Bioretention for removal of nitrogen: processes, operational conditions, and strategies for improvement

Total nitrogen and phosphorus loads in surface runoff from urban land use (city of Lublin) under climate change

An expansion of impervious surfaces in urban areas leads to increases of nutrient loads discharged with the surface runoff to receivers. A study of a different density of urban development impact on total nitrogen (TN) and phosphorus (TP) loads from the city of Lublin (eastern Poland) with the use of the SWAT (Soil & Water Assessment Tool) model was performed. To distinguish between areas with high and low density of urban development (UHD and ULD), a special analysis of hydrological parameters has been proposed. Moreover, to investigate the impact of climate change, four variant scenarios were taken into account, combining the RCP (representative concentration pathway) 4.5 and 8.5 forecasts and the adopted time horizons (2026-2035 and 2046-2055). The results showed a much higher share of TN and TP from UHD compared to ULD (86%-32 022 kg/year and 89%-2574 kg/year, respectively). In addition, the variant scenarios showed that the forecasted increase in precipitation and temperature will result in increased loads of nutrients from UHD and ULD up to 30%. Furthermore, the current increase of inhabitant number, due to the Ukrainian war migration and the common tendency to convert agricultural land to residential areas, could contribute to further expansion of UHD and ULD areas and an additional increase of nutrient loads.

Soil properties and functional genes in nitrogen removal process of bioretention

The effects of different soil properties on hydrology and nitrogen removal were studied in a simulated bioretention system. Soil capacity of permeability and water retention, changes in the soil environment, leachate concentrations at the surface and bottom layers, quantification of N removal from soil, microorganism and plant by 15N isotope tracer technique, and functional genes abundance at different depths were evaluated. The results showed that shallow root plants, soil compaction, and low organic matter content were not conducive to the infiltration of bioretention systems. In the 72 h experiment, compaction (especially surface compaction) and planting of herbaceous plants (Ophiopogon japonicus) were not beneficial to the removal of TN, TP, and COD. Adding an appropriate amount of organic matter also affects nitrogen and phosphorus removal. In the process of denitrification, the order of the ability to remove nitrogen is soil adsorption > microbial assimilation > plant uptake. The contribution of soil denitrification is affected by soil compaction, compaction location, plant species and organic matter content. The abundance of 16S rRNA, nitrifying, denitrifying and nrfA genes decreased with soil depth. More copies of genes in topsoil were thought to be due to sufficient nutrients, aerobic condition, anaerobic microsites and submerged state. Soil compaction, organic matter content and plant species affected nitrification, denitrification and DNRA gene characteristics.

Pollutant removal in an experimental bioretention cell situated in a northern Chinese sponge city

To assess the viability and effectiveness of bioretention cell in enhancing rainwater resource utilization within sponge cities, this study employs field monitoring, laboratory testing, and statistical analysis to evaluate the water purification capabilities of bioretention cell. Findings indicate a marked purification impact on surface runoff, with removal efficiencies of 59.81% for suspended solids (SS), 39.01% for chemical oxygen demand (COD), 37.53% for ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), and 30.49% for total phosphorus (TP). The treated water largely complies with rainwater reuse guidelines and tertiary sewage discharge standards. Notably, while previous research in China has emphasized water volume control in sponge city infrastructures, less attention has been given to the qualitative aspects and field-based evaluations. This research not only fills that gap but also offers valuable insights and practical implications for bioretention cell integration into sponge city development. Moreover, the methodology and outcomes of this study serve as a benchmark for future sponge city project assessments, offering guidance to relevant authorities.

Removal effect of pollutants from stormwater runoff in shallow bioretention system with gramineous plants

The bioretention system is one of the most widely used low impact development (LID) facilities with efficient purification capacity for stormwater, and its planting design has been a hot spot for research at home and abroad. In this paper, ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), bermuda (Cynodon dactylon Linn.), bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge), and green grass (Cynodon dactylon × C .transadlensis 'Tifdwarf') were chosen as plant species to construct a shallow bioretention system. The growth traits and nutrient absorption ability of four gramineous plants were analyzed. Their tolerance, enrichment, and transportation capacity were also evaluated to compare plant species and their absorptive capacity of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, and Zn). Results showed that the maximum absorption rate (Imax) ranged from 22.1 to 42.4 μg/(g·h) for P and ranged from 65.4 to 104.8 μg/(g·h) for NH4+-N; ryegrass had the strongest absorption capacity for heavy metals and the maximum removal rates of Cu, Pb, and Zn by four grasses were 78.4, 59.4, and 51.3%, respectively; the bioretention cell with ryegrass (3#) was significantly more effective in purifying than the unplanted bioretention cell (1#) during the simulated rainfall test. Overall, the system parameters were optimized to improve the technical application of gramineous plants in the bioretention system.

