Highly effective removal of Pb2+ in aqueous solution by Na-X zeolite derived from coal gangue

Synthesis of zeolites from volcanic ash (Tajogaite, Spain) for the remediation of waters contaminated by fluoride

In the eruptive event of Tajogaite (2021) in La Palma, Canary Islands, large quantities of volcanic ash were accumulated, affecting the local environment and urban areas. In this study, volcanic ash sampled from urban areas (catalogued as municipal waste (20 03 03) by the European Wastes Catalogue) were converted into zeolites by hydrothermal synthesis at 100 °C with previous alkaline fusion at 550 °C with distilled water. During this process, new phases of zeolite principally type X and sodalite have been identified by XRD at 2 h of incubation. These zeolites, with the course of incubation time, present competitive processes where the transformation into sodalite develops after 24 h as the predominant phase. The synthesized zeolitic material presents a high concentration as impurities in Fe2O3 (13.70 wt%), Na2O (12.70 wt%), CaO (11.65 wt%), and TiO2 (3.89 wt%) coming from the volcanic ash and NaOH introduced in the synthesis methodology. These impurities impart different physicochemical capabilities to the zeolitic material. The application of zeolites obtained in a preliminary fluoride adsorption experiment with volcanic leachate water rich in fluoride has been tested in a novel way. Removal efficiencies of 41.4% at acidic pH (5.77) have been obtained with 2 g L-1 adsorbent zeolitic material doses. A value-added material is obtained and applied in a preliminary way to solve a problem generated by the volcanic ash itself, allowing the End of Waste status and meeting different objectives of the sustainable development goals of the UN Agenda 2030.

Synthesis of Porous Materials Using Magnesium Slag and Their Adsorption Performance for Lead Ions in Aqueous Solution

Magnesium slag-based porous materials (MSBPM) were successfully synthesized using alkali activation and foaming methods as an effective adsorbent for Pb2+ in solution. The effects of foaming agent type, foaming agent dosage, alkali dosage, and water glass modulus on the properties of the MSBPM were studied, and the micromorphology and porosity of the MSBPM were observed using microscopy. The influence of pH value, initial concentration, and adsorbent dosage on the Pb2+ adsorption was investigated. The results showed that a porous material (MSBPM-H2O2) with high compressive strength (8.46 MPa) and excellent Pb2+ adsorption capacity (396.11 mg·g-1) was obtained under the optimal conditions: a H2O2 dosage of 3%, an alkali dosage of 9%, a water glass modulus of 1.3, and a liquid-solid ratio of 0.5. Another porous material (MSBPM-Al) with a compressive strength of 5.27 MPa and the Pb2+ adsorption capacity of 424.89 mg·g-1 was obtained under the optimal conditions: an aluminum powder dosage of 1.5‱, an alkali dosage of 8%, a water glass modulus of 1.0, and a liquid-solid ratio of 0.5. When the pH of the aqueous solution is 6 and the initial Pb2+ concentrations are 200~500 mg·L-1, the MSBPM-H2O2 and MSBPM-Al can remove more than 99% of Pb2+ in the solution. The adsorption process of both materials followed the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the adsorption process was a single-molecule layer chemical adsorption.

Preparation and characterization of ZSM-5 molecular sieve using coal gangue as a raw material via solvent-free method: Adsorption performance tests for heavy metal ions and methylene blue

Coal gangue is a kind of solid waste produced in the process of coal mining and washing. Its silicon aluminum silicon aluminum oxide content is high, respectively, which are suitable for resource utilization as raw materials for Si-Al molecular sieving. In this paper, a novel, simple, low-cost, and environmentally friendly process was carried out to prepare ZSM-5 zeolite by solvent free method after calcination, acid leaching, and alkali melting. The obtained samples were characterized by Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS), Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP), Thermo-gravimetry Analysis (TG), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR) X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and N2 adsorption isotherm. The characteristics of the raw materials and the adsorption mechanism of the prepared samples were characterized. Through a series of pretreatment such as calcined acid leaching and alkali melting of the raw materials, the silicon-aluminum ratio of the sample reaches 1.749, and the maximum specific surface area of the sample can reach 252.59 m2/g. The obtained samples were used to adsorb heavy metal ions and methylene blue solution, and the removal rate of lead ions and methylene blue solution was more than 95%. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of Pb ion, methylene blue solution and copper ion can reach 232.56 mg/g and 118.34 mg/g. The adsorption process is mainly chemical adsorption. The product could be suitable for removing both heavy metal ions and cationic dyes from the wastewater and had broad application prospects.

