Potamogeton crispus responses to varying water depth in morphological plasticity and physiological traits

Combining effects of submerged macrophytes and lanthanum-modified bentonite on sediment enzyme activity: Evidence from mesocosm study

Lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB) combined with submerged macrophytes (SM) has been a conventional means of eutrophication management in lakes in recent years, and is one of the most important methods for P removal. However, trends in nutrients and sediment enzymes at the water-sediment interface during this process have not been systematically assessed, and there are still some gaps in how abiotic properties drive changes in enzyme activity. Here, we show changes in aquatic environmental conditions under the action of different ratios of modified bentonite (0, 10%, 20%, and 30%) in combination with SM (Vallisneria natans, Potamogeton lucens, and Hydrilla verticillate) and quantify their effects on sediment enzyme activities. The results showed that the nutrient cycling at the water-sediment interface was facilitated by the combined effect of SM and LMB, which effectively reduced the overlying water nutrient concentration, increased the sediment enzyme activity and enhanced the N cycling process. Partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM) showed that sediment parameters strongly influenced changes in enzyme activity, with NO3-N as the main controlling factors. Our study fills in the process of changing environmental conditions in lake water under geoengineered materials combined with macrophyte measures, especially the changes in biological properties enzyme activities, which contributes to a clearer understanding of nutrient fluxes during the management of eutrophication in lakes.

Species-specific functional trait responses of canopy-forming and rosette-forming macrophytes to nitrogen loading: Implications for water-sediment interactions

Globally intensified lake eutrophication, attributed to excessive anthropogenic nitrogen loading, emerges as a significant driver of submerged vegetation degradation. Consequently, the impact of nitrogen on the decline of submerged macrophytes has received increasing attention. However, a functional trait-based approach to exploring the response of submerged macrophytes to nitrogen loading and its environmental feedback mechanism was unclear. Our study utilized two different growth forms of submerged macrophytes (canopy-forming Myriophyllum spicatum, and rosette-forming Vallisneria natans) to established "submerged macrophytes-water-sediment" microcosms. We assessed the influence of nitrogen loading, across four targeted total nitrogen concentrations (original control, 2, 5, 10 mg/L), on plant traits, water parameters, sediment properties, enzyme activities, and microbial characteristics. Our findings revealed that high nitrogen (10 mg/L) adversely impacted the relative growth rate of fresh biomass and total chlorophyll content in canopy-forming M. spicatum, while the chlorophyll a/b and free amino acid content increased. On the contrary, the growth and photosynthetic traits of resource-conservative V. natans were not affected by nitrogen loading. Functional traits (growth, photosynthetic, and stoichiometric) of M. spicatum but not V. natans exhibited significant correlations with environmental variables. Nitrogen loading significantly increased the concentration of nitrogen components in overlying water and pore water. The presence of submerged macrophytes significantly reduced the ammonia nitrogen and total nitrogen both in overlying water and pore water, and decreased total organic carbon in pore water. Nitrogen loading significantly inhibited sediment extracellular enzyme activities, but the planting of submerged macrophytes mitigated their negative effects. Furthermore, rhizosphere bacterial interactions were less compact compared to bare control, while eukaryotic communities exhibited increased complexity and connectivity. Path modeling indicated that submerged macrophytes mitigated the direct effects of nitrogen loading on overlying water and amplified the indirect effects on pore water, while also attenuating the direct negative effects of pore water on extracellular enzymes. The findings indicated that the restoration of submerged vegetation can mitigate eutrophication resulting from increased nitrogen loading through species-specific changes in functional traits and direct or indirect feedback mechanisms in the water-sediment system.

Response of a submerged macrophyte (Vallisneria natans) to water depth gradients and sediment nutrient concentrations

Submerged plants constitute a vital component of shallow lake ecosystems, where water depth and sediment nitrogen‑phosphorus content are two key factors influencing their growth. This study focuses on Vallisneria natans and investigates the morphological and physiological changes of V. natans under the interaction of three water depth gradients and two different sediment nutrient levels. It explores the mechanisms through which varying sediment nutrient conditions under different water depths affect the growth of V. natans. The results indicate that both independent and interactive effects of water depth and sediment nutrient status significantly impact the morphology, antioxidant enzyme activity, and photosynthetic pigment content of V. natans, with water depth having a greater influence. To adapt to increased water depth-induced light stress, V. natans responds morphologically by increasing leaf length, leaf width, and decreasing maximum root length. Physiologically, it enhances its antioxidant regulation capacity and photosynthetic efficiency by increasing antioxidant enzyme activity, root vitality, and photosynthetic pigment content to counter weak light stress. However, these adaptations are insufficient to cope with excessively deep waters (200 cm). Sediment nutrient levels primarily control the growth of V. natans by affecting its root system. When sediment nitrogen and phosphorus content is lower, V. natans exhibits greater total root volume and surface area to enhance nutrient absorption efficiency. Water depth not only directly influences the growth of submerged plants but may also impact the migration and transformation of phosphorus in sediments, further exacerbating its effects on the growth of these plants, thus accelerating the regime shift of shallow lakes. Therefore, this study reveals V. natans' response strategies to varying water depths and sediment nutrient levels, determining suitable water levels and sediment nutrient conditions for its growth. These research findings provide a scientific basis for water level management and ecological restoration of submerged aquatic plants in shallow lakes.