Insights into the transport and bio-degradation of dissolved inorganic nitrogen in the biochar-pyrite amended stormwater biofilter using dynamic modeling

The stormwater biofilter is a prevailing green infrastructure for urban stormwater management, but it is less effective in dissolved nitrogen removal, especially for nitrate. The mechanism that governs the nitrate leaching and performance stability of stormwater biofilters is poorly understood. In this study, a water quality model was developed to predict the ammonium and nitrate dynamics in a biochar-pyrite amended stormwater biofilter. The transport of dissolved nitrogen species was described by advection-dispersion models. The kinetics of adsorption and pyrite-based autotrophic denitrification are included in the model and simulated with a steady-state saturated flow. The model was calibrated and validated using eleven storm events. The modeling results reveal that the contribution of pyrite-based autotrophic denitrification to nitrate leaching alleviation improves with the increased drying duration. The nitrate removal efficiency was affected by a series of design parameters. Pyrite filling rate has a minor effect on nitrate removal promotion. Service area ratio and submerged zone depth are the key parameters to prevent nitrate leaching, as they influence the emergence and discharge time of nitrate breakthrough. The high inflow volume (high service area ratio) and small submerged zone can lead to earlier and increased discharge of peak nitrate otherwise the peak nitrate could be retained in the submerged zone and denitrified during the drying period. The developed mechanistic model provides a useful tool to evaluate the treatment ability of stormwater biofilters under varying conditions and offers a guideline for biofilter design optimization.

Removal effect of typical pollutants from stormwater runoff in ecological ditches

Ecological ditches are a typical ecological facility for controlling road stormwater runoff pollution; they mainly remove harmful pollutants from runoff through plant absorption, retention and sedimentation, ecological adsorption, and microbial action. In this paper, according to the transport form of rainwater in the ditches, the removal effects of two different types of ditches on nitrogen, phosphorus, heavy metals, and other pollutants were simulated under three conditions of rainfall, slow flow, and still water, respectively, and their operating characteristics were analyzed. The results showed that the removal rate of TN in the two ecological ditches under slow flow conditions showed a downward trend as a whole with the increase of hydraulic load, and the suitable hydraulic load for TN removal should be selected as 0.3 m3/(m2 day). Under the simulated rainfall conditions, the TN removal rates of no. 1 and no. 2 ditches were 26.1-37.2% and 24.9 ~ 52.5%, respectively, and the TP removal rates were 44.6 ~ 63.3% and 36.1 ~ 62.1%. After 19.4 h and 22.1 h in the static state, the TP concentration in no. 1 ditch and no. 2 ditch reached the surface V water standard, and the average removal rate of TP was 74.7% and 53.7%, respectively. This paper provides a reference for selecting suitable parameters and optimizing the operational performance of ecological ditches to reduce runoff pollutants more effectively.

Bibliometric analysis of global research on bioretention from 2007 to 2021

Bioretention is a typical low impact development (LID) practice that helps reduce peak urban stormwater runoff and runoff pollutant concentrations (e.g., heavy metals, suspended solids, organic pollutants), which has become an important part of urban stormwater management over the past 15 years. To understand the research hotspots and frontiers in the field of bioretention facility research and provide a reference for research into bioretention facilities, we conduct a statistical analysis of global bioretention literature published during 2007-2021 using the Web of Science core database and the data visualization and analysis software VOSviewer and HistCite. The number of published articles related to bioretention facilities shows a rising trend over the study period, with research from China contributing greatly to global research on bioretention facilities. However, the influence of articles needs to be increased. Recent studies mainly focus on the hydrologic effect and water purification effect of bioretention facilities and on the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients from runoff rainwater. Further studies should focus on the interaction of fillers, microorganisms, and plants in bioretention facilities and its impact on the migration, transformation, and concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus; the purification effect and mechanism of specific emerging contaminants in runoff; the selection and configuration optimization of filler materials and plant species; and the optimization of the design parameters of the model for bioretention systems.

Application of biochar as an innovative soil ameliorant in bioretention system for stormwater treatment: A review of performance and its influencing factors

As an emerging environment functional material, biochar has become a research hotspot in environmental fields because of its excellent ecological and environmental benefits. Recently, biochar has been used as an innovative soil ameliorant in bioretention systems (BRS) to effectively enhance pollutant removal efficiency for BRS. This paper summarizes and evaluates the performance and involved mechanisms of biochar amendment in BRS with respect to the removal of nutrients (TN (34-47.55%) and PO₄^3--P (47-99.8%)), heavy metals (25-100%), pathogenic microorganisms (Escherichia coli (30-98%)), and organic contaminants (77.2-100%). For biochar adsorption, the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models are the most suitable kinetic and isothermal adsorption models, respectively. Furthermore, we analyzed and elucidated some factors that influence the pollutant removal performance of biochar-amended BRS, such as the types of biochar, the preparation process and physicochemical properties of biochar, the aging of biochar, the chemical modification of biochar, and the hydraulic loading, inflow concentration and drying-rewetting alternation of biochar-amended BRS. The high potential for recycling spent biochar in BRS as a soil ameliorant is proposed. Collectively, biochar can be used as an improved medium in BRS. This review provides a foundation for biochar selection in biochar-amended BRS. Future research and practical applications of biochar-amended BRS should focus on the long-term stability of treatment performances under field conditions, chemical modification with co-impregnated nanomaterials in biochar surface, and the durability, aging, and possible negative effects of biochar.

