Histopatology and HSP70 analysis of the midgut of Rhinocricus padbergi (Diplopoda) in the evaluation of the toxicity of two new metallic-insecticides

Millipedes and earthworms: a comparison of their efficiency and the quality of the resulting products

ABSTRACTMillicomposting (MIL, with millipedes), vermicomposting (VER, with earthworms) and composting without invertebrates (CNT, control) were compared for the first time in a replicated controlled experiment to evaluate their efficiency and the quality of their products. Vegetal waste was degraded in small closed digesters to emulate household-scale composting. Temperature profiles were similar in the three composting types. Ninety-two days were enough to complete composting and obtain well-stabilized products (humus with C/N< 20; pH from 7 to 7.8). The mean final volume loss was about 8% higher in VER than MIL and CNT (P < 0.01) and it stabilized between the 32nd and 67th days (51.4% in VER, 43% MIL and 44% in CNT). Both invertebrates promoted gains in humus Ca content (about 34.5% higher compared to CNT), whereas the highest K and Mg contents were observed in VER humus. pH, P2O5, and S contents were also higher in VER humus than in CNT (all P < 0.05). The leachate volumes, electrical conductivity and Na+ and PO43- contents were similar (P > 0.05), while pH and contents of K+ and NH4+ were higher and NO3- was lower in VER than in MIL (all P < 0.01). This resulted in higher maturity degrees in MIL than VER (NH4+/NO3- = 0.01 and 0.93, respectively). Although all three composting types were efficient in producing mature high-quality organic fertilizers, this study showed that the addition of invertebrates improved the composting efficiency and the quality of the final products.

Histologic lesions of giant African millipedes (Archispirostreptus gigas) from a zoological institution

Histopathologic data of millipedes are scarce. Little is known about health and disease of these invertebrates despite their exhibition at zoological institutions and use in ecotoxicological studies. In a retrospective study of 69 zoo-housed giant African millipedes (Archispirostreptus gigas) submitted between 2018 and 2021, most deaths occurred during midwinter and in 2021. The most common lesion was inflammation (n = 55; 80%). Necrosis was seen concurrently in 31 (45%) millipedes and of these, bacteria (20; 29%) and fungi (7; 10%) were detected in lesions. Inflammation was seen in the head/collum (20; 29%), hemocoel (16; 23%), and appendages (9; 13%), specifically in perivisceral fat body (42; 61%), gut (16; 23%), tracheae (26; 38%), skeletal muscle (24; 35%), and ventral nerve (17; 25%). Inflammatory cell types and patterns included agranular hemocytes (61; 88%), granular hemocytes (39; 57%), and nodulation/encapsulation (47; 68%) often accompanied by melanization. The oral cavity or gut (ingestion), spiracles (inhalation), or cuticular defects were considered plausible routes of bacterial entry. Metazoan parasites (adult nematodes: 2, 3%; trematode ova: 2, 3%; and arthropods: 1, 1%) were associated with gut necrosis and inflammation in 5 millipedes. In addition, adult nematodes were noted in the gut of 4 millipedes without lesions. Neoplasia was not detected in any millipedes. Speculatively, environmental factors may have predisposed to disease, as most deaths occurred during winter months. Disease surveillance of millipedes is critical to optimize husbandry practices in zoo populations and investigate potential impacts of environmental degradation and climate change on wild millipedes.

Toxicity and remediation of pharmaceuticals and pesticides using metal oxides and carbon nanomaterials

The worldwide development of agriculture and industry has resulted in contamination of water bodies by pharmaceuticals, pesticides and other xenobiotics. Even at trace levels of few micrograms per liter in waters, these contaminants induce public health and environmental issues, thus calling for efficient removal methods such as adsorption. Recent adsorption techniques for wastewater treatment involve metal oxide compounds, e.g. Fe2O3, ZnO, Al2O3 and ZnO-MgO, and carbon-based materials such as graphene oxide, activated carbon, carbon nanotubes, and carbon/graphene quantum dots. Here, the small size of metal oxides and the presence various functional groups has allowed higher adsorption efficiencies. Moreover, carbon-based adsorbents exhibit unique properties such as high surface area, high porosity, easy functionalization, low price, and high surface reactivity. Here we review the cytotoxic effects of pharmaceutical drugs and pesticides in terms of human risk and ecotoxicology. We also present remediation techniques involving adsorption on metal oxides and carbon-based materials.

Cytotoxic aquatic pollutants and their removal by nanocomposite-based sorbents

Water is an extremely essential compound for human life and, hence, accessing drinking water is very important all over the world. Nowadays, due to the urbanization and industrialization, several noxious pollutants are discharged into water. Water pollution by various cytotoxic contaminants, e.g. heavy metal ions, drugs, pesticides, dyes, residues a drastic public health issue for human beings; hence, this topic has been receiving much attention for the specific approaches and technologies to remove hazardous contaminants from water and wastewater. In the current review, the cytotoxicity of different sorts of aquatic pollutants for mammalian is presented. In addition, we will overview the recent advances in various nanocomposite-based adsorbents and different approaches of pollutants removal from water/wastewater with several examples to provide a backdrop for future research.