Potamogeton crispus restoration increased the epiphytic microbial diversity and improved water quality in a micro-polluted urban river

Special characterization and assembly of epiphytic microbial communities remain unclear in micro-polluted water column during submersed macrophytes restoration. In this study, an in-situ enclosure area sowing with turions of Potamogeton crispus (P. crispus) was conducted in a micro-polluted urban river to investigate the characterization of P. crispus and epiphytic microbial communities and their response to water environment under different water depths. Turions completely germinated in water column with <90 cm water depth and the germination speed decreased with increasing water depth within 18 days. There were obvious differences in morphological characteristics of P. crispus between deep and shallow water layers. P. crispus restoration decreased by 12-32%, 13-36%, 9-43% and 5-36% of COD, NH₄⁺-N, TN and TP concentration, respectively, in enclosed overlying water compared to the river (P < 0.05) during 5 months of experiment. Illumina sequencing was employed to explore the epiphytic bacterial and microeukayotic communities at water depth 25-35 cm (shallow area) and 80-90 cm (deep area). A total of 9 bacterial and 12 microeukayotic dominant phyla were obtained in eight samples. It should be noted that the algae abundances were higher in shallow area than deep area but a reverse trend was observed for methanotrophs. Null model analysis revealed that dispersal limitation and undominated process was the most important assembly process, whereas stochastic processes gained more importance in shallow area than deep one. According to cooccurrence analysis (|r| > 0.6, P < 0.05), there were more strongly correlated edges in shallow area (456 edges) than deep area (340 edges). These results highlight that submerged macrophytes restoration can increase microbial diversity and improve water quality, and provide a "summer disease cured in winter" way by using could-resistant P. crispus for water purification in micro-polluted rivers in low-temperature season.

Vertical patterns of leaf physiology and biofilm characteristics for Hydrilla verticillata in both single and mixed communities

Little is known about how community composition affects vertical patterns of leaf characteristics for submerged macrophytes in freshwater lakes. Here, after sampling Hydrilla verticillata in both single and mixed communities in shallow and deep areas in a shallow lake, we measured vertical patterns of leaf biofilm and physiology characteristics. Upper leaves of H. verticillata always had more attached abiotic biofilm matters, and all biofilm characteristics exhibited declining trends from top to bottom segments in deep areas. Moreover, the amount of attached biofilm matter in the mixed community was less than in the single community in shallow areas, but the reverse was true in deep areas. The vertical pattern of leaf physiology characteristics was obvious in the mixed community. In the shallow area, leaf pigment concentrations showed increasing trends with an increasing water depth, but the enzymatic specific activity of peroxidase (POD-ESA) was precisely the opposite. In the deep area, leaf chlorophyll concentrations were greatest in the leaves of bottom segments and lowest in top segments, while carotenoids and POD-ESA were greatest in the leaves of the middle segment-II. Light intensity and biofilm were found to play an important role in regulating the vertical patterns of photosynthetic pigments and POD-ESA. Our study highlighted the effect of community composition on the vertical pattern of leaf physiology and biofilm characteristics. HIGHLIGHTS: Biofilm characteristics always showed increasing trends with increasing water depth. Community composition changed the amount of attached biofilm matter. The vertical pattern of leaf physiology was more obvious in mixed communities. Light intensity and biofilm regulated the vertical pattern of leaf physiology.

Growth response to nitrate enrichment helps facilitate success of an alien Potamogeton in New Zealand streams