High-Performance Novel MoS2@Zeolite X Nanocomposite-Modified Thin-Film Nanocomposite Forward Osmosis Membranes: A Study of Desalination and Antifouling Performance

Novel thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes modified by the MoS2@Zeolite X nanocomposite were made and studied for desalination by the forward osmosis (FO) method. Herein, MoS2@Zeolite X nanocomposite (MoS2@Z) and zeolite X particles are integrated into the polyamide (PA) selective layer of the TFN membranes, separately. The aim of this study is the synthesis of nanocomposites containing hydrophilic zeolite X particles with a modified surface and pore and improvement of their effective properties on desalination and antifouling performance. For this purpose, MoS2 nanosheets with a high hydrophilicity were selected. The existence of polymer-matrix-compatible MoS2@Z inside the PA active layer caused the formation of a defect-free smooth surface with further channels within this layer that could increase the water flux and fouling resistance of the TFN membranes. The TFN-MZ2 membrane (containing 0.01 wt % MoS2@Z) showed the top desalination performance in the FO process. In contrast to the pristine thin-film composite (TFC) and TFN-Z2 membrane (containing 0.025 wt % zeolite X, the most optimal membrane among the zeolite-modified membranes), its water flux has increased by 2.6 and 1.8 times, respectively. Furthermore, in the fouling test, this optimal TFN-MZ2 membrane with a flux decrement of 19.6% revealed an ∼2.2- and 1.8-fold enhancement in antifouling tendency compared to the TFC and TFN-Z2, respectively. Also, based on the antibiofouling test, the water flux drop of 48.6% for the TFC membrane has reached 36.9% for the optimal membrane. Hence, this high-performance TFN-MZ2 membrane shows good capability for commercial employment in FO desalination application.

Effects of a Cellulose Aerogel Template on the Preparation and Adsorption Properties of Coal Gangue-Based Multistage Porous ZSM-5

In this study, a ZSM-5/CLCA molecular sieve was prepared by the hydrothermal method using coal gangue as the raw material and cellulose aerogel (CLCA) as the green templating agent, which not only reduces the cost of traditional molecular preparation but also improves the comprehensive resource utilization rate of coal gangue. Through a series of characterization methods (XRD, SEM, FT-IR, TEM, TG, and BET), the crystal form, morphology, and specific surface area of the prepared sample were tested and analyzed. The performance of the adsorption process of malachite green (MG) solution was analyzed by adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm. The results show that the synthesized zeolite molecular sieve and the commercial zeolite molecular sieve are highly consistent. At a crystallization time of 16 h, a crystallization temperature of 180 °C, and an additive amount of cellulose aerogel of 0.6 g, the adsorption capacity of ZSM-5/CLCA for MG was up to 136.5 mg/g, much higher than that of commercially available ZSM-5. This provides an idea for the green preparation of gangue-based zeolite molecular sieves to remove organic pollutants from water. Moreover, the process of adsorbing MG on the multistage porous molecular sieve, which is spontaneous, conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation and Langmuir isothermal adsorption model.

Removal and kinetics of cadmium and copper ion adsorption in aqueous solution by zeolite NaX synthesized from coal gangue

Zeolite can remove the heavy metals in wastewater, but the removal efficiency was determined by the types of zeolites and the treatment conditions. In this study, a kind of zeolite NaX synthesized from the coal gangue, a by-product of coal production, was used and the removal efficiency of Cd²⁺ and Cu²⁺and the kinetic models were studied. The effects of its dosage, initial pH value of wastewater, and adsorption temperature on its adsorption of heavy metals Cd²⁺ and Cu²⁺ in the simulated wastewater were studied through the indoor experiments in laboratory, and the adsorption mechanism was analyzed by the adsorption kinetic model based on its adsorption efficiency and its structures. The results show that the zeolite NaX synthesized from coal gangue has a good adsorption effect on Cd²⁺ and Cu²⁺. The adsorption reaches the best effect when the dosage of zeolite is 2 g/L, the initial pH of simulated wastewater is 5, the adsorption temperature is room temperature (25 ℃), and the removal efficiency of Cd²⁺ and Cu²⁺ (100 mg/L) is more than 90%. Additionally, the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isothermal adsorption models were used to compare and analyze the adsorption effects. The equilibrium data was better fitted by the Langmuir model with the maximum adsorption capacities of 100.11 mg/g (Cd²⁺) and 95.29 mg/g (Cu²⁺), and both separation coefficients were 0-1, which shows that the process was the favorable adsorption. Weber Morris diffusion model shows that the adsorption process at 120 min was more consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetics model, and the adsorption efficiency was simultaneously controlled by the liquid diffusion step and intraparticle diffusion step. Moreover, the removal mechanism of Cd²⁺ and Cu²⁺ mainly includes physical adsorption and ion exchange. Therefore, the adsorption effect of zeolite synthesized from coal gangue is remarkable, which will provide a feasible and potential alternative for its resource application.

Cost-effective microwave-assisted hydrothermal rapid synthesis of analcime-activated carbon composite from coal gangue used for Pb2+ adsorption

Heavy metal contamination of water has brought about serious harm to the ecological environment and also threatens human health to a certain extent. In this study, a composite structure comprised of analcime-activated carbon (ANA-AC) was synthesized in situ via a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method using coal gangue (CG) for the potential treatment of Pb²⁺ from aqueous solution. The products were systematically characterized using XRD, SEM, BET, FTIR, and XPS. The results showed that activated carbon was successfully integrated with the structure of the analcime and the BET surface area of the ANA-AC (20.82 m²/g) was much greater than that of the CG (9.33 m²/g) and ANA (10.04 m²/g) independently. The relationship between Pb²⁺ adsorption capacity and the initial solution concentration, adsorbent dosages, contact time, pH, and temperature was studied. Under optimal conditions (Pb²⁺  = 100 mg/L, dosage = 0.1 g, contact time = 6 h, pH = 5.4-6, temperature = 298 K), the maximum adsorption capacity of ANA-AC can reach 100%, which was higher than that of CG and ANA. The Langmuir isotherm model was in good agreement with the data obtained for Pb²⁺ adsorption, and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was more suitable for describing the experimental data, showing that chemical adsorption was the controlling step during the adsorption process. In summary, analcime-activated carbon composite prepared from coal gangue could be used as an appropriate adsorbent for Pb²⁺ adsorption from an aqueous solution.

