption data showed better fitting (R² greater than 0.99) to the pseudo-second-order rate equation. Lewis acid-base and π-π interactions might be the driving force of the DBT adsorption. The adsorbent could be also reused for 4 successive runs with negligible loss in desulfurization capability. All of these features make the PET-AC/Cu(II)-A as a potential adsorbent towards desulfurization from fuels.

Phenylthiosemicarbazide-functionalized UiO-66-NH2 as highly efficient adsorbent for the selective removal of lead from aqueous solutions

A novel metal-organic framework (UiO-66-PTC) for efficient removal of Pb²⁺ ions from wastewater has been prepared by using 4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazide as the modifier. Various characterizations showed that UiO-66-PTC was successfully synthesized. The absorption results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) is 200.17 mg/g at 303 K and optimal pH 5. The adsorption kinetic follows the pseudo-second-order model and the adsorption isotherms fit the Langmuir model. This shows that Pb(II) is a single-layer adsorption on the surface of the adsorbent and the rate-controlling step is chemical adsorption. The thermodynamic results show that the adsorption process can proceed spontaneously, belong to the exothermic reaction. The adsorbent can selectively uptake lead ions from wastewater containing multiple interfering ions. After four adsorption and desorption cycles, the adsorption efficiency is still high. The adsorption mechanism of Pb(II) on the adsorbent is mainly through the chelation of Pb(II) with N and S atoms. These results indicate that UiO-66-PTC is an effective material for efficiently and selectivity removal of Pb(II) from solution, which is of practical significance.

A Novel Calcium Oxalate/Sepiolite Composite for Highly Selective Adsorption of Pb(II) from Aqueous Solutions

Synthesizing functional nanomaterials from naturally abundant clay has always been of vital importance for resource utilization, however, the lack of new methods to effectively utilize low-grade clay presents a significant challenge. Herein, a calcium oxalate/sepiolite nanocomposite (SMN-x) was prepared by using the water bath heating method to convert the associated calcium carbonate in low-grade sepiolite into calcium oxalate. The developed composite was subsequently used to remove Pb(II) from the aqueous solutions. The SMN-3 adsorbent prepared by heating in a water bath at 90 °C for 3 h (with a high specific surface area of 234.14 m2·g−1) revealed the maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacity of 504.07 mg·g−1 at pH 5, which was about five times higher than that of sepiolite (105.57 mg·g−1). Further, the SMN-3 adsorbent possessed a much higher selectivity for Pb(II) as compared to the other metal ions. Moreover, the residue was noted to be stable and safe. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms conformed to the quasi-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models. During the adsorption process, ion exchange was noted to the main mechanism, however, it was also accompanied by electrostatic attraction. This study provides a novel strategy for the sustainable development of simple and efficient adsorbents by utilizing low-grade clay minerals.

Removal of mercury(II) from wastewater using a new and effective composite: sulfur-coated magnetic carbon nanotubes

A sulfur-coated magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotube (S-M-MWCNT) composite was synthesized via coating a thin S layer on M-MWCNTs via a facile heating process. The prepared superparamagnetic adsorbent was employed for the uptake of mercury(II) (Hg(II)) from aqueous solutions and then magnetically separated without filtration or centrifugation steps. The adsorption of Hg(II) increased with increasing pH and reached a plateau value in the pH range 4.5-8.0. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order (PSO) model and equilibrium was reached within 3 h. The isotherm data obeyed the Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum adsorption capacity of S-M-MWCNT adsorbent was acquired as 62.11 mg g^-1. The adsorption of Hg(II) by the prepared composite is possibly controlled by the interaction between Hg(II) as a soft acid and elemental coated sulfur as a soft base. In addition, the coexist metal ions including copper(II) (Cu(II)), cadmium(II) (Cd(II)), cobalt(II) (Co(II)), lead(II) (Pb(II)), manganese(II) (Mn(II)), zinc(II) (Zn(II)), and chromium(III) (Cr(III)) had no significant effects on Hg(II) removal performance. It was found that the S-M-MWCNT composite could be reused after successive Hg(II) removal without any loss of adsorption capacity. Furthermore, the magnetic adsorbent holds high potential in the treatment of Hg-contaminated wastewater samples.

Adsorption of Mixed Dye System with Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide Modified Sepiolite: Characterization, Performance, Kinetics and Thermodynamics

In this study, sepiolite was modified by calcination (200 °C) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB) treatment. Though the specific surface area sharply declined, the adsorption amount of Acid Orange II (AO), Reactive Blue (RB), Acid Fuchsin (AR) and their mixed solution were improved. The morphology of modified sepiolite showed a better dispersibility and looser structure. The adsorption performance was highly impacted by the pH condition and adsorbent dosage. The electrostatic attraction of positively charged adsorption sites on the adsorbent surface and the negatively charged anionic dye could enhance the adsorption amount especially under acid condition. The order of preferentially adsorbed dye was AO > RB > AR. The adsorption process was much correlated to the quasi-second-order reaction kinetics. The adsorption amount and equilibrium amount of single dye system, as well as in the mixed system were in accordance with the Langmuir model and extended Langmuir isotherm.