Motivated by stream ecosystem degradation by eutrophication, we mimicked slow flowing lowland stream conditions with a novel experimental setup to further our understanding of aquatic plant responses to increases in nitrate and light. We conducted a mesocosm growth experiment of two species from the genus Potamogeton: P. crispus (alien) and P. ochreatus (native), grown at four nitrate and four light levels. We hypothesised that (i) internal nutrient status of the plants would scale with water column nutrient concentration, and that (ii) plant performance would reflect the nutrient status of the plant. Furthermore, we hypothesised that (iii) a low irradiance level would negate the effects of an increased nitrate level. In relation to (ii) we hypothesised that (iv) the traits of the alien species would enable it to outperform the native species where both the availability of light and nutrient resources was high. Internal tissue N content was broadly similar in the two higher (>250 μg NO₃ ^- L^-1) and the two lower nutrient treatments (<20 μg NO₃ ^- L^-1) in both species and plants were therefore collapsed into high and low N-groups. High-N individuals had higher growth rates than low-N ones regardless of species or light treatment and plants had reduced growth rates at the lowest light treatment, however this response was less evident for P. crispus. The highest growth rate was found at the high-N individuals of P. crispus at the highest light treatment, and correspondingly, in this treatment this species exhibited an increase in branching degree and lateral spread from the low-N plants. As P. crispus spreads by fragmentation, our results show it to be a highly effective competitor in anthropogenically impacted areas compared to its native counterpart. Our study exemplifies how light can influence eutrophication responses of plants and how both need to be accounted for in management decisions.

Characteristics of plant trait network and its influencing factors in impounded lakes and channel rivers of South-to-North Water Transfer Project, China

Trait-based approaches have been widely used to evaluate the effects of variable environments on submerged macrophytes communities. However, little research focused on the response of submerged macrophytes to variable environmental factors in impounded lakes and channel rivers of water transfer project, especially from a whole plant trait network (PTN) perspective. Here, we conducted a field survey designed to clarify the characteristic of PTN topology among impounded lakes and channel rivers of the East Route of South-to-North Water Transfer Project (ERSNWTP) and to unravel the effects of determining factors on the PTN topology structure. Overall, our results showed that leaf-related traits and organ mass allocation traits were the hub traits of PTNs in impounded lakes and channel rivers of the ERSNWTP, which traits with high variability were more likely to be the hub traits. Moreover, PTNs showed different structures among impounded lakes and channel rivers, and PTNs topologies were related to the mean functional variation coefficients of lakes and channel rivers. Specially, higher mean functional variation coefficients represented tight PTN, and lower mean functional variation coefficients indicated loose PTN. The PTN structure was significantly affected by water total phosphorus and dissolved oxygen. Edge density increased, while average path length decreased with increasing total phosphorus. Edge density and average clustering coefficient showed significant decreases with increasing dissolved oxygen, while average path length and modularity exhibited significant increases with increasing dissolved oxygen. This study explores the changing patterns and determinants of trait networks along environmental gradients to improve our understanding of ecological rules regulating trait correlations.

How does turions production of Potamogeton crispus L. respond to parental population biomass and living environment

Turions production is the dominant means of propagation in Potamogeton crispus L. To understand how parental population and their living environmental factors influence the turions production of P. crispus L., a field research was conducted in Nansi Lake in Yellow River Flood Plain and southwestern Shandong Province, China. This study showed that P. crispus biomass and asexual turions showed an almost uniform spatial distribution pattern. Water depth, attenuation coefficient of light, sediment water content, sediment organic matter content, and pH were significantly related to P. crispus biomass, turions weight, and turions number. Single turion weight was determined only by P. crispus biomass, while turions number was simultaneously determined by P. crispus biomass and sediment water content. Turions weight mainly depended on turions number rather than single turion weight, and maternal biomass and sediment water content determined turions weight by affected turions number rather than single turion weight.

Rapid adaptive responses of rosette-type macrophyte Vallisneria natans juveniles to varying water depths: The role of leaf trait plasticity

Rosette-type submerged macrophytes are widely distributed across a range of water depths in shallow lakes and play a key role in maintaining ecosystem structures and functions. However, little is known about the rapid adaptive responses of such macrophytes to variations in water depth, especially at the juvenile stage. Here, we conducted a short-term in situ mesocosm experiment, in which the juveniles of Vallisneria natans were exposed to a water depth gradient ranging from 20 to 360 cm. Twenty-two leaf-related traits were examined after 4 weeks of growth in a shallow lake. Most (18) traits of V. natans generally showed high plasticity in relation to water depth. Specifically, juveniles allocated more biomass to leaves and had higher specific leaf area, leaf length-to-width ratio, chlorophyll content, and carotenoids content in deep waters, displaying trait syndrome associated with high resource acquisition. In contrast, V. natans juveniles in shallow waters had higher leaf dry matter content, leaf soluble carbohydrate content, carotenoids per unit chlorophyll, and peroxidase activity, pertaining to resource conservation. Notably, underwater light intensity was found to be the key factor explaining the trait plasticity along the water depth gradient, and 1.30 mol photons m-2 d-1 (at 270 cm) could be the optimal irradiance level based on the total biomass of V. natans juveniles. The present study highlights the significance of leaf trait plasticity for rosette-type macrophytes in response to variations in water depth and sheds new light on the differences between trade-offs in deep- and shallow-water areas.