Management of solid waste after used motor oil recovery via production of zeolite A

The attempt of the current study is to find an eco-friendly method for managing the solid waste deposited in the landfill of used motor oil recovery factories through the fabrication of zeolite-based compounds. This toxic waste is originated from the application of natural bentonite, traditionally used as an effective adsorbent in the recovery process. The black waste was converted to zeolite structures through the fusion technique. Firstly, the collected powder was mixed with sodium hydroxide, and boehmite followed by the thermal treatment at different temperatures, 600-800 °C. Then, the obtained precursors were hydrothermally converted to zeolite A or hydroxysodalite. The effects of processing factors like alkalinity, boehmite, and sodium aluminate ratios (respect to solid waste mass), fusion temperature, and aging time on the structural characteristics, and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were studied in detail. In order to achieve a cation exchange capacity of about 190 mg g^-1, the alkali and boehmite ratios should be adjusted at 2.00 and 0.53, respectively. Based on the morphological observations, the fusion at 800 °C caused the formation of cubic particles with sharp edges. Besides, the hydrosodalite powder with the extended surface area, 77 m² g^-1, could be produced by fixing the boehmite, and sodium aluminate ratios at the levels of 0.13 and 0.40, respectively.

Combing phosphorus-modified hydrochar and zeolite prepared from coal gangue for highly effective immobilization of heavy metals in coal-mining contaminated soil

Considering the adverse effects of heavy metals (HMs) on agriculture soil, in-situ immobilization has been paid great attention worldwide. P-modified biochar/hydrochar along with synthetic zeolite for efficient HMs immobilization in contaminated soil becomes a promising choice. In this study, H₃PO₄-modified hydrochar (BPH) derived from banana peels, and Na-X zeolite (ZL) prepared from coal gangue was applied individually and synergistically (1%BPH, 2%BPH 1%ZL, 2%ZL, and 1%BPH+1%ZL) to remediate a farmland soil polluted by Cd, Cu, and Pb near the coal-mining area. Compared with the mono-application of these two amendments, their combination significantly improved the soil organic carbon (SOC), electric conductivity (EC), and dehydrogenase activity. Besides, the addition of 1%CLH+1%ZL remarkably reduced the Cd, Cu, and Pb bioavailability by 67.01%, 57.01%, and 78.72%, respectively, in the soil after 100 d incubation by transforming these metals to more stable forms. The order of the HMs immobilization capacity for these two amendments was as follows: Pb > Cu > Cd. Moreover, the dominated immobilization mechanism of their synergistic application was that BPH could immobilize HMs by precipitation, complexation, and π-π electron-donor-acceptor interaction. The precipitation and complexation blocked the surface pores of BPH. The sustained release of phosphorus groups and radicals was prevented. This obstacle was possibly alleviated by adding ZL. Besides, the formation of cationic bridging, the enhancement of soil properties, and the physical adsorption of these amendments were also conducive to HMs immobilization in soil. This work indicated that co-application of BPH and ZL possibly was an excellent choice for immobilizing HMs in soil.

Preparation of a Gangue-Based X-type Zeolite Molecular Sieve as a Multiphase Fenton Catalyst and Its Catalytic Performance

In this study, a series of X-type zeolite molecular sieve catalysts, modified with copper (Cu-X), were prepared by an alkali fusion-hydrothermal synthesis using coal gangue from Inner Mongolia. These catalysts were used in the degradation of the methylene blue dye by a Fenton-like reaction. Characterization results showed that Cu is considered to be present in the surface structure of the zeolite in the form of doped Cu ions and metal oxide. It is believed that Cu2+ is the main active site involved in the Fenton reaction. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra indicated that Cu2+ and Cu+ coexist in the catalysts and participate together in the Fenton reaction. The degradation of methylene blue by the Cu-X catalysts was investigated to determine the optimal catalytic conditions in terms of six aspects: catalyst dosage, initial solution concentration, initial pH of the solution, H2O2 dosage, copper loading, and reaction temperature. The experimental results showed that CX-1.0 had excellent activity and stability for the degradation and decolorization of the methylene blue dye, which could completely degrade the dye within 90 min, and the total organic carbon removal rate reached as high as 97.8%. Electron spin resonance (ESR) and radical capture experiments showed that •OH played a dominant role in the Fenton-like reaction. Combined with XPS, ESR, and catalytic tests, the redox cycle of Cu+/Cu2+ was found to be accelerating the generation of reactive radicals in the Fenton system.