Nitrogen process in stormwater bioretention: effect of the antecedent dry days on the relative abundance of nitrogen functional genes

In this study, we evaluated the relative abundance of nitrogen functional genes (amoA, nirK and nirS) involved in ammonia oxidation and denitrification bacteria in laboratory-scale bioretention columns in response to environmental factors (e.g., moisture content, pH, soil organic matter, soil nitrogen) under different antecedent dry days (ADDs). We observed a decrease tendency of the relative abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria at first and then increased when increasing ADDs from 1 to 22 day, while the relative abundance of denitrifying bacteria showed a downward trend. The abundance of bacteria gene amoA was positively associated with soil ammonia nitrogen concentration (r² = 0.389, p < 0.05) and soil organic matter concentration (r² = 0.334, p < 0.05), while the abundance of bacteria gene nirS was positively correlated with soil ammonia nitrogen (r² = 0.730, p < 0.01), soil organic matter (r² = 0.901, p < 0.01) and soil total nitrogen (r² = 0.779, p < 0.01). Furthermore, gene counts for bacteria gene nirS were correlated negatively with plant root length (r² = 0.364, p < 0.05) and plant biomass (r² = 0.381, p < 0.05). Taken together, these results suggest that both nitrification and denitrification can occur in bioretention systems, which can be affected by environmental factors.

Scientific Evidence behind the Ecosystem Services Provided by Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems

Urban green infrastructure such as sustainable urban drainage systems are potential providers of ecosystem services. This paper reviews the field studies that empirically verify the potential benefits of SUDS. The cultural, provisioning, supporting, and regulating ecosystem services investigated in real cases have been studied and classified according to climatology (except for the control of urban hydrology, which has been widely corroborated). Although successful cases of runoff decontamination are numerous, there is heterogeneity in the results of the systems beyond those associated with climatic differences. The other ecosystem services have not been as widely studied, giving very variable and even negative results in some cases such as climate change control (in some instances, these techniques can emit greenhouse gases). Installations in temperate climates are, by far, the most studied. These services derive from the biological processes developed in green infrastructure and they depend on climate, so it would be advisable to carry out specific studies that could serve as the basis for a design that optimizes potential ecosystem services, avoiding possible disservices.

Phase II MS4 challenges: moving toward effective stormwater management for small municipalities

Federal regulations for municipal separate storm sewer systems (MS4s) in the United States have been in place since 1990 as part of the Nation Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), aiming to reduce sediment and pollutant loads originating from urban areas. However, small-municipality (Phase II) MS4s frequently grapple with several challenges, resulting in a lack of stakeholder buy-in and actionable stormwater management plans. We identify five common challenges concerning MS4 requirements based on literature review, professional experience, and feedback solicited from stakeholders, municipal managers, and fellow professionals and offer real-world examples of efficient, effective MS4 frameworks and/or solutions. The five challenges are summarized as beliefs that: (1) agricultural land use is the largest pollutant contributor and the root cause of pollution problems; (2) stormwater management only benefits downstream communities; (3) large, expensive projects are required to comply with regulations; (4) maintenance, monitoring, and inspection of best management practices (BMPs) is overwhelmingly complex and expensive; and (5) a lack of direct funding makes complying with regulations an impossible task. These challenges are universal in nature for Phase II MS4 permittees and can create real barriers for effective stormwater management. However, we found many examples of methods or techniques to effectively address these five specific challenges, making them well-suited and important for discussion. BMPs can create tangible improvements for surrounding communities (e.g., reduced streambank erosion and flooding), and improved understanding of the structure and options within the MS4 program will help small municipalities make informed choices about management plans.

Pilot and Field Studies of Modular Bioretention Tree System with Talipariti tiliaceum and Engineered Soil Filter Media in the Tropics

Stormwater runoff management is challenging in a highly urbanised tropical environment due to the unique space constraints and tropical climate conditions. A modular bioretention tree (MBT) with a small footprint and a reduced on-site installation time was explored for application in a tropical environment. Tree species used in the pilot studies were Talipariti tiliaceum (TT1) and Sterculia macrophylla (TT2). Both of the MBTs could effectively remove total suspended solids (TSS), total phosphorus (TP), zinc, copper, cadmium, and lead with removal efficiencies of greater than 90%. Total nitrogen (TN) removal was noted to be significantly higher in the wet period compared to the dry period (p < 0.05). Variation in TN removal between TT1 and TT2 were attributed to the nitrogen uptake and the root formation of the trees species. A field study MBT using Talipariti tiliaceum had a very clean effluent quality, with average TSS, TP, and TN effluent EMC of 4.8 mg/L, 0.04 mg/L, and 0.27 mg/L, respectively. Key environmental factors were also investigated to study their impact on the performance of BMT. It was found that the initial pollutant concentration, the dissolved fraction of influent pollutants, and soil moisture affect the performance of the MBT. Based on the results from this study, the MBT demonstrates good capability in the improvement of stormwater runoff quality.
